ツアー直前おはジャズは「Mel Lewis / 6」'57

Modeレーベルのこの肖像画シリーズは、音質がイマイチだったり、良くてもモノラルなんですが、これは85年にリイシューされた様で、音質も良く何故かステレオです。なんちゃってじゃないステレオなので、当時から楽器毎にマイク立てて、バラで録ってたんですね。

いつもの西海岸特有のヘッドアレンジがしっかりなされたものばかりですが、ソロもしっかりと聴けます。ブルースで見せるペイチのコードソロは斬新です。

3管編成で、シェルダンを始めいつも安定した演奏を聴かせてくれるメンバー。アンサンブルも皆さん達者なのでバッチリですが、ソロに関してはマリアーノとホルマンが若干調子悪そう(二人ともセカンド楽器のテナーやバリを吹いてるせいも有るけど)。YouTubeで聴いてた時からそこが気になってたのですが、まぁ、安かったし、欲しいアルバムではあったので買いました。

メルのリーダー作ではありますが、ドラムを必要以上にフィーチャーせず、キメをバッチリ聴かせるとこ、さすが将来のビッグバンドのボスって感じがします。
