Daily Devotional: Exodus 2:11-25
Daily Devotional: Exodus 2:11-25
Moses kills an Egyptian in defense of a Hebrew slave. The story tells us that Moses recognized the Hebrew as his own people, which means he identified as a Hebrew even though he was raised an Egyptian. When Pharaoh discovers what Moses has done, he tries to kill Moses, forcing Moses to flee Egypt. Moses rescues some Midianite women from some harsh shepherds. They recognize him as an Egyptian. He…

When Little Things Get You Down
The littles adore their very tall cousins. We are fortunate to have a plethora of grands living close to us, aged two through twenty-one. We have enough interactions with family to appreciate the beauty of them genuinely enjoying each other. To a degree. Younger children have an energy level that seems unlimited–constant-motion machines that never need rest. At times that can feel a bit…

Nothing Can Hinder the Lord
4 Within the passes, by which Jonathan sought to go over to the Philistine garrison, there was a rocky crag on the one side and a rocky crag on the other side. The name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh. 5 The one crag rose on the north in front of Michmash, and the other on the south in front of Geba. 6 Jonathan said to the young man who carried his armor, “Come, let us go…

Judges 7: God Thins Gideon's Ranks Before Defeating The Midianites
1 Early in the morning, Jerub-Baal (that is, Gideon) and all his men camped at the spring of Harod. The camp of Midian was north of them in the valley near the hill of Moreh.
2 The Lord said to Gideon, “You have too many men. I cannot deliver Midian into their hands, or Israel would boast against me, ‘My own strength has saved me.’
3 Now announce to the army, ‘Anyone who trembles with fear may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.’” So twenty-two thousand men left, while ten thousand remained.
4 But the Lord said to Gideon, “There are still too many men. Take them down to the water, and I will thin them out for you there. If I say, ‘This one shall go with you,’ he shall go; but if I say, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ he shall not go.”
5 So Gideon took the men down to the water. There the Lord told him, “Separate those who lap the water with their tongues as a dog laps from those who kneel down to drink.”
6 Three hundred of them drank from cupped hands, lapping like dogs. All the rest got down on their knees to drink.
7 The Lord said to Gideon, “With the three hundred men that lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hands. Let all the others go home.”
8 So Gideon sent the rest of the Israelites home but kept the three hundred, who took over the provisions and trumpets of the others.
Now the camp of Midian lay below him in the valley.
9 During that night the Lord said to Gideon, “Get up, go down against the camp, because I am going to give it into your hands.
10 If you are afraid to attack, go down to the camp with your servant Purah
11 and listen to what they are saying. Afterward, you will be encouraged to attack the camp.” So he and Purah his servant went down to the outposts of the camp.
12 The Midianites, the Amalekites and all the other eastern peoples had settled in the valley, thick as locusts. Their camels could no more be counted than the sand on the seashore.
13 Gideon arrived just as a man was telling a friend his dream. “I had a dream,” he was saying. “A round loaf of barley bread came tumbling into the Midianite camp. It struck the tent with such force that the tent overturned and collapsed.”
14 His friend responded, “This can be nothing other than the sword of Gideon son of Joash, the Israelite. God has given the Midianites and the whole camp into his hands.”
15 When Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation, he bowed down and worshiped. He returned to the camp of Israel and called out, “Get up! The Lord has given the Midianite camp into your hands.”
16 Dividing the three hundred men into three companies, he placed trumpets and empty jars in the hands of all of them, with torches inside.
17 “Watch me,” he told them. “Follow my lead. When I get to the edge of the camp, do exactly as I do.
18 When I and all who are with me blow our trumpets, then from all around the camp blow yours and shout, ‘For the Lord and for Gideon.’”
19 Gideon and the hundred men with him reached the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after they had changed the guard. They blew their trumpets and broke the jars that were in their hands.
20 The three companies blew the trumpets and smashed the jars. Grasping the torches in their left hands and holding in their right hands the trumpets they were to blow, they shouted, “A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!”
21 While each man held his position around the camp, all the Midianites ran, crying out as they fled.
22 When the three hundred trumpets sounded, the Lord caused the men throughout the camp to turn on each other with their swords. The army fled to Beth Shittah toward Zererah as far as the border of Abel Meholah near Tabbath.
23 Israelites from Naphtali, Asher and all Manasseh were called out, and they pursued the Midianites.
24 Gideon sent messengers throughout the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites and seize the waters of the Jordan ahead of them as far as Beth Barah.”
So all the men of Ephraim were called out and they seized the waters of the Jordan as far as Beth Barah.
25 They also captured two of the Midianite leaders, Oreb and Zeeb. They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb at the winepress of Zeeb. They pursued the Midianites and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon, who was by the Jordan.

Creation 19: Goofus and Gallant (parody)
Tumblr media
The crimes of Goofus are based on folktales from the Jewish Tanakh, which includes books in the Torah and Nevi'im, written between 600 and 100 BC. Some of these books (Genesis, Exodus, etc.) were later integrated into the Christian and Muslim doctrines.
The Goofus and Gallant cartoon was created by psychologist, educator, and Highlights magazine founder Dr. Garry Cleveland Myers in 1938, and has been drawn by a succession of illustrators. The longest run was 32 years (1952-84) by artist Marion Hull Hammel.

I'm not Jewish and haven't read the Torah, but I have seen Jewish ppl say that even the Torah doesn't claim Jewish people are Indigenous to Israel. Abraham was born in modern day Iraq and finds Israel, in which there are people already there.
Also, other countries were considered to build Israel on, like Guyana and Australia, but the British landed on Palestine
Jewish people ARE historically and biblically indigenous to the Holy Land. There is no doubt about this and I don't think removing their indigeneity is gonna do any of us good.
However, Jewish people are not the FIRST people to have settled in the land of Canaan, many indigenous groups did exist there from the beginning, such as the Midianites, Philistines (not related to Palestinians) Hittites, Moabites and etc. Interestingly enough, Abraham (a) was a Canaanite himself, so Arabs and Israelites do share a common ancestry through Ishmael (a) and Isaaq (a) respectively. This is attested in Islamic manuscripts as well. With that said, I'm not gonna go through religious texts, because they aren't exactly helpful as a historical source. Most secular sources attest the fact that there was an Israelite kingdom, however, it does not correspond to the borders of today's settler state. The difference is that there was already a group of people that had settled in the holy land for 1400 years and have lives side by side with the Jewish and Christian people, these people are indigenous to that land, so for a group of people to come back centuries later and throw these natives out of their homes is simply not right.
But I think it's important that Jewish people aren't the only people who are indigenous, Samaritans are also indigenous and have remained so even before the Arab conquest. While they don't consider themselves Jewish, despite following the Mosaic laws, they are not given the same rights as their Jewish counterparts.

So Israel stole land…
Well, I have some good news for you.
We will gladly give the land back! No, seriously.
But only after YOU -- the world -- return your land to the native people you stole it from.
When the Australians give the island back to the Aborigines.
And the New Zealanders give their island back to the Maori.
When the Americans and the Canadians and the Spanish give the whole continent back to the Natives.
Alaska to the Eskimos and Inuit.
Hawaii to Hawaiians.
When China frees Tibet.
When South Africa returns to the original Africans.
When Egypt returns the Sinai to the Bedouin and Pakistan will revert back to India again.
When the Swedes and Norwegians give the land to the Sami.
When the English frees Ireland and Scotland.
When France returns to the Gauls.
And Iraq is returned to the Babylonians.
And Persia is Sumer again.
Then and only then will we gladly give our land back.
But not to the pretend watermelon people 🍉 --- but to those who were there before us.
To the Canaanites, the Amorites, the Moabites, the Girgashites, the Hittites, the Midianites and the Levites.
but…
Alas!
They no longer exist.
So we will stay here.
But YOU can happily go back to where ever YOU came from.
And if you don't like it, well… Keep your mouth shut.
- The Jewish people who returned to their land after thousands of years.
Chag Sameach and Am Israel Chai!
HT @BearShai for putting this together.

"If he commands you to burn [kill] children, your lord is evil." -- Ser Davos Seaworth
Genesis 22:1-2, 9-10
And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.
And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. [...]
And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.
And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.
Deuteronomy 3.3-6
So the Lord our God delivered into our hands Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people: and we smote him until none was left to him remaining.
And we took all his cities at that time, there was not a city which we took not from them, threescore cities, all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan.
All these cities were fenced with high walls, gates, and bars; beside unwalled towns a great many.
And we utterly destroyed them, as we did unto Sihon king of Heshbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children, of every city.
Numbers 21:33-35
And they turned and went up by the way of Bashan: and og the king of bashan went out against them, he, and all his people, to the battle at edrei.
And the Lord said unto Moses, Fear him not: for I have delivered him into thy hand, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon.
So they smote him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was none left him alive: and they possessed his land.
Numbers 31:1-3, 17-18
And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
Avenge the children of Israel of the Midianites: afterward shalt thou be gathered unto thy people.
And Moses spake unto the people, saying, Arm some of yourselves unto the war, and let them go against the Midianites, and avenge the Lord of Midian. [...]
Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him.
But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.
Regarding Abraham, believers always wail "bUt gOd wAs nEvEr gOiNg tO LeT hIm KiLL hIs sOn!!"
Okay, question: did Abraham pass the test, or fail the test? Did god want someone as his prophet who would unquestioningly murder his own son, or did he want someone who would find such a command barbaric and insane? The problem isn't what god would have done, it's what Abraham would have done, and why god would find that desirable in an ideal messenger.
And never mind Isaac, what about all the other children that god ordered be murdered, or murdered himself?
Genesis 7:19-23
And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered. Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered. And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man: All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died. And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.
Your god is evil.

The Grass Is Always Greener…
1 Now the people of Reuben and the people of Gad had a very great number of livestock. And they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, and behold, the place was a place for livestock. 2 So the people of Gad and the people of Reuben came and said to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the chiefs of the congregation, 3 “Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and…

Numbers 31: God Commands Moses To Take Vengeance On Midianites
1 The Lord said to Moses,
2 “Take vengeance on the Midianites for the Israelites. After that, you will be gathered to your people.”
3 So Moses said to the people, “Arm some of your men to go to war against the Midianites so that they may carry out the Lord’s vengeance on them.
4 Send into battle a thousand men from each of the tribes of Israel.”
5 So twelve thousand men armed for battle, a thousand from each tribe, were supplied from the clans of Israel.
6 Moses sent them into battle, a thousand from each tribe, along with Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, who took with him articles from the sanctuary and the trumpets for signaling.
7 They fought against Midian, as the Lord commanded Moses, and killed every man.
8 Among their victims were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba—the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword.
9 The Israelites captured the Midianite women and children and took all the Midianite herds, flocks and goods as plunder.
10 They burned all the towns where the Midianites had settled, as well as all their camps.
11 They took all the plunder and spoils, including the people and animals,
12 and brought the captives, spoils and plunder to Moses and Eleazar the priest and the Israelite assembly at their camp on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan across from Jericho.
13 Moses, Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the community went to meet them outside the camp.
14 Moses was angry with the officers of the army—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—who returned from the battle.
15 “Have you allowed all the women to live?” he asked them.
16 “They were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice and enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the Lord in the Peor incident, so that a plague struck the Lord’s people.
17 Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man,
18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.
19 “Anyone who has killed someone or touched someone who was killed must stay outside the camp seven days. On the third and seventh days you must purify yourselves and your captives.
20 Purify every garment as well as everything made of leather, goat hair or wood.”
21 Then Eleazar the priest said to the soldiers who had gone into battle, “This is what is required by the law that the Lord gave Moses:
22 Gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, lead
23 and anything else that can withstand fire must be put through the fire, and then it will be clean. But it must also be purified with the water of cleansing. And whatever cannot withstand fire must be put through that water.
24 On the seventh day wash your clothes and you will be clean. Then you may come into the camp.”
Dividing the Spoils
25 The Lord said to Moses,
26 “You and Eleazar the priest and the family heads of the community are to count all the people and animals that were captured.
27 Divide the spoils equally between the soldiers who took part in the battle and the rest of the community.
28 From the soldiers who fought in the battle, set apart as tribute for the Lord one out of every five hundred, whether people, cattle, donkeys or sheep.
29 Take this tribute from their half share and give it to Eleazar the priest as the Lord’s part.
30 From the Israelites’ half, select one out of every fifty, whether people, cattle, donkeys, sheep or other animals. Give them to the Levites, who are responsible for the care of the Lord’s tabernacle.”
31 So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the Lord commanded Moses.
32 The plunder remaining from the spoils that the soldiers took was 675,000 sheep,
33 72,000 cattle,
34 61,000 donkeys
35 and 32,000 women who had never slept with a man.
36 The half share of those who fought in the battle was:
337,500 sheep,
37 of which the tribute for the Lord was 675;
38 36,000 cattle, of which the tribute for the Lord was 72;
39 30,500 donkeys, of which the tribute for the Lord was 61;
40 16,000 people, of whom the tribute for the Lord was 32.
41 Moses gave the tribute to Eleazar the priest as the Lord’s part, as the Lord commanded Moses.
42 The half belonging to the Israelites, which Moses set apart from that of the fighting men—
43 the community’s half—was 337,500 sheep,
44 36,000 cattle,
45 30,500 donkeys
46 and 16,000 people.
47 From the Israelites’ half, Moses selected one out of every fifty people and animals, as the Lord commanded him, and gave them to the Levites, who were responsible for the care of the Lord’s tabernacle.
48 Then the officers who were over the units of the army—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—went to Moses
49 and said to him, “Your servants have counted the soldiers under our command, and not one is missing.
50 So we have brought as an offering to the Lord the gold articles each of us acquired—armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings and necklaces—to make atonement for ourselves before the Lord.”
51 Moses and Eleazar the priest accepted from them the gold—all the crafted articles.
52 All the gold from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds that Moses and Eleazar presented as a gift to the Lord weighed 16,750 shekels.
53 Each soldier had taken plunder for himself.
54 Moses and Eleazar the priest accepted the gold from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds and brought it into the tent of meeting as a memorial for the Israelites before the Lord.
