“Speaking of magic,” Astarion begins and you can sense what’s coming. “I heard you prepared quite the polymorphic spectacle today.”

You roll your eyes.

“I’m so sad I missed it,” he teases.

“Sure I can turn you into a sheep–” a yawn cuts your sentence, “–tomorrow.”

It was not the first Wild Magic catastrophe on your journeys and likely would not be the last either. Only this time the whole party of four – Lae’zel, Shadowheart, Gale and yourself – were within the danger zone.

“I’d say the first watch after a day of exploring is a fitting punishment,” Astarion muses.

“Hells, I’m so tired already,” you grumble, rubbing your eyes. The campfire flames are so bright they almost hurt to look at.

“Sorry, darling. I can’t stay, I have my own needs to attend to,” Astarion says and spins on his heels, ready to leave you alone to tend to the camp.

“If I let you drink from me, will you take the watch?” you slip.

Astarion stops in the middle of his spin. He turns back to meet your serious look, unable to believe his pointy ears. “What an interesting offer.”

“Isn’t that what you’ve wanted to do ever since I stumbled upon your secret?” you ask, feeling nervous and already regretting your boldness.

Astarion can’t exactly deny your words, but he still takes his wins wherever he can.

“What would dear Wyll say if he knew you were even suggesting such debauchery, hmm?” Astarion teases you, but you can see his eyes flash with anticipation and the sudden tension in his posture.

Oh, how he has been waiting to hear those words from your lips.

He could have bitten anyone since he realised that Cazador’s old orders, which prohibited him from drinking blood without his Master’s explicit permission, no longer bound him. But the wait made this moment just so much sweeter.

You scoot over to leave room on the fallen tree trunk for Astarion to sit down. “Wyll doesn’t really have a say in this, does he?” you reply.

“Of course, dear. What happens in camp, stays in camp.”

I just realized something. I feel like Counter-Measures was kinda the successor to Big Finish's Sarah Jane series in terms of tone and style

hemlo ^_^ i need something new to listen to while i draw and i've heard good things from somebody about something called counter measures. but also what is that lol, like do i need context to listen to it? is it a continuation of established characters or is it it's own thing?

Counter Measures! Yayyy Counter Measures!

Okay, so Counter Measures has four seasons, then switches into new counter measures when it moves into the seventies where there's one special and then three seasons (technically the last is three specials but like. That's a season)

Context isn't vital but I would recommend it anyways because it's not actually much. The characters of Rachel Jensen, Allison Williams and Ian Gilmore appear on TV in the story Remembrance of the Daleks. Look at them:

The blonde woman is Allison, the brunette is Rachel, Ian is the soldier. Seven is also there. (But not in the main Counter measures audios)

In the audios they are joined by Sir Toby Kinsella. They form the Intrusion Counter Measures Group and work against all sort of threats. Their series is pretty far removed from Doctor Who, they're mostly investigating plots with weird science things. Some aliens at later points in the series. All of that with the tension of the cold war.

Back to why you should watch Remembrance of the Daleks. Like I said, it isn't absolutely vital, but what it is, is a really great story. It's often put as one of the best classic who stories ever. And considering that you haven't watched much classic and what you have watched was some of the ones with more questionable quality, I think you might like to check out one of the really good ones.

There is also one main range story, 1963: The Assassination Games with Seven, Ace and Counter Measures that takes place between Remembrance and Episode 1. You should listen to it before Season 4. It's free on BBC Sounds here

On the way back to camp, your steps are lighter. Having Wyll join your odd party feels somehow reassuring, a small guarantee that everything will be alright – even though you wouldn’t have wished for him to be infected with a tadpole in the first place.

“So,” Astarion’s murmur dissipates your deep thoughts. His presence annoyingly fills your orbit as soon as Wyll is out of earshot, talking with Gale ahead. Seems that he was waiting for the chance to speak with you.

“Yes, Astarion?” you ask.

“We are travelling with the famed ‘Blade of Frontiers’,” he says. The mocking tone doesnt go unnoticed by you.

“Yes, Astarion,” you sigh.

“You do know what he is famous for?” Astarion asks in a sharp tone and before you can reply, he hisses: “Hunting monsters, my dear.”

Beneath Astarion’s easy going facade is concern.

“Yes, I’m aware.”

“Well, you seem to know him rather well. Can I trust you to put in a good word for your favourite vampire spawn? Hmm?” Astarion murmurs quite close to your ear. “Maybe convince him that my appetites lie elsewhere than the present company.”

“You want me to lie?” you scoff. His recent attentions are still not entirely forgiven.

“Darling, I’m hurt.”

Random thought but idk why ppl thought shadow shouldn't have gotten infected by the metal virus

Like. Yeah he's the ultimate lifeform. He's immortal and literally made to be immune to most if not all diseases. But

The metal virus. Isn't an actual disease

It's a bunch nanomachines that convert living organic material into more of itself

Shadow is made of living organic material

The only way he would have been immune (based solely on what canonical info there is on how the metal virus works) is if he was inorganic or dead, which he obviously isn't. And no just bc he was made in a lab doesn't mean he's not organic

Sure, they probably could've made him immune to it in some way, like say the high amounts of chaos energy in him burn it off on contact or something. But how to get rid of it is never fully explained. All we know is that something about sonic's speed burned it off for him, but it's not explained further as far as I can remember and the virus eventually mutated to become resistant to that anyway

Going super seemed to get rid of it completely for sonic tho, so the cure could've been chaos energy after all. Or it could've been like, chaos control warping time or the warp topaz warping reality to sonic and silver's will or something. Again, it's never fully explained, and who knows if shadow would've had the time to fight it off or cure himself anyway considering the circumstances of his infection

Anyway. Tldr shadow is living flesh and the virus infects all living flesh. Him getting infected makes sense based on what we understand of the virus. That's all
