the ribbon seals most defining feature, their stripes, take 4 years to develop!

here is a short timeline of their development 🦭

adorable white coat ribbon seal pups. this baby fur is called lanugo.

after around 1 month pups will start shedding their baby fur to reveal a grey and silver coat

young seals with their grey and silver coat

then, the juvenile seals with start to develop their stripes over the next 3 years. they grow stronger with each moult, females can reach sexual maturity before they have fully developed stripes. this mothers stripes aren’t fully there yet.

once they’re 4 years old a ribbon seals stripes will have fully developed.

male and female are easy to tell apart by their coat colour, the males will have bold black and white stripes

whereas the females have more brown/beige/silver stripes

The teeth of a crabeater seal

Specially evolved for sieving krill & small crustaceans out of the seawater! These highly adapted seals are the most abundant species of pinniped on the planet.

As pups, Elephant seals are very curious of their surroundings and often go up to investigate photographers (who aren’t allowed to touch them and instead have to sit there getting poked and crawled on by these very large babies)

3 seal species I see commonly mistaken for each other, and how to tell them apart!

starting off with

Harbour seals/common seals

Harbour seals have a wide variety in coat colours, some having a more sandy coat whereas others have more spotty or dark coats. I find the easiest way to tell them apart is in their face shape!

Pups are spotty with short baby fur, they tend not to be too fat as compared to species that live in colder climates.

Spotted seals

Spotted seals are well... spotted! they have a light underbelly and a darker grey top side, their whole bodies are covered in spots.

Spotted seal pups are fluffy and fat, they have a white coat. Not to be mistaken for harp seal pups as they lack the darker snout that harp seals have.

Ringed seals

Ringed seals are smaller than harbour and spotted seals, they have ring like markings along their backs and have shorter snouts. They live in cold climates so are very blubbery and round. Male ringed seals get dark wrinkly faces as they reach maturity.

Ringed seal pups are very small and white, with short snouts and little eyebrow dots.
