WINNER! 2014 ReLit AWARD (NOVEL CATEGORY)
Nate’s nervous mother chews gum at warp speed and has a bob that resembles Darth Vader’s helmet. His icy father dabbles part-time in the death trade at a funeral home after working for a decade in the insurance racket. His older sister Holly is always lurking in the shadows or away at school. Nate, a creative, messy, and anxious teen, has chosen Randy Savage as his hero. As he finishes high school, the world to which Savage belongs is quickly waning in popularity, and Nate begins to see the wrestler’s downfall mirrored in his own life. But not until the family dismantles for good in 1994 does Nate’s life truly begin to fracture.
Savage 1986-2011 chronicles the middle-class implosion of Nate’s nuclear family, bracketed by July 1986 — when he first saw Randy Savage in person — and the wrestler’s sudden death in May 2011. When Savage dies, Nate is freed from beliefs — once a source of beauty and escape — that had come to constrict him, fusing him to a moribund past.
The novel is about the blurred lines between child and adult roles and the ever-changing landscape of interior heroism. Whether dealing with a family’s economic turbulence, the scarring effects of teenage love, or creating a new family order, Moore revisits, remasters, and repackages a twenty-five year family odyssey with guts, honesty, and love.
ADVANCE PRAISE FOR SAVAGE 1986-2011
“This is Running Backwards with Scissors in Leaside. Nathaniel G. Moore’s emotional atomic drops and body slams in Savage (1986-2011) put the nuke in nuclear family. Moore writes in Technicolor™ — he’s a poet of fractured reality, minstrel of meltdown, clown prince of sad suburban absurdity.” –Zsuzsi Gartner, author of Better Living Through Plastic Explosives
“Moore does something quite large here. He builds that cardboard box in your basement. The one filled with things you’ve forgotten, or tried to. You don’t want to open it but once you do you find it quite impossible to close or to forget. Much like the too tight, just right words you’ll find in Savage 1986-2011, reflecting a world which now cannot be unbuilt. This is familiar country visited in a brand new way. Open the box.” –Michael Blouin, author of the award-winning Chase and Haven
“Author Nathaniel G. Moore presents an inter-generational family saga so remote from the tropes overworked by fellow Canadian authors that one hesitates to even label it a ‘novel’ – a word, for me, poisoned by too many visits to the cow barn (and the silent, fraught-with-baking-eulogies kitchen table).” –RM Vaughan, author of Spells
“Like one of those albums you can’t stop playing, Savage is immediately catchy, thrilling and electric with an honest beauty and wild energy. Nathaniel Moore brings us on a journey into a hidden world of secret lovers, cool sisters, morgues, wrestlers and exorcisms that shimmers and ignites behind the facades of ordinary suburbia. This book is a great read, but it’s also an insightful, moving look at a family and society on the verge of collapse.” –Rebecca Godfrey, author of The Torn Skirt
REVIEWERS ON SAVAGE “…cringe-inducingly honest and uncommonly brave … Savage succeeds best as a showcase for Moore’s convulsively unbridled prose acrobatics. Like a punch-drunk anti-Hemingway, he tosses around verbiage like Pollock flung paint: promiscuously, recklessly. There’s little joy in what he describes, but much joy — and improbable gobs of humour — in the describing.” –Broken Pencil

hello there!! i’ve been searching for posts about how dean’s “i need you” in goodbye stranger feels more significant (i guess is the word?) than the original “i love you” and i was wondering what your thoughts on it were :)
I think a poet might be able to answer your ask better, so I invite my dashfam to point me to good linguistic posts.
///
As for me, I'm not sure I actually consider one line more meaningful than the other, and I'm not convinced Cas would have understood "I love you" at this point in his life (mentally wounded, brainwashed, thrown around by Heaven) any better than an "I need you."
I think it's highly likely that Cas wasn't actually lying when he said he didn't know what broke the connection in the crypt. That perhaps he couldn't parse his own feelings, especially with his then-fresh mental wounds. (I have this frankly incoherent rambling about how the inability to translate the angel tablet in season 8 is in parallel to how Cas can't read his own emotions/heart. I'll rewrite it to make it make more sense... someday.)
On the other hand, unlike Cas, I think Dean's I love you / I need you line does imply that Dean has worked through his own turbulent confusion with "why Cas feels different than everyone else." We see the line of questioning introduced in The Born-Again Identity, with Dean pondering aloud why he can't shake this and insisting that "of course (the reason) matters!" Dean realized back then that Cas was different. It was charged with... something.
Then, we see such jilted behavior from Dean in the episodes after this... both with Naomi's "I only wish he felt the same way," and Dean's silent treatment towards Cas in the bunker. It seems to me that Dean knows his own heart and is frustrated trying to "read" Cas's intentions, especially with how Heaven keeps wounding Cas over and over, rendering Cas psychologically unable to find his own footing (which is why Cas flees; all that brainwashing is too topsy-turvey for him to get his own bearings and directions sorted out).
///
But I think what interests me most about this season with regards to "I need you," is in the continued motif of Dean's outstretched hand.
We first see Dean's outstretched hand introduced in Purgatory, and it is THE through-line for much of the season. Even the scenes and relationships that aren't about Cas... are about Cas. When Cas throws Dean's hand away, Dean is floored—wounded to the point of rewriting his own memory. After he learns the truth, he's left wondering if he's misunderstood everything that was growing between him and Cas.
But Dean's "I need you / I love you" speaks to his consistently reaching out to Cas anyway, despite all the odds and despite Cas's numerous rejections. Dean just keeps reaching for Cas. He can't help it! (Dean is holding out hope that they do want each other, once the interference and obstacles are removed, that maybe they'll see that in each other... if they just get the chance.)
The motif of hands is so fascinating in season 8, because it's echoed in other relationships, too. For example, when Sam loses faith in himself, he injures his own hand, which Dean bandages in an echo of Church as "the small family supporting each other," against a gorgeous background of the Church as "the corporate megapower," with the angels falling. (It's a beautiful contrast of the different human and angel families.)
There's also how Cas cuts off the hand of (romantic) love, The Cupid, and how the Cupid willingly lets it happen. She extends her hand and lets Cas cut if off, the same way Dean was extending his hand to Cas in the crypt, thinking "I love you. I forgive you," and saying "I need you. We're family."
///Note: It's also like Theee Mixtape: (Love) is a gift. You keep those.
Reaching out is about love, acceptance, and connection. While Dean is doing all this reaching, Cas spends the season being psychologically wounded and threatened by Heaven, running for safety, and then--cutting out hearts and cutting off hands.
///
Yes, so when I look at the Crypt scene, and I see Cas twist and break Dean's arms and Dean is still REACHING... that is what fascinates me the most.
In this season, Dean is trying to help Cas at his own expense, even though Dean wants them to be together, he's helping Cas "fix Heaven," even though Heaven is going to take Cas away from Dean.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
//
Tumblr media
^ Here they sit, no longer in the kitchen-of-intimacy but in the bar-of-friendship, lamenting their inability to be in a romantic relationship together.
Dean knows he's in love with Cas at this point, I think, and while he suspected Cas had feelings for him, Dean withdraws, trying to respect Cas's space and support him in his chosen path of permanent, painful separation. (Dean knows how it is, of course, to support your family at the expense of your own personal happiness.)
Little does Dean know, that Cas's main motivation for fixing Heaven is to protect his human family. Metatron echoes it, and in The Great Escapist Naomi underlines to Cas that Heaven would not hesitate hurt his human loved ones.
METATRON: At the very least, it would st – [dog barking in distance, another warning] It would stop the fighting up there from spilling out down here, which will happen. It always does.
Tumblr media
(In her pursuit of Cas, Naomi destroys the humans in the family diner in The Great Escapist.)
///
But by the time Cas is actually ready to take Dean's hand, Gadreel engineers a reversal of the outstretched hand, kicking Cas out of the bunker, in a parallel to Dean from season 8, Cas is the one left thinking that he's misunderstood everything.
This is underlined by his soliloquy to the baby. In an episode where it's shown that "medic angels" react to emotional pain as readily as physical, we're left to wonder: is this how angels were trained to deaden their emotions in the first place?
No wonder they might not recognize what they're feeling. No wonder Cas has struggled to connect to his own emotions whether he's human or angel. Maybe it takes "becoming closer to human" for angels to connect with that deadened part of their hearts/minds.
CASTIEL (to the baby): Nobody told you. Nobody explained. You're just … shoved out kicking and screaming into this human life, without any idea why any of it feels the way it feels, or why this confusion, which feels like it's … a hair's breadth (The baby stops crying.) from terror or pain. You know, just when you think you do understand, it'll turn out you're wrong. You didn't understand anything at all. Guess that's just how it is when you're new at this. You know, it wasn't that long ago when all I'd need to do to ease your pain was touch you.
I think it's so fascinating that Dean and Cas are framed as (romantically) reaching for each other over and over,. Not to mention, with Dean wearing "the handprint" on his shoulder, because Dean's a character with his heart obviously on his sleeve... if you dare to REALLY look at him anyway (as Dean invited Mary to do, to see him).
In Dean and Cas's fights, they tend to break each others' arms/hands, and yet... they continue to reach for each other... in parallel.
x - x - x - x - x - x - x
///
ADDITION: That family needs each other is a theme that is used over and over in this series. We are shown loss and love in almost every form (familial, friendship, etc. Ex: The Chuck and Amara forgiveness speech.)
But it's the motifs around the Dean-Cas one in particular that lends an intensely romantic context that imho sets it apart from the other instances.

This is horrifying.
And a sad reminder that major news broadcasters, especially the BBC, are NOT impartial and they do present a biased view.
The BBC in particular has become increasingly right-wing in recent years.
But creating made up stories to give a flimsy excuse for a military megapower to bomb a hospital! Truly a new low.
This is not journalism. This is aiding a right-wing government commit genocide.
This is unforgivable.
Bombing a hospital is a war crime.
Even Tumblr is prompting me with 'hamas builds secret tunnels under hospital' tag for posts, @staff This is spreading misinformation and the dehumanisation of Palestinians; if everyone is a terrorist then no one is a victim, that is the goal. To dehumanise and ethnically cleanse one entire group of people.
That is a genocide.
We must call for a ceasefire and free Palestine.

Overlord shit i need to ramble about
Overlord is a reaction
Literally, the FSM fucked around, and he found out when the Overlord showed up.
The Overlord, as far as we can tell, does not have a name, lending to the fact that he is not strictly speaking, a person, he is a stopgap measure, to deal with the Golden Master prophecy, that was never intended to exist, but the sheer fucking aura the FSM had was too much and the Balance went 'oh nonono, you dont get to be a megapowerful godbeing with no opposition'
The Overlord is nobody, he is just the overlord. Giving him a name would make him something, and he thrives in being nothing. the wonders of void.
Also
Void, represses personality. Overlord (to start with) has no personality, he is a backdrop of evil, the greatest of all evils. When he develops a personality in Book 4, (or at least a will to live) he gets defeated, and it somewhat sticks for a bit. Then in Crystalized, he invokes the [REDACTED] Element, and he is going to lose because the good guys always win.
And i think the reason he is going to lose is because he changed. he as never meant to be anything more than a counterweight for the FSMs awesomeness, (and later lloyds), he wasn't meant to change and grow because he wasnt alive or ever really intended to be a thing. But he did change, he wanted to live, he developed a shadow of a personaility, he becomes more... Personlike.
This would completely contradict the purpose of his existence and the essence of Void.
(one could also suggest that the FSM, having always been the way he is, contradicted his element and essence, in that he never changed and was always the same wise soul, but what do i know?)
this is only my interpretation of the overlord so far with the breadcrumbs we've been bestowed ofc so it could be completely off base
Overlord is a reaction. Literally, the FSM fucked around, and he found out when the Overlord showed up. <- a cosmic reaction from the universe itself, but absolutely correct
he is a stopgap measure, to deal with the Golden Master prophecy, that was never intended to exist, but the sheer fucking aura the FSM had was too much and the Balance went 'oh nonono, you dont get to be a megapowerful godbeing with no opposition' <- Correct again!
The Overlord is nobody, he is just the overlord. Giving him a name would make him something, and he thrives in being nothing. the wonders of void. <- similar but inverse to how giving the FSM a name would ground him; bring him back down to earth as a person; rather than the large than life figure he most certainly was—!
Void, represses personality. Overlord (to start with) has no personality, he is a backdrop of evil, the greatest of all evils. When he develops a personality in Book 4, (or at least a will to live) he gets defeated, and it somewhat sticks for a bit. Then in Crystalized, he invokes the [REDACTED] Element <- CORRECT
-and he is going to lose because the good guys always win. <- ...well, it would be nice if it were that simple :V
And i think the reason he is going to lose is because he changed. he as never meant to be anything more than a counterweight for the FSMs awesomeness, (and later lloyds), he wasn't meant to change and grow because he wasnt alive or ever really intended to be a thing. But he did change, he wanted to live, he developed a shadow of a personaility, he becomes more… Personlike. <- won't confirm or deny anything here, but I do very much adore your train of thought!
This would completely contradict the purpose of his existence and the essence of Void. <- under this train of though though, very much correct!
(one could also suggest that the FSM, having always been the way he is, contradicted his element and essence, in that he never changed and was always the same wise soul, but what do i know?) <- or maybe that where the Overlord started to change, the FSM stopped changing, believing he and his world reached a point where he wished the preserve it, and the universe punished him for the hubris with the Overlord. Or something. *shrug*
this is only my interpretation of the overlord so far with the breadcrumbs we've been bestowed ofc so it could be completely off base <- I do feel like you've made a whole cookie out the crumb regardless jhgfdghfd

OOOOORGH also curious about iolanthe’s job and how all that works/looks
okay so Iolanthe doesn't work for a living she's got that generational wealth. she does sell some jewellery tho.
but why is Io making jewellery? well you know about magic jewellery making which is an idea basically invented by Nileao (Io's megapowerful ancestor). and Io wasn't into this until she met Selma at magic tuition. Selma was super interested in Nileao and had made her own magic necklace herself that had amplified her power. Selma/Iolanthe were friends (kinda) and so Iolanthe decided to try her hand at making her own magic jewellery to try amplify her own power.
so Io has her little workshop bought using generational wealth in the chain islands bit of the capital city. now you might be thinking isabel. how is she working metal if she doesn't live in the deep ocean where all industry happens?? and the answer is inchresting..
so everyone else thinks she's really powerful right because she must be. she's the last remaining descendant of Nileao. and so they think she's using magic to work the metal/shells/glass etc she needs to make the jewellery. and she kind of is?? I guess?? she's just powerful enough to slightly shift the metal in a similar way to how Isther shifted the metal of her restraints heehee. also she's physically warping/cutting the metal with her handss. I need to do a redesign to make Io (and Melyde) kinda buff. heeheeheee.
anyway she makes lots of jewellery trying to find something to amplify her power but it doesn't work bc selfishness entitlement etc. then the group start finding Nileao's og jewellery and she fucking loses it trying to get them.
after a couple monster attacks she starts helping to make weapons instead :)

my most ideal demyx reveal is that he is literally just some guy. like luxu or the mom or xehanort or whoever the fuck just grabbed the wrong guy for the organization. demyx was just in the wrong place at the wrong time and got mistaken for some megapowerful keyguy or something and now normal street musician demyx is just kicking it with anime villains

presumably youve watched arcane, judging by those tags lmfao. you wanna uh 👀👉👈✨ you wanna share those jinx&silco feelings or what
YESSSS okay people have been trying to get me to watch arcane for years and, as it always is with these things, something random (my friend @northernfireart's super cool art) cracked me but yeah. sorry this won't be coherent it's 10pm i just got out of rehearsals and it is cold as shit out here right now
the first time i watched s1 (cause yes i've rewatched almost all of s1 now and yes i started it on saturday 😭) i hated silco for very good reason, and then i didn't notice it but i'd started warming up to him? i mean father daughter relationships in media will always get me so it's probably also partly that but i became enamoured with him and jinx's relationship
like he is the worst man in the world and also he is genuinely trying to be a good father to his moody teen. he literally evil and he loves his daughter and she loves him and she's also doing awful things and none of these facts negate each other. and the fact that her killing silco is the catalyst to her fully accepting jinx is so interesting, too, cause she says that "silco didn't make jinx, [vi] did" and then once she's killed silco she loses that loving human relationship she had and can fully become jinx (at least for a little while)
also the fact that even when she's flipped side again and is back with vi & co, jinx still clearly loves him. she loves silco because he was an evil man but to her he was a father when she really needed someone to protect and take care of her and i just love how complicated it is. the "good" route would be jinx completely abandoning her love for silco as her father because of everything he did and the side she ended up fighting on, but she doesn't because it's not that easy. when jinx was just a little girl she needed someone and he was there for her and he raised her; she didn't have the logic of "he's evil he's doing bad things to the undercity", she had the logic of "this is a man who is taking care of me" and i just. and then she kills him and she's so upset because that's her dad and that's what really sends her over the edge and GOD.
also i thought the scene where silco has to ask for advice with dealing with his daughter really funny cause he's this megapowerful crime lord and he's struggling to be a single dad 😭

Tumblr media
(Kouzelná školka? more like Kouzelné rozvodové stání)
Tumblr media
🩺 and that's what you missed on Nemocnice na kraji města, epizoda 5/20 🦵

The first megapowers was because of 2 reasons. 1
The universe as itself is originally across multiple dimensions eatch pantheon using a face of the still born gia as a fertile breeding ground for there own creations. Starting with dinosaurs left to there own devices eatch made there own and enjoyed it having there own climates that fit them best then the first universal constant happend being a meteor hitting the earth in the same place across all dimensions this caused a agressive argument and investigation among the gods to see who sent it and by the time that it was found to be a natural occurrence humans andcestors had spawned across all of the dimensions. The demiurge moved 2 she liked to the moon and created a garden to try and grow new family. The rest of the gods saw the use theses humans had to and decided to create myths about how they created humans and over the centurys the treatment if the humans got so bad that the gift of fier by Prometheus and this unfair punishment pushed the devil over the edge and she merged everything into 1 reality this. Again almost caused war and after 200 years they just decided to take back there humans and simply make outher worlds inhabitable. Only to find then iriversibly mixed

Episode 102: World War 3 1995
29 years ago the third world war happened to crickets! A tremendous undercard is ruined by a utter mess of a main event: The 60 man world war 3 battle royal. We talk all about that and why this show was a low point for the megapowers and a high point for Flair and Stiiiiiing!
Check out this episode!
