Creator Spotlight: @66sharkteeth

66 is a comic artist and the creator of City of Blank, a WEBTOON original series. They worked in the game industry at companies such as 2K Games before entering the field of comics. They began their career in comics at Tapas, where they worked as an editor and lead typesetter, before being signed to create their own original series on WEBTOON.

Have you ever had an art block? If so, how did you overcome it?

The short answer is yeah, I’ve definitely had one. Overall, I feel like doing a lot of style studies during that time and trying to use new brushes helps a lot. In addition, because I’m a comic artist, I feel like writer’s block is in the same field, and with that, I’m really fortunate that I have an editor that I can work with, who helps me a lot there. Whenever I am stuck at a plot point in my comic, I can always go to my editor, who helps me hammer things out.

What medium have you always been intrigued by but would never use yourself?

Animation. Of course, everyone loves animation. I went to school for game art and design and even did some animation courses, and I am just not cut out for it. I don’t enjoy the process, and I am not good at it. Animation is beautiful, and I admire people who can do it. I’d love for my work to be animated some day, I’m just not capable of being the one to do it haha.

Warm tones or cool tones?

It really depends on the scene! Especially in my comic, I really go with both of them, just depending on the moment in the comic. There was a major character death, and that scene was almost black and white. But normally, the comic is very vibrant, and people really like it, so when I switch it to a more cold tone, it makes the scene that much more impactful.

What is a recent creative project that you are proud of?

Honestly, my current comic, City of Blank, takes up 100% of my time. But recently, I did a plushie campaign where I worked with Makeship through Webtoon to design the plushies and do a little bit of marketing for them. So that’s fun and different from what I normally do!

When planning a comic or a story, what do you do first, character design or character outline?

Normally, I have a design, and I fall in love with the character design, and then I find a role for them. That’s how a lot of my characters have started. Also, that’s how I’ve been tackling new projects that I want to work on after City of Blank. I just came up with a character, and I’m trying to make a story around them.

What is a convention experience that has stuck with you?

Meeting readers and realizing how much my work means to some of them. Some of them have started their own comics, having been inspired by mine. Learning that I’m part of the reason they started their own comic journey, the same way I looked to other inspiring comic artists to start mine—it means the world that I’m in that position now.

Top tips on setting up an Artist Alley booth?

Let’s see…bright, sparkly colors! I think just trying to make sure that the booth is eye-catching. I ended up making a big shiny banner for New York Comic Con, and I know many people stopped by because it caught their eye and they’re curious about what it is. I know a lot of people are selling merchandise of popular media. Even just a banner of your brand to get them curious about who you are and maybe interested in seeing what you make and taking a business card so they can look you up later. It’s better than someone just buying a pin and forgetting you exist. Lastly, put out a tip jar. You never know just how generous your fans are feeling.

Who on Tumblr inspires you and why?

I’m mostly involved in the webtoon sphere! I am definitely inspired by my fellow Webtoon creators, @lark-wren, who created the series Woven. I love their work and seeing them interact with their readers on Tumblr. Same with fellow Webtoon creators, @miranda-mundt-art and @astrobleme-enterprises, who created Lovebot.

SO I just got my stay-flats in for mailing prints which means I'm one step closer to getting my online shop open <3

But what I WASN'T expecting to also show up inside the box of mailers was my pre-order copy of Covenant!

Apologies in advance because my photos aren't the greatest, but I wanna share some pics of it because I'm really impressed with how these books look and feel.

For starters, the actual cover designs. The front cover features stunning art and has a nice gloss cover, whereas the backside actually has a softer matte feel with gloss golden text which compliments the overall aesthetic of the book very nicely.

As for inside the book...

I was so relieved to see how well the formatting was done. Those who follow me here know I spend a lot of time bitching about webtoons-related stuff and one of my biggest gripes is how the webtoon format overall is very unfriendly to long-term publishing, as many creators don't anticipate eventually formatting for print (and Webtoons certainly hasn't helped as for years they've perpetuated the notion that print books are "dead", at least until it came to them making money 🍵) It's not an easy task to convert a vertical webtoon into a page format comic, but I'm happy to say that Lysandra's team here knocked it out of the park. The panel and text flow is smooth and easy to follow, they always take full advantage of the page space given to them, and the overall structure of every page feels very well thought out to work for the story it's trying to tell (as this is an action comic with fight scenes which can be tricky enough to pull off in page format, let alone converting from vertical format!) They've also gone out of their way to properly format the episode divides, so episodes (or as they're called in the story's stylization, "books") flow seamlessly with very little breakage, unlike what you would find in some webtoon-to-print books that often find the flow interrupted by episode title breaks every few pages. According to the credits page in the front of the book, we owe a lot of the formatting to layout designer Miranda Mundt and book designer Carey Soucy! Well done!

The print quality of the pages is also superb, printed on high-quality glossy paper which makes for stunning colors that have translated well from web to print. The darks are very dark which is necessary for a comic like Covenant which has a very earthy color palette; but when there ARE color pop moments of pink, red, and blue, they really shine. Of course, there is a downside to this, which is that the glossy paper WILL show your thumbprints in the darker areas (especially if you have particularly oily hands like I do, ech) but hey, it adds character and it's worth seeing the comic's art come to life on the glossy paper.

Sooo yeah! This is a very competent and well-made book from an awesome creator and if I have ANYTHING to snipe about just for the sake of it, it's that it's no wonder Webtoons tried to keep the creator from promoting their book launch, because it frankly outdoes a lot of WT's own publishing efforts LOL Congrats on your book launch Lysandra, I'm looking forward to getting my hands on Volume 2! <3

Ophelia and Amos (@bubblelovewaltz)

Ophelia is a former nightclub singer turned receptionist at Lover's Hotel. She's quiet, not shy, just more she prefers to be quiet, enjoys the little things in life, and prefers to be seen as just 'normal' rather than anything big. Amos is a self-described phantom who 'haunts' Lover's Hotel, a hotel, for 20 years, but in actuality, he is a normal human who's become engrossed with a phantom persona since he's been in the hotel. Amos is awkward and eccentric. He tends to have rather overtop interaction towards everything. Their relationship is founded on trust and love as most relationships. They both understand how to deal with a form of isolation that has affected their lives and worldview. Amos will loudly profess his love to Ophelia to the rooftops while Ophelia laughs and will pat him on the back. To be best describe they are simply just the lovers.

They're the lovers, no matter what even if they don't one another they'll always love each other and want keep one another safe. The phantom who wants to love and the receptionist who wants to love again.

Delilah and Oriel (@sawvidae)

In short their relationship is an "annoyance to lovers" story with the "there was only one bed" trope except it's "there was only one body". Oriel starts crushing on Delilah, gets turned down, but decides she wants to be friends regardless and follows her around until they both end up in a near-fatal incident that they only narrowly escape by Ori activating a last resort spell that gets them both stuck sharing a big furry deer-beast body. Delilah's pissed, but Ori apologizes and takes a massive step back until she starts to warm up to her, and gets desperate enough to agree to totally platonic sex in their little shared headspace. After nearly a year of this, Delilah's literal serial killer mother attacks them, and when they get out of it mostly alright, Ori is frantic and accidentally confesses her feelings that end up being mutual (they also figure out how to temporarily split back into individual people again, which is convenient). Another year in, during which their feelings deepen and Delilah is introduced to Ori's loving family, and her mother attacks them again, this time without the intention of leaving them alive. They have no real hope of escaping, but Delilah fights back anyways, and manages to kill her mother. They both survive, and after they're recovered, they find someone to get them separated so they can live as two separate people again, and eventually get married, and get their happily ever after. 

In my biased opinion they are a very cute couple, butch x femme high energy dog person x quiet cat person. Delilah was raised by an incredibly abusive mother and came out of it with a ton of trauma, while Ori has a large close-knit loving family who take Delilah in almost immediately after meeting her. Ori knows she can't "fix" Delilah's PTSD, but she's so patient and understanding in helping her manage it, and in return Delilah helps Ori with symptoms of her ADHD.

i don't really watch a lot of tv but i really love reading webcomics. i've been especially enjoying the greenhouse on webtoon (among many others) i've also been considering rereading power ballad which is very good. sunset phoenix by @neveromininart is another more recent fav. i also enjoyed asterion by them.

A more propper introduction

If you see my Tumblr hello again, I have some news besides the obvious:

The Emergency Comms have been retired kinda as I got the money I lost in a scam back (not the money that was lost back in June but I reearned it, thank you Ebay). Simply to say though, due to the game Mice Tea, I have found a character who is basically me to the core being the Snake love interest named Sylvia, and with that I realized, similar to the implications of the epilogue of her route, I would likely stay as a Snakegirl if I was in her situation. Because of this I started to have vivid dreams as a sort of anthro snake, a lamia, and after a few days of that, I realized moving my legs caused a similar feeling when you feel a sound in your teeth and after speaking with a few friends i have come to the end that I may be a Lamia Otherkin.

I have done my best with that information but the main aspect is sorta dysphoria involving my legs in the way they exist, before I thought some aspects that line up with the idea were just unachievable transition goals ideas of being a Tiefling but the factors that can't line up with Lamia, which really was one thing, was likely relieving pressure on my feet and in my legs from standing as I often shifted to the balls of my feet in order to feel different, thinking it was possibly an idea of wanting hooves but now I think it may be due to the idea of less pressure and friction put on my lowe half. And with the leg thing I found binding my legs in a blanket while sitting or laying down helps a lot. But I mean do know if synthetic body mods become a thing I am getting myself that Snake tail because omg my brain these past 3 days has been on fire with this.

for the anon asking for positive polyam rep, if they like webcomics there's one I like called Muted on webtoon! it's by Miranda Mundt. though I offer a major TW because the webcomic focuses on different aspects of abuse, depression, survivors guilt, passive suicidal ideation, and gets pretty bloody at some points. it's a good webtoon, but heed the warnings.

Muted was in this tournament!!!! the art looks rlly cute and the fans were v enthusiastic its actually on my list now buuuut im very slow w consuming any content so i havent started it yet
