Either I'm seeing things because of how my YGO au fanfic is going or Mr. Kazuki Takahashi was a god damn genius in disguise.
Tumblr media
Ok here me out folks. It's about Bakura and his name, the potential meaning behind it and how it could potentially NOT be some random name the creator came up with on a whim. I promise I'll be quick. So we break his name into three syllables with how its often pronounced in the series.
Ba-Ku-Ra.
Anyone who knows just the absolute basics of Ancient Egyptian mythos knows that Ra is one of the names of the Sun God. One of the most important gods of Egypt as he commanded the very power of the sun and the prosperity it brought to Egypt by bringing daylight every time he rode his barge. He was one of the most popular gods in the naming conventions of a King's "Horus name" spanning several dynasties. He was essentially the God King of King's. The word Ba; while just a pinch more complex for those just beginning to look into Egyptian lore means soul/to be endowed with a soul. Are you all starting to put the puzzle together? Good cause there's one more lil tid bit left. Which brings us to Ku. When pronounced by the series characters it gives a 'khu' sound. Bah-khu-ra. Now are you ready for the drop? Khu translates to "flame" from Ancient Egyptian. Now put that all together and you roughly get this. "Endowed with the flaming soul of Ra."
Personal names were extremely important in Egyptian culture as they had great meanings or significance, often revealing what god someone believed in and/or their aspirations. Someone clearly gave this kid a passionate name during his era hoping he'd accomplish great things only for him to trash that hope because of a tragedy. He STILL went on to achieve great feats but they were for all the wrong (right in his mind) reasons.
Tumblr media
And then came Ryou's family and the rest is in the text. Thanks for coming to my ted talk. I'll let you all stew on this. :v If this was already all figured out then please disregard my asinine assumptions because I have been outside of the fandom for years and have only been recently reminded of my love for the series. (But wait! Theres another one! Round Two of a potential meaning behind Bakura's name. )

Yeah, Yugioh is my current new hyperfixation lmao. Meant to illustrate a baby version of TK Bakura being ultimately a pawn in the long run for Zorc but honestly imma leave this up to people’s interpretation, since I think this fits both TK Bakura and Ryou.
Also, the way I’m distinguishing them in my mind is: that Yami Bakura is a part of TK’s soul held together with fragments of Zorc; TK Bakura is the version of Bakura that is both the actual dark half of Bakura/the actual Bakura personality without Zorc’s influence; Ryou Bakura is our Bakura, the modern day incarnation of the mostly light portion of TK’s soul.
Also, drawing eyes and messing with procreate effects is pretty fun

Idea for a new Yugioh Archetype:The millennium wielders: each monster and spell is based on one of the millennium items and their respective owners. The monsters effects reflect their item's power, the personality of the character, and the ability of their boss monster/main card's effect. also i'm no good at stat lines so just go with context clues as to what monsters are stronger than others also * means extra deck monster
The millennium Puzzle
The Light Magician: 4 star light spellcaster monster. It's effect is that once per turn, it can throw itself in between one of your opponent's effects/attacks and your own monsters. if this happens, no battle damage occurs also you can special summon one incomplete ruler
The Incomplete Ruler: 6 star dark spellcaster monster: once per duel, you can declare the name of an opponent's monster, both this card and that monster are banished
*The True King: 9 star dark spellcaster. Cannot be normal summoned or set, must be special summoned by the spell card Balance the Scales(That's coming later) and both the light magician and the incomplete ruler must resolve their effects. Once per turn, the owner can skip their normal draw phase and instead search their deck for any spell card(Heart of the cards bitch). If this happens, skip your battle phase
The Millennium Ring
the Innocent Heart: a 2 star light fiend monster, once per turn you can use one of your opponent's card's effects. if this happens, destroy this card and summon one Vengeful Thief (Change of heart lite)
The Vengeful Thief: 6 star dark fiend monster. you can pay 200 life points, and if you do, you can take any spell or trap card from your opponent's graveyard
*The Corrupted Heart: 8 cannot be normal summoned or set, must be special summoned by Balance the Scales. If this card stays on the field for 5 turns while never leaving the board, you win the duel
The Millennium Rod
the Lonely Tombkeeper: 1 star dark earth monster. once per turn, you can deflect one attack made on this card to another monster(poor Rishid)
The Vengeful Tombkeeper: level 4 dark earth monster, once per turn you can take one of your opponent's cards, equip it to this card for no effect, once this effect happens twice, immediately tribute all 3 cards to special summon one Mad Tombkeeper
Mad Tombkeeper: Level 8 dark earth monster. This card's atk/def matches the life points of it's owner. If it is destroyed or removed from play in any way, special summon one Lonely Tombkeeper
*The Tombkeeper's Heir: Level 8 light earth monster. Must be special summoned by Balance the scales. Once this card is destroyed, no graveyard effects can be activated for either player
The Millennium Eye
The Mournful Creator: a level 1 dark fiend monster. Once per turn this monster can select another monster from your opponent's side of the field and epuip it to itself to gain it's atk/def. if this card is attacked, destroy the eqqipped card instead. It can tribute the equipped monster to revive a monster from the graveyard. these effects cannot be activated on the same turn
The Millennium Necklace
Your Fate is Sealed. Spell card. Your opponent reveals the top 10 cards of their deck. Place them back in the deck in the same order
The Millennium Key
Key to Everything. Spell card. Look at your opponent's deck. select any number of cards. pay 1000 LP to banish each one
The Millennium Scales
Balance the Scales. Ritual spell. pay 1000 life points to special summon any monster from the extra deck that has an inferior version of it in the graveyard

So I've read....several....YGO fics now about - bare with me- the whole hikari/yami bond. How wielders of the Millennium Items are so seeped in darkness/the shadows are corrosive that modern-day reincarnations need/go searching for a light balance to help them control the power.
I don't mind the trope, and I get where it came from and why pairs include YBakura/Ryou and YMalik/Malik, but if one were to do it right...wouldn't the 'yami' side of the pair be these people? Atem court, who wielded the items in Ancient Egypt?
Tumblr media
Kinda aching for a fic now where Isis goes looking for a partner to help her manage visions. Where Mahad finds a partner to lighten up and learn to take a break. Where Aknadin's power hungry nature is a result of the eye talking to him, but a partner talks him down and keeps him calm. Where Set turns his focused mind onto pleasing his bonded instead of using the rod to get his way in business deals.
IDK, just have a fanfic craving now. Does such a thing exist?

What's in a name Round 2!
Tumblr media
You thief king freaks ready? Because we're back for round two of potential namesplaining the meaning behind Bakura's name! (Round one can be found here.)
Now you may be wondering; 'Ravi why another one? The first was already too good!" That is because my dear friends that the actual 'ku' translations are in the back of the second book of my most gloriously THICK translation tomes and that the Egyptian Alphabet has two sections of different 'K' starting words.
So quick summary:
Ba means Soul/Endowed with a soul.
Ra: one of the names pointing to the most famous of Sun Gods favored to represent Egyptian's King's.
Now with the refresher out of the way let me reveal to you the official * translation of 'ku'. It means "move".
Now in my years of amateur translating I've discovered that a lot of conjunction words have no direct translation into ancient Egyptian. The Egyptians had such a way with being able to smash words with no connecting verbiage and be like "ah yes this man is an amazing smith of gold and silver making the finest jewelry" while using like 3-5 words In Ancient Egyptian when talking to someone about this smith and their conversation buddy going "I know the smith of which you speak!" in two words.
So what does this new possibility with "move" bring us to?
"Endowed with a soul to move Ra."
This as equally a powerful name as before as it suggests once again that someone had great hopes for our poor little ball of suffering and despair that they expected him to become an notable and renowned member of society. It highlights the notion that Bakura was supposed to do such amazing things that it would move the Sun God himself to praise his accomplishments.
But once again, tragedy wins the day and completely dashes the dreams of the person who gave this vengeful little mew mew his name. Enjoy the food and the possibility for your own little head canons.
(also please forgive me I'm reposting this as its own separated post because I forgot how tumblr works.) * Ku actually has several different meanings but "Move" makes the most sense if Kazuki Takahashi truly planned out his name an understood the message it could give.

Okay, I'm not a Monster High fan, but consiser this:
The girls are going on a field trip to Domino City, and while they're walking around and seeing the sights, they bump into Yugi Moto and his friends.
As the two groups get to know each other, the Millennium Puzzle flashes, causing Atem to take over and ask, "CLEO? IS THAT YOU?"
Speaking as someone who once had her monster sona love YGO and also did some MH OCs based on duel monsters, I'd pay fully to see this crossover.

i got that fictional evil man stuck in my head again after years of barely thinking about him
need him in ways that would result in me going to every religion's hell all at once causing a rip in the fabric of reality
this is an unfortunately normal occourance for me with a multitude of fictional characters
