duuuude finding a fellow conan dub appreciator in the year 2022 🙏 the english dub is criminally underrated imo-- it was clearly localized with love and the VAs gave a lot of unique personality to their roles. (Viktorin + Jewell do a killer job as Conan and the use of the Shinichi voice for the internal monologues is so. good.) (also I finally have the info I need to determine if my SAVE copies are bootlegs like i've always suspected so thanks!)
I've found that there are actually quite a few FUNimation dub appreciators still around!
But yes!!! Totally agree. FuNi's English dub is genuinely my favorite way to watch DetCo, and it's so nice to see it get recognition for what it did well. I mean no disrespect to the new Bang Zoom! dub; my most popular post on this site is celebrating a Bang Zoom! dub, after all (unfortunately not captioned, though I did put together a sub/dub breakdown here). It's exciting that Conan is getting official English-dubbed releases after years of nothing, and there are some real skilled, experienced folks in the cast and staff.
And admittedly, I've only seen Bang Zoom!'s rendition of Episode One: The Great Detective Turned Small despite having every DetCo Blu-ray that Discotek's released sitting on the shelf in front of me right now, but I can't help but feel that in trying to correct the inaccuracies of the FuNi dub, they've lost a lot of the charm. Conan thinking in Shinichi's voice isn't faithful to the original Japanese performances, true, but it's a perfectly fair way of adapting the manga and a choice that resonates so much more with me. Why would you think in a voice that you don't consider your own? Conan thinking in Conan's voice strikes me as contradictory to the character, in all honesty. It was such a disappointment to me that the Bang Zoom! dub didn't continue this practice.
The Bang Zoom! script itself often comes off to me as stilted, too; one of the biggest strengths of FUNimation's dub, in my opinion, is how natural it could sound. But part of that is due to the loosey-goosiness of its translation. It takes a lot of creative liberties—definitely too many at times!—but for the most part, I think it's absolutely excellent at making the dialogue really work in English. The Bang Zoom! production sells itself as a more accurate Detective Conan, and I sincerely do respect that, and I love that it uses the original names, but I also feel that in striving so much for accuracy, it loses the naturalness that FuNi's dub absolutely shone in.
Of course, a quick glance tells me that other Bang Zoom! Conan projects have different ADR directors and script writers, so maybe the films still wrapped in plastic on my shelf have a different feel to them than Episode One. But gosh, while I initially watched Detective Conan in Japanese with subtitles because I was turned off by the name changes of the FuNi dub, actually experiencing it all these years later told me that you can still have a fantastic dub, even if it's not 100% faithful.
Sorry to ramble! I'm super passionate about dubs and subtitles and that sort of thing. Happy that my S.A.V.E. bootleg post was helpful! Still can't believe that Case Closed of all things got so bootlegged, though I must say: for anyone interested in collecting the old FuNi dub on disc, I can't recommend the original art box releases enough. Sure, they're not as nice and compact as the seasonal sets, but you get more extras (dub bloopers!) and the occasional English dub subtitles and video options. I really regret not getting them initially!

wait wait wait wait. you CAN floor it to make it past the train in time? I just replayed hl2 like a month ago and despite like idk twenty attempts I *still* had to do the backwards run away from the train in highway 17... dang...
Oh, maybe it was never fixed? My mind was blown when I was finally able to beat the train a few months ago because I’ve always had to use the workaround, but it just occurred to me that my last playthrough was in Half Life 2: Update, where it’s apparently fine. Perhaps HL2 is still broken. Is anyone else still having this problem?
(Context for anyone who's not familiar with the Highway 17 train bug.)

hey idk what your streaming setup is (so perhaps this is already your setup and unhelpful) but you can use OBS and set up streamlabs notifications as internet window sources and get the benefit of streamlabs notifications without the overhead of the streamlabs program, if its an issue. OBS also has twitch notif integration so you can see follows and things like that on ur end, if you want to ditch streamlabs entirely.
ooh!! much appreciated! ill try that out next time i stream :D

@megamaam replied to your post:
You’re the second person I’ve seen talk about Gonarch’s Lair like this, which I find pretty interesting since it’s my favorite Xen chapter by FAR. I definitely died a fair number of times while playing it, but that was usually due to me mucking up my own long jumps than anything else… maybe its because the chapter introduces the long jump dodge and then sort of immediately requires mastery?
I do think that in a few areas it needs better telegraphing of where the player should be running, though. Especially since the penalty for messing up on that is pretty heavy
I’m def not implying it’s a bad chapter by any means, the experience I had with it just didn’t quite align with what I considered fun myself. I died several times as well, and at least some of them I would def attribute to not good signposting and the fact that the long jump module would throughout the entire Xen portion of the game just not work properly like 1 out of 4 times (it was bad enough that I eventually quicksaved before p much every long jump because it was so unreliable).
It’s weird that the Gargantua chase section almost immediately following Gonarch’s Lair was actually my favorite part of Interloper, but the directions to flee to were not only better signposted, the whole chase felt a lot more fluid somehow? I can’t tell if I was getting stuck on the level geometry a lot less, or if having gone through Gonarch’s Lair had made me better at it, but it was a lot less painful. I think the Gargantuas were also easier to outrun, while there was an autosave moment in Gonarch’s Lair where she’d pop out and chase me down a narrow path and it was very difficult to not have her just trample me for half my health because there was nowhere to dodge and I was otherwise too slow to get away with sprint and jumps.

All Your Base, Bird School Which is For Birds, Snake People or Sneeple
All Your Base: How long have you been on the internet?
I have a suspicious feeling my ten-year anniversary is coming up in a few days, since I want to say it was February 14 2007 or something like that? Not very long compared to, like, everyone else I know, but…
Bird school, which is for birds: What’s your favorite class you’ve ever taken in school?
This one is pretty tough. Probably my Cold War International History one for university that I took last year because it’s the only thing I’ve done that tied class participation to a final grade, so everyone had to talk and contribute, which is much preferable to the surly silence some folks offer.
A close second would probably be my Latin America course this year, since folks seem keen to have views and thoughts.
Snake people, or sneople: What are your thoughts on the government?

for the writing ask meme: 1, 17? :0000
1. If you’re an author, how many WIPs do you currently have? (Be honest!)
2 currently published; one of which I intend to finish and the other of which may end up gathering dust a while longer. (Or not? I may have been struck by inspiration. No promises.) Plus 1.5 more in various stages of notes/outline/drafting that will not necessarily see the light of day.
17. Describe a fic that is still in the ‘ideas’ stage.
I have several (3-ish?) spicy freemance thoughts that are threatening to turn into fics, all inspired to varying degrees by my decade-long genuine love for the ship, my desire to overshadow Alyx/freemance content created by gross cishet dudes who make the rest of us look bad, and pure. fucking. spite. We’ll see if any of those actually manage to pick up steam. If they’re still gathering dust in my brain after another couple of months, I’ll probably submit them to the kink meme (that’s a thing now! yay!) and let someone more talented take a crack at them.

for the ask meme: 1.... 10? :)
1. If you’re an author, how many WIPs do you currently have? (Be honest!) Hahahahaaaa...
....HLVRAI fics only is 7 started fic wips
10. Mutual pining or enemies to friends to lovers?
That’s a big tough one, on the one hand I adore mutual pining because it’s usually silly and the dancing and skirting around Person A and Person B as they think the other is uninterested until the two finally talk and understand each other when well done is just very very good.
But on the other hand friends to lovers is always soft, you have this relationship but it’s do you take it to the next level. It’s also sometimes a dance but I think it’s one that Person A and B get each other already, they can dance but it’s really about letting loose and keeping that trust you already give that person.
(Basically don’t make me choose they are both good tropes alskdjfskdjf)

6, 9, and 20 for fanfic writer asks?
What has been the hardest fic for you to write?
I’m really impressed that everyone chose different questions. Seriously.
Uh, the fic I’m working on right now, always, lol. But seriously, I tried writing a sequel to MSI once and...woof. That puppy went through three drafts (my normal number of drafts is one, two if we’re talking about Human Resources and the first draft was a self-indulgent mess) and I still couldn’t get it right. I never ended up getting it right, and it’s still languishing in my Google drive somewhere. Ugh. Hate thinking about that thing.
Besides all of that...the fic I’m working on right now is HARD. I wrote three different fics just to procrastinate on it. I am AT THE FINISH LINE, THOUGH.
Is there one character that you refuse to write? why?
Benrey and Gavin Reed lmfao @megamaam. Re: Benrey, I think a central tenet of his character is that it’s meaningless improv and I refuse to ruin that. Re: Gavin Reed, he sucks.
What story that you have written makes you the happiest to re-read?
Out of the fics on my AO3, I only really like three of them: Drugs, Bombs, & Dangerous Sex (Animorphs), Martin and the Dream Boy (The Magnus Archives), and...Homestead (Kamisama Kiss), which nobody has read. I wrote Homestead in a DAY, it was NONSENSE, I put NO THOUGHT INTO IT, but Jesus, something about it is just so raw and personal in me. I read that story like opening a wound, and I just see so much love and tenderness in it. Literally the most self-indulgent thing I’ve ever published, but it’s just so unfiltered and raw. Probably because the central relationship in it is very closely based off my own, and it makes me fond.
Thank you for the question!

KDE 2019
This year I participated in the Kemetic Deity Exchange for the first time, and recieved a request from @megamaam to honor either Hethert or Wepwawet!
I decided to honor Hethert, since I had felt her presence once before and never formally approached her. Early this morning I cut up half of a banana while singing happily to my favorite songs, before presenting it to her. I also presented her with three pieces of rose quartz. After presenting it, I read aloud @starsandepithets 's hymn to Hathor from their adoration cycle.
Tumblr media
Sekhmet was kind and allowed me to use her shrine for the exchange. After setting up everything, the sun burst through the cloud cover and lit my room with morning light.
Dua Hethert!
