AOC and Rashida Tlaib just introduced a bill that would promote the creation of state and local public banks. This proposal would increase access to public options for financial services, one which could provide cheap access to needed credit without widespread corporate crime, discriminatory policies, undemocratic political interference, and reckless risk-taking. Even better, the profits of public banks go back to state and local governments, not the pockets of wealthy investors.
In 2019, I wrote about how the only state-owned public bank in the US right now is in North Dakota, a remnant of the rural populist movements that thrived in the Midwest and Great Plains in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The idea for the public bank came from the North Dakota Nonpartisan League, a political party founded by a former member of the Socialist Party of America. In 1919, the year the bank was created, the party controlled both chambers of the state legislature and the governor's office.
I argued that the Bank of North Dakota is one of several examples of "red state socialism"— public ownership and policies for the direct provision of market goods which continue to be highly popular in conservative corners of the country:
North Dakota, a state that has not voted for a Democratic presidential candidate in 55 years, is also the only state with a public bank. For exactly a century now, the state-run Bank of North Dakota has been investing in local economic development, providing reliable access to credit, and providing student savings accounts and student loans for state residents. (In fact, it was the first bank in the country to issue a federally backed student loan). The bank continues to earn a profit, most of which is returned to the state government. As part of its economic development mission, the bank also cooperates with community banks and credit unions, so that even while a few big banks have been rapidly taking over the entire banking sector, North Dakota stands out: 83% of the state has their money in either small-or-medium-sized community banks or credit unions, versus just 29% nationally. A government-owned bank that actively intervenes in private markets seems like a conservative’s nightmare vision of socialism. But the Republican state’s bank is well-managed and serves a vital role in supporting the state’s larger economy, all while [benefiting] and being accountable to the people of North Dakota rather than corporate shareholders. With the success and popularity of the bank, it’s no wonder that this isn’t North Dakota’s only remaining state-owned business: the largest flour mill in America proudly advertises that they aim to “[g]row the business and provide a profit to our owners—the citizens of North Dakota.”

ACTUALLY, i got to thinking about how i forget that a LOT of people have a ton of anxiety over talking on the phone. maybe i can give a few pointers as someone who has been answering phones for their entire professional life.
(these are general rules-- different businesses have different phone answering policies, but these should all apply to places like doctor's offices, libraries, office buildings, small- to medium-sized customer service lines, etc.)
(people who are used to talking on the phone, this post is not for you. this is for people with phone anxiety.)
receptionists exist to connect you with who you need to talk to. if you don't know who that is, say "hi, my name is [x], my problem is [y]. can you help me?" or "hello, how do i [x]?" if the receptionist isn't trained in solving your exact problem, they should connect you with someone who can.
don't get upset about being placed on hold. sometimes they just need to physically walk across the room to grab a file, and the phone cord is not long enough.
don't start rattling off account numbers and detailed information until the person on the other end asks for them. they're more than likely working with some sort of extremely clunky database, and it can be several clicks just to get to the field they need to fill in with that information.
don't get upset about being asked to repeat yourself. that just means they're making sure they heard you correctly so the information they have is accurate.
sometimes the person on the other end of the line is just as terrified as you are. every business i've worked at trained employees on how to use the phones by saying "okay, answer that for me please" and giving no further explanation. it happens.
most customer service people are running on autopilot and if you say anything you think is awkward or embarrassing they'll most likely forget about it as soon as the call ends.

💣💥Mikey Hamato💥💣
Tumblr media
Specific trigger warnings -
Underage drinking/usage of drugs, murder, violence, usage of queer slurs (both in reclaiming and hurtful ways), slut-shaming, victim blaming, animal abuse, overdosing, gaslighting, manipulation, addiction
Specific boundaries w/ this character -
Do not give him a label for his sexuality or gender. Mikey is an unlabeled character, and should stay that way.
General info -
Mikey's birthday is December 7th. He is a Sagittarius ♐️
Mikey's love language changes the closer he is with someone. It goes Acts of Service➡️ Gifts➡️ Words of Affirmation.
Mikey is unlabeled.
Mikey has BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder).
Mikey has ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder).
Personality traits -
Mikey is brash, rude, impatient, ambitious, creative, violent, snarky, egotistical, aggressive, erratic, jealous, self-centered, and hypocritical.
Mikey is the definition of a troll. He likes saying hurtful and offensive things to get attention from people, or hurt others. He actually rarely morally agrees with what he says, though.
Mikey is quick to violence, and would absolutely rather throw a punch then waste his time getting annoyed by someone.
Mikey tends to throw his weight around a lot, as he knows he is able to win any fight he gets into. Physical intimidation is his favorite past time.
Mikey only shows a nicer side of himself with his family and, rarely, Kenichi. He's more playful, and loves giving his brothers shit and teasing them.
Mikey is an extremely jealous person, and will absolutely maim anyone who dare even look at His People. He likes being the center of his loved one's attention.
Mikey is a hypocrite, as almost any opinion, moral standing, or action he takes, is often contradictory. As example, he is a compulsive liar, but also hates liars.
Mikey loves art and drawing, and has a very creative mind. He is a fast learner with it too, and can pick up on many different mediums and styles quickly.
Important details -
His Collar -
His collar was originally put on at 13.
Mikey's collar is made of a mystic metal that was provided and forged by Draxum.
The collar has magical properties, such as growing alongside Mikey. This prevents him from being choked by it as he grows. It also does not chafe his neck, even though it fits snuggly, so there is no scarring.
The collar has a mystic oath bound to it. This oath is bound to Big Mama. When this oath is activated, it makes Mikey unable to fight back, and he will be a puppet to listen to Big Mama. It is not activated often, as it burns up Mikey's ninpo.
Mikey is able to partially resist the control, but the best course of action is to knock him out until the oath fizzles out.
The collar cannot be taken off unless Draxum specifically removes it. It does not scratch, tarnish, dent, or rust.
His relationship with Big Mama -
He is a Mama's boy. He adores his mother, and spends a lot of time with her.
He listens to nearly everything BM says, and is often compared to an obedient puppy by his brothers.
Mikey may tend to get frustrated with BM occasionally, but he still loves her and will often forget about it quickly.
BM is the one who provides most of the drugs/alcohol Mikey consumes.
Mikey has free rein of BM's bank account, and loves spending her money.
Mikey is often 'in the know' about BM's darker business practices, as he's directly involved in them or interacts with the people involved in them.
His drug use -
Mikey has been using drugs/drinking since about 9 years of age.
He first began using hard drugs at the age of 13, as a 'celebration' of getting his collar and officially joining the Nexus.
He has an extremely high tolerance, and often needs to consume extreme amounts of any substance to feel a buzz.
Mikey's first drink was at BM's hotel bar, after being pressured by patrons there.
Mikey overdoses somewhat often. Because of Donnie's advanced tech, and Mikey's own ninpo, Mikey is always able to bounce back/revive.
All of Mikey's brothers dislike his excessive use of substances, but know they wouldn't be able to stop him. Leo attempts to, but it has never worked out.
When Mikey is fully drunk/high, he often tends to swing between extremely affectionate to extremely violent on a dime. He also will likely be more emotional, and is known to cry a lot.
His mystic powers -
Mikey has an extreme amount of mystic energy. The flame on his mask is mystic, and is a way to vent out excess energy so it doesn't build and become a ticking time bomb.
If his mask is not avaliable, typically an object near Mikey will combust within around 10-20 minutes of being near him.
Mikey can control the fire, including heat, brightness, and whether it spreads or not. If he is emotional, this control lessens, and the fire is at risk of burning someone or something.
Mikey's collar also doubles as a way to control and harness the mystic energy.
Mikey isn't exactly aware of his mystic powers. Well, he is, he just doesn't really care, and hasn't attempted to learn more about them.
His relationship with Kenichi -
Mikey and Kenichi are close friends.
They originally bonded over their mutual hatred of Usagi and Leo being together.
Mikey likes that Kenichi is honest, and is one of the few people who are willing to stand up to him and tell him like it is.
The two often play-fight. Mikey goes easy on Kenichi, but Kenichi is still always proud of himself if he manages to get a good hit in.
Mikey helps Kenichi in the kitchen, if the heat from the stove/oven starts to make Kenichi anxious. Kenichi is very thankful for this.
The two often argue about their views of Usagi. Kenichi dislikes Mikey's harassment, and Mikey excuses it as 'just a joke.'
Mikey is an asshole to Kenichi, but Kenichi is aware that that is just how Mikey acts, and doesn't take his words personally.
Mikey calls Kenichi 'leftie', 'breeder', 'fluff', 'fatass', and more.
His hatred of Usagi -
Mikey hates Usagi because he believes Usagi is manipulating Leo and stealing all his time and attention.
Mikey slut-shames Usagi constantly. This is mainly based in the stereotypes that rabbits constantly breed, and Mikey figured out that it bothered Usagi.
Mikey would kill Usagi without hesitation if Leo gave the word.
Mikey bullies and harassed Usagi constantly. This often comes in the form of drawing provocative, crude, and offensive art of Usagi for Usagi to find. He'll also scream at, berate, and attempt to harm Usagi. Leo doesn't let Mikey harm Usagi, but that doesn't stop Mikey from trying.
Mikey refuses to touch Usagi, citing the reason that he 'doesn't want to catch a disease.'
His fame -
Mikey is considered famous in the Hidden City, and within the modern yokai world. He's mostly akin to an athlete/actor/influencer.
Mikey doesn't like taking photos or giving out his signature, and will only do so if forced by Big Mama, or if he's drunk enough. Any other time, he may shove the fan away, or break the camera/writing utensil being used.
Mikey posts often on yokai social media's, but is still extremely private about where he is located or who he is with.
Mikey has extremely vocal haters, as well as extremely vocal fans. He enjoys sending his fans on witch-hunts or harassing people who don't like him.
Mikey doesn't do sponsorships unless forced to by Big Mama. Even then, he doesn't ever care about what he is endorsing.
Mikey hates things like edits/fanfictions/art/threads being made on him, but thinks they're funny to laugh at and insult. He will absolutely call any content made for him shitty.
His role in the Battle Nexus -
Mikey mostly preforms as a rodeo clown/jester of sorts in fights. He entertains the crowd, through jokes and skits. He rarely gets involved in actual fights, unless it's to anger either competitor or get them fighting eachother.
Mikey may also actually fight, when needing to defend his role as champion. These fights are huge for publicity, and are City-wide events.
He's also often involved in interviews and PR about the Battle Nexus. He doesn't enjoy this, but BM forces him to do it.
He is not involved in off-shoots of the Battle Nexus, such as the Street Brawl.
Mikey may also do acrobatic half-time or opening shows, which act somewhat like a circus. He does stunts, tricks, and more in this time.
Fun facts -
Mikey's favorite food is Korean hot pot, and his favorite drink is either apple bourbon or any type of juice.
Mikey hates liars, but is known to lie often himself.
Mikey hates being late to things he cares about, and is always punctual to his Nexus battles. If he's late to something, you know he doesn't want to go.
Mikey prefers traditional art, and his favorite medium is marker/ink.
Mikey loves wearing clothes, but refuses to wear shirts or shoes.
Mikey is extremely good at crying on cue, and uses this to manipulate Splinter and BM to get what he wants. Mikey's siblings have learned when he is fake crying, so they don't take him seriously.
Mikey has a habit of rubbing/wiping at his nose with his hand. He's used to his nose running/bleeding because of cocaine use, and it became a stim of his.
Mikey's right molars and premolars are golden. His original teeth got pulled out after a dare-gone-wrong, and Donnie replaced them with gold-coated lead.
Voice claim - [XXXTENTACION]

Writing Research: Homeless Character
I’m currently writing about a character that is homeless. A lot of this information is base on real accounts and advice from people that suddenly found themselves homeless. I’ve even included a couple of things that I’ve learned myself because at one point I thought I would be kicked out and wanted to prepared myself as much as I possibly could for it.
Shelters
Homeless shelters are a basic form of temporary accommodation where a bed is provided in a shared space overnight. Most shelters even provide homeless individuals with basic necessities like food, water, toiletries, and clothes. While others offer programs that aim to help people get off the street and get back on their feet.
However, not all shelters accept walk-ins and if they do, it’s usually first come, first serve because space is limited. Most of them also required you to fill out an application first so they can determine if you’re eligible to stay at their shelter. You may even need to have certain documents to prove your identity and residence (such as a driver’s license, green card, passport or visa, birth certificate, Social Security card, Medicaid card, eviction papers, etc.) or have a referral from a social services agency to be accepted. That’s because some shelters are specifically aimed towards different types of homeless people like a family, pregnant women, teens, a single adult, etc. Those shelter facility have special accommodation that better suits their needs.
Each shelter also has their own set of rules, restrictions and regulations, which depends on who’s running them and where they get their funding from. In general, well-funded shelters tend to have more programs and better facilities. Though these types of shelters also tend to be more overcrowded than smaller, less-funded ones. Almost all shelters have set opening and closing times. Most of the time, they open at 8:00 AM and close at 4:00 PM. For homeless people working night shifts or irregular working hours, this can be a deterrent.
Generally, shelters are free but there are some cases where they may charge you a fee. They may do so when you stay longer than you’re suppose to, which varies from shelter to shelter (such as after 7 to 14 days) or when you want to continue to keep your belongings stored in the locker while you’re at work. Though they don’t always ask for money. Some may take half of the resident’s food stamp allowance. While others require their residents to work up to 40 hours per week in the shelter in exchange for board and lodging.

Churches
Many of the churches (and other religious or spiritual organizations) provide resources and overnight shelter for the homeless. Some of them may even include free hot meals, clothes, information on applying for financial aid or maybe a few dollars to help pay the rent or a utility bill as well as other aid.
Sometimes, when there’s no more space inside the church, it’s not uncommon to find homeless people sleeping on its steps too. They can sleep there every night without the cops bothering them. The reason why is that churches are on private property. As long as the church owner allows you to be there, you're good. And they usually do give permission.
However, it’s understandable that some homeless people may not feel comfortable going to a church for help. In fear that the church may try to use the opportunity to “convert” them or there might be discrimination based on their sexual orientation and/or gender identity.

Libraries
Patrons, regardless of their housing status, have always found the library to be a welcoming place. It can provide an air-conditioned space on a hot day, warmth in the wintertime, public restrooms for all, internet access, charge your phone, and be a quiet space to read or to keep yourself busy.
For those people experiencing homelessness it’s not unusual to find them waiting early in the morning each day for the doors to open. They’ll spend their entire day there reading to escape from their everyday reality, listening to music, browsing the internet for job listings, maybe even researching ways to help themselves out of their situation or just keeping themselves entertained.
However, many libraries still require patrons to have an permanent address and photo identification to get a library card. But what most don’t realize is that some libraries allow patrons to use temporary addresses, such as the shelters or other social service organizations when applying for a library card. If you can’t get a card, it’s still possible to access the computers without it, you just need to go to the Reference Desk and ask for a new numerical code every hour. Some places may even offer you a temporary guest pass. Either way, everyone gets one-hour sessions per day on the computer.
You also don’t need a library card or a password to access their free unsecured wireless network, usually titled as “Library Guest.”

Vehicles
Those who live in their vehicles have to worry about the legality of their lifestyle – something that is frequently in flux as laws change.
Sleeping in your car is perfectly legal if it’s parked on property you own yourself, such as the driveway of your home. But sadly, that’s not an option when you’re homeless because you wouldn’t be living in your car in the first place. It’s also legal if you’re parked on someone else’s property with their permission, like in the driveway of a friend or of a family member.
It’s possible to pass a peaceful night in a privately-owned parking lot, say outside of a grocery store. In fact, many 24hr businesses such as Wal-Mart and Cracker Barrel have built up a reputation for allowing overnight parking. But these policies are usually intended to accommodate RVers and other people on vacation with the hope that they’ll patronize the business during their stay. Either way, the parking lots are well-lit, there’s restroom access, and some may even offer free Wi-Fi.
There’s also city-designated parking lots, where they offer people living in their cars a safe place to stay and sleep overnight. It won’t draw the ire of the residents or the prying eyes of police officers handing out tickets. They even offer much needed access to restrooms, and other services to help you get back on your feet. But just like the homeless shelters you do need to fill out a application, either by calling them, visiting in-person, or filling out the online form.
If you’re on the highway, there are many rest stops where you can parked and legally sleep at. However, this varies from state to state because in some places they don’t allow overnight parking and might even have limits on how long you can park during the day. While others allow it as long as you don’t stay there for more than 12 or 24 hours. They also have restrooms and maybe even picnic tables too. Just keep in mind that they’re not always well-lit and can be pretty secluded, because of that there’s a higher possibility of people being robbed or attacked. So consider this as a last resort.

Truck Stops (Service Station/Travel Center)
Showers can be pretty expensive at truck stops like Love’s, Pilot, Flying J, T/A, etc. The cost will usually range anywhere from $12 to $17 depending on the place you go to. They all have a large parking area, a fueling station, a diner or restaurant, a convenience store and usually a coin-operated laundry services too. Some may even offer other services like a movie theater, pet wash, workout rooms, salons, etc..
These facilities are usually pretty clean and modern. But if you do use the showers, just be sure to wear flip-flops if you don’t want to get warts or athletes foot. And keep in mind that the truck stops in rural areas are typically very safe and wholesome. But, as the distance to major cities decreases the incidence of prostitution, drug peddling etc. increases dramatically. For example, the Vince Lombardi service area on the New Jersey Turnpike near New York City has the most rampant prostitution.
Also. if you join a particular chain, such as Love’s customer loyalty program you can usually get a free shower if you spend $50 or more on diesel fuel (or if you get 1,000 gallons in a month you’ll earn a free shower or a free hot meal). You may want to consider this if you have a diesel-powered vehicle or a diesel generator that you regularly use.
I have heard that there are some truck drivers that will sometimes give away their free shower credit/coupon to those in need. They don't always have the time to take a shower that day or don’t need it because they already took one and it would have gone to waste otherwise.

Campsite
Regular campgrounds cost around $20 to $60 per night, depending on the season, location, the size of the space, and what amenities they offered. But what most don’t know is that there’s actually a type of camping that’s free and yes, it’s also legal.
Dispersed camping is the term used for camping anywhere in the National Forest OUTSIDE of a designated campground. Dispersed camping means no services; such as trash removal, and little or no facilities; such as tables and fire pits, are provided. Some of the more popular dispersed camping areas may have toilets though. If not, that means you’ll need to deal with your own poop by properly burying it or packing it out with you. Essentially ‘Leave No Trace’ and practice the concept of ‘Pack It In – Pack It Out’.
However, to access dispersed camping areas you’ll need a vehicle to get to them. So this option won’t be possible for every homeless person, only those that still have a vehicle (and/or a tent) to take shelter in. There are also limitations on how long you can stay. Most only allow for less than ten days a month, but it varies for each location. After ten days, you can just move down the road five or ten miles away from your pervious spot. This will keep you from breaking the law.
The general rule is to be a minimum of at least 100-200 feet away from any road, trail or water source. Individual forests might have their own restrictions, so it is always best to check with them before setting up camp.

Gyms
Getting a gym membership means you can shower, shave, use a clean toilet, charge your phone, and spend hours a day in the gym just riding a stationary bike while listening to music, audiobook, podcast, etc. They’ll also have Wi-Fi available to members too.
Planet Fitness is the more popular and affordable option because it has a basic membership plan for $10/month, but it’s only for one location. It gives you unlimited access to their gym (which is open 24 hours a day), their app, free fitness training and free Wi-Fi. However, they do charge an annual fee of $39 and a one-time start-up fee of $1. That said, there’s no commitment.
If you get their $25/month plan, that gives you unlimited access to all of their other locations and a few more perks too, such as you can bring in a guest anytime, use their tanning beds, HydroMassage, discounts on drinks, etc. But it does required a $39 annual fee and a $1 start-up fee, and there’s no commitment either.
If you’re still not sure, they do offer a free day pass for the club of your choice. Just fill out a form online, and a day pass will be e-mailed to you. Keep in mind that you may be required to show some ID upon check-in, and all day pass users are required to take a free tour.
Another option is to consider joining the YMCA. They have financial assistance available, which provides access to membership, programs, childcare, and camps to those in need of support. However, I’m hesitant to suggest this one because the pricing greatly depends on your age, financial state and where you’re located. If you live in a small town, the price will be lower than the membership price in a large city. They also have different rates, which vary by age and what services you want to access.
For example, the regular price for an adult membership (over 30) is $50/month. Even if you applied for financial assistance, the max discount is only 30% and $35.00/month isn’t feasible for those that are homeless or struggling to keep afloat. But of course, you do get access to every Y’s and a lot more stuff than you would at a gym, like the pool, classes, locker rental, towel service, showers, hot tub, steam room, etc.
But I have heard that some YMCA’s do offer free membership if you qualified, such as those that are a member of the military or a veteran. Some senior citizen can get a free membership through their Medicare Advantage plan. If you’re under 18 many YMCA locations offer free summer memberships for teens and tweens. They even have free classes and programs that are accessible without a membership, which is useful because at one point they had free lifeguard training.
Note: If a credit card is necessary, get a prepaid Mastercard. It’s a universally accepted method of paying for purchases without the need for a credit score or a bank account. Prepaid cards are sold at retail stores (usually for a fee of $1.50-2.50 or free if ordered online). With these type of cards, you only need to load them up with money when you get it, then use it to make purchases. [x]

Hygiene
Fitness centers are perhaps the most popular choice for the homeless, but there are also a lot of government-run campgrounds with coin-op shower facilities too.
If you’re traveling along the coast, public beaches will have ample showers available for free (but they may not be warm or private, and you’ll need a bathing suit). If you’re traveling inland, look for public beaches on lakes or rivers. Public swimming pools can do in a pinch, but you’ll usually have to pay a fee to enter.
Public bathrooms are everywhere (such as at the parks, libraries, department stores, fast food places, Penn Station, Port Authority Bus Terminal, etc.). You can use a washcloth and a collapsible bucket (or a large plastic cup) to wash up with. Just fill it up with the water from the sink and use it to quickly wash your hair and/or privates, especially if it’s one of those single locked public restroom. If not, maybe take the bucket/cup into the toilet stall and wash in there.
If all else fails, using baby wipes (which you can get for a $1.00 at Dollar Tree) to stay clean is certainly better then nothing.

Mail
Having an address is essential for applying to a job, for benefits or housing, receiving official communications, opening a bank account, replacing identification, registering the vehicle you live in, and so many other reasons too.
That’s why most homeless first try asking their friends or family if they can use their address for when the paperwork requires a permanent address. However, there are many who don’t have strong bonds with friends or family and so, this route isn’t often taken.
Some homeless shelters offer to collect and distribute mail for their guests. If there’s a shelter someone regularly returns to, it makes sense for them to receive their mail there if possible. But they will have their limits. They may institute a maximum number of people they can receive mail for at one time. Or, more commonly they’ll have a maximum number of days mail will be held before being discarded.
Some churches, generally larger ones, offer mail services to people without permanent addresses too. These are often the same places that offer meal services. So, it may be convenient for people to pick up their mail at a place they already go regularly to eat. Like shelters, church mail programs will often have a maximum holding period.
If it’s affordable enough, some people who are homeless do pay for a PO box, either permanently, temporarily, or intermittently when they need to receive something. If there aren’t any accessible places offering free mail services in the area, this may be the only option.

Water/Food
Soup kitchens have become a place of refuge for those less fortunate souls. Aside from free food, most soup kitchens also provide other necessities such as clothing and hygiene kits. Though some soup kitchens only serve soup and bread, others serve a freshly-cooked full course meal. They also provide a take-out bag with a sandwich and other goodies.
Food pantry is supplied with food, such as fresh produce, canned goods, and healthy frozen items from a food bank. These pantries feed hundreds of low-income people per week. Because every community is different, there are many different types of pantries. But before you go, you should always call the food pantry (or the soup kitchen) to find out when they are open and if they have food. Most pantries offer a three to five day supply of healthy food for low-income families. When possible, pantries provide special items for those family members on restricted diets.
Most pantries will require some form of identification such as a Social Security card, Public Assistance, or photo ID. Many also require a referral letter from a social service agency such as the Board of Social Services, a community organization, or your place of worship to show proof of your need for assistance.
Another option is going to a mom and pop store (local family owned) or pizzeria, bakery, supermarket, Dunkin’, etc. before closing time and asking them if you could maybe take out their trash or sweep up in exchange for their leftovers or day old's. As they would’ve thrown out the still perfectly edible food into the dumpster anyway. Most of the time they'll let you do a little token chore or take pity and just give you something.
As for water there are many places where you get free water and/or water refills, such as public water refill stations or drinking water fountains that you can always find at all the parks. There’s even an app that lists all of the places where you can find them.

Tax prep services send sensitive financial info with Facebook
Tumblr media
If you were unfortunate enough to e-file your US tax using HR Block, Taxact or Taxslayer, your most sensitive financial information was nonconsenually shared with Facebook, where it was added to the involuntary dossier the company maintains billions of people, including people who don’t have Facebook accounts.
A blockbuster investigative report from The Markup and The Verge reveals that major tax-prep services illegally embedded the Facebook tracking pixel in their sites, configured so that it transmitted as much data as possible to the surveillance giant.
https://www.theverge.com/2022/11/22/23471842/facebook-hr-block-taxact-taxslayer-info-sharing
In their defense, the companies say that they didn’t know that they were sending all this data to Facebook, and that they were using Facebook’s surveillance pixel to “deliver a more personalized customer experience.”
The companies had set the Facebook tracking pixel to use “automatic advanced matching,” which scours any page it’s embedded in for personally identifying information to harvest and transmit to Facebook.
https://www.facebook.com/business/help/611774685654668?id=1205376682832142
Facebook claims that it doesn’t want this data and won’t use it, though the company has been previously caught violating fair finance laws by using finance data to discriminate against Black families:
https://www.cnbc.com/2022/06/21/doj-settles-with-facebook-over-allegedly-discriminatory-housing-ads.html
But it’s possible that Facebook isn’t using this data — or that it doesn’t know whether it’s using this data. Facebook’s own internal audits show that the company doesn’t know what data it collects or how it uses it:
https://www.vice.com/en/article/akvmke/facebook-doesnt-know-what-it-does-with-your-data-or-where-it-goes
Remember, Facebook claims that it collects your data based on your consent; somehow it thinks that you can consent to collecting and using your data in ways that even Facebook can’t describe.
As infuriating as Facebook’s role in this data theft is, the real scandal is that Americans have to pay for tax preparation at all. In most of the world’s wealthy countries, the tax authorities send taxpayers a precompleted tax-return every year. You can modify this return (on your own or with the help of a tax-prep professional), or you can just mail it back. For free.
This makes sense. The tax authorities already know how much you’ve made. They know what deductions you’re entitled to. It is surreal that you have to pay a professional to fill in a form to tell the IRS a bunch of things it already know about you.
Every attempt to bring free tax prep to America has been scuttled by an unholy alliance of anti-tax extremists like Grover Nordquist (a sadist who wants to make paying your tax as cumbersome and painful as possible) and the multi-billion-dollar, highly concentrated tax-prep industry.
Companies like HR Block and Intuit have spent millions lobbying against free tax prep. It’s money well spent, because tax prep makes billions for these companies. The biggest tax prep companies formed something called “the Free File Alliance” that purported to offer free tax-prep to low- and medium-income Americans.
In practice, “free filing” turned out to be a marketing funnel that tricked people into paying for services they were entitled to get for free. Intuit alone stole billions this way:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/02/24/uber-for-arbitration/#nibbled-to-death-by-ducks
The monopolists who run America’s tax-prep services claim that “government can’t do anything well” and insist that the private sector will bring “efficiencies” to tax-prep. In reality, these companies literally have no idea what they’re doing — they don’t know what data they’re collecting, nor who they’re sharing it with.
Same goes for Facebook. Companies that are not disciplined by competition or regulation don’t have to be good at their jobs. These companies’ major competence is lobbying Congress to prevent the passage of meaningful privacy laws and laws that would save Americans billions through IRS-prepared tax-returns.
As Harvard tax-law prof Mandi Matlock told Simon Fondrie-Teitler, Angie Waller, and Colin Lecher, this data Valdez is the “almost inevitable consequence of relying on for-profit companies to handle a government requirement. It’s a process that provides users little choice but to hand over their data to Facebook if they want to comply with the law.”

SEUNGCHEOL: have you seen this man — he's literally so baby. you hear him call you from the kitchen, and when you walk in, he's reaching for the top shelf, fingers a few inches shy of the peanut butter jar. you lean against the door frame and cross your arms, a smile tugging at your lips. "yeah, what's up?" you raise an eyebrow. you know what he wants, but you want to hear it from him. "can you get this for me, baby? it's too high." he throws in a pout for good measure, and you can't help rolling your eyes at how shameless he is. if any of his members happen to walk by and gag at his antics, he'll just lift his chin, daring them to say anything. today, though, everyone's out, so he even repeats the question in this cutesy voice that sickens you. you groan. "okay, okay, fine, just stop doing that."
JEONGHAN: he's so handsy. granted, he's handsy with everyone, but with you, he's particularly comfortable with grabbing a handful of ass and pressing up against your back until you throw him a look. he only sends you a saccharine smile, chin barely clearing over your shoulder, and asks you to do him a favor. "it's the hair dryer again," he says and runs fingers through his damp fringe to emphasize his point, as if you don't notice his shower-fresh scent and your sweater hanging off his frame. "i swear you get a stool and put it up there every time because i know i leave it under the sink for you," you tell him but follow him anyway. he laughs into a covered hand. "you can't prove it." but you both know by the way the plug hangs off the shelf that that's exactly what happened. still, he presses a kiss to your cheek once you hand the dryer to him and you keep your mouth closed.
JOSHUA: he doesn't ask you for help often in private, but in public...well, it's embarrassing to be climbing the shelves in the clothing store. "seriously, is there nobody around?" he frowns, looking up and down the aisle. the shirt he wants is just out of his reach, and it seems like every worker in the store is busy. he leans back against your chest, and your arm automatically comes up to curl around his waist, other hand pocketing the phone you were scrolling on. "you want me to get it?" you ask. "the white one, right?" he hums in confirmation. "the size medium right above us, please." you snag it with the tips of your fingers, and his eyes brighten once you pass it over. he holds it up to his shoulders and realizes that it's too small. "...uhm, would you be mad if i asked for the large instead?" he looks up and sees it already in your hand. "no, why would i be?"

Tumblr media
I am absolutely not leaving Tumblr (I’ll rot here, it’ll rot here with me). I am interested in diversifying my social media presence, given:
Elon Musk bought Twitter and is destroying it quickly.
Tumblr is currently owned by Automattic and I don’t know their 10+ year plan
At least a good handful of folks enjoy my social media rambles (hi!)
insurance that if Musk or someone like him buys Tumblr (there is no evidence of this happening, I am preparing for an unforeseeable future), I’ll have spent the years between Right Now and Then in building up another channel.
I’ve been noodling slowly a pinterest account (link) that I’ve had for ages and forgot about until #1 on the above list.
To satisfy #3 on the above list, a key learning I’m finding: do not pin items from the Tumblr dash.
They link to the dash, not the post itself, in testing. A more useful path seems to be:
Going to a Tumblr’s archive
Selecting “Post type: Photo”
Clicking through the desired images to pin, opening them in a new window each
On each individual page, pinning.
In testing, this has preserved the link.
Depending on one’s strategy, you could reblog lots and lots, then go to your OWN archive, and pin from there. This is more work than benefit as I currently see things.
The path of discovery (someone finds pin on my board -> clicks pin -> they have a Tumblr account -> that they are logged into -> and thus follow my Tumblr account -> for future benefit to me) is long, convoluted, and likely extremely rarely successful.
A more reasonable path of discovery: I find a Tumblr that has a neat collection of stuff -> I browse their archive for 5-10 minutes and open a series of image posts -> I pin them to my Pinterest boards -> a third party stumbles across my Pinterest account -> they follow my Pinterest -> there is a future benefit to me.
It would be useful in extreme casual pinning to have an accurate Tumblr dashboard -> Pinterest board link, but ultimately any benefit is washed out with the above process of archive browsing allowing a significantly targeted approach. It’s a guesstimate but more pins are created in a shorter amount of time.
Yay efficiency!
There are automation services (such as IFTTT) that could handle the above fairly easily, but I do not like that many leaks in systems. The security risk of being hacked is increased in response to a tiny, marginal benefit.
None of the above processes takes into consideration “the best time” to pin in order to increase discovery -- that is, “make sure you are pinning between 9 AM to 2 PM on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays!” (this is a fictional example, not advice on times to pin/blog/etc.)
I hold very minimal weight to "best time to...” social media  advice. More effective:
Buy ad space on cheap networks.
Partner with people who have a following -- do not focus purely on people with a large following; diversify between tiny, small, medium, and large followings -- that legitimately like your product, or, introduce your product, send them a sample, and if they genuinely like it, discuss doing business.
And create frequently. Large stuff, medium stuff, quick/simple stuff.
The experience of others is bound to vary as none of this makes inherent sense, but trying to trace “XYZ are the best times to promote!” are far too costly in light of user behavior, opaque social algorithms, and both the monetary and opportunity cost spent in researching said “best times” to promote -- which are going to constantly shift.
(pours two glasses of root beer)
and thus concludes another session of “they call me atty, your exceptionally odd former marketing/advertising forum host.”
Since we’re chatting about pinterest, follow good ol’ evil Netherworld Post via this link.
The general subject matter will be the same as most of my rambles: monsters, queer monsters, and queer monsters kissing queer monsters.

From the Shop of Repairs, the girls were watching what was happening at the Fish Market. Dee shook her head as she saw the Fisherman receive some sort of legal notice. Head drooping, he shuffled off while his wife stayed at the counter.
Miko watched too and told the others, “I could not say anything earlier because it was Tribunal business. This morning Madam Minami san came to Magistrate Lim with their household accounts. I had to prepare a number of documents connected to how he was getting the money to pay all of those fines of his. He was taking the cash from her dower right, which is illegal unless she consents, which she did not. There was a good deal more too. To recover her embezzled funds, she has seized the Fish Market and undone his blacklist.
“There is more but I cannot speak of it.”
Patsu pointed with a giggle, “Look! There is Minami again but now he is leading the Sea Lion's crew! They are headed to the docks. You don't suppose that they are going to take it out fishing, do you?”
Satsuna pointed, “They are! They have pushed off and are raising the sail! This late in the day, that square sail of theirs won't really be that much help.”
Under oars and sail, the Sea Lion was soon lost to sight.
They were surprised when young Ichuru came to their shop and bowed properly to them as he asked, “Good Dee san, can you and your friends please come the Fish Market? Mother Minami san cannot leave her shop and she is alone.”
Patsu smiled at his careful good manners and replied, “We sure can, Ichuru san. We can go get some bento boxes from our market. We will close our Shop of Repairs for lunch and eat over at your mom's Fish Market. Let her know that we will be right along.”
The girls all went up to Sabo's Better Fish Market. They picked up six bento boxes. Strolling across the market place, Patsu stopped by Farmer Cachu's and bought some of their honey almond peach candies too.
Smiling at Madam Minami, Dee gave her a bento box for her and one for her son, Ichuru. “You have asked us to come, Madam Minami san, and we are here. What can we do besides offer you a bento for lunch?”
Bowing to them as she opened her bento and took off the top tray to begin eating, she replied, “Thank you, Dee san. Begin by using my given name of Tanira.
“My foolish husband has so tarnished the reputation of this Fish Market that I have had none ask about my sign for helpers. Beyond that, if he had a scale for weighing catches, I cannot find it and I will be needing one soon. Can you help me with these things?”
Dee bowed back and finished her bite of rice before answering, “We can indeed help you. It is my suspicion that he will bar you from his ice house out of his spite. If he does let us know. We will see you supplied with good clean ice.
“The scale we can put aside a few minor tasks for and have it made this afternoon. We know that you are presently in tight straits for cash. We can allow you the time to pay for it from the market's earnings.”
Miko bowed to her and added, “Tanira san, for the time being, until you can get suitable help, we have six other emancipated minors working for us. We will let you have the services of Minara, who is very quick with the abacus and Takahara, who is nearly as strong as Patsu san.
“They need to be paid five of copper cash daily. Again, let us know if there is difficulty and we will help. We do know how bad the wreck that Minami has left you is. We will do our best to help you recover.”
That evening, down on the dock, Takahara was helping to set up the scale and payment board. She offered, “Tanira san, it is a pleasure to work with you. You have been so polite and clear about what you want. Minara san and I have enjoyed everything so far.”
Down the dock, Minara was signaling the fishing boats to their places to tie up. The Sea Lion ignored her, and charged up to the front of the line, by the scale. Minami demanded, “What are these worthless girls doing here? Give me three silver cash for my catch and be done with it!”
Tanira instantly froze with rage. “NO! Minami, for your rudeness go to the back of the line, NOW!”
“Pay me for my fish, woman, and I will move, not before!”
Stiff with rage, her voice gone very gentle, she replied, “My name is Tanira. You will beg my pardon for your public rudeness and go to the back of the line. Understand this clearly. The Fish Market is MINE alone. I do not have to buy so much as a sardine from you.”
He was about to make a hot retort when the boat rocked severely as one of his crewmen pushed him aside and released the Sea Lion's painter from the cleat and pushed them free. The others bent to their oars and moved the boat to the back of the line. To Minami's incoherent shouting, one of the others overrode him, snapping, “Shut up, Minami san! We want to get paid!”
The next boat, Fish Seeker, was far more polite and cooperative. Amazed, her captain said, “Tanira san, you really want these mud sharks? Mianmi always made us kill them and throw them back!”
She nodded a bow and replied, “We do indeed Catino san. Take this stick for a measure. Let smaller ones go to grow up. Take the bigger ones for us.”
He grinned as he handed Takahara the fish to load into the scale. Minara's abacus beads clicked and a note was added to the ticket.
Soon Captain Catino took the payment ticket with thanks and asked, “So, Tanira san, Magistrate Lim will simply dispense us full payment today? We don't need to wait?”
“Correct, Catino san. Get the cash and divide it among your crew by your agreement. If you choose to go out tomorrow instead of resting, I will see that the scale is waiting for you.”
As the Sea Lion was secured to the mooring cleats, Minami stood and snapped, “Don't bother with . . .”
His words ended in a splash as one of his crewmen simply pushed him out of the boat! The weigh in went smoothly and politely after that.
A crewman grumped, “We'd have at least three or four times as many fish if Minami hadn't broken the pulling sheve block and the rope too.”
Leaving him struggling in the water, where he finally realized that it was shallow enough to wade to shore, his men took their note of payment and went to see Magistrate Lim.
