Grey's Anatomy: When I Get to the Border (19x05)

Well then, I guess we know why Meredith won't be around much for the rest of the season!

Cons:

This episode was odd, it felt like an outlier that arrested the progress of certain key arcs. This was the first episode all season where I felt kind of "meh" about the new interns, and that's because we spent all our time focusing on Lucas Adams, and how his co-workers think he and Amelia are sleeping together. I thought that a was funny and potentially dramatic little wrench to put into the works when it first happened, the classic lie that grows out of control. But now we've got this whole thing where it's tied up in Lucas being a disappointment to his family and trying to stake out his own identity... and I'm just kind of bored with it all. What's going to happen when the others learn that he's Amelia's nephew? Well, nothing much, probably. They'll all judge and/or shun him for being a legacy kid, instead of for sleeping with an attending. Who cares.

Catherine Fox has never been a favorite of mine. When I saw that Jackson and Tom Koracick (my beloved fave) were going to be in this episode, I got really excited. But Tom's entire purpose was to talk to Catherine about her cancer, which has come back and is probably going to kill her this time around. I don't dislike Catherine to the point of wishing for her death, but god am I sick of the back and forth on this. She's had cancer for years now, we're constantly waiting to see if this is when she'll finally succumb to it. Can we not give Richard a break? He's lost every woman he's ever loved to sickness. I'm getting tired of this.

Also, I rather like the Zola and Meredith stuff, I don't actually have a problem with it in concept, but I do find it odd that the entirety of last season was this big will-she-won't-she game for Meredith about whether or not she'd move away from Seattle. And then the answer was "no". And now the answer is "yes", but for an entirely new reason that was just sprung on us a couple episodes ago. I don't know, it just feels weird from a pacing point of view. At the same time, I'm grateful I didn't have to hang out with Mr. Boring Nick this week, so whatever.

Pros:

Despite being sort of annoyed about Catherine, I was still really delighted to see my guy Tom Koracick. I don't know why I love him so much, I think he's just so... different from any other character they've ever had on the show, in this undefinable way. I find the performance to be charismatic and complex, I think he's funny, and I think he and Teddy would have been a way better relationship than anything she's ever had with Owen. (As a bonus "pro" of this episode, there were no Teddy and Owen scenes to suffer through. Huzzah!)

I liked seeing Zola light up with interest and joy at being exposed to a more gifted student environment. But I also liked how she was worried that it wouldn't be a cure-all to their problems. What if they move to Boston, and Zola keeps having panic attacks? Meredith is a good mom, telling her that she's extraordinary no matter what, and that she doesn't have to worry about all the what ifs. She wants to move here and go to this school, and Meredith is going to make that happen for her kid. We're really hammering it home that Meredith is being the mother for her own children that she never got to have with Ellis.

In conversations with Jackson, we also give Meredith another super compelling reason to move, and that's Jackson's research money that might lead to some innovative new opportunities in hunting for a  Alzheimer's cure. I really like this for her character, it seems like an appropriate way of sending her off for a time, kind of like how they wrote off Cristina to explore future scientific advancements overseas. If we can't have Meredith around, this feels like an okay way to lose her for a while. I like that as a direct counterpoint to the way her mother behaved, we see Meredith moving heaven and earth to be there for her daughter and make sure Zola is being cared for. But her identity as a doctor isn't erased either.

The other big plot thread of this episode was extremely heavy, and also heavy-handed, but I think it still worked beautifully. We see Addison and Bailey volunteering to help at a reproductive health clinic. They are tasked with picking someone up from across the border into Idaho where the rules are a little more questionable, to assist with terminating an ectopic pregnancy. On the way back, the woman begins bleeding profusely, the ambulance is stuck because of a traffic jam and does not arrive, and the pregnant mother of a young girl, who was hoping for another child, dies tragically. All because her OBGYN wouldn't treat her, for fear of breaking the law by ending a pregnancy.

Obviously this episode is preaching to the choir in terms of how I already feel about abortion and reproductive health care in general, but I do think it's important to show this kind of story, to acknowledge the full horror of what's happening in our country right now. They show Bailey and Addison as incredibly compassionate, skilled medical professionals who are always excited and eager to help people through their wanted pregnancies, but who also have no qualms about the moral rightness of a person's right to make their own decisions. It's simple, or at least it really ought to be. And it was brutal, watching this woman talk about all the things in her daughter's life that she didn't want to miss, listing out the fullness of experience that she will now miss getting to see. It was an abject tragedy, and I really felt the weight of it.

So that's all for now: next week we're already at the mid-season finale of Grey's, apparently. That came really quickly! I hope we get to check in with Schmitt, I missed him this week. I hope we do not get to check in with Teddy and Owen, unless we get an update on Leo. Where are the kids, anyway?

If I Can’t Have You

Link’s fingertips were beginning to blister. He’d been practically glued to the guitar in an attempt to escape the chaos of Meredith’s place. He heard Amelia lie down behind him. He wasn’t upset with how their conversation had gone but he was feeling guilty for snapping at her. Despite what he’d said about preferring to keep his feelings bottled up inside, he probably should’ve had this conversation with her before he’d gotten so upset. He gave his fingers a break as he started strumming, softly humming the beginning of a melody he’d been working on. He chuckled imagining himself teaching Scout’s pudgy fingers to hold a chord. He might have to start the little guy with piano first to get an idea of reading music before throwing him into guitar. He’d gotten to the part of the song that was unfinished and decided that he was too tired to work on it. He turned to Amelia who was fast asleep behind him. Link pushed away the hair that had fallen in front of her face and kissed her forehead. Amelia stirred slightly.

“Over already?” She mumbled, her voice slurred with exhaustion.

“Someone’s tired,” Link chuckled.

“I know it sounds selfish but I don’t know how much longer I can handle the four of them. I think I’ve done more schoolwork today than I did when I was actually in school,” she yawned, motioning for Link to pull her into his lap.

“Yeah, for everyone’s sake, I hope she’s home soon,” Link muttered, kissing her neck absentmindedly as she rested her head on his shoulder.

“Did you hear about Koracick?”

“Nope, what’s going on?”

“He tested positive too,” Amelia sighed. “Apparently a ton of residents have gotten it and recovered and he isn’t showing symptoms. It’s just crazy how differently it affects everyone. I’m worried for Tom. He doesn’t do well in isolation.”

“What do you mean?” Link asked, always surprised by how Amelia always defended the guy despite when he acted like a jerk.

“I’ve just seen him in a dark place before,” she explained. “When his son died. Tom has a big heart and he never wants to burden everyone. He left for a while but Tom doesn’t do well alone and I think it got to him.   It’s just hard seeing everyone hate on him all the time. He shouldn’t have gotten involved but I can see how much he loves Teddy.” Link raised his eyebrows, Amelia rarely brought up drama at work, especially when it pertained to other couples. “I know what Teddy and Owen have is very special.” Amelia shifted uncomfortably. “Obviously enough to ruin what I thought Owen and I had.” She paused. “Which turned out to be for the better but Tom doesn’t chase after just anyone. I haven’t seen him look at anyone like that since his wife.” She shook her head, confused by what she was trying to say. “I don’t know I’m just worried about him…and Mer. It’s scary to think that I could’ve already seen them for the last time.” Link didn’t know how to comfort her. He could think of a ton of positive things to say but not one that Amelia would refrain from rolling her eyes at. He hadn’t let himself think of what would happen if Meredith really didn’t make it. He couldn’t imagine what it would do to Amelia.

“I could make us some tea and we could go shower or something,” he offered instead. He could tell Amelia was starting to get anxious. Amelia nodded in response before lifting the baby monitor to her ear.

“I can hear him starting to fuss. He passed out before I had the chance to feed him tonight so he’s probably hungry,” she sighed. “I’ll meet you upstairs?”

“Sounds good,” Link replied, watching his sleep deprived girlfriend hardly make it up the stairs. “Why don’t you take a quick nap and climb the rest later.” He called to her as she almost missed a step.

“Shut up,” she laughed.

As she placed a sleepy Scout back into his crib she couldn’t help but linger as her adorable son curled up into a little ball and gurgled sleepily. “You are just perfect.” She shook her head in disbelief. “Your daddy and mommy are very lucky.”

“They are,” Link surprised her as he peeked over her shoulder to admire their soundless boy. He passed her the cup of steaming tea and led her quietly out of the room. “I was expecting the transition to the new room to be harder.” “He was probably sick of us.” The couple stepped into the shower and prayed that none of the kids would be woken up by the noise. Link complained as Amelia, as per usual, hogged the place under the shower head. She shrugged, telling him he had the option to shower alone if it bothered him that much. To which Link had grinned and pulled her in close to him, stepping under the hot stream of water as Amelia laughed in surprise. He stepped out first, allowing Amelia to wash her hair as he retrieved two towels from the laundry room down the hall. He found her standing in front of the mirror, an upset expression stretched upon her face.

“What’s up?” He asked.

“Nothing,” she jumped slightly, not expecting him to be there. She accepted the warm towel from his outstretched hand and wrapped it around her tightly. She noticed his concerned expression and sighed. “I just wasn’t planning on keeping the baby weight on but with the virus and having four kids to take care of, I haven’t really had the chance to get a workout in.”

“Amelia, you look beautiful,” Link shook his head, surprised he even had to tell her that. “There’s no one to impress anyways.” Amelia raised her eyebrows and scoffed. “You can’t seriously be referring to me. I haven’t seen a gym in weeks.”

“Exactly!” Amelia huffed. “Look at you.”

“Amelia.” Link couldn’t help but roll his eyes. “You’re being ridiculous.”

“Whatever,” she muttered, storming past him and into their bedroom.

“Hey! Don’t whatever me.” Link followed her, accidentally stepping on Bailey’s toy car and collapsing into their bed. “Fuck.” He could hear Amelia giggling. “Don’t laugh,” he tried to sound stern but he could hear the weakness in his voice. “It hurts.”

“Oh my poor baby,” Amelia teased. “Can I do anything?”

“Now that you mention it,” Link looked up at her cheekily.

“You’re too much,” Amelia laughed. She threw on one of his t-shirts and joined him in bed, trying to jokingly examine his foot without bursting into laughter. “I don't know, babe. You might have to call in an orthopedic surgeon.” Link threw a pillow at her in response, which she ducked easily.

“I hate you.” 

“You love me,” Amelia grinned. Link’s fake scowl softened. 

“Very much,” he admitted. “Now come lie down before we’re out of sleeping pillows.”

“Whose fault is that?” 

“Mine.”

No matter what

Hey Omelia-Fans :) What if Amelia´s baby was Owen´s, not Link´s? I had the idea for this Oneshot a while ago and finally I wrote it.  It´s placed somewhere between episodes 16x12 and 16x13. I hope you´ll like it!

Amelia stared at the test results in her hand shocked. It was Owen´s. Her baby was Owen´s. She had mentally prepared for this before, but now that it was real, it hit her hard anyway. What should she do? She had to talk to Owen. And to Link. God, Link! He would be so diappointed. What if he didn´t want to be with her anymore? He had made it clear that the baby being Owen´s would be a problem for him. And Owen? He had his family. He was happy with Teddy, Leo and Allison, and she didn´t want to mess this up. So this baby could not be his; it would make everything more difficult. She could pretend that it was Link´s, she thought, but she immediately rejected the idea. That was not fair, Owen and Link both had the right to know the truth. So she had to talk to them soon, although she was afraid of it; she couldn´t hide from them anymore. But what if - Her phone rang, before she could think this thought to the end. She had gotten a message from Bailey. Car accident. She needed to go.

After she operated on a teenage-boy with a bad skull fracture, she searched for Maggie. But instead, as fate would have it, she ran into Owen. „Hey.“, he said. She stared at him for some seconds but then forced herself to say something. „Owen...h-hey. What are you doing here? What about the Seattle Pres?“, she asked nervously. „Well, I might get my job back.“, he said, „If Koracick will hire me.“ „Why wouldn´t he do that?“, Amelia asked distracted. „Oh I don´t know, I don´t know because he´s not letting me have my job interview…“, Owen answered ironically. Amelia just nodded, not really listening to him. Owen frowned. „Amelia? Come on, you have to support me! This man is an ass.“, he complained jokingly. „Yeah, I´m totally supporting you“, she said and nodded. „Wait, who is an ass?“ Owen rolled his eyes. „What´s going on?“, he then asked. „W-what? Nothing.“, she said innocently. „Come on, you´re totally distracted.“, he replied. That was her chance. Amelia waited some seconds, then looked around and took his arm. She pulled him behind her into the staircase. „Okay, we need to talk.“, she said, forcing herself to go through with the confession now. Owen raised an eyebrow questioningly. He hadn´t expected that it had to do something with him. „I´m pregnant...“, she said. „Yeah, I know.“, he answered slowly. „Right, I mean I´m 24 weeks pregnant.“, she tried to make him understand. Owen shook his head confused. „And?“, he said. Amelia looked away, thinking about what to say next. Owen was making it really hard for her, to tell him the truth. „Owen, I´m 24 weeks pregnant, not 20, like I was assuming the whole time.“, she began. As he didn´t say anything, she continued: „It´s… not...Link´s baby. It´s yours.“ Owen stared at her, processing Amelia´s words. Then he inhaled sharply. „Are… you serious?“, he said shocked. Amelia pressed her lips together and nodded. „I did a paternity test...I´m sorry.“, she almost whispered.                                                „I… I mean – I don´t know what to say, Amelia.“, he said honestly after a while. „You don´t have to.“, Amelia replied and faked a smile. But the truth was that she wanted him to be happy about their baby. „I just wanted to tell you the truth. You don´t have to fulfil any obligations, Owen. I know that you already have a family.“, she said understandingly and turned around slowly. „Amelia, wait.“, Owen stopped her and touched her shoulder. „You know that I´m here for you and the baby. I´m...It just came very unexpectedly. We´ll have to figure some things out.“, he said taking her hand. „Yeah.“, she laughed nervously, „The next step would be talking to Link. Wish me luck.“ „You haven´t talked to him?“, Owen said surprised. „No.“, Amelia admitted, „I more afraid of talking to him than I was before talking to you.“ „He will understand it.“, Owen gave her confidence. „Well...I´m not so sure about that.“, Amelia said depressed. „What? Why? He has to. I mean...It´s not your fault...It´s rather mine.“, he said and Amelia laughed. „Watch out, I´ll blame you for everything. Maybe Link gives me a chance then.“ „I´m totally fine with that.“, Owen replied, also laughing. Then his face got serious again and he took a step toward her. „It must be hard for you, too, I know. Maybe it´s not that what we both expected, but it´s not a bad thing. We´re having a baby.“, he said and smiled slightly. Amelia looked into his eyes. „Yes, we are.“, she said and nodded. Then Owen pulled her in his arms. „We can handle this.“, he said confidently. „We will.“, Amelia agreed. And she was sure they would. Because Owen would always be there for her, no matter what.

Grey’s Anatomy 16x03 Final Thoughts

Amelia and Link:

I fall in love with them more and more each week okay bye

This episode is full of cute, adorable moments of these two. I know this is Grey’s and nothing is ever super-smooth, but my one wish is that they navigate all the bumps together – or, better yet, they just have a peaceful pregnancy. God knows Amelia deserves it. 

Also, I am loving them talking about feelings (including their fears) so openly. Amelia’s growth, in particular, has been so, so good over the past two seasons. I hope this momentum keeps going. And Link? He’s perfect, in every way. They’re so good for each other and will make amazing parents to their child. 

Jo, Meredith, and Bailey:

I was so happy watching at Jo doing a complicated surgery by herself :) Well, except for the fact that Meredith was watching remotely, which…is weird. I don’t know. I understand why, of course, considering how against the surgery the patient was, but having a doctor who was recently fired join a surgery via FaceTime would probably never slide in a real hospital, and if KV was really sincere about giving Meredith actual consequences of her actions, she wouldn’t have written this plot so that Meredith still gets to do what she wants. 

Look. I understand the loyalty these interns/residents have for Meredith, but  Qadri was really getting on my nerves. I think part of it was because she was Jo’s resident today, and spent the whole time complaining instead of helping out her attending. While Bailey definitely overreacted, and I hope Qadri getting fired isn’t permanent, I can’t say I’m surprised. Side note: I really hope Bailey goes back to having storylines that don’t involve her scolding people all day.

Nico, Levi, and Deluca:

If you read my recaps last season, you know that Nico is…not a favorite of mine, to put it lightly. After an entire season, he has barely any character development besides “He’s Gay” and “He’s Dating an Intern.” That being said, I actually liked him this week, from how he jumped in to help Link and Amelia with their patient to making sure Levi stopped putting himself down. 

Speaking of Levi, though, he is really starting to get on my nerves. This guy has been a resident for quite a while now; he should know better than to make such a simple mistake. It was funny in the beginning, but him acting as “Glasses” is really, really getting old. 

And as for how Deluca dealt with him, every other time a resident/intern screwed up on their superior’s watch, the superior took the fall, including when it came to talking to the patient’s family. Responsibility is responsibility, and it’s clear that Deluca just cares about doing the right thing in front of his boss.

Miscellaneous:

I have to admit, I skipped over all the Teddy/Owen and Jackson/Vic scenes again this week, so I don’t really know what’s going on with either of them. One thing I do have to say for Jackson/Vic, though, is that if Grey’s really cared about writing good storylines, they wouldn’t rely so heavily on Station 19 to further their plot points.

The way this restraining order thing is playing out is ridiculous. There are more productive ways to abide by the order than having Koracick kick Owen out of the ER every five minutes. It’s annoying.

Maggie and Amelia’s patients being long-lost lovers is cute, but it has been done a billion times already (although I don’t mind. Just a stray observation).

Casey, my favorite intern and the only one I can tolerate tbh is back! 

The first time I saw Jo’s patient’s red hair, I immediately thought “April’s back,” so uh that's how deep my denial is a year-and-a-half later, I guess

New main character for Season16

I think we all want our favourite character to gain Main character status (if they aren’t already) . Mine is Nico & Levi. But the truth is, it’s a bit difficult to them especially Nico.

- Tom Koracick have potential since He is love interest for Teddy and can can interac with Owen, Amelia and many more. His screentime also increase in second half of s15 too. (I stll don’t like him. I just don’t like his personality & attitude in general)

- Atticus Lincoln start with Meredith love interest. Even now he lost that status but look like he gain that opportunity with Amelia instead and he also share scene time with other main character in general. So writer can give Link a story with anyone they want.

- Levi Schmitt also likely get promote to main chatracter. His character has deveopment so much this season. He also now have both love & work storyline. Levi can be use as new LGBT main character after absent them for years too.

- Nico Kim let face the truth, he has less scenetime compare to other four candidate. He also mostly share proper moment with only Levi and Link who also recurring characrter not main.

I heard that Grey’s have “too many main characte problemr” before. If they ever promote new main character next season, I think it will happen to only 1 character. And that one is not Nico (even I like to see him as main character). At best I think he will get more scenetime if new main character is Levi or Link.

Except, some of current main character die and/or leave Grey sloan memorial. And I heard that everything can happen at the end of season.

My take on Amelia’s homecoming after 14x04. May your eyes not bleed ;))

Three weeks had passed since her surgery. She’d made progress and been “overly” active. Koracick hadn’t cleared her for normal work, such as surgery, but she’d been over at the hospital earlier to retrieve some files and do some consults,

Owen had come too.

He had told her about the kiss with Teddy. At first, she’d been sad and mad, but she hadn’t yelled. She knew she’d pushed Owen away and practically ending their union. She knew she was part of the wreckage that was their marriage.

So, she had felt a lot of self-loathing, for hurting the man she loved, and for not realizing she was fucking everything up.

But he had made mistakes, too. They both had so many emotions and thoughts. The tumor had shaken everything. Who were they now? Who was she?

She knew she loved him, with everything she was, but would he love her now? He’d married a tumor. The small touches, the longing glances, were they meant for the old her?

It was a quiet Wednesday afternoon, they were doing the dishes together and had all the time in the world. She was washing and he was drying and placing everything back to their place. His front brushed slightly against her back as he went to grab another towel. Small butterflies moved in her stomach, she missed being close to him. He’d finally moved into their bed room after a handful of days on the couch.

“If you don’t sleep in this bed, I will sleep on the couch,” she’d threatened and it had worked.

A couple of mornings she’d woken up earlier than him, staring at him sleeping, memorizing every line and feature in his face. He’d laid on his stomach with his mouth slightly open.

He’d looked so peaceful and content. He was handsome, there was no denying that. Amelia had done well for herself, even with a tumor in her head.

“Amelia?” his voice called and she stared down at the empty soapy water and smiled shyly. She’d been completely in another world.

She emptied the sink and they both dried their hands. Like a slow dance they moved to the couch, Amelia first and then Owen. He turned the TV on and then settled with an arm over the back of the couch. She couldn’t resist laid her head on his shoulder. She was so tired, but felt so very alive. They were both quiet, staring at the TV.

“I love you, you know?” she whispered into his shirt and sighed.

“Hmm?” Owen replied, clearly not paying attention. He looked down at her and smiled confused.

“I said, I love you,” she repeated and carefully smiled back.

His face turned into a soft expression, she had no idea exactly what he was thinking. Amelia sat straight up and stared at him for a second. He moved closer.

His hands cupped her face softly and he pressed his mouth onto hers. She responded with slowly kissing him back. And there it was again, their little dance.

They both needed to take a breath and broke apart. She bit her lips and moved onto his lap, whilst taking off her shirt.

“Amelia,” he whispered, but she saw the longing in his eyes. And also felt his erection pressing under her.

She kissed him forcefully and they were back into their dance. His shirt was off soon enough. And her pants disappeared. Not long after they were having sex for the first time again, on their couch.

They both laid naked on the couch with a blanket over them. He was stroking her hair gently and she focused on her breathing. Well, the sex was definitely not the tumor - that was real.

“I love you, too,” Owen whispered and planted a kiss on her head. How did he know, though? She didn’t ask and they didn’t say anything else that night. They laid in each other’s arms for what felt like minutes, but in reality, was actually hours. Both of them cherished the quiet moment together, pretending the chaos in their lives wasn’t there.

Amelia fell asleep first and dreaming peacefully, he carried her into their bedroom and tucked the covers over them. His wife stirred, but didn’t wake. He then held her close till he, too, fell asleep. She was beautiful in every way possible. So complex and complicated, but this gorgeous woman was his.
