Just found out Mizore died. If Otaru could please stop neglecting seals to death that would be great. That’s 7 now, not even including the 10 that are "missing" and the 34 without listed causes of death.

This is in Japan so obviously the animals have next to no rights and any sort of consequence can be swept away with a bit of money but surely it can’t be profitable to continue to slowly murder seals?

Mizore the ringed seal has passed away

Yesterday Otaru aquarium confirmed his death, he was only 3

Read below for some background on his situation (as well as my thoughts)

in august last year it was announced that Mizore from osaka aquarium was going to move to Otaru aquarium. This right away caused concern, mizore had a tricky birth, he was sick & his mother didn't want to care for him because of that, so the staff at osaka aquarium nursed him back to health and raised him. He had a very strong bond with the staff there as well as living with 2 other seals yuki & arare.

In october he was moved & it was said that he'd be moving for a breeding program, mizore only turned 3 this April and male ringed seals mate at around 7 so this was odd.

Once moved to otaru mizore was put in a small cube enclosure by himself. From what I saw from the people who went to visit him he hardly had any enrichment, he just sat around & scratched at the walls. At osaka mizores favourite spot was this litte raised ice shelf he could lean against and there was nothing alike it at otaru, I didn't see much videos of keepers coming in to play with him. He was very social & loved people. Otaru aquarium seems to have a tricky history with animals passing away which concerned people regarding Mizore moving there.

According to Otarus blog post he started to refuse food early June, that is an obvious sign of an animal stressed in its environment. On June 19th he would pass away.

It is very sad to say but I think poor mizore died of loneliness & a broken heart, he was neglected and isolated which over the course of 7 months wore him down until he couldn’t go on anymore. This never would've happened if he stayed at osaka aquarium and I, as well as many others, am very upset with the situation

Unfortunate News on Mizore the Ringed Seal

I'm heartbroken having to make this announcement, but Mizore the ringed seal has passed away at the tragically young age of three, only a few short months after his transfer to the Otaru Aquarium.

As someone who's watched his incredible journey from birth, it's so painful to hear that his story has ended so quickly. He was one of my favorite seals, and the shock is still hitting me now. He was always so happy and playful, and truly loved his keepers and he didn't hide his silly antics from the public as well, which is why he was so popular.

I hope you can rest in peace, our little seal prince. If you have something you love about him to share, please don't hesitate to say something in the notes.

Translation of the statement from Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan:

Today, June 19, 2024, we received word that Mizore, a ringed seal born at Kaiyukan and currently residing at Otaru Aquarium, has passed away. We are deeply saddened by this sudden and tragic news. We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone at Otaru Aquarium for caring for and displaying Mizore. Mizore is the first ringed seal to be born at Kaiyukan on April 1, 2021. Shortly after birth, the seal was found to have symptoms such as hypothermia, so keepers cared for him around the clock, and he was then raised entirely by hand, a first in Japan. The story was reported on Kaiyukan's official YouTube channel, social media, and the keepers' blog, "Kaiyukan Diary," teaching us the strength of life along with his adorable appearance. Even after his debut in the "Arctic" tank, he has remained extremely popular for his adorable interactions with the keepers and his frolicking with divers. Not only do Mizore's fans always gather in front of the exhibition tank, but he has also sparked communication among his fans, making new connections. I am truly sorry to hear this sad news, but I will continue to treasure the fond memories and connections that Mizore has left behind. Thank you so much to all the fans who have supported Mizore up until now. Rest in peace. Thank you, Mizore.

how greedy do you have to be to let such a wonderful seal die?

he wasn't there for breeding purposes—he wasn't old enough to breed. if that was the plan they'd have to keep him in that tiny enclosure for another 3 years before finally reintroducing him to the other seals. what they inflicted upon mizore is literal animal abuse and it's fucking disgusting to know they'll get away with it just like they did with the other animals they've let die under their care.

seven months of swimming in circles in pure social isolation. over a third of his life spent by himself with only the few clicks of cameras outside the glass, and they'll get away with no consequences by claiming they had nothing to do with it. he was unhealthy, he had birth defects, and it had "nothing to do with them." and yet that entirely falls apart when you ask why they'd choose an unhealthy seal for a breeding program.

fuck everyone involved in the enclosure setup for mizore, and fuck the people in charge of the aquarium who keep letting their animals die.

I’m so moved by the Japanese seal fans and their mourning for Mizore. I’m still not over the death of Ponsuke a year ago. Anyway, I sketched some seal fan art. Swim free forever, sealy boys.

This whole situation is so fucked up. Mizore was moved away to a different aquarium (Otaru Aquarium) as part of a breeding program - which would be normal and fine in other circumstances except Mizore was only 3 years old when he died and ringed seals dont tend to mate until theyre 7 years old. Already weird. In the new aquarium his enclosure was apparently very isolated with not a lot of enrichment and visitors said he was acting weird and swimming in circles for ages etc.etc. Mizore was very well socialised as he was raised by hand, and was used to having lots of enrichment and socialisation. He died in Otaru aquarium - and they wont even tell us what happened. They're actively blocking accounts who ask about his cause of death. Not even a 'we're waiting for the results'. Ponsuke's cause of death was released in 15 days. It's been over a month since Mizore died and nothing. Awfully fucking suspicious. He deserved so, so much better.
