not affiliated with any fandom, open to interacting with most and can adapt to any aus/verses. this is a writing blog for the character steven crain from netflix's the haunting of hill house, inspired by the character dr. montague from the 1959 gothic horror novel by shirley jackson.

i will be incorporating my own original and personal interpretation of the character as well as expanding on what's already been written. i plan to delve deeper and further develop steve's character. headcanons will be used. i will also be gathering various source materials for inspiration to be used in my portrayal.

canon-compliant. follows the series with a few minor tweaks. but i'll be heavily focusing on him being a paranormal investigator and horror writer outside of the events of the show unless discussed beforehand or interacting with other hill house muses.

depictions of horror, the supernatural, death and grief will be present. i won't be writing with minors. this blog is 18+ only. triggering content will always be tagged appropriately.

i'm open to discussing pre-established relationships, and open to most dynamics such as platonic, rivals, romantic, etc. chemistry is always required.

TWO STORIES

i try not to think too hard about this one because of the guilt 😂 it’s a fandom trumps hate fill, which means that i absolutely WILL write it. someday. the idea is that it’s fake married, but twice over: mi6 assigns a gorgeous wunderkind to provide technical support as bond infiltrates an arms dealer or somesuch, and then years later, after skyfall, bond and the wunderkind (now q) have to go undercover as a married couple again at a couples resort that is a front for some nefarious business.

“Come in, 007,” Tanner crackled through his earpiece. “Tell her I don’t need micromanaging,” he said bluntly. “Well, you’re getting it regardless,” M’s voice cut in past Tanner’s protestations, as he knew she would. “Initial satellite scans have informed us that Mr. Friedrich’s security systems are far more advanced than we originally anticipated. The reason there are so few guards is that everything is automated—and on a closed system, so we can’t help you from here.” “Shall I just blow a hole in the wall, then?” Bond asked dryly. “Control yourself, Bond. We’ve detailed a specialist to assist you with the technical portions of the job. Try not to get him killed.” “That was once, and he was an FSB plant.” “Regardless,” M said unsympathetically. “Check your phone for the details. We’ll likely lose you once you’re inside the building, which is what the technical assistance is for. And I don’t need to remind you—the German government does not know we’re running this operation, and we’d like to keep it that way.” Tanner muttered something uncomplimentary-sounding from far enough away that the microphone couldn’t pick it up. “Quite,” M said crisply, obviously not caring either whether Bond had heard or hadn’t, and clicked off as abruptly as she’d come on. Bond rolled his eyes and glanced at his phone, taking in the baby-faced features of a tech even greener-looking than the teenager the CIA had running SciOps. Lovely. At least they’d be close enough to speak in person instead of over comms; if he had to tell one more idiot not to touch their ear when speaking into an earpiece he might turn actively homicidal instead of his usual passive lethality.

IT-HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE

last year i watched it part 2 and went insane when i realized bill denbrough & steven crain are the same character. 😔 still salty that all the richie/eddie fic means i couldn’t prompt this for yuletide last year. anyway, this is a short-ish relationship study of bill & steven encountering each other in the LA writer’s circuit, sort-of-accidentally falling in love, & discovering that actually each of the horrors they’ve written about are real, and that maybe they’re attracted to the darkness and those who write it.

Steven has heard of Bill Denbrough, of course. Blurbs with words like “spine-chilling,” blockbusting movies… crappy endings. He’s one of the bigger horror writers in the field, and based in LA, too, but the two of them have to go to Vegas to meet. They’re at CreeperCon, the biggest horror convention in the Western US, and someone has the bright idea of getting Steven to fill in when Joe Hill drops out of the headline panel. Steven’s a big enough name for it, to be sure, but he’s the only nonfiction writer on a panel ostensibly about horror inspiration. He thinks everyone in the audience knows how he gets his inspiration. They shake hands before the panel. Denbrough is distracted, glancing out at the crowd. Searching for someone, maybe, Steven thinks. He knows that ever since… ever since Hill House, he finds himself looking for Nell at the oddest times. Denbrough has a firm handshake, bordering on too-tight, but his hand is cool and dry and Steven has had worse meetings. They take their seats, plush and yet somehow terribly unergonomic red velvet chairs all in a line behind a long table. Ruth Ware is moderating; Steven makes a mental note to tell her how much he loved her latest novel. (He hasn’t read it. He’s not much of a horror fan.) The panel goes well. Steven talks a little about interviewing technique. Denbrough is wry and self-deprecating, in spite of the way his latest film grossed $600 million. Steven doesn’t see Nell. Everything is fine.

ask meme: before the beginning!

BEFORE THE BEGINNING — three sentences (or more) about something that happened before the plot of my current project

Ohhhhh this is interesting I’m not gonna write it in fic format I’m just gonna tell u. It’s kinda hard to discern what technically counts as before the beginning in this fic bc it skips between the present and flashbacks of the Losers’ past, but I’ll just go w something that happens in the in-between that isn’t covered.

Basically this is a Hill House AU and Bill is obviously the Steven Crain analog, right?I mean, Steven’s name is an obvious reference to King himself, and they’re both horror writers, both characters have problems w their marriage, both King and Crain are criticized for taking the pain of a real life event and capitalizing off it for cheap horror thrills and profit. In Hill House, Steven writes a book abt their childhood and Shirley is pissed about it—for good reason.

Anyway what I’m saying is before the fic starts Bill’s most popular book is basically just IT, he wrote their entire story in IT and bc I’m mean and like to create drama one or more of the Losers gets pissed about their portrayal and how he capitalized off their greatest fears to make money. Besides pissed, they’re just mortified—I mean their life is spelled out, all their irrational childhood fears, all their baggage, their home life, and it’s a New York Times best seller!

“But wait!” you say—how is it fair to hold it against Bill if he doesn’t remember writing the book? And you are right! It’s not entirely fair, absolutely. He doesn’t remember their childhood, so it’s not his fault! Or is it?

To add another layer of “dun-dun-dunnnnnnn” to this, Bill actually does have to take some accountability for his actions bc before he left Derry he wrote down a bunch of unfinished notes based on their altercation w IT that he was planning to use someday to maybe write a story—possibly with permission, at least he thought so at the time. However, when he moves away and gets amnesia, he finds this notebook again and it basically has this story in it full formed, right??? I mean how can he NOT use it? The idea comes so easily to him, as do the characters, like he’s recalling a distant memory—it’s meant to be.

It’s honestly a whole mess, if Bill has written the story completely as a fluke it would be one thing, whoever is mad would probably have no choice but to forgive him. But it’s more the notebook that’s the damning thing because it’s less that he wrote the book—it’s more than he’d been planning on writing the book, he’d always been planning to write the book the whole time, even when he knew what it would cost. That’s what hurts. Not to mention Bill was the one dragging them to Neibolt in the first place, so it felt a little bit like he got them into the mess and then when he moved away, got wildly successful and hung the others out to dry profiting off their lives.

Anyway, this is all very mean-spirited, and I am giving Bill a hard time bc I love drama. Would Bill ever do something like this?? I dunno! Like I said, it’s a culmination of a lot of unfortunate factors—if he’d still kept his memories he probably would’ve asked permission or offered to share profits, but sadly things worked out the way they did. And I don’t like when the Losers fight but I rly want to honor the plot of Hill House! I don’t think the severity of Steven’s betrayal is the same as Bill’s in the AU (he has no idea it’s a betrayal in the first place) but I think there’s something compelling to the idea!

Plus he’s the leader. And it’s the Losers. They can’t stay mad at each other forever. U know they’re going to forgive him. I won’t say who it is yet but feel free to guess

i’m throwing matt in again. STEVEN CRAIN and MATT HOLT. matt can handle a certain amount of realism / grounding, but i don’t think their coping mechanisms would mesh well at all, and matt needs more of a dreamer in his corner, just like steve needs somebody who will just hold onto him while he clings to the ground desperately.

some people just think they’re clever. she’s about three aren’t you one of the kids from that book’s away from putting her fist through a wall and helping herself to a quart of vodka. because people think they’re smart, when they make these little connections -- they think they’ve taken two unrelated dots and joined them with the revelation of the fucking century.

          but theo’s had time to be angry about the book. she’s had time to read the strained half-truths that steve’s laid out on stock paper that makes it look like holy fucking scripture, and she’s had time to make it find a home in her waste paper bin. shirl’s just as mad. luke’s -- well, luke’s too fucking high all the time to even give a shit about it, and neII... neII’s just neII. she has enough demons to fight without having to fold over the page every time he mentions the bent-neck Iady.

she’s a fucking doctor. she has a phD. she uses every single trick she has to try and help kids like her from letting something in their past shape their entire future. (ironic, again. her past settles a foundation for the way she hops from case to case and girl to girl, but she’s here so others don’t make those kinds of mistakes. it’s a long-term thing, not a quick fix.) but theo puts so much effort and time and rests on the fact that she can do better. so why does her life come down to the haunting of hiII house by steven fucking crain?
