Dune Awakening Class Guide: Swordmaster to Smuggler
youtube
Introduction: Picking the Right Class in Dune Awakening
Starting your journey in Dune Awakening means choosing a class that matches your style of play. Unlike other MMOs, the class you select here shapes more than just combat—it defines how you survive, fight, and grow in the harsh desert of Arrakis. This guide covers all five classes, their strengths, signature skills, and the type of players they suit best. And yes, while you can switch classes later on, your first choice will still define your early-game experience.
Swordmaster: Melee Expert and Frontline Leader
If close-range combat and fast-paced action sound like your thing, the Swordmaster might be your best bet. Trained in precision and agility, Swordmasters rely on skillful timing and quick reflexes instead of brute force or tech.
Starting Ability: Deflection – lets you block incoming projectiles and counter with a swift strike.
Playstyle: Great for aggressive players who love diving into battles and outmaneuvering enemies with fast dodges.
Strengths: High damage, fast mobility, excellent for solo and frontline play.
Advanced Skills: Unlock stamina-based combos, movement boosts, and elemental melee techniques later in the game.
Recommended for: Players who want fast, fluid combat and don’t mind a bit of a learning curve.
Bene Gesserit: Tactical Manipulator with Mind-Control Skills
The Bene Gesserit class is all about psychological warfare and subtle influence. These aren’t brawlers, but they can absolutely control the flow of a fight.
Starting Ability: Voice Compel – forces enemies to follow your verbal commands, like walking out of cover or into danger.
Playstyle: Ideal for those who prefer tactics and control over brute strength.
Strengths: Unique mind-control mechanics, great dodging, and excellent in duels or missions involving deception.
Advanced Skills: Unlock enhanced recognition, advanced dodges, and environmental resistances.
Recommended for: Players who enjoy manipulation, stealthy gameplay, and outsmarting their opponents.
Mentat: The Strategic Genius and Battlefield Support
Mentats are the brains of the battlefield. They process info faster than most computers and play more of a support or tactical role.
Starting Ability: Mark Weakness – highlights enemy vulnerabilities so they take more damage from all sources.
Playstyle: Support-focused but not helpless. These are the players who always know what’s coming next.
Strengths: Battlefield scanning, drone deployment, enemy tracking, and environmental prediction.
Advanced Skills: Tech-based support, hacking, surveillance, and even weather forecasting.
Recommended for: Strategic players who love planning ahead, analyzing combat, and giving their team the edge.
Fremen Survivalist: The Master of the Desert
For players who love exploration and survival, the Fremen Survivalist is unmatched. These desert dwellers are tuned into the terrain and thrive where others struggle.
Starting Ability: Sand Walk – lets you move quietly across the desert without drawing sandworms.
Playstyle: Balanced between survival, mobility, and long-range ambush tactics.
Strengths: Heat resistance, environmental adaptation, and terrain-based combat tricks.
Advanced Skills: Trap setting, desert creature summoning, terrain camouflage.
Recommended for: Players focused on open-world exploration, gathering, and living off the land.
Smuggler: The Independent All-Rounder
If freedom is what you’re after, the Smuggler lets you play your own way. They’re not tied to factions and offer a mix of stealth, ranged combat, and economic advantage.
Starting Ability: Smoke Screen – deploys cover that breaks line-of-sight for sneaky escapes or ambushes.
Playstyle: Flexible. Smugglers are ideal for solo play, trade, stealth, or sabotage.
Strengths: Trade routes, rare blueprints, black market access, and trap-based skills.
Advanced Skills: Black market dealings, vehicle mods, contraband runs, and infiltration.
Recommended for: Players who like sandbox freedom, want to profit from gameplay, or enjoy operating outside the rules.

Which Class Should You Choose First?
While you can eventually switch classes in Dune Awakening, your first pick really matters during early gameplay. Here's a cheat sheet to help:
Pick Swordmaster if you want to jump into the action and lead fights.
Choose Bene Gesserit if you prefer clever play and manipulating outcomes.
Go Mentat for support and battlefield control roles.
Try Fremen Survivalist if exploring and surviving in harsh zones appeals to you.
Select Smuggler for freedom, trade, and stealth-based versatility.
And yes—hybrid builds are possible later on. Mix and match skills from different paths to create your own playstyle. For example, a Swordmaster with desert movement from the Fremen path, or a Bene Gesserit who dabbles in smuggling tech.
Conclusion: Shape Your Destiny in Dune Awakening
The class system in Dune Awakening offers flexibility and depth. Whether you want to brawl on the frontlines, outwit your enemies, dominate the economy, or simply survive the sands, there’s a class that fits. Don’t stress too much—your starting class is just the beginning. The world of Arrakis rewards creativity and exploration, so dive in and start experimenting.

have super torn through the materials from the $bp, nice to make good progress on some characters though (like march/himeko/yukong and their light cones as I mentioned earlier). also did a ton more work again on evaluating relics. making sure to max out any gold ones that have 2+ needed substats. been trying to be conservative with the resources but that's holding my characters back, they're weak bc of low relics. so i think i've been too picky waiting. so yeah, so long as it's got the right main stat and at least 2 substats, i'm upgrading.
also then had to take a ton of time to do more with salvaging to then generate more of the material, and i really struggle with salvaging what really isn't a great item vs but what if a future character needs it or what if a 2/4 pc bonus combines with unexpected stats and gets recommended in the guides, like i wouldn't have suspected healing stats being needed on what looks to be non healing relic types. so hard to know what's trash and what the guides are going to suddenly say is useful. (and jfc is everyone going to end up in hackerspace?)
but doing my best. trying to use mats and not just hoard them for 'just in case' when characters need them now and i can tell it's why i'm so much weaker than other players. and trying to learn, like i know it takes me so much longer to pick up this information (just finally getting to where i understand pity and 50-50). wish there were a bit more info on this stuff for those of us who're new to hoyo games (like my dabbling in genshin never got me to gearing and evaluating stats so sr is basically my first).
not that many levels left on the battle passes, i'm in the 40s, so yeah, it'll be a bummer when that dries up. bc there's quite a while left before the new one.
#it'd still be nice if i could find people doing text guides about salvaging basics i'll have to keep looking#just not youtube i need writing >_>;#it's sad that i'm this game dumb but i've always been like that#took me all of vanilla wow to really learn the basics of mmos and raiding and to start to understand my class (rogue)#ofc then i promptly switched to warlock with burning crusade lol#but i think this style of game is different enough that i've really been clueless even though it's been since june#though it's *only* been since june like a few months? compared to the years i spent in other games (or near a decade and a half in wow)#it's just kind of like i think so many are so familiar with these systems from so much time in genshin or even that other honkai game#that it's all second nature like everyone's in hoyo college and i'm still in grade school#trying to find guides that handhold and speak to my 'for dummies' level >_>;;#and lord i still don't know if i'm rushing it and wasting materials maxing out upgrades on relics that match 2+ substats#maybe others wait for 3 or 4 substats? bc i tried and was upgrading so few it was so rare?#or do people max out just if the main stat matches or with that or one substat?#this is where i miss the social aspects of mmos i could ask others easier and compare what i was doing vs them#i like game8.co but i still have made so many so many mistakes bc even being a guide that assumes more knowledge of the system than i had#like i needed guides that said no don't trust their automatic relic assignment button it's bad you have to evaluate each item and here's ho#and here's where you use your resources to upgrade#finally have the achievement for synthesizing 5 relics though i'm going to be super cautious on doing more#what with the extreme rarity of the resin#anyway... babbling to the void here i know#please ignore my sr bs#and figures i salvage all that disciple stuff bc i don't have blade and the guides say other stuff for arlan (who i won't lvl for ages)#only to find out that it's exactly what fx will need and while i don't have her what if i do get her?#it's exactly why i've been in 'save everything' mode bc the moment i got rid of something i didn't need whoops turns out it might be needed#i swear this game makes me so often feel like i'm always not doing the right thing while constantly doing the wrong thing#i'd like to feel like i truly understand the basics and am mostly competent with them but i'm not to that point yet :/

Requested by: @chubypotato Heyy ! I hope you are doing okay! Sooo I saw you were doing some x talkative how do u think about doing the same for kiryu +the S/O being an absolute gamer. I'm dying for more kiryu since we didn't see him that much on the anime I can't wait for him to be popular cause he is such a cutie 😭
Ah yes, I'm always up to write for characters that need more recognition. I focused more on the gamer part, hope it's okay 🤞😉
Ps. I just want to say, chapter 146 left me in tears - what the heck was that friendship is magic moment.
Also, Hiiragi looks pretty cool in the last few chapters - I just had to acknowledge it. 🤩
Mitsuki Kiryu x Talkative! Gamer! reader

You were a talkative gamer, a helpful talkative gamer, who was well-known across the whole server in the MMO game you played. You loved the game and spent a lot of time reading about it, getting to know the mechanics, item drop rates, and side missions that were the most useful. With all the knowledge you might as well be referred to as an encyclopedia.
Honestly, it was all because of Mitsuki. It was he who introduced you to the title and the one who spent his free time going through some tactics and game designs with you. His enthusiastic self made you invested in his favourite game, at first, wanting to spend more time with him, until you installed it, and in the next few hours, it became your favourite as well.
During your low-level playtime, Mitsuki made it his mission to guide you in his own special way. You would talk with him on Discord about the plot and missions you had to do and this man, being higher level than you, knew exactly what you were supposed to do but gave it his best to mislead you. Stealing your kills, leading you who knew where. Whenever he did deceive you, he giggled playfully and you heard it all on your headphones. In retaliation, you talked his ears off about how he could do something like that to you.
After yet another time you were so over it, you started reading whatever info on the internet you could find, just so you knew if he was teasing you or not. Through your frustrations and time-consuming playthrough, you started helping out others, knowing how much time you spent on some missions. If they didn't know something and asked you were usually the first one to answer, sometimes right after Mitsuki who kept being mischievous little shit and leading everyone astray.
You became a really well-known pair, as you almost always played together and grouped together for missions. Mitsuki was the mischievous one who you couldn't be sure if he wanted to help you or get you killed by monsters, while you were the "guardian angel", the true helper. Needless to say, your friend slots were quickly full and everyone added you on discord, you felt almost like a star on the server.
Your chatty attitude and random conversations usually didn't stray away from the topic of games and Mitsuki was one of the few people that let you endlessly rant. Of course, you had a lot of playful arguments about your, self-proclaimed, best classes and build of characters, but otherwise, Mitsuki carefully listened to you talking, sharing your likes and dislikes about the characters, missions, and even game series.
There were some times those arguments were a little more heated, and other times they were led on the discord group call with other people from the server, who quietly listened to your passionate arguments on why you preferred to skill up these certain attributes for your character.
Mitsuki heard you talking, listening in on the little guiding session you gave some of the users on the discord call, while you were getting ready to kill one of the bosses. He was sitting in the same room playing on his phone, and waiting for you to finish.
Mitsuki was so proud of you, of the little crowd you gathered around yourself to listen to you talk, of the happy smiles that appeared on your face whenever someone thanked you, of the possibility of sharing the same passion as you. He was very supportive in your search for knowledge and sharing it with others, even if it didn't show once in a time.
He didn't mind when you showed off your relationship in front of the server and other players, rather he liked it.
You heard a familiar ding letting you know another person joined the call while you were in the middle of telling the rest of your party about the boss' attacks and skills.
"Well hello there." The voice said as soon as you took a short breather asking if the guys understood what you said.
"Hi there, are you joining us for a boss battle?" You asked joyfully.
It was always better to get more people even if the loot might not be that great.
"Why don't we go for a little private session?" They continued in this false seductive voice that made your head tilt and eyebrows furrow.
"No thank you, we can talk here if you want."
"I'd prefer a date, babe." They replied right after you and everyone could hear the big sight you let out when you understood why they joined.
"Ugh.. please stop, it's embarrassing." One of your party members commented followed by others.
"Second-hand embarrassment."
"Cringe."
You thanked them all in your mind for saying out loud what you thought.
"Before you say anything else, be aware I've got a boyfriend." Your voice echoed in the call but they were not getting the hint.
"Yeah sure, you do."
At that moment, you were almost sure he was new on the game serve, and certainly new on the discord server, because the fact that you dated Mitsuki, known under his nickname, was a fact everyone knew.
"Mistuki, can you come here for a moment." You said turning to your boyfriend lying on your bed. When he came close enough you went to the discord call and turned on your camera. Giving it a knowing look you looked at Mitsuki and your hand moved to his neck bringing him closer to you.
He smirked knowing well enough what you were doing and before your lips touched he grinned joyfully.
You kissed him straight on the lips, a firm and casual kiss. Your headphones fell to your lap but before that, you still heard the gasps of everyone else.
When you pulled away a smile appeared on your and Mitsuki's faces. You grabbed your headphones placing them around your neck.
Mitsuki knew you had a way with words and your chatty personality could bring attention to you. He was also aware that you knew how to get yourself out of every situation and he would readily help you if you wanted to use him in your shenanigans.
"Now, do you-" You started but when your eyes scanned the call, you didn't see the newcomer anymore. "Oh, he left."
"What a shame." Mitsuki said placing a quick peck on your lips before going back to his place on your bed.
You laughed at his words before turning the cam off.
"Well, let's quickly kill the boss." You said and continued to guide your party to the boss.

Imo if an rpg has a definitive min-maxing optimal build (between race, class, stat distribution), it is a poorly designed rpg.
Every race should have distinct, useful traits or strengths. Every class should be quality in its own unique way and handle its own particular niche. Every stat configuration should lend itself to combat/gameplay style.
If you can consult a guide that instructs you step-by-step what class to choose, what race to choose, and what stats to distribute at what specific level to create the inarguably best build, the devs have failed to make a truly engaging and flexable gameplay system.
Someone once asked on r/dos2 what the #1 optimal min-maxing configuration was. Everyone replied that it doesn't exist. Every configuration has positive and negative aspects to account for during gameplay, so just choose what seems cool.
This person argued that that's nonsense, every game has an optimal build. That it is impossible not to. They got downvoted into the pits of hell lmao and everyone kept trying to explain to them that dos2 is such a tightly designed game that such an oversight simply does not exist.
There is no One Best Class, there is no One Best Race, there is no One Best Stat Distribution, there is no One Best Party Configuration. Everything has positives and negatives to account for.
I feel like that guy played a lot of bad/old rpgs in his time. And more than likely a lot of them were mmos.
Before bg3, basically any list of "best crpgs" had dos2 sitting at #1, and it was there for a reason. Larian fucking tore it up designing that game.
Which race to choose? Humans are economical, lizards are persuasive, elves provide otherwise inaccessable lore, idk what dwarves do I never play one lol, undead change up gameplay fundamentally. And that doesn't account for storytelling aspects.
Which class? All of them have their own strengths. Elementalists are squishy as fuck but they dominate surface effect control (extremely important in this game) and mass damage/crowd control. Rogues are also squishy and do pretty low damage, but their single-target debuffs are lethal. Summoners can't do a lot on their own but once you hit summoning level 10 (especially if you have gear to push it even higher) your summoned creature can carry entire combat scenarios solo. Inquisitors can absorb massive damage and they have superb crowd control. Necromancers can summon, debuff, and heal. Don't get me started on hybrid classes and skill synergies. And oh my lord if I talk about home-brew class creation I can be here all day.
Stat distrobution? Depends entirely on your gameplay style and personal preferences. Wanna get rich? Points into bartering, thievery, and loremaster. Not really a combat guy? Persuasion (you can literally tell the end-game boss to kick rocks and win the game without a single strike if you play it right). Want lore and puzzle hints, especially pertaining to the entirely optional side-plot around the squirrel/cat skeleton pair that follows you through the game? Petpal. Wanna hit stuff harder? Warfare. Tanking? Constitution. Crit-focused? Scoundrel. I could go on.
Always get Morning Person tho lmfao it'll save your sorry hide early game.
Which party members? Because all of their classes can be changed without any interruption to narrative flow and cohesion (unlike bg3, which I've posted about in the past), its simply who seems the most interesting. You have a little chat in the starting zone, they give you a quick taste of their basic story and personality, and you simply pick whoever seems the most interesting.
I forgot where I was going with this post ngl. Something something Larian are masters of rpg game design. Dos2 is a masterpiece. Bg3 is a glorified dos3 with a dnd coat of paint. I want to give Larian 80 billion dollars simply out of appreciation for their craft. I'm waiting with bated breath for dos3 proper.

hello, I just followed for your orctober stuff and scrolled through some of your blog and wanted to ask, what is guild wars 2?
OOOH BOY HERE I GO! ahem.
Guild Wars 2 is a high fantasy MMO, similar to maybe Final Fantasy Online. Guid Wars as a series is about as old as World of Warcraft, but has a much smaller fanbase; mostly because the company behind it, ArenaNet, seems to be allergic to advertisements (it's gotten better since the last two expansions).
These days, the core game is free, with only the expansions costing money. Well, some expansions, as they just throw in older expacs for free now. Even if you start with a free account, you can technically buy an upgrade by just... using ingame currency, which is a WILD concept to me.
Most notable features of the game are probably the character customization, free dyeing of armor, and a few thousand unique armor and weapon skins. Players often joke that the true endgame of GW2 is fashion (and they are RIGHT goddamnit). All five playable races are so ridiculously detailed in lore and design, it's incredible. Sylvari for example are not plain elves, they are full on plant constructs that grow from fruits on the mother tree. Asura are not just gnomes/goblins, they are a highly educated society of geniuses that would openly strive for world domination if it werent for their inherent bureaucratic tendencies.
The mounts in GW2 are among the best you will find anywhere, so much that World of Warcraft just copied some for their Dragonflight expansion.
Guild Wars 2 has a medium sized active player base, smaller than WoW or FFXIV, but they are an amazing community. We have veteran players, including me, who routinely patrol the starter maps to offer advice and maybe some healing to newbies (supported by the ingame mentor system). You might receive random mail from players gifting some cake. There's festivals, community parties, role playing, fashion contests, races and minigames.
If you are a seasoned MMO player, GW2 offers raids and the smaller strike system, which is being constantly expanded. Extreme MMO experts might find the game a bit flat, but that's only superficial. For beginners, I'd say the story is beatifully written. You can explore the open world, meeting players along the way (every map holds around 50-80 player at a time). You can choose any class and complete any content, including endgame. Any class, any race, (almost) any playstyle is viable, and nothing about your build is permanent, you can adjust your whole build on the fly.
Aside from the obvious MMO parts, GW2 also has structured PvP (5 vs 5 players) and the so called World vs World, which is a large scale week-long epic battle of three teams of around 50 players on each side (which btw is not as draining on the CPU as you'd think)
If you plan on giving it a try, I'd be more than happy to give you a more detailed overview of the game. This little chaotic hellhole of an MMO is very dear to my heart <3
This is by the way for ANYONE reading this: If any of you want to try the game, hit me up. DM me here on tumblr, or on discord (@ achromant). Even if you already play the game and are still new or just lost - ask me anything you want. I have close to 18k ingame hours.
#gw2#guild wars 2#ask achro#also i LOVE meeting new people ingame!#we even got furries#and elves#and gnomes#and ogres#and undead sassy lich overlords#and that one psycho pumpkin king dude#pumpkin dude and lich dude are husbands according to the fandom#also we got zombies#and plant zombies and crystal zombies and ice zombies#and dragons who are responsible for most of the zombie population to be honest#you can fight the personification of death#or kill a god

I'm pretty good at avoiding having my Paladins Oaths not get broken in BG3, but a momentary lapse had my Paladin Lae'zel falling because she threw an explosive barrel at Dror Ragzlin out of combat, so I met the Oathbreaker Knight for the first time. And started to laugh.
See, I play Final Fantasy 14. If you're unfamiliar with the MMO, one of the classes is the Dark Knight. And how Baldur's Gate 3 presents the Oathbreaker is basically lifted wholesale from the lore of the Dark Knight from FF14, and the Oathbreaker Knight is basically just Fray. A person clad in dark armor, obscuring helmet, and glowing eyes, who acts as a guide for the new knight to their newfound powers and only speaks to them?
And, I mean, there's already a Heavensward reference in BG3 (One of Folk Hero/Wyll's Inspirations is titled A Smile Better Suits...) so you can't tell me there's at least some people in Larian that plays FF14.

top 5 games?
Okay kinda tough but let's see
Felvidek Okay, kind of an obvious choice given my recent obsession with it, but it's so great. It's an RPGMaker game where you play as Pavol, an alcoholic knight whose wife left him, who is at first tasked with finding out what struck the old castle, to later joining an emerging cult that has been recruiting the locals and making them disappear, accompanied by Matej, a priest from Debrecen, who's original task was trying to get Pavol off of alcohol. You don't need to level up, you just need good equipment and strategy to win all battles you encounter(and there are optional ones too, but they're not worth it unless you want more crowns). The ending is also extended as you help certain NPCs.
Kynseed Harvest Moon/Stardew Valley kinda farming game where you inherit your uncle's farm, have a little fight with your sibling you gotta make up with later, and some mysteries to uncover. There's wayyy more to the game though, for instance you have to have good reputation with the villagers in all villages to initiate certain quests or buy certain shops to maintain AND if you are particularly nice to some villagers and their family members(even in later generations!) you get to piece together a code you get bit by bit as you talk to them after a certain friendship level for a locked chest with money or resources. You can get boons from some sort of hare time fae in exchange for some years off your life, there's also combat regions and the combat mechanics themselves are really neat. You can also gather notes to find out how to grow high quality crops, learn recipes, and read journals for additional lore about the world.
Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight Okay so, Momodora is a game series(I'm almost through 4 of them!) and playing all will give you some lore, but the 4th and 5th entries are the best. The 4th, RUtM honestly made my jaw drop, especially after seeing the previous games. You play as Kaho Reinol, a priestess from Lun who seeks the queen of Karst to combat corruption, but the queen has been cursed along with her country, and it's up to you to fix it. The visuals are absolutely stunning and the combat is really great, and along the way you can collect items to apply modifiers to your weapons or gain a certain ability, as well as for healing and damage boost(some of which get permanently increased as you find more of them, and every time you hit a bell to save, all restock). You also get boons for defeating bosses without taking damage, which is difficult, but worth trying (note: if you do wanna attempt, quit to the menu and reload to the last save if you get hit or die). There's also a spider at the beginning of the game that if you don't kill, it will sell you great items later(and is the reason i had to make an entirely new save T_T). I can't tell more, as it would slip into spoiler territory, but this and the last game in the series(Moonlit Farewell, that btw, has notes in a menu about lore you might be missing out on) are absolutely worth checking out.
CrossCode You play as Lea, a girl who lost her memory, wakes up in an MMO(CrossWorlds) as a rather rare choice of fighter class(spheromancer)among players, who also happens to have her mic broken, so with the help of Sergey(who got you into the game in the first place), you get basic lines as you progress, like your name, greetings, questions and basic answers(so her talking is often just "Hi! Lea! Yes! Lea! Lea!"). There are many regions in the game, most of which you can only access if you acquire a certain elemental extensions to your Circuit tree(these you can get in select dungeons full of puzzles). The combat is really interesting and you get to have fun with elemental modes, but you have to look out as you can get overheated using one mode for too long, so you have to switch frequently. There's also a wiki and plenty of guide videos from the editors of it.
Moon Remix RPG This is an anti-rpg, so it parodies common tropes present in the genre and doesn't take itself seriously. You play as a little boy who, at the beginning, is seen playing some generic RPG about a mighty knight who defeats evil. He is told to go to sleep, but in the middle of the night, the TV mysteriously turns on with static, and takes him in, right to the world of the game he was playing. He is invisible, and only after visiting his...grandma(?) does he get clothing items he is able to be seen in(which looks real reminiscent of Rayman as his arms and legs are not covered by any in-universe item). Your mission is to learn about love, expand your heart, and sleep. Speaking of, as you level up your love, you can stay awake longer and explore more. You can do this in many ways, like quests or finding creatures according to hints in a book. If you "oversleep", it stacks, and you can also recover sleep by eating certain items. Along the way, you also get to observe the knight the boy played as in his game, which reveals that the guy's just a big strong idiot, not giving a single shit about his surroundings and using his fame to not hold responsibility for his actions. One thing I love in this game is the "voice" of characters. You are mute, but everyone else has some sort of 'yap' or 'wobble' or 'eh eh' that vaguely sounds like a voice and they vary a lot. From what i know, the game has only recently been translated to english and released on steam, so you might not find much about it if you're stuck somewhere.

do you like the concept of mmos but you don't like their combat? are guild wars 2, tera, and even black desert online not action gamey enough for you? do you like dmc, bayonetta, and/or kingdom hearts? if you answered yes to any of these questions, then play pso2. it is a free to play mmo with really good combat. like, character action level combat. it comes with both new genesis and classic. classic is a completed mmo and has higher maximum combat speed (luster my beloved) but lower minimum combat speed. it a hub based mmo. new genesis has new graphics and is on a newer engine, is open world, has better balancing between classes, but has much less content and you still kind of have to do your own stuff in it (soloing raid or world bosses, literally just straight up halo forge for player housing, exploring, that kind of thing), but it is getting more combat.
(note for classic, do not touch your mag or your skill tree until you know what you want, go to the phantasy star fleet discord for class guides that will tell you what to do. these need real money to fix if you fuck up. for ngs, you can not fuck up mags and you can reset your skill tree for free, so don't worry there)

So seeing as I really like various MMOs and currently actively play LotRO, I have a Weird Aversion to playing with others in MMOs. I was sort of fine with it in WoW, but I don't enjoy it in LotRO, simply because there's not much wiggle-room in regards to class-roles. Minstrels are not the best DPS, that I admit, but I am also not comfortable as a healer in this game (I am Aware that there are guides - they do not make me more comfortable) and do not currently possess any healer-gear because I've been focused on solo-play, so I tend to avoid group-stuff like the plague.
That being said. I realise that I am, uh... limited.
As in, I really like finishing up deeds and suchlike. And there are deeds that I Cannot Finish because you Need a group. This applies to various dungeon-deeds.
But this also leads to awkward situations where I forget to look up the summaries for dungeons and therefore know no strategies, so I just kind of... wing it while soloing them. And as a max-level red-line minstrel, that's pretty easy. Except, you know, when a boss like, say, the last boss in the Dungeons of Naerband instance has a fucking mechanic along the lines of "the boss will randomly put players in a cell and other players have to pull a lever to open the door and let them out".
Which is to say that I Trial & Error'd my way through the dungeon, finding out fun things (such as Flame Spirits are easy enough to deal with but Flame Wraiths can two- or one-shot me if they pull their Fuck You ability, and Gash-hai Leaders and Ghash-hai Skirmishers are absolute Ass to fight even if they don't have a lot of health because their abilities will End me if I let the fight go on for too long). And full of confidence I approached the final boss and readied myself to fight him and thought I'd be getting the last dang page I needed for the Lost Lore quest in Naerband.
Then he put me in a cell, and the fight was immediately over.

My boyfriend pointed out how funny beating uwu is for me especially. Because titan almost had me quitting the game way back in the day.
See, the me 10 years ago was not good at games, worse than I am now, and I was exceptionally bad at mmos. I played WHM because healing and support has always been my favorite role. And that went more or less okayish until Titan. Lvl 35, four man titan. I could not stay on that platform. Landslides were really finicky and even if I looked like I moved on time, I would end up off the platform. And it wasn't like it is now where maybe the rest of your party could limp through without a healer. When I died, so did they.
And people were mean back then. Like, MEAN. I got told all sorts of unkind things. And I'm pretty socially awkward even online so the minute they started yelling at me I started crying. I realized I was really not cut out for this game or healing and I wasn't sure I wanted to keep playing.
But I actually liked it. I liked the game and the story and I wanted to keep playing. So I restarted. I made a whole new character cause I was embarrassed to show my face on my original character, and I played Monk this time because I figured my only job as DPS was too hit things so no one could get mad at me. And I started watching dungeon guides so I would know what to expect before I even went into a dungeon so I wouldn't die.
And that's how I played the game. It got me through and I didn't get yelled at (as much or as severely anyway). I learned how to actually play classes and git gud.
And now I have refaced titan in an ultimate and won. It's like doing baby me proud 10 years later.

Would you recommend phantasy star online?
no
reasoning beneath the cut if you want it
it's hard to recommend the game because it's very dated (in an interesting way most of the time, but objectively in bad ways as well). the story is extremely hands off and hard to piece together, especially when certain quest plotlines will flat out not resolve if you do something as innocuous as tell someone your name. gameplay-wise i think it's only really compelling if you either really enjoy hunting for rare weapons/items or enjoy the feeling of building a character in an MMO-esque setting.
one of the biggest problems is that there's a limited amount of areas to explore (4 in episode I and 4 in episode II, episode III is a sequel that completely eschews the formula and is a card-game, and i've never played episode IV). most of the plot development and characters to be found will be in episode I, so you're largely going to be treading over the same environments. i personally prefer episode II's levels by a large margin, so it's a shame you can blitz through them with basically no quests or anything to do in them.
all of this is assuming you're playing offline. if you can play online (which would require playing on a fan server) then your experience will likely be a lot more positive. you can get a lot out of the game if you go into it with expectations that it's a 20+ year old "MMO" (the creator disliked that term for it, but it functionally plays similar to one) with dated aspects.
if you are interested in playing it after reading all this, you probably want to play blueburst (the PC version with the most amount of content). i play gamecube which CAN connect online but i've never been able to do it (more because my router is inaccessible than anything else). it also has less content than blueburst but tends to be the version most people talk about when they talk about this game.
also, i wrote a beginner's guide to picking which class you should use because there's 12 to pick from and the game gives you little to work with for which one to go with. i'll link it here <- 3200 word text document

so. contemplating ending my gw2 haitus. i think i've struggled a lot with just trying to make "the Commander character" ever instead of just. having fun and making my own guy! i struggle with just listening to people who say "oh just make whatever you think is cool/fun" but i think now, especially after making a lalafell in ff14 and FINALLY feeling content with my character there, that i'll do the same for gw2 when i pick it up again (which may be sooner or later, who knows)
i've always been too focused making my character "fit in" with the lore and "rules of the world" but i think its time to just.. bridge off from that!
so more rambling below the cut! mainly some more genuine character planning where i just let my mind roam
i think my "main" guy will be an asura. i've always loved the little guys and my first EVER gw2 character when i first played the game was an asura. as much as i like the other races i just feel Right(tm) playing an asura. like you know when you play an mmo and you pick one race and you're like. "oh. yeah this is it. this is my favorite forever"? thats me with asura
plus, i just really like the asura voice actors for both malesura and femsura. they give the asura player character so much charisma
as for profession, the first one i ever played as necromancer, and out of ALL THE OTHER PROFESSIONS in which i have played 2 if not all of their elite specializations... i've never done that with necromancer! i have only ever played reaper on it, so i think i'd like making one just to get a chance to get a taste of scourge and harbinger too.
plus, i generally just like necromancer! out of all the classes aesthetic-wise, necromancer just. takes the take. the minions. the flesh and bone. the sinew. the green and black edginess. THE NECROMANCER SHROUD!! (and plus the shrouds all adapt and change with elite specializations which is so cool). plus with soto NECROMANCER SWORD!!! like if i tried getting all passionate like this over the other professions i wouldnt be able to muster anything as excited sounding as this. i love my necromancers what can i say
(plus the asura voicelines for necromancer are so funny. "up on your.. uh.. feet!" "should've given that one a brain." "i didn't think it'd pop like that!" "this one's kinda cute!")
i will simply let the general energy of the player character guide my main toon's personality, and i'll not stress too hard about the background or whatever and just let the girl exist U_U
(TALKING TO MYSELF) YOU WILL PLAY MMOS FOR FUN. YOU WILL LET YOURSELF HAVE FUN. DO YOU UNDERSTAND

Cherrymochi-developed occult RPG EXIT VEIL to be published by DANGEN Entertainment
Gematsu Source
DANGEN Entertainment will publish Cherrymochi-developed occult RPG EXIT VEIL for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC via Steam, the companies announced. A release date was not announced.
An early development build of EXIT VEIL will be playable at the DANGEN Entertainment and Cherrymochi booths at Tokyo Game Show 2023, which will run from September 21 to 23 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan.
Here is an overview of the game, via DANGEN Entertainment:
EXIT VEIL is an enthralling new occult RPG. Players will embark on a mesmerizing journey through the dark-psychedelic labyrinth of EXIT VEIL as Tori, a lost soul navigating a beautiful yet terrifying world on the brink of decay. Drawn into this realm by a cryptic plea from a long-lost family member, Tori finds herself ensnared in a world where the ethereal and the mundane intertwine—a realm dominated by Archetypes, Egregores, Servitors, Daemons, Angels, and The Machine-Elves. Confronted with a malevolent force of decay lurking deep within the Labyrinthine Realms, players will have the power to guide Tori towards restoring harmony and healing the realms. With the fate of these realms hanging in the balance, players must choose whether Tori will restore harmony or wander lost within the labyrinth forever. At the core of EXIT VEIL lies an innovative and immersive gameplay experience centered around the mystical world of Tarot. As they explore, players will immerse themselves in the uniquely crafted EXIT VEIL tarot deck, unlocking insights that extend beyond the confines of the game and into the realm of self-discovery. This fully integrated tarot card system will guide players as they seek to heal the realms, discover their true selves, and unearth the enigma that lies at the heart of it all. As players collect tarot cards, they’ll engage in tense, turn-based battles reminiscent of MMO healer classes where they are always moments away from oblivion. The EXIT VEIL tarot deck not only powers the player’s in-game abilities but also serves as a bridge to concealed secrets within the game world. A physical EXIT VEIL TAROT deck will also be available, intertwining with the game and providing a portal to hidden mysteries. Developer Cherrymochi commented they plan to infuse EXIT VEIL with elements they adore in JRPGs: intricate, twisting narratives, characters grappling with their inner truths, and strategic turn-based combat.

My Goal then Story part I. UPDATED!
Published:May 26, 2016 on DeviantART
What is my goal?
Quite simply, to become a comic book artist/creator of course. When I was twelve years old, I actually wanted to be an animator. When I found out how animation was created BACK IN THE '80s, I felt it would be better for me to be a comic creator because I didn't need a crew.
The problems I had during the '90s, were no LOCAL art school, no VIDEO GAME classes, and of course, SUNTRUST BANK made it difficult to become an artist.
Then I realized in 2005, I could exact vengeance on Suntrust because the Internet was people-related. This was before the uploading Police's BAD BEHAVIOR became popular. So that was the goal until 2014.
Currently, my goal is now to keep any promises I made (If you have lied to me, had YOUR ALLIES AID in those LIES, or continually left YOUR LIE ONLINE, YOU MUST BE PUNISHED - remember: I STAND for something).
MY Characters If you have ever played an MMO, you know that my designated classes for ACTION stories & the "Project" are Striker(I, II), Tank(I, II), and Support(I, II, III, IV)
Striker I. is the warrior "assault" class specializing in strength. Striker II. is the ranger "mobile" class specializing in agility. (both classes are either Short or Long range)
Tank I. is the OFFENSIVE tank class - specializing in SELFishly producing massive damage(Area Of Effect) while accepting damage. ex. Marvel's Hulk - (ex. berserker) Tank II. is the DEFENSIVE tank class - specializing in UNselfishly taking blows or drawing the enemy away from allies. ex. Marvel's Juggernaut (He is often used incorrectly) or Marvel's Blob (ex. traditional tank)
Support I. is the Mage/Scientist/technician class. Support II. is the Cleric/Healer/Medic class. Support III. is the Rogue/thief/assassin/sniper class. Support IV. is the Paladin/leader/Hybrid class.
These "ROLES" have tiers: Tier 1 would be "human"/Single while PARAGON is the HIGHEST role because the person/chara can change into SEVERAL roles, the ultimate hybrid.
These classes are guided by ONE of the six MINDS: Strong(unwavering), fast(clever), tough(realistic), smart(Nuff-said), dedicated(cause-oriented), and charismatic(Nuff-said).
Magic in my comic. MARVEL's COMICS (90's RPG) is the BEST WAY TO EXPLAIN MAGIC!
I don't care what magic a MOVIE, COMIC, TV SHOW, ANIME, or MAGIC IN REAL LIFE has, it WILL fall under MARVEL's MAGIC SYSTEM which is PERSONAL, UNIVERSAL, and/or DIMENSIONAL! note: At times, mutant powers or Chi/Ki can fall into this description. I studied this subject since '93!
For ME, AD&D school types are the best type for classification despite I altered some of them.
Magic School types are: Enchantment, Elemental, Divination, illusion(trick senses not mental)/mental(charm, stun, mindprobe..etc), Force(pure cohesive magical energies - ex. Eldritch Bolts), transmutation/alteration, conjuration/summoning, Bio/necromancy, Dimensional, Abjuration and Universal which includes wild(uncontrolled), shadow, invocation/evocation(real), Thaumaturgy[alchemy, artifice, geometry]) .
When it comes to powers: I originally designed superpowers based on Marvel's six Soul Gems: Time, Soul, Power, Space, Mind, and Reality. But the Reality Gem wasn't detailed enough. This is when, during the '90s, I had been introduced to White Wolf Publishing thanks to my brothers and our friends.
There are Nine spheres inspired by WHITE WOLF PUBLISHING. Their spheres are Correspondence, Time, Matter, Life, Prime, Spirit, Entropy, Mind & Forces.
I changed White Wolf's explanation of those MAGICAL spheres into POWER SPHERES.
MY NINE SPHERES OF POWER are:
Dimensional (Correspondent space), Time, Matter, Soul, Forces, Mind, Bio, and two MAJOR SPHERES: PURE POWER and FATE!
DIMENSIONAL SPHERE: Teleportation, Dimensional gates, Dimension Shifting, dimension creation, Spatial Manipulation, trouble seek(warp), and Insubstantiality(Power sphere).
MATTER SPHERE: alteration of the matter: state of matter(solid, liquid & gas) - transmutation(atomic), Solidification, Size Manipulation, Creation, Duplication, Weight Manipulation, Disintegration, and Animation.
SOUL SPHERE: the creation of a spirit, the resurrection of the spirit, death of the spirit, wraiths, elemental(false spirit), spiritual placement(body/object possession/containment), Spiritual mediumship, and astral form.
FORCES SPHERE: Weather Control, elements(fire/water/air/earth) Gravity, magnetic, Radiation powers, barrier Generation, Light/dark/color Manipulation, visual illusions, Ionization, Energy Solidification, Explosive Power, sound generation, environment control (power sphere), ionikinesis, "kinetic" abilities and other electromagnetic spectrum abilities.
MIND SPHERE: telepathic read/probe, psy-blasts, telekinetic(Forces sphere), mind control, mental illusions, animal/insect/arachnid control, emotion control, advanced empathy, Intuitive aptitude, Immense Intelligence(Ultimate Skill), Hypercognition, dream control...other mental powers.
BIO(LIFE) SPHERE: body resurrection(Soul accepted), reincarnation(Soul accepted), BODY control, regeneration, healing-others, poison-healing or creation, death manipulation, biological immortality, elongation, zombie control, Merging, Connective Tissue Manipulation, clinging, immobilization, Animal Transformation, Digestive Adaptation, Anatomical Separation, Sleep Manipulation, natural(Dermal Armor, strength, species ability), Pestilence Manipulation, bio-conversion, Birth Alteration/Control, size manipulation(matter sphere), gerontokinesis and other Biological Manipulation abilities.
TIME SPHERE: time travel, Duplication (temporal), Chrono-Paradox manipulation(ex.Grandfather's Paradox), nexus creation(dimensional sphere), Precognition/Psychometry(Pure Power), Temporal Control/Stasis and Time-sense(iincluding Power sphere: Precognition, Retrocognition).
The twins' Ultimate of the nine are:
PURE POWER SPHERE: Superpower Manipulation(affinity/aversion and Bestowal/Nullification powers), Power Generation, Conversion power(total), probability control, divination powers(Precognition, Psychometry, Danger-Intuition, Clairvoyance, Clairaudience, Power sensing, and other related powers) "True flight", absorption, Residual Absorption, Power Replication, Nemesis(power), Paradox Inducement, hyperspeed, homing effect, Reflection Manipulation(Ricochet Attack), hyperleaping, essokinesis (including wishes), Invulnerability, superstrength, resistances, Intangibility, Magic(normal), chi or Ki (normal) & cosmokinesis. Pure power is NEUTRAL! FATE SPHERE: Power Manifestation, Posikinesis/Negikinesis(ex. The Force/The Dark side), Good/Bad magic, order/chaos control, bad/good luck, Yin/Yang, evil/good detection. Both "Pure Power" and "The Fate" spheres need the other spheres to work. Fate & Pure Power have the SAME powers the difference between the two spheres is the fact: "Fate" has opposing forces(Good & Evil). Fate has divination which ONLY works when detecting: the "energy" of good/order or evil/chaos (In Star Wars - Darth Vader couldn't find where the Rebels were hiding but Vader could detect Luke Skywalker). Please remember that "FATE" is the struggle between good/order and evil/chaos! All of these powers have weaknesses. Example: Essokinesis'/Tychokinesis' weakness can be the Equivalent Exchange("In order to obtain or create something, something of equal value must be lost or destroyed). The powers listed: https://powerlisting.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Browse
https://www.classicmarvelforever.com/cms/ultimate-powers-list.html and
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superpower_(ability) will fit in my spheres.

Dungeon Corrective Tank Guide
Dungeon Corrector Representatives of the classic MMORPG player archetypes in the class system. The tank class represents the archetype of the defense player, aimed at the same name in Old MMOs, a focused player aimed at getting hit. High protection is as excellent as a party to the party, which is far from more fragile classes. This is what you need to know about tanks at Dungeon…
