Lore: 

In the far, far future, eight planets orbit a sun. While none of these planets are capable of sustaining life, people live in “bubble cities” on the surfaces of the planets, and on space stations orbiting around them. Their advanced technology allows them to survive- and among that advanced technology is robots. Robots to clean their homes. Robots to serve them food. Robots to work in factories. Robots to drive their ships. 

Robots to protect them. Robots to kill for them. The Murphys live on a small, red planet called Rusoma, in the bubble city of Danville. Their unusual genetic condition- officially Extreme Hereditary Murphy’s Law, and more colloquially simply Murphy’s Law- can make life dangerous, especially in an environment where the lives of millions rely on technology. Despite this, they handle their condition well and prosper- but everyone can use some help. When Milo Murphy turned six, his parents decided to buy a MEL robot- a Mechanical Escort Life-Preserver. The perfect babysitter and companion for their young son, the MEL robot can help him survive in all manner of disasters, big and small. She is even built to be child friendly. So they weren’t surprised when Milo immediately became attached to her, calling her his best friend and treating her like that. 

What did surprise them was the MEL robot- nicknamed Melissa by Milo- developing sentience. A few years later, Milo is thirteen. Melissa is his best friend, and treated as part of the family by the Murphys. But one day, disaster strikes. The family are called to the police office in the middle of the night, to discover that Melissa killed someone. Having left the house in the middle of the night, she malfunctioned and fatally attacked someone. At least, that’s the story. 

Melissa insists that she didn’t do it, and Milo believes her. But she was found, shut off and covered in blood, next to the body. Her camera malfunctioned, leaving no footage in the time before and during the incident, and, crucially, her memory storage malfunctioned. She has no idea what happened, with a dark spot between entering the park and waking up at the police station. 

Of course, a robot can’t be charged with a crime, as they aren’t supposed to be sentient. But everyone thinks that Melissa malfunctioned. And a robot that malfunctions and attacks innocents is dangerous. So the authorities decide to deactivate her. Milo is horrified, and when he can’t prove her innocence to save her he does the next best thing- he steals her back and flees the planet, becoming a fugitive to keep her safe. But being a fugitive causes its own problems, and they will never be able to go home until they can find the truth. Because if Melissa didn’t kill that person, who did?

the sci fi au!!! I finally settled on designs for Milo and Melissa, and wrote up the lore post. So here you go! So Melissa is smaller than a 13 year old, but taller than a 6 year old. And yes, she does complain about Milo growing taller than her. Regularly.  She doesn’t need a space suit to survive outside of cities/ships/shuttles/space stations ect, but she has a lil suit anyway because Milo 

She is very, very protective of Milo. But at the same time, Milo is protective of her. They’re really close. 

Aside from Milo and Melissa, I have stuff for some other characters. Obviously Zack is the one I thought about most after the two of them- Zack is also a robot. I haven’t come up with a name, but I want it to have an acronym like ZAC or ZAK. I’ll workshop that. But basically, he’s one of the ‘killer robots’ that were the whole point of the original concept for this au- he has been built and programmed as a protector for exploring hostile planets outwith the solar system. In practise, Zack is considered a defect. He developed sentience, and was unable to convincingly act like a ruthless, unfeeling robot. So he was literally thrown out, and Milo and Melissa find him in a rubbish dump while searching for scrap. They adopt him, and his arc is about learning that even if he can’t do what he is made for, he isn’t worthless. 

Also his design, which i haven’t perfected yet, is based off of Warhammer 40k Kastelan robots, if you wanna get a feel for what he’ll look like. I love Kastelan robots, they look so fun and chunky. Cavendish works for the Solar Government. Dakota is a robot, and his bodyguard. Dakota is a “defect” like Melissa and Zack, but hides it well because he wants to stay with Cav to protect him. Cavendish is assigned to capture Milo and Melissa, hijinx ensue. I’m not sure what direction I’d want the story to go in, but I’m leaning towards a murder mystery- but a murder mystery in space. The main plot being focused on Milo and Melissa figuring out who really did that murder, so they can go home. Obviously a lot of stuff isn’t finalised, but I hope you like what I’ve got so far!

1,000 views Milestone and more

Hello everyone. Today I have come to talk about the most important milestone the fic has ever reached. A little bit ago, New Frontier reached 1k views on Ao3 and it honestly made me so proud, happy and satisfied with seeing such a number, even after months of hiatus and inactivity. The support that this fic has received is... honestly something I never expected.

If I may go off character for a bit, I want to tell you guys a few guys. I created this fic just for myself, for my own sake and to show the fandom some cool stuff, some action and my type of writing that I tend to like and go for. The first version was very much a showcase of inexperience and lack of understanding for a lot of things when it came to writing, but it was still the most fun I had writing the fic.

Then I went to reread what I had created and written... I started to see the cracks, to see that what I had put on the paper just wasn't as amazing as I first thought it was. So with that in mind, I decided to start going back and rewrite previous chapters, as it felt necessary and I felt it could elevate the story to higher levels and although that was pretty fun at first, it started to drain me pretty bad in the lenghtier chapters. It started to feel like a job.

The chapters have absolutely improved and I feel the fic's direction is in a much better spot, but I had to fight myself to get the motivation to keep going. Being honest, I was very much considering the possibility of dropping the fic on its entirety. as it truly felt that draining and boring to write. I wasn't doing new stuff, I was just rewriting older stuff and noticing my many mistakes!

My friends like CharmmyColour and LonelyLittleShips adviced me to write other parts of the story that were more exciting or thrilling. I honestly didn't think that was going to work out and I still tried to write through Chapter's 5 and 6 with a pessimistic and saddened state of mind.

That was until GoldenTulipLynx (my current cowriter) came into my life a year ago. We started to discuss more of the fic and he actively encouraged me more and more to write a few months ago. He told me to do so at least once a week to get some progress done and I did. It wasn't a perfect process, but it definitely led me to write more. Then he suggested me to write something exciting and for the first time, I actually listened to that advice and...

It worked. It gave me my inspiration back somewhat and it made me want to get writing more and more. If it wasn't for his inspiration and also the encouragement from my other friends, I may have cancelled the fic as a whole, so for that I'm truly grateful to them.

What I'm also grateful for is have fans and followers that have been patient, loyal and comprehensive towards the fic's state and progress. This took so long because I wanted to give you guys something worthy of that much of a wait and also have fun while doing so.

I really wanted this message to be special, as I felt the ocassion was the perfect time to do so. Truly, thank you guys. Thank you for still being here and I hope you look forward to what else I have cooking up.

And because I knew this was such a special ocassion/milestone, I also wanted to give you guys something exceptional, so with that in mind... I commissioned some art for New Frontier as a treat for you guys, one that displays Cavendish with his rifle in a wonderful forest, one that's going to be the usual hangout spot for him and Dakota.

I’m trying to design Robot-Melissa for my sci-fi au, but it turns out designing robots is hard, especially when I like chunky lil ones

I’ll make a proper lore post soon, but rn- in this universe people buy robots for all sorts of things, ranging from household robots, to robots that work in construction sites, to bodyguard robots. Melissa is a pretty small (taller than a 6 year old but smaller than a 13 year old, haven’t worked out the specifics yet) robot that the Murphys got to help Milo deal with Murphy’s Law when he was little. Milo decided that Melissa was his new best friend, and pretty quickly she gained sentience and actually became his best friend, as well as his family just treating her like their third child when they figured that out.

She gets accused of murder eventually, kick starting the Plot

So I was AIMING for a small, cute looking robot that you might buy for house stuff, but that also looks like it’s capable of surviving in rough situations

 “Explain to me again,” Cavendish said, setting the disinfectant down. “What was the point of touching it?”

“You saw that thing, it was so squishy. I had to!” Dakota used his free hand to pass the roll of bandages to Cavendish. “Besides, how was i supposed to know that, like, all of it was mouth?”

Cavendish scoffed and shook his head and started wrapping up Dakota’s hand. Though cleaned, blood was still coming through. “Every other hour, it seems like I have to pull you back up here, leaking-”

“Bleeding.”

“Bleeding. Would it really be so hard to think before you stick your hand into something? Just for once?”

“It’s a primal urge, I can’t help it,” Dakota said. “It’s the whole reason space travel even exists. Humans were made to poke stuff.”

Cavendish rolled his eyes. “What an honorable directive. I should be so jealous.”

“Hey, come on, it’s not like I make you patch me up afterwards. I mean I’ve got my other hand, it’s not that hard-” Finally, something clicked. Dakota put on an infuriating sly smile. “Wait a minute. You like fixing me up, don’t you?”

“I do not!” Cavendish’s own gears betrayed him, running faster and faster, loud enough to hear.

“You do!” Dakota pointed at him with his free hand, like he’d caught him in the middle of sneaking around. “No judgement, just- well I just figured you’d find it kind of gross. All the blood and skin and stuff.”

“I just- find it interesting- completely objectively,” Cavendish tried to lie. “You go through all the trouble of growing your own skin, just to stick it in places it doesn’t belong.”

“Come on, I know you know it grows back.” Dakota tried to push, even as Cavendish tied the end of the bandage around. He flexed his fingers. “You don’t have to have a logical reason for everything, Cavendish.”

Cavendish settled his own hard, cool fingers against Dakota’s soft, warm palm. “Easy for you to say.”

but yeah i would say so ! it’s not anything you could probably do with a person tho (electricity/digging around Under The Skin often times Breaks The Human), but cav being the one of a kind robot that he is, he has his own displays of affection

cavendish actually has a lot of Stuff going on, internally, i think dakota would actually be kind of afraid of breaking him, so the worst he does is make some jokes and slap some stickers on cav cavendish however would take to suggesting upgrades for dakota very earnestly. it's terrifying

speaking of cold is cav like a car engine and, when its just Too Chilly Out, he gets all slow and just Doesnt Work?? also. if so does dakota pile space coats on him??

oh yeah for sure, he can get too cold and freeze over and especially lose his range of motion

as romantic as piling on coats is im sure he just sets him under some defrosting vents and blasts them like crazy
