on Consequences in minecraft streaming

Okay so one of the real common things that I've been seeing lately is an increasingly passionate call for certain characters to experience Consequences (and the rest of the post always makes it clear that they mean a specific type of definatively negative repercussions) for their actions during QSMP events. And aside from the absolute deja vu of having seen these same calls when DSMP was airing, and how that turned out (sorry, the syndicate did not all have a meeting where they apologized for their sins while tommy told them they were horrible people), I'm not 100% sure if that's going to happen or pan out in the exact way that I think people are aiming for and expecting will happen.

I keep seeing a lot of people saying that it would be bad writing if people don't get "consequences" for their actions, and what they're specifically asking for is punishment and for people to realize what they're doing was wrong. BBH is supposed to repent for furniture thefts and torturing the people keeping him from his kid. Phil is supposed to realize that actually he's good at PVP and apologize for saying that his team has been suffering in purgatory. Tubbo is supposed to fill in his tubhole and only do things other people ask him to do.

But like, so much of the time, what we're seeing is these streamers being interested in writing morally grey characters, just some little guys who make bad decisions, and the thing about characters being morally grey is that they don't always have a come to jesus moment and become morally pure. Sometimes they just keep being morally grey. Sometimes they get worse on purpose.

Maybe BBH never decides that torturing that guy was bad, because he wanted to get his FUCKING KID back. Like, I seriously think you have to be prepared for that character arc to never end in Bad going "that was wrong to do", and maybe his cubito will still be happy. Phil is a dude with anxiety who's been sure that his kids are going to die from the moment he got to purgatory, streaming at 1-4 in the morning while other teams break into their base, even if bolas goes insane and scrapes out a win I think it's way more likely that that team is gonna go "what a wild fluke that's the power of gas masks" and not have a moment where they go "it was unfair of us to assume that we were underpowered, I guess everybody else was the underdogs! Our bad." Tubbo is tubbo, he's already building a new create thing, he is not going to apologize for leaving marks on the landscape with mod packs.

Like, the streamers are interested in making human characters, making interesting decisions, not communicating moral lessons to their fanbases. Bad is operating within a Taken film, not a sermon. Quackity wants his cubito to be pathetic, gay, and out for revenge, not to communicate the importance of forgiveness to those who hurt you. Tubbo's victory condition is having a nice date with Fred, full stop, does not care who he has to run over to get there.

Absolutely I think there are people intentionally doing corruption/villany arcs on the server, and they probably intend for that to lead places. There will be Consequences, as in, things will happen. Cellbit is doing cannibalsm on purpose, and not as a teaching moment about how good cannibalism is for your social bonds. But like, maybe that leads to him being thrown out of his family and not trusted because of his sins, OR maybe it leads to him murdering his way through a federation complex, facing down a bloody cucurucho, and going "you made me into you and I hate this" and eating him. Narrative consequences does not always mean punishment and a return to moral purity. Sometimes people just do bad things, and then repercussions happen, but they don't necessarily "see the error of their ways". The specific call for like— retribution and repentance as the consequences people are going for— for punishment— if a character has done something bad they don't "deserve" good things to happen to them and it's bad writing for that to happen— I just don't think that those are the stories the creators are necessarily interested in telling.

And secondly, what people are often asking for is character conflict— they want people to be socially excluded by characters they feel have been wronged, and learn the error of their ways that way until they apologize sufficiently. Phil is gonna hate BBH or Tubbo is going to hate Roier or something once they return from Purgatory. People want their cubitos to have beef with each other.

But the thing is, on a meta level, I don't doubt that the entire admin team and streaming team on QSMP is just screamingly aware that this fandom cannot be trusted with conflict. The election was just part of it, but I made it through the election, and Purgatory has been so much more unpleasant— and I am not just talking about twitter. This website, tumblr, has been full of people fighting each other for their teams. And I am not just saying "red team fans have been bad", because boy have I been staring in horrified awe at the takes that some red team people have been putting forward (what on EARTH do you mean BBH deserves to have his kid die, touch grass immediately), but if I step outside of red team circles, everyone is talking about how red team people are horrible hypocrites who win too much and only deserve to suffer (I saw this posting the day that blue had back to back wins, so it isn't even tied to how well red is doing). The quality of the discourse has been increasingly unpleasant, and this has been taking place in streamer's chats, on twitter, in discords, and here on tumblr.

Every QSMP streamer is increasingly aware that having conflict with another streamer is basically sending a wave of negativity their way, and setting off bombs in the fandom at the same time. And they're all friends with each other! Sometimes they decide that the story beat they're going for is worth it and just tell each other to stay off twitter, but like, you have got to be prepared that maybe they will just be friends again. And that might be weaker writing, for people to keep forgiving each other, but that is an unfortunate aspect of the technical aspects of this medium and this fandom. Maybe the creators would be more willing to have character conflict if they didn't know that that meant the person they were mad at in-game would get death threats on social media.

Like no fucking wonder Phil apologized for getting mad at Wil within the same stream and before Wil said sorry to him. This is why the French have given up on revolution arcs, you know it's why the women are all very careful to get along with people. All of those creators know the cost of making anyone into a villain, and I'm just saying maybe get prepared that we won't have inner-party conflict. Maybe they'll decide it's worth it for a fun story moment! Maybe they won't. Maybe don't get 100% married to the idea that the only good writing possible moving forward is for people to be thrown out of the community and then repent for their sins.

Shadow and Bone Season 2 premieres March 16, 2023 on Netflix

Eric Heisserer and Daegan Fryklind (Co-Showrunners / Executive Producers / Writers) & Leigh Bardugo (Author / Executive Producer) on what fans can expect this season:

HEISSERER: The most wonderful thing about Season Two is that we get to advance the story of these characters that we'd left in precarious positions at the end of Season One. There's a lot of potential for them this season. They have to face the consequences for their actions, and then they get to meet new people along the way. The Grishaverse also expands in this season, both in mythology and in characters. In doing so, we expand the world, we go to new locations, we visit Novyi Zem and Shu Han, and those are all integral to the narrative.

FRYKLIND: We've also really dug into more of the mythology this season in terms of the amplifiers, but also the creator of the amplifiers, Morozova, who he was, what his backstory is, and how he ties into this world. We go out and we go deeper.

BARDUGO: I think the readers now trust our writers the way that I do. This season I was able to step back and put the show more firmly in their hands. I think when we approached Season One, a lot of people were like, "It's impossible. It can't be done. Why would you bring SHADOW AND BONE and SIX OF CROWS together?" And I think now, we have that trust. And I think it's going to be very, very exciting for them to see the way that trust pays off in Season Two. Every part of the Grishaverse is coming into play. We are going to get to see some incredible new characters. We're going to see characters interacting with each other, questing with each other, fighting and laughing with each other, who we never got to see together in the books. And I think that's a unique thing about this show. Readers are not only going to be surprised by the way that these storylines crash into each other, they're never going to know where the next move is coming from—and that actually was a pleasure for me because I got to be surprised by my own stories.

How to go about making a sequel

As mentioned in the last TDSP Weekend Update, we have been getting questions or noticing that there are questions on how to go about making an Immortal Desires sequel. Plus, we’re hurt and want one too. Of course, our ways of operating works for us, but it may not work for you. We encourage you to find a different way if ours doesn’t work. But there is only one way we do things that we strongly recommend...

DO NOT DO THIS FOR MONEY. This means no diamond options, accepting donations, paying your crew (or in ID’s case, coven), or selling the final game. It is against the law, and you will be sued for copyright infringement.

Now on with how we operate...

1. What we use. Art- Medibang Paint, Illustrator (not free) and hand drawing for sketches Programming-Ren’Py, Gimp, Figma Writing/Editing-Google Docs File sharing-Google Drive, GitHub (programming only) Crew Communication-Discord, Google Meet Fan Communication-Tumblr, Reddit, Facebook (on DS fan page)

2. Communication is essential. We have a private server on Discord to organize conversations, and always keep notifications on. For weekly meetings, we use Google Meet since it’s cheaper than Zoom. If you need it for free, Google Meet only allows 1 hour of meeting time, while Zoom allows 45 minutes. Encourage each other to have meetings within your departments in between full coven meetings. For the head coven leaders, we advise you to have a weekly meeting with each other to discuss what needs to be done, and share with the next full coven meeting.

3. Have some sort of file sharing program. Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, yada, yada, yada. We use Google Drive because it’s free, easy, and has a lot of storage space. Here you put all of your work into one place for people to see, share, and edit. Dropbox is another popular option, and it’s a pain in the ass.

4. Put a list of tasks people need to do and check off. Again, Google Drive is the way we do things, but we have to check constantly on what needs to be done or what is finalized. If you have the money and your coven members don’t mind setting up an account and learning, you can use a task manager site like monday.com, Trello, Asana, or Click Up. Trello is quite easy to use, and has a free plan that just uses the basics of organizing tasks.

5. Don’t worry about not being good/not having professional experience. None of us do our jobs on the project in our careers. PB does theirs in their careers, and people are still pissed off with how they write a series. All you need is effort, a willingness to learn, and cooperation. You’re better than you think you are at doing what you do.

6. Set an expecting date, not exact date. We’ve all learned this from the BOLAS release date. PB said 2022. Then when they changed it from 2023, people got upset and suspicious. They did the same for other books, and then canceled them. If you can’t keep your word on anticipated book dates, how can fans trust you?

7. Keep fans updated and communicate with them. Our TDSP Weekend Updates are not to brag. It’s to show you that we are working every week on getting this project done. You don’t need to update as much as we do. Just keep fans informed that you’re working on things by showing what you’re doing. We always love all types of questions because we want to get to know our fans better. The ones that make us laugh are the best!

8. Fans are more understanding than you think. This is just from our experience. They know you are doing this on your own time with no money being gained, not having experience, and working with people all over the world. Fans just want a story to make sense, have a lot of time with LIs, and have character development. It’s when a company that makes money off of a product that people get pissed with when it’s cheaply made.

9. Pitch in wherever and whenever you can. Are you a writer, but can help with art? What about a programmer who can do the editing? Just let others know that you can help out and things will work faster.

10. Do A LOT of research. This doesn’t just mean historical research. This means the book research as well. Brush up on the characters and settings using the Choices wiki. Replay the book over and over as a refresher. Play different MC/LI routes. You can watch videos on Youtube, but sometimes it’s more helpful if you want to make your own choices to see what the outcome will be like. Take note on any plot holes in the first book that needs to be filled in.

**BONUS TIP** Put this on a resume/portfolio. Just because this is volunteer work, or your job on the project is not what you are applying for, employers are quite intrigued that you can dedicate such time and effort to perfect other skills to get something done. One of us is looking for a job, and the employer was so intrigued by what they did on TDSP that they were offered the job. Although they turned it down because it wasn’t a good fit for them, what you’re doing doesn’t mean that it’s worthless for you financially.

Lastly...

There comes a point in anyone’s life where they want to stop bitching and start doing. 

This is what happened with our Captain and First Mate. All they did was bitch to each other and anyone else who would listen about the problem with DS. Then one day, they got fed up of doing so and decided to take matters into their own hands. They still bitch, but at least they’re getting shit done.

ROD, Hero, and now ID fans are going down the same path, and we don’t blame them. Do whatever you need to do to make it right.

The state chairman of the council, Prince Preye Aganaba, said the unique approach was initiated to spread the gospel of Tinubu’s competence, capacity, fitness and experience to all the nooks and crannies of Bayelsa. Speaking at the weekend when he led members of the state ICC to visit a former Bayelsa deputy governor, Werinipre Seibarugu in Yenagoa, Aganaba said the campaign approach would also help to correct misinformation, half-truths and outright lies against Tinubu. He said their findings discovered that persons against Tinubu had not come to know him personally and only depended on lies told them by opposition political leaders. Aganaba said: “Our conviction springs from the fact that nobody will know the character, personality and competence of Tinubu without calling on him to lead this country. Nobody will know his qualities without falling in love with his leadership style. “We believe that people must be informed so that they will stop speaking and acting out of ignorance. That is why we believe that we must meet people one-on-one to help them understand the person of Asiwaju and join the winning train.” Aganaba explained that the ICC was formed to complement the efforts of the party’s Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) with a mandate to solicit votes at the grassroots and sensitise voters to increase the APC support base. He said: “The Bayelsa State secretariat of the Tinubu/Shettima Grassroots Independent Campaign Council is up and running with state and ward coordinators already inaugurated. “We are focused on increasing the healthy support base of our presidential candidate and canvassing for votes in the rural areas ahead of the February 25th presidential and National Assembly elections. Aganaba said the APC had been blessed with a presidential candidate “who is savvy in governance with a plethora of outstanding projects to point at,” describing Tinubu as easy to sell. He said: “APC aims to capture more states and win more seats at the Senate, House of Representatives and state house of assemblies in the 2023 general elections and the ICC will complement that effort with a vigorous grassroots campaign for the Tinubu/Shettima ticket.” [ad_2]

The Party called on Frank to tender apology as well as a retraction of his allegation against Sani A statement in reaction to Timi Frank’s allegations signed by Alhaji Salisu Tanko Wusono, APC’s Publicity Secretary in Kaduna State, said Frank was on a new assignment to complement his income as the so called Ambassador of United Liberation Movement for West Papua, to East Africa and the Middle East. On the same day, Wusono said,  Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the APC presidential candidate, was in Kaduna to interact with Northern Leaders at Arewa House. "All roads led to Arewa House as APC supporters, PDP die-hards and non partisan citizens of Kaduna State trooped to hear Tinubu’s  plans for the North when he becomes President of Nigeria by the Grace of God and the people’s votes. "Consequently, the PDP presidential rally was reduced to a Town Hall meeting and to cover this embarrassment, the party alleged that thugs attacked their members at Ranchers Bees stadium," he said. "However, in a bid to set the records straight and clear his name, and  APC’s integrity, Timi Frank will hear from  our lawyers in due course, if he does not retract that libelous statement and offer an unreserved apology to our Gubernatorial candidate and our party", Wusono sternly warned.

They live in a small coastal town in massachusetts called Holyoak and they go to the local college to learn culinary. They live in a single dorm and they have a cute widdle black cat named Chickadee

One day (for various reasons) their life was flip-turned upside down with discovering the existence of monsters, portals, different dimensions, and rifts in spacetime

One of the reasons for them discovering all of this was them meeting a man named Thomas who's a human from a different dimension called the Palisades. He's a well-known Judge over there. (Thomas is @bevtastic 's character)

Robbie gets an offer to join the Interdimensional Defence Agency (IDA), says fuck it and accepts, and Robbie and Thomas stay friends by virtue of their similar jobs.

Robbie is tasked to go to a different dimension (A half-medieval half-wild west desert town called Argyle) to stop a threat that was growing there. Threat turned out to be a massive mind-controlling dragon who wanted revenge for the rest of her dragon species that were killed off by medieval "heroes". Robbie was not cut out for this as their first job. They (with help) subdue the dragon eventually but not before she burned down multiple towns including Argyle to a crisp. Robbie feels very bad about this.

Robbie, Thomas, and the rest of the party receive a mysterious letter leading them to an old abandoned mansion in Holyoak and get roped into a rescue mission to save Thomas's old friend Percy who has apparently been bodysnatched by a bad guy and trapped somewhere for what felt like thousands of years. This is the arc where we switched from Monster of the Week to DND, and Robbie gets connected to a nature deity Adelaide through a purple necklace. They also get a familiar, who is an owl with pitch-black feathers and glowing yellow pupilless eyes that Robbie named Mr. Muffins.

Robbie and Thomas become very good friends :)

Thomas dies.

Robbie goes to the Palisades to find out what happened to him. Turns out he wanted to reveal the secret of interdimensional travel to the public and work to make it open, free, and safe. The people in charge did not allow him to do this by legal means so he aimed to do it illegally, which was when he was murdered by a group of bandits.

On top of that, one of the main reasons why he wanted to reveal the different dimensions is because there is a HUGE interdimensional threat coming our way, and we need to act on it if we want to live.

Percy finds Robbie and asks them to help with this threat, who apparently is a singular person named Siris that has been locked in a prison for thousands of years and somehow got out. Robbie doesn't have much of a choice and accepts.

In the Palisades, there are monsters called Behemoths. they emerge from people who get bitten by a behemoth or who touch the black tar-like substance that runs like rivers in certain areas of the Palisades. During a battle, Robbie gets bitten by a Behemoth, and now they're a candidate for Behemism (aka turning into big giant monster syndrome).

Because Robbie has Behemism and Siris is part of the reason for Behemism existing, they're mind roommates now. Robbie and Siris do not get along very well.

There's more to Robbie but this is their main backstory!!!

Emile Azarel: A character i play in a different campaign that does MOTW.

He/him pronouns, he's trans, demisexual, and demiromantic.

He's 19 and he's 5'3

He doesn't know his actual birthday but the day he celebrates is January 23rd

His MOTW class is The Expert. He's a fire genasi

He was born in central Russia but he doesn't know his parents well because when he was ~8 months old there was a big monster attack that unfortunately killed his parents. A monster hunter named Avery Azarel found Emile, took him in and raised him.

Emile learned to hunt monsters with Avery and the two traveled around together as monster hunters.

Eventually Emile wished to have a solid place to live rather than constantly traveling, because he wanted friends. He found a town in the pacific northwest called Salmon Peak that had everything he wanted: Russian culture, a fairly small easy-to-get-around layout, and some very weird mysteries going on. (Just because Emile wanted to settle didnt mean he wanted to stop monster hunting!)

He moved to Salmon Peak and has met a bunch of new friends! He's also learning more and more about the town, which is turning out to be somehow even weirder than he expected.

Emile is a very sweet, polite boy, but considering the fact that he's only ever been around one person mainly for his entire life, he has a bit of a ways to go when it comes to interacting with people. The monster hunting life means that when there's a monster, you kill it and that usually solves all your problems. Emile has transferred this logic to people as well (if they're a monster, kill em!) and he's learning through friend influence that maybe human lives are a bit more sacred than that.

His favorite color is blue because he loves the sky!

A lot of people underestimate his skills because he's little and looks very young, but he is a very good monster hunter. Because of Avery (the best monster hunter in the biz), his last name has a bit of a reputation.

Emile is blind, autistic, and has vitiligo!

They're widely considered the best monster hunter in the biz. Their name is well-known and they're requested for help all around the world

Because of this, they're constantly traveling and having a house would not make sense. They just pack their things, stay at motels/hotels/etc., camp in the woods and move around to wherever people need them.

Since they've been pretty much everywhere, they always seem to know at least one person from each town. They never seem to get too close to anyone, though

They are fluent in many different languages!

In the past they were paired up with another monster hunter and they made a great duo. That was a couple decades ago; they go solo now.

Years ago, an unexpected and incredibly destructive monster rampaged a small town in Central Russia. Avery came as fast as they could (they were nearby in the area) but they still couldn't finish off the beast before it tore the whole town to shreds. Dozens of homes were crushed, but surprisingly most people survived, with the exception of a couple of people who died under the rubble. Avery felt awful (this was their biggest failure in a while), and as they were searching through the rubble for any more casualties they found little baby Emile, miraculously unscathed. They took him in and raised him from then on.

Nobody, not even Emile, knows very many details about Avery's childhood, their family, their age, or really any information about them. (Emile has been trying to figure out Avery's birthday for AGES so they can celebrate, but Avery has refused to budge)

Their main weapon is 2 pairs of bolas! those are those chains with 2 balls on either end, usually made to be thrown at people's legs to restrain and trip them. they use the bolas both as restraining tools and as their main weapon, because i think weapons where you spin them really fast in front of you are cool

There's a scar over their left eye; whenever someone asks how they got it they always spin a different elaborate tale of an epic monster battle. Nobody knows which (if any) is the true story

there is a WHOLE LOT that I am leaving out if you couldn't tell. There's a huge chunk of their past that I'm leaving out because it's all a big bundle of spoilers. Someday I will be able to elaborate more on Avery!

A noite é realmente algo muito belo! A luzes das estrelas, o luar, o reflexo dessas luzes, a noite me traz paz...

Não somente as luzes naturais me encantam, mas as próprias luzes provenientes das iluminações artificiais, ali em contraste com a noite, formam um belo jogo de cores. 

Quando The Sims 2 trouxe em sua segunda expansão os vampiros e a cigana casamenteira com sua bola de cristal, esses personagens reforçaram a ideia de que a noite é onde vivem os mistérios, aquilo que os nossos olhos não estão habituados a ver, até mesmo o sobrenatural.

Vários lotes foram incluídos, com suas luzes fortemente coloridas em contraste com o preto, como o vermelho e o neon, ah, como eu amo o neon! E com essa expansão veio MUITO NEON.

O sistema de baladas e encontros incluídos também representam o sinônimo de diversão, quando nos soltamos e nos sentimos menos intimidados pelo clarão do dia e somos encobertos pela sensação de liberdade. Somado a isso também o sistema de química que foi adicionado representa como a noite desperta emoções.

Eu realmente amo a noite. E eu amo como ela foi retratada nesse pacote de expansão.

Por isso decidi iniciar um novo projeto: construir um novo centro da cidade chamado Infinite Black Sky

Por quê Infinite Black Sky?

A noite não é infinita, mas é essa sensação que eu quero trazer.

O centro terá como inspiração diferentes lugares de todo mundo que possam refletir os prazeres e mistérios da vida noturna.

Comecei com meu primeiro lote (que na verdade são 4 mini-lotes) inspirados no Quarteirão Francês, em Nova Orleans.

The night is really fascinating!

The lights of the stars and the moonlight, the night brings me peace...

Not only do the natural lights enchant me, but the lights from artificial lighting, there in contrast to the night, form a beautiful mixture of colors.

When The Sims 2 brought in its second expansion pack the vampires and the gypsy matchmaker with their crystal ball, these characters reinforced the idea that the night is where the mysteries live, what our eyes are not used to seeing, even the supernatural.

Several lots were included, with their brightly colored lights in contrast to black, like red and neon, oh, I love neon! And with that expansion came VERY NEON.

The system of ballads and meetings included also represent the synonym of fun, when we loosen up and feel less intimidated by the daylight and are covered by the feeling of freedom. In addition to this, the chemical system that was added represents how the night awakens emotions.

I really love the night. And I love how it was portrayed in this expansion pack.

So I decided to start a new project: build a new downtown called Infinite Black Sky.

Why Infinite Black Sky?

The night is not endless, but it is this feeling that I want to bring.

The downtown will be inspired by different places from around the world that can reflect the pleasures e mysteries of nightlife.

I started with my first lot (which is actually 4 mini-lots) inspired by the French Quarter in New Orleans.

I’ve been wanting to post this little Merthur teaser for a while now...

Summary:

Mordred, a young fire fairy, has dreamed of meeting his idol, Merlin Emrys, his whole life. Now having finally transferred to Camelot, Albion’s most prestigious institute for fairy and specialist training, his dreams are finally coming to fruition.  Now if only he could summon the courage to utter more than a few words to the man, he’d be set.

Where first year students focused on discovering their primary element, second year is where the real fun begins. Fairies and Specialists are partnered up and must learn to become one fighting unit. To inspire the incoming class, instructors Arthur Pendragon and Merlin Emrys put on a demonstration the students will never forget.

But things don’t always go according to plan, and after a malfunction in the battlefield,  Merlin sets down on a dark path and Arthur struggles to ensure he doesn’t lose his husband forever.

A little story blending characters of (BBC) Merlin with the Fate: The Winx Saga universe. Featuring Fire Fairy!Arthur and Specialist!Merlin (complete with Dragonlord awesomeness).

Chapter 1 snippet: [Combat Demonstration]

In the centre of the maze was a small clearing where two men stood back-to-back. One was blond with broad shoulders, dressed in a blood red shirt, dark pants, and black combat boots. He seemed to be standing quite stiffly with his large arms folded across his chest. The other man looked more heavily armed - an obvious indicator of a specialist. Though he was slender, he was far from scrawny. He was dressed in a black bodysuit of armour that hugged every curve and exposed every muscle on his body, the only pop of colour was a dark red snood that hung loosely around his neck. He had twin swords strapped across his back, and looked to have a steady supply of smaller knives stashed in holders on his thighs. Where the blond stood perfectly still, the dark-haired man stood casually with his arms at either side, and seemed to sway in the breezy. He reached up with a gloved hand up to comb through his hair, leaving it spiked in all directions.

“Handsome, aren’t they?” Asked a voice. Mordred shook his head and turned away when Freya leaned in beside him. He closed his mouth, suddenly aware he’d been gaping much too long at the specialist. 

On his other side, Elena crossed her arms over the railings. “Arthur and Merlin are the instructors for fairy-specialist matches. They both graduated at the top of their classes and received high praise in combat operations. They’re said to have the strongest bond of their generation. More importantly.” Elena winked. “They’re the best-looking couple on campus.”

“Couple?” Mordred asked in surprise, suddenly feeling his stomach in knots. 

“It’s an unfortunate fact, although not unjustified. They are...perfect for each other.” Vivian spoke with a begrudging attitude and Mordred could tell she had a mixture of love and hate aimed at the men. He wondered if it had anything to do with her love of this so-called Prince Arthur and jealousy of his bond to Merlin. 

If Mordred were to be perfectly honest with himself --although he’d never say it aloud-- he could understand her feelings. After years of reading of his hero and finally getting to see him in person, even from afar, was a dream come true. Hearing he belonged to someone else left a bitter taste in his mouth. Mordred bit back a flare of jealousy, breathing through the rising heat in his core.

Gilli peered down at the valley with look of indifference. “It’s only logical that a strong fairy would be matched with an equally strong specialist,” He said. “I hear they were chosen to represent all of Camelot when the Kingdoms of Albion gathered. Apparently they were responsible for showing the Council the true power of a fairy-specialist bond. They had only been bonded for half a year when that happened.”

They all stared down in silence as the rest of the students filled in the perimeter of the valley, everyone finding a place against the railings. Their group leader -- “Guinevere, or Gwen for short,” Elena has said-- began to speak. When she spoke, her voice filled the entire valley, and it was crystal clear as if she were standing beside each and every student at once. 

“When you first came to Camelot, many of you had only just begun testing your abilities and begun understanding the power you possess. You practiced control and honed your primary element through practice and force of will. Some of you held great power but lacked control. Some of you struggled to release control and open yourselves to the understanding of the full spectrum of your powers.

“As you enter your second year, we will continue to build on these skills, and some of you may even awaken additional elemental abilities. Some of you may instead delve deeper and discover sub-elemental strengths.” Gwen turned her attention to the men in the valley. Arthur, arms still crossed tightly against his chest, returned a nod and stepped forward. As he spoke, he let his arms drop, gesturing along to add emphasis to his words. It was now Merlin’s turn to cross his arms, bowing his head as if entering a trance, and Mordred could understand why. When Arthur spoke, he spoke with command, strong and sure and without hesitation. Each word had purpose.

“As fairies, you hold an incredible connection to nature. Magic is all around us; it drifts in the air, through the rivers and streams, and runs deep through the earth. Even the most juvenile fairy can summon his or her element with strong enough emotion. As Albion’s future, you must continue your training so that you may one day join others before you as leaders of our land. As fairies, it is your duty to maintain peace and balance throughout the land.

“However, even the most powerful fairy has their limitations. You will have learned by now that magic is not infinite, and can be depleted. Some of you may still struggle with focus when pulling a single raindrop from a storm or lighting a single blade of grass from a dry field. The more complex an action, the more mental focus is required. And while your mind is moving a mile a minute, or you’ve just performed a magically taxing feat, your physical body becomes compromised. It doesn’t matter how strong you think you are if your enemies can catch and incapacitate you when you’re vulnerable.”

Arthur extended an arm in the direction of his partner.

“Specialists, while lacking in elemental magical ability, embody primal instincts and reflexes far beyond that of any man or fairy. In the heat of battle, their speed and strength can make all the difference in who emerges victorious. Outside the battlefield, they are responsible for furthering Albion’s technology and bringing each generation forward so that we remain ahead of those who threaten the peace.

“In today’s demonstration, you may see something you’ve never seen before - the Burned Ones. Rest assured these are only shells of the real thing. They are conjured from Specialist Technology as training dummies; however, it doesn’t mean they don’t fight back. This year’s final exam will test your abilities in combat and test how well you and your partner work together to defeat a common enemy. Watch carefully and you might just learn something.”

Arthur turned his back on the crowd and walked back to his place behind Merlin. The men prepared themselves for the battle. Merlin opened his eyes and dropped his arms to his sides tilting his head from side to side. Mordred absently wondered if it was out of nerves, or impatience. Unfortunately he was too far away to make out much of a facial expression, although he did remember reading that specialists were naturally more fidgety of the two and did not enjoy staying still for too long.

A hush fell across the crowd and the growing silence made the air feel tense. He could feel the others tense beside him. Gilli and George let out audible gulps. Even Vivian seemed to shy away from the railing, choosing instead to step slightly behind Elena. Sick with unease, Mordred scanned the valley, desperate to find the source of tension. He could see others matching his actions.

A scream echoed through the valley.

One by one, Burned Ones emerged from the hedges. They moved erratically, staggering forward as if moving in incredible pain. Mordred took in the sight of the creatures. They had humanoid features, walking on two legs, although some chose to crawl on all fours. They were creatures of darkened flesh, misshapen with protruding bones and oozing fluids. Some even had dents and holes through their bodies. Their arms were long and hung as low as their knees, finished with hands with long, dagger-sharp nails. They stalked alone, turning away from one another when they met up. 

The smell of burnt flesh rose from the valley, and many  students covered their faces from the stench. Mordred pulled his scarf above his nose, but was otherwise unable to look away from the sight. There were about half a dozen creatures in the valley now, each slowly making their way to the centre. There was one that finally reached the clearing, pausing briefly as it stood in direct sight of the fairy. The duo remained standing back to back, and from where he stood, Mordred had a clear view of Merlin, who cocked his head ever so slightly to glimpse at the creature behind him. The creature reared his head in a horrid screech and launched itself forward.

Arthur widened his stance, stepping forward towards the advance. Mordred sensed the fire rise around his hands even before he saw it. Merlin scooped low, launching forth a bola to entangle the creature’s legs. Arthur sent a quick burst of fire at the creature, burning it from the inside out.

The creatures continued to advance in succession, and all eyes were trained on the team below. The two men moved seamlessly around one another. When one advanced for an attack, the other circled around to defend the other’s back. The specialist always remained in front of the fairy, creating almost an invisible barrier in which he occupied the outer circle. He would defend with an easy swing of his swords and push back any oncoming attackers until the fire fairy could recharge for the final blow. 

Mordred couldn’t help but think of the beauty of it all. The fire reached out like ribbons, curving around Merlin like a second skin, wrapping around and passing him like a promise to do no harm. Where Arthur’s movements were strong and centred, Merlin moved like a whip. One moment he’d be almost three body lengths away from his fairy, only to slingshot back, seamlessly ducking around Arthur to kick and launch another attack to a Burned One who’d appeared behind just a moment ago. There was a moment of fear when Mordred saw a Burned One leap down towards Arthur, only to be pierced through the chest by Merlin’s sword and catapulted back beyond the hedgeline. The most amazing part was that the two moved in complete silence. No “hey, look out behind you” or “cover me!” It was as if they were in complete control of their surroundings, even at the centre of chaos.

The advances seemed to come faster now, and the men were often fending off two or more creatures at a time. Gradually the attacks stopped, but only because the Burned Ones changed tactics.

“They’re not supposed to do this,” Vivian whispered behind him. Mordred spared a moment’s glance back in question. “Burned Ones are loners. They never attack in unison. They never hunt in packs.”

“T-there must be some mistake,” George shook his head in disbelief as the Burned Ones continued to collect themselves. Soon the men were completely surrounded. Even so, the monsters continued the swarm, crawling over one another to create some awful wall of bodies. “Shouldn’t we be calling for help? How can they stay so calm?”

The final swarm continued to build in the centre of the valley, and Mordred found he wasn’t alone in pressing up against the railing in anticipation of how the final surge would be dealt with. A few students shouted in protest at the sight, unbelieving of the situation. Cries of horror echoed in the valley, but the fairy and specialist team remained silent. Even Gilli, who seemed almost robotic through the whole demonstration, tightened his grip on the railing. Freya and Elena were gripping onto each other so tightly Mordred was worried they’d draw blood.

It was rumoured that Burned Ones could attack in packs when under the influence of greater powers, and whether or not the demonstration meant for this to happen, it was still a bizarre and chilling sight. It was intimidating enough of a sight from their perch on the edge of the valley, and Mordred had no envy for the two men who now stood surrounded by a wall of deadly monsters.

But no sooner had the pack come to a halt, did the men change positions. The energy seemed to shift as the fairy stepped forward and the specialist took a step back. Arthur waved his arms in a flourish, sending a circle of fire around them and raising the wall higher and higher. It continued to rise until it surpassed the wall of Burned Ones. Simultaneously, a silent buzz charged the air, causing a few students to rub their arms or pat themselves down where their hair began to stand. Mordred leaned closer over the railing, barely glimpsing the blue-white jolts of electricity woven into the wall of fire. This must be an example of secondary elemental abilities, Mordred thought. A few of the Burned Ones charged the wall, testing the barrier, and Mordred was relieved when he saw them fry instantly. The rest backed up, seeming to sense the change. 

Suddenly, the air seemed to thicken and vibrate. Soon the earth began to quake. The specialist reared his head back and roared:

"O drakon, e male so ftengometta tesd'hup'anankes!"

For the moment, Mordred was sure he’d lost his hearing. The air seemed to have disappeared. The trees no longer swayed. All hints of forest life seemed to fade far into the distance.

Suddenly, a low swoop, sounded through the valley. 

Swoop.

Swoop swoop.

Growing stronger and faster the sound of beating wings came closer and closer until --

“A dragon!” Someone cried out, and students began to shuffle towards the safety of the forest. Guinevere held out a hand, and slowly the students simpered down. Many still had their attention fixed on the sky, though they had now curbed their desire to escape. The dragon was slender and white, blending in almost completely with the clouds. In one smooth motion, it tucked its wings and plummeted into the valley, flaring them out just before it crashed into the ground. It reared its head and unleashed an incredible stream of fire through the valley.

Mordred couldn’t breathe.

The maze. The Burned Ones. Arthur. Merlin. Everyone and everything in the valley became completely engulfed in flame. The fire was so intense Mordred could feel the heat penetrate deep into his bones. The flames were more intense than any fire he’d ever been able to conjure. He could only pray that his hero would survive. Had Merlin summoned this creature? Did he intend to be at the heart of his dragon’s fire? Mordred’s mind was racing and he counted his breaths until he could see into the valley again.

As the flames died down, the students slowly regained their composure. Vivian and George had almost disappeared in the treeline behind him, huddling against a nearby tree trunk. Freya and Elena had also huddled together, although they remained standing. Gilli had stepped away from the railings when the heat became too much, but remained staring into the valley. Mordred remained closest to the railing, most likely protected because of his fire fairy blood. The valley was a complete devastation. The fire had burned away the greenery to ash. The Burned Ones now laid as a circle of dust. It was incredible that anything remained.

In the centre of the maze, an orb of fire remained burning. Remnants of dragon fire seem to trail from the earth to the centre orb and soon all traces of dragon fire extinguished. Slowly, the orb began to die, sinking into the ground and vanishing with the breeze. 

In the centre stood the two men completely unharmed, a pearl-white dragon curled protectively around them. 

The cheers that erupted from above the valley were deafening. Before he could protest, Mordred found himself pulled into a group hug with his friends around him. Students everywhere were shouting praises, whistling, hooting, and flailing their arms in excitement. Some were just happy to have survived and remained slumped on the ground. Others thanked the angels they were still alive. Everyone turned when the dragon rose from its position and lifted off the ground, soon vanishing into the clouds above.

“Incredible!” Elena gasped. She, like many others, was still panting from the heat and adrenaline. “That was...It was just so...incredible!” Mordred could only nod, not trusting himself to speak just yet. Beside him, Freya nodded enthusiastically at Elena’s words.

“I told you he was amazing.” Vivian was beaming, completely ignoring how her hair stuck up on one side. “Arthur is so cool! I can’t wait to meet him!”

“I must say,” George said, smoothing down his shirt, cheeks pink from excitement. “I never expected to see a Dragonlord in action, let alone on the first day of the school year. This is truly a gift. A memory of a lifetime!”

“He’s amazing.” Gilli wore a small smile on his face. He looked around the group, nodding enthusiastically. “Amazing.”

“And we get to learn from them,” Elena echoed what they were all thinking. “This is going to be the best year ever!”
