fic wuth hannah and james on long island this summer. shes visits his family and they do all the things!! i feel like we should see their relationship outside of the context if their friends and school - basically how they are with each other alone!!

ummm this also took me like eons to finish bc i just couldn't write it how i wanted to so if the ending is like bad and cliche i'm sorry it's all i could do bc i wanted to post it after watching it sit in my drafts for like weeks 😭

either way this was a cute ask and i love exploring james and hannah's relationship as they hang outside of their friends' teasing and can just be themselves without prying eyes and whispers

long island was beautiful. hannah's been to quite a lot of places between her and her brothers traveling, but long island definitely made the top of her list. it was quaint, but beautifully surrounded by water and not far from the city. she understood why james and michael loved it so much and why they went home as frequently as they could. if she lived here, she'd probably never leave.

the couple started their morning out at the stonebridge country club where james could get a round in and hannah happily tagged along. contrary to popular belief, she actually really loved golf and could at least beat tyler whenever she followed her brothers out to the green.

she stood by the cart watching james prepare himself for his tee, a soft smile lining her features. she'd never seen him look so calm and content before, but it was a good look, especially after the long season he just endured. he definitely deserved the rest this offseason. the boy glanced back at her like he could feel her eyes on him. he sent her his own little charming smile before taking his swing.

the ball soared through the air and landed somewhere on the green. hannah clapped while james did a little curtsey which made her laugh.

"that was good," she hummed.

"think you can do better?" james teased while the brunette rolled her eyes. they both knew she could do as well as him or even better. she started lining up her swing, getting a feel for the direction of the wind so she could aim the right way.

the hockey player admired her the entire time. she had a natural swing that was most definitely learned from dylan and tyler. james didn't even need to correct her form or anything (but maybe hannah still played dumb sometimes so he could and she could feel his hands over hers as he swung the club with her). once hannah was ready, she shuffled a few inches over to the tee, planting her feet and steadying her hips.

"take it wide," james smiled.

her ball flew through the air and they watched it land close to where james's was. hannah grinned, finding her boyfriend's gaze behind her which was already smiling at her still.

"how was that?" she wondered as they walked back to the cart.

"eh, you could use some work," the boy joked earning him a punch in the shoulder. he grimaced, but his smile didn't disappear.

"shut up. you know i'm better than you," hannah rolled her eyes.

"oh, i know. don't worry," he leaned down to kiss her lips. they smiled into the kiss, lips molding into one another as james indulged himself for a moment because kissing on the course probably wasn't the most appropriate. there wasn't even anyone out though considering it was ten in the morning and only the "oldies" went the country club as james liked to put it.

"you're more affectionate during the offseason," hannah commented when the finally pulled apart. james rolled his eyes and tugged her back into the cart so they could keep moving.

"yeah, you're a lot less stressed too," the boy teased back. the slight breeze in the air felt nice as they rode down the hill. hannah's skirt ripppled across her thighs while she toyed with the ends of her hair. she decided to braid it back and put on a hat on so her baby hairs didn't get in her face when she was trying to putt.

james kept stealing little glances at her just because he wanted to. he thought she looked super hot in her golf outfit and as much as he loved golf, a small part of him could not wait until they were done so he could pull her back into the car for a much better kiss than what he gave her a few minutes ago.

"stop staring," hannah noticed his wandering eyes.

"what? i can't help that you look good," the boy shrugged with a small smirk.

"you're such a boy," she shook her head as they pulled to a stop and she hopped out to grab her club. all james did was beam because it was true. she looked good and he wasn't gonna deny that his staring was because of that.

the hockey player went first again to get his ball closer to the hole. he took a pretty hard swing and they watched the ball do a little jump onto the green before rolling some ways in the opposite direction of where james wanted it.

"shit," he mumbled.

"maybe you need to brush up on your skills," hannah taunted as she stepped into place to swing her ball. she knew james rolled his eyes, but he didn't say anything. it was a good thing she was pretty and he liked her.

hannah swung her ball out of the grass. it did a similar jump as james's before rolling in the right direction of the hole. her little pink ball stopped just short of a few inches from the pole.

"what the hell, that was unfair," james complained as they changed out their clubs for their putters.

"i told you," the gymnast grinned.

"it was probably just luck."

hannah held the flag out of the way as she watched her boyfriend eye just how far and how fast he needed to hit the ball. she thought he looked cute squatted down like that and squinting between his ball and the hole. boys always took golf so seriously.

"i don't have all day," the younger duke sister must've just been in a mood to poke at james all morning. he eyed her.

"it's ten in the morning."

"and?"

they stared at one another for another moment before james huffed and stood back up to take his shot. the ball rolled across the green and the couple watched it roll past hannah's feet onto the opposite end of the hole. the younger hagens brother scoffed in annoyance.

"fuck," he murmured and stomped back across to hopefully get it in this time. hannah struggled to not giggle knowing it'd just set james off even more.

it finally went in after the fourth hit. hannah cheered for him as they switched off so hannah could get her ball in. she was much closer than james was so they already knew she'd do it in three. despite her annoying the boy, he still smiled as he watched her line up her shot as if she was about to make a really crazy dismount off the bars. her light tap rolled her pink ball forward and directly into the hole like they just predicted. hannah looked over at james with a huge grin. he could never stay annoyed at her when she looked at him like that.

"alright, you won fair and square. good game," the hockey player kissed her forehead.

"maybe you'll beat me one day," hannah chuckled.

when they got back to the car it was still early, and by early it was 10:30. the house was probably awake by now and james' mom was cooking breakfast, but the brunette didn't want to go home quite yet. he liked this quiet time without his parents or siblings bothering them for something.

"wanna take a walk somewhere?" james wondered when they were back in the car.

"sure, where?" hannah scrolled through her phone for any missed notifications while james tried thinking of the best place to walk.

"we could just take a walk through the park here? the trails are pretty."

"yeah, that sounds fun. you know best anyway," the girl threw her hat into his backseat and unbraided her hair as they got back out. she didn't need it braided back anymore now that they weren't golfing.

"so what do you think of it here so far?" james wondered as he intertwined their fingers and led them to one of the paths.

"i really like it. it's beautiful and i can see why you and mike come home a lot,” the gymnast hummed and she liked seeing how his lips turned upright.

“i forget sometimes how nice it is. i get so used to being in boston that being here is like a vacation,” the boy laughed.

“it definitely beats where i’m from. i hate going home,” hannah scoffed a bit and james’ gaze slid sideways. he knew she didn’t have the best relationship with her parents and home was always a iffy subject.

“any reason why?”

“i’m being dramatic, sorry. i do like going home sometimes and i am grateful i have a place to go home to. it’s just that whenever i am home it’s always about my brothers and what they’re doing. it’s never really about me or what i have going on. it seems like my parents are always more interested in the games and the development camps tyler and dylan go to,” the duke sister back tracked because she was happy to go home every so often, it just wasn’t always fun. her brothers were the star more than she was.

“i see. i’m sorry. that must hurt,” james sympathized while hannah shrugged. she had become so desensitized to it that it really didn’t bother her as much as she was making it seem.

“i’ve gotten used to it, so it’s okay.”

“you shouldn’t have to get used to something like that though. parents should be supportive and interested in all of their kids’ interests,” maybe james was just saying that because his parents supported everything him and his siblings did no matter what.

“sometimes it’s just not like that for every family.”

being in long island together was really starting to show where james and hannah differed in life. hannah was slowly understanding why james was always so insistent on being there for her because that’s what his family was built on. on the other side, james was understanding why hannah was so independent and never asked for help.

the couple walked the trails for another thirty minutes before their stomach’s grumbled asking for food, so they decided to finally drive back to the house. james’ mom was inside cooking breakfast like the boy thought and smiled widely when the two came through.

“how was it?” she beamed.

“she beat me by a landslide. i had no idea she was that great at golf,” james said while hannah flushed.

"finally found some competition, huh? that's a first," kristine laughed.

james rolled his eyes at his mom's comment. she urged them to wash their hands before digging into the toast and eggs already made. "so what else is on the agenda for today?" mrs. hagens continued.

"uh, probably nothing. we've done a lot the past few days, so we're probably just gonna try and catch our breath," james chuckled while shoveling eggs into his mouth.

"i think we're gonna head up to the lake if you two wanna tag along. if not, mike's gonna stick around so you'll be stuck with him," krisitine said. hannah didn't have a huge preference on what they did, so it was up to james.

she looked over at him and he met her gaze, shrugging, "yeah, maybe. we'll see. when are you leaving?"

"probably later in the afternoon. if you wanna just stop by, that's okay too. just thought i'd offer it."

krisitine squeezed hannah's arm before walking out of the kitchen to leave the couple be. the gymnast smiled warmly at the affection. since being here, the hagens family was nothing but kind to hannah. kristine treated her like a second daughter and james was always super insistent on impressing her by taking her places around the area he liked going so she could see how he grew up his whole life. it was endearing and it warmed a part of the girl's heart she hadn't really felt in a long time.

"mom loves you," james hummed when he knew his mom was out of earshot.

"really?" the brunette giggled.

"i mean she loves everyone, but she really likes you. she was so excited to meet you properly when i told her you'd be coming for a few weeks. my whole family really likes you," james leaned over to press a quick kiss to her head despite his mouth full of egg still. hannah nearly dodged it with a laugh knowing she didn't want egg all over herself.

"that's sweet. i really like your family too."

"you're welcome here anytime you wanna come. i know my mom will be begging me to bring you home again," james laughed, but his words warmed hannah's heart all over again.

she knew she made the right decision letting james in because every other guy she talked to had never said something like that to her. it was always a one and done type of deal and granted, hannah was usually the one to break things off, this felt really good to her. james understood her more than anyone (besides samy, of course).

after washing up once breakfast was done, the couple decided to stay back instead. they were tired from the long morning and figured some slow time to themselves would be good after the long past few days of james showing her around. hannah found herself on the porch reading a book when james came out looking for her. neither of them said much, but the hockey player carefully wedged himself between hannah's legs and used her thigh as a pillow. his feet dangled off the edge of the couch.

"what are you doing?" hannah laughed when she saw her boyfriend making himself cozy.

"taking a nap?" james said in a "duh" tone.

"here?" the gymnast was still laughing.

"yeah, where else would i be?"

maybe the sweet talk was still a bit new to hannah, too. she blushed and got herself more comfortable as james slowly began to drift off. with her free hand, she dragged her nails across his scalp which added to james' comfort and tiredness. he was fully out seconds later and honestly, hannah wouldn't want it any other way.

it was good thing none of their friends were around because they would never hear the end of it if james' teammates saw him like this and hannah so mushy gushy. the whole lover feeling was something she could definitely get used to it though.

Sometime in the mid-to-late 1900s, Geoffrey does finally 'bury' his parents.

It's an idea he mulls over for a long time, and has thought about since they died -- but ultimately it's a decision he makes with Ian after they're reunited. Finding a plot in Stonebridge Cemetery in London is suggested once by Ian, because he recognizes this is more for Geoffrey's sake than it is his own. Though he grieves in his own way, he doesn't have half the baggage about it that his younger brother does. But Geoffrey adamantly does not want them buried in England, let alone anywhere near Carl Eldritch. It's actually in going through this whole process that he finally allows himself to admit some resentment for the man who raised him, so it ends up being cathartic in more ways than one. They settle instead on Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin, figuring that a larger establishment will ask less questions than a churchyard. It's historic, anyway, and the boys think their parents -- particularly their father -- would at least appreciate sharing soil with Michael Collins.

Obviously there are no bodies, and for as much as Geoffrey is looking for closure he isn't fond of the idea of empty caskets. It takes some creative explaining and a touch of mesmerism on Ian's part to wave off the matter of not actually having anything to bury. The headstones are simple and matching, with carved Celtic crosses and their parents' names -- but no dates. That was the only thing the brothers really argued over, with Geoffrey wanting to include the birth and death dates, and Ian not wanting to come up with some elaborate story about why they were trying to memorialize relatives who lived and died in the last century. He doesn't want to have to pretend these aren't their parents, and Geoffrey does eventually come to agree. Also at Ian's request, the names of the two babies lost between the boys' births are added to their mother's headstone.

Geoffrey spends a vast majority of his time living outside of Ireland, but whenever he's visiting Ian he makes a point of visiting their parents, too. He is the type to talk to the deceased when he's visiting their burial site, but only if he's alone. When he does make the rounds at Stonebridge he finds he has less to say to Eldritch as the years go on -- but with his parents, there's always a life update or something personal to share, and he appreciates having a quiet time and place to do so. For his mother, he brings flowers, and for his father, he brings the morning edition of a newspaper. For the latter, he picks whichever publisher's headlines would be least likely to "piss him right the fuck off", as Ian says.
