SPOILER FOR MIKAWA FLOWER FESTIVAL/ INAZUMA 5.4 EVENT ACT 3 CUTSCENE

Congratulations Inazuma lore fans !!! We finally got the faces of Iwakura/Mikoshi Michihiro & Mikoshi Nagamasa. How are we feeling ? On one hand, I'm so, so happy !!! (bdbdjnsbskd they were so handsome aaaaaa!!! Why do I always simp for lore characters) Inazuma lore fans, you guys are the bravest soldiers I've known. Waiting 4 years just to get some crumbs... I applause your bravery & patience. Now we just need Asase Hibiki & the resolution with her cat, and also her lover Takamine the Mistsplitter. And Ako Domeki and his Seiraimaru ! (But players of 2022 Golden Apple Archipelago... *sobs* that was my first summer event, can't believe I cried for a ship. Kosekimaru, we will never forget you😭)
On the other hand.... *grit teeth* whoa Hoyo finally remember their world quests & integrate them to the storylines where the majority of the players can see it. Surely, Natlan’s world quest will have the same treatment. Surely, this means Team Xbalanque will not be too far. Surely, we will have their faces reveal. Surely- *overdosed by copium*
By the way !!! This event sure does cement my (copium) theory that the recent storylines are foreshadowing to Natlan’s plottwist. Living in an ambiguous state between life & death... hallucinating that there are enemies everywhere... feeling entrapped in a long, long nightmare... hmm... I wonder who else was corrupted by the Abyss & lived in an ambiguous state for such a long time...
Hmm...........
Okay maybe I'm just coping.
By the way, if you guys are interested in Inazuma's lore, particularly Michihiro & Nagamasa above, I recommend these fanfics !

(I LOVE this one in particular because it deep dives on the Mikoshi brothers. They're so tragic. And it's also a series, the Yougou series. Check it out !)

(Still part of the Yougou series, but this one in particular aaaaa😭)

Genshin Unlocked: The Cataclysm
SPOILERS AHEAD
The Cataclysm was a global catastrophe that occurred five hundred years ago. Widespread chaos, disaster, and loss ravaged Teyvet, affecting all known nations and even leading to the deaths of several Archons. Although many details of the Cataclysm have been left deliberately vague, including how long it actually lasted, we know for certain at least two catalysts: the Abyss and the fall of Khaenri’ah, of which both are deeply intertwined.

The Abyss and the fall of Khaenri’ah
Khaenri’ah was once renowned as the “pride of humanity” because it was a thriving civilisation built by human innovation and means, without the influence or purview of the gods. It’s implied that the people of Khaenri’ah were suspicious of the gods, in particular the Heavenly Principles; believing them to be alien usurpers who did not belong to this world. Subsequently, Khaenri’ahstarted an elaborate plot to rebel against the gods. It’s unclear if this plot started thousands of years ago, during the Crimson Moon Dynasty, but regardless, their efforts reached its peak under the rule of the Eclipse Dynasty and the last Vinster King, Irmin.
King Irmin sought technological advancement, likely for their revolution, and as such, introduced Khaenri’ah to forbidden knowledge. Forbidden knowledge is described as a kind of “external” and “alien” knowledge, born from the lowest pits of the Abyss. It is extremely devastating to Teyvet’s Light and Human Realms, as evidenced in Sumeru (e.g.: Eleazer and the Withering). Nevertheless, King Irmin believed the Abyss would be their salvation.
So, when the Traveler’s Sibling (the Abyss Twin) descended first, King Irmin and Khaenri’ahns viewed them to be a representative of the Abyss. The Abyss Twin was named heir, and became the Prince/Princess of Khaenri’ah. Sometime later, presumably in an unknown ritual, the Abyss Twin would become “a vessel of unlimited Abyssal power.” At some other point preceding the Cataclysm, Rhinedottir had also gained access to forbidden knowledge, and presumably used it in conjunction with the Art of Khemia to create powerful Abyssal monsters, including Durin, Elynas, and the Riftwolves. For unknown reasons, Rhinedottir’s creations tore Khaenri’ah apart before pouring out and into Teyvet.
It’s worth noting that, while we know these events definitely happened, we are currently unaware of their exact order or even if the Abyss Twins’ ritual and Rhinedottir’s creations were somehow connected.

The Cataclysm in Teyvet
Monstadt
Grand Master Arundolyn and his expected successor, Rostam, led the Knights of Favonius into Khaenri’ah to battle the Abyssal monsters. Rostam died in the conflict, leaving behind his lover, Rosalyne-Kruzchka Lohefalter, who sought vengeance, eventually becoming the Fatui Harbinger, Signora
A corrupted Durin was sent to Teyvet by Rhinedottir, which ultimately lead to Durin’s attack on Mondstadt. Since Rostam’s death, Arundolyn had retired his sword, leaving no one to lead the Knights into battle against Durin. As such, Mondstadters sought the help of the Anemo Archon, who called upon Dvalin. Barbatos and Dvalin eventually defeated Durin in combat
Liyue
Although it is unknown how or why, the Chasm became the epicentre of Abyssal monsters. They poured out of the Chasm, butchering entire swaths of miners. To protect and evacuate them, Morax dispatched the Millelith.
The yaksha, Bosacius, was drawn to the Chasm by the widespread bloodshed, and fought alongside the Millelith
Dunyu Ruins was also severely impacted by the Cataclysm, but the exact details are unknown to us—all that we are certain of is that the denizens of Dunyu Ruins abandoned their city and moved to Liyue Harbor
Inazuma
Makoto, Ei, Mikoshi Chiyo, the Kitsune Saiguu, Reizenbou, and Takamine the Mistsplitter fought the Abyssal threat at Inazuma’s doors. However, even with their combined efforts, Makoto and her allies still faced devastating consequences
Chiyo was devoured by a “beast of sin”, and although she slew the beast, Chiyo was ultimately corrupted as well. The corruption led to her betrayal. Ei was forced to incapacitate her by cutting off her horns and sword him. Chiyo fled, not long thereafter
Saiguu disappeared. The details of her disappearance are unclear, but it’s believed she was “consumed” by the Abyss because the Thunder Sakuras were nearly overwhelmed in their effort to purify the land during the Cataclysm
Reizenbou took Saiguu’s disappearance especially hard, and left Inazuma on a self-imposed exile
Takamine vanished sometime during the Cataclysm, only to be slain many years later by his former lover Asase Hibiki
Makoto presumably died in Khaenri’ah
Sumeru
Irminsul was contaminated by forbidden knowledge
Old Vanarana suffered an assault by legions of Ruin Machines and Riftwolves. The Aranara defended Old Vanarana valiantly, however, the land was left scarred and brutalised from the conflict
Marana’s Avatar formed at some point, and although the Aranara successfully sealed it away, Marana’s Avatar somehow bypassed the seal, and spread the Withering
Abyssal monsters emerged from the Girdle of the Sands, and started rampaging the land. The Pari and Nagarjunites joined forces to push the monsters back. Nevertheless, Egeria was still slain. Greater Lord Rukkhadevata subsequently grew the Harvisptokhm to bind Egeria’s consciousness to the mortal realm in an effort to contain the Abyssal defilement in the area
Greater Lord Rukkhadevata also lost her life during the Cataclysm
Fontaine
Elynas presumably materialised in Fontaine during the Cataclysm, polluting both the land and the sea. The Director of the Narzissenkreuz Institute and various Oceanid confronted the disaster, while Basil Elton, the Vice Director, was ordered to hunt Elynas directly. The Fontaine Armada were almost entirely decimated during the hunt, as they fought through waves of Abyssal sea creatures. Eventually, however, Elynas was defeated
Natlan
The Cataclysm was especially difficult for Natlan, because of all the Seven Nations, their Ley Lines are the most unstable. Such overwhelming Abyssal corruption caused catastrophic damage to the Ley Lines, leading to many people of Natlan resigning themselves to their fate. Nevertheless, the Pyro Archon united the tribes, and sucessfully repelled the Abyss—but at a steep price. The Abyss retreated underground, and remained a threat until the end of the Natlan Archon Quest
Hundreds, perhaps thousands, lost their lives in their effort, including Tenoch and the Six Heroes, who headed to Mare Jivari, a hotspot of Abyssal emergence
Traore, the Children of Echoes, and two Khaenri’ahn soldiers, Zephaniah and Irizar, lured the Abyss into the Sulfurous Veins and sealed it with numerous Shadow Pins
Celestia’s Punishment
Ultimately, Celestia/the Seven claimed victory in their conflict with Khaenri’ah. To punish them for both their loss and for the widespread devastation caused by their tampering with the Abyss, Celestia eliminated the entirety of the Eclipse Dynasty. Pure-blooded Khaenri’ahns, such as Dainsleif and Capitano, were cursed with immortality. Half-blooded Khaenri’ahns or other Khaenri’ahn citizens who were born in other nations but had since relocated were cursed with the Curse of the Wild, transforming them into monsters and hilichurls, such as what happened to Caribert. Unusually, several characters in Genshin Impact have avoided both curses, such as Kaeya and Rhinedottir. The reasons for this are unknown.
Aftermath
In the wake of Khaenri’ah’s fall, the Abyss Twin located the Traveler, who had arrived presumably shortly after the Abyss Twin themselves. Unlike the Twin, however, the Traveler remained unconscious. Hoping to retreat from Teyvet entirely, the Abyss Twin woke the Traveler. In their retreat, the Traveler and the Abyss Twin find themselves in Celestia, where they are eventually confronted and defeated by the Unknown God
Khaenri’ah’s automatons, without Khaenri’ahn leadership, spread all over Teyvet. They were unusually drawn to ruins, and eventually, became known as Ruin Machines.
The Abyss Order and the Fatui were both created as a direct result of what transpired during the Cataclysm
Dainsleif identified the Abyss Order as a worse threat than the Seven, despite his own personal grievances against them, and became their staunch opponent
Pierro sided with the Tsaritsa, trusting in her ability to create a “new world”. As such, he became the Director of the Fatui Harbingers. Capitano would later in his footsteps, eventually becoming known as the First of the Fatui Harbingers
In the wake of the Eclipse Dynasty’s destruction, the Alberich Clan became regents in Khaenri’ah, but were unable to revive the nation to its full glory
As far as we’re aware, Rhinedottir survived the Cataclysm relatively unscathed, and went on to create Albedo

If you have any questions or commentary to add, feel free to share them.

This is me trying to figure out my taste in fictional characters:
The three last characters I were obsessed with were Mikoshi Nagamasa and Jakob Ingold from Genshin Impact and Queequeg from Limbus Company. Running the risk of the 3 other people who know and remember that Mikoshi Nagamasa exists, I will have to explain some stuff...or the entire Venn diagram while I'm at it.
Queequeg:
Likeable: I say she is very likable because the narrative makes she likeable. The narrative sympathises with her.
Jakob Ingold:
An actual villain: Jakob is a villain that the Traveller has to fight and try to stop his plan.
Very unstable: Compared to the other characters on this diagram, he is more prone to emotional outbursts and extreme actions
Mikoshi Nagamasa:
Superior role, but...: he was working for the Inazuma Shogunate regardless and had to bend to their wills.
Doesn't have a proper arc: he is the only character in this diagram not to have a proper story. He was essentially created to be a red herring. At the end of his story, his character development was rolled back.
A bit neurotic: This is a headcanon. However, in game evidence suggests that he was considered paranoid and obsessive.
Queequeg & Jakob Ingold:
Purple: They are both purple
Themes about dissolving: Queequeg’s EGO dissolved into Ahab's, while Jakob was researching a water that dissolved people's wills together.
Subordinate role: They both held subordinate roles - Queequeg was Ahab's harpooner, while Jakob was Rene/Narzissenkreuz's second in command. However, Queequeg had way less power than Jakob since Jakob's subordinate dynamic with Rene/Narzissenkreuz was artificially created by himself. He could have been Rene/Narzissenkreuz's equal or the boss if he wanted, but he didn't.
Two boss fights: We fight each of them twice.
Jakob Ingold & Mikoshi Nagamasa:
From Genshin: They are both human NPCs from the cataclysm era as well.
Unlikable: Although they could be very sympathetic, the narrative introduces Jakob as the villain, and initially, Nagamasa, too. Nagamasa is less liked, probably because he has less of screen time and his personality is insufferable.
Men: Well, they are men. But I do headcanon Nagamasa as transfem when I feel like it.
Abandonment issue:
Eduardo, Jakob's father, was incarnated after attempting to revolt. Basil, Jakob's caretaker, died in a war later. And later, Rene, his dearest, kind of dissolved himself in an experiment.
Nagamasa was an adopted child of the oni Chiyo, but after she went insane, attacked the Shogun, and ran away, there were only him and his adopted brother Michihiro. And then Michihiro ran away, too. And then later, he is essentially forced to kill his retainer.
Motherless: If you count Basil to be Jakob's mother figure, then he is motherless. Motherless is also how you summarise Mikoshi Nagamasa's character in one word.
Mikoshi Nagamasa & Queequeg:
Family issue: Nagamasa had his issue with both his mother and his brother running away. Queequeg ran away from her insane family.
Gnc (Gender non-conforming): You can look at Queequeg can tell how she's gnc. For Nagamasa, it's a headcanon because he doesn't have a design. I just make him super fem (like his mother).
Involves in a ship where one kills the other: Nagamasa was essentially forced to kill Katsuragi, his retainer (and I ship the 2 of them together). It's arguable that Ishmael is responsible for Queequeg's death (Ahab certainly argued so).
Was manipulated: Nagamasa, like the other characters, was deceived by Escher, but he is arguably the least manipulated guy there on account of being paranoid. Queequeg was clearly manipulated by Ahab, that's her entire plot.
Themes of atonement, guilt, filth, and purity: Nagamasa worked his entire life to atone for the act of treason from his mother. He is repeatedly stated to be obsessed with purity. Queequeg has a similar theme with atonement, except it was actually her fault this time.
Queequeg & Jakob Ingold & Mikoshi Nagamasa:
Dead NPCs: They are all dead NPCs
Irrelevant: Varying degree of irrelevance. Here, I mean they won't have further relevance on their respective game. But, for example, Queequeg was extremely relevant in Canto V and had a proper character arc. Jakob was a major villain in the Narzissenkreuz quest line and also inspired another villain from the main quest. Nagamasa was there.
Side characters: They all play supporting roles for at least another character and/or highlight another character's arcs. Jakob is there for Rene. Nagamasa is there for Scaramouche/Kabukimono. Queequeg is there for Ahab and Ishmael. That is not to say they don't have their own story (except for Nagamas/j)
Morally grey: Varying degree. Jakob skirts more to the darker side because he did kill and experiment on a lot of people without remorse. However, he was driven by a genuine desire to save humanity. Queequeg's motives for killing and torturing hundreds of innocents were more selfish and vain, but she regretted it very badly (and in the context of the City, what she did was probably not that bad?) Nagamasa killed one guy. But the guy was really kind and loyal to him. But he also did it to save his own life and his entire lifework of trying to clear his family's name. And the guy also agreed (insisted?) that he kills him. Ironically, Nagamasa has the least fan here.
Water theme: Obvious with Queequeg and Jakob. Speculative for Nagamasa. It depends on whether Hasui Geppaku Futsu (which is associated with the waves) was his mother's sword. Even no, Nagamasa still wrote about it so it kinda counts.
Queer: Neither Ishqueg nor Renekob is canon, but they have a lot of chemistry. Other than that, Ishqueg have their source materials backing them up, while Jakob is theorised to be based on some queer historical figure. And he is also a Ligeia reference exclusively in his relationship to Rene. Nagamasa is there because I ship KatsuNaga and thinks they have sufficient chemistry.
Broken found family: The Pequod can be counted as a found family for Queequeg, and it's broken. Jakob's Narzissenkreuz Institute is also broken. Nagamasa found a family with the Mikoshi. After his mother's treason, it broke. And then, when he found another family at Tatarasuna, it also broke because of Escher. So he lost 2.
Themes about their insignificance: Queequeg is kind of... nothing in Ahab's eyes. To her, Queequeg is just a tool to kill the Whale. Nagamasa lived and died pointlessly. His efforts basically have no lasting consequences at all. Even now, the Mikoshi didn't return to their glorious days, they are mostly forgotten. Jakob (and Rene) tried to save the world with their fucked up ways, but in the end, it's all for nothing because Focalors planned something else already. And also they aren't the Traveler.
Antagonistic: Varying degree. Jakob was straight up a villain. Queequeg fought the Sinners many times because Ahab ordered her. Nagamasa had an unpleasant personality... Well, we all thought he was the villain before the reveal, but he isn't.
Themes about extreme loyalty and dependence: This is their most obvious common trait. Nagamasa is extremely loyal to his mother, and his retainer is loyal to him in turn. Jakob is extremely loyal and dependent on Rene. Queequeg's case is more complicated. She is disloyal to the Middle because she ran away from them. But, at the same time, she was loyal and dependent on Ahab because at that time, she has no one else to lean on.
Has at least 1 viable ship with a master/servant dynamic: Rene/Jakob and Katsuragi/Nagamasa are both ships with the master/servant dynamic. If you count Ahab/Queequeg as a viable ship (even if it's fucked up), then you can count Queequeg in as well.
Has at least 1 non-biological brother: Queequeg is not lacking at all in "Brothers". Nagamasa had Michihiro, even though they might not consider each other brothers anymore. Rene, although never directly referred to as Jakob's brother, is adopted by the same person as him. And if you don't count that, Jakob also saw Carter as his older brother figure.
Involved with a story with themes of obsession: From Jakob obsessively looking up to Rene and worshipping him almost, to Rene himself being obsessed with his way of saving humanity, Jakob's story still is the one least overt about this theme. Queequeg isn't that obsessed, but Ahab and Ishmael very much are. It is also one of the main themes of Moby Dick, her source material. And, obsession is quite literally Nagamasa’s main personality trait.
In conclusion, I like morally grey chatacters. I like those dead NPCs who seem like theirs stories are over, and yet if one is willing to dig more, they would see an improbably interesting backstory and complicated inner lives. I also favour the characters who are extremely loyal and bonus if their loyalty is what makes them less morally upright. I like the themes of atonement and guilt. Codependency is another trope that I find fascinating. Obsession is also a theme that I can relate to. I like angsty relationships like anyone else. And I have a soft spot for familial content.
Anyways, writing this reminds me so much of the days I was obsessed over the Mikoshi family and Mikoshi Nagamasa, specifically. I analysed his dynamics, parallels, and relationships to the characters that actually mattered. Analysed his 5 lines of dialogues. Analysed how he called himself and the people around him. Found a mistranslation (that hasn't been fixed in the game). Checked every place that mentioned him and tried to infer what that meant. Wrote a 100k words fanfic for him.
And, this guy has no coherent character arc. No design, either. Total 5 lines of dialogue. Died before any event of the game.
If I can do that much for a character like that, then I think I can allow myself to be even more obsessed with Queequeg. After all, she was a character that has an arc, proper setup, and proper themes. She has story relevance where she appears. It is actually more reasonable to be obsessed with Queequeg.
