Zweite Station: Niagara Falls & Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada & New York, USA

Die Orte:

Direkt an der Grenze zu den USA, getrennt durch den Niagara River, liegt Niagara Falls, wo die Menschen augenscheinlich fast ausschließlich am Tourismus verdienen. Neben den atemberaubenden Wasserfällen, die tatsächlich so beeindruckend sind, wie es oft beworben wird, stehen reihenweise große Casinos und Spielhallen, wodurch ein witziger Kontrast entsteht. Die kleineren American Fälle und die großen Horseshoe Fälle bieten einen fantastischen Anblick, bei dem ich stundenlang verweilte. Die zugegeben nicht gerade günstige Bootstour mit der “Maid of the Mist” oder wie sie auf der kanadischen Seite heißt, “Hornblower”, in das Zentrum der Fälle war ein besonders prägnantes Erlebnis, da man hierbei die Kraft der Wassermassen im Ansatz erahnen kann. Wenn dann bei Nacht dieselben in bunten Farben beleuchtet werden, bekommt das Ganze einen noch epischeren Touch, als es sowieso schon hat (Bitte entschuldigt die unsachliche Ausdrucksweise, ich bin kurz emotional geworden).

Mit einem über mehere Busse sich verteilenden Shuttle-Service gelangt man auch in das kleine Städtchen Niagara-on-the-Lake, bei dem 25 km von den Fällen entfernt der Fluss in den Lake Ontario mündet. Diese Kleinstadt gilt als einer der historischen und ältesten Orte Kanadas, da sich hier im Krieg gegen die Amerikaner 1812/13 wichtige Schlachten ereigneten und man heute auch noch Häuser von damals und 200 Jahre alte Fortanlagen besuchen kann. Zwar auch touristisch extrem ausgeschlachtet, rundete der Besuch dort aber den ruhigen, freundlichen Eindruck Kanadas ab, der sich bei mir in den vergangenen 8 Tagen entwickelt hatte.

Über die Rainbow-Bridge gelangt man über den Fluss auf die amerikanische Seite - nachdem man die Grenzekontrolle passiert hat. Das Stadtbild des gleichheißenden Ortes im Bundesstaat New York in den USA ist hier jedoch ein ganz anderes. Mit weniger Mühe und Liebe zum Detail sind hier wenige, veralterte Tourismusanlagen zu finden, die jedoch im Vergleich zum aufwendigen Aufzug auf anderer Seite arg heruntergekommen wirken. Bei der Suche nach der Busstation etwas außerhalb der Hauptstraße entlanglaufend kann man ziemlich verwahrloste Straßenzüge entdecken. Bezeichnend für diese Gegend war mein erster Kontakt zu Einheimischen - eine junge Frau fragte mich auf offener Straße, ob ich wüsste, wo sie Stoff herbekommt - nachgehakt, es ging ihr nicht um Marihuana (wohlgemerkt ca. um 17 Uhr). Daher war ich nicht undankbar, als ich nach erneuter Betrachtung der beleuchteten Fälle bei Dunkelheit von amerikanischer Seite aus mit dem Overnight-Bus Richtung New York aufbrach.

Erlebnisse:

Nachdem es mit dem Greyhound-Bus von Toronto aus nach Niagara Falls gegangen war, konnte ich in einem nahgelegenen Hostel mein Gepäck verstauen, wobei dort alle Mitarbeiter ausgesprochen freundlich und zuvorkommend waren - HI-Hostels Canada - nur zu empfehlen, Daraufhin verbrachte ich den restlichen Tag an den Fällen, wo ich die beschriebenen Eindrücke sammeln konnte. Zurück im Hostel traf ich Till aus Deutschland, der dort für 6 Monate nach seinem Abitur und einer fünfwöchigen Reise durch Kanada arbeitet und an einem internationalen Hostelaustausch teilnimmt. Nachdem ich mich mit ihm über die umliegenden Sehenswürdigkeiten ausgetauscht hatte, plante ich für den nächsten Tag nach Niagara-on-the-Lake zu fahren, wo ich vor allem die Ruine des Fort Missauga beeindruckend fand, da von hier aus mitunter der Widerstand der Briten und Kanadier gegen die Amerikaner ausging und einen nicht unerheblichen Teil zur heutigen Grenze der beiden Länder beitrug, da es den Amerikanern nicht gelang, ihr Gebiet noch weiter nach Norden auszudehen.

Abenteuerlich war der Übergang an der Grenze zu den USA, da ich vom mürrisch dreinblickenden Beamten Bruno fast nicht durchgelassen worden wäre. Weil ohne Job in Deutschland, nur 7000$ für 90 Tage und ohne direkte, vorgebuchte Reiseziele, ja nicht einmal einem Rückflug nach Hause, hegte er große Zweifel an meinen Aussagen und ließ mich einige Minuten zappeln, bis er mich mit Worten wie “normalerweise wär ich jetzt nicht reingelassen worden, und er macht eine Ausnahme etc. etc.” schließlich doch durchwinkte. Nachdem dies glücklicherweise geklappt hatte, begab ich mich auf die Suche nach der Bushaltestelle, von wo aus ich mit dem Overnight-Bus nach New York City fahren wollte. Nach über 1,5 Stunden Suche fand ich den Schalter für die Tickets - die man, was ein Zufall, diesmal ausnahmsweise nicht online hatte kaufen können -, der in der Lobby eines Hotels ohne größere Kennzeichnung verortet war. Nach einem Umstieg in Buffalo nach wenigen Minuten fuhr der Bus mit wenigen Stopps durch bis New York City, wo er mit 45-minütiger Verspätung gegen 07.30 Uhr, Dienstagmorgen, ankam.

Die Menschen:

Auf kanadischer Seite mit ähnlichem Eindruck von den Einheimischen - vor allem im Hostel -, kann ich über die Amerikaner nach einem Tag noch nicht so viel sagen, die Frau an der Rezeption für die Bustickets war zumindest sehr hilfsbereit und gab mir, nachdem meine Students-Advantage-Card nicht funktioniert hatte, kurzerhand ein verbilligtes Ticket für Senioren, um den Rabatt zu gewährleisten. Über die Menschen in New York City und meinen Last-Minute-Host hier werde ich in Abschnitt über diese Etappe schreiben. Eine interessante Begegnung haben ich noch am und im Bus gemacht. Ich kam mit Rolando aus Puerto Rico ins Gespräch, der im Moment bei einem Kumpel in Syracuse wohnt, da seine Heimat durch die beiden Hurricanes Irma und Maria derart zerstört ist, dass er dort im Moment nicht wohnen will. In wenigen Wochen geht sein Semester wieder los - von offizieller Seite soll die Universität dort dann wieder nutzbar gemacht worden sein - er bezweifelt das jedoch noch stark. Wir unterhielten uns auch darüber, wie die USA mit Puerto Rico umgehen, diesen Staat quasi wie eine Kolonie für steuerliche Vorteile ausnutzen, den Bewohnern zwar die Staatsbürgerschaft verleihen, aber ihnen kein Wahlrecht geben. Aufgrund unseres Geschichtsinteresses konnten wir hier interessante Paralleln zur Kolonienbildung im Römischen Reich feststellen - aber ich schweife schon wieder ab in Nerdszeug, I know :P
