OC Introduction - Cariane Amell
A little OC profile for @thedasincolor's Meet Cute Monday!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Name: Cariane Amell Jahani (after 9:35, Cariane Jahani-Howe)
Featured in: Under Your Command (series, AO3)
Pronouns: She/Her
Origin/Class: Mage
Specialization: Blood Mage, Arcane Warrior, Battlemage
Weapon: Staff of the Lost, Spellweaver
Role: Warden-Commander of Ferelden
Age: (Awakening) 21
Are they inspired by any real world culture? Carie is mixed/biracial. Her mother, Revka Amell was a (white) Marcher and her father, Cyrus Jahani is (black) Rivaini. She identifies far more strongly as Rivaini, which in my personal HC Rivain has elements of Afro-Caribbean, West African, and MENA depending on the region.
What characters are they closest to? Anders, who was her big brother in the Circle; Zevran & Sten, her besties in Origins (ooh, did she surprise Sten when she greeted him in Qunlat!); Nathaniel Howe, her eventual husband.
Do they have any rivals? She and Wynne do not see eye-to-eye.
Did they romance anyone? In-game, she romanced Alistair. In her story, he broke up with her at the Landsmeet and married Anora. She and Nathaniel end up falling in love during the events of Awakening.
What is your favorite headcanon about them? Vigil's Keep is a not-so-secret haven for mages and apostates. Mage Wardens make up 40% of their ranks (12 of 30) a year after Awakening. As Warden-Commander, she mandates that any former Templar who survives the Joining is required to quit lyrium. Yeah, the Chantry hates her.
Are they friendly? She is guarded and professional until you get to know her. But she is incredibly loyal to her friends and anyone she cares for. Once you're in with her, you're family.
What is the happiest ending you can think of for your character? All the ambient magic present due to the Breach allowed her and Nate to (accidentally) get pregnant in 9:41. She resigns as Commander and they move to Rivain to be near her remaining family (her father and older sister, who survived Dairsmuid). Having a child they want to be there for inspires her and Nate to find a cure for the darkspawn taint, which they do with Avernus's help.

Meet Cute Monday
Adrien sighed and moved around another person standing still on the sidewalk. He had forgotten that he'd be in Gotham during the eclipse and therefore would actually be able to see it. Gotham was supposed to get about 93% totality so it was an exciting event and, for once, the sky had decided to cooperate and it was a rare clear day in Gotham, but he hadn't gotten eclipse glasses, and he needed to get to an empty roof if he wanted to transform and use Plagg's magic to protect his eyes from the sun.
"You're gonna miss it." The God said from Adrien's inner pocket.
"I know," Adrien huffed back.
He finally found an alley that was empty and ducked down it to find a fire escape to get on top of the building he was next to. Looking at it it looked like it was some old theatre, run down and probably abandoned. Adrien went over and started to climb the wall. He was able to get all the way to the top and onto the roof and then smiled. Finally, he could- fuck, there was someone up here?
"Uh... hello?" The black-haired guy waved to him. "why are you on my roof?"
Adrien groaned and gestured to the sky. "Trying to watch the eclipse..."
The guy looked him over. "Are you an idiot?"
Adrien furrowed his brow. "No?"
"You can't look directly at the sun! Here, I have a pair of glasses you can look through. That way you won't burn your eyes." The guy came over and handed Adrien the eclipse glasses he had been wearing previously.
"Uh, thanks." Adrien smiled. "I'm Adrien by the way."
"Tim," he responded.
"Don't you need them though?" Adrien asked looking at Tim.
Tim blushed and gestured to where he was previously standing. "Oh, I have a telescope set up to watch too, it's really cool. We can trade back and forth."
"Yeah, that sounds great." Adrien followed Tim back over to his setup and saw the maps and diagrams he had drawn out, as well as notes to himself and little scraps of paper with doodles on them. All in all it looked like something Marinette would have done and Adrien couldn't help the heartache of being reminded of his platonic soulmate. She would have been prepared.
"Look up! We should be coming upon totality in the next few minutes."
Adrien put the glasses on and looked up and smiled, it was beautiful and amazing, and he was sharing it with someone who he might want to know more.

Meet Cute Monday 51
Masterlist
MCM Masterlist
For @mochegato happy belated birthday (it needed to wait for a Monday)
.............................................
Marinette blinked. She then blinked repeatedly in surprise. She looked down at where she sat, and then back up and blinked yet again. Yup, no question, there, looking under the bathroom door, was a small child with wide brilliant jade eyes staring at her.
"Hi"
Responding with confusing, Marinette watched as the dark, almost blue, haired girl climbed under the door into the stall with her, "Hi?"
With unbound confidence, the young girl ignored social convention and started a conversation causing Marinette to freeze in response to it all. "What your name?"
"Marinette?"
"My friend is M'ari."
"Hmmm, is it?"
"Yup. You speak weird."
Marinette nearly choked at the bluntness of the girl. Thankful that she didn't as not to upset the child she really didn't know what to do with. "It's an accent. You sound strange to me too."
"Oh." The girl paused, tilting her head in serious thought, "Ok."
"Is your… Maman? Carer? waiting for you?"
"Nope. Daddy is outside. The /boys/ toilet smells AND I'm a GIRL. He's going to get me pretzels as I'm a *big* girl now."
The child started to play with the door lock causing Marinette to panic slightly. Not that it would be much different to the situation that she was already in. The large gap around the door which you can easily glance through and as recently proved, the gap below was large enough to crawl under. Still, the idea of being indecently exposed to the world by a child that isn't even hers was terrifying. This whole encounter was convincing Marinette she would never use public toilets in the U.S again, ever, if she could help it. Give her 'proper' French and European doors any day.
"Umm, can you not play with the lock mon chou?"
"I go wait outside now."
"oooo…K, can you close the door please?"
"hmm, Ok, yup, I close the door. You lock it now, I'm hold it."
Smiling to herself as the girl, despite her emboldened entrance, left the cubical with surprising grace for a small child and allowed Marinette some decency. Quickly as soon as the door shut, Marinette reached out and locked the door so she could finish up without an obvious audience.
Exiting the stall, Marinette suddenly found the small girl wrapping her tiny arms around her legs tightly and burrowing her head into Marinettes's skirts, stopping the pair from moving towards the sinks.
"MAMA!"
Blanching at the declaration, Marinette froze before she took stock of the situation. The room was fairly busy but still not a queue for the ladies, but there was a woman dressed in unusual clothes who seemed to be staring at the pair. Bending down Marinette tried to speak softly to the child. "Are you ok?"
Jade watery eye's looked up into hers. "Can you help me go potty? Don't wanna to fall in toilet and get eaten by Killer Croc!"
"What?"
Marinette seriously regretted her weakness for green eyes as she let the child lead her back to the stall she just exited. She also regretted that she allowed Alya to convince her that they needed to stop in Gotham of all places on their road trip. It was world renowned for being an odd place, and this was convincing her that 'odd place' didn't touch the description she would use.
As the girl sorted herself out, she looked up expectantly at Marinette and held her hand up.
"Don't let me fall!" The small pout melted Marinette's heart, as she assisted the tiny bossy person. "I won't. I promise."
Once sorted the girl cautiously poked her head out the door before slamming it shut and looked nervously up at Marinette. All bravado vanished worrying Marinette. In a hushed voice she leaned into Marinette.
"Scary Lady still out there." Biting her lower lips and doing a perfect imitation of Adrien's and Manon's worried kitten face, "Can you stay with me?"
Nodding at the small girl, Marinette offered the girl her hand allowing herself to be dragged to the sinks to actually wash their hands properly. The girl seemed to warm more to Marinette and start nattering about her friend and dolls.
Feeling the heated gaze from the woman the girl was scared of, Marinette swooped down and picked up the girl who melted into her, head resting on shoulder like she was at peace with the world.
"Ok… mon chou," Marinette realised she didn't actually know the girls name, "let's go meet up with your Daddy."
"Ok Mama."
She held on to the girl slightly tighter at that declaration. It wasn't fair, green eyes and dark hair - she was practically how Marinette imagined what her own child would look like. Especially when her hyperfocus was on Adrien (she was eternally grateful that it died long ago and best friend slash sibling relationship grew instead). Remembering the girl mentioned the Pretzels, which was pretty much where Alya was going to be since she seemed to make it her mission to sample all possible pretzels while they travelled, Marinette headed in that direction.
Weaving their way through the crowds Marinette found out the girls name was Lian who seemed to know where they were going far better than herself. Reluctantly she put the girl down and let her lead her towards the correct destination, the few turns they had taken had confused her.
Lian shouted "DADDY!" pulling Marinette along towards a pacing giant of a man with flaming hair peeking out of a baseball hat. Tattoo's peaked out his muscular arms making a blush burn on her cheeks. His frantic energy seemed to focus when her heard Lian's voice as he sought her in the crowds. He expression burst into relief as he spotted the girl practically running towards him. His emerald eyes shining at the girl having an unfair effect on Marinette's heart.
"Come on Mama!!!"
Running towards the man, Marinette was dragged along as the girl moved with an urgent singular focus. In moments the pair had reached the man who swept the girl into his arms peppering her face in kisses and holding on tight.
"Lian!! Baby girl!! Where did you go?! I turned around and you were gone Sweetie!!"
Bashfully the girl buried her face into her dad's chest. "I needed potty. Then a scary lady was there but I found a Mama. Look Daddy!"
Flustered, Marinette tucked an erroneous stray hair behind her ear. "She asked for help using the bathroom. About not falling in and was very nervous about some of the other occupants. I wanted to make sure she got back to you - though she /did/ imply that you were aware of her trip."
The man groaned as he side eyed Marinette with a look as he searched the crowds for something, before gazing down to the now koala of a girl. "Lian!! We've spoken about this!"
Twitching her lip in silent humour, Marinette was starting to think that this 'innocent' encounter was becoming more suspicious and orchestrated by the little girl with how the pair were acting. To avoid drama Marinette started to look about to see if she could find Alya to escape any potential explosive confrontation.
"Sorry miss. Lian… has been," Marinette watched as he tilted his own head in a manner identical to the manner Lian had down early much to Marinette's amusement, "encouraged by her meddling uncles and aunts to interfere," he dropped a soft unheated glare at the girl, "when she shouldn't. There bad nosy influences on her."
Nodding like she understood what was happening, Marinette agreed while silently wishing for her own friend to appear before she made a fool of herself in front of the adorable pair. The trio unconsciously moved towards the balcony edge leaving the stand and walkway uncluttered. The redhead, now unflustered and holding his child close, seemed to have his attention drawn to Marinette and, dare she say it, reluctant to part company. Lian seemed to be egging the man on as well with a mischievous grin which surpassed a young Manon's one.
Biting her lip Marinette sapphire eyes shot up to his own emeralds before darting away to look about the mall. It felt awkward but more in a I'm uncertain what to say next way than I have nothing else to say. Sighing, the man opened his mouth to speak when a loud explosion happened.
The floor shook startling the shoppers as well as the trio. Ducking as debris flew about with dust, smoke and destruction causing confusion.
"Damn! We need to move!" His firm deep voice startled Marinette out of her whizzing planning mind. He grabbed Marinette's hand while still holding tight to Lian who was wide eyed with fear. With the crowds of panicked shoppers, the man manoeuvre the trio into a photo booth pulling Marinette onto his lap and placing Lian into her own. His arm warm against the skin that slip past her dishevelled top from the chaos. She felt tiny yet safe perched on his muscular thighs. Blushing furiously at the intimacy, Marinette tried to ignore her position and focus on raising an eyebrow and look puzzled at the man. In a hushed gravelly whisper he responds.
"The crowds are easy targets and chance of getting crushed in stampede. We're waiting for it to calm down enough that we can sneak off."
"And the risk of fire??"
"Sprinklers and I saw mobsters moving about down stairs from the balcony. They'd be gone shortly if we wait for the Bats and Outlaws to turn up soon."
"Not the police…?"
"… you're not from around here are ya?"
"Mama has an accent!" Lian's piped up voice. Marinette's hand whipped up to her mouth to smother the surprised laugh that threatened to escape. The man looked exasperated even in the tense situation they were in, before opening his eyes wide at as he processed the comment further pausing in his subtle rubbing circles on her waist.
"Sorry about Lian… again… oh, um, I didn't catch your name."
"Didn't offer it. Marinette. Yours is?"
"Roy."
The nervous quiet silence fell between them as they took stock of the situation and Roy fiddled with his earring(?) in his ear. A darting tongue out his mouth to lick his lips drew Marinette's attention there while Roy nods towards the curtain suddenly. "It should be clear enough now."
Slowly they moved towards the exits, all eyes darting about looking for hidden threats. Marinette's heart was beating so loud and fast she could barely hear anything over it. Roy's calloused hands held onto her own tightly, his thumb rubbing what she guessed was meant to be reassuring circles against hers. It just kept distracting her from making plans on how to escape their situation further.
Nearing an emergency exit there was another explosion and the floor underneath her feet started collapsing. Letting out a screech in surprise Marinette started to tumble twisting to try and grasp onto something to stop her falling. Another hand grasped onto her other one as she stared up with wild eyes into Roy's worried ones.
"Don’t let me fall!!"
Anxiety flew through her dangling body as the redhead gave her a strained smile. "I won't. I promise!"
With nothing to push against with her legs, Marinette was completely at the mercy of Roy above her. She hoped his muscles were not for show and that there was strength in them. Relief came when he started to heavy her up, slowly as to not draw attention of what looked like more mobsters on the floor below hunting around for left over victims. With alarming ease, Roy pulled Marinette up and the pair tumble backwards landing with Marinette on top of Roy with him holding her tight to him to his chest.
Hearts pounding in tandem as Marinette shakes in his arms with adrenalin crashing around her. A broken sob came from Lian who pounces on the collapsed pair, fear very real in her tear filled eyes. Loud gun fire and shouts started and could be heard. Marinette felt sick. She had no idea where Alya was. She was stuck with a near stranger (a hot hero of a stranger but still a stranger who happen to save her life with a daughter who had claimed her as a mum). She had been Ladybug for years, but the knowledge that this was all irreparable terrified her. It was all over whelming.
Roy shifted and held the two girls close as he moved them to get them on their feet. "Red Hood is here. We'll be ok but we need to leave NOW!"
Pulling and pushing Roy managed to shelter the pair as more debris shifted as he guided them to the exit where Marinette could see a police cordon with paramedics and ambulances scattered about dealing with hurt shoppers while the police worked with Gotham's Bats to subdue what where was going on.
The trio stumbled and rushed away from one set of chaos towards the milling about support chaos. Once outside and near the barriers, Marinette felt like she could breathe and started twisting about, standing on tiptoes searching for her missing friend. Suddenly two hands braced against her waist and lifted her into the air increasing her vantage point.
"Eeeeps!!"
Her hands flew to rest on Roy's and she glanced down reassured that he as fine lifting her like she weighed nothing. Despite the additional height, Marinette couldn't see her friend easily with the mass people who seemed to be content to rubberneck at the action now that they were no longer in immediate danger. Pouting, Marinette suspected that that was where Alya was. Tapping Roy's hand, Roy seemed to seamlessly understand to put Marinette down on floor only to pull her close guiding them all to a paramedic who looked at the dust covered trio with a critical look before sighing and waving them to review.
Waiting for the paramedic to dismiss them, Roy looked intensely at Marinette who had Lian wrapped up in her arms tightly.
"Who were you looking for? You obviously wasn't at the mall on your own."
"My friend. She insisted that we came here. I've not seen her since before meeting this cutie." Marinette booped Lian on the nose with her own causing the child to laugh and bury her face into Marinette's neck, which was definitely preferable to the tears that had left trails down her dusty cheeks.
There was a heavy ball of anxiety sitting in Marinette's stomach but she refused to let the girl in her arms know. Alya was resilient. They all were. They'd grown up in Paris. The issue was more that Alya's self-preservation skills were skewed towards 'getting the story' and whether they would still be that even in a different location and lacking magic gems. Sighing, Marinette studied the crowds hovering round the back of the ambulance hoping to spot the impulsive red head.
"We'll help you find her. I'm not gonna let you have to hunt on your own. Gotham isn't safe at the best to times. This is it at her worst. Too many opportunists out there."
The tone that Roy used and the layers of something unsaid lightened Marinette's nerves bringing a small smile to her face. A small crinkle by Roy's eye's appeared as he returned a genuine smile, and it did something to Marinette's fluttering heart which shouldn't be melting at the stranger mid attack.
With wounds seen to the paramedic shoo'd them away to deal with the next person needing their attention. In the late afternoon sun, the trio hovered around scanning the other shoppers milling about trying to reconnect with those they lost in the escape of the mall. Interrupting the soft conversation they were having, Marinette's phone blasted loudly with Alya's ringtone. Fumbling with it Marinette managed to answer only to draw the device away from her ear as a loud "GIRL!" escaped the speakers.
"Not so loud Als."
"…."
"Uh huh! I'm ok. I escaped."
"…."
"No I didn't get into trouble. I'm not a magnet."
"…."
Marinette pouted at Alya's response.
"I'm by… ummm… I'm outside by the bill board which has 'Red Arse' on it."
"…."
"You can?"
Marinette could see Roy trying not to eaves drop but failing spectacularly based on the smirk on his face while she scanned the horizon in hope that she could catch her friends impending arrival. Turning away to look in a new direction a heavy weight landed on her back and Marinette stumbled for Roy to quickly catch her before she descended onto the ground.
"Ooof!"
"MARS!"
"Als, please. Stop crushing me. I'm ok."
"Nope!"
Roy's hands upon her shoulders, Alya wrapped around her back and torso, Marinette was cocooned in warmth. Her eyes darted up to Roy's to find them filled with warmth and humour. Seconds later she found small arms wrapping round her legs again, much like they had earlier. Huffing in amused resigned-ness, Marinette slowly twisted to capture Alya in her arms.
"I'm ok. Promise you."
"I'm going to need to tag you. We can't go anywhere without trouble finding you."
"It didn't find me. I was safe. Lian and Roy- they looked after me. Nothing bad happened."
"Mama fell and Daddy saved her."
Glancing at the sky, Marinette braced for the impending interrogation that was all too soon to happen. Alya looked down at the young girl, then at the trio before a dangerous grin crossed her face.
"Mama? She fell?"
"Yup! You have an accent like Mama. She saved me from being eaten by Killer Croc and when Daddy was taking us out the shops he saved her from falling and splatting on the floor with the bad people. I don't want Mama to splat."
"I don't want her to splat either. Thank you for keeping my troublesome Mars safe for me when she *disappeared*. One moment she was behind me and then 'poof' she was gone. I'm interested in how she became your Mama then. I'm pretty sure we'd have met if she had been your maman for a while now."
"Your welcome. Daddy says you have to use manners." Lian looked shiftily about and leant closer to Alya, "I poofed too, Daddy went to get pretzels and I poofed. That’s why I met Mama. She's pretty and is kind."
Alya laughed, mirth shimmering in her eyes as Lian pouted at her. "Oh you are perfect. You've chosen well little one. Mars looks a little like you, like you look a little like your Daddy. And you both are trouble magnets by the sounds of things. This is too perfect, revenge for ALL the disappearance acts from school."
Stretching up Alya beamed a devil look at Marinette before looping their arms together as Marinette fought the entrapment and protesting to the (valid) accusations. Alya turned to Roy and narrowed her eyes to glare at him.
"Tomorrow. 10am. Coffee shop outside Gotham Gallery. Be there or be square. If you can cope with a morning Mars and witnessed her atrocious caffeine order, survive a morning in an Art Gallery without a) trouble and b) listening to her rambles, I'll give you her number."
On his slightly puzzled and dazed nod, she winked and started dragging Marinette off who panics as Roy waves confused and Lian pouts tugging on his jacket. Her little voice in the back ground chimes up, "Daddy! Daddy, Daddy Daddy!! We HAVE to go!!!"
"Als! Why? What? Huh? I thought we were leaving tomorrow?"
"Nah, with the way Red was looking at you and how you've got baby you wrapped around your finger already we need to get you his number and a date girl. Just need an evening to do safety check on him first. Don't worry girl, I'm the perfect wingwoman, I'm not letting you fall for a creep."
"Alssssss!"

‧⁺✧ Meet Cute Mondays ♡°‧
Klingon Matchmaker AU: Worf has been desperate to find a partner, and finally the matchmaker has a suitable date. “This one’s a real catch,” she tells him, “very popular. Everybody’s been wanting a piece of him. Maybe you are the lucky one he finally choses.”
Worf does not think much of such promises. In fact, when his date with the match finally begins, he is disappointed to find him a human. A large one, yes, but still a human. However, his sparkling charm is not lost on Worf — Will Riker enjoys weapons, knows his poetry, has a hearty laugh, and eats messily enough. Desirable to any Klingon. Undoubtably.
His smile is enchanting when he leans forward. “Don’t you have any poetry for me?”
Not again... Worf suppresses a sigh. “No.” This is usually the big dealbreaker. He expects the smile to fade, or any type of disappointment to show on Riker’s features. Instead, his face lights up even brighter. “No?” he asks.
Worf holds polite eye contact. “I am sorry if that belies your expectations.”
“What? Not at all,” Riker reassures him. He puts his hand on the table as though he briefly considered putting it on top of Worf’s. He lowers his voice, eyes all narrow from smiling when he asks, “You’re a fighter then?”
Worf leans back and blinks. He inhales and raises his chin to give his date a proper answer instead of simply staring. “You are the first to ask me that.”
Riker puts his tongue in his cheek and nods like he understands the irony. “I get it. You’re a big guy.”
Ignoring just how many butterflies that statement spawned in Worf’s stomach, he agrees to doing calisthenics with Riker later that week. How ironic that a fragile human, of all people, challenges him to a fight...

The soft vanilla scent reached Roy's nose before he heard her. The top floral scents and earthier undertones filled the workshop contrasting sharply with the smells of oil, sweat and metal drawing his attention away from the bike engine before him he had been working on.
Quiet, barely heard flips of soft shoes colliding with the concrete workshop floor soon followed by sharp clicks of dress shoes made their way around the work space. Harsh whispers could be made out over the sounds blasting from the radio that stood by the tool cabinet.
Roy glanced over to Jason who sent him a raised eyebrow back, he too clearly was not expecting any visitors either. Rising from where he was working, Roy edged towards where the strangers were coming from with a spanner in hand. Just in case. He may be a hero, but this was still Gotham. Jason shifted so had a clear view of the couple, gun rest within a seconds reach if required.
Spinning the spanner like he often did with arrows, Roy almost dropped it as a tiny flurry of pink finally appeared followed sedately by a tall disinterested blonde. Her sapphire eyes sparkled in the fluorescent lights but held glints of a hidden fire. Peach lips pursed before pulling into a tight forced smile.
"[Hello] Hi, ummm I've heard you do metal…" the woman gestured with her hands colliding with each other… "glueing."
Roy frowned in confusion, "Metal… glueing?"
She twisted before speaking in rapid French to her companion, her arms waving around gesturing while the impeccable blonde watched on indifferently.
"[Fe, I need English word. You know, for the fffvvvvghk sound thing. Welding!! It's] /Welding/ [in Italian and] {Welding} [in Cantonese. You grew up in England. What's welding!!]"
Pivoting, seemingly unable to stay still for long, displacing her perfume through the air, the woman's attention focused sharply on Roy.
"[Yes!] Metal glue. Sticking metal together with sparks. To make a box."
The exasperated sigh that escaped the blonde, Fe if heard correctly, startled Roy as the man pinched his nose in a very Bruce and Oliver. Given the high end designer gear he wore, Roy would not be surprised if the aloof nature of the man was because he was of 'high society' and being dragged to the dingey workshop that Jason and he used by the petite energy ball was something he'd happily turn his nose at.
"What my Duchess means is welding. She's heard that you guys weld and have good reviews as a workshop with reasonable rates and wants you to weld her a box."
Blinking in slight surprise, Roy watched at the enthusiastic nodding while the woman beamed up at Roy like he would solve all her problems.
"Ummm, why?"
Suddenly the cute, sweet, almost puppy-like expression whipped off her face and was replaced by a dragon as she snarled. The petite woman dressed in soft grey and pinks growled deeply whilst 'Fe' rolled his eyes just humouring the now fuming dark head 'Duchess'.
Roy was confused as to why, now known two aristocrats, were here, unless the blonde was security, and having such strong emotions. Placing the spanner down Roy leant against the workbench to study the pair. Unexpectedly the Duchess hissed at his question before responding through gritted teeth almost glaring laser beams into Roy.
"My douche baguette, unrisen loaf of a fiancé, decided to cheat on me. In OUR home!!! But, gracefully, I didn't not turn him into a kebab with… with knitting needles!! And ended things… nicely."
The blonde snorted and the Duchess narrowed her eyes at him. Impassively he shrugged at her with a small smirk, before tilting his head back to Roy.
"We've separated. Ended. Kaput. Done! I pawned the hideous eye sore of a ring… but…. He kind of… maybe sort of… wants it back. Could you pleeeeease weld(?) me a small box so I can put a euro in it and send it back to him. Especially as he unreasonable refuses to collect the knock off jewellery."
"A euro? Won't he just cut the box open and see what you've done?"
"Ha!!! He can't use a drill… a screw driver. Or even a kettle. I'm safe. Incompetent crumb minded fool. He'd be too lazy to think of that until it's forever too late."
Pirouetting yet again Cantonese flew out her mouth with vigour as she wandered about the work space. Roy glanced over at Jason who had taken interest but was currently frowning. The frown was not in his 'I'm going to kill you' or 'Kill me now' way but in his 'I'm concerned and going to protect you and most likely stuff food down your throat aggressively' way. 'Fe' grabbed Duchess's shoulders as she stormed past and stared deeply into her burning fire eyes.
"Nope. Marinette none of that."
"But Felix," he flicked her forehead at her protest, "hey!! Owww!!!"
She rubbed her head scowling at the man who may have been her security, but the flick suggested more familiarity.
"YOU are not at fault. His jealousy was unbecoming. I can't say that you are perfect. Decidedly not so with your time keeping in fact, BUT that's beside the point. It is his fault for being unfaithful, not yours. Duchess, I love you despite the wrong anatomy, get it into your thick skull, you.did.nothing.wrong."
A tired sigh escaped his mouth now as he looked at two towering men in the room.
"Excuse my friend. She seems to believe mechanics can weld her a tiny metal box and has not considered going to a welding company."
"There are welding companies?!"
"Yes Marinette!"
"Oh… oh well, thank you for your time. I'll find the right place now. [Goodbye!]"
"Wait! Hang on!!"
Roy stumbled slightly as he made his way closer to the eccentric duo, but not a couple if he was reading between the lines correctly. He waited until the pair's attention was back on him.
"We can weld. I, err, I'm happy to weld a revenge box for you. When did you need it?"
The excited squeal and cheek kiss caught Roy by surprise. He slowly touched his face where the soft lips touched as Marinette proceeded to do what could only be described as a 'happy dance' around the workshop smiling like the sun. Watching her friend who was back into the charade of apathy and disdain, Roy shook his head in soft amusement as he caught Jason eyeing the fair haired man with curiosity.
Despite their somewhat poor experience with the upper class and aristocracy, the pair before him seemed not to meet his expectations. The aura they gave off was more akin to Tim. That they know what was expected of them, and remembered most of the time but the mask slipped when comfortable and not paying attention to the audience. Or at least that was what Felix was portraying.
Marinette.
Well … she wasn't acting like she was better than probably everyone in the room. To be frank, Roy hadn't pegged her as a Duchess when she came in, so maybe she spent a lot of time avoiding the upper crust.
She also wasn't Tim's type of strange. A child left to bring up themselves and decided to choose heros, specifically Bats to role model against.
She emoted. Well maybe that was it. She emoted like Jason, wearing her heart on her sleeve, reacting to the bruises it receives with anger but still refusing to hide it from the world. Unlike Jason, Roy could see that despite the hurt thrown her way she wasn't clinging onto it and letting it fester. There wasn't an obvious mask to her emotions to turn them onto a performance accompanied by a war with words.
Ok her revenge was petty and potentially cruel, but there was no direct violence that he could tell. Hell, Roy bought into it completely. Being unfaithful deserved more than a box and a coin in his eyes, but the Duchess wanted to tackle it with pranks and not violence, Roy couldn't really argue. He supposed it stopped her being seen in a negative light if the press found out.
Leaving Jason to watch the couple, Roy moved to his work bench and grabbed a scrap of paper and turned his cap backwards so he could focus on designing a small box with dimensions that would allow the illusion of a rattling ring. Focusing on the diagram and trying to recall what pieces of waste metal was stored about the place, Roy drowned out the soft lilt of Duchess Marinette's voice, Jason's low drawl and the almost nasally sharp cuts of Felix.
Ignoring the rest of the world, Roy got quickly to work cutting and welding a small box until it just needed the coin to be shut in. Looking up from his work Roy was yet again taken off guard. Where Jason had been working, Marinette had taken off her dove grey jacket and was tinkering with Jason's bike. Jason has let someone touch his baby! Off to the side, Jason was deep in discussion with Felix. Roy was bemused, this… this was unexpected and he did not know what to make of it.
Coughing to draw attention to himself, Roy looked awkwardly at the comfortable trio. Running a hand through his hair, knocking the cap off only to fumble catching it.
"The box is nearly done, I just need a coin…"
"Oh! That was quick!! Ummm, [hang on, kwami where did I put it-]" Marinette fumbled with her jacket, "Ah-haa! Here!"
Moving towards Roy, Marinette missed seeing the toolbox that sat next to the bike he had been working on. Tripping, her eyes blew wide in surprise and arms windmilled as she tried to catch herself. Moving on impulse, Roy leaped forward and caught the woman before her face planted on the floor.
A choked laugh and a snort followed with a mutter 'clutz' could be heard behind the embraced pair. Roy elected to overlook Jason's and Felix's peanut gallery comments in favour of watching a rosey blush spread across the woman in his arm's face. The rouge made her azure eyes pop out more, shimmering in the dingy workshop. His eyes darted to where her tongue licked her coral lips as she sighed.
"Thank you, Monsieur, for… err… saving me. Ummm, I found the coin."
Dragging his attention away from her lips, Roy reluctantly helped Marinette find her feet. It was sheer will power that he let her leave his embrace to take the coin and seal it in the small metal box.
"I'll just finish these off… and make sure there are no sharp edges."
"Shame. Would be nice to have him cut by the thing he desires."
"Ha, yeah, well, I don't think postal workers would approve of it."
"Hmmm, true. I err, thanks. Ummm I'll let you finish and I just…"
Roy smirked as Marinette pointed towards the bike and sheepishly headed back in that direction paying attention to her steps. Shaking his head in fond amusement, Roy returned to finishing off the box.
It didn't take too long to finish welding and file off the sharp edges. Roy, content with his work, made his way back to the trio he had been ignoring. Jason and Felix seemed to be in a deep debate about Austen and Dickens much to Roy's amusement, while Marinette had grease swept upon her face where she had clearly tried to push her fringe out the way and her tongue poking out in cute concentration as she tinkered away on Jason's bike. Deciding not to be drawn into yet another literacy debate, he rattled the now sealed box gaining the attention of everyone and dropped into a mock bow.
"Sorted. Ready and waiting for you, your grace."
Felix raised a curious eyebrow at Roy's semi theatrics. Roy personally felt it was unnecessary as he was nowhere near as dramatic as his theatre nerd of a friend. Marinette on the other hand beamed a full watt smile at him. It was blinding and heart melting. Roy did not understand why anyone would want to hurt this sunshine blessed child.
"Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!"
"No probs. Seems fair to help you get your revenge."
"How much do I owe you?"
Roy scratched the back of head. He hadn't thought this far, just more that he was intrigued by the woman and wanted to find out more about her. Helping her with this prank… revenge… mission, was nothing really. The metal was from scraps around the workshop mainly. Plus is felt - wrong - to charge her for seeking retribution. He had no issues with poly or open relationships, but cheating and doing it under cover was wrong! Nope, he didn't feel right taking menu for this.
"Nothing. Ummm, the guys sounds like a douche and deserves it. Consider this on the house."
The wide eye's blink in surprise. Roy watched as Marinette bites her lips in confusion trying to figure out how best to respond. He worries he's overstepped as her eyes dart towards Felix and Jason, silently begging them for help on how to reply.
"Oh, umm…"
"We can't accept that. Payment is non-negotiable. My Duchess understands skills and labour required to hand make things and refuses to accept your work for free. [it's a lesson she has learnt the long way round!]"
"Okay, well as Roy isn't gonna accept payment in cash, how 'bout they meet at the diner 'cross the street for breakfast?"
"Hmm, brunch would be preferable. Duchess isn't a morning creature."
"Say 11?"
"11 would be acceptable."
"Perfect. I'll meet you here for tea while the payment is in progress."
"Earl Grey?"
"That would be most agreeable, Jason.'
"With milk?"
"Are you a heathen?! Miniture god's! No."
"Ha! Just wanna check. Can't have my hosting skills criticised. There are heathens *cough* Bruce *cough* who do."
"Hmmm. Fine. Tomorrow at 11."
"See ya Felix."
Felix nodded as he marched towards Marinette, looping her arm through his and used a finger to close her gapping mouth.
"Duchess, no need to be uncouth and act like a fish. It's very unbecoming. Now coming along darling, we have a box to post."
Plucking the box out of Roy's hands, Felix smirked at the redhead and guided the Duchess out of the dingy car workshop, leaving the soft trail of vanilla as the sharp dress shoe clicks retreated. Roy's eyes narrowed as he squinted in confusion at Jason. His bat crazy friend grinned at him like a maniac.
"What… what just happened?"
"I just got you a date with a girl who you've been making heart eyes at."
"But… what?!... Huh?"
"You can thank me later when we compare juicy gossip notes afterwards."
"Compare?"
"Yup, keep up Roy. I got you a date with a girl who'd keep Ollie off your back, adores bikes, is an adrenaline junkies from what Felix was saying and you have the hots for. And I have gained a new person to join my book club."
Jason puffs up his chest like he was proud of his accomplishments. Roy runs his fingers against the brim of his hat using the habit to process everything while his mind catches up.
"You don't have a book club… oh my gawd! You said comparing notes! You got yourself A DATE TOO!!!"
Letting out ripples of laughter as Jason spluttered, Roy couldn't help but grin.
Tomorrow was going to be fun.
