“I’m sorry.”

　　　

The memory was still fresh in your mind, just as if it happened yesterday. You were clearing your old, unwanted items out from your room before packing to move. Underneath your bed, you pulled out a DIY-ed photo journal that you’d tried to forget about.

Brushing off the dust from the cover, you took a seat at the edge of your bed, the book seemingly weighing twice as heavy as it is. It was pale blue with some white flowers decorated on it, with the words “Special moments” on the cover, something he threw together in celebration of your third anniversary.

(Back then you argued, but every moment’s special with you, sharing a laugh at how cheesy it was.)

After some internal debate, you decided to flip open the book to the first page, seeing a picture taken of the both of you before you both were even a couple. Tipsy and laughing at something the blond boy had said to you, it was taken at a Christmas party hosted by the Schumachers. Being a friend of Gina’s, you along with your family were invited over. 

While it wasn’t something as significant as love at first sight, you and Mick definitely became fast friends over the course of the night, talking about anything and everything. He endured the teasing that came afterwards when he asked Gina for your phone number, rolling his eyes and saying that you’re a fun person to talk to and be around with. 

The second picture stuck below the previous one was a selfie you both took after spending the day at the arcade together. Similarly, it was when Mick had yet to ask you out, but it was the day when he realised that he loves his best friend. His heart practically melted seeing how your eyes sparkled after he handed you a plush toy he caught from the claw machine, the toy that currently still sits on your bed. 

It was then he realised he wanted more of that - hearing your laughter and seeing your smile, spending the days with you, or something just as simple as getting morning coffee together or talking about the pigeon you saw by the road and mentioning that it reminds you of him. 

You flipped through the rest of the pages, pictures from your first date - followed by many others, gifts you both got each other, holidays celebrated together, races you went to see. The journal’s last entry was a little over halfway through the book (he left the rest empty, saying you both could continue to fill it up together after the journal was gifted to you). 

It was almost the same as the first picture, both of you at a small dinner hosted by the Schumachers. Except, he had his arm around your waist, and the affection was clear with the way you both looked at each other. And this time, the dinner was to commemorate Mick debuting in Formula 1.

　　　

It wasn’t like you both didn’t take any pictures together after that, but you both didn’t really have the time to go through them and stick them in the journal. The increasingly busy schedule not only for him but also for you now working your way through university wasn’t avoidable. You tried to fly to his races whenever you could afford to, and he tried to spend as much time with you whenever he had breaks between race weekends. But no matter how much time you both tried to find for each other, you both missed each other very, very dearly.

With the responsibilities you both were bearing on your shoulders and not wanting to burden the others with more worries, you and Mick decided to keep your mouth shut, thinking you both could tough it out. Which you both did, until 6 months into Mick’s second year of his Formula 1 career was when the thread was at the verge of snapping, and you both knew that you had to address this.

　　　

He came home to you during summer break, trying to cherish every second spent with you before he sat both of you down to talk, a couple of days before he had to leave to race again. 

“Love, we need to talk.”

You both knew it was over before the conversation even started.

“We haven’t been able to spend a lot of time with each other recently, and- please don’t take this like I’m blaming you because I really am not-” He almost panicked with his words but you held his hand in yours.

“I know, Mick, I understand.”

“I just… I’ve missed you so much, love.”

“I’ve missed you too.”

Mick pulled you closer to him, savouring the moment where he could have his arms around you like this.

You broke the silence and continued, knowing the longer you both dragged this on the more painful it will end up being.

“But I don’t think I can really handle a relationship where I spend more time missing my other half than actually spending time with them in person, at least, not right now. And I think… I think it’s safe to say that you feel the same. You have your career to chase, and I have mine. I think this will only affect our focus on what we want to achieve, and it really hasn’t been the easiest to try and find balance between everything.”

Long distance: Alpine confirms talks with Mick Schumacher

The "plan B" endurance race with the highlight of the 24 Hours of Le Mans is taking shape for Mick Schumacher. The Frenchman Bruno Famin, vice president of Alpine Motorsport and interim team boss of the Formula 1 racing team, confirmed talks with the 24-year-old. "We are talking to Mick about the possibility of working in our endurance program," said Famin at a press conference on the sidelines of the Japanese Grand Prix (Sunday, 7 a.m. CEST/Sky) and added: "We are trying to organize a test soon." Schumacher lost his Formula 1 regular cockpit at Haas at the end of 2022. This year, the son of record world champion Michael Schumacher is a reserve driver for the top team Mercedes, and his chances of one of the last open regular positions for the 2024 season appear to be slim. Tbh I disagree with the idea that fanfiction by default translates badly into quote unquote "real books" "because no worldbuilding." 1) I think it's untrue and disingenuous to portray fanfiction as a medium inherently lacking worldbuilding, plenty of fic authors really enjoy worldbuilding and character development and, especially if they're writing an AU fic, can put so much work into worldbuilding and character development that the fic effectively stands on its own apart from the original work entirely (whether or not the author continuing to consider it fanfiction is a crutch is debatable, not the point), and 2) I think it's untrue and disingenuous to portray "real books" (i.e. a book that has gone through whatever op thinks is an acceptable standard of traditional publishing) as a medium inherently requiring worldbuilding to be worth reading/to be "complete." If I'm being perfectly honest I just don't think a lot of you actually read a lot of "real books" if you think that a book introducing a character or characters with very little preamble before getting to what people call "the good stuff" is inherently a flaw. Common story structures are not a rule every author is bound to following, and many more experimental and/or greatly influential books play with story structure, worldbuilding (which tbh isn't that important if ur not writing fantasy or sci-fi, u guys DO know there are genres besides fantasy and sci-fi, right?), developing characters in like, the Tumblr writing advice sense where "developed" means "has a backstory", etc. Especially if a book is a mainly a character piece, a lot of rules about "story structure" kinda go out the window. I also think a statement like "fics that have had their serial numbers filed off are stories, but not books" means absolutely nothing, it just relies on a reader's preexisting ideas about the inherent virtue of "books" when compared to "stories", ignoring the systems in place that often separate "books" from "just stories" AND the fact that short stories, vignettes, etc. are absolutely acceptable forms in which to write fiction. Of course this isn't to say that books that started off as fanfiction CAN'T have structural problems, a lot of fiction (fan- or otherwise) that was originally published serially online as the author was writing it can have structural and pacing issues where chapters don't really feel connected, threads start but don't lead anywhere, etc., but like always it's not really a problem unique to fanfiction and also the way people are going about it is just so hollow and performatively intellectual. So I’ve been thinking more about the asks I was sent about Keith on this tour and what the change up in concert structure (one solo song by Keith instead of two) portends for the band and the long term reception of this tour.

I’ve said it before, but I have to repeat, with even more emphasis, that I’m almost blown away by how much criticism there is of the musical quality of this tour 2 shows in. Especially after Keith has started sitting to play some of the songs.

There’s still people, generally Boomers, hitting back, but it’s never a real defense of their musical integrity or ability, just an appeal to age:

(Also the ‘they don’t need the money’ take is kind of stupid because UK death tax is a bitch and any of their British assets that aren’t tied up in the band’s Swiss based corporation are going to vanish by almost half when they’re split. Not to mention two of them have a ton of kids that it will probably need to be divided amongst. And Mick has always been money hungry).

I was especially struck by the person who termed it ‘grading on a nostalgia curve’, because I think that’s a spot on description for the typical defense, whether it’s coming from Boomers who spent $800 on a ticket or not:

You may see it panned by individual critics or newspapers, I sincerely doubt any big music writers or magazines will be that harsh towards the tour because the Stones sell and they want access to the band more than integrity. It’s the same reason Hackney Diamonds got such glowing reviews. All the Stones’ albums since Steel Wheels get amazing mainstream reviews and then 5-10 years later everyone goes back and admits they weren’t that good/outright suck. By the same vein, I think once the band is genuinely over and a few years have passed, the consensus will shift to ‘they would have had a lot more integrity and dignity if they called it quits after No Filter, because everything that followed was the band rapidly becoming a parody of itself.’

And I do think the end is coming sooner rather than later. Tour insurance only becomes harder to secure with time (Mick would never take the risk of financially wiping himself out that personally guaranteeing a tour would run and most venues wouldn’t want to deal with liability that anyway) and they know it’s only getting worse musically whether or not they’ll ever own up to it. Embarrassment will win over eventually if physicals don’t. I tentatively doubt they’ll ever officially announce a last tour, because they have a longstanding aversion to the kind of pity involved in that, but I don’t seriously believe we’ll see more than one more European tour and maybe a final US/North America one.
