K-Kunimitsu

B-but of course~! There's not much I can say about them from an in-universe perspective, I'll be honest, we just don't know enough about them personally, but there's actually quite a lot to say about their inspirations.

So! Let's look at our commoner youkai exterminator:

Royal Court's Youkai Exterminator — Kunimitsu Ooya

To really understand Kunimitsu's basis, we have to understand the very poorly documented (in English anyways) "The Tale of Yasutaka Utou's Loyalty" (善知安方忠義伝) by Santō Kyōden.

Disclaimer

Since I could find literally nothing on the book in English. Everything here's gonna be based on my own translations of the Japanese/Chinese sources I found, so take it with a grain of salt.

(The English equivalent of its wikipedia page is on a woodblock print based on the story, and not on the actual book, so uh, make sure to read carefully folks)

(Normally I'd be more confident but I'm not reading an entire 17th-century novel written in pre-modern Japanese so y'all are gonna have to deal with a third-hand account)

The Tale of Yasutaka Utou's Loyalty

"The Tale of Yasutaka Utou's Loyalty" (善知安方忠義伝) is an Edo period yomihon novel series by Santō Kyōden. Its story was never actually completed, but was published anyways in 1806.

It is said to be based on the Noh play "Utoh" (善知鳥 Lit. "Auklets", also translated as "Birds of Sorrow") as well as the Masakado legends.

The story follows Taira no Masakado's children, Taira no Yoshikado (平良門) and Takiyasha-hime (滝夜叉姫), and their attempt in continuing their father's uprising; as well as the trials and tribulations underwent by Yasutaka Utou (善知安方) and his wife, as well as Yasutaka's loyalty (to what or whom I'm honestly unsure).

For the part of the story we actually care about, we start with the toad spirit Nikushisen (肉芝仙), who resides on Mount Tsukuba (筑波山). It saved up so much spiritual power over its 3000-year life, that it awakened to potent "toad magic" (yes toad magic).

After Masakado's defeat as an enemy of the imperial court, Nikushisen appeared before Yoshikado, who Masakado had kept a secret and thus saved, told him his origins, taught him toad magic and persuaded him to continue the rebellion.

(Note: Yoshikado is entirely fictitious, and never existed, although tales about him have existed for a while, hence his use in this tale)

In addition, Nikushisen possessed Yoshikado's sister, the Buddhist nun Kisaragi-ni (如月尼), transforming her into Takiyasha-hime. Together, they are the masterminds behind most of the misfourtunes in the book, and the main antagonists to Yasutaka and co.

(Note: Takiyasha-hime was a historical figure, but nothing was known about her other than the fact that she existed. These books are believed to be the origin of fiction using her as a character.)

Inspiration: Ooya Tarou Mitsukuni

With all this established, we can finally get into the pivotal scene and character Kunimitsu is based on: Ooya Tarou Mitsukuni.

In the story, Ooya Tarou Mitsukuni (大宅太郎光圀) is a fictitious retainer of the historical Minamoto no Yorinobu (源 頼信), who put down another rebellion attempt by one of Masakado's grandsons.

Mitsukuni was sent to the Soma clan's old imperial palace, an abandoned palace originally built for Masakado imitating the one in the imperial capital where the Emperor lives, to arrest conspirators of Yoshikado and Takiyasha-hime, who were gathering there.

To fight back, the siblings summoned and controlled the skeletons of countless fallen warriors to fight back against their enemies, chief amongst them Ooya Tarou Mitsukuni.

This scene is famously (even moreso than the original story) depicted in a woodblock print by the famed ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi, simply titled "The Soma's Old Imperial Palace" (相馬の古内裏). (This by the way is what the English version of the books' wikipedia page is actually on, ugh)

In Utagawa's depiction, only Takiyasha-hime (left panel) is present, while the many skeletons are instead one giant skeleton (centre & right). In the middle, fighting against it, is Mitsukuni (left) and fellow warrior Araimaru (荒井丸) (he's unimportant to us though).

SO! Now we can finally look into how Mitsukuni inspired Kunimitsu.

First off, name: Obviously, they share the same family name, Ooya (大宅), a fairly common surname that means "large mansion". The given name Kunimitsu (都光) is just the name Mitsukuni (光圀) sliced in half and swapped in order.

However, while "mitsu" is still written with the same character, 光 (light); "kuni" is written with a different one: 都 (capital city) in Kunimitsu and 圀 (country) in Mitsukuni. This swap was likely to distance Kunimitsu from Mitsukuni, as well as to strengthen their ties to the imperial capital of Devanagara.

Kunimitsu's occupation as a youkai exterminator is likely based on Mitsukuni repelling the skeleton army/giant skeleton that Takiyasha-hime (and Yoshikado) sends after him.

Finally, the pose Kunimitsu is in is actually nearly identical to that of Mitsukuni in the following woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, often considered "the last great master of ukiyo-e". Interestingly this version keeps the skeleton army.

Tying Things Up

While I could've certainly just drawn the parallels between Mitsukuni and Kunimitsu and called it a day, "The Tale of Yasutaka Utou's Loyalty" is actually quite influential to Len'en in general.

In fact, it ties together Chouki, Fumikado, Sese and Kunimitsu, perhaps you've noticed them as well? So think of it as laying the groundwork for analysing all of them, and thanks for bearing with me.

In any case, here are some other curious points that I'll point out about Kunimitsu:

The symbols on their crown (the Fujiwara dynasty's crown) are likely Sanskrit, I can't read Sanskrit though so I've no idea what it says, and I can't identify them with any characters just from what I have online either

Kunimitsu seems to have a personal grudge against the Senri Shrine, having "a score to settle with them", although it's unclear why

They extermination youkai to demonstrate that people no longer need the Senri priests

They're apparently talented in the kitchen as well as with a sword

When I heard of Dankira ended its service yesterday, I think it's about time for them to show their feast days in this latest installment to commemorate this occasion. So here it is.

August 20 - Sora Asahi

St. Bernard of Clairvaux: 12th century French abbot and confessor, and a major leader in the revitalization of Benedictine monasticism through the nascent Order of Cistercians. There he preached an immediate faith, in which the intercessor was the Virgin Mary. In 1139, Bernard assisted at the Second Council of the Lateran. He subsequently denounced the teachings of Peter Abelard to the pope, who called a council at Sens in 1141 to settle the matter. Bernard was the first Cistercian placed on the calendar of saints, and was canonized by Pope Alexander III in 1174, and Pope Pius VIII bestowed Bernard the title of Doctor of the Church. His major shrine can be found in Troyes Cathedral.

March 20 - Mahiru Hinata

St. John Nepomucene (John of Nepomuk): 14th century priest and martyr who was drowned in the Vltava river at the behest of Wenceslaus IV of Bohemia (Czech Republic). Later accounts state that he was the confessor of the queen of Bohemia and refused to divulge the secrets of the confessional. On the basis of this account, John of Nepomuk is considered the first martyr of the Seal of the Confessional, a patron against defamation and, because of the manner of his death, a protector from floods and drowning. He is the patron saint of the Spanish Naval Infantry.

November 24 - Reiji Yano

The Vietnamese Martyrs: The Vatican estimates the number of Vietnamese martyrs at between 130,000 and 300,000. Pope St. John Paul II decided to canonize those whose names are known and unknown, giving them a single feast day. One of the most prominent person of the group is Andrew Dũng-Lạc, who was born to a peasant family and is ordained a priest in 1823. Many years later in 1998, he and the rest of the martyrs were canonized by Pope St. John Paul II. Among the number of the martyrs, there were 97 Vietnamese, 11 Dominican missionaries from Spain, and 10 French belonged to the Paris Foreign Mission Society; 59 were lay people and the rest of them are religious and or members of the clergy.

February 17 - Akira Shido

Seven Holy Founders of the Servite Order: The seven holy founders consisted of Alexis Falconieri, Amadeus of the Amidei, Hugh dei Lippi Uggucioni, Benedetto dell' Antella, Gherardino di Sostegno, Buonfiglio dei Monaldi and Giovanni di Buonagiunta. On January 1888, Pope Leo XIII canonized all seven of them, and their feast was inserted in the General Roman Calendar for celebration on 11 February, the anniversary of the granting of canonical approval to the order in 1304. In the 1969 revision of the calendar, 17 February, the date of death of Alexis Falconieri was judged to be more appropriate.

December 11 - Noel Gekkoin

Pope St. Damasus I: 37th bishop of Rome who reigned for 18 years. He presided over the Council of Rome of 382 that determined the canon or official list of sacred scripture, and spoke out against major heresies in the church (including Apollinarianism and Macedonianism) and encouraged production of the Vulgate Bible with his support for Jerome. He helped reconcile the relations between the Church of Rome and the Church of Antioch, and encouraged the veneration of martyrs.

June 27 - Kei Kagemiya

Our Lady of Perpetual Help (Our Lady of Perpetual Succour): A Marian title represented in a celebrated 15th-century Byzantine icon also associated with the same Marian apparition. The icon is originated from the Keras Kardiotissas Monastery and has been in Rome since 1499, and today, it is permanently enshrined in the Church of Saint Alphonsus, where the official Novena to Our Mother of Perpetual Help text is prayed weekly. In 1867, Pope Pius IX granted the image its Canonical Coronation along with its present title. The Redemptorist Congregation of priests and brothers are the only religious order currently entrusted by the Holy See to protect and propagate a Marian religious work of art. Due to promotion by the Redemptorist Priests since 1865, the image has become very popular among Roman Catholics, and modern reproductions are oftentimes displayed in residential homes, commercial establishments, and public transportation.

May 12 - Seito Tsubaki

Bl. Imelda Lambertini: Italian laywoman, virgin and mystic. Her parents were devout Catholics and were known for their charity and generosity to the underprivileged of Bologna. On her fifth birthday, she requested to receive Holy Eucharist; however the custom at the time was that children did not receive their First Holy Communion until it reached the age of fourteen. On the day of the vigil of the Ascension, she knelt in prayer and the 'Light of the Host' was reportedly witnessed above her head by the Sacristan, who then fetched the priest so he could see. After seeing this miracle, the priest felt compelled to admit her to receiving the Eucharist. Immediately after receiving it, Lambertini went back to her seat, and decided to stay after mass and pray. Later when a nun came to get Lambertini for supper, she found Lambertini still kneeling with a smile on her face. The nun called her name, but she did not stir, so she lightly tapped Imelda on the shoulder, at which Imelda collapsed to the floor dead. Beatified by Pope Leo XII in 1826, she is the patroness of First Communicants.

July 20 - Soma Yagami

St. Apollinaris of Ravenna: 1st century Syrian bishop and martyr, whom the Roman Martyrology describes as 'a bishop who, according to tradition, while spreading among the nations the unsearchable riches of Christ, led his flock as a good shepherd and honored the Church of Classis near Ravenna by a glorious martyrdom.' A noted miracle worker, Apollinaris is considered especially effective against gout, venereal disease and epilepsy. His relics are at the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo and the 6th century Benedictine Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe, both in Ravenna and in Saint Lambert's church in Düsseldorf, Germany.

November 11 - Nozomu Miki

St. Martin of Tours: Confessor and the third bishop of Tours. One of the most familiar and recognizable Christian saints in Western tradition. Martin converted to Christianity at a young age and served in the Roman cavalry in Gaul, but left military service at some point prior to 361, when he became a disciple of Hilary of Poitiers, establishing the monastery at Ligugé. He is best known for the account of his using his military sword to cut his cloak in two, to give half to a beggar clad only in rags in the depth of winter. His shrine in Tours became a famous stopping-point for pilgrims on the road to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. He is the patron of beggars, wool-weavers and tailors, as well as the patron of the United States Army Quartermaster Corps even though he detested violence.

September 18 - Yukari Wakakusa

St. Joseph of Cupertino: Italian friar from the Conventual Franciscans, a branch of the Franciscan order. He was said to have been remarkably unclever, but prone to miraculous levitation and intense ecstatic visions that left him gaping. Canonized as saint by Pope Clement XIII in 1767, he is the patron of mental handicaps, examinations, aviation and astronauts.

June 13 - Mitsukuni Minamoto

St. Anthony of Padua: Franciscan Portuguese friar and priest who is noted by his contemporaries for his powerful preaching, expert knowledge of scripture, and undying love and devotion to the poor and the sick, he was one of the most quickly canonized saints in church history. Although he is known as the patron of lost items, his major shrine can be found in Padua, Italy. In January 1946, he is proclaimed a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius XII, and is given the title of Doctor Evangelicus (Evangelical Doctor).

April 28 - Oboro Kiriyama

St. Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort (Louis de Monfort): French priest and confessor, who was known in his time as a preacher and was made a missionary apostolic by Pope Clement XI. As well as preaching, he found time to write a number of books which went on to become classic Catholic titles and influenced several popes, and he is known for his particular devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the practice of praying the Rosary. He is considered as one of the early writers in the field of Mariology. His most notable works regarding Marian devotions are contained in Secret of the Rosary and True Devotion to Mary. Monfort is canonized as a saint two years after World War II under the pontificate of Pope Pius XII.

St. Louis Bertrand: Spanish Dominican friar, confessor, missionary, and religious brother who is known as the 'Apostle of South America.' After his ordination by St. Thomas of Villanova, he went to South America for his missionary work. According to legend, a deadly draught was administered to him by one of the native priests. Through Divine interposition, the poison failed to accomplish its purpose. There is a town festival, called La Tomatina in Buñol, Valencia, in his honor along with Mare de Déu dels Desemparats.

April 12 - Shiki Janome

Pope St. Julius I: 35th successor of St. Peter who reigned for 15 years and is credited with splitting the birth of Christ into two distinct celebrations (Epiphany and the Nativity) as well as asserting the authority of the pope over the Arian Eastern bishops. After his death in 352 AD, he is succeeded by Pope Liberius.

January 12 - Tsukumo Busujima

St. Marguerite Bourgeoys: French nun who is known as the founder of the Congregation of Notre Dame of Montreal in the colony of New France, now part of the province of Québec in Canada.  She is also significant for developing one of the first uncloistered religious communities in the Catholic Church. She was canonized in 1982 and declared a saint by the Catholic Church, the first female saint of Canada.

January 31 - Atago Rentaro

St. John Bosco: Italian priest, educator, confessor and writer who is popularly known as 'Don Bosco' as well as the 'Father and Teacher of Youth'. While working in Turin, where the population suffered many of the ill-effects of industrialization and urbanization, he dedicated his life to the betterment and education of street children, juvenile delinquents, and other disadvantaged youth. He developed teaching methods based on love rather than punishment, a method that became known as the Salesian Preventive System. John was an ardent devotee of Mary, mother of Jesus, under the title Mary Help of Christians. He later dedicated his works to De Sales when he founded the Salesians of Don Bosco, based in Turin. He also founded the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, a religious congregation of nuns dedicated to the care and education of poor girls together with Maria Domenica Mazzarello, and he taught Dominic Savio, of whom he wrote a biography that helped the young boy be canonized.

September 6 - Habashiri Ginko

Zechariah the Prophet: He was a person that can be found in the Hebrew Bible and traditionally considered the author of the Book of Zechariah, the 11th of the Twelve Minor Prophets. He was a prophet of the Kingdom of Judah, and, like the prophet Ezekiel, was of priestly extraction. The Roman Catholic Church honors him with a feast day assigned to this date.

August 4 - Tsubaki Kento

St. John Vianney: French priest and confessor who is known as the patron saint of parish priests. He is often referred to as the 'Curé d'Ars', internationally known for his priestly and pastoral work in his parish in Ars, France, because of the radical spiritual transformation of the community and its surroundings. Catholics attribute this to his saintly life, mortification, persevering ministry in the sacrament of confession, and ardent devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. His major shrine can be found in Ars-sur-Formans.

hey you guys should play dankira

ok so before start dankira is like... one of my favorite mobile games at the moment and the community (especially the one on tumblr) is really small so i wanted to spread the word about this really fun game. anyways onto the post :

what the hell is a dankira?

dankira (or dance killer trick) is a rhythm game that was made by konami, except instead of focusing on idols like other rhythm games (think utapri, bandori etc.) it’s based around these different dance teams. at the moment there’s only eight songs (nine if you include the event song) and three difficulty levels but its still very fun !!

is there a story?

yes! theres a main story, character stories, soul link stories, and event stories which you can find being translated here by the @/dankira_eng on twitter. it’s still in the process of being translated but you can read up to chapter 2 of the main story. tl;dr the story focuses on the “main unit” merry panic. the members of merry panic, reiji, sora, and mahiru, are all orphans who grew up together and love dankira. together they enter benizuru academy, a school for dankira, in order to reach the top of the dankira world.

how do you play?

unfortunately dankira is region locked to japan, but here’s a guide on how to create a japanese itunes account so you can download it on ios (i am unfamiliar with the process on android so i’m not including that :( afaik it involves using qooapp). anyways, dankira is pretty similar to most rhythm games, but for those unfamiliar with rhythm games i’ll give a small rundown. for starters there is a card collecting/gacha element in dankira, where you collect cards of different characters rated 1-5 stars to form a 3 person unit, which you use to play the songs. however there are two things that set it apart from other rhythm games, 1 is that you are always playing against other people, meaning you can’t play by yourself or with a computer, and also killer tricks. in short killer tricks are special moves that your characters can do and earn a huge amount of clap points. if you want a more in-depth guide, read this gameplay guide.

anyways i should probably introduce the characters now

this is merry panic ! from left to right, the characters names are reiji yano, sora asahi, and mahiru hinata. reiji is a 1st year in high school while sora and mahiru are both 3rd years in middle school. sora is the team leader of merry panic and their specialty is hip hop dance.

this is étoile, from left to right the characters are akira shido, noel gekkoin, and kei kagemiya. akira and kei are 1st years in high school while noel is a 3rd year in middle school. noel is étoile’s team leader and they are regarded as the strongest dankira unit in benizuru academy. their specialty is ballet.

this unit is theater bell. from left to right the characters are seito tsubaki, soma yagami, and nozomu miki. seito is a 3rd year in high school while soma and nozomu are both 2nd years. soma is the team leader and their specialty is jazz dance.

this is sanzensekai, and from left to right the members are yukari wakakusa, mitsukuni minamoto, and oboro kiriyama. mitsukuni and oboro are both high school 2nd years while yukari is a 1st year in middle school (yes he’s 12). mitsukuni is the team leader of sanzensekai and their specialty is martial arts dance.

last but definitely not least, this is toxic. from left to right the members are ageha kurenai, shiki janome, and tsukumo busujima. toxic features members from each year, with shiki being a 1st year, ageha a 2nd year, and tsukumo a 3rd year. shiki is the team leader and their specialty is vogue dancing.

anyways, i really wanted to make a “promo post” for this game for a while because it is something i truly love. sure, its definitely not perfect but its super fun and enjoyable to play, and the characters are all very unique and lovable. if you haven’t already, you should give dankira shot, whether by playing it or just by reading the story!

Akechi Clan

The Akechi were related to the Toki family, whom they served until the latter fell to the Saitô; in the 1540's. The Akechi later served Oda Nobunaga and became well-known thanks to Akechi Mitsuhide, the capable Oda general who destroyed his master, Nobunaga, in June 1582. After Mitsuhide was defeated by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the Akechi largely disappeared from history.

*Prominent People*

*Akechi Mitsuyasu*(????-1552) He held Akechi castle in Mino province and served the Toki clan. His daughter was married to Saitô Dôsan.

*Akechi Mitsukuni* also called Akechi Mitsutsuna(1497-1538) Mitsukuni was a son of Akechi Mitsutsugu. and father of Akechi Mitsuhide. He served the Toki family and resided at Akechi castle.

*Akechi Mitsuhide* ( 1528 –1582) Mitsuhide was a general under daimyo Oda Nobunaga, although he became famous for his rebellion against Nobunaga in 1582, which led to Nobunaga's death at Honno-ji.

In 1582, Mitsuhide was ordered to march west and assist Hashiba Hideyoshi who was currently fighting the Môri clan. Ignoring his orders, Mitsuhide assembled an army of 13,000 soldiers and moved against Nobunaga's position at Honnoji. On June 21, Mitsuhide was quoted as saying, "The enemy is at Honnō-ji!". His army surrounded the temple and eventually set it on fire. Oda Nobunaga was killed either during the fighting, or by his own hand. Nobunaga's son, Oda Hidetada, fled the scene, but was surrounded at Nijo and killed.Despite not killing Nobunaga personally, Mitsuhide claimed responsibility for his death.

Mitsuhide's betrayal of the Oda shocked the capital, and he moved quickly to secure his position. Mitsuhide, claiming lineage from the Toki and thus the Minamoto clan, declared himself Shogun, and looted Azuchi castle so as to reward his men and maintain their loyalty.

Mitsuhide attempted to make gestures of friendship to a panicked Imperial Court; he also made many attempts to win over the other clans, but to no avail. Hosokawa Fujitaka, to whom he was related through marriage, quickly cut ties with him; Tsutsui Junkei, who previously had a rocky relationship with the Oda, sided against him.

Mitsuhide had been counting on Toyotomi Hideyoshi to be detained fighting with the Mori, and unable to respond to his coup d'etat. However, having learned of the assassination of his lord, Hideyoshi quickly signed a peace treaty with the Mori, and alongside Tokugawa Ieyasu rushed to be the first to avenge Nobunaga and take his place.

Hideyoshi force-marched his army to Settsu in four days, and caught Mitsuhide off guard. Mitsuhide had been unable to garner support for his cause, and his army had dwindled down to 10,000 men. Hideyoshi, however, had won over former Oda retainers, including Niwa Nagahide and Takayama Ukon, and had a strength of 20,000 men. The two forces met at the Battle of Yamazaki.

Mitsuhide took up a position south of Shoryuji Castle, securing his right flank by the Yodo river, and his left at the foot of the 270-metre Tennozan. Hideyoshi immediately seized the advantage by securing the heights of Tennozan; his vanguard then maneuvered to face the Akechi forces along the Emmoyji river. Mitsuhide's forces made a failed attempt to force Hideyoshi from Tennozan. Hideyoshi's general, Ikeda Nobuteru moved to reinforce Hideyoshi's right flank, which soon crossed Emmoyoji and turned the Akechi flank. Simultaneously, Hideyoshi's forces marched against the Akechi front; this started a rout, only two hours after the battle had begun.

Mitsuhide's reign as shogun lasted only 13 days. Upon fleeing Yamazaki, Mitsuhide died en route to Sakamoto.

He is rumoured to have been killed by a peasant warrior by the name of Nakamura with a bamboo spear; however, there were also rumors that he was not killed, but rather started a new life as a priest called Tenkai.

*Reasons for betrayal*

No one knows the specific reason that Mitsuhide betrayed Nobunaga, but there are several theories:

1) Personal ambition - Mitsuhide had grown tired of waiting for promotion under Nobunaga or had grown tired of being under another's authority.

2) A personal grudge:During the battle at Yagami Castle, 1575, Mitsuhide's mother died for Nobunaga's cause.

3) Nobunaga accused Mitsuhide of superficially praising his allies after their victory over the Takeda and physically kicked him.

4) While staying at Azuchi Castle, Ieyasu Tokugawa complained about the food he was served. Nobunaga responded by throwing Mitsuhide's priceless dinnerware into the garden pond.

5) Nobunaga asked him to - a legend states that Nobunaga asked Mitsuhide to strike him down if he were ever to become too ruthless, and the Incident at Honnō-ji is Mitsuhide fulfilling this promise.

6) Tricked by Hosokawa Fujitaka - Fujitaka, his son-in-law, was said to have promised aid to Mitsuhide but in actuality was reporting the plot to Hideyoshi.

7) He was asked to - one theory is that he was asked or influenced to betray Nobunaga byMori Terumoto, Tokugawa Ieyasu, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Ashikaga Yoshiaki, Nohime, the Shimazu clan or Emperor Ogimachi.

8) Protecting the Imperial Court. One theory supposed Nobunaga may have abolished the Imperial Court in Kyoto, when he no longer needed it. Akechi Mitsuhide, who was before his treason seen as an honorable samurai, and had been a retainer to both Nobunaga and the Ashikaga Shogunate, asked his lord to guarantee the safety and honorific position of the Court, or at least for the Emperor. Nobunaga who was a fearless daredevil and had the habit of not expressing himself very clearly (because of spies and other traitors, he acted this way because his generals knew him the best and were thus able to understand his will) may have allowed uncertainty to persist regarding his project for the Court. Then Mitsuhide doubted Nobunaga, and slayed him to protect the Emperor and Japan's History.

9) Dairokuten Mao'ō (Demon King of the Six Heavens) was a title bestowed by the shocked people of Japan over Nobunaga's many abuses and tyrannical rule, and he himself used it to mock his opponents. In Buddhist interpretations of Shuten Dōji's tale, the Oni overlord Shuten Dōji was also regarded as the incarnation of Dairokuten Maō, while Emperor Ichijō was considered an avatar of Miroku Bosatsu (Maitreya) and the demon slaying hero Minamoto no Yorimitsuas an avatar of Daiitoku Myōō (Yamantaka). In the fourth generation, a descendant of Raikō, Minamoto-no-Mitsunobu, came to the district of Mino where he took the name of Toki. The Toki clan was his descendant, and Mitsuhide through them, or so he may have believed himself. Thus, combined with various reasons (protecting the Imperial Court, protecting Buddhism, seeking glory and wealth, personal discontent...), Mitsuhide decided to slay the demon king Nobunaga. Coincidentally, Nobunaga burned Hiei-zan the sacred mountain of Buddhism, which was previously the lair of Shuten Dōji, which he fled for Ōe-yama out of his hatred for Buddhism and the monk Saichō who just built his temple there.

*Hosokawa Gracia*(1563 – 25 August 1600) She is known for being the daughter of Akechi Mitsuhide, the wife of Hosokawa Tadaoki, and a Christian convert. She was named Tama at birth; Garasha, the name by which she is known in history, is based upon her Catholic baptismal name,Gracia.

She married Hosokawa Tadaoki at the age of sixteen; the couple had five or six children. In the Sixth Month of 1582, her father Akechi Mitsuhide betrayed and killed his lord, Oda Nobunaga, making the teenage Tama a traitor's daughter. Not wishing to divorce her, Tadaoki sent her to the hamlet of Midono in the mountains of the Tango Peninsula, where she remained hidden until 1584. Tadaoki then took Tama to the Hosokawa mansion in Osaka, where she remained in confinement.

Tama's maid was from a Catholic family, and her husband repeated to her conversations with his Christian friend Takayama Ukon. In the spring of 1587 Tama managed to secretly visit the Osaka church; a few months later, when she heard that Toyotomi Hideyoshi had issued a proclamation against Christianity, she was determined to be baptized immediately. As she could not leave the house, she was baptized by her maid and received the Christian name "Gracia".

In 1595 Tadaoki's life was in danger because of his friendship with Toyotomi Hidetsugu, and he told Gracia that if he should die she must kill herself. When she wrote asking the priests about the plan, they informed her that suicide was a grave sin. However, the danger passed.

The death of Hideyoshi in 1598 left a power vacuum with two rival factions forming:Tokugawa Ieyasu in the east and Ishida Mitsunari in the west. When Ieyasu went to the east in 1600 leading a large army, including Tadaoki, his rival Ishida took over the impregnable castle in Osaka, the city where the families of many of Hideyoshi's generals resided. Ishida devised a plan to take the family members hostage, thus forcing the rival generals either to ally with him or at least not to attack him.

However, when Ishida attempted to take Gracia hostage, the family retainer Ogasawara Shōsai killed her; he and the rest of the household then committed seppuku and burned the mansion down. The outrage over her death was so great that Ishida was forced to abandon his plans. Most Japanese accounts state that it was Gracia's idea to order Ogasawara to kill her. But according to the Jesuit account written right after her death, whenever Tadaoki left the mansion he would tell his retainers that if his wife's honor were ever in danger, they should kill her and then themselves. They decided that this was such a situation; Gracia had anticipated her death and accepted it.
