Marvel AU - Monster (or coward?)

Characters: Liane Felton, Loki Laufeyson, Sylvie Laufeydottir
Features: Ethan Lensherr, Rochelle Romanoff-Felton and some characters from Liane's past
IB: Monster by Imagine Dragons, Avengers (2012)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
'Ever since I could remember
Everything inside of me
Just wanted to fit in,'
"We need to get out of here, this building isn't stable!"
"Funny, I was about to say that about your mental state!" Ethan joked, holding back debris as Liane ran for safety. The battle of New York was raging as heroes ran left and right trying to get STARK staff members away from the tower in a hurry.
"You're cute. Come on, I don't wanna drag you out from underneath rubble."
"Go, I'll hold it off until everyone's safe."
Liane nodded and ran towards the exit but as she ran through what she thought was the door to outside she found herself inside a box that seemed to be made of pure gold. When she turned around the door was gone and she was entirely surrounded by walls of gold, from floor to ceiling. Liane growled, her fists balled as her anger rose.
'If I told you what I was
Would you turn your back on me?
And if I seem dangerous
Would you be scared?'
"Dammit Loki or whatever, let me out!"
A dry chuckle echoed through the hollow space, clearly enjoying this.
"My my, Miss Felton. You forget yourself. That's hardly the way a polite young lady would address her father..."
"What?"
Liane turned to follow the sound and saw her father before her, standing in her family home with her, her surroundings now resembling her family's dining hall. She knew it was magic but she could hear the ticking grandfather clock on the floor, she could feel the heat from the roaring fire, she could smell the sharp scent of the lillies on the dining table and the hairs on her neck stood straight up as she heard the unmistakable voice.
Tumblr media
"Come on little lady, say you're sorry and give me a smile."
"I won't fall for your tricks! That's not my father!"
"How dare you, you insolent girl!" Her father snarled, leaning in to hit her, booze on his breath.
"I'm not scared of you, your stupid magic can't hurt me, you're gonna have to try harder than that if you want to hurt me, Dumb and Dumber."
'I get the feeling just because
Everything I touch isn't dark enough
That this problem lies in me.'
The image of her father melted away and suddenly she was in her childhood bedroom and the scent of nail polish hung in the air as someone approached her, someone looming over her by miles. Then she saw his eyes and his wicked grin and felt her heart race. It was Quentin. She felt so much younger in his gaze, so much smaller and so naive. It stung her eyes seeing him like that before her, as if she'd never even left.
Tumblr media
"Little Sister...myself and the boys want to play a little game and we need a damsel in distress."
"You're a liar, you always were!"
"What? We simply want to rescue the pretty princess but you will have to get in the boat and let us tie you up. But don't worry! We'll rescue you. Eventually."
"Rot in hell, Quentin!"
"Have it your way..."
Liane's eyes stung with tears as her eyes changed colour.
"Stop it, stop it Quent!"
"Awwww baby's crying! Look at the baby crying!"
"YOU SHUT YOUR MOUTH QUENTIN OR I WILL BURN YOUR STUPID HEAD!"
'Can I clear my conscience
If I'm different from the rest
Do I have to run and hide?'
The illusions faded as she was transported back into the box.
"Now there's the Felton I was told about..."
"You could do so much if you weren't so pathetic and predictable all the time..."
"Who ever heard of a hero that can burn you alive?"
Tumblr media
"You can both shut up! I changed! But you...you never will."
"Shame. We were really getting somewhere for a minute there. Shall we?"
"Go on then."
The room melted away all over again and now Liane saw a place she'd tried to forget. A room she wished she'd never entered. Seeing a face she never wanted to see again. And hearing that voice that haunted her days and nights ever since she put him away.
'I never said that I want this
This burden came to me
And it's made it's home inside,'
"Guten tag, frauline...."
"Edmund..."
"Awww no pet name this time? Aw you are shaking like a leaf. Would you like my coat?"
"You stay away from me!"
"But why? You knew this was happening, und you never said no to it before. You befriended those girls, you bought them the drinks, you made them your friends all happy, and you let me take them away..."
"I was drunk! You always made sure of that, you filthy monster!"
Tumblr media
"Nein! Nein, I am not the only monster here. You were, how you say, complicit in the crimes? You could have said no. You could have said you wanted no part in my plans. But you were just so desperate to be loved and adored that you turned a blind eye! All those innocent, naive girls! The blood of those girls is ON YOUR HANDS ALONE! You, are the true monster, Frauline."
'A monster, a monster
I've turned into a monster
A monster, a monster
And it keeps getting stronger.'
Every wall started to reflect just Liane's reflection back at her but each one was different. Her childhood, her teens, her eyes bright purple in all of them, each reflection whispering the same word over and over again as the word started to ring in her head like a death toll.
Tumblr media
Monster.
Monster.
Monster!
"ENOUGH!" Liane screamed as the room was consumed by flames, the reflections all melting and the illusions shifting in a jarring fashion from Edmund Zola, to Quentin, to Milton and then back to Loki, who was grinning from ear to ear.
"We finally broke her...told you it was easy."
"You were right, turns out if one's heart is so blackened and bruised, then it won't be tricky to turn it darker."
"I'm not a monster!"
"Oh really? Monsters are born from anger, pain and hatred. Monsters act without thought. Monsters are ruthless. And what does that make you? A monster? Or a coward?"
"I'll take coward over monster any day, and for the record I was tricked!"
Tumblr media
The two Lokis laughed, holding their stomachs as tears rolled down their cheeks as if Liane had just told the funniest joke.
"Were you now? So you lashing out at your father, was because of a trick?"
"You hurting your brothers, that was the fault of a trick?"
"You turning on Edmund and testifying against him, all because you were tricked? No my dear sweet monster, you knew exactly what you were doing. That rage, your fire, you deliberately took that rage and damaged them.
Tumblr media
"Scarring your father's face, burning your brother's hair, and don't forget that scar running down Eddie's chest, right over his heart. That was all you. That was the monster. And it's getting stronger. But the longer you hide it with this...hero act? It'll get murderous. It will hurt people you care about. That boy you like? Your precious cousin? Your new friends who just started to trust you? They'll all be ashes on the ground. And you'll be painted as a villain. Just like us."
Loki and Sylvie approached, as Liane looked up at them, tears in her eyes as Loki grabbed her chin harshly.
"Shhhh it's alright little Mutant, it's very simple. Either wait until your actions destroy everyone you love, or give in to us and follow the future rulers of Asgard."
"We could make your our little princess. Put a pretty crown on your golden curls. Keep you in a lovely little box where you won't hurt anyone back on Asgard. And all you'll have to do is just prance about and play dress up, ride on your very own pegasus, we'll make you your own boyfriend or girlfriend to play with, all day long. Or....you and your precious little team die. Either by your hands, or ours. Your choice, Princess."
Liane looked around her and saw her team through the confines of the box she was trapped in. All of them fighting tooth and nail to take out aliens and get the people to safety. All things she would have scoffed at a year ago. She saw Ethan, doing everything he can to help the citizens get away. Rochelle, fighting aliens left and right even as she's injured. Her team doing whatever it takes to save the world. They were better off without her.
Tumblr media
'I'm only a man with a candle to guide me
I'm taking a stand to escape what's inside me,'
Liane hung her head and looked up at the Lokis, resigned to her fate.
"Do what you like. But don't hurt my friends. Lock me up, tease me, play with me, whatever. But you don't touch them. Please." There was shame in her eyes but Liane had decided she was better off a coward than a monster. Loki nodded his approval.
"Glad you came to your senses, Little Princess. They didn't need you anyway. Sylvie?"
Sylvie wrapped chains around Liane's neck and wrists, leading her to a portal as a voice rang out, beyond the box, from the outside. Liane was barely paying attention when it hit her ears. And a smile spread on her face as it repeated. And she could see outside the box his big green eyes, his dark hair and the concern and worry in his face as he shouted across the battlefield. Ethan was calling to her.
"LIANE!"
"Silly boy, come on pet, we've built a cage just for you."
"Shame."
"I beg your pardon?"
"I said, shame. Cause your pet just remembered what freedom tastes like!"
The entire box was set ablaze as Lianes eyes glowed, her chains sizzling to dust as she approached the two Mischief deities.
"Turns out I can be both. I can be the daughter of a sleazy businessman and a hero. The sister of a disgusting politician and an Avenger. The ex fiancée of the leader of HYDRA, and the girl about to kick. Your sorry. Asses!"
The box crumbled away to nothing as Liane approached the two co-conspirators with fury in her eyes, her fists aflame.
"You'd better keep fighting cause I'm gonna make damn sure you go back where you came from AND YOU NEVER COME BACK!" Liane roared as airborne fire seemed to burst from her lungs and out of her mouth, sitting the pair ablaze as they disappeared in a poof of magic.
As she managed to find her bearings a hand reached and squeezed hers tightly. It was Rochelle's, and her bright blue cousin was smiling.
"Let's end this fight."
"Together."
And the two fighting Feltons rushed back into the fray, a new sense of courage now fostered in Liane's bruised and blackened heart, slowly starting to rise to reflect on her face. Maybe the past wouldn't define her forever. And just maybe, she would get through this and move on. But not today. That battle was for another time, in another place. Probably in a doctors office somewhere. Monster, coward, hero was starting to sound pretty good from where Liane was standing.
Hope you enjoyed!

W.B Obbly’s Obelisk Observer Society @lyndwyrm0 (Ghost Post)
The Obelisk acts a boundary mark for Southsea, but also marks the site of John Felton’s Gibbet replaced in 1782, over a century after Felton assassinated the Duke of Buckingham (George Villiers) in 1628.
The ghosts of Felton is said to haunt the Clarence pier area where the Gibbet once was, as his heart and hook of the Gibbet where rumoured to be held within the obelisk. However his ghost, and the ghost of Villiers, is also said to frequent the site of the murder itself. Ye Spotted Dogge, the site where Villiers supposedly shouted ‘VILLAIN!!!’ Before being stabbed to death. Felton then is said to have gone for a drink and hidden in a cupboard, while every one outside began conspiring that the was some larger scheme or that the French had done it. But proud of his work Felton emerged and declared that he had killed the duke. other theories suggest that the blaming of a Frenchman was misheard as Felton and so thinking he’d been rumbled, revealed himself.
The duke was a bit of a marmite figure, lots of poetry after the fact swings heavily on very pro Felton as the man’s man hero of the people or very anti Felton. John Milton’s own teacher, Alexander Gill the Elder, had his ears chopped off and was fined £2000 for drinking to Felton’s health and remarking that Villiers would be joining King James in hell.
Felton is also said to haunt the nearby Felton House next door, however expert ghost enthusiasts doubt this as Felton never visited this location.
Tumblr media
Funnily enough, the book that brought us to the attention of the missing Obelisk was Haunted Britain by Antony Hippisley Coxe. The book came out in 1973, but talks of the obelisk in present tense, despite it definitely not being there.
I’ll discuss theories in another post, as this is the ghost post, but it is definitely not there in 73.

peanuts parents
i know this is antithetical to the existence of peanuts but i kinda wanna give the kids’ parents names and vague personalities so here you go.
clarence brown - a barber. very down to earth man. has a handlebar mustache, a kind smile, and an adage for every situation. teaches both charlie brown and sally his trade
mary brown - homemaker. has an apron for every day of the week. spends most of her free time reading. she’s the reason charlie brown was able to get through war and peace
milton van pelt - the preacher at the local methodist church. short, balding, patient, and nonjudgemental. preaches a faith based on love, kindness, and acceptance, and rejects teachings of fear
frances van pelt - bank teller. no-nonense kind of woman. has her life together until her husband’s death and doesn’t know quite what to do once that happens. not a bad person, but she never really wanted to be a mother and it shows
marsha felton - school nurse. Very Midwestern with a thick accent. maiden name is schroeder, which she used as her son’s first name. she’s a little boring but sweet. if a sugar cookie were a human
bill felton - high school math teacher. doesn’t quite understand his son’s love for music but supports him anyway. his favorite hobby is reading the newspaper. he’s kinda boring too but in an endearing dad way
philip reichardt - engineer. wishes he could be at home more. dotes on his daughter as much as he can to make up for it, and she appreciates it and understands. makes friends with everybody he meets
vernon and annie carlin - doctor and nurse. have high expectations for their daughter marcie and think she is a little silly sometimes but they still love her. they just want her to succeed
henry and alice gray - businessman and homemaker. henry is away from home pretty often and truth be told he thinks more about work than he does about his home life. alice occupies herself by listening to soaps
gladys and frederick armstrong & and arthur jackson - frederick is canonically a soldier in the vietnam war. arthur is gladys’ father and lives with franklin’s family. gladys, arthur, and franklin spend every sunday solving the crossword puzzle in the paper
abigail swanson - raised patty with the help of her sister, virginia, who lives with them. works at a grocery store and visits the gray household in her free time to listen to soaps with alice
frank and harold evans - run a diner together. love their son james “pig pen” evans very much. they just ask that he washes his hands before he sits down for dinner.

Lilah Reddy (Late Mate): Simon met Lilah in college. She was a media communications specialist, while he was studying film. They fell in love, and at the end of school she revealed she was a Dingo shifter. He didn’t believe her at first, and was shocked when she changed for the first time. Simon reacted poorly at first and he took a few days to think about it. He was walking over to her house to tell her, when a dog attacked him. Lilah came rushing out of her house and ripped it off of him. His leg was bleeding badly and he had a hard time focusing. When Lilah began to patch him up, he heard her apologies. Another member of her pack had jumped him, and he was one of them now. It was a rough adjustment and Simon was angry at the situation. But he loved Lilah and decided to make the best of it. It took years, but they found their own happiness and had begun planning their wedding and talking about kids. One day Lilah didn’t come home, and Simon received a call. Lilah had been found dead and skinned, highly unusual for a Nimble shifter. He lost it and blacked out. Finally he awoke to Liz and Percy standing over him, while he was covered with blood. They helped up and into the car to take him home.
Platonic Connections:
Percival “Percy” McCormick III (Leader): Simon’s never had a bad experience with Percy, but a part of him wonders how Lilah’s death could be ignored. She was hunted, and it’s like no one even cares. When he blacked out after her death Percy and Liz found him. He had gone into a frenzy and changed a few humans; switch he once vowed he would never do. He’s thought about asking if there was any way they could have the human shifters take another look, but he doubts anything would come of it.
Austin Semler (Friendly): Anton has been dragging Austin along with him whenever he’s around Simon. Austin has taken to squeezing his shoulder as a greeting and has asked Simon to join him for lunch whenever he’s free.
Milton Rod Jackman (Coworker): Milton is part of Emmanuel’s investigation team. They work together daily, and Milton is one of the people he is closest to. Milton and his wife have invited him over a few times for dinner after Lilah passed. He thinks they’re both worried that he isn’t eating, since Tara Jackman loads him up with leftovers when he goes. A part hurts when he sees their family, but he appreciates what Milton is doing.
Isla Johns (Friend): Simon initially worked under Isla at her magazine, before he transferred to WJDF. They got along well, and he was touched that she and Lee went out of their way to reach out to him. He has a feeling she was one of the people who has dropped off meals for him since Lilah’s death.
Lee Boaz (Friendly): He was surprised when Lee reached out to him after Lilah’s death. They were never that close before, but it’s left an impression on him.
Emmanuel Flores (Coworker): Simon likes Emmanuel. They both have similar change stories and Simon is his main camera man whether in the studio or out reporting. He goes out of his way to cheer him up, especially on shoots, and he’s grateful.
Anton Kowalski (New Friend): Simon finds Anton very pleasant to be around and can see him becoming a good friend of his. At first, Anton’s constant small touches freaked Simon out but he couldn’t help to find them calming and comforting. Simon was once sure that coywolves, coyotes or dingo do not get touch starved but Anton has changed his thoughts on the matter.
Monty Wilders (Friendly): Monty was the first cop on the scene of Lilah’s death. He broke the news to Simon and has tried to keep him updated on anything they find. He’s surprised a street cop is putting in so much effort, but he appreciates it.
Winston Abioye (Friendly): Winston is the lead homicide investigator on Lilah’s death. He hasn’t found any concrete connections to her killer, but suspects hunters may be involved, due to the skinning. He hasn’t given out any particular family, and Simon thinks the case has gone cold.

Celebrity designers, context collapse, and rethinking how I teach design history
My first typography professor loved introducing us to her favorite designers. I remember learning about Paula Scher, Stefan Sagmeister, Milton Glaser, Neville Brody, and David Carson in that class. (She loved David Carson! We saw a lot of his work that semester — this was the mid-2000s, Sagmeister was at the height of his career and the shadow of Carson still loomed.) She wanted us to see work from history, as well as the contemporary work she found exciting so that it could inspire, inform, and guide our own work. Looking at the earliest work I did in school, you can see what designers had caught my interest at various points in my undergraduate career: the Vignelli phase came first, then it was Pentagram. By junior year, I was interested in illustration, and my work looked like Charley Harper's and Frank Chimero's. I had an infographic phase inspired by Nicholas Felton and an embarrassing handlettering period that mostly resulted in bad Jessica Hische knock-offs.
My classmates were the same way. There was a group of us who closely followed design blogs, tracking the 'celebrity designers' of the time. Some of us even got really excited by the two required design history surveys, saving images to our pre-Pinterest inspiration files and trying on the styles of different designers likes costumes. I remember one student particularly well who, following the lecture on Art Nouveau, decided he was going to make every project look like an Alphonse Mucha poster for the rest of the semester. I still cringe at the Russian-Constructivist-inspired poster I designed for a school function. We named dropped in critiques, showing off with our knowledge of history or our awareness of the trendy designers of the moment, completely unaware that half the class was rolling their eyes. For myself and my friends, it felt like part of being a good designer was knowing those names.
When I found myself back in the classroom — nearly a decade later, this time as the teacher — I was surprised to find how many of my students, at every level, had little sense of the history of graphic design, not to mention the 'celebrity designers' of today. Design history is largely foreign to them; it's an optional course in many design programs. It's rare for a student to know Sagmeister, Carson, and Scher (or Rudnick, Hu, and Walsh) if I mention one in class. I once had an upper level student who had never heard of Pentagram. Pentagram!
It's not that this generation of designers isn't consuming design media but the way they do is wildly different than when I was in school. At their age, we read blogs to find out who was doing the most interesting work, but those don't exist anymore. My students aren't reading It's Nice That or Eye on Design. They are on Instagram, on Behance, on Pinterest. Their design awareness, sensibilities, and taste is constructed through likes, pins, and retweets. They might not know the name Michael Bierut or have heard of Wolff Olins but they've seen the work. And they've also seen work from countless other designers flying below the mainstream design press radar.
Consuming design this way creates a peculiar context collapse. Everything moves fast, the thumb occasionally pausing for a closer look, where work from an international branding agency can sit next to a great poster by a high school student in India. These images travel from board to board, retweet to retweet, ever so slowly removing any sense of where it came from — the designer is often anonymous, the subject matter irrelevant. A quick tap saves it and then it's on to the next image. My students don't know the names of designers or agencies or studios but they do know what's trending, the popular styles, and the latest rebrand. Eventually, all the work starts to look the same.
Kids these days, I caught myself thinking. I had become the cranky old man complaining about how the next generation doesn't understand it sooner than I had thought I would. I mean, I'm only thirty and here I was worried about what this meant for the future. It was better when I was in school, I thought.
But what if this isn't necessarily a bad thing? Maybe this is an opportunity to teach design history and culture another way. Maybe it's a good thing for the idea of the 'celebrity designer' to die. The myth of the solo genius, alone in his studio, doesn't work anymore, and far too often it continues to only elevate the white male designer. Design conferences continue to feature the same designers year after year, sometimes even when at least one of those designers probably deserves to be cancelled. This perpetuates a particular idea of what a successful designer looks like and what makes for 'good design'.
Whether intended or not, the images my undergraduate professors showed us became the standard by which we judged design, and the names attached subconsciously became the people we were supposed to be emulating. The design history courses I took a decade ago were surveys: the professor would click through images on the screen in the front of the room; a list of names and styles we had to memorize. We spent little time talking about the content or articulating the context it sits within. Like my students now, I would get excited by something else I saw and use it in my own projects, regardless of context or content. Where we knew names, they know styles. Is one of these really worse than the other?
To be clear: this is not to say that names shouldn't be attached to the work or that we should disregard history. I believe these to be important elements of any design education. But inspiration is not enough. Trends are not enough. Simply collecting images is not enough. To move beyond inspiration, to dig deeper than trends and avoid celebrity design culture, we must make space for our students to reflect on this work and think about how it connects to their own blossoming practices.
In every class I teach, at both the undergraduate and graduate level, I've started requiring students to keep a visual journal — a dedicated place to keep images, PDFs, videos, photos — a simple attempt to encourage them to be more thoughtful about what they are consuming and saving. I try to build time into class for students to reflect on the work they are finding, and at the same time, I'm sharing the things I'm looking at and thinking about. (And I make it clear that what I share isn't always an endorsement.) Together we try to figure out why we are drawn to these things. Or repulsed by them. Or why they are trending. Or where they come from. We talk as a group about art movements and trends and gaps in history. We lean into the aesthetics, the contexts, the politics, and the ideologies that may or may not be embedded in the work. We dissect the visual moves the designer did and why she may have made those decisions. We find out more about the designer, of course, but we let the work speak for itself. Just because it came from a particular designer or a particular studio doesn't mean it's automatically great. Some of the best moments I've had in the classroom are when the students start debating these ideas — amongst themselves, without any guidance from me — trying to formulate their own point of view.
I want to create a space for young designers to feel comfortable conducting a thoughtful interrogation of images, visual culture, and the very profession they are about to enter — perhaps a small step in dismantling the celebrity designer complex while moving beyond the trends of their time. Looking at other design will always be central to the young designer's process, but they should't feel bound to trends, to styles, to celebrity as they move through their careers. The problem isn't that students don't know designers' names or are blindly following trends, it's that it is all moving too fast. Instead of fighting the new consumption paradigms, I've started to embrace it. Where I once looked down on these new modes of consuming media, romanticizing my own college experience, I now see the design students today as better equipped to do this work than I was at their age. They are well-versed in reading images, fluent in media literacy, and far less interested in celebrity. They get to experience more design — from all across the world — than any previous generation. If any of us can move beyond celebrity and dig deeper than the latest trend, it is them. We just need to be sure they have the critical tools, along with space and time, to do this work. The kids, I'm beginning to think, will be alright.

New story in Politics from Time: ‘When My Son Got Shot Down, I Stood Up.’ Trayvon Martin’s Mom Formally Announces Run for Local Office
(MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.) — The mother of the unarmed black teen who was shot dead by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Florida in 2012 has formally announced her candidacy to run for local office.
Sybrina Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin, spoke to supporters Monday at a small event space tucked away inside of a Miami Gardens shopping plaza. She announced her plans to challenge Miami Gardens Mayor Oliver Gilbert for a Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners seat that is up for grabs in 2020 because of term limits.
With her 28-year-old son, Jahvaris Fulton, and several other family members and friends at her side, Fulton stood at the podium in front of an audience of locals and pleaded her case.
Fulton, a self-described political outsider who is from the district, said she has been mulling a run for office for about a year. She said she had never intended to get involved in politics, and that the political world left “a sour taste” in her mouth.
She added that if it was not for her son’s killing, she would have been “going on vacations every year” and planning to retire.
But after being thrust into the national spotlight after her son’s death, she slowly began to realize that she “needed to become a part of the change.”
Fulton, who worked as a county employee for 24 years, became full-time activist, making appearances on national television, campaigning for Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential election and starting a South Florida-based organization that aims to end “senseless gun violence.”
“When my son got shot down, I stood up,” said Fulton. “And I’m still standing,” she added, provoking several cheers of “Amen” from audience members.
In addition to tackling gun violence, Fulton said she plans on combatting growing crime in the district. She’s also concerned with issues pertaining to housing access, mental illness and the elderly.
“I’m bringing fresh new energy to problems that we’ve seen for a long time,” she said.
Martin’s death sparked national outrage and was the catalyst for the Black Lives Matter movement, fueling the ongoing national conversation on systemic racism.
His killer, George Zimmerman, was acquitted on the grounds of Florida’s controversial Stand Your Ground law.
News of Zimmerman’s acquittal outraged many and led to protests across the United States.
Milton Felton sat in the crowd Monday, wearing an oversized red button barring Fulton’s name pinned to his chest. He said her ties to the community and her work following her son’s death make her a worthy candidate. The 65-year-old property inspector added that he’s in favor of an outsider entering the realm of local politics.
“Fresh air is always a good change of wind,” said Milton.
Lesley McSpadden, the mother of Michael Brown, a black 18-year-old who was fatally shot by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri in 2014, was defeated in April after running for a seat on her local city council. Brown’s death, like Trayvon Martin’s, caused large-scale civil unrest and added to the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement.
Lucy McBath, a Democrat and an African American whose 17-year-old son was fatally shot in 2012 by a white man during an argument over loud music outside a Florida convenience store, last year won a suburban Atlanta congressional seat that was previously held by a Republican. She became a gun control activist after her son was killed, and she campaigned on that issue.

At first, Anton's constant small touches freaked Simon out but he couldn’t help to find them calming and comforting.

LIZ WRITES A SONG
January 27, 1950
Tumblr media
“Liz Writes a Song” is episode #73 of the radio series MY FAVORITE HUSBAND broadcast on January 27, 1950 over the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service.
Synopsis ~ Liz is convinced that she is a musical talent, but when a music professor tells her she'll never be a singer, she decides to take up songwriting.
Tumblr media
Portions of this script were later used as inspiration for “The Benefit” (ILL S1;E13) filmed on November 30, 1951 and first aired on January 7, 1952. The premise of the foursome gathering around the piano for a night of singing and discovering Lucy cannot hold a tune is identical to this radio script.
This was the 22st episode of the second season of MY FAVORITE HUSBAND, the second of the new year and of the new decade (1950). There were 43 new episodes, with the season ending on June 25, 1950.
Tumblr media
“My Favorite Husband” was based on the novels Mr. and Mrs. Cugat, the Record of a Happy Marriage (1940) and Outside Eden (1945) by Isabel Scott Rorick, which had previously been adapted into the film Are Husbands Necessary? (1942). “My Favorite Husband” was first broadcast as a one-time special on July 5, 1948. Lucille Ball and Lee Bowman played the characters of Liz and George Cugat, and a positive response to this broadcast convinced CBS to launch “My Favorite Husband” as a series. Bowman was not available Richard Denning was cast as George. On January 7, 1949, confusion with bandleader Xavier Cugat prompted a name change to Cooper. On this same episode Jell-O became its sponsor. A total of 124 episodes of the program aired from July 23, 1948 through March 31, 1951. After about ten episodes had been written, writers Fox and Davenport departed and three new writers took over – Bob Carroll, Jr., Madelyn Pugh, and head writer/producer Jess Oppenheimer. In March 1949 Gale Gordon took over the existing role of George’s boss, Rudolph Atterbury, and Bea Benaderet was added as his wife, Iris. CBS brought “My Favorite Husband” to television in 1953, starring Joan Caulfield and Barry Nelson as Liz and George Cooper. The television version ran two-and-a-half seasons, from September 1953 through December 1955, running concurrently with “I Love Lucy.” It was produced live at CBS Television City for most of its run, until switching to film for a truncated third season filmed (ironically) at Desilu and recasting Liz Cooper with Vanessa Brown.
MAIN CAST
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball (Liz Cooper) was born on August 6, 1911 in Jamestown, New York. She began her screen career in 1933 and was known in Hollywood as ‘Queen of the B’s’ due to her many appearances in ‘B’ movies. With Richard Denning, she starred in a radio program titled “My Favorite Husband” which eventually led to the creation of “I Love Lucy,” a television situation comedy in which she co-starred with her real-life husband, Latin bandleader Desi Arnaz. The program was phenomenally successful, allowing the couple to purchase what was once RKO Studios, re-naming it Desilu. When the show ended in 1960 (in an hour-long format known as “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour”) so did Lucy and Desi’s marriage. In 1962, hoping to keep Desilu financially solvent, Lucy returned to the sitcom format with “The Lucy Show,” which lasted six seasons. She followed that with a similar sitcom “Here’s Lucy” co-starring with her real-life children, Lucie and Desi Jr., as well as Gale Gordon, who had joined the cast of “The Lucy Show” during season two. Before her death in 1989, Lucy made one more attempt at a sitcom with “Life With Lucy,” also with Gordon.
Richard Denning (George Cooper) was born Louis Albert Heindrich Denninger Jr., in Poughkeepsie, New York. When he was 18 months old, his family moved to Los Angeles. Plans called for him to take over his father’s garment manufacturing business, but he developed an interest in acting. Denning enlisted in the US Navy during World War II. He is best known for his  roles in various science fiction and horror films of the 1950s. Although he teamed with Lucille Ball on radio in “My Favorite Husband,” the two never acted together on screen. While “I Love Lucy” was on the air, he was seen on another CBS TV series, “Mr. & Mrs. North.” From 1968 to 1980 he played the Governor on “Hawaii 5-0″, his final role. He died in 1998 at age 84.
Gale Gordon (Rudolph Atterbury) had worked with Lucille Ball on “The Wonder Show” on radio in 1938. One of the front-runners to play Fred Mertz on “I Love Lucy,” he eventually played Alvin Littlefield, owner of the Tropicana, during two episodes in 1952. After playing a Judge in an episode of “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour” in 1958, he would re-team with Lucy for all of her subsequent series’: as Theodore J. Mooney in ”The Lucy Show”; as Harrison Otis Carter in “Here’s Lucy”; and as Curtis McGibbon on “Life with Lucy.” Gordon died in 1995 at the age of 89.
Bea Benadaret (Iris Atterbury) was considered the front-runner to be cast as Ethel Mertz but when “I Love Lucy” was ready to start production she was already playing a similar role on TV’s “The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show” so Vivian Vance was cast instead. On “I Love Lucy” she was cast as Lucy Ricardo’s spinster neighbor, Miss Lewis, in “Lucy Plays Cupid” (ILL S1;E15) in early 1952. Later, she was a success in her own show, “Petticoat Junction” as Shady Rest Hotel proprietress Kate Bradley. She starred in the series until her death in 1968.
Ruth Perrott (Katie, the Maid) was also later seen on “I Love Lucy.” She first played Mrs. Pomerantz, a member of the surprise investigating committee for the Society Matrons League in “Pioneer Women” (ILL S1;E25), as one of the member of the Wednesday Afternoon Fine Arts League in “Lucy and Ethel Buy the Same Dress” (ILL S3;E3), and also played a nurse when “Lucy Goes to the Hospital” (ILL S2;E16). She died in 1996 at the age of 96.
Bob LeMond (Announcer) also served as the announcer for the pilot episode of “I Love Lucy”. When the long-lost pilot was finally discovered in 1990, a few moments of the opening narration were damaged and lost, so LeMond – fifty years later – recreated the narration for the CBS special and subsequent DVD release.
GUEST CAST
Tumblr media
Hans Conried (Professor Krausemeyer / Mr. Wood, the Cooper’s neighbor) first co-starred with Lucille Ball in The Big Street (1942). He then appeared on “I Love Lucy” as used furniture man Dan Jenkins in “Redecorating” (ILL S2;E8) and later that same season as Percy Livermore in “Lucy Hires an English Tutor” (ILL S2;E13) – both in 1952. The following year he began an association with Disney by voicing Captain Hook in Peter Pan. On “The Lucy Show” he played Professor Gitterman in “Lucy’s Barbershop Quartet” (TLS S1;E19) and in “Lucy Plays Cleopatra” (TLS S2;E1). He was probably best known as Uncle Tonoose on “Make Room for Daddy” starring Danny Thomas, which was filmed on the Desilu lot. He joined Thomas on a season 6 episode of “Here’s Lucy” in 1973. He died in 1982 at age 64.
Conried uses a German accent for the role of the Professor. He previously played Krausemeyer in “Piano and Violin Lessons” (aka “Professor Krausmeyer’s Talent Scouts”), episode #26, broadcast on January 14, 1949. Professor Krausmeyer is likely the inspiration for Professor Gitterman on “The Lucy Show.” It is unusual for Conried to play back to back characters in one episode, but he regularly plays Mr. Wood and listeners would know his voice.
Tumblr media
Hal March (Radio Host) first appeared on the "I Love Lucy” in “Lucy Fakes Illness” (ILL S1;E16) using his own name to play an actor posing as the doctor who diagnoses Lucy with ‘golbloots.’ March got his first big break when he was cast as Harry Morton on “The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show” in 1950. He eventually lost the part to Fred Clark who producers felt was better paired with Bea Benaderet, who played Blanche, and here plays Iris Atterbury. He stayed with the show in other roles, the last airing just two weeks before his appearance as Eddie Grant in “Lucy is Matchmaker” (ILL S2;E27). In 1966 he was seen on “The Lucy Show.”
Tumblr media
Norma Zimmer (Radio Singer) was one of the citizens of Kildoonan in “Lucy Goes to Scotland” (ILL S5;E17). She also appeared as a chorus girl in Singin’ in the Rain (1952). She would become famous as Lawrence Welk’s Champagne Lady and 20 years later introduced the episode “Lucy Meets Lawrence Welk” (HL S2;E18) on the “Here’s Lucy” series 2 DVD.
EPISODE
ANNOUNCER: “As we look in on the Coopers, it’s evening and Liz and George are entertaining George’s boss, Mr. Atterbury, and his wife. Dinner’s over and the group is in the living room having coffee.”
George suggests they listen to the radio, but Mr. Atterbury hardly knows what the word means since he got his television set.  George flips on the radio and here’s a singer (Norman Zimmer) performing “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo”.
Tumblr media
“Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo" (also called "The Magic Song") was written by Al Hoffman, Mack David, and Jerry Livingston for the 1950 film Cinderella. Coincidentally, it was first performed by actress Verna Felton, who would go on to play the Ricardo’s maid, Mrs. Hudson, and star in the Desilu sitcom “December Bride” as Hilda. The song was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1951 but lost out to "Mona Lisa" from Captain Carey, U.S.A.
Mr. Atterbury doesn’t understand the song’s nonsense lyrics. Liz explains:
LIZ: “It’s ‘Mairzys Doates' sung sideways.”
Tumblr media
“Mairzy Doats” is a novelty song written in 1943 by Milton Drake, Al Hoffman, and Jerry Livingston, two of the same writers that would create “Bibbidi-Bobbidy-Boo.” The song made the pop charts several times, with a version by the Merry Macs reaching No. 1 in March 1944. The song was also a number-one sheet music seller, with sales of over 450,000. Bing Crosby also had a hit with the silly song.
George flips the radio off the radio and Mr. Atterbury complains that they don’t write songs like they used to. Iris sarcastically reminds him of his youth by asking him to sing ‘Vo-do-do-de-o.”
Tumblr media
Iris is probably referring to “Vo-do-do-de-o Blues” a novelty song written by Jack Yellen and Milton Ager in 1927, although the term “Vo-do-do-de-o” was common slang in the 1920s and was found in a number of songs of the time.
Mr. Atterbury says that there was nothing like “When Francis Dances With Me” and “The Sheik of Araby” - even singing a few bars.
Tumblr media
“When Francis Dances With Me” was written by Sol Violinsky and Ben Ryan in 1921 and covered by The Andrews Sisters in 1958. “The Sheik of Araby” was written in 1921 by Harry B. Smith and Francis Wheeler, with music by Ted Snyder. It was composed in response to the popularity of the Rudolph Valentino feature film The Sheik.  On “I Love Lucy,” Lucy’s mother was a fan of Valentino and even sang a few bars of this song in “The Hedda Hopper Story” (ILL S4;E21) in 1955.
Liz notices Mr. Atterbury’s good singing voice. George chimes in with a few choruses of “Yes Sir, That’s My Baby.”
Tumblr media
"Yes Sir, That's My Baby" was written by Walter Donaldson and Gus Kahn in 1925.  The title inspired a 1949 film of the same name starring Donald O’Connor and Gloria DeHaven, who will be reunited by Lucille Ball for “Lucy Moves To NBC” in 1980.
The foursome settle on spending a night singing around the piano, starting with a chorus of “When You Wore A Tulip”.
Tumblr media
“When You Wore A Tulip And I Wore A Big Red Rose” was written in 1914 by Percy Wenrich and Jack Mahoney and popularized by Dolly Connolly (1888-1965).  It was part of the 1942 film For Me And My Gal sung by Gene Kelly and Judy Garland.
It becomes apparent that somebody is out of tune.
MR. ATTERBURY: “One of our songbirds has gravel in his beak!”
No one will confess to being the clunker, so they sound one note at a team till it is revealed that it is Liz who has a tin ear!  Iris suggests they sing “Button Up Your Overcoat,” but their quartet has become a trio.  Liz must “button up her lip.”
Tumblr media
"Button Up Your Overcoat" was written by Ray Henderson, B.G. DeSylva and Lew Brown in 1928, and was first performed by Ruth Etting, who appeared with Lucille Ball in Roman Scandals (1933). However, the most famous rendition of this song was by Helen Kane, the inspiration for the voice of Betty Boop. Jack Haley and Zelma O'Neal sang it on Broadway in the musical, Follow Thru (1929). They reprised the song in the film version in 1930. It has since been heard in nine films and multiple television shows.
Next day, George says good morning to Liz, who went to bed early while George and the Atterbury’s sang the night away.
LIZ: “Well, if it isn’t Al Jolson. What time did Bing and Dinah go home?”
Tumblr media
Singer, comedian, and actor Al Jolson would die 9 months after this broadcast. He co-wrote and introduced the song “California, Here I Come” which was famously sung on “I Love Lucy” in an episode of the same name. Bing Crosby (1903-77) was one of the most successful multi-media stars of his time. He was mentioned by Ricky Ricardo on “I Love Lucy” in “Ricky’s Contract” (ILL S4;E10) in 1954. Dinah Shore (1916-94) was the top-charting female vocalist of the 1940s. Shore guest starred as herself on a 1971 episode of “Here’s Lucy” (HL S4;E7) and Ball made numerous appearances on her talk and variety shows.
Liz tells George that Professor Krausemeyer is coming over to give her voice lessons.
LIZ: “Don’t be surprised if I’m singing on radio before long.” GEORGE: “Liz, television hasn’t hurt it that much!”
Tumblr media
In early 1950, television was still considered an upstart medium, inferior to radio. the idea that television might woo listeners away from the radio was being voiced, but most were still skeptical. As is evidence from the above TV program grid for January 27, 1950, CBS and ABC had no new programs up against “My Favorite Husband” on radio at 8:30pm. Many early television shows, including “I Love Lucy” were aired on both radio and television well into the late 1950s.
GEORGE (leaving for work): “See ya at Carnegie Hall!”
Tumblr media
Carnegie Hall is an iconic concert venue in Midtown Manhattan in New York City. It is at 881 Seventh Avenue, occupying the east side of Seventh Avenue between West 56th and 57th Streets. It was built by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie in 1891 and it is still considered the epitome of a vocalists career to sing there.
George bets that Liz will never sing on the radio - even going so far as to promise to roll an egg down main street with his nose if she does!
Tumblr media
Katie the Maid opens the door to Professor Krausemeyer (Hans Conried).  His theory of singing is that if you can talk, you can sing.  The Professor is astounded just how tone deaf Liz really is, but he forges ahead.  He tells Liz to just sing something for him.  She choses “Stardust” - one of her favorites. Needless to say, she is terribly out of tune. He stops her.
PROFESSOR: “You love that song?  LIZ: “Yes.” PROFESSOR: “I’d hate to hear you sing something you hate.”
Tumblr media
"Star Dust" was composed in 1927 by Hoagy Carmichael with lyrics added by Mitchell Parish in 1929. The song became an American standard and is one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century with over 1,500 recordings.  In “The Saxophone” (ILL S2;E2) in 1952, Ethel requests Lucy play “Star Dust” but it keeps coming out as “The Glow-Worm.”
Professor Krausemeyer finally declares that there are two kinds of singers: those who sing, and those who listen. Liz is in the latter category! In Part Two, Liz is crying to Katie that she will never be a nightingale. Katie says her sister writes songs and lets others sing them. She wrote the ‘hit’ songs: “Think of Your Friends as Bananas and Count Me as One of the Bunch” and “I Call My Little Boy Tripod Since He’s Grown Another Foot.” Katie tells Liz there’s a weekly song-writing contest at the local radio station and Liz intends on entering it.
LIZ: “Carrie Jacobs Cooper writes again!”
Tumblr media
Carrie Jacobs-Bond (1862-1946) was a songwriter who composed some 175 pieces of popular music from the 1890s through the early 1940s. She is perhaps best remembered for writing the parlor song "I Love You Truly", becoming the first woman to sell one million copies of a song.  The song was sung by Elizabeth Patterson when Lucy Ricardo renewed her vows to Ricky in “The Marriage License” (ILL S1;E26) and briefly by Viv Bagley in Chris Goes Steady (TLS S2;E16) in 1964.
After several hours of song-writing, Liz is going crazy repeating rhymes to write lyrics for her songs. Her neighbor, Mr. Wood (Hans Conried again) comes to the door and strikes a deal that they will be co-authors of songs for the contest. Liz plunks out the tune she has been working on. It is identical to “My Country ‘Tis Of Thee”!  Mr. Wood tells her that this also happened to him. He was once accused of stealing a tune from Tchaikovsky. but he didn’t. He actually stole from Freddy Martin who stole it from Tchaikovsky!
Tumblr media
Freddy Martin (1906-83) was a bandleader and saxophonist who appeared as himself on a 1971 episode of “Here’s Lucy”. His theme song, “Tonight We Love,” was adapted from the first movement of Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto. It sold over one million copies by 1946, and was awarded a gold record.
Tumblr media
Mr. Wood says they should should seek inspiration on songs from the past. Liz reckons that their song should have a girl’s name in it.
“Look at “Margie”, “Dinah”, “Laura”, “Sweet Sue”.
"Margie" (aka "My Little Margie") by Benny Davis, a vaudeville performer and songwriter. The song was introduced by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band in 1920.
"Dinah" was written in 1925 by Harry Akst, Sam M. Lewis and Joe Young. One singer, Fannye Rose Shore, became so identified with the song that a DJ called her "Dinah Shore", which then stuck as her stage name for the next 50 years.
"Laura" was composed by David Raksin for the 1944 movie Laura, which starred Gene Tierney and Dana Andrews.
"Sweet Sue (Just You)" is a jazz standard of 1928, composed by Victor Young with lyrics by Will J. Harris. On “I Love Lucy,” it was one of the few songs Lucy Ricardo could play on the saxophone, next to the previously mentioned “Glow Worm.”
Mr. Wood says there should be a city in it, too:
“Like Chicago”, "Chattanooga Choo-Choo", "Meet Me In Old St. Louis.”
"Chicago" was written by Fred Fisher and published in 1922. The song has been recorded by many artists, but the best-known version is by Frank Sinatra. It was heard on screen in The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle (1930), Roxie Hart (1945), and Oh, You Beautiful Doll (1949).
"Chattanooga Choo Choo" is a 1941 song written by Mack Gordon and composed by Harry Warren. It was originally recorded by Glenn Miller and His Orchestra and featured in the 1941 movie Sun Valley Serenade. It was the first song to receive a gold record in 1942.
"Meet Me in St. Louis" is a song from 1904 with words by Andrew B. Sterling; and music by Kerry Mills. The song was the centerpiece of the 1944 Judy Garland movie, Meet Me in St. Louis.
Liz says it should also be a western, citing:
“Ghost Riders in the Sky” and “Mule Train.”
"(Ghost) Riders in the Sky" is a cowboy-styled country / western song written in 1948 by Stan Jones. A number of versions were crossover hits on the pop charts in 1949, the most successful being by Vaughn Monroe.
"Mule Train" was written by Johnny Lange, Hy Heath, Ramblin' Tommy Scott and Fred Glickman. It is a cowboy song originally recorded by Ellis "Buz" Butler Jr. in 1947. The song was featured in the 1950 film Singing Guns (sung by Vaughn Monroe) and nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1950, but lost to "Mona Lisa".
LIZ: “All we need is a girl  who is going to a city who falls in love with a ghost writer who beats her with a whip.  Let’s get started!”
Tumblr media
The day of the contest, Liz is nervously pacing by the telephone waiting to hear the results.  Mr. Wood went down to the radio station to see what he could find out. Mr. Wood phones and tells Liz the good news that they won!  They will both have to sing it on the radio that night, although Liz insists she will just stand nearby and look pretty while he does the singing.
Tumblr media
Arriving at the radio station with the Atterburys and George in tow, she finds out that Mr. Wood has developed laryngitis. The radio host (Hal March) introduces Liz and Mr. Wood, and tells him that she will have to sing for Mr. Wood, who has lost his voice.  Their song sounds suspiciously like “Home on the Range,” if Liz can only sing loud enough to be heard, that is.
The host volunteers sings with her to boost her volume.
LIZ & HOST (singing): “Oh, I’ve got a girl Her first name is Pearl She comes from Pittsburgh, PA. She looks like a witch, But her old man is rich,  and her last name is yippy ki-yay!”
Liz wins the prize and George realizes he will have to roll an egg down main street with his nose!
Tumblr media
In the bedtime tag, Liz wakes up George, who is snoring. She puts a pillow over his face to stop his snoring, but then fears he has stopped breathing - until he gives another great, big snore.
GEORGE: “Goodnight, Liz!”
