Y'know thinking back about Solche works, despite myself not ever reading through any of that shit, but I've noticed in both Bastian and Cry better yet beg is that Solche writes two types of women: "Women who exist to be useless expendable sexist stereotypical women whose only job is to make the leading lady shine" and "Leading ladies who are damsels in distress that aren't getting saved, they exist to give up the fantasy of a pure existence, the perfect victim and of course have to take the worst tortures for that to happen"

I've never read Bastian (I will give it a read tho.)

Cry or Better Yet Beg, despite it being an insult to actual victims of abuse and SA on top or having a psychopath for a love interests (WHO FOR SOME REASON HAVE PEOPLE ROOTING FOR HIM DESPITE CLEARLY SHOWING SIGNS THAT HE'S THE SCUM OF THE EARTH), has potential.

Hear me out on this.

I mean, it already is a great story. I love reading about Layla's journey. Like baby girl's life fell apart when her mum left her to be with another man. She watched her father spiral into depression until he unfortunately passed away in his sleep. She got rejected and abused by damn near every family member who had her in their custody until she met Bill, who, despite being reluctant to take her in, grew to love and protect her. And we watch her grow to be hard-working and ambitious.

And I think Matthias' character has or had potential, too. But NOT as a Love Interest. I think the "bird in the cage" concept is an interesting idea to explore when it comes to Matthias' character because it reminds of Trevor Noah's quote in his book, Born a Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood, where he explained:

"The way my mother always explained it, the traditional man wants a woman to be subservient, but he never falls in love with subservient women. He's attracted to independent women. "He's like an exotic bird collector," she said. "He only wants a woman who is free because his dream is to put her in a cage."

Matthias is not some confused and emotionally constipated man who's never felt or experienced love. He's far from it. And I don't think he's in love with Layla as many people delude - I mean think - he is. I don't think a man in love would ever view the person he's in love with as a bird he wants to keep in a cage.

Personally, i think what draws Matthias to Layla is that, Layla, like a bird (or the canary that he keeps caged), is a free spirit despite how hard and tough her life was growing up. And I also think Matthias loves the idea of taming and domesticating Layla, the same way a person tames a wild animal. And to add, I also think he views Layla as some kind of trophy. Something to possess and control.

Imagine how interesting Cry or Better Yet Beg would have been if it explored those themes and went that direction if Solche actually portrayed Matthias as the abusive POS he is instead of a love interest.

Imagine how interesting Cry or Better Yet Beg would have been if it was a story of a young bright and ambitious girl who loses her bright glow at the hands of an abusive and controlling aristocrat and ends up being stuck in an unhappy marriage with said abusive and controlling wrist WITHOUT giving that aristocrat an redemption arc with no pay off and make it seem like he can get away with the heinous things he did with NO character development and NO consequences for his actions.

I'm sure you're familiar with more of the other vain elämää participants than i am, sooo what songs of theirs do you think would be great for johannes to cover? and also vice versa

I think I know more songs from the participants than I can think of on the spot, so there are probably plenty of good options I'll miss out on. Still, looking through it all makes me even more excited for the season.

Several pages of pondering under the cut

Now the easiest for me is Riippuvainen by Lauri Haav. There's something about it that has that kind of melancholy that works very well for Johannes, but it's still quite different from his style. There'd be a lot of room to make it his , and over all I'd just love to hear it. However, I think Johannes could pull off almost any Lauri Haav song. They have some very similar elements in their music.

For Viivi, I wouldn't be surprised if Johannes went for Aina. However, I'm not sure if Aina would have been out long enough to get picked, so that's in the air. I'm not really familiar with Viivi's discography, But I'd also say USA has the kind of humours lighthearted touch with hard hitting lyrics that would be Johannes' style.

Niw, Jonna Tervomaa is the first in the list with the kind of expansive discography that is really hard to pinpoint what one might gravitate toward. Skimming through it, I can safely say Johannes would do well on many of these songs, especially on the more recent ones. There's a lot of really lovely melodies and soft tomes, exactly the kind of stuff that Kuumaa works with a lot, but still a really different sound. Not so streamlined to the pop format. I know I'll love wwhatever Johannes picks from here. Listening to Kirkonrotat I'd like to hear that one though. I can hear how the violin would fit there. Or maybe something more hard hitting like Strippaa mulle taas. That would make for an amazing cover.

Now Vesta is one of those artists that I have heard a lot about but heard nothing from, so I can really make any guesses as to any song. However, she also has a softness to her music that Johannes will be easily able to work with. What will really make any cover interesting is how anyone is able to take, twist and interpret the very experimental choices and styles of her music. There are a lot of wild things there, and I hope all the others will take inspiration from it when arranging thier covers, because it would be a shame to do something plain with her music. Something like Kesäwau should not be reduced in it's style.

Pelle Miljoona is also a challenge to pick from, for two reasons. 1) he also has a massive discography under his name, which gives a lot of options. Number 2) he has been in a lot of bands and lineups, so a lot of music listed under him is not written or composed by him, and so out of the question. Over all, I do hope whatever Johannes does with his music, he challenges himself to lean into the alternative rock elements Pelle Miljoona is so famous for. Or at least do something out of the realm of what Hotband would do.

Then we have Mikki Kauste of Egotrippi fame. Egotrippi has a lot of very nostalgicc music for me. Whatever Johannes picks, I'll die. And if it is Älä Koskaan ikinä, I may get revived too in one go. If it's Matkustaja, everyone is obligated to read Some things are still unknown, especially chapter 15. You can also keep in mind that that cover will be official soundtrack for the fic. I'll just leave this comment from the author's notes here:

"Guess who had to scroll through the Finnish Wikipedia page for SingStar to see all the song selections just to confirm if Matkustaja by Egotrippi was in fact there or not. It is. And by God could Johannes sing it well."

And then there's Käärijä. As I already said, People's champion is likely. However, withJohannes wild streack, I'd love to hear any song off fantastista. Kiertävä sirkus would certainly fit for how things are going for Hotband. Aikuinen or Micmac could also make for interesting covers, especially if Johannes gets to rewriting lyrics.

Now, for most of these artista I'm not familiar enough with their styles and artistic visions to actually say what they might want to go for, which songs they like, or what'd be a challenge for them, making picking songs for them to cover simply guesswork.

I do want to hear Luotan Tulevaan covered. It is such a simple song, but I also know a lot of artists already love it (Sexmane coming to mind, as well as Käärijä himself). It is a song that resonates with people, but moving it away from the piano tune and into new territory could really make it something special.

I'll be a bit dissappointed if at least Tulipalo or Ylivoimainen isn't picked. They're the big songs, but they're also so very Kuumaa. What would they sound like from any other performer?

And since we have musicians with a lot more experiemntal, alternative sounds to them, really any hotband song could get completely turnedon its head. I'm really interested to hear any and all covers Vesta and käärijä do whatever they pick.

So yeah. This season is stacked.

100% yes to the first part, i'm definitely super anti colonial. inherent to the whole anti capitalism thing tbh.

i wouldn't say i'm super well read but i've read some of the big name books/authors in intersectional feminist theory! (Audre Lorde, bell hooks, Judith Butler, Angela Davis, to name a few)

one of my goals from 2024 that i'm carrying into 2025 is to read more nonfiction and that definitely includes feminist lit! i'm currently reading Feminism is for Everybody by bell hooks and Hood Feminism by Mikki Kendall and would def recommend both so far. i also have an Audre Lorde on my shelf that i haven't gotten to yet so hopefully that happens this year too!

Lonato's words are light, compared to his heavy brow as he moves to an adjacent seat, watching as the guests make themselves comfortable.

"But don't forget - we have a reason to be here tonight. I doubt you need rebriefing, so... keep your ears open for anyone who could be convinced. And do not actively pursue - I spotted Lady Rhea amongst the group here. And if she caught even the slightest hint..."

He scowls, looking off over the beachfront - long strips of white, dotted by torches, the aesthetic almost like he was in the Faerghan north. Almost, save for the endless violet blue that seemed to stretch on for forever.

"But, that can wait. The night is young, even if I am not."

He reaches for one of the bottles, pouring himself a light drink.

He rarely had alcohol - it accentuated his worst traits, and lessened his chivalric ones.

Plus, by the goddess, most of them tasted awful. He mostly stuck to tea.

But tonight was an event. And he could let some of his shields down.

But only some.

"Drink?"

Miklan rested his helmet against the seat, the low rumbles of the waves crashed against his ears as salt air laid gentle on his tongue. Even with a helmet, this was the most comfortable he's been since, last time he checked, leaving House Gautier. It would've been nicer to take it off, but he wasn't in the mood to cause the nobles to shriek their heads off for the guards.

A pale head of hair floated by the corner of his eye. The brigand didn't bother to straighten up from his seat when Lonato sat beside him. "Tch, the armour's fine." The armour was sturdy yet ornate, the nicest thing he's owned in a while. Finding a battalions's worth of Northern lord armour at the shop made his head turn.

Here he was barely getting by with his rusted suit from House Gautier, and those rotten children were chucking theirs at pawn shops? It made him sick.

He rolled his eyes at the nobleman which thankfully, he didn't pick up on. The visor might not be ideal, but it was useful. Turning to look at the lord, he held his gaze at the older man. "Yeah, yeah—I know. Don't tell me how to do my job"

The Lords of Mach were itching to complain about some higher power, be it their King or their Church. But, he'll have to bide his time and play along with Lonato and the Western Church's revenge quest. "If you're not going to charge towards House Gautier, then I'm not charging towards the Archbishop and her stooges."

Not bothering to look at the nobleman, Miklan grabbed the bottle from him. He popped off the cork and swung the bottle up. Bubbles floated down his throat, staining his tastebuds with the mellow flavour of crisp apples as a light buzz tickled his ears. Goddess—this was divine. How long he ached for real alcohol.

Reaching out to grab another bottle for himself, the clink against the glass chimed Miklan to pluck more for the journey home. He felt Lonato's disapproval pursed between thin lips—to hell with what the nobleman approved of. The brigand was going to enjoy himself.

I'm especially curious about Builderman and Elliot since they look like they hate the reader the most.

they all would slowly ease up, walking on eggshells on trying to not trigger you once more. The survivors allow Taph and Chance to stay near Tamed killer reader the most to calm them down whenever agitated.

Builderman would still be wary, he can't deny but stay cautious. Maybe it's just your ploy?

Elliot would be neutral, he don't know what to feel about it. But he's cool with it though.
