Tras haber estado avanzando con el proyecto, hemos decidido seguir en la línea de la elección de los colores como parte fundamental de la arquitectura, tal y como mencionamos en nuestro primer post de este cuatrimestre.

En su día comentamos la relación entre los colores rojo y gris, y posteriormente de ambos con el negro. Se habló en clase de que, si echamos la vista atrás, España se resume en rojo y negro, colores que representan la fuerza y la sangre, y la muerte y el luto respectivamente. Estos dos, junto con el gris, asociado generalmente con la rutina, serán la base de nuestro espacio. Creemos que no hay tres colores mejores para abrirnos paso en este proyecto, y es por ello que antes de comenzar hemos buscado alguna referencia que nos sirva de guía.

Dicha referencia es la Casa Mlawa, de James & Mau, una vivienda unifamiliar situada en Polonia que juega con la mezcla de ladrillo rojo, hormigón gris y acero negro o un material parecido. Nos gusta mucho la división de alturas a través del cambio de material, y nos gustaría utilizar una técnica similar.

Activity- November

On second of November we had research days and I and my close friend Marta traveled from Warsaw to Mlawa, small town 100km from Warsaw. And on this particular day we decided to take a walk and explore nature that surrounds us.

Our decision to explore the forest was inspired by a desire to connect with nature more deeply. We had often heard of the therapeutic benefits of forest walks and wanted to experience it firsthand. My friend, who is a nature enthusiast, had a particular interest in identifying local plant species and wildlife, making it a journey of both leisure and learning.

To ensure our forest walk would be comfortable and safe, we took the time to prepare adequately. Here's what we did:

Research: We researched maps to find the best path for us and our preference as we walked with my dog without the leash. That is why we had to chose longer path, however it was next to forest that my dog could freely walk around.

Attire: We dressed in comfortable, moisture-wicking clothing and most comfortable boots. Additionally, we brought along hats and sunglasses to protect ourselves from the sun.

Provisions: We packed a backpack with essentials, including water for my dog and us.

Leash and Treats: Of course, our furry friend joined us, so we made sure to bring a sturdy leash for when we walk next to street and some treats for him.

Reflections: The forest provided an ideal backdrop for self-reflection. The serene atmosphere allowed us to let go of our daily worries and focus on the present moment. As we walked, we discussed the importance of disconnecting from our screens and embracing the simplicity of nature.

But the event’s producer, Agnieszka Rychcik-Nowakowska, sees it as a way of commemorating the hundreds of Jews who had accounted for approximately half of her village’s population before the Holocaust.

“We want to remember all those homes of all pre-war Jews, who lived a peaceful life punctuated by the rhythm of holidays, family celebrations and more mundane events,” she told the news site Nasza Mlawa.

Jews first settled in Radzanów in 1710, and at their peak numbered about 500. By September 1939, when the Germans took over, the population had dipped below 300. Nearly all who remained would be sent to the Mlawa ghetto, never to return. “We remember those who lived here before us and entered the memory of our grandmothers and grandparents. It was so recently,” said Rychcik-Nowakowska.

Ah yes. The peaceful life of Jews in pre-war Poland. Punctuated with mundane events like pogroms, segregation, being forced to pay the Polish crown for protection from the rest of Poland and then being slaughtered by the Polish peasant class for being “allied with the noble class,” and being accused of plotting against Poland during wars. Peaceful.
