REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 10/02/2024
Noah Kahan’s “Stick Season” is still #1, it’s a short episode, you really probably should skip it - there's nothing of value discussed here... welcome back to REVIEWING THE CHARTS.
Tumblr media
Rundown
This is not a good week. You could call it a stale week, it’s probably accurate, because there’s not much of interest and what is here is mostly utter garbage. Potentially, up there with the worst weeks ever in terms of new arrivals to the UK Top 75, which is what I cover, and speaking of what I cover, notable dropouts are songs exiting said top 75 after five weeks in the region or a peak in the top 40, and this week, we bid adieu to: “Skin and Bones” by David Kushner, “neé-nah” by 21 Savage, Travis Scott and Metro Boomin, “Practice” by Drake, “Pink Friday Girls” and “Everybody” featuring Lil Uzi Vert by Nicki Minaj and finally, “Paint the Town Red” by Doja Cat. One highlight of this dire week is that I’m not really complaining about any of that.
Lewis Capaldi’s “Someone You Loved” returns to #67, what a joy, as well as “Anti-Hero” by Taylor Swift at #62 and “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus at #51. Can’t help but think the GRAMMYs had some influence on these. As for notable gains, we see boosts for Taylor’s “Is it Over Now?” at #68, “MY EYES” by Travis Scott at #65, “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish at #58, “Would You (go to bed with me?)” by Campbell and Alcemist at #52, “Perfect (Exceeder)” by Mason vs. Princess Superstar at #39, “Runaway” by Ye featuring Pusha T at #35, seemingly because well, there may or may not be an album coming because that’s what we needed: more discourse. Then we have “Scared to Start” by Michael Marcagi at #31, “Selfish” by Justin Timberlake at #29 (why are we doing this?), “exes” by Tate McRae at #23, “Alibi” by Ella Henderson featuring Rudimental at #16 (Christ), and we end with two positives at least, as YG Marley and Benson Boone both get their first top 10s with pretty damn good songs, in my opinion: “Praise Jah in the Moonlight” at #9 and “Beautiful Things” at #5, which brings us to that top five, which is otherwise completely the same as last week. Jack Harlow’s at #4, Teddy Swims at #3, Sophie Ellis-Bextor at #2 and for a sixth week, Noah Kahan at #1. You know the song names off by heart by now, and I need some time to let off a deep sigh before rattling off the new songs. Oh, boy, the new songs.
New Entries
#75 - “Out for Love” - Andrew Underberg, Sam Haft and Daphne Rubin-Vega
Produced by Andrew Underberg and Sam Haft
So, Hazbin Hotel was a web pilot by Vivienne Medrano or “ViziePop” that was later picked up by Amazon as a television series this year. It is a musical animated series hence has several soundtrack singles, and given the weak charts and viral nature of the show, some of them have ended up here. I watched the pilot and first four episodes of the series, and found it genuinely quite difficult to stomach - I love adult animation, I love musicals, I actually even like the art style - it was the narrative elements of the show that killed it for me, and this is not a TV review blog, it’s a music review blog. I knew at least one song would debut as the midweek update showed one song at #73, I figured that would be the only song and it could potentially not even appear, so I wrote a very tersely-worded review for that song in particular. It’s a bit… not all that useful anymore, for lack of a better phrase. So I’m largely not going to be covering these. This is from the seventh episode, which I haven’t seen. Song doesn’t make any Goddamn sense to me. Journalism.
#74 - “Thank You (Not So Bad)” - Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Tiesto, Dido and W&W
Produced by Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Tiesto, W&W, Bassjackers and Renze Michels
Okay, if you’re going to credit a grand total of five EDM producers, why not go the full mile and have all eight pick out a lead? Also, I would ask how eight people were involved in producing this if I had any doubts that it wasn’t just an uncredited guy who got paid to sell this lazy sample flip off to people with actual star power. A sample flip of what, you may ask? Sigh… well, if there’s anything vaguely positive I can say about “Alibi” is that it’s influential. This is somehow even lazier, however, so I guess let’s start with some kind of history.
First of all, Dido’s “Thank You” is a perfectly fine, honest song that peaked at #3 in 2001 - “Do You Really Like It?” by DJ Pied Piper & the Masters of Ceremonies rightfully took #1 that week - and whilst I’ve never been a big fan, I can definitely see why the melancholy downtempo ballad resonates with people, and on a bad day, I can definitely throw this on and feel a little hope. This is a bad chart day, and if “Thank You” were to chart in its original form, it could perhaps be a reminder that things are, despite everything, it’s not so bad. So I imagine rap fans will know one of if not both of the uses of this song in popular hip hop, the first being Eminem’s classic “Stan”, probably my second favourite of his. It actually did #1 for one week in 2000, before the original had charted. It’s a stark and incredibly clever recontextualisation of the song that I’m pretty sure has already been discussed as much as possible, there’s a reason why many consider it Em’s crowning moment. Rae Sremmurd, “Lean’s Gone Cold”… maybe not so much. That one didn’t chart, but it’s funny.
Now there is precedent for house remixes of “Thank You”, and whilst I’m willing to consider interpretations and reimaginings of practically any song as any different style, I feel like making “Thank You” more danceable than just a vague nodding of the head skews some of the narrative’s tone? It definitely makes for a weirder, more dissonant listen, and whilst the Deep Dish remix, actually a GRAMMY Award-winning remix, does its best to maintain the atmosphere in its nine minutes, turning “not so bad” into a faint, looping mantra under a constantly developing house groove, to the point where it is a genuinely pretty great house song production wise… it still doesn’t feel like a great adaptation of “Thank You”, just a different product entirely, which makes sense and honestly makes for a better song. It doesn’t try and be “Thank You”, despite not even registering itself as an original song, just a remix of the original still credited solely to Dido. In 2016, European electro house duos Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and W&W made a song called “Arcade”, it’s a loud, compressed smorgasboard of cheap synth sounds made for a live festival setting and being practically unlistenable outside of that context. In 2020, German producers Felix Jaehn and VIZE made a much more conventional and, at least in terms of how much it cribs from the original, a more faithful rendition of “Thank You”, subtitled “Not So Bad”. It’s a flavourless tropical house riff that I think the world would be better off not hearing, it’s like “Thank You” by Dido if she was commissioned to make it by an advertising company looking for a soundtrack to gym commercials.
Somewhere across the line, I guess it must have been Tiesto who said, “What if we made a version of that Felix Jaehn song but basically in the soundfont of “Arcade”?” - the latter even being directly listed as a sample on Genius. I mean, otherwise, I don’t know what the Hell Tiesto is doing here but, generally, you have to be shitting me, right? This is two minutes and 20 seconds constructed out of bits and pieces of songs I may not like but had a lot more purposeful artistic intent to them, if that’s a correct way of phrasing it. This is a vaguely functional crap-shoot molded from genuine song ideas, starting with a gentle singer-songwriter track that actually means a Hell of a lot to millions of people. I’d believe that to many fans, that Rae Sremmurd rendition means a lot to them. What does this mean to anybody?
#63 - “Bandit” - Don Toliver
Produced by ReidMD
I don’t like Don Toliver, really, or Tame Impala for that record, but there’s a level of inherent quality here, right? Don can sing, Tame Impala can construct a vibe and the sample here is “One More Hour” from their 2020 album The Slow Rush, it’s completely serviceable, could make for a good song. So why the sample is rendered in such low quality screeching is beyond me, but hey, maybe a powerful beat could work? Oh, the trap skitter is not only completely rote and overdone, it’s really high in the mix and distracts from the bass, which could really help make this song work? Okay, well, what’s Don doing? Being basically a cartoon character with his flows and incessant ad-libs? Well, that could be fun - oh, he’s comparing himself to Marilyn Manson? Barely rhyming? Catching a good, intense flow only to mumble repeated lines mostly about having sex that make up much of the song, with a tiny verse in the middle? Well, maybe the outro can make up for it - oh, he’s doing a Cookie Monster impression. Welp, all hope is lost.
#55 - “Poison” - Blake Roman, Sam Haft and Andrew Underberg
Produced by Sam Haft and Andrew Underberg
This is an upbeat synthpop jam that soundtracks a sex slavery montage. It sounds like a song by The Weeknd covered by a SpongeBob AI voice model. Next.
#53 - “Loser, Baby” - Andrew Underberg, Sam Haft, Keith David and Blake Roman
Produced by Sam Haft and Andrew Underberg
This was the song that made me turn the fourth episode off in disgust. I had a massive review prepared, covering its treatment of sexual abuse, which probably gave it a higher degree of nuance and generosity than many others are willing to give it, but I’m not compelled to rant about cartoons in this series. I want to write about animation more often but preferably animation I like or actually find compelling. With all respect to those who enjoy it and power to them, Hazbin Hotel was not something I would like to grant any more attention than the brief necessity of my format. Thanks for understanding.
#40 - “Home” - Good Neighbours
Produced by Good Scott and Oli Fox
I was very much willing to give this one a good shake because, I mean, what else do we have? Scott and Fox teased this on TikTok months prior before releasijng this as their official debut single together, after malformed, quickly aborted solo runs a few years ago. Sounds like a recipe for chart success and oh, the song’s terrible. It has a whistle about as charming as the American Authors’ milennial whoops, really insufferably screeching vocal tones that remind me of Passion Pit more than anything - that isn’t really a good thing - and sentimental lyrics about what home means to him, which would be completely serviceable without the stiff, grooveless splodge of grey matter that calls itself a chorus. Oh, and you know those sentimental lyrics? They’re gone by this point, it’s an incredibly manipulative breakup song with some really gross attempts at poetry - “wrap my name across your mouth when I let my feelings down”? Ew, man, Charlie Puth is less contrived than this. Naturally, the song goes nowhere and sadly, that probably won’t be its chart trajectory. Yet, once again, this song is practically unlistenable.
Conclusion
…Don Toliver gets Best of the Week. Somehow. Thanks for reading, I guess? See you next whenever.

speaking of disney child stars, it would have been sooooo slay if they did the jocelyn/dyanne in the same way the media pit the disney girls against each other in the 00s. the whole good girl vs bad girl thing, eg hilary duff vs lindsay lohan, selena gomez vs miley cyrus etc, with the “bad” girl being the one with a sexier image and who was constantly criticised for not growing up “the right way”. the pics from the old set look really y2k too so it would have fit really well, esp as the starting point of the plot is that jocelyn had a very public breakdown after her mother passed away and there’s nothing that the 00s media loved more than a public celebrity breakdown
jocelyn and dyanne could have been costars on a disney show when they were kids so the media compares them constantly and they’re seen as frenemies. dyanne took the zendaya route and people take her seriously whereas jocelyn is the trashy party girl archetype. after her breakdown the public thinks she’s a mess and so the label give her song to dyanne instead
sam levinson WISHES he could write a plot as good as this…..
omg anon it’s like we have one mind bcs i was thinking about something just like this before :ooo yeahhh i think if the show had focused on the dyanne/jocelyn rivalry it would have been super interesting bcs the phenomenon of women being pitted against each other in the music industry is something we all know so i think it would have been fascinating to watch in a series (truth be told - i thought that’s what was gonna go down after dyanne got the offer from the label, since she was already being advertised as the more talented and more stable popstar, so i thought we were gonna see the two being compared even more)
this show is all just wasted potential

Minnesota Twins-Milwaukee Brewers Series Preview
4.2.24-Louie Varland RHP (1-1) 6.30 ERA Vs. Jakob Junis RHP (1-0) 5.91 ERA
4.3.24-Chris Paddack RHP (0-2) 4.73 ERA Vs. Joe Ross RHP (1-1) 4.50 ERA
(2024 Spring Training Stats)
The Twins At A Glance- The Twins took two out of three games from the Royals to start the season. The team headed over to Milwaukee for a pair of games with the Brewers this week. Byron Buxton is off to a good start. He went 3-for-10 with two doubles and three RBI's in Kansas City. Alex Kirilloff also went 3-for-10 with a run knocked in. Royce Lewis will be out at-least a month with a quad strain. Max Kepler still had a sore leg from fouling a ball off his foot on Opening Day. Brooks Lee has been dealing with back spasms and Trevor Larnach had turf toe. Both guys have been out for the Saints. The pitching was good over the weekend as Pablo Lopez and Joe Ryan only allowed a run in their starts. Bailey Ober got knocked around and gave up eight runs over 1 1/3 innings. The Twins bullpen had to cover 6 2/3 innings on Sunday with an off day on Monday. Kody Funderburk threw thirty-four pitches and Daniel Duarte threw thirty-one pitches on Sunday.
The Brewers At A Glance- The Brewers were rained out on Thursday then swept the Mets in New York over the weekend. Milwaukee out-scored New York 14-7 in the three-game series. The Brewers added Gary Sanchez, Rhys Hoskins and Jakob Junis over the winter. Christian Yelich is off to a hot start with a .455 average, one homer, and two RBI's in the first three games. Brice Turang went 5-for-11 over the weekend. Jackson Chourio is living up to his hype with a .417 average. The Brewers traded Corbin Brunes to the Orioles and Brandon Woodruff will miss the year with a shoulder injury. Wade Miley has a left shoulder impingement and Devin Williams has been out with a back injury. Freddy Peralta was solid in his season debut with six innings of work and allowed one run. Colin Rea gave up a run over five innings. Jakob Junis and Joe Ross will make their Brewers debuts in this series.
What To Watch For- The Twins won both games against the Brewers at Target Field last year and the Brewers swept the series at Miller Park in 2023. Louie Varland has never faced the Brewers. Chris Paddack is (0-1) with a 3.94 ERA in three starts against the Brewers. Jakob Junis is (1-2) with a 5.15 ERA in ten games versus the Twins. Byron Buxton and Carlos Correa each have two career homers off Junis. Joe Ross has never faced the Twins. Both teams had a good first series of the year and it's time to see how both starting rotations round out to start the season.

Yanks Avoid Sweep and Being No-Hit, Win Via Walk-Off
NYY vs. MIL
Game 1
RHP Luis Severino got the nod for the New York Yankees against RHP Colin Rea and the Milwaukee Brewers.
The scoring started in the bottom of the third inning with CF Jasson Domínguez hitting a two-run home run off Rea.
DH Aaron Judge and The Martian himself scored, giving the Yankees a 2-0 lead against the Brewers.
youtube
In the top of the fourth inning, SS Willy Adames hit a two-run home run off Severino, tying the score at 2-2.
In the top of the fifth inning, Severino would exit the game in significant pain after just pitching four-plus innings.
After being placed on the injured list the next day, it would be revealed during the last game of this series that Severino suffered a high-grade left oblique strain in that game one start.
Fast forward to the top of the seventh inning, C William Contreras hit an RBI single off reliever Jonathan Loáisiga, scoring 3B Andruw Monasterio.
The Brewers led 3-2.
Later in that inning, 1B Carlos Santana hit an RBI single off Loáisiga, scoring Contreras. The Brewers extended their lead to 4-2.
Next, Adames hit an RBI double off Loáisiga, scoring Santana.
Another insurance run was added to the scoreboard and it was now 5-2 Brewers.
In the top of the eighth inning, Monasterio hit a two-run RBI double off reliever Greg Weissert, scoring PR-CF Joey Wiemer and 2B Brice Turang.
It was now 7-2 Brewers.
In the same inning, Santana hit an RBI single off Weissert, scoring Monasterio. The Brewers extended their lead to 8-2 and won by that score.
Another note to add about this game is that due to the severity of Severino’s injury, he won’t pitch again this season and this offseason would be his walk year.
Game 2
RHP Michael King started for the Yankees versus LHP Wade Miley for the Brewers.
The scoring began in the top of the fourth inning with Adames hitting an RBI triple off King, initially scoring RF Mark Canha.
With 1B DJ LeMahieu making a rare throwing error, Adames scored, too. It was 2-0 Brewers.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, SS Anthony Volpe hit an RBI single off Miley, scoring 2B Gleyber Torres.
The Yankees trailed the Brewers by 2-1.
Later in that inning, 3B Oswald Peraza reached on a fielder’s choice handled by Adames, scoring RF Giancarlo Stanton.
The Yankees tied the score at 2-2.
Fast forward to the top of the eighth inning, LF Tyrone Taylor hit a solo home run off Loáisiga. The Brewers now led by 3-2.
In the same inning, Canha hit an RBI single off Loáisiga, scoring CF-RF Sal Frelick. The Brewers extended their lead to 4-2.
Next, DH Victor Caratini hit a sacrifice fly off Loáisiga, scoring Santana. It was now 5-2 Brewers.
In the top of the ninth inning, Contreras hit a two-run single off a recent call-up and reliever Matt Krook.
The Brewers extended their lead further to 7-2.
Later in that inning, Caratini walked on ball four via reliever Ron Marinaccio with the bases loaded.
This forced a run to cross home plate, scoring Frelick and it was now 8-2 Brewers.
Next, Monasterio received a bases-loaded walk via Marinaccio and it became even more of a laugher at 9-2 Brewers.
This would be the score the Brewers would win by, securing a series win against the Yankees.
Game 3
Ace RHP Gerrit Cole would get a chance to be the losing streak-stopper for the Yankees against RHP Corbin Burnes of the Brewers.
There was virtually no offense in the nine innings of regulation Major League Baseball as well as the 10th inning of this game.
The Yankees were being no-hit by Burnes as well as the Brewers bullpen and Cole on the Yankee side brought his game, pitching seven full innings despite not having his best stuff in his repertoire.
Volpe had a chance to break up the no-hitter and win the game for the Yankees in the bottom of the 10th inning, but Frelick in right field had other plans when he made a game-saving catch for the third out.
It took the Brewers until the top of the 11th inning to push a run – a ghost runner (Caratini) from second base – across home plate.
Taylor hit an RBI single off reliever Nick Ramirez, scoring Caratini. The Brewers were on top by 1-0.
In the bottom of the 11th inning, the Brewers’ combined no-hitter was finally broken up by 3B Oswaldo Cabrera with an RBI double off reliever Joel Payamps, scoring Volpe as the ghost runner from second.
The score was knotted at 1-1.
In the top of the 12th inning, Wiemer hit an RBI double, scoring Santana as the ghost runner. The Brewers once again took the lead at 2-1.
In the same inning, Monasterio hit a sac fly off Ramirez, scoring Wiemer from third base. The Brewers extended their lead to 3-1.
In the bottom of the 12th inning, with Torres at second as the ghost runner, Stanton hit a game-tying two-run home run off reliever Andrew Chafin.
The score was knotted at 3-3.
In the bottom of the 13th inning, C Kyle Higashioka – who came in as a defense replacement for C Ben Rortvedt when Jake Bauers pinch-hit for him earlier in this game – hit a game-winning RBI double off reliever Hoby Milner that scored LF Everson Pereira.
youtube
The Yankees won this game in walk-off fashion by the score of 4-3, salvaging the last game of this series and avoiding a Brewers sweep.
A side note about this game: Domínguez was benched in this game due to right elbow inflammation.
However, as I would find out once the game ended, this inflammation turned out to be a torn UCL in his right elbow.
The rookie CF will not play for the rest of this season and it will be nine to ten months before he is good to go.
As quickly as The Martian invaded MLB, he was humbled and in one sense came back down to Earth.
Maybe the Yankees will see him again in September but in the following year.

Ranked: Hannah Montana — Mamaw vs. Dolly
Tumblr media
So this seemed like a fun one for me to do!  These are two of the most iconic recurring guest stars, so naturally I had to pit them against each other (or, well, pit their episodes against each other).  This competition isn’t particularly serious, but it is a nice excuse for me to talk about some of my favorite episodes on the show.  Like before, I’m going in reverse-order of how much I liked them, or Worst->Best, so I can save the best for last.
“B-B-B-Bad to the Chrome” (Season Three)
Tumblr media
It’s a testament to how awesome Vicki Lawrence is that even in the “worst” episode she’s in, she still brings it and is in many ways the strongest part of it.  This one loses out mainly on writing, and me fucking hating the subplot.  I’m sorry.  “You forgot some really arbitrary timestamp I decided to put on our relationship without telling you, which means you don’t love me” will just never be anything but annoying to me ever, no matter how much I like the couple involved.  Honestly, it was shit like that that made me glad I didn’t do a lot of dating in high school.
The main plot is kind of weak too tbh, but I’m still in some ways fond of it, because it’s very clear that it’s all coming from a place of love.  They replace her car because they love her, and they try to recreate the old crappy car because they love her, and she pretends not to notice because she loves them right back.  The best scenes are the one-on-one interactions between Miley and Mamaw, where you can see how much they understand each other.  It was because of those that I almost bumped this up one… but they weren’t quite enough to sell me on this episode.  Sorry again.
“You Give Lunch A Bad Name” (Season Three)
Tumblr media
This one, again, not a very strong episode, but there are a few reasons I liked this one just a little bit more.  Part of it is I’m a sucker for Miley/Jackson centrics, and they strike such a perfect balance of brother-sister solidarity and sibling rivalry in this: the song in the beginning, the schemes, the mimic fights, them immediately pointing at each other when Mamaw asks them who the “guiltiest grandchild” is.  Another part is that weirdly, Lilly and Oliver seem to have more of their natural chemistry in this episode than they do in the one where they’re actually dating.  Case in point, their little quiet communication to leave in the middle of the siblings’ bickering without having to say a word to each other.
What’s interesting about this one is, Mamaw isn’t necessarily wrong that the kids are gonna take advantage of their dad being gone.  That’s exactly what they’re planning to do.  But then she takes it too far and holds on too hard, treating them like they’re 10 rather than 16 and 18 respectively.  There’s a classic conflict here of teenagers thinking they’re more mature than they really are, versus their family knowing they’re still kids but treating them like outright children instead of meeting them where they are. And I think it’s harder for her to accept they’re growing up than it is for Robby Ray because she isn’t around very much to see it happening.  While she recognizes in the end that they had good reason to be embarrassed, that theme of holding on to how things were because she’s afraid of losing them seems to be a consistent one with her in later seasons.
“I Am Mamaw, Hear Me Roar!” (Season Four)
Tumblr media
First off, I just want to say that I think having a Dolly episode and a Mamaw episode after “I’ll Always Remember You,” and right after each other, was a really smart choice, especially the way they did it.  Dolly can help her embrace what it’s like to be all-celebrity, all the time, and Mamaw reminds her not to forget her family, and how hard that kind of life can actually be. Not just for Miley, but for the people around her.  They just tie really well into that whole, “She’s always had the best of both worlds, but now she’s gotta learn what living without her secret feels like” theme that late stage Season 4 has going for it.
One thing that always strikes me about this episode is how it puts so much of her actions in context, not just in this episode, but retroactively.  Of course Robby Ray forgot to visit her when he was younger and his own music career was in full swing.  Of course she would panic when the same seems to be happening to Miley, when they can’t take one picture or have one tea without Miley getting hounded by her fans, because she doesn’t have Hannah Montana to hide behind anymore. (Of course, I’m not so sure the timeline adds up there, but I’m gonna let that go because of the point it was trying to make.)  Being smacked in the face with Miley’s fame is really a wakeup call for all of them, but that makes Miley’s efforts to make sure Mamaw understands how much she cares all the more sweet.
“Good Golly, Miss Dolly” (Season One)
Tumblr media
I’d initially put “Kiss It Goodbye” here, but I switched them when I realized I was underrating it— that episode was better than I remembered.  But I like this one, too!
This is Dolly’s first appearance and introduction, and she comes in with a bang.  The frou-frou, the flowers, and of course, the infamous camera that kickstarts the conflict of the episode.  Well, sort of— the real conflict is Miley’s confused feelings for Jake Ryan, torn between “falling all over him,” playing hard to get, and not wanting to give him the satisfaction of seeing her vulnerable.  The way it ends up intersecting with Oliver’s subplot of trying to compile a goodbye video for the principal is brilliant, and that sneaking scene?  Just amazing.
Of course, this puts her right back where she started, and she ends up regretting it when it’s seemingly too late for her and Jake, but her ripping up the flowers is funny, and then Dolly gets to show off her singing chops a little when she and Robby Ray cheer her up in a really sweet scene.  Beyond that, the subplot is… fine.  It’s pretty forgettable, but I liked it okay.  It’s not frustrating like some of the subplots in previous episodes on this list, but not quite as awesome as…
#3: “Kiss It Goodbye” (Season Four)
Tumblr media
And with that, we’ve cracked the top three!  This one surprised me upon rewatch.  I knew I liked it, I just didn’t know how much I liked it until I saw it again. I think part of it might be me attributing some of my own feelings about Cancel Culture as a whole and how that’s affected us for the worse overall, celebrity or not, as well as some meta-significance to Miley’s career, both at the time and afterwards.  But let me get into the episode itself rather than getting on those tangents.
Miley starts off being a little careless with her image… but this is understandable, as she’s used to having her privacy, and living without it’s gonna take some getting used to.  Dolly has this legendary entrance in a personalized helicopter, complete with a pink ladder.  She uses her own know-how about fame to help Miley navigate the paparazzi, reassures her after a brutal interview with Colin Lassiter, and then encourages both her and Robby Ray to sing with her at her performance.  While both of them object at first, Robby Ray eventually gets up the courage to go… which is the push Miley needs to get past her fears and get back on the horse herself.
Beyond the main plotline and overall message that I love, it’s really quotable, and has one of the best subplots this show has ever had.  Rico goes practically catatonic because the Stewarts, a family of “idiots” he looks down upon, fooled him, an evil genius with an ego that can’t handle that.  I also like that we see Lilly’s compassionate side coming back in this episode in both plotlines, it’s the one thing I felt season 4’s Lilly was lacking overall, and it was fun to see her point her sharp tongue towards herself for once this season.  And of course, Jackson enjoying Rico’s suffering, but ultimately being the one to help him out of it was perfect, and bringing back the choir from earlier that season was even better.
#2: “I Will Always Loathe You” (Season Two)
Tumblr media
Before anyone gets mad that this wasn’t my #1 pick, let me just say for the record that this episode is AWESOME.  Mamaw and Dolly’s rivalry is so explosive and they play off each other so beautifully, and the culmination of that into the “Granny Smackdown” is so well-done.  And look, yeah, I know that there were stunt doubles and probably a mannequin or two involved, but I don’t care, it’s a fantastic scene.  I love Robby Ray trying to make peace and ending up getting dragged into it, I love Hannah Montana awkwardly trying to salvage the situation, and ultimately breaking them up, and I love Jackson and Lilly scarfing down popcorn and watching the whole thing unfold from home.
If I had to pick which one of these episodes was the funniest, it would be this one, no contest.  The subplot here is great too; simple yes, but I think the simplicity works in contrast to just how much is going on in the main plot, and Oliver’s shame at his own involvement in the end?  Wonderful.  The contrast between the two women picking clothes for Miley’s award show, and the decision to genuinely make up after seeing how much it hurt Miley were executed beautifully too.  We don’t get the sense that they’re going to be BFFs, but I do like that the ending scene shows promise, that they’re at least capable of getting along, when they want to.   As Miley says, “You’re trying.  That is all I’ve ever wanted.”
So yeah, this episode?  Amazing.  But… not quite my favorite.
#1: “Grandmas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Play Favorites” (Season One)
Tumblr media
Remember when I said I’m a sucker for Miley/Jackson centrics?  Yeah.  This episode was probably where all of that began for me.  (Also the beginning of my feelings about Jackson going from “oh he’s pretty funny” to “LET ME LOVE YOU,” but I’ll try to keep my stanning to a minimum here.)
We start off with what appears to be a fairly straightforward story.  Hannah Montana is meeting the queen.  Jackson has a volleyball game.  Mamaw’s coming to visit, and she’s critical of Robby Ray, particularly his eating habits, she’s tepidly nice to Miley, but treats her as an afterthought, and she heaps praise and adoration and attention onto Jackson by the bucketload.  On the surface, it seems that this is about Mamaw unfairly favoring Jackson over Miley.  Right up until this happens:
“She’s gonna insult the queen and ruin my command performance all because of her ‘little Jackson.’  It’s always about you!”
“Me?!  Well, it’s never about me!  Everything in this family revolves around you!”
One comeback, and the tables are turned.  Yes, Mamaw hasn’t treated Hannah Montana getting to sing for the Queen of England with the respect and admiration it deserves.  But Robby Ray and Miley haven’t been treating Jackson with the respect and admiration he deserves.  When Miley snarks that Mamaw would rather go to Jackson’s volleyball game than her performance, she responds with, “Well, if I don’t, who will?  I don’t see either one of you heading for the door.”  She doesn’t ignore Miley because she loves her any less.  In an ironic turn of events, the reason she ignores Miley isn’t about her at all.
I do like, though, that the episode doesn’t treat this as “two wrongs make a right.”  Mamaw still apologizes for making Miley feel “invisible,” like her accomplishments don’t matter, like she doesn’t care.  Jackson feeling invisible because his dad and his sister and the whole rest of the world treat him that way, doesn’t excuse Mamaw treating Miley that way.  And the fact that all of it’s unintentional, and that the neglect is coming from someone who does, genuinely, love that person, doesn’t erase the harm it causes. This is a lesson for both of them, and Miley comes away with a greater understanding of what her brother goes through.
There is still a part of me that wishes this had gotten elaborated on more in the show?  Not that Jackson doesn’t bring up the favoritism issue multiple times afterward, but it’s not treated seriously very often after this, considering how often it comes up.  It saddens me to think that, for all the efforts they make in this episode to make sure they’re there for Jackson in the end, Miley and Robby Ray still end up falling into the same patterns with Jackson as the show goes on, and worse.   I can’t help but think this pattern of neglect and Jackson’s deterioration into “the family failure” are related, and while I don’t need every single episode to treat it as A Big Deal, the truth is, it is a big deal, and I wish the show had been more consistent in actually taking it seriously.
Tumblr media
So that’s my list!  In the end, I think we can all agree Mamaw and Dolly are both pretty iconic characters, and made the show all the richer for being on it.  I’ve loved getting a chance to look at their episodes again, and make sure to stay tuned for my next Ranked post for this series, where I may be talking about another iconic recurring character on this show….  (Hint: one of these episodes is on that list, too.)  Until next time!

sorry for cursing (blessing?) your inbox with this but i just found out that nicklas 'murder eyes' backstrom listens to cardi b and follows taylor swift on spotify and now the image of him blasting wap and love story through earbuds while glaring at nothing in particular won't leave my head
LISTEN. Despite its effects on my physical and mental well-being, I am very obviously way too aware of everything the Caps get up to. I’m following all kinds of randos on instagram, paying for multiple sports subscription websites (man you have no idea how much that kills my cheapskate heart to do), and rooting through the trash cans at the MedStar Capitals Iceplex rink on a regular basis like some kind of feral raccoon. And I STILL cannot keep up with the absolute fucking rollercoaster that is Nicklas Backstrom's taste in music. Dude is all over the place.
-In his first interview as a Capital, he proclaimed his favorite bands were U2 and The Sounds, a Swedish indie rock band.
-Sometime in 2010, he picked Miley Cyrus over Taylor Swift in a “This or That” video that I sadly failed to save. (RIP most of the Caps NHL videos from the Young Guns age, those were so stupid and so great. You have things like the entire team arguing over pirates vs. ninjas)
-In late 2010, he refused to dance “in front of [the HBO 24/7 Road the Winter Classic cameras]” when the Caps finally snapped their eight game losing streak and all started fistpumping to “Beat Dat Beat” by DJ Pauly D, which implicates he HAS danced to Beat Dat Beat. Just not in front of cameras.
-Back in 2013, behind the scenes at a Bauer commercial shoot, he randomly sang “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” by James Taylor.
-In late 2015, the Caps Breakaway Booklet had “S.O.B.” by Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats as his favorite song.
-In an early 2016 Caps Breakaway Booklet, we got a massive influx of Backstrom musical taste, where he chose the Backstreet Boys over NSYNC, and Katy Perry over Taylor Swift, and said his most played musician/band was Axwell & Ingresso (of Swedish House Mafia).
-In late 2016, he was still into Swedish House Mafia. Hooray for a brief moment of consistency.
-2018 was a big year. At the Stadium Series post-game locker room victory scene, you can see him laughing in the background to “Dancing Queen” by ABBA, though that’s not really just him because the entire goddamn team loves that song.
-In May of 2018, one of the NHL LiveWire Best of 2018 Playoffs Mic’d Up segments caught him singing Viva Las Vegas as the Capitals prepared to take on the Golden Knights in the Final.
-And of course, the many, many, many, many, many times he sang Queen’s “We Are The Champions.”
-And not being done yet, in June of 2018, one of Andre Burakovsky’s greatest accomplishments was sharing video of Nicke singing karaoke of Han tog av sig sin kavaj, or “An Evening in June” by Lasse Berghagen.
-For the Caps Halloween party in 2018, he was around while several of his teammates murdered “Piano Man” and “Don’t Stop Believing” though his own participation could not be confirmed.
-In 2019, we all remember the shock and awe when he decided on Whitesnake’s “Here I Go Again,” the 1987 version, as his goal song, a song he ‘remembers from his youth’, apparently. “I think it’s cool, but, yeah, I don’t care too much,” Backstrom said. So you say, sir. So you say.
-Inside the 2020 playoff bubble, he was caught singing “Work It”, a remix of a Jay Sean song by Regard, as well as busting out some prime dance moves.
-This past December in 2020, his favorite song was “All I Want for Christmas” by Mariah Carey, though admittedly he was specifically asked for his favorite Christmas song.
-And now, we have him jamming out to WAP and Love Story. What a man. What a champion. May his utter randomness continue for years to come.
(PS I do not actually root through trashcans, I promise. I did once come real close to accidentally flashing Roman Hamrlik during warmups but that’s another story.)

The Twins At A Glance- The Twins keep on padding their lead in the American League Central. They took two out of three games from the Pirates and have a six-game lead in the division. Dallas Keuchel threw 6 1/3 perfect innings before Bryan Reynolds doubled off him in Sunday's game. The team has talked about Byron Buxton playing in center field when he returns. His return will be after a rehab assignment and sometime in September. Joe Ryan will likely start another game for the Saints before returning. Brock Stewart has been throwing off flat ground from 90 feet lately. Donovan Solano is hitting .405 in August with three doubles. Max Kepler has five homers and nine RBI this month. Pablo Lopez has been dominant in August. He has given up a run over twenty-five innings in four starts. Caleb Thielbar has a 2.45 ERA in August. Emilio Pagan has given up a run over 7 1/3 innings of work this month.
The Brewers At A Glance- The Brewers had an up-and-down road trip. They swept the White Sox in Chicago then got swept by the Dodgers in Los Angeles. The Rangers swept them this past weekend in Arlington. The Brewers traded for Carlos Santana, Mark Canha, Andrew Chafin at the trade deadline. Jesse Winker will start a rehab assignment at A-Ball this week. He is trying to return from a back injury. Tyrone Taylor is on fire lately with a .342 average and nine RBI in August. Christian Yelich is hitting .270 with eight knocked in this month. The Brewers starting staff has a 4.11 ERA, which eleventh-best in baseball. Freddy Peralta has a 1.82 ERA in four August starts. The Milwaukee bullpen is a little bit better with a 3.83 ERA, which ranks tenth in MLB. Devin Williams has allowed a run over his last 15 2/3 innings of work. Joel Payamps is having a solid season with a 1.88 ERA with 65 strikeouts over 57 1/3 innings of work.
What To Watch For- The Twins swept a two-game series against the Brewers in mid-June. The first game featured that great Carlos Correa walk-off homer when the Twins were dead in the water. The Brewers swept the Twins in the last series at Miller Park last July. Bailey Ober gave up two runs over six innings earlier this year against the Brewers. Wade Miley is (1-0) with a 4.18 ERA in five games against the Twins. Kenta Maeda is (3-2) with a 2.54 ERA in eight starts against Milwaukee. Corbin Burnes is (2-1) with a 2.96 ERA in five career starts versus the Twins. He has thirty-seven strikeouts over 24 1/3 innings in those starts. This will be an interesting series for the Twins, who play another division leading team.

Needless to say, Cyrus was pretty excited to receive a compliment from Stefani, writing, "When my hero's [sic] tweet me I get horny." She then offered to sing for the bride and groom on their big day.
"ALSO @gwenstefani @blakeshelton I'll be your wedding singer! Cyrus tweeted. "I promise to be on my best behavior. Or worst. whatever you want! It's your special day! Cheers to loving you both almost as much as you love each other!"
While it's unclear whether Stefani will actually take Cyrus up on her offer, she seemed to appreciate the gesture, replying, "Thanks puppy gx."
Shelton proposed to Stefani in Oklahoma last October. "I walked in and my son was, like, sitting right by this, like, fireplace and Blake basically was, like, getting down on his knees to do a fire and he goes, 'Hey, can you look in that cabinet over there and get me a fire starter?'" the mother of three—who shares sons Kingston, 14; Zuma, 12; and Apollo, 6, with ex-husband Gavin Rossdale—recalled to Kelly Clarkson in December. "So, I opened the cabinet and there was, like, a ring in a box and I was like, 'Ah! What? Are you serious?'" The major milestone came about five years after the couple first started dating. As for when the two will tie the knot, Stefani told Jimmy Fallon in January they had no immediate plans because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. "It's like, 'Blake, why couldn't you have done it before?'" she quipped. "Now we can't have a wedding with the pandemic. It's like sitting around going, OK, drag it out more!" But one thing is for sure: Stefani can't wait to marry the 44-year-old country music singer. "He's just such a good guy," she told Today that same month. "He's one of the most generous human beings and down to earth. It all sounds generic, but it's just so true. He's so gifted and so unique and talented and he really just is my best friend. And I feel just so excited that I have someone in my life that I now I have a chance, at, like, happiness, you know what I mean, for a long time to come."
