The point is: MI2 is so ooc when it comes to Ethan, women and sex
Ethan doesn’t has sex with random women. In mi1 Ethan is shy mess around his bosses wife. In mi3 he has sex ONCE with his wife, during their wedding night and it is cut really short. After that he has one kiss, in three movie (not counting the white widow kissing him without consent)
I DO understand why they went that road in mi2. After the shy mess Ethan was in MI1 they wanted to show him being more like James Bond, a man, all grown up, sure about his sexuality, lucky with the ladies
But that’s not Ethan. Ethan is a shy mess around women and that’s okay. It’s okay to have An action hero who is a shy mess around women.
And I am so lucky MCQ realized that and gave us him and Ilsa

So I've always loved the rock climbing scene (I've done just enough bouldering to be both horrified and wildly envious). But if I'm going to treat this film as one that makes intentional choices (and I am going to because it's more fun), it's an interesting decision.
He's introduced that way because it's cool, obviously, and strong and impressive and so on and so forth. All of that has it's due weight in a spy/action film. It also:
Is solitary
Establishes that Ethan is running from the IMF, which besides being notable in itself re-frames the climb not as a hijink he's been forced into, but as something he's doing voluntarily.
Plants the worry that he's treating his life as disposable—freeclimbing without a rope is an unnecessary risk, and his near-fall, besides injecting excitement into the scene, shunts away the possibility that he's just So Good that there's no risk in it.
Poses the question of why he would spend his free time putting himself in danger. The music suggests he's enjoying it—is he an adrenaline junky? So inured to fear and pain that he has to push that far to feel anything, even just for a good time? I'll circle back to this one later.
All of which stands in marked contrast to his introduction in MI1, where he's in the middle of a mission, invigorated and fulfilled by his work, alongside teammates who seem more like family. MI1 Ethan clearly loves a challenge, but there's no reason to assume he would be reckless without cause.
So while out of the gate MI2 Ethan is flashy and impressive, there is immediate reason to suspect that, unlike in your average Bond film, this isn't a character reset. MI2 may stand on its own, disconnected from MI1 in style and tone and plot, eschewing all references. But within Ethan himself the scars and the losses he bore are carried forward.

We are back with our next commentary double feature. This time, it's Mission Impossible 2 and Mission Impossible: Fallout, the worst and best of the franchise.
Which is which? Well, we inadvertently wound up making the worst commentary of all time because this movie is so bad we struggled HARD to get through it.
"Oh, we gotta stop talking about better movies."
Start your copy of the movie at 5:10 to sync up!
Expect a lot of confusion and off-topic talking and also:
Arc's anxiety dream about McQ and custom keyboards
Is the IMF evil? i think the IMF is actually evil guys
What the fuck is TC's grip strength like for real
Did they forget to buy Thandie Newton any bras?
Punct goads Arc into listing all the Metal Gear games
That gun ABSOLUTELY would NOT have been able to fire, are you JOKING
How the hell did they make a motorcycle chase boring
Are the IMF the baddies, this isn't a bit, are they evil
Maybe the plot would have been easier to follow if we actually listened to the script but then we'd be listening to this terrible script, so
This one is dire, but we follow it up with
youtube
Finally, some good fucking food. Start your movie at 4:12 to sync up!
In this commentary, Arc & Punct discuss:
A lot of Behind the Scenes facts, including why the arc de triomphe motorcycle stunt may be the scariest stunt in MI
Ethan And Gender, Round 32
Two asexuals claim Ethan Hunt bc we know our own okay
How knowing the movie is intended to be seen as a spiraling nightmare recontextualizes it for the better
NO random Metal Gear facts, PROMISE
Arc's favorite moment in the entire MI franchise (and also her favorite outfits)
THAT. GODDAMN. RUNNING. SHOT.
thanks McQ for being a good writer like for real for real. we stan.

Second movie: finished! It was pretty good, the scene where Ethan infiltrates in the Biocyte building is nothing short of iconic, that and the motorcycle one. Billy and Luther were underrated mvps. Nyah doesn't have much to her character, unfortunately :( but she was brave to use the chimera the way she did, ngl
It's only 11 pm, I could watch the third movie... But I'm just a little bit tired. I'll watch it tomorrow, can't wait! Two minutes of Benji + minimum of two hours of Tom Cruise doing cool stuff + I really hope they do something with Nyah she's a thief she's cool there's surely other ways she can contribute to the plot!
