The Notwist - Pick Up the Phone (from Neon Golden) Hitting up some early aughts bands I love today. I was especially enamored with The Notwist’s Neon Golden in 2002. Such a great album! “Pilot” and “One With the Freaks” also great tracks. I remember listening to it over and over that year (and one of the Acher brother’s other band Lali Puna). German indie rock at its finest. They’re still touring and releasing work (last album was 2016). Need to catch up with them.

the one and only daughter of Lewis && Eleanor Cooper ( Lewis is the brother of Ash Cooper, Crimon’s father). The two of them go married at an early and get went off into a small religious town. sees their families on occasion but not often enough. 

once born, kennedy was seen as a gift from the dude upstairs, mainly because they had trouble getting pregnant to begin with.

in turn grew up adored yet also with high expectations set ; they’d practically planned out her whole life from her first cry.

and while kennedy loved the idea of her town growing up, everyone knew each other, got along, were all friends, it still  felt right with her. she was always too curious and questioning, doubtful of the very beliefs others held so easily

because of her intellect and doubts she was put down a lot by her parents and everyone around her int attempts at squashing out that very intellect and curiosity

it got to the point where she was like ... lol nah. she isn’t one to stand down and was tired of having everything be out of her control

so she started acting out in private, lying and finding her own self online as well as places she could sneak off to

found out about caming ( though still hiding her actual identity ) and was like wahhh ?? money and in control of something she never could’ve been before ?? bLESS tF up

got rather popular and saved up money, cause there was no way she was going to the religious uni in town lik her parents wished

working her ass off in class as well as track, she got into dupont scholarship, using what she makes off caming to continue to pay for it. ( without it tho she’s be screwed af )

in a nutshell kennedy kinda plays up on the whole religious sweet girl thing but doesn’t take anyone’s shit. if you’d seen the society think helena wu kinda vibes in a sense ?? kindhearted, selfless, strong, but definitely controlling && greedy -- never wanting to lose that feeling again. since she feels like a lot of her childhood was taken away she just wants to live her best life y’know ?? you know. x)

━  the marquez family is known to have a bit of a controversial reputation, mostly surrounding how they made their fortune. what started out as a small delivery company decades ago has now expanded to a global empire of sorts. officially, marquez enterprises is a shipping company that controls the major ports in spain, and owns several businesses throughout europe and latin america.

━  but off the books? well, let’s just say there may be rumours that they’re involved in some shady business cough drug cartel? cough and have quite a few shady interesting contacts from all around the world, from politicians to some less than savoury people. regardless, it’s common knowledge that the marquezes are filthy dirty rich, enjoy living extravagantly and lavishly, and are practically seen as spanish royalty in the social scene.

━  arguably the marquez with the most well-known and controversial reputation is cristian - one of the heirs to the marquez fortune, fuckboy extraordinaire with an impressively long list of ex lovers, and all around entitled trust fund brat. he was always expected to be the picture perfect son, to steal the biggest stake in marquez entreprises from his cousin sabina’s family, and to carry on the family legacy. but parents never quite get exactly what they hoped for from their children, do they?

━  eventually, his parents learned that hiring a good PR team and shipping their off to boarding school was easier than forcing him to behave. if there’s one thing you should know about cristian is that he will never do anything if he feels forced into it. still, he did the bare minimum just to keep his parents off his back. he got good grades (whether it was based on his own merits was a completely different story), showed up to important events (granted he was always drunk and late), smiled for photo ops (no complaints there because everyone had to admit he looked good), and charmed the pants off of interviewers and his admirers (quite literally). ━  cristian puts out this very lazy, devil-may-care image of himself, who does not give two shits about anyone other than himself. you could call him a selfish asshole and he'd probably agree with you. most see him as this impulsive, directionless loose cannon, when in fact he actually does think things through and is a lot smarter than people give him credit for. but he just believes that expectations lead to disappointment, so it’s better to not have anyone expect anything of you. he is, however, not so smart when it comes to his love life and is notoriously bad at juggling his booty calls. as in, getting all their names mixed up, and running into a booty call number five, who he’d ghosted, when he was with booty call number eight.

━  is anyone even surprised that cristian was best friends with michael valmont? they were like two peas in a pod, two of the same kind. birds of a feather flocked together after all, don’t they? unlike so many people in michael’s life, cristian never cared all that much about what a dick the guy really was. because, well, he himself was just as big of a dick, if not bigger (he would argue that his is definitely bigger eiogsgjlkg - HE IS TRASH!!!). he often found amusement in michael’s petty antics, but never played a part in them, mostly because it required too much effort on his part. he was always more of the ‘lounging back with scotch on the rocks while he watched michael terrorizing those at the bottom of the pyramid’ type. as long as he wasn’t on the receiving end of this, he couldn’t care less. 

━  except one day, he was. michael had stayed with cristian in spain during spring break. it seemed like since that trip, everything started to go downhill. a couple of blackout idiots, a party gone wrong and too many lines of coke later, they found themselves hurrying back to one of the marquez’s properties, while scrambling to find an alibi. they swore they’d never tell another soul about what happened that night, but michael being michael eventually turned on him. no matter how laid-back and carefree he always came off, cristian was a marquez after all, and the marquezes never let anyone shove them under the bus. like hell he was going to go down for something that michael had an equal part in, best friend or not. two can only keep a secret if one of them is dead - that’s how the saying goes, sí?

━  sabina is her parents’ daughter in every way possible. they taught her everything legal and illegal that she needed to know in order to be successful in life. but some things even they couldn’t quite explain themselves. like when three-year-old sabina stole all the crayons in daycare to force other kids to buy them back with their snacks. from a young age, she quickly learned that tricking people into giving her what she wanted out of their own dumb free will was so much more satisfying than stealing it from under their noses. she may be named after a saint, but anyone will tell you she is anything but.

━  a hustler with an alpha bitch mentality, she’s always outsmarting people and outsmarting the system to get things to work in her favour. and when that didn’t work, no one could ever say no to a big fat wad of cash. because sabina marquez never loses. she doesn’t just play the game, she owns it, makes the rules and wins. every. damn. time. sabina strongly believes that playing by the rules was for suckers and if you weren’t the best, then you were nothing at all. and sometimes being the best required playing dirty. if she has to ruin someone else’s life to get her way, then she will gladly pour a jug of gasoline, light a match and enjoy watching it go up in flames. hell, sometimes she’ll do that just for the fun of it anyways. and if that’s what she does for her own enjoyment, then you do not wanna know what she does when she’s pissed off.

━  with that mentality, it’s no surprise that sabina easily became the top student of her program and student council president. though she may have lied and cheated her way to the top on several occasions, there’s no denying that she’s fucking brilliant. yes, she could have done it the right way, but where’s the fun in that? if anything, pulling off all the lying, cheating and scheming proved just how smart she really was. and maybe that’s why michael fell for her. 

━  sabina always thought she was too good for michael. in fact, too good for almost anyone at this school. the whole golden boy, mr. popular act was boring and cliche, and she saw right through it. and yet somehow, almost as if it’d happened overnight, michael had won her over and they were quickly known as du pont’s ‘it’ couple. everyone envied them and wanted to be them. they couldn’t be a more perfect couple and she was the perfect girlfriend - sweet, adoring, supportive. in fact, so perfect that no one ever knew that deep down, sabina had never hated anyone more in her life than michael fucking valmont. and she couldn’t be happier now that he’s dead.

the divorce upset him but he didn’t dwell on it too much ‘cause his father literally showered him with love and affection so he didn’t ever get a chance to miss his mom or brother. his father then moved on and remarried so now everyone’s just a happy RICH family.

he doesn’t really remember his brother since they parted at such a young age. never knew his mom. no one tried to meet up and do a family reunion so it’s a tale of two families living their own lives.

he’s majoring in pre med and is on track to become a doctor cause the idea of someone surviving because of HIM gives him satisfaction. 

not necessarily a loner but you sure in hell won’t see him showing up at random parties. he likes to keep to himself, especially after michael’s untimely death. nothing makes his skin crawl like petty drama so you best believe he’d stay away from ALL of that craziness. 

william’s generally nice unless you’re talking about stupid shit. then he’d speak his mind and trust -- he’s not afraid to do that.

At it's closest point near Fisherman's Wharf it is approximately 1 mile from land across the very choppy waters of San Francisco Bay. - The island is 1,675 feet (511 m) by 590 feet (180 m) and is 135 feet (41 m) at it's highest point during mean tide. Luis Moneda, do Nubank: “Do trabalho de um cientista de dados, a profissão do momento, 90% consiste em limpeza da base de dados” (Foto: Anna Carolina Negri) Por trás das startups mais valiosas do Brasil, há um grupo de investidores com muito dinheiro no bolso e pouco medo de errar. Reunidos em fundos de investimentos, eles são especializados em garimpar ideias que podem virar negócios bilionários, como Nubank, Movile, Stone, 99, PagSeguro e Gympass - empresas brasileiras que se tornaram unicórnios por ultrapassar a marca de US$ 1 bilhão em valor de mercado. Desde 2011, quando a onda do empreendedorismo digital começou a decolar no País, eles aportaram quase R$ 13 bilhões por aqui. Só no ano passado, os fundos - chamados de venture capital - investiram US$ 1,3 bilhão (R$ 5,1 bilhões): volume 51% superior ao de 2017, segundo dados da Associação Latino-americana de Private Equity e Venture Capital (Lavca, na sigla em inglês). O montante representou 65% de todos os investimentos feitos na América Latina.Os números devem continuar em alta este ano. Em meados de março, a gigante japonesa Softbank anunciou o lançamento de um megafundo de US$ 5 bilhões (R$ 19,8 bilhões) para investir em startups na região. A expectativa é de que parte dos recursos seja alocada em empresas brasileiras.Esse apetite faz parte de um movimento iniciado nos últimos anos por fundos como monashees, Kaszek, Redpoint eVenture, Valor Capital e 500 Startups. Na linha de frente desses fundos estão ex-executivos de grandes empresas, diplomatas e empreendedores que venderam seus negócios e são agora investidores. A lista inclui o fundador do Buscapé, Romero Rodrigues; os ex-Mercado Livre Hérnan Kazah e Nicolás Szekasy; o ex-embaixador dos Estados Unidos no Brasil Clifford Sobel; e o herdeiro da família que controla o grupo Ultra, Fabio Igel. Eles integram o time dos principais "caçadores" de unicórnios do País.A lógica de investimento deles é diferente da aplicada por outros fundos de mercado. Com maior apetite ao risco, investem quantias entre R$ 100 mil e R$ 300 milhões em várias empresas ao mesmo tempo. Eles sabem que a maior parte delas vai ficar pelo meio do caminho, mas aquelas que "vingarem" vão compensar os fracassos. A venda da 99 para a chinesa Didi, por exemplo, rendeu a investidores retorno 60 vezes o montante aplicado. O valor do negócio foi de quase US$ 1 bilhão. "Investir em startups é pensar no que pode dar certo. Quanto mais nova, mais você precisa focar no time e no sonho", afirma Anderson Thees, sócio do fundo Redpoint eVentures - que investe em startups como Viajanet, Gympass e Resultados Digitais. Segundo ele, a estratégia é bem diferente de investir numa empresa madura, na qual o foco está no negócio em si, no histórico e em como ela foi construída. "É futuro versus passado." Também não é fácil encontrar uma ideia capaz de virar um unicórnio. A sócia do fundo americano 500 Startups, Bedy Yang, conta que todo ano avalia 5 mil empresas no mundo para investir. A taxa de aceitação é de apenas 1%. O fundo tem 2 mil companhias no portfólio, sendo 10 unicórnios. No Brasil, já investiu em 40 startups e ainda não saiu de nenhuma.'Sonho de consumo'Num país onde o crédito é escasso e caro, esses investidores viraram a principal fonte de recursos para desenvolver negócios em estágio inicial. Mais que isso: são o "sonho de consumo" de quase todo empreendedor. Exemplo disso é o total de acordos fechados no ano passado. Pelos dados da Lavca, foram 259 negócios ante 113 em 2017 - avanço de quase 130%. "Mesmo com a crise econômica, a atividade desses fundos nunca foi tão intensa", afirma o presidente da Associação Brasileira de Private Equity & Venture Capital, Piero Paolo Minardi. Para ele, esse movimento está engatinhando no Brasil. "Está tudo por fazer. Portanto, essa indústria tem potencial de dobrar de tamanho em pouco tempo." Para Paulo Veras, fundador da 99, a sociedade não tem noção de como esse mercado está quente. No passado, diz ele, o País tinha bons projetos, mas não tinha dinheiro para tirar do papel. Hoje, a situação é outra: "O mercado nunca teve tanto dinheiro para startup". De olho em startups brasileiras desde 2008, o sócio da Valor Capital, Michael Niklas, diz que o mercado amadureceu muito no período. "Em 10 anos, tivemos um boom na banda larga e tudo ficou mais fácil, porque o Brasil ficou mais conectado."Fundos internacionaisQuase todo o dinheiro investido pelos fundos de venture capital nas startups brasileiras é captado no mercado internacional, com fundadores de empresas de tecnologia e outros fundos institucionais. Na monashees, uma das precursoras dessa indústria, sete fundos foram criados com recursos exclusivamente externos e apenas um deles tem um mix de investidor nacional e estrangeiro. Nesse último, a gestora captou US$ 150 milhões (R$ 594 milhões) entre famílias brasileiras e empreendedores, como Mike Krieger - fundador do Instagram e um dos brasileiros mais influentes no Vale do Silício. Criada em 2005 antes da explosão das startups no Brasil, a monashees investiu no primeiro unicórnio verde-amarelo: a 99. Também tem participação na colombiana Rappi, que entrou para o rol das empresas bilionárias. O primeiro investimento da gestora, fundada por Eric Acher (executivo com passagens pela MacKinsey e pelo fundo americano General Atlantic) e Fabio Igel (herdeiro da família que controla o grupo Ultra), foi numa empresa de educação montada pelos próprios sócios, já que na época não havia opção de startup para investir. De lá para cá, a gestora já aportou recursos em 88 empresas na América Latina. Atualmente, tem 60 companhias no seu portfólio, sendo 42 no Brasil. Dessas, algumas são candidatas a assumir o posto de novos unicórnios, como a Grow (fusão da brasileira Yellow com a mexicana Grin), Loggi (startup de entregas), Neon (banco digital) e Viva Real (imobiliária). Outro fundo bastante ativo no Brasil é o argentino Kaszek Ventures, formado pelos ex-executivos e fundadores do Mercado Livre. Criada em 2011, a gestora já captou três fundos nos Estados Unidos e na China, num total de US$ 430 milhões. Esses recursos foram investidos em 60 empresas, sendo dois terços no Brasil, afirma o sócio da Kaszek, Santiago Fossatti. Dessas, a gestora tem participação em dois unicórnios: o Nubank e a Gympass - marketplace de academias que acaba de entrar no grupo de empresas bilionárias. Como é comum nesse mundo de empreendedorismo, essa startup também tem outros dois investidores de peso, a Valor Capital Group e a Redpoint eVentures. A Valor foi criada pelo ex-embaixador dos Estados Unidos no Brasil Clifford Sobel e já investiu em 30 startups no País. Além da Gympass, o fundo também fez aporte na Stone, unicórnio de "maquininhas" brasileiro. O sócio da Valor Capital, Michael Nicklas, conta que a ideia inicial era investir em private equity no Brasil. "Mas vimos que tinha espaço para o venture capital e decidimos montar um fundo em 2012 para testar o mercado." Ao contrário dos outros fundos, a captação foi feita com famílias brasileiras. A Redpoint eVentures também foi fundada em 2012, a partir de uma parceria com duas gestoras do Vale do Silício: a Redpoint Ventures e a eVentures. "Os fundadores desses fundos começaram a vir ao Brasil em 2010, durante a fase do 'Cristo Redentor decolando no Rio', mas entenderam que precisavam de gente local para tocar os projetos dadas as complexidades do País", afirma Anderson Thees, sócio do Redpoint eVentures junto com Romero Rodrigues. Benjamin Lazar Davis

Benjamin Lazar Davis is a gifted multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, arranger, composer, and producer based in Brooklyn.

His forthcoming full length album 'Nothing Matters' — his very first as a solo artist — came out of an extensive period of touring followed by a difficult break up. To make the record, Davis spent all all of his money on instruments and recording gear, including drums and drum machines, both nylon and steel string acoustic guitars, an electric and an upright bass, a pump organ, a mellotron, a Moog, and an upright piano. He worked on the record every day, for 30 straight days, in his childhood bedroom at his parents’ house in Saratoga Springs, and once finished, he mixed it back in Brooklyn with his high school friend Luke Moellman (GGFO).

Although there are no other performers on the record, many collaborations went into the writing of the album, including cowrites with Kimbra ("Right Direction"), Alex Toth of Rubblebucket and Alexander F ("Love Song Seven Ways," "Life Is Dangerous," and "Choosing Sides"), Bridget Kearney of Lake Street Dive ("Somebody's Speaking For Me"), singer-songwriter Taylor Ashton ("Brass Tacks"), award-winning poet Michael Gizzi ("Acquitted"), and his brother, a brilliant lyricist, Tim Davis.

Benjamin Lazar Davis writes, records, and performs with Cuddle Magic, Joan as Police Woman, and Okkervil River, and he has worked with Anais Mitchell, Kimbra, Luke Temple, Jesse Harris, Henry Jamison, Wild Belle, Delicate Steve, Star Rover, Sam Amidon, Markus Acher (the Notwist), and Margaret Glaspy as a co-writer, side-musician, arranger, producer, studio musician, touring member, and band member in the past. While 'Nothing Matters' grew out of Davis's desire to make music on his own in a life where he has been a chronic collaborator, the album evokes inspiration from all of these artists, and he considers it a culmination of his life's work.

As he began work on the album, Davis found a photo of his father lounging beneath a hand- written sign that read "Nothing Matters," which eventually became the album's artwork; "It was taken in 1969 in Malawi Africa where he lived at the time. He taught me music growing up, and I think seeing that picture right before recording the record gave me a sense of letting go of all of the baggage that comes with making music and being in a relationship. When in the midst of the meditation of making the album, nothing matters. Just let the tape roll and the ideas flow..."

Brooklyn's My Favourite Things Fuses New LP Folk-Pop with Dreamy Shoegaze

Brooklyn-based quartet My Favourite Things have presented their new album ‘Fly I Will, Because I Can’, along with a clever accompanying video by Hiroshi Shafer, who is touted as one of Quentin Tarantino’s favorite artists. This new single 'Some Things Stay the Same' comes on the trail of the release of the first two singles 'A Little Closer' and 'I Don't Know'. The videos for both of these singles were created by Gi Yong Rhee.

My Favourite Things excels in creating ambiance with the use of very little or almost no electronics. It is all Tachler’s voice, synthesizers, guitars, harps, vibes, anything that will create a mood that slowly takes you along to exactly the places the band want to take you to.

The band's sound will appeal to fans of Blonde Redhead, Broadcast, Beach House, Warpaint, Lisa Germano, and Widowspeak. Our favourite tracks here include A Little Closer, Everything Changes, Nobody Knows, Stay a Little While, The Longest Winter, and Growing Pains.

Videographer Hiroshi Shafer explains his inspiration behind this new video: "Our friends used to live nearby around the block. We hung out or talked most of the day when we were little boys and girls. When we grow up, it’s not easy to fill the distance and time. I entrusted this feeling to my back yard snails and asked them to act in this music video." Dorothea wrote and produced all the songs with their many textures, owing to the use of multiple instruments, many of which she also played: violins, flutes and autoharps weave in and out of twinkling glockenspiels, vibraphones and intricate, sometimes shredding guitars, delivered on a solid bed of a grabbing bass and ripping drums, with Dorothea’s balmy voice hovering and twinkling atop. 

From a young age, her Korean/German/Croatian background has immersed her in a diversity of musical influences, which have shaped her. In 2009, she released “rarara” (Afterhours/Japan), followed by “Tomorrow’s Far Away” in 2013, featuring guest vocals from several friends and former band-mates, including Valerie Trebeljahr of Lali Puna, Damon Tutunjan from The Swirlies, Daru Oda (Norah Jones), Sean Meadows (June of 4, Lungfish), and Doug Scharin (Codeine, HIM, Rex). 

“Music was my anchor and my lighthouse in stormy and dark nights, and putting my inner turmoil into words really helped me process it better. It was kind of my metamorphosis, being disintegrated like a chrysalis, and being shaped into something new,” explains Tachler.  When performing live, My Favourite Things appear in different formations, ranging from a solo act to a five-piece band, featuring prominent musicians from the buoyant New York scene: Yoshio “Tony” Kobayashi on drums, Yusuke Yamamoto on vibraphone and synthesizers, Michael Figgiani on bass, and various other talents. 

The band has played many venues in the unforgiving NYC music circuit, transporting transfixed audiences from their chaotic built-up urban environments to a twilight world of their own favourite things. Last year, My Favourite Things also toured Germany, featuring Notwist frontman Markus Acher on drums, along with other talented and experienced musicians from Germany’s active band scene. ‘Fly I Will, Because I Can’ is out now and can be ordered from My Favourite Things' Bandcamp.

recommended digital releases, september 15th

a large majority of the music i listen to these days is done at work through a premium spotify subscription. the hardest part seems to be trying to remember when an album i’ve been anticipating finally comes out on whatever random friday.

i figure i’m not the only one so every friday i’m aiming to post five new releases from the past week (or so) as well as five recent releases from the past couple months that are available through spotify (and presumably the other streaming platforms).

new releases from the past week (or so):

chris bell "i am the cosmos" on omnivore [spotify] chris bell's lone solo album wasn't released until thirteen year's after his 1978 death. since then it's been expanded several times with the latest omnivore version breaking the two hour mark (thirty minutes longer than the rhino version from a few years ago). the album is a much more personal take on the power pop he made with big star evincing both spiritual elements and depression. vinyl nerd note: omnivore will be collecting all the tracks from this and chris bell's pre-big star recordings in a vinyl box set this november.

dylan earl "new country to be" on fabulon [spotify] dylan earl opened for songs: molina last week at hopscotch and i dug his classic country vibe. it turned out that his album came out that very day and i was able to confirm for him that it had reached spotify. now i've told you too!

lali puna "two windows" on morr [spotify, bandcamp] lali puna makes glitchy, electro pop that's not too far removed from the notwist both musically and emotionally- markus acher of the notwist is both a former member of lali puna and married to lead singer valerie trebeljahr.

michael nau "the load" ep on suicide squeeze [spotify, bandcamp] i haven't paid close attention to cotton jones or page france over the past few years but michael nau's solo work may change that. his latest ep comes off like a lo-fi, psychedelic wilco before they went dad rock. i was pretty much sold when the multitracked sax solo that closes off the opening track hit me.

irène schweizer and joey baron "live!" on intakt [spotify, bandcamp] a live duo recording of pianist schweizer and drummer baron from 2015. irène schweizer is a legend who has been playing jazz piano for more than fifty years (and free jazz almost as long). joey baron has long been associated with the the new york jazz scene and john zorn in particular. together they get a good swing going with music that is more melodic that the jazz i typically recommend.

slightly older stuff:

a certain smile "fits and starts" on ice nine [spotify, bandcamp] dreamy c-86 indie pop from portland that sounds pretty timeless.

caroline says "fifty million elvis fans can't be wrong" on western vinyl [spotify, bandcamp] originally issued three years ago as a limited cassette the debut caroline says release (which manages to reference elvis presley, lou reed and the beach boys) gets a proper release through western vinyl. the album alternates between introspective, garage-y indie pop and quiet songs full of layers.

julia holter "condemnation" single on domino [spotify] julia holter nails her cover of depeche mode's 1993 single with some help from nedelle torrisi and night jewel (aka ramona gonzalez). the first version is stark beauty with just vocals and quiet harmonium. the synth version adds some some burbling synths and bass but the focus remains on the vocals.

monk parker "crown of sparrows" on grand jury [spotify, bandcamp] i caught monk parker last weekend at hopscotch and was impressed by his "lambchop recording with godspeed you! black emperor album" vibe. vic chesnutt's "at the cut" (which was actually recorded with members of gy!be) would be another great album touchstone.

sparrow people "i thought of you" single on emotional response [spotify, bandcamp] a two song single from australian dirge-y post-pop band whose membership is intentionally vague (although i'm guessing david nichols and/or the cannanes are somehow involved).

Dorothea wrote and produced all the songs with their many textures, owing to the use of multiple instruments, many of which she also played: violins, flutes and autoharps weave in and out of twinkling glockenspiels, vibraphones and intricate, sometimes shredding guitars, delivered on a solid bed of a grabbing bass and ripping drums, with Dorothea’s balmy voice hovering and twinkling atop.

From a young age, her Korean/German/Croatian background has immersed her in a diversity of musical influences, which have shaped her. In 2009, she released “rarara” (Afterhours/Japan), followed by “Tomorrow’s Far Away” in 2013, featuring guest vocals from several friends and former band-mates, including Valerie Trebeljahr of Lali Puna, Damon Tutunjan from The Swirlies, Daru Oda (Norah Jones), Sean Meadows (June of 4, Lungfish), and Doug Scharin (Codeine, HIM, Rex).

“Music was my anchor and my lighthouse in stormy and dark nights, and putting my inner turmoil into words really helped me process it better. It was kind of my metamorphosis, being disintegrated like a chrysalis, and being shaped into something new,” explains Tachler.

When performing live, My Favourite Things appear in different formations, ranging from a solo act to a five-piece band, featuring prominent musicians from the buoyant New York scene: Yoshio “Tony” Kobayashi on drums, Yusuke Yamamoto on vibraphone and synthesizers, Michael Figgiani on bass, and various other talents.

The band has played many venues in the unforgiving NYC music circuit, transporting transfixed audiences from their chaotic built-up urban environments to a twilight world of their own favourite things. Last year, My Favourite Things also toured Germany, featuring Notwist frontman Markus Acher on drums, along with other talented and experienced musicians from Germany’s active band scene.

Brooklyn's My Favourite Things Announce Second Single 'I Don't Know' from Third Album

Brooklyn-based quartet My Favourite Things will be releasing their new album ‘Fly I Will, Because I Can’, for which they are previewing the new single 'I Don't Know' on the trail of their first single 'A Little Closer'. The videos for both singles were created by Gi Yong Rhee. 

This is the third album from My Favourite Things, founded in Brooklyn by Dorothea Tachler (formerly of Igloo, The Swirlies, Alles Wie Gross). Fans of Beach House, Broadcast, dreampop and shoegaze should enjoy the album’s melancholic swaying, melody-rich offerings. This album should also appeal to lovers of acoustic folk music artists such as James Yorkston and Bonnie “Prince” Billy. 

"This song is about the unknown, uncertainty, and on the flip side: potential. It's about the space you are in when you don't know about a certain thing or someone how it'll work out and there's the worst case thinking and best case thinking or hoping all happening at the same time. Cause really, we never know- it could go a number of ways,” explains Dorothea Tachler.

“I found the phrase "a little closer" synonymous with the feeling of anticipation. This is also self reflective of the band's anticipation, concurrent in real world / real time application, as they release their new singles, the new album, as they shoot music videos, etc. This video juxtaposes both the shooting of their music video to the recounting of their collective history over the years both on and off the stage - moments in the past that have guided and shaped them now in the present, bringing them a little closer to their dreams,” says videographer Gi Yong Rhee.
