I wanted to give myself a couple of months away from writing before Nanowrimo starts up, and so I came up with some other stuff for me to do in the meantime. I read some comics and played a video game, and what could go wrong with that?

Well, as it turns out, the Golden Age run of Captain America sucks ass, and Mega Man X5 also sucks ass. So I'm starting to question my choices for leisure activities.

What also sucks is that I'm planning to tackle Mega Man X6 and X7 next, and those are supposed to be much, much worse. I mean, I wanted to check those out to see for myself just how terrible they are, since they're legendarily bad games. But X5 was supposed to be a so-so entry in the series, and yeesh.

I really think Mega Man X fans have a distorted view of the series, or they're just operating on a different level from me. X1 is widely regarded as a classic, and I've never been too fond of it. But there's a noticeable drop in quality in the sequels, and it's gotten me thinking back on X1 like maybe I didn't appreciate it enough. So maybe the truth is that X1 was always mid and MMX fans have just convinced themselves it's an awesome game because the sequels are so much worse by comparison.

Like, the general consensus seems to be that X1 is great, X4 is really good, and then X2, 3, 5, and 8 are okay, and then X6 and 7 are just a trainwreck. The exact order of the ranking may vary, but that's about how it goes. And I agree, except I find all of them overrated. When I play one of these things, I always find myself wishing I was playing one of the NES Mega Man games instead.

Anyway, none of that has much to do with this blog, except that it's part of the reason why I never got around to wrapping up the 2023 DB Apocrypha Liveblog. All I've got left to cover is the DBS manga adaptation of the Super Hero movie, except it's still ongoing. I was sure it would be wrapping up with Chapter 97, but no dice.

So I decided to wait and see, but honestly, I'm getting kind of fed up with waiting, so I may just go ahead work my way up to Chapter 98, regardless of whether the arc is finished. If it goes on into Chapter 99, then that's too bad. I don't want to have to fool with it in November.

So I guess I'd better start setting up for that, since Chapter 98 should only be a couple of weeks away. It'll give me something to take my mind off of the awful video games I'm subjecting myself to.

Mega Man X2 (SNES)

First Time?: No

I recently replayed MMX2 for the first time since like, 2011? It's still really good and holds up super well. I think it's a shame that this game doesn't seem to get quite as much love as the first game since I think it's at least just as good and probably even better.

Like the music is particularly something I love about the game. While the first game's music feels like it fits in a little better with classic Mega Man, X2's soundtrack feels a lot more energetic and experimental, doing a lot of interesting stuff with time signatures and generally weird rhythms. Even the more "normal" sounding songs have a sort of prog metal quality that I really love, and it's something they haven't ever really done again with the X series.

I also felt like this game takes the concept of "weapons interacting with their environment in different ways" from the first game and does so much more with it. A really good example is the weather controllers in Wire Sponge's stage changing the weather in the stage to different things depending on which weapon you hit it with (something that Cloud Man's stage in Mega Man 7 also lets you do...).

My main criticism, if you could call it that, is how hard it is to get some of the collectibles. Some of them are brutal, the heart tank in Crystal Snail's stage being a notable example. These are all optional of course, so it's fair to make them as difficult as you want, it just feels like you have to dump at least a few lives into trying to get some of these things before you even understand what you need to do to get them (if you even have the ability to do so yet), so it can be a little frustrating in that sense.

Overall, a great game. If you liked the first MMX game and you haven't played this, it's absolutely worth it.

As with all other sets in this series, the MMX Resource Saver Shaders Collection 7 is designed to help reduce the overall resource use of textures within your scene, but this time the focus is clothing. i've started a little series of weekly posts documenting every MoC i made (digitally) over the last few years:

Week 7: the rest of 2020

ideas contests, my new room, the return of the robot dog, some wishful thinking and some new emissive materials

LEGO Ideas had an activity where you took photos of minifigures interacting with real life objects. this was the photo i took. i like it a lot and used it for a very long time as my background for my phone because i was so proud of it.

i reorganized my room and decided to update the MoC i made of it. once again, posting this on reddit resulted in a lot of comments regarding the small size of my room. :/

is it obvious that i was obsessed with boston dynamic's spot and adam savage for a hot minute? i hope these costumes inspired by some of the casings adam savage made for his borrowed spot are the last we'll see...

LEGO Ideas also had a contest about music and music videos. my entry was the MMX by Martin Molin aka Wintergatan, a music playing machine that was supposed to be an updated version of the Marble Machine, a machine he built by himself back in 2016, that was actually engineered and not basically improvised. he didn't finish it and is currently starting a similar project from scratch.

i actually made that MoC of of the original Marble machine back in 2017 (i think), when i first saw the video, but the file is just.... gone. the only reason i even remembered this MoC is because i recently found the contest entry on my Ideas profile when i was looking something up. (the same goes for the activity entry i posted further up). I also had to take the image i uploaded to Ideas for this entry, because the render is also just.... gone.

season 2 of the mandalorian had recently released and there where some rumores floating around that we would be getting a set based on episode 1 (later revealed to be 75299 - trouble on tatooine)

some wishful thinking the lead me to making this MoC, something actually based on an interesting scene instead of just a bad built of a Ghorfa tent.

Stud.io made a new addition to their rendering allowing actual emissive materials intead of the kinda hacky thing i've been using with that orange material i had been using that far. this is just a build where i tested them (and how the eyesight renderer handled them).

also, yes, this would be out of chronological order because i've been using those new emissive materials in the hover cars from last week. but a limit of 30 images means i have to kind of choose what to put where and i mostly put them in an order that feels right.

anyway, next week is going to be 2021, my last productive year.

MMX Code: Crimpphire World Building Part 2 - Abel City

I'll finally be able to talk about the other city that was the start of the main focus, but it waned after it was nuked by Sigma. Abel City. If you wanna see the one on Mega City, you can see it here

NEW CHAPTER ON AO3

Now I was thinking it could be Arcadia, since that took place in the Archie Comics, but I have been planning since 2019 for it to be Abel City, since that was implemented in the Day of Sigma OVA. And that’s going to be included in the AU, so checks out~.

Without further ado- let’s get on with what Abel City would be like for the AU~.

First, we look at the “Mysterious Gloree” Woods Preservation Center!! There are places in the country of Glockthain that preserve many woods in 21XX, and Abel city is one of them. Unfortunately, it gets damaged in the missile attack Sigma launched onto the city

Then we have The Answer Bar and Club!! It’s a place Zero liked to go with his unit after a good job well done. He hardly ever saw the point in going to a bar, but he liked having fun. He found more of a reason to go when X started acing his ranks and going up, and being at Rank B by the time Day of Sigma Arc rolled around

Shushiko restaurant is next, and of course of the name, it’s a sushi restaurant~. It’s a conveyor belt restaurant too~. X and Zero like going there every once in a while, again before the missile attack hit Abel City

And then we have Arthur Cain Park. A park dedicated to our loveable Dr Cain. And yes, his first name is Arthur in this AU, which I felt fit~. Maybe I can make a separate headcanon to explain my thought process about it, if you guys would like~

And if we can direct your attention to another place called “Pockets of Time Antiques”. A store Xev went to with Dr Cain before he became a hunter. Since X was very interested in old things from the past, Cain decided to indulge him more into that, and music boxes caught his interest more than anything else in the world. They still made them in his time, but they weren’t made as much as they were back in the 19th and 20th centuries. The 21st still had music boxes, but they aren’t made with much care as they were back in those days.

Going into Maverick Hunter territory, Abel City Maverick Hunter HQ and its Base Landing Pad were quite a building. Of course, you’ve seen it in the OVA, it’s towering high in over 30 stories and sporting the Maverick Hunter logo up at the top. And it has a flat top as well for helicopters and Hunters that fly, like Storm Eagle to land onto. Of course, they have to be authorized to land on HQ but they are allowed to land as such with that in mind

And then there are the three schools located around Abel City. The Elementary School of Trinity, holding Grades k-6, Eagle Mountain Junior High School, housing grades 7-9, and Frozen Promise High School, housing grades 10-12. Not to mention there’s a community college and university combo building called Holy Cypress.

Now to address if there’s a holding facility with the HQ. Which there is, except it’s a death row facility called Nightmare Max Security Penitentiary. It’s something taking place where termination of Mavericks were the only option at the time before Abel City was nuked with missiles. Later on in the story, it’s more considered to give Mavericks another chance other than termination thanks to, of course, X.

Lastly, we have the Gentle Oak Memorial Park. There, they held many fallen bystanders and Hunters in very gruesome Maverick attacks, and there is a program that helps pay respects to those who’ve fallen. Idk what they would be called but I’m sure there would be at least a significant name for their efforts to be remembered.

And that should be it for Abel City~! I’ll hopefully post more world building as I post the fic series~.
