The bright sun shone through the large windows of the waiting room at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital as you paced nervously in the waiting room. The thought of the upcoming check-up with Dr. Addison Montgomery made your heart beat faster even though you repeated this year after year. Despite your fears, you knew it was important to get regular checkups, especially after you noticed some unusual symptoms.
When you were finally called, you followed the nurse through the corridors of the gynecological clinic until you finally stood in front of the door to the treatment room. Once inside, Dr. Montgomery greeted you with a warm smile. "Welcome back, y/n. How are you today?"
You forced a smile, concern for your health and life's obstacles overshadowing your usual demeanor. "Thanks, I'm feeling okay so far. I'm here for a checkup because I've noticed a few symptoms that are worrying me."
Addison nodded understandingly and asked you to take a seat. However, as she began to ask the usual questions, she immediately noticed that something was wrong. Your posture was stiff, your answers were short, and you seemed uncomfortable. Quite the opposite from the last times she had seen you. "Can you tell me about the symptoms you've been noticing lately?" She asked softly and you hesitated for a moment before answering. "Well, I have unusual pulling and pressure in my abdomen. I feel very tired in general but I think that's probably just normal."
The redhead frowned slightly as she began to do the examination. When she gestured with her hand to ask you to sit on the exam chair, you flinched and promptly avoided making eye contact with her. "I´m sorry..." you simply interjected and as you continued to sit on the chair, Addison felt an inexplicable restlessness arise within her.
She watched you carefully as she took swabs and checked to see what was going on. As she did so, she recognized subtle signs of fear and insecurity manifesting in your behavior that she had never seen in you before. It was as if there was something in the air, something unspoken, standing between them and demanding their attention. She could practically feel the tension surrounding you, and her instincts told her that there was more going on here than what seemed like a checkup.
After she had also completed an ultrasound on you, Addison sat down on the lounger next to you and quickly decided to ask carefully. "I want to be honest with you. I noticed some signs during the exams that could indicate something might be wrong. I think it might be helpful if you talked about it." She murmured questioningly, placing a soothing hand on your thigh, making you jump at the touch as well.
You looked at her in surprise, your eyes fixed on her with relief. But only hesitantly did you begin to talk about your concerns, which went far beyond the physical symptoms. "Promise you won't tell anyone?" The person you spoke to nodded at you, giving you time to express yourself. She sensed that there was more here than your body had yet revealed, and she wanted to give you the opportunity to open up when you were ready. "I'm your doctor, y/n. Everything you tell me is confidential."
You swallowed hard before finally finding the courage to say the words you had suppressed for so long. "It's my father," you began hesitantly and the gynecologist listened attentively without interrupting. "Since the pandemic and losing his job, he's... he's not exactly... friendly to me."
The reticence and fear had crumbled as you revealed the truth about your home situation to her. You confessed to the constant insults, humiliation and physical abuse you endured from your father and Addison continued to listen intently, offering you an empathetic embrace of comfort and support as you revealed the painful details of your abuse.
When you finished, an oppressive silence fell across the room. Addison felt the weight of your words on her own shoulders. She felt powerless in the face of the suffering you had to endure at such a young age, an inner anger boiling up towards your parents and at the same time a burning desire deep inside her to help you. "Thank you, y/n, for trusting me," she finally spoke in a quiet voice and rubbed your shoulder reassuringly. This time you didn't flinch. "What has been done to you and continues to happen to you is unacceptable and you deserve to be safe and protected. I will do everything in my power to help you get out of this situation."
The shock of what she had heard was deep within her, but she forced herself to remain calm and empathetic. Her first priority was to reassure you that you were safe and that she would help you. She hugged you gently and held you close to her, giving your tears a place to disappear. "Please believe me when I say that you are safe here," she began to speak to you calmly. "No one will hurt you in front of me and if it happens again, you come straight to me, okay?"
You lowered your gaze, tears glistening in your eyes as you let yourself fall into her embrace, feeling the instant warmth and comfort she offered you. For a moment you felt safe, surrounded by the care of this remarkable woman who was willing to stand up for you. “Thank you, Dr. Montgomery,” you whispered, your voice shaking. "It means so much to me to know I'm not alone."
Addison smiled softly and rubbed your back. "From now on it's Addison. I think we're past the formal part. And of course, I'll help you through the difficult times, and I'll be by your side as long as you need me."
At that moment, you knew you had made the right decision to reach out to her. You felt strengthened by her words and beneath all the vulnerability you showed there was also a spark of hope. Hope that you weren't alone, that there were people who cared about you and were ready to help you when you needed it. You felt relieved that you had confided in someone, and Addison promised to support you every step of the way, whether through further testing, therapy, or any other form of police or court help you needed.
As you left the office, you felt a little more confident with her personal phone number and address. Addison Montgomery, who promised to protect you if your father became abusive again and you needed a place to stay. You knew that from now on you were no longer alone but had found an ally in her in the fight against the darkness that surrounded you.
ᕚ---ᕘ
In the weeks that followed, Addison Montgomery and you developed a deep bond that went beyond the boundaries of an ordinary doctor-patient relationship. She had given you her personal address and phone number in case you ever had to run away from home and didn't know where to go. The gesture of care had touched you deeply and shown you that you were not just a patient, but now also had a friendship that you could rely on.
The conversations between the two of you became more and more open and intimate as you worked together to come up with a plan to get yourself out of the dangerous situation you found yourself in. And one Saturday morning, after you had escaped from your father's attacks and came to her, Addison offered to take you in and give you a safe haven, away from your parents' abuse and humiliation.
At first you were unsure whether you should accept the offer. The fear of the unknown, the worry of the consequences, and the fear of becoming too much for Addison held you back. But in the end, your trust, the hope for a better life and the love that she conveyed to you every day prevailed.
At midnight on that same warm spring night, you packed your few belongings and made your way to Addison's house. As you opened the door, a feeling of relief and freedom washed over you. The redhead welcomed you with open arms and a warm, loving smile that showed you that you were finally safe and that she would never let anything happen to you again.
Over the coming weeks and months, you began to settle into your new home, helping Addison with Henry while she was at work. Under her loving care, you slowly blossomed, gained self-confidence, and finally found the courage to leave your past behind you.
Addison supported you every step of the way in your healing, whether it was through therapeutic conversations, medical care, or just her unconditional love and support. Together you went through ups and downs, but you always stood by each other, determined to overcome the darkness together and step into the light of a better future. Your connection was strong, characterized by mutual respect, trust and love and you knew that you would be connected forever.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You ignore him, praying to whatever god is listening to keep him away from you.
Meredith and Christina notice the tension in your shoulders, sharing a look.
“You know I don’t care about a lot of people but, are you okay?” the curly haired female asks.
You shrug, acting as if nothing has changed. “I’m fine, why?”
Meredith chimes in. “You’re looking a little-“
“Squirrely?”
“I was gonna go with tense but squirrely works.”
You huff through your nose, “would you two shut up.” You hand the clipboard back to your favorite nurse, Marjorie. “I’ll see you tomorrow.” You spin around and walk out, not looking back.
Derek shakes his head, watching you basically run out of the hospital.
Mark glances behind him, not finding who he wanted and sighs. He looks up to see his friend and offers a small wave.
The ferry boat lover nods to acknowledge him.
The plastic surgeon bids the others goodbye and stands in front of the doors, thinking about everything that led him here.
You drive past him without realizing it as he thinks of your face when you caught him in bed with Addison.
His eyes trail on the car, wishing he could see you again and not just glimpses.
-
You roll your eyes and walk away across the bridge, not caring how unprofessional you look. “I’m not talking to you.”
He picks up his pace, following after you. “Please just-“
You scoff, spinning around to face him, “no, I tried before. I did and then,” you lean forward poking him in his chest, “you decided to stick your dick in someone else. Someone who was married and oh, yeah, not your girlfriend.” You cross your arms, “so, excuse me for not being particularly excited at the sight of you.”
“Fiancé.”
You blink once, furrowing your brows. “What?”
“I was,” he gulps. "I was going to propose to you that night.” He pulls the little black box out of his pocket, handing it to you.
”Before or after you screwed Addison,” you bitterly add, staring at the box. If you open it, that's giving him hope.
"I- she came to me and-“
You scoff hard enough for the vibrations to scratch your throat for a few seconds. “I cannot believe this- you- you think it’s okay to just- I’m done.”
“Please don’t,” he begs, eyes getting glossier the more you talk. “Don’t say it.”
Your bottom lip wobbles, removing your gaze from him. “I’m done with this, with us, and you. Now, you get to deal with the guilt. If you have any at all.” You slam the box in his hand and walk away.
Nothing could have prepared anyone at the hospital for this.
You know they’re all looking at you and it pisses you off. “What are you looking at?!”
Christina does damage control, stopping everyone from getting your wrath.
-
Meredith finds him in the on-call room, she was hoping to nap before joining in on a surgery but seems like the universe had other plans. ”You uh- okay?”
He fiddles with the box, staring at the diamond that taunts him. “Does it look I’m okay?”
She shrugs, “not really but it’s better than admitting you were stupid for messing things up with her.”
“My mistake brought Derek to you, didn’t it?”
“Why are you here?”
“If I go to Joe’s I’m going to sleep around, proving her point.”
“And staying here?”
“I don’t know where else to go. Derek is still upset with me, and I don’t blame him, but I know he loves you and I don’t need to hear a speech from him. I’m not ready for him to tell me I messed up more than any of us want to admit.”
“Why did you do it?”
“Do what?” He asks, finally looking up from the ring. “I was scared.”
“To,” she gestures to the ring.
“That and be a husband.”
“You weren’t scared of asking, it was the commitment that got you, I can understand it.”
“No, no," he shakes his head. "I didn’t think- I knew I wouldn’t be a good husband. I- everyone only saw the bad, my parents, Derek at times but she didn’t. She never did and that’s why I,” he lets out a tearful chuckle, “that’s why I fell for her. She saw the good no one else did and I screwed it up.”
Meredith hands him a tissue.
“You tell anyone about this, and I’ll let you observe one of my surgeries beside me.”
“I wasn’t but if you’re offering.”
The two chuckled.
-
Christina owlishly blinks, watching as you work on your last patient for the day as if nothing’s happened.
“How can she just put it all behind her?” George questions, sitting beside her.
“Having a nervous breakdown earlier in the day helps.”
“I feel like there should be someone sitting between us.”
The future cardiologist shrugs, “suit yourself.”
“You’re going to check on her after she’s done, right?”
“I’ll talk to her, if she opens up, good for her.”
A smile dances across his lips, happy that someone’s going to check on you; he likes you and admires your work, knowing you could be someone as well-known as Ellis Grey.
-
“Can you teach me your sutures?”
You ignore her and finish checking over your charts. “Yours are fine. Tell me the real reason you're bugging me.”
She purses her lips, not wanting to admit it out loud. “Are you okay?”
“You really want to know?”
She hesitates to nod. “I… do.”
“It sucks. Everything just… sucks. I don’t want to be here, but this is the only place that makes me feel calm.” You hand Marjorie the chart, smiling at her before returning to Christina. “I’m going to get through this. He’s going to find a nice girl and have the family he always wanted while I’ll still be here.”
“He’s going to go through girls like I go through tequila.”
“I know,” you grab your bag. “Which is why I know he’ll finally find his girl.”
She follows you until you reach the door. "What if it's you?"
A sad smile stretches across your lips. "He lost her."
”Forever?”
You shrug.
The resident stands there, unsure of what to do now.
-
You glance in his direction, wondering how many women he’s going to write down on the sheet. You hand yours back to Bailey, “I keep my life outside of work, unlike some people.”
Mark inwardly groans.
Bailey avoids making eye contact with him, she can’t continue to feel bad for him when he’s the one who messed things up (from what you told her).
You walk past the new residents, not in the mood to deal with them, especially with the girls fawning over Mark.
-
You sit down and watch his surgery, listening to the way he talks down to them.
You always told him he needs to slow down and be kind to them or else they won’t respect him but with everything that’s happened, you assume he’s a little bitter.
He always knows when you're watching and composes himself, but he can’t help and snap at the newbie (you don’t need to be talked about as if you’re a piece of meat). He glances up, catching your gaze.
You gulp, finding his soft expression he only used for you.
Everyone turns to you.
Two of the girls in orange start gossiping beside you.
“I have charts to look over. Come with me?” George asks.
You nod, finding it hard to keep your gaze off him but do so, only to inform the girls of some key information. “Keep talking like that and you two won’t find yourself off bedpan duty for a few months. Don’t talk about your superiors like that again."
The young faced one eyes widen and her face pales at your threat.
Mark can’t help but smirk behind his mask, always loving it when you straightened people out, if it was necessary.
-
"I see you two still aren’t talking.”
“Shut up, George.”
“Right, yeah. Got it.”
-
You try and ignore him again, which is when Derek steps in. “You should talk to him.”
“I know you two are all buddy buddy now, but I can’t do that. I can’t pretend like he didn’t break my heart in two. So, excuse me for ignoring your best friend."
He stops in front of you. “I need you to stop, think about this. What if you two don’t make amends and something happens? How would you feel? Think about how he would feel?”
“We’d be depressed, but eventually get over it, maybe be slutty for a few months and that’s the end of it.”
“That’s not a healthy way of dealing with your feelings and you know it.”
“I don’t care if it’s healthy or not. I have issues and I deal with them my way.”
“If you’d talk to him, maybe you’ll feel better.”
You roll your eyes and head into the prep station before you two head into surgery.
-
Bailey rolls her eyes, reaching for your phone. “Your phone keeps buzzing, doctor.”
You sigh, “does it look important?”
She leans closer, whispering, “it’s about your daughter.”
“Daycare or babysitter?”
“Babysitter. Fever, wants her mom.”
You take a deep breath and lean over to talk to your friend, “doctor Bailey’s going to take over. I need to go.”
“You’re leaving in the middle of a surgery?”
“I have to take care of something.”
“What?”
“My daughter.”
The staff in the OR got quiet, no one observing said anything.
You didn’t see the lights until it was too late.
-
“We got one adult in critical condition. One child with a minor bruising.”
Bailey and Owen are the first to arrive.
The woman’s eyes narrow to the familiar baby in Matt’s arms.
Owen steps forward. “What happened?”
“Car accident. Drunk ran a red light. Drivers side took more of the impact.”
“We need to get her checked out now.” The redhead pushes himself through, taking over one of the rooms. He tells the interns and fresh residents to prep a surgical room and put Christina on babysitting duty, leaving Jackson to follow him and Callie into the OR.
“I heard there was an accident,” Mark says, standing in the doorway. “I wanted to see if you needed any assistance?”
Callie glances at her ally in the room. “No, you should go check on Derek. I think I heard him calling for you.”
“When did he-"
“She’s coding,” Jackson interrupts.
“Crap! Avery, push one of epi.”
Everyone in the room prays for it to work and you to come back.
“Let me help,” he takes a step forward before being called away by one of the nurses.
-
He takes a sip of coffee, goes over the notes and overhears a few residents gossiping. His head whips in their direction. "Where'd you hear that?” He asks them, not accepting their answers.
They freeze. "Where did you hear that? Is she here?"
The group of residents’ glances at one another, unsure of what to say. "Who told you she's here?"
April had never worked with Mark before and seeing how freaked out he was over someone who wanted almost nothing to do with him, she felt bad; if someone she was in love with was hurt or worse, she'd want to know. "We- we saw her come in. They-"
He doesn't listen to anything else and takes off, running past Christina, who coddles the tear eyed, red faced toddler in her arms.
-
He runs straight towards Meredith, who's talking to Owen. "Where is she?"
The red head takes a step foward. "She's in surgery-"
"What room?"
"Sloan, you know I can't-"
He grabs Owen's scrubs by the collar and pulls him close. "I need to see her. I can't be here, waiting to see if she's dead or not. Tell me where she is."
The ex-vet slowly reaches for the man's hands. "Mark, I need you to calm down."
"How can I calm down when I just found out my fiancé is in surgery?"
-
Meredith takes a seat beside him, slumping against the wall, offering him a snack.
He shakes his head, closes his eyes and resting his head against the wall. "Have you heard anything?"
"No," she shakes her head. "I don't even know where she is."
"I just- what am I going to do if she's really-"
"Don't talk like that. She's not one to give up. She's-"
"A fighter?"
"Yeah."
Christina turns the corner, eyes wide. "Meredith?" She spots the two of them and runs towards them, inadvertently introducing your daughter to her father. "Mer. Mer. I need your help."
"Where did you get a baby?" She pushes herself off the floor. "Why do you have a baby?"
"Bailey put me on Kara duty and she won't stop crying."
"Whose baby, is it?"
That's when things got awkward.
Meredith's eyes widen, "no."
She nods.
Mark opens his eyes, glancing up. His eyes stop on the little girl, who glances his way.
She reaches for him. "Dada."
No one knew what to do.
"Oh my god," the two women muttered.
He pushes himself off the floor, staring at her. There's no mistaking it, she has your features, but she's got his eyes.
The little girl fusses in the woman's arms.
Mark easily slides her into his, his daughter settles into his arms, staring at him with those wide, curious eyes. "Mama?"
He gulps, "we have to wait a little bit before we see mama, okay?"
She nods and lays her head down on his chest.
He closes his eyes to keep his tears at bay, kissing the top of her head.
-
"She still loves you," Christina tells him.
He keeps his gaze on his girls and hums. "When you showed her the ring, she didn't say it was officially over for you two but she's still heartbroken over you and Addison getting together."
"I was getting ready to leave."
"What?"
"I grabbed my jacket and made sure I had the ring. I was- I wanted that night to go perfectly but then I opened the door, and she was there." He sighs.
"She let herself in and I tried to get her to leave but she wouldn't and then she kissed me. I told her I couldn't because I was about to become a proud married man," he bitterly chuckles.
"I told her no and she got upset because she knew she could always run to me but when she knew she couldn't anymore, she decided she wanted to love me. The way I wanted her to when we were younger. I accepted it, you know."
The woman nods.
"I accepted the fact that she chose Derek. He was a good choice."
"He was a safe choice, and she knew that."
Mark nods, "yeah and that's why I... tried to warn him before he proposed."
"You tried to warn him?"
"He's my best friend, I couldn't let him go into a marriage that was going to hurt him."
She chuckles, "that's ironic."
"Shut up, Yang."
"Go on."
"I gave into her because a part of me was scared- scared I was going to hear the rejection. No, I can't marry you because..."
"You're a manwhore?"
"Baby present and, yes. I didn't want my past to define my future but then, it did, and she left with Derek."
"Do you think Derek knew about," Christina gestures to the baby in his arms.
"Probably. I'm not happy I missed it but at least I know she had someone who could take care of her."
"Are you ever going to tell her?"
"If she'll listen."
Her pager beeps.
"Go, Yang. I'm not leaving."
Derek nods and steps into the room.
"You hear all that?"
His friend shrugs, "only the good parts."
"Funny."
"She was going to tell you before... everything happened but then she needed to get away and I did too-"
"So, she left without saying anything."
"If it means anything, she wrote a journal throughout the entire pregnancy, in case she passed, and Kara wanted to know about her mom."
He can tell by Mark's expression; he needs to explain.
"She was stressed throughout the entire pregnancy, and it was cause for concern. She had a few fainting spells and needed to stay home for a while. The doctor was making it seem like if she even went to the bathroom, she was going to lose Kara which scared her more than leaving you."
"Why?"
"If she lost Kara, it meant losing a piece of you which would have made her feel like it was officially over for the two of you."
Your heart monitor beeps. "Derek?"
His friend calms you down, checking you over before whispering that Mark and Kara are in the room.
You slowly turn your head, spotting them.
The father of your child smiles, relieved to see you awake. "Hey."
You spot your little girl tucked into his neck and tear up. You bring your hand up to your mouth to hide the sobs that want to escape.
Mark gestures for your guys' friend to exit so he can talk to you. He slowly pushes himself out of the chair, adjusting to the little girl. "Hey, hey," he brushes the few strands of hair out of your face, his thumb rubbing agaist your hairline. "What's going on in that pretty little head of yours?"
"I'm sorry."
He shakes his head. "Don't be. I'm just- I'm happy you're okay."
"I wanted to call you so many times."
"I know."
"I wanted you to be there."
"Where?"
"In the room," you whisper, staring into his eyes. "I didn't want her to be away from you but-"
He nods. "I know, I messed up. If I didn't- if it didn't happen, we could have been a family, and I will forever be sorry because you went through it alone."
Hearing your voice alerts the little girls’ ears and she squirms in his grasp.
He sets her feet on the open area near your arm, letting her turn around and launch herself into your arms. "Mama!"
"Oh, my sweet baby." You kiss the side of her head. "Mama missed you."
His heart swells at the sight of you two.
-
A few days later and you feel okay enough to be sent home.
You bid your goodbyes to everyone, even the newbies because they were nice enough to check in on you and make sure everything was okay. You step outside and take a deep breath.
"What do you think you're doing?"
A quiet moment ruined by your ex.
"I'm breathing, Mark. Can I do that, or do you need to make sure the weather's just right?"
He chuckles before getting out of the car. "You know your doctor gave you strict orders, I think you should be following them but that's just me."
You stare at him with a deadpan expression. "I got it, Mark. I know what I need to do, don't try and patronize me."
"I would never."
-
The residents huddle together, watching the two of you.
"How much do you want to bet that they're going to get back together?" Christina asks.
Jackson nods, "I'll take that bet."
Meredith stares at the two of them.
"You two are awful," April adds.
"Yes, but we'll be bad people with money," the future cardiologist tells her with a sarcastic smile.
Derek stops at the desk, taking a sip of his coffee before making his way to the group. "Okay, if we're all done gawking at two grown adults trying to move past their differences, can we get back to work?"
"You're no fun. I remember when you were having fun."
"You want to scrub in on my surgery, Dr. Yang?"
"Let's go have fun. See yah, Mer."
-
You make it through the door of your place and wait for it. "Say it."
"What?" He closes the door, setting the stroller by the door as he unbuckles Kara.
"I know you're judging, so, out with it. I'm not going to pretend as if you don't want to say something because you do."
"I don't," he notices the look you're giving him. "I... like it."
"You hesitated even finishing that sentence."
"I did not."
"Did too."
"Mama!"
You two glance down at the little girl, wanting attention and out of her father's grasp. You gently take her from him and wander into the kitchen, scouring through the cabinets to figure out what kind of things you could have as a snack.
This is what he wants, he wants this life: the one where you're not mad at him, and he can watch his daughter grow while you look amazing at being a mom.
He gulps down what little saliva he has in his mouth and takes a hesitant step closer to you. "What are we feeling?"
You hum, "I don't know, little miss here can't decide on what she wants."
"I can make something," he meekly offers, unsure if this is too much or not.
"What can you make? Last time I checked all you knew was protein smoothies and even then, that wasn't the best."
He scoffs, "I know how to cook, and you know it. You forget who made you dinner for our second date."
You open your mouth to respond but don't have it in you when you think about the good times you two had. Your gaze drops.
He feels bad but he can't pretend as if your romantic past doesn't exist. "I was so worried I messed up with that dinner."
"Really?"
"Of course, I was cooking for the most beautiful girl within a five-mile radius of my house. I was more than nervous."
"Good."
-
You step out of the room and start cleaning up, only for Mark to stop you and grab everything you pick up.
"I told you not to do anything. I got this."
You lean over the couch and watch him wander around your place. "Do you..."
"What?" He glances up, staring at you with kind eyes, wanting to hear what you have to say.
"Do you ever wonder what it would have been like if it didn't happen?"
"I know we'd be married with at least one other kid now."
"I'm serious."
"I don't want to focus on the past."
You scoff, rolling your eyes.  "Says the man who always wanted to ask about my exes."
-
You don't even know how it happened but here you are. You pull away, needing to breathe before continuing.
"Are you sure about this?"
You stare into his eyes, for what feels like an eternity. "I'm sure. I want this. Please," you beg.
His lips curve upwards, "who am I to deny you a fun time?"
You keep him at arm’s length, "that comment makes me want to rethink this whole thing."
"No, it doesn't."
You grumble and pull him back in for a kiss.
Meredith immediately closes the door, regretting not checking before opening. "Seriously you guys?"
You reach for your shirt and cover your mouth to hide your giggles, Mark turns to you with a smirk. "How do you know we weren't trying to invite you?"
"Because you know better."
Your eyes widen.
"Hey, Bailey," he says with a cool tone.
"You two better be out of there in the next five minutes or-"
You open the door and run past the two. "See yah, Bails. See yah, Mer."
Mark stays there flabbergasted at how quickly you ran out the door, leaving him to deal with her.
-
He closes the door just as you finish making dinner. "You are evil."
You stick your bottom lip out, "I don't think so, I made dinner. I'm going to be feeding you, I'd consider that to be something nice."
"You left me to deal with that- that woman alone."
"I left you with Bails, you were fine."
"I was not fine. I was far from fine."
You click your tongue, "stop exaggerating."
"I'm not and you know it."
"Okay," you groan. "I'm sorry. I left you with Bailey and that wasn't nice."
"It wasn't." He wraps his arms around your waist, resting his head on your chest.
"I said sorry, don't be like this."
"I think I'm going to need a little more in order to forgive you."
You lean into him as you settle into his arms.
The monitor goes off and you're brought back to the reality of you being in the arms of your ex.
You push yourself out of his grasp and walk towards her room. "Hey, pumpkin."
She holds her arms out for you.
You pick her up, "how's my little baby?"
She babbles a response. "Dada?"
"He's still here, checking on dinner. Your favorite."
"Maccheese!"
You chuckle, "yeah."
"There's my favorite girl," he smiles at the happy little girl.
You observe the way they interact with a heavy heart, knowing you can't continue doing this with him.
-
"What happened?" Christina asks, practicing new sutures on a banana.
"Nothing happened-"
"You're not sleeping with McSteamy, something happened."
"I just- I realized we need to not fall back into old habits."
"Do you still love him?"
You hesitate to answer.
"I'll take that as a yes."
"Of course, of course I still love him, but I can't be in love with him-"
"Because he was an adulterous whore?"
"Yeah."
"Have you seen him with anyone else?"
"I didn't need to see anything if all the girls talked about him?"
"Did you ever think maybe they lied? Maybe they're jealous of the fact that you have a hot guy fawning over you and only you. What else would they do other than gossip?"
"How am I supposed to believe that?"
"Have you ever talked to him?"
"I'm scared."
"So is he."
"I don't want to get hurt again."
"He wouldn’t want to lose you again."
"Christina?"
"Yeah?"
"You're wise beyond your years."
-
You run to him, pulling him into the break room.
He attempts to get up. "Shut up and let me talk."
You take a deep breath, "I want to be with you, like we were before but we're not those people anymore. And- and I want you to be in Kara's life so you can watch her grow up but this," you gesture between the two of you.
"This can only work if we're honest and you don't leave me for a quick lay or else, I will put you in an OR and change things about you. I will not put myself or Kara on the line if you're not going to give us your all."
He nods, taking in everything you've said. He pushes himself off the couch and walks towards you and pulls you in for a hug. "I'm never letting you go," he mumbles into your hair. "Living without you was the worst time of my life."
Mark pulls away, cupping your cheek, staring into your eyes. "If you let me into your lives, I promise not to mess it up because you two are too important to me and I don't know if I'd be able to live without you."
You sniffle, chuckling at his dorky smile. "Then don't be an idiot and kiss me."
-
"Finally," Christina turns around, pointing to everyone. "You all owe me money."
"Us."
"You owe Mer and I money."
Derek makes his way towards them. "What are we looking at?" He smiles, "good, it's about time he got his act together."

"Did you know that couples who co-habituate before marriage have are 48% more likely to have their marriages end in divorce?"
You froze in the doorway of Meredith's house. You hadn't even taken off your coat yet. Much less closed the door.
The house was dark. Candles everywhere. A table set for two in the living room. Romantic music in the background…and a projection screen.
"I…did not know that. What's going on?"
"Well, it's true. A study conducted by researchers in 2018 found that participants were less likely to divorce after the first year of marriage but more likely to get divorced later on down the line. Please sit."
You kicked the door shut and did as she asked, watching her flip through slides of graphs, charts and other research data. You hardly heard any of it. Izzie was resplendent in a pink dress. Her hair was curled and pinned up, her makeup carefully done. You felt as though you were sitting in the presence of royalty.
"--but," she continued, "another study conducted in 2018 concluded that cohabitation before marriage was actually linked to lower divorce rates." Izzie continued her presentation, clicking through an assortments of slides focused on the age of commitment, religion, and the ages, careers, and races of the of the studies participants and a bunch of other analytical mumbo jumbo that went in one ear and out the other.
Finally you couldn't take it anymore. "Izzie, baby, please," you huffed. "I…I am sure that a great deal of work has gone into all of this and I appreciate it but I don't understand what you're trying to say. We're not married and we don't live together. None of these studies apply to us!"
Izzie's throat bobbed, her eyes shining with tears.
Inside, you kicked yourself for making her cry. You held out your arms and she practically ran into them, perching herself on your lap. You kissed her arm, taking both of her hands in your own. "I'm sorry for making you cry, babe. I just… I need you to talk to me. Not at me."
Izzie sniffed, wiping her eyes dry on the back of her hands. "I know, I know. And you didn't make me cry I just… There haven't been a lot of things in my life that have gone right, you know? You are the most precious thing in the world to me and I don't want to lose you. There's no room for mistakes."
"Izzie, I don't want to lose you either but there's no such thing as perfection. This love, this life is what we make it. Not the data. If you want to move in together we can start looking right now. If you want to get married let's gas up the car and go to Vegas."
Izzie scrunched her nose. "Vegas? Is that really what you envision for your dream wedding?"
You shrugged. "Any wedding is my dream as long as I'm saying my vows to you."
You kissed her again and Izzie sighed as if in relief. "All I want is you, Y/N."

4 - What I Want
Tumblr media
Part 5
Feisty Coffee Girl
Izzie and I were walking in the grocery store getting some stuff that I needed for after I gave birth. I was almost five months pregnant. She pushed the shopping cart with me resting my hand on my belly. “So we need to get baby food, diapers, uh baby clothes.”
“Iz, I don’t really want to talk about this for a little bit.” I shake my head feeling tired about talking about this for months. She had put the baby up for adoption and began helping me get ready for when mine came.
She halted the cart on its tracks whipping her head back around at me. “Y/n, you have to prepare for when the baby comes. There’s a lot that goes into this.”
“Izzie, it’s not that I don’t know that. I’d just like some time to not talk about all this baby stuff.” I turned to face her.
My sister nodded, slumping her shoulders. “So what do you want to talk about instead?”
“Anything. You in medical school or your love life.” I throw my hands away from my sides.
Izzie sighed, clicking her tongue in thought before she answered my question. “I don’t have time to see anyone. Getting into medical school was extremely hard and expensive.”
“Urgh Isabol. You’re supposed to be the entertainment in my life.” I groaned, running my hands through my hair.
I hadn’t been able to do much since I had decided to keep the tiny baby growing inside of me. I wasn’t regretting my decision. I just wished that I could still have the life that I had fantasized growing up. “I’m sorry, sis. Look at it this way if I have something small or big to say you’ll be the first person I tell.”
“Deal, Iz.” I held up my pinky.
She looped hers with mine. “So what do you want from life exactly besides being there for your daughter?”
“I want love. Not some cheesy romance. I want something that is epic.” I sent her a grin and she matched my same type of expression.
Propping open the door to the coffee shop with my foot I led Eve inside by one hand. Closing the doors door behind us with my other hand. She didn't have school since it was a Saturday so I decided to take her to work with me instead of Caroline babysitting her. “Okay so what's the rule when you come to work with mommy?”
“Don't touch unless you say so and don't go with strangers.” Everly responded with me scooping her up and sitting her behind a chair at the cash register with me.
Moving into the back room I began typing the laces of my work aperen before the alarm flashed in the back room telling us we had someone at the register. Moving out of the back I came around the corner seeing a familiar face of a particular surgeon. “Dr. Sloan, are you following me or something?”
“I could be if you’d like to hear that.” He sent me a smirk waiting for me to come to the cash register.
Tucking hair behind my ear I noticed that Everly was over eyeing the desert and food case so he couldn’t tell she was with me. “Uh I guess you could. So what can I get for you today?”
“A bone dry cappuccino just like last time.” He answered my question.
I smiled, snapping my fingers at the doctor. “Consider it done, doc.” Spinning on my feet I disappeared to the back preparing the drink and mixing it all up in a coffee cup. Pressuring the lid down I carried it back to him.
“Thanks, my feisty coffee girl.” Mark takes the cup from my hand.
Shifting my gaze over his shoulder I watched Everly playing around at one of the tables by the window. She was using it as her own personal playground. “Will that be all?” I asked him softly.
“Sad I’m not bugging you with a more difficult order hmm?” Mark teased me by lowering the cup from his lips after taking a drink.
I snorted out a laugh. “Do you think I would enjoy you bugging me all the time.”
“Don’t know. Maybe you wouldn’t or maybe you would. I’m just in it for the adventure of our bet.” He shrugs his shoulders.
I bent my head down smiling at what he said. We had shared a few more dates and some drinks. Learning some things about the other yet he still didn’t know the biggest part of my life. I wanted to tell him but I was afraid that he wouldn’t want anything to do with me once he knew. “Ow! Mommy.”
“Eve - uh are you okay kid?” I quickly corrected myself before I let certain words slip out of my mouth.
Everly was sitting on the ground holding her left ankle when Mark turned towards her seeing she was hurt in some way. “Looks like she twisted her ankle to me.”
“Mommy.” Eve whined when I lowered myself down on my knees burying her face into my shoulder.
Whispering in her ear I rose to my feet holding her in my arms. “Sssh baby. You’ll be okay…we should get her to the hospital. I’ll call her mom and tell her what happened.”
“I thought she just called you mommy.” Mark pointed out.
Luckily I was quick on my feet. “Oh yeah. Me and her mom look alike sometimes so her little head gets confused.”
“Right. The hospital is just a short walk from here. I’ll take you guys there.” Mark offers holding open the door for me and we walked down the street after I grabbed my things and clocked out for lunch early to not get in trouble with my boss.
He let me go inside the front door first and I came into contact with a bunch of doctors in white coats moving around in such a quick fashion. “Excuse me, ma’am. Could you please take a look at her ankle?”
“Oh sure. Stevens check on my other patients for me.” A black woman who was shorter than me called, waving my sister over and sitting a stack of carts in her arms.
My twin nodded, sparing a glance between me and Mark before leaving. “Of course, dr. Bailey.”
“Tell me when her mom shows up. I’ll come check on you afterwards. Got to start my job.” Mark waved to me, beginning to walk away with him raising his cup up in the air. “Great service as always.”
“Wait, you didn’t pay for that.” It had hit me that I never fully finished his whole order after my daughter fell and hurt herself with my motherly instincts kicking in.
He chuckled with that charming smile. “I’ll make it up to you later!”
“How so?” I called back knowing Dr. Bailey was waiting behind me to check out my daughter’s ankle yet he was distracting me with his statement.
The man nicknamed McSteamy disappeared around the corner with nothing more to say, leaving me completely in awe. “You’ll just have to wait and see.”
Dr Bailey led me down one hallway having a room available for us. I halted briefly when someone else in one of the rooms we passed spoke out to me. “What’s wrong with your kid there?”
“Excuse me?” I paused, raising a brow at a guy with dark brown hair and eyes. He also had a nice smile even if it was a small one seeing a child hurt.
The stranger shifted in his bed asking me after he introduced himself. “I’ll start. I have a heart condition and my name is Denny Duquette.”
“Ah it’s nice to meet you, Denny. I’m hoping that she just has a sprained ankle.” I answered his question with a kind smile.
Denny nodded, tilting his head. “And what’s your name?”
“Y/n Stevens and this is my daughter Everly. Hopefully I’ll see you around outside of this place.” I finished our conversation meeting up with the doctor enjoying the conversation with him. Yet my mind wonders back to the fear I had years ago. Izzie and Everly were the only things constant in my life.
I barked stomping up to him, shoving him aggressively. "What happened to I love you, I'll always be there for you, you can trust me huh?"
“The baby can’t be mine.” Grady, my current boyfriend and father of my baby, was freaking out pacing in my family’s kitchen.
Running a hand down my face frustrated. “I gave you my virginity. You’re the only person I’ve ever been with, dumbass!”
He grunts hitting the countertop behind him. "I'm sorry but you could get an abortion if you don't it-"
"I would never do something like that. I absolutely want kids - I mean not this soon. But I am not doing that just because you don't want to change your life plans!" I cut him off almost heartbroken that he would suggest that.
He shook his head at me trying to defend himself. "Y/n, that's not what I meant...I only meant if you did it you could get your life back.”
"You know what, Grady. Just leave. You are a ladies man and an asshole. I don't want to see you anymore." I pointed towards the front door shoving him out.
He bowed his head to his feet but left with one final word. "I can’t be a teenage dad. See you around." Once he shut the door I started crying. Stomping around the kitchen I picked up one of my school books throwing it across the room, never expecting that this would happen.
“Y/n….I have to tell you. I’m…I’m pregnant too.” Lifting my head up I saw my twin sister standing in the doorway hearing the whole conversation, holding a pregnancy test in her hands. From that day on the only person I know would always be there was my sister Izzie.
Comments really appreciated ❤️

The sterile smell of the hospital surrounded you as you carried a ridiculously large present sack through the hall in pursuit of Denny's room. You could feel the excitement bubbling inside you. You were almost there. Just a few more steps.
When you finally made it to his door, he was sitting up in bed, a book held loosely between his hands. And the moment he noticed you standing there, his face lit up, a wide grin spreading across his features as he set the book down.
"I didn't know you were coming today." He smiled, his eyes never leaving you as you rounded the bed to meet him in a kiss.
"I wanted to surprise you."
"Surprise me?"
You nodded. "Yeah, I figured since you couldn't come home for Christmas, I'd bring Christmas to you."
"That what's in the sack?" He asked, pointing towards the large bag you'd left by the door. "Did you bring Christmas in that?"
"Well, presents, yeah."
"Show me." He grinned, sitting up straighter in the bed as he waited for you to get something out of the bag.
You managed to dig out one of the slightly larger boxes, handing it to Denny as you sat down on the bed beside him. "Merry Christmas."
You waited in silence as he carefully tore the paper off the box, lifting the lid to reveal a dark red sweater messily balled up inside.
"You got me a sweater?" He smiled, as he turned to look at you, removing the sweater from the box to hold it up in front of him. "I love it."
"I'm glad. And don't forget, you got a whole bag of presents over there." You reminded him, unable to stop smiling as you looked at him.
But then something suddenly shifted, his smile faltered a little as he turned back to look at the box in his lap. "Sorry I couldn't come home for Christmas."
"Hey, it doesn't matter, okay? Because as long as we're here together, we are home for Christmas."
"Yeah?"
You smiled, shifting closer to him and resting your head on his shoulder. "Yeah."

It feels surreal, sitting on the floor of the loft bathroom holding a positive pregnancy test. Jo has to blink a few times to make sure she’s reading the results correctly. But there’s no denying the two lines, one much darker than the other, telling Jo that her vomiting wasn’t the flu and her weight gain wasn’t all in her head. She was definitely pregnant.
“Hello? Jo?”
Jo pops her head out of the bathroom after having shoved the two positive tests into her box of tampons the second she heard the door unlock. She throws on her most convincing smile, walking over and settling herself in Alex’s arms. She stays longer than she normally would, letting the news of their impending parenthood sink in as she squeezes Alex tightly.
“Hey there, I missed you today,” Alex presses a kiss to Jo’s forehead as she buries her face in his chest. “You okay?”
Jo nods, pulling back from Alex and pressing a kiss to his lips, “Yeah, just tired. I didn’t sleep well.”
Alex nods and Jo is thankful he doesn’t prod any further, “I have to be at the airport in two hours. You sure you don’t want to come?”
As soon as Alex had discovered that his mom wasn’t caching his checks, he’d booked a plane ticket to Iowa. Jo knew that this was a trip Alex needed to make on his own. Now though, she was grateful for the extra time to process the news of her unexpected pregnancy.
“You need to focus on your mom. But I’m always a phone call away,” Jo grins as she grabs Alex’s packed duffle bag. “You’re lucky I went through this, you somehow managed to forget socks and underwear.”
Alex grabs her waist from behind, pressing a kiss to her shoulder, “What would I do without you?”
“You’d stink, that's for sure.”
+
Alex had texted Jo every day since leaving for Iowa a week ago. Usually just an update or a photo of something that reminded him of her. In the time since he’d left, Jo’s pregnancy had become something she couldn’t ignore anymore. Her cravings for cheese went from cute to obnoxious overnight and her stomach had popped out just enough that her scrub pants were beginning to feel tight.
She’s just walking through the door of the loft when her phone rings out, a smile appearing on her face as she checks the caller ID, “Hey stranger, how are you?”
Alex doesn’t respond right away and all Jo can hear is heavy breathing, “Hey beautiful.”
In an instant, she knows something is wrong just from Alex’s labored breathing and the way it sounds like it’s taking everything in him to speak.
“Alex? What’s wrong?”
“Nothing. I just got into a little fender bender.”
Jo’s heart sinks to her stomach, knowing Alex was downplaying things to keep her calm. She can hear sirens in the background of his call as he lets out a loud cough. She picks her purse up just as quickly as she’d dropped it before locking the door and running out of the loft.
“I’m leaving right now, I’m going to get on the first flight to Iowa, and I’ll be there as soon as I can,” Jo doesn’t realize she’s crying until her voice cracks. Then, she pauses, leaning against her car and willing herself not to vomit. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine. Maybe a couple broken ribs, definitely a concussion,” Alex coughs again as the sirens in the background grow louder. “I’ll see you soon?”
“Please don’t- just wait for me, okay?”
“I love you Jo,” his words sound so finite that Jo can’t help the cry that she lets out as she cradles the curve of her stomach. “I love you so much.”
“I love you too Alex,” Jo wipes her damp cheeks, taking a deep breath as she climbs into her car. “I’ll be there soon.”
+
She’s not sure how she got there so quickly, but it feels like the blink of an eye as Jo walks through the doors of Des Moines Medical Center. She’d spent the majority of her flight throwing up or crying, much to the displeasure of her seatmate. Now though, all she can think about is getting to Alex.
“Hi, I’m looking for Alex Karev, he’s a patient.”
“Name and relationship, please.”
“Josephine Wilson, he’s my fiancé.”
The nurse looks up from the desk with an unamused expression, “Family only, I can’t let you in to see him.”
“But-“
“No exceptions.”
Jo is about to scream at the receptionist or start crying uncontrollably or something in between when a voice sounds out, “Jo?”
Standing behind her is a tall and lanky woman, grey hair styled impeccably and a knit scarf around her neck. She’s about to ask how she knows her when they meet eyes. Jo instantly recognizes the warm expression as one she sees on Alex, “Helen. Hi.”
Despite never having met before, Helen moves forward and wraps Jo in a tight hug, the action calming her nerves ever so slightly. When she pulls back, Helen looks her over with a smile, “You’re absolutely glowing. The photos Alex showed me don’t do you justice.”
Jo tries not to read too far into Helen’s words as she thanks her, fiddling with her engagement ring to distract herself.
“Is he okay? I mean, what happened? Alex is so careful, I just….” Jo takes a deep breath before meeting Helen’s gaze again. “I’m sorry for rambling. I've just been a nervous wreck the whole trip here.”
“He’s okay, a truck ran a red light and side-swiped him. They said he spun out and hit a light pole, but he’s fine,” Helen grabs Jo’s hand and squeezes it. “I’ll let him explain all that medical terminology to you, I was never good at remembering that. Let me walk you up, the nurses seem to like me.”
Helen leads Jo past the reception desk and into the elevators. She closes her eyes and leans against the back wall in an attempt to slow her mind down. There’s a brief silence before Helen speaks up, “How far along are you?”
For a moment, Jo freezes, wondering if she should lie to her future mother-in-law, but she knows it’s a futile thought. She thought that she’d done a good job hiding the slight curve of her belly with her oversized sweater but Helen has three children of her own, it probably wasn’t hard to spot the signs in her.
“I’m not sure, I found out right before Alex left and I didn’t want to go to an appointment without him,” Jo swallows back the lump in her throat, trying her best not to cry again. “Maybe ten weeks if I had to guess.”
“He’s going to be fine dear,” Helen’s soft voice is comforting, something Jo hasn’t realized she needed. “And I’m sure he’s going to be thrilled.”
Jo nods, watching the numbers silently climb as she twists her engagement ring once again. She and Alex were a month and a half out from their wedding, they should be planning and celebrating, but instead, Jo is stuck wondering if he’ll be okay enough for their big day.
“He’s in room 412, down there on the left,” Jo is snapped out of her thoughts by Helen guiding her out of the elevator and pointing down the hallway in front of them. “I’ll let you go, sweetie. You can come back and find me when you’re done.”
Her anxiety mounts to a new high as Jo walks down the hallway, reading the room numbers slowly to make sure she doesn’t miss her destination. Finally, she comes to a stop outside of room 412, only hesitating for a moment before stepping inside.
Alex is sitting up in his hospital bed, stitches across his forehead and a frown as he reads the magazine in front of him. Jo is so relieved to see him that she doesn’t think twice about rushing forward and bringing him into a hug. Alex is confused for a moment but quickly reciprocates the hug, pulling her closer to him.
“You had me worried sick, I thought you were dying or something,” Jo doesn’t make an attempt to stifle her tears as she holds Alex close. “Never do that again, that was awful!”
When Alex doesn’t respond right away, Jo thinks she might have shocked him with her entrance. However, when she pulls away, he has tears welling in his eyes. She cups his face, wiping at his wet cheeks, “Alex? What’s wrong?”
“You’re pregnant.”
“What? How...?”
Alex slides his hand to cover Jo’s baby bump and she has to stop the gasp she so desperately wants to let out. Having him feel the small swell that had grown in made everything feel real.
“We’re having a baby?”
Jo can only nod, overwhelmed by the fact that Alex was okay, that they were going to get married, that they were having a baby together. She cups his cheek, meeting his eyes with a serious expression.
“You’re not allowed to drive anywhere until the baby is born,” Jo takes on a stern tone but Alex still chuckles at the request. “I’m serious Alex! What happens if you die? It won’t just be me that’s alone, we have someone else to worry about now.”
“Nothing bad is going to happen to me, I promise,” Alex presses a kiss to Jo’s lips before grinning at her. “Looks like we might need to move the wedding up though. How far along are you?”
“Maybe ten weeks, I haven’t gone in yet,” Alex laughs at the statement and Jo furrows her eyebrows. “What’s so funny?”
“Jo there’s no way you’re only ten weeks. You have a bump already,” Jo leans back from Alex, hand coming to protectively cradle her stomach. “It’s not a bad thing, I’m just saying. Either you’re further along than you thought or there’s more than one baby in there.”
“Don’t you dare even say that Alex.”

When you breathe, I wanna be the air for you: Chapter 3
Tumblr media
Summary: Suggestions are made to Alex by Meredith and Derek and sleepy cuddles ensue.
A/N: I know not many people care about this fic since I haven't updated it since April of last year. But, it's one I'm enjoying writing when the inspiration sparks, so just skip it if Grey's Anatomy isn't your thing. The fic is also posted on Ao3 here.
Rating: T
Word Count: 1,471
The room was dead silent.  The only sounds that could be heard were the beeping of the monitors and Alex’s wheezy breaths.
“Alex?  Did we overwhelm you with this?  You don’t have to answer yet if you’re not comfortable with it.”
That was Meredith, Alex noted as he finally zoned back into the conversation, his brain having short-circuited briefly at the question from Derek and Meredith.
“No.  You didn’t overwhelm me.  I just wasn’t expecting this question.  I like both of you.  I feel more comfortable and safe around the two of you than I ever have around anyone.  It just kind of scares me,” Alex admitted as he stared down at his hands.
“It scares you that you’re letting your guard down?” Derek asked gently as he reached out for Alex’s left hand, his heart breaking at how shaky the younger man’s hands were.
“Yeah.  I’m usually the one that has to be the responsible one, I’m not used to letting other people take control,” Alex explained as Derek squeezed his hand, Meredith moving to wrap her arm around him in a hug.
“I completely understand.  Before Derek, I didn’t want to ever let my guard down, but he made me feel safe.  Safer than I had ever felt in my entire life.  It’s scary at first, but the more you open up, the better you will feel.  And we will never let anything bad happen to you again.  We promise,” Meredith said softly as she pressed a kiss to Alex’s temple, hoping he would catch the sincerity in her voice.
"Trust me, I believe you. Both of you. But it's going to take time for me to fully open up. Can we start slow? Maybe have dinner tonight, just the three of us?" Alex asked nervously, his eyes flickering between Derek and Meredith before he squeezed Derek's hand back.
"Of course, we can! We can take it as slow as you need to in order to feel safe," Meredith smiled, her voice encouraging as she reached out to smooth Alex's hair back from his forehead.
"We definitely can do that. How about when we're done here, I can take you back to Meredith's place and we take a nap before Meredith gets off work? She's off five hours before Izzy and George, so we'll have plenty of time, just the three of us," Derek offered, hoping Alex wasn't feeling overwhelmed by their suggestions.
"A nap? Yeah, that actually sounds pretty good," Alex agreed after a moment of thought, a blush appearing on his cheeks when he felt Derek ruffle his hair before dropping a kiss on his temple. Biting his bottom lip, Alex froze for a moment before he melted against the kiss, burrowing his face into Derek's neck with a happy sigh of contentment.
"I should probably be getting back upstairs before Bailey yells at me. I had Cristina covering for me," Meredith smiled with a laugh as she pressed a kiss of her own to Alex's forehead before squeezing his hand gently and heading to the door. "I'll see you two tonight. Get lots of rest and feel better."
"Can I close my eyes for a bit?" Alex whispered softly as he looked up at Derek, finally tuckered out from being able to breathe a little better.
"Of course, just rest," Derek nodded, hoping the day would pass quickly and they'd be out of there soon.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Four hours later and hyped up on albuterol, Alex let Derek lead him out to his car, letting the older man wrap him up in his coat before he was settled into the passenger's seat and driven back to Meredith's.
"I know you already took a shower today, but why don't you go take another warm one? I'll bring you some sweatpants and a sweatshirt. I keep some spares in Mer's room," Derek spoke, breaking the comfortable silence as he parked in the driveway.
"That actually sounds nice, I smell like antiseptic. You should probably also take one, even though you and Mer also took one today," Alex smirked, the teasing jest sliding naturally out of his mouth as he nudged Derek's arm with his own.
"It was a nice shower, I give a great back massage. I can give you one after your shower if you want," Derek offered, as he got out of the car, opening Alex's door before leading him inside.
"I'll go heat up the shower while you get your jacket and shoes off." Derek headed up the stairs after taking his own shoes off. First, he stopped at the bathroom to turn the shower on hot before he made a detour into Meredith's room, grabbing a fresh towel, his Bowdoin sweatshirt along with a pair of grey sweatpants, and a fuzzy pair of Meredith's socks.
Was he going overboard with how comfortable he wanted to make Alex? Probably. But did the younger man seem to enjoy the coddling? Yes. That thought alone had Derek making his way back to the bathroom, smiling as he ran into Alex in the hallway.
"Here's the clothes and a towel. I'll go make you some tea while you shower," Derek smiled as he pressed the items into Alex's hands before heading back down the stairs, leaving Alex alone with his thoughts once more.
This was the first time in a while Alex had fully let himself go after what he truly desired. He had heard of polyamory before but in the one man and two women sense of the word. For some reason, he had never thought it could be the other way around, with two men and one woman. Derek seemed to have lots of experience with the subject, and he definitely wanted to hear more about his past relationship with Sloan and his ex. If the other was comfortable discussing it of course.
Shaking off his thoughts, Alex quickly undressed before stepping into the shower, letting out a small moan as the hot water ran over his sore muscles, shoulders still tight from his shallow breathing earlier. Washing quickly, Alex kept his shower to a quick once-over of his body with what he suspected was Derek's body wash, before he rinsed off and turned the hot water off.
After drying himself off, Alex slid the socks and sweatpants on before he picked up the sweatshirt and brought it up to his face, inhaling the comforting scent of detergent and Derek's leftover cologne before he sighed heavily and tugged the hoodie on before making his way down to the kitchen.
"I hope you like chamomile. I kind of raided Izzy's tea stash," Derek admitted as he handed Alex a steaming mug before looping his arm around the younger man's waist as he led him to the couch. The couch that now had two fluffy blankets on it, and a pillow, ready and waiting to be laid down upon.
"I grabbed the blankets you used yesterday along with the pillow. I figured you'd feel more at ease," Derek offered as he eased Alex to the couch. "I'm gonna grab a quick shower too, then I'll be back down. Pick something to watch. I'm fine with whatever," he smiled, handing Alex the tv and VHS/DVD remote, giving him full control of what to watch.
Once Derek had left once more, Alex wrapped one of the blankets around his shoulders and turned to an Indiana Jones movie marathon, only thirty minutes into Raiders of the Lost Ark as he settled in for the afternoon. Ten more minutes of the film passed before Derek came back downstairs and settled into the corner seat of the couch.
Silently, Derek stretched his left arm out over the back of the couch, and Alex's shoulders, as an indication for the other male to come cuddle.
Alex's first instinct was to freeze up at the contact before he let the tension fall from his shoulders and he leaned into Derek's side, letting his cheek settle against the older man's chest, the sound of his heartbeat strong against Alex's ear as a yawn finally slipped past his lips.
He didn't mean to fall asleep for the afternoon, but he'd be lying if he said it wasn't the best sleep of his life to date. He didn't stir awake until an hour and a half later, to Derek's fingers gently caressing his hair to wake him up.
"C'mon, we don't want you sleeping the day away. Mer's almost home," Derek whispered softly against Alex's temple, the other man letting out a small whine of disapproval, though he slowly opened his eyes in compliance, right as Meredith entered the house.
"Hey sleepyheads," she smiled, kicking her shoes off as she hung up her coat, smiling proudly at how soft and comfortable the other two looked, excited to join them.
I hope your feeling well. I would like to request an Amelia shepherd x reader where the reader is in recovery of self harm and one day Amelia comes home and finds her harming herself. First angst and then fluff if you are comfortable <3
Tumblr media
⚠️Trigger Warning⚠️ This one-shot includes the topic of self-harm, blood and the brief mention of suicide. These plots are presented. If this triggers you too easily or you just can´t handle the subject, I urge you NOT to read this work. I am NOT embellishing this topic under any circumstance. Read at your own risk.
ᕚ---ᕘ
In a dimly lit room, you sat at a shabby old desk belonging to your predecessor. The room seemed cramped and suffocating, as if the bare walls were getting closer and closer the longer you stayed there in your chair. You stared at the screen of an overloaded old computer, your eyes wide open and your forehead furrowed thoughtfull, the table littered with all the papers from a new case, scattered in a chaotic arrangement while the coffee in the cup next to it has long since become cold, ignored and forgotten.
Your hands clinging to the mouse, sweaty and shaking, the cursor on the screen frantically darting over various tabs and icons as you desperately tried to get anything done amid the pressure, stress and sleepless nights of the last few weeks. Your breathing was heavy and shallow, but your chest was still falling quickly and in an irregular rhythm. The air around you thick and the pressure within it palpable, as if invisible hands were constricting your throat.
"Hey, y/n. Are you okay?" A bright, feminine voice asked, her fitting figure standing in front of your desk. Your eyelids flickered as you lifted your head, the thoughts in your head swirling wildly as you tried to keep control of them and yourself. But the only thing you wanted at that moment was to go back to the blade and relieve yourself, even though you had already been clean for three months and had promised yourself never to fall back into this addiction.
"Y-yeah, everything is fine," you lied in a broken and raspy voice, the desk lamp next to you flickering dimly as the room filled with a muffled, monotone sound that seemed to penetrate through your ears and lodge in your head. "Are you sure? You look pale and you are sweating. Do you have a fever?"
The pressure inside you grew with your colleague's questioning, heavy like an unbearable weight that rested on your shoulders and pulled you further and further to the ground. Every second that the blonde's eyes were on you seemed like an eternity, and the pressure inside, mixed with a deep panic, felt like a bubbling volcano, ready to erupt and consume everything around you. "You know what? I feel sick. I am going to go home and rest."
ᕚ---ᕘ
As soon as you got home, you quickly ran to the bathroom and looked for a brand new disposable razor, which you had disassembled in seconds. The world around you blurred into a diffuse mist of colors and shadows as you sat down on the bed and violently tore your jacket down. Your heartbeat was pounding in your ears and your gaze was blank, fixated on the cold silver between your fingers. Your hands shook as you placed the blade spasmodically against your thin skin, fighting the inner storm to hurt yourself and destroy the promise you gave Amelia.
There was an ominous silence around you, broken only by the dull thumping of your own pulse. Your body was heavy, bound by an invisible chain, your legs rooted to the ground. Your face marked by fear and desperation, but also relief as you pulled the blade through and a thin line of blood appeared on the cut. It helped you release the pressure you were holding inside, pouring out the stress of the days.
It was a moment of liberation that no one understood. Another cut brought you repeated relief and at the feeling of burning and escaping emotions, you closed your eyes as you tilted your head back and took a deep breath. In your trance, you didn't even hear how the front door closed and your girlfriend checked on you in every room. "Y/n? My love, where are you?" Amelia called but you did not hear her, the environment around you seemed unreal and vague.
Amelia had come home after your colleague called her and told her about the incident that had happened at work. She was worried that you really were not feeling well, leaving you go home alone in case something happened to you, so to be on the safe side she had called the emergency contact number listed in your file to make sure you were not alone and someone could look after you when you got home. "Elizabeth called me and said that you-" she stopped perplexed in her tracks, her jaw hanging low as she spotted you, bloody razor just inches away from your wrist.
Close to it, there were cuts, angry red blood dripping down onto your thigh. "Hey, what are you doing there? Put that down, please" she demanded softly, mostly out of fright and shock. You looked down at the ground, refusing to meet her gaze as she dropped her bag on the floor and immediately made her way to the bathroom to grab some bandages. Amelia returned with a small, wet rag, which she gently placed over your wrist and pressed firmly onto it. There was not much bleeding, she did not have to worry about serious injuries, however tears threatened to fall. The brunette was scared- terrified for you.
"Why?" she asked sniffling, not showing the slightest bit of anger in her voice. You looked up nervously, your shiny and relieved eyes meeting her sad hazel brown ones. She ran her fingers delicately through your strands of hair before her hand came to rest on your cheek, her thumb lightly stroking your cheekbone. "You were clean. Why did you do that, darling?"
„I just needed to escape the harsh and bleak reality. Life recently got so rough and I felt like I may burst,“ you began to speak and she pulled you into her chest by the back of your head. Amelia kissed your hair, ran her hand through it and gently rocked you from left to right. Her chin rested on your skull, her eyes closed to calm her racing heart. She was not mad at you, never could be. She herself knew what it was like to fight an addiction; it took her several attempts to be sober for a good three years. "I am sorry, Am."
"It is okay. Please only answer one question," you nodded your head, still hidden in her chest and held by her. "If you could kill yourself right now, would you?" You quickly jumped and tore yourself away from her, your eyes wide at the shocking question. Placing your hands on her thighs, you gently rubbed her knees and looked deep into her eyes. "No, because suicide means that you have given up on yourself. And I am not going to do that. I just had to let the pressure go because I did not see any other option."
Cardiac Arrest
Denny Duquette x Female Reader
Summary: Your favorite patient Denny gets special treatment.
Warnings: no sadness, just smut. denny being denny, flirting, handjob, p in v, breeding, riding denny in his hospital bed
Note: I am going through an extremely obsessive denny phase right now. I'm sad and horny - send help.
Tumblr media
"There's my favorite doctor." Denny grins as you enter his room. You smirk at him before routinely shutting the blinds, leaving the view of only the small rectangular window on the door for other's to see inside.
"I'd say you're my favorite patient, but that would be very unprofessional." You scan over his chart as his eyes burn into you, making your cheeks blush.
"Well, we can't have that.. Can't risk you getting fired and never seeing my pretty face again." He grins from ear to ear as you roll your eyes playfully, setting the clipboard down and sauntering over to his bedside. His hand reaches out lazily and you take it in yours without hesitation.
"Do you play scrabble with your other patients?" He asks.
"No... can't say I have."
"Held hands romantically with any other patients?"
You smile, dropping your gaze down to your fingers intertwined with his. "Who says this is romantic?"
"Me." Denny chuckles, bringing your hand to his chest and holding it there with his. Your own heart flutters at the small gesture as you feel his weak heart beating beneath his chest. You wish so badly that you could just snap your fingers and make him okay.
"Kissed any other patients?"
Your brows scrunch at him. "I've never kissed you, Denny." Your eyes drop to his mouth for a slight second before trailing back up to his chocolate eyes.
"Do you want to?" His voice turns low and raspy during this question, making your cheeks burn and your heart pound.
"Denny, I - I can't. I don't kiss my patients." You whisper, glancing at the door behind you.
Seriousness replaces the playfulness in his features as he speaks even lower. "Not even your favorite ones?"
His thumb rubs your hand gently as he looks up at you. You let your gaze drop to his mouth again, admiring his full pink lips and imagining what they would feel like against yours.
"Y/n..." He whispers softly.
Tumblr media
Before he can finish, you bring your hand up to rest against his stubble covered cheek and lean down to press your lips to his.
You kiss him slowly, bringing his puffy bottom lip between yours and sucking it gently, savoring the taste of him. His hands reach up, one cupping your cheek while the other gently pushes on the back of your lower neck, urging your closer and deepening the kiss. Both of your mouths part before your tongues explore each other's mouths and you can't help when a soft moan escapes your throat.
After what feels like an eternity of kissing, you finally rest your forehead against his, closing your eyes.
"You're going to get through this. You have to. For me. For us.. Promise me, Denny."
"I promise." He whispers.
You kiss him again, harder this time, letting your hand trail down from his neck to his stomach. You grip his gown, frustrated that it's in your way.
The door creaks open quickly, making you jerk away from Denny and lock eyes with Dr. Burke.
Burke clears his throat, standing by the door with a face full of disappointment. "Y/n, I'm gonna do you a huge favor and pretend I didn't just see you kissing our patient."
"Easyyy, doc." Denny intervenes. "Dr. y/l/n here was just saving my life. It's called mouth to mouth." He winks at you, his signature grin spreading across his handsome face as you bite back your smile.
"Y/n, your shift was over 40 minutes ago. Why don't you call it a day?" Burke says, ignoring Denny.
"I'm, um. I'm gonna stay here tonight, make sure he's okay." It's not a lie.. Denny had surgery the day before, and you've been checking on him more frequently the past 24 hours.
"That's what we have night staff for. Go. Home." Burke demands and Denny nods his head at you, silently telling you it's okay.
"Fine." You look down at Denny, telling him goodbye with your eyes since you're unable to say goodbye with your lips.
You stand next to Burke on your way out. "If anything happens, I wanted to be notified immediately." You warn.
Midnight:
You lay wide awake in your bed, staring at the ceiling and all you can think about is Denny. Your heart hurts knowing he's there alone. No family, no friends.
What if he's bored?
What if he misses you?
What if.. what if something bad happens and you're not there?
"Fuck this." You jump out of bed, changing back into some clean scrubs and throwing your hair up in a ponytail.
You sneak through the hallway, careful not to wake your roommates as you leave.
When you finally arrive at the hospital, you choose the side entrance, scanning your badge and confidently walking in. You avoid eye contact as you walk past the nurses station and into Denny's room.
By some miracle, you made it without anyone questioning you, so you quietly shut the door behind you as you enter the room.
Denny sleeps soundly as you make your way over to his bedside. The only lights in the room are the ones coming from his machines since the blinds are still closed from earlier.
You pull a chair up next to him, carefully letting the bed side railing down to allow you to lean in closer next to him. You rest your head on his stomach, holding him in your arms.
Surprisingly he doesn't move, so you lay there enjoying the moment, feeling his chest rise slowly as he breathes until something twitches beneath his blanket directly in front of your face.
His body feels hot, so you lift your head off of him, leaning back up and pulling his blanket from his waist.
Your mouth drops open slightly at the outline of his fully erect cock. You can tell its long and thick and you can't tear your eyes away, imagining what it looks like beneath his gown.
"Like what you see?" Denny says sleepily, making you snap your eyes towards his and blush that you just got caught staring.
"Uh, I - I didn't see anything."
He chuckles. "But you want to."
His knees suddenly lift slightly until his feet are resting flat against the bed, blocking the view from the door window to his mid section.
"Denny.." You warn hesitantly, knowing this is wrong.
"If you don't wanna see it, now is the time to look away." He gives you one warning before moving his gown over his cock, revealing himself completely. You can't take your eyes off it, even if you wanted to.
Your mouth drops slightly open as you watch his hand wrap around it and stroke slowly up and down. "Y/n.." He moans your name softly as he watches you watch him.
"Denny, we can't.. we can't do this here."
"Then leave, baby. Cause I need to cum. Been stuck in this damn hospital for too long."
He continues stroking himself, tightening his jaw as his head leans back into his pillow.
Your cunt aches between your legs at the sight of him pleasuring himself and you bite down on your bottom lip hard as you give in, reaching for his dick and replacing his hand with yours. You squeeze him lightly before sliding your hand up and down his thick length.
"Denny.." You whisper as you watch the precum leak from his tip. "I need you.."
"Baby, trust me.. If I were anywhere but this damn bed, I would bend you over and give you the fuckin' of a lifetime."
A shadow skims across the room as you notice someone walk by the door. You take the extra sheet at the end of his bed, and shove it in the crack of the door, letting it hang over the window.
"Is that even allowed?" Denny asks.
"No... but neither is this..." You say as you slip your pants and underwear down your leg.
"Y/n.. baby. I don't want you gettin' in trouble cause of me."
"I don't even care anymore, Denny. I need you."
You climb over him, settling your knees on each side of him until your exposed center is hovering directly above his dick.
"Tryna send me into cardiac arrest?" He smirks up at you, gliding his hands up the sides of our legs and to your hips.
"Good thing there's a doctor here." You lean down, kissing him as you bring the blanket with you, trying to cover as much of yourself as possible - not that it matters, because if anyone walked in right now, you'd be fucked. And not in the way you're trying to be.
You kiss each other desperately as soft moans fill the dark room. He reaches for his cock, lining himself up to your entrance and you immediately slide down completely on him, taking every inch while still kissing him hard. He groans into your mouth as his hands simultaneously squeeze your ass and you ride him slow and gently, not wanting to put too much pressure on him.
"Fuck. You can go faster, baby. My heart might be weak but my dick isn't." He grins as you go slightly faster and grind into him just right, making his tip press into your g-spot over and over.
You study his face as you ride him, noticing the way his eyelids get heavy when he's turned on and how his pretty lips part slightly.
Tumblr media
"You feel so damn good, y/n." He breathes out. "You have no idea how many times I've imagined this."
"Probably just as many as I have" You whisper, your breathing unsteady like his.
He brings his hand around again, finding your clit and rubbing it like a pro, making you cry out until his lips crash against yours to suppress your sounds.
His finger, cock, and raspy voice work in unison to send you over the edge and you cum embarrassingly hard, feeling warm liquid rush out of you.
The sounds of the monitors connected to him beep faster as his breathing grows more rapid.
"Fuck, baby. I'm gonna cum." He whines out, giving you a chance to get off of him, but you refuse, keeping yourself in place so his load shoots deep inside of you.
He tenses beneath you, holding your hips down and pressing you completely against him as he comes undone, pushing his head further back into pillow.
A soft moan escapes his lips each time his dick twitches inside of you and it makes your pussy flutter, squeezing your muscles around him tightly.
He attempts to control his breathing as the monitor beeps at full speed. "I fuckin' love you."
You can't help the smile that spreads across your face as you kiss him again. "I love you, Denny. Now calm down, before you overdo it."
"Yes ma'am."
You carefully climb off of him and slip your pants back on while noticing the wet spot on the sheets below him.
"Sorry.." You blush as he notices the spot too. "Let me grab you some new sheets and I'll get them changed for you."
He grabs your wrist, pulling you back in the bed. "Don't.. you dare."
𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜: Mark Sloan x Pregnant!reader ♡
𝘼/𝙣: This was very specific ahah, hope you'll like it anon!
Tumblr media
You rushed into the locker room, hoping you weren't late, luckily they were all still there.
"Where were you?" you have been warmly welcomed by your group.
"I was- I've just- well now I'm here" you took off your shirt starting to get ready, without adding details about your horrible morning.
"Oh the girl has a secret lover" Cristina said. You ignored her. "Maybe Jackson knows something more" she continued.
"What the hell are you saying?" he looked at her confused as he finished getting dressed.
"Wait, Jackson?!" April added in a worried tone.
"Kepner calm down" Lexie said to her.
"Okay stop, there isn't any secret lover anywhere" you said shutting up everyone.
A few minutes later everyone had already left, except Meredith, she was waiting for you. You were sitting on one of the benches staring into space.
"Y/n, are you okay?" the blonde sat next to you putting a hand on your shoulder.
"Umh, yeah..." you stood up to get ready to join the others, but just before you went to the door you stopped feeling the urge to throw up.
"Oh hey" Meredith got up quickly to help you. "Oh my God, are you pregnant?"
"What?" you recovered while she accompanied you to the bathroom to rinse your face.
"So?" Meredith's curious voice interrupted your stillness. You looked at her as if to ask where she was getting at, and a smile appeared on her face. "You're pregnant, aren't you?" she asked again.
Actually you didn't know what to answer her, it could be possible.
"I... don't know..." you said confused.
"Okay, stay here, I'm going to get a test" she rushed out to find one, the hospital definitely had one.
Meanwhile you sat down for a moment. How would Mark react? I mean, you'd been dating for a few months now and no one knew about it, but you had no idea what he would think about the idea of having a baby.
"Okay, here's!" Meredith came back suddenly making you scare. You took the test without thinking twice, anxiety was starting to rise. One day you would have thought about having baby and starting a family, but one day... now it would have been challenging, the residency was already giving you enough stress. But that day had come sooner than you thought, what the test said was clear.
You came out of the bathroom where Meredith was waiting for you.
"Positive?" you answered her by nodding and she jumped up to come towards you.
"Are we happy?" she asked you tried to hold back her excitement.
"I-" anxiety began to take over. "I'm just starting out, how do I handle all this? It's a miracle I can remember my keys when I go out, I don't have the responsibility like a good mother would have!" you were about to freak out.
"Ok, you're panicking, calm down" Meredith made you sit back on the bench. "You will have time for your baby, when you see him he'll become the only thing that matters to you, and well then you will become more responsible too… I hope" you let out a small laugh.
"You're right" you managed to come to your senses, while a huge smile was created on your face. "I'm gonna have a baby!" you exclaimed realizing the situation.
"Yeah!" Meredith literally choked you trying to hug you.
"Wait, so you really have a secret lover?" she asked more curious. You weren't ready to tell her, but you couldn't deny it, because the baby was there and he certainly couldn't have created on his own. "Oh my God is really Jackson?!"
"What? No!" she wouldn't even leave you alone for a second until you told her who the father was. For now you used the excuse of going back to work to get out of the way, but you should have thought of something else in the future. Even if she sooner or later she would find out.
During the day you managed to find a moment for yourself, alone to rest in one of the call rooms, when you then heard the sound of the door opening.
"We had the same idea" you got out of bed having recognized the voice.
"Hey" you approached Mark to kiss him. He smiled at you as he tucked a strand of hair behind your ear.
"You look happy" he told you.
"I am" you kept looking at him smiling. You were so torn between telling him or waiting, but your pager preceded all your thoughts.
"Fuck, I'm sorry I have to..."
"I know" he gave you one last little kiss to greet you, you looked at him one last time before leaving. Yes, you would have waited.
Meanwhile, as these weeks went by, the thing that annoyed you and made difficult to go on the most wasn't the early pregnancy symptoms, but Meredith. God, you didn't think she could get this annoying. She wanted to know at all costs who the father of the baby was, sometimes you just wanted to disappear from the world for this. Yeah well, you would have done the same thing in her side, but it was so frustrating.
"Please Y/n, I won't say to anyone, you can trust me!" at one point you stopped to think about it. She was important to you, your lives depended on each other, telling her wouldn't hurt anyone.
"Okay... I have someone here in this hospital..." you sighed before revealing his name. "It's Mark"
"Mark Sloan?!" she repeated raising her eyebrows almost in shock.
"Yes, Mark and I are having a baby!" you repeated too, still almost incredulous.
"Are we going to have a baby?" you whipped around behind you at hearing her voice as he dropped the file he was holding. This wasn't exactly the moment you wanted him to know, so you looked at him nodding.
"Oh my God Y/n!" he approached you embracing you tightly, even managing to convey to you all the happiness he felt at that moment, then he began to kiss you intensely, not caring about the people who were around there. You wouldn't expected this reaction but you were so happy.
"I love you Y/n" at that moment all those hormones could have made you cry.
"I love you too Mark" you went back to kissing him. Meredith was smiling at you from behind, while everyone was completely paralyzed by the news.
"Y/n's having a baby?"
"Sloan's having a baby??"
"Wait, Mark and Y/n are together?!" Cristina, Lexie, Jackson and April were there wondering and unable to grasp the whole situation.
"Why is no one working in this fucking hospital?" you said confused and annoyed that they found out it too like this.
"Don't care about it, we'll be the best family in the world" he put his hand on your cheek to caress you as your foreheads rested against each other.
