#vinyloftheday is...well, I'm not sure what the hell it is. #MikeBatt ... A guy whose career has largely been under the radar but has had some very strange impacts, such as helping to create the children's act the wombles, discovering pop chanteuse Katie Melua, doing string and orchestral arrangements for the progressive rock band Family, wrote songs for the folk rock act Steeleye Span and Art Garfunkel, and co-wrote the title song to phantom of the Opera with Andrew Lloyd webber. I can't say I love this record, but every few years I pull it out because it has some interesting catchy bits when it doesn't get too cloying... As well as writing about Alices adventures in Wonderland Lewis Carrol also wrote a series of nonsense poems one of which was called The Hunting of the Snark - Peter turned into a pop opera by Mike Batt of the Wombles fame (see album cover). Here’s an extract from the poem ... You may seek it with thimbles — and seek it with care;
You may hunt it with forks and hope;
You may threaten its life with a railway-share;
You may charm it with smiles and soap — For the Snark's a peculiar creature, that won't    Be caught in a commonplace way. Do all that you know, and try all that you don't:    Not a chance must be wasted to-day! "'But oh, beamish nephew, beware of the day, 
If your Snark be a Boojum! For then 
You will softly and suddenly vanish away, 
And never be met with again!' The poem is an allegory for our pursuit of the impossible - dreams that we blow out of all proportion which can - if they fail to manifest for us - spell our doom!
