The Story of Minglan
Oh, Minglan.
Tumblr media
This is what happens when you take the attitude of "It's no big deal if my husband sleeps with morally questionable other women." 🙄
I am fully on his side on this issue but I feel like hasn't done a good enough job of expressing just how disgusting he personally finds these concubines that everyone keeps trying to force on him. Minglan has been brainwashed by the patriarchy and it will take her a while to find her ground and feel secure enough to put her foot down, but what is stopping him from advocating for himself?
My guy, just say NO.
***
LMAO, he's the ruthless and stupid one?
Tumblr media
Chang'er's death is his fault? I cannot with this evil narcissist.
***
Fuck you.
Tumblr media
Maybe if your garbage ass had not kidnapped him, he wouldn't have gotten sick. And if he had, they would have been able to afford a doctor.
***
I hope he really rips her limb from limb.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The more I see of her and of Lin Qinshuang, the more valid I find Mo Ran for deep-frying fucking Song Qiutong.
***
Unfortunately, Minglan talked him out of torturing her to death 😕
***
LOL, let's hope that at least the piece of shit maternal uncle gets tortured.
Tumblr media
***
Please tell me we will get to see a beheading 😭
Tumblr media
I am so sick and tired of these people. They have been trying to murder Gu Tingye for fifty episodes now. I am so done 😭😭
***
I love it when cats make guest appearances in dramas 💙
Tumblr media
***
Hell person.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
***
In general, I am not pleased with how this story has handled Manniang and her children. It all seems sanitised and on easy mode for Minglan because the true circumstances of him having this whole family before marrying her diminishes the romance as it is and making it any more realistic would probably have snapped a lot of people out of rooting for the main couple because they could no longer idealise it.
I mean, look at this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If this show was realistic, the odds are that Rong-jie, with a vindictive, abusive, neglectful biological mother who abandoned her like this, would have taken all that trauma out on Minglan because this is how kids tend to react in such situations. She would have given her stepmother hell because she was there and a convenient target, while the narcissistic, toxic, neglectful bio mother was not.
Also, killing Chang-er is the writers taking the easy way out because now they have eliminated Gu Tingye's eldest son and possible heir from competing with Minglan's children for the title and the wealth. It's such a cop-out. With Chang-er in the picture, the only way Minglan's children could inherit would be if Gu Tingye refused to acknowledge him as a son, which would absolutely destroy his image and tank the character in the eyes of the viewers.
This way, Minlgan's children get all the benefits without her having to fight for them at the detriment of Tingye's older children and Tingye gets to preserve his image of a doting and responsible father, putting all the negative connotations of his irresponsible first common-law marriage onto the evil Manniang. Gu Tingye and Minglan maintain their noble images and Manniang is scapegoated to enable this. It just leaves me feeling a lot of ick.
It may be unfair of me, but I respect the writing on this show a whole lot less because of these decisions. The truth is, overall, this drama is better written than 99% of other dramas so I feel extremely weird getting hung up on this and letting it get so magnified in my head, but I feel like the fact that the rest of this drama is so realistic and well-written works against them here. There are standards here that were set and I am expecting the rest of the story to proceed on that level, but these standards are no longer being met because meeting them implies compromising the untarnished image of the main characters. It is so convenient and such an obvious cop-out, that I genuinely feel swindled and somewhat salty about it.
***
So selfish and so fucking evil.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What did Rong-jie ever do to her?
She is the one who abandoned her, she's the one who took the boy out and caused his death. She will just blame anyone except herself for her shit selfish decisions.
***
WTF.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rong-jie is going to need so much therapy, which is unfortunately not a thing in Song Dynasty China.
***
Fucking finally, some good decisions.
Tumblr media
***
Oh, yeah, Xiaotao and Shito are definitely a thing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
***
So gorgeous 🧡
Tumblr media
Definitely a potential reference pic.
***
She is the poster child for an untreated personality disorder.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm so glad I live in the XXI century where mental health care is available, not that it prevents a whole lot of people from still acting like this and blowing up entire lives.
***
Don't you worry, evildoer, your comeuppance is also coming!

What makes a good boot sequence?
A while ago, I had my first truly viral post on Mastodon. It was this:
Tumblr media
You might've seen it. It got almost four hundred boosts and reached beyond Mastodon to reddit and even 4chan. I even saw an edit with a spinning frog on the left screen. I knew the post would go down well with tech.lgbt but I never expected it to blow up the way it did.
I tried my best to express succinctly exactly what it is I miss about BIOS motherboards in the age of UEFI in this picture. I think looking at a logo and spinner/loading bar is boring compared to seeing a bunch of status messages scroll up the screen indicating hardware being activated, services being started up and tasks being run. It takes the soul out of a computer when it hides its computeriness.
I think a lot of people misunderstood my post as expressing a practical preference over an aesthetic one, and there was at least a few thinking this was a Linux fanboy post, which it certainly is not. So here's the long version of a meme I made lol.
Stages
I remember using two family desktop computers before moving over a family laptop. One ran Windows XP and the other ran Windows 7. Both were of the BIOS era, which meant that when booting, they displayed some status information in white on black with a blinking cursor before loading the operating system. On the XP machine, I spent longer in this liminal space because it dual-booted. I needed to select Windows XP from a list of Linux distros when booting it.
I've always liked this. Even as a very little kid I had some sense that what I was seeing was a look back into the history of computing. It felt like a look "behind the scenes" of the main GUI-based operating system into something more primitive. This made computers even more interesting than they already were, to me.
Sequences
The way old computers booted was appealing to my love of all kinds of fixed, repeating sequences. I never skip the intros to TV shows and I get annoyed when my local cinema forgets to show the BBFC ratings card immediately before the film, even though doing so is totally pointless and it's kinda strange that they do that in the first place. Can you tell I'm autistic?
Booting the windows 7 computer would involve this sequence of distinct stages: BIOS white text -> Windows 7 logo with "starting windows" below in the wrong aspect ratio -> switch to correct resolution with loading spinner on the screen -> login screen.
Skipping any would feel wrong to me because it's missing a step in one of those fixed sequences I love so much. And every computer that doesn't start with BIOS diagnostic messages is sadly missing that step to my brain, and feels off.
Low-level magic
I am extremely curious about how things work and always have been, so little reminders when using a computer that it has all sorts of complex inner workings and background processes going on are very interesting to me, so I prefer boot sequences that expose the low-level magic going on and build up to the GUI. Starting in the GUI immediately presents it as fundamental, as if it's not just a pile of abstractions on top of one another. It feels deceptive.
There may actually be some educational and practical value in computers booting in verbose mode by default. Kids using computers for the first time get to see that there's a lot more to their computer than the parts they interact with (sparking curiosity!), and if a boot fails, technicians are better able to diagnose the problem over a phone call with a non-technical person.
Absolute boot sequence perfection
There's still one last thing missing from my family computer's boot sequence, and that's a brief flicker of garbage on screen as VRAM is cleared out. Can't have everything I guess. Slo-mo example from The 8-Bit Guy here:

Hi!! (It’s me, mo) I have questions about Brian manages (sole direction)!!!
How much research did you do for it? (And if you did, do you always put research into fics? And how do you gauge how much research you need for a fic?)
Also you kinda touched on it for the fic but do you have any like headcanon for how the Beatles and Brian carry on career-wise after the fic?
Thank you for asking! <3 The biggest part of the 'research' I did for that story consisted of organizing things I had already read or picked up, and revisit some of them and put them in order. The idea of starting to 'resarch' from scratch is daunting to me!
This got kind of long (no surprise), so the rest is under the cut.
With Brian Manages being a 'Brian lives' scenario, I was lucky that both the Hunter Davies bio and Bob Spitz's bio have a lot of information about the end days ('67), including gruesome play-by-play accounts of Brian's death. I re-read those, supplemented by Anthology. I also happened to read Tune In at the time—the chapters about Mr. Epstein's arrival in the Beatles' life. Say about him what you will, but Lewisohn does a great job describing all the things Brian did for them in Year 1, painting him as nothing less than heroic, and the Beatles-Epstein union as a love match on both sides.
Seeing the contrast between '62 Brian and '67 Brian (Five. Fucking. Years) was very helpful. As was the updated Hunter Davies intro where he said Brian was ready to 'come out' in the original Beatles bio.
All of this was great scaffolding for the story. But it wasn't so much the result of research as the result of re-ordering and revisiting familiar things, and putting them in service of the story.
I did have to 'research' the idea behind Apple, and Brian's part in that (thanks, Wikipedia), and I read various online forum discussions and articles asking the question "What would have happened if Brian had lived." Opinions ran the gamut from "he was a disaster and they would have fired him" to "if he had lived, the Beatles would be alive and together today," which was...liberating. I did get some sense of the business aspect of it all.
In addition, my research was really just being attuned to Brian, and hoovering up everything that came my way and felt relevant, without treating it like work. For instance, AKOM interviewed Vivek Tiwary, author of the graphic novel The Fifth Beatle, while I was writing the story. His Brian is an artist, a lover of art, and this is his promise to the boys (quoted in the show, thankfully, because I did not have the book then; I do now, it's gorgeous): Don't worry about the business. Play your instruments and I will play the business as my instrument. Only you'll never have to hear it. Come onnnn. That quote drives my story like that spinning thing in the hidden chamber of Inception.
Or that quote from the Mal Evans biography, where Mal dreams of Brian after his death, and pleads with him to help them and tell them what to do?
Maybe you're familiar with this—that, if you're writing something, you keep finding things that seem to fit and feed into it, like a bower bird decorating his love nest? In books, The Tumblr, conversations, the news...?
Do I always do research? Not necessarily, but I like to start with a real event, or something solid, like a picture or a quote or, at least, an item.
How do I gauge how much research I need? When I have an outline to the story that feels solid, it means I did enough research—for now.
My headcanon for how Brian and the Beatles carry on career-wise after the fic?
Brian—is the man, the king, the legend. Manages the Beatles and plays Apple as his instrument. Will not live celibate, but apply strict quality control when it comes to companionship. Maintains a possible [undefined] firm friendship-with-benefits arrangement with the sharer of his humor and his staunch defender, Mr. Nat Weiss. Continues to manage Saville Theatre, regularly visits Barcelona, writes the next volume of his autobiography, handles John and Paul's very delicate living-apart-together negotiations (it's better this way), but draws firm boundaries when one of them, in a weak moment, tries to play him against the other. Will gently roast them in his speech when they receive yet another songwriting lifetime achievement award. Eventually indulges in his dream to act on stage as part of a Shakespeare production, but realizes that, like Paul McCartney couldn't become a regular band member with Wings in our reality, Brian Epstein will never be part of the cast, no matter what he does. He does not turn up to accept awards, but he will be miffed if he's not nominated. Still alive and healthy today. Goes boating with John and horse riding with Paul. Witnesses their top-secret, shipper-pleasing commitment ceremony in Paul's geodesic dome. *g*
The Beatles: Remain a band, with space for each of them to do his own thing. Paul stages a life performance of some sort at Saville Theatre. The Hendrix/Davis/McCartney jam session happens here, and it's GOOD. Special guest: Yoko Ono. [I'm picking up ideas that the idea of Yoko collaborating with the Beatles, or some of them, musically, might not have been a bad idea? Not sure yet.] Anyway, John writes a play, and then another, and eventually a movie script. Paul writes solo music. They find each other again, they jam, it works, it goes on. George will only agree to participate in another Beatles record if it pleases him. That means Paul has to grovel, which he does. At times, the Beatles will be passé, at other times, they will rise from the ashes. They will become an institution, and they'll carry that weight with grace and inscrutable humor. They will never perform their mop top hits life. Perhaps they will never tour again as Beatles, and that just has to be fine. Actually, in many ways, my Beatles headcanon follows the ending of zilabee's Kissing the Blarney!
Sorry this got long; I hope you found some amusement here!

Hi new Tumblr followers.
Some of you may have found me via the random poll that went viral. This is largely a fandom-related blog with occasional posts about life, the universe, and everything. Sometimes social or political issues.
If you didn’t notice from my Tumblr bio thingie, I’m 39yo enbie queer, have been writing fanfiction since the late 90s, was a professor until December when I quit due to department toxicity and burnout, and I advocate on queer rights/issues/history, disability, anti-racism, anti-capitalist, etc. issues. I’ve previously been involved in protests, particularly when I was more able-bodied. I am a published poet, recently was involved in developing an academic textbook involving the Holocaust, and am generally active in literary communities beyond fandom. I warn you, I also like to randomly quote Hamlet at inappropriate moments.
Fandom-wise, I’ve written mostly for Yu Yu Hakusho, Slayers, Pandora Hearts, Miraculous Ladybug, Mo Dao Zu Shi/The Untamed and a smattering of other fandoms. I mostly write in the MDZS/Untamed fandom now. I used to participate in Kinkmemes on LiveJournal, including helping to run a small one for the Slayers fandom. In the 2000s I ran a small Yu Yu Hakusho fanfiction contest. I helped judge several other contests, as well. I used to RP a lot, as well. I often beta read for friends, though I don’t do it on any large scale as I don’t want to.
I don’t tend to share my IRL info based on a prior fandom’s wannabe-BNF creeper’s henchpeople threatening to dox me. Not that it matters since I’m currently unemployed by choice and necessity.
I like Tumblr as a throwback to the relative intimacy of blogging in Internet 1.0, where even in anonymity there’s more connection than through modern social media, which seems largely comprised of screaming into the void with the dubious pleasure of going viral as the only goal and “reward.” In other words, I’m internet old and crotchety.
I previously went “viral” when I posted about murmurings that Fanfiction.Net might go away, and wound up deleting that post because the notifs were driving me crazy. I also had a random post about a class get featured on a FB group, and was accused of being racist toward white people for simply using the word “colonialism.” As in “English was spread to many places via colonialism and thus has many dialects, none of them more valid than any other.”
The only saving grace to this poll going viral is the fact that it’ll be over in a few more days. I’m not really sure what about this poll tickled so many people into sharing, but from many of the tags it seems to be the fact that it brought up childhood memories and nostalgia for a lot of people. Likely the fact that it was done without the capitalist push to buy something added to the appeal.
Anyhoo, welcome.

8:03 P.M.
Seth now in their home sitting in the desk studying and examining the biomass that have seem to began to act odd. It's moving, vibrating a bit but doesn't seem into trying to break out of the jar where they contained it. Cautiously opening the jar while taking a blood sample using a small syringe placing said sample into the microscope. Staring in the scope finally meeting face to face with the T-virus in all it's glory. Stated by them the virus had mutated into new strains that are airborne and bloodborne. What's more fascinating is that the blood cells from the bio mass are dead. Yet the virus mutated the host's body and blood to become this horrid bio mass that spreads the virus further into area. Not only turning the villagers into the undead but also have the B.O.W.s. evolved into much more powerful monstrosity. Upon staring and research, they see that the virus begun mutating thus the hosts somewhere is mutating as they speak.
Tumblr media
Fascinated with what have happen Seth had decided to write down in their notes and all there is left is giving the virus a new name that is a long category of other strains of the T-virus from pasts bioterrorists attacks and such. They grabbed a tape recorder from the side and started recording themselves.
" Audio log number 7 I have obtain a blood sample from the biomass I discovered on my way to research. And I found such interesting yet disastrous results the host's own cells have been dead, what seemed to be a hundred years, yet it has claim them. What I gathered from rumors of Erebus. I have decided to call the virus by definition as T-Erebus. What I gathered the name erebus is an old greek name after the primordial god of darkness and it is very intriguing. So far in my miserable life, I'm making good progress, I need mo- "

In a flash the entire jar next to them began to shake immediately as the bio mass now appearing to, producing?! They stopped the voice recording and immediately ran into the other room to grab something for the bio mass which it shattered the entire glass as something is emerging out of the flesh. A small human hand popped out as it emerge from said bio mass. They finally came back with a handgun and a couple of incendiary grenades to combat the flesh from growing and expanding their home but what they see is the flesh out of the jar didn't grow instead, they saw small little blood prints on the table and into floor. Carefully they move into the room with side arm in their hands as they notice something moving under their desk. They slowly turned on the flashlight and cautiously looked under the table only to discover the most shocking thing that had emerged from the bio mass, what they saw was...a small child-like Hsien-Ko peak out from under the table fully developed at such a small form.
" HI HI~! "

Tumblr media
Yeahh, this isn't what Seth had expected in their research. Nonetheless this begins the next scientific breakthrough of a life time as the synthetic have discovered that the host Hsien-Ko has the ability of cell division.

Sunday
My parents, Ran, Roxanne, and I went to Good Taste just to eat out. We then came home.
Monday
Mansoor arrived from his family trip. He assisted with my enrollment. Myla and I had lunch and enrolled together. Along the hallway, I saw Sir Apollo passing by. Myla greeted him, and we stole glances. I received a text from him inviting me to a certain room. We were done, and Myla wanted to hang out more, but I didn't want to join. I followed the directions to what seemed to be a stock room below the engineering classrooms.
Upon entering, I was met with fervent kissing.
"Sir, we're at school," I said, worried.
"Nobody can see us," he assured me, and that kind of turned me on. I kissed him back, our bodies pressing against each other, feeling the heat.
It was just a few minutes of passionate kissing.
"Let's meet again tomorrow. Let's go on a date," he said. I just nodded.
"You're so pretty," he said before his lips locked onto mine again. I left first, then him.
Mom and I went out that night to buy books and things. She shopped for clothes for me, especially sweaters. I loved the new selection.
We had dinner at the Azotea Greens café. She loved it.
I got new titles to read: Murakami's "Billowing Women," Ransom Riggs' "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children," and a book by Dan Brown.
By the way, I saw my grades:
Psych 108: 93
Psych 109: 96
CompSci 1: 93
Philo 1: 95
Econ 1: 93
Hist 22: 95
Bio 9: 93
Engl 7: 94
I enrolled in these subjects:
MWF
Physics 1: 7:30-11:45
Humanities 1: 2:35-4:00
Psych 110: Psychological Assessment: 4:00-8:10
TTHS
Social Science: Society and Family Planning: 11:45-1:10
Psych 111: Social Psychology: 1:10-2:35
Chem 103: Biological Chemistry: 4:00-8:10
Mansoor will be my classmate only in Psych Assessment.
Tuesday
I received two morning texts:
From Mansoor: Good morning, baby. :)) From Sir Apollo: Good morning. Sorry, but let's cancel today. Tomorrow instead.
In the afternoon, I was walking down Session Road with Hollmae after buying new headphones. I bumped into Apollo. We stopped, and I saw he had a young child with him, probably 3 to 5 years old. He just stared at me, and Hollmae and I crossed the street to avoid him.
The kid looked just like him. We were supposed to meet today.
I decided to search for more information about him. There wasn't much, but I found another account he was frequently tagged on. As I dug deeper, I found a photo of him last year hugging three children, tagged by a woman sharing his last name.
At the city library, I found a master's dissertation he published. In the acknowledgments, there was a note: "The researcher would like to thank his wife and their two kids."
My heart was about to explode. I was so angry. But I had cheated too. We were just the same scum.
I felt a bit relieved. The relationship hadn't gone deeper. I went out with Mansoor instead, tagging along with his friends at a pizza house.
Sir Apollo kept texting me. I told him that I couldn't see him anymore.
He called, asking to meet. I said no.
"This was a mistake," I said.
"Yung nakita mo kanina, anak ko siya. I'm already married," he confessed.
I scoffed, "Of course you are."
"Pero hindi kami okay ng asawa ko. Ikaw ang gusto ko," he said over the line, pleading for us not to stop.
"I have a boyfriend, actually. I was planning to tell you."
"I know, and I didn't care," he breathed over the line.
"Let's just end this. I thought I wanted you, but I was wrong."
I ended the call and broke my SIM card. I cried a bit. I'm such a foolish girl.
I practiced my violin instead and asked Paolo about gym recommendations.
I also searched for Spanish tutors online and joined a one-on-one Spanish class. It'll be twice a week in the mornings on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I'll go to the gym on Saturdays and Sundays. I won't do Aikido for now.
I think I'm going to tire myself out. It felt like a bad heartbreak while still being in a relationship. I blocked Apollo's account and freely uploaded my photos with Mansoor.
Wednesday
I told my mom I had a boyfriend, but it's not so serious. They want to meet him, but I said it's still too early. I told Mom not to worry, but she really wanted to meet him.
I walked into a gym where Paolo was, and he trained me a bit. My goal was to make myself leaner.
I learned fitness tips from him.
Dad told me to learn driving every Sunday, so he contacted Manong Marvin to teach me.
"Are you buying me a car?" I asked.
"Yes. It's supposed to be your graduation gift, but maybe now is better." I was spinning in excitement.
Thursday
My brother-in-law, Marvin, was at the house. He got me started by showing me the car parts, explaining the difference between manual and automatic, and what to check. He was like a real teacher, very serious, so I had to buckle up.
I met up with Mansoor, and we went to the cinema to watch an American movie.
Friday
In the morning, after my jog, I continued driving lessons. Marvin taught me how to read the gas meter, start the car, and then we moved it. It was exhilarating.
We spent the whole day at an empty park in Tuba.
It was tiring.
Saturday
Another full day of learning to drive. I practiced driving straight and, since I was getting the hang of it, my brother taught me how to turn. It was slow but gentle.
Sunday
More practice again. He said I need to have theoretical driving lessons. I agreed to do that after this term.
So, we will meet every Sunday afternoon until I get it right.

Hello !
I was wondering whether you could rate and tell us of your top 5 favourite webnovels/cnovels of all time ?! (Sorry if this has already been answered lol😅)
Thank you, stay safe and have a nice day🖤
Awww, thank you and that is such a lovely ask!!!
From n1 to n5, here they are (they happen to be all danmei.)
1. The Husky and His White Cat Shizun (2ha) - my n1 forever and ever.
Taxian Jun, the horrific cultivation emperor of the world who razed cities and destroyed sects, is surrounded on his mountain. The righteous sects are terrified to confront him but tired of living, Taxian Jun consumes poison and dies by suicide at the age of 32. And opens his eyes as 16 year old Mo Ran, Mo Ran long before he became Taxian Jun, Mo Ran who is excited at a chance to save the one person he loved and lost. Oh, and to deal with his loathed shizun, the unapproachable and strict Chu Wanning, his past life’s biggest enemy.
I have no idea if it’s objectively the best on this list but it hits every trope I love, its bleak worldview (the world will change only incrementally but that’s enough, average person will not appreciate the sacrifice but it’s still worthwhile, and love is worth everything) mirrors mine, and the sheer complexity of the plot and cascade of plot twists each of which is insane and yet completely logical, is amazing (this is a rare novel where it’s even more fun to reread than read for the first time because you keep seeing all the hints and trail crumbs laid out that you did not see the first time.)
And the characters!!! I mean, this novel has multiple universes/timelines, a side trip to the Underworld AND the demon realm, a plot more twisted than a store’s worth of pretzels and yet the thing that hits me the most are the characters. Mo Ran is my favorite web novel character of all time and I love Chu Wanning so. All the secondary characters are wonderfully written (and some of them made me bawl) and they are all complex. My opinion of all of them changed many times over; the novel doesn’t make it easy to love some of them but then you do and it’s so worthwhile! That slow change is one of the delights of the novel - I started out disliking the unpleasant, superior Chu Wanning and cruel, callow Mo Ran and then I loved them so so hard and cried for them so so hard and was in awe of their heroism and sacrifice and selflessness and capacity to love.
Oh, and the fact that this novel does something almost impossible - it has its protagonist start out as so clearly irredeemable and then slowly and painfully and thoroughly redeems him (without ever letting the reader forget what it is he needs redemption for.)
Also, for a novel that made me cry so hard I felt ill, this book is just so damn funny with the most sarcastic sense of humor imaginable (the serious angst doesn’t even kick in until 90+ chapters!)
Anyway I should stop or I will write a dissertation. But this is the one web novel that I would put in my top 5 not just web novels but any novels in any shape or form. The plentiful trigger warnings are there for a reason so stay away if they are an issue, but if not, if anyone hasn’t read it yet, what are you doing with your life?!
2. Stains of Filth (Yuwu) - another novel by the author of 2ha. Clearly she just pushes all my buttons every time. This one is much shorter and has a plot that is twisty but less twisty than 2ha. Still, all that means is that intensity and the pain are more concentrated.
Aristocratic Mo Xi and former slave Gu Mang were both legendary generals of the empire and lovers. But Gu Mang betrayed the country and switched to the enemy. Now he is back as a peace offering by that country and Mo Xi has to deal with the fact that his feelings are as strong as ever.
This novel!!! So much pain and intensity!!! So many amazing plot twists and supporting characters. The same bleak world view, the same unjust society, the same protagonists doing right things despite the cost. Mo Xi’s intensity and inability to let go (he’s imprinted on Gu Mang and that’s it) is romantic, bone-shakingly intense, and tragic all at once. And oh Gu Mang! So many times I just wanted to reach into the book physically to protect him. The novel deals with unjust societies, memory versus personality, what it’s like to be good in a bad universe etc. And it both made me sob and giggle, repeatedly, and sold me on literally death-defying (but not honor-defying!) love.
Oh, and special shout out to the fact that like 2ha, you may start out hating some characters and end up a rabid fangirl (cough Murong Lian!)
3. Qiang Jin Jiu - a dense political tome that takes a while to get going but then it’s a runaway train.
In a fictional dynasty, Shen Zechuan, the only remaining son of a disgraced aristocratic family and Xiao Chiye, the younger son of a family of generals guarding the border join forces (and then something else) to get power and pull down the dysfunctional system.
This is so elegant and smart (a rare web novel I’d recommend to anyone who just loves solid period fiction) and you probably need a notebook to keep track of the politics and military strategy. These characters are very very smart not just because the author says so.
As to the characters, there is a large cast and I love many of them, but for me the novel is made by Shen Zechuan and Xiao Chiye. SZC is gorgeous and delicate and icy and can kill you before you have time to blink. Saddled with the sins of the family he had no pleasant interaction with, he claws his way out of hell (seeing the sinkhole he was trapped in, literally as well) to take down those who wronged him but also to amass power so all the tragedy and corruption won’t happen again and the whole rotten system comes crashing down. XCY is a military genius who is trapped as a hostage in the capital because the court doesn’t trust his family. He longs to return to the plains of home and to take his rightful place. The two men start out as bitter enemies, then reluctant and sniping allies, then as friends and eventually as one of the most gorgeous, tender, swoony OTPs.
Anyway this is one is a bona fide masterpiece, equal parts smart and emotionally intense.
4. Wu Chang Jie - are you an emotional vampire? I am and this novel is a banquet.
In a highly fantastical setting, we meet our protagonists - the sunny Xie Bian and the intense and surly Fan Wushe. Xie Bian is a human who assists his master in conveying souls to the underworld and making sure no mishaps happen. Bian is concentrated sunshine in human form and to meet him is to love him. When the novel opens, his drunk master brings back another human to be his shidi and assist with duties - said human is uncommunicative, intense and surly Wushe. Bian is excited to have a shidi but little does he know that a story dealing with the horrors of past lifetime is about to start.
Anyway, why WCJ? So many reasons. It has such a dark bleak worldview - this world is a horrifying system where powerful cannibalize each other’s cores for an impossible chance to ascend, where gods have sealed off their realm and all that’s left is neverending human misery and hell (the only way you’d see a deity is if they’d been sent down to suffer over and over and over), where even reincarnation doesn’t fix things and bad acts are often unpunished. And the novel then asks - is it worth being a good person in such a world? More, is it worth being a good person in such a world when nothing good has ever happened to you and you have been repeatedly betrayed due to your goodness? And the answer, on Bian’s part, is an uncompromising yes.
Ah yes, the other reason to love this novel - the protagonists and their fucked up fucked up relationship. Bian (who was Prince Ziheng in the past life) is so genuinely good. But he is that rare thing - good but not saintly, noble but not cloying. So much of the novel is his getting taken apart over and over and barely able to put himself back together every time but his soul is still as amazing as ever.
And then there is Wushe (who was Prince Zixiao in past life, Ziheng’s not-bio-related brother.) Wushe is not a good person. He is a monster. And he loves Bian/Ziheng more than his life and his soul and the entire world but he’s also the one who hurt him more than anyone else ever could and did it over and over. His love survived a literal century of torture in the worst kind of hell and refused the usual memory loss of new life. But it also humiliated and broke Ziheng down to his constituent parts.
One of the things that is so fascinating to me about this novel is the question of what can be forgiven/what should be forgiven/what kind of expiation is enough/can you ever love someone who you loved so much and then he hurt you so badly and is now repentant? And it never sweeps trauma under the rug or hand waves it away but deals with it head on.
If you want healthy relationships, you should stay far away from this novel but if intense insane ones with a feral barely human one capable of destroying the world leashed by love and guilt to the sane deeply good one is your bag, come right in.
There is also the world building and the fact that yes, the big fall out between Ziheng x Zixiao is based on not knowing all the facts but it’s not “why can’t you talk?! This is dumb!” But is totally in keeping with both events and their characters. It’s reasonable for Ziheng to do what he does and for Zixiao to misunderstand and decide Ziheng is now his biggest enemy (but still one he’s fixated on) and for Ziheng to never be able to clarify.
Anyway, once again this is trigger warning central so please heed those, but if they are no issue, this one is wonderful.
5. OK, this is hard and switches between Sha Po Lang, Heaven Official’s Blessing and The Golden Stage depending on my mood. So what the hell, I am gonna write about all of them.
Sha Po Lang - so smart and so much clever world building. There is enough politicking to satisfy a Qiang Jin Jiu fan, it’s steampunk, and our two protagonists - Gu Yun, the empire’s most powerful general, who’s loyal to the empire despite being badly wronged by it, and Chang Geng, a cursed prince with barbarian blood and horrifying childhood - are wonderful separately and together. This is a huge slow burn but it’s totally worth it! They fall in love with each other’s hearts and brains and ability as much as anything. (Yes, this is the one with the yifu thing. Gu Yun is made Chang Geng’s foster father when he rescues him and brings him back to the capital as a way to keep CG safe in imperial strife. They are 12 and 19 at the time so clearly it’s never a parental relationship.)
Heaven Official’s Blessing (TCGF) - I love it’s sprawling narrative and cast, I love its inventive setting and picaresque story. It’s hilarious and can make me cry. But the novel’s place on this list is due to Xie Lian who is part Kenshin part drama WWX part pure goodness wrapped in heartbreak and trauma wrapped in sunshine.
The Golden Stage - two smart and principled (yes, they both have principles different though they may be) men navigate their arranged marriage, their past friendship and their past break up, become a super couple (one of the healthiest danmei couples I’ve ever read and proves healthy doesn’t have to be boring), save the country and bring down the emperor or two and just generally this is my rainy day book.
I guess I didn’t write as much for the three n5 candidates as I did for 1-4 but my brain is beginning to curdle so...

Revised Muse Bio: Genis-Vell (MCU)
Tumblr media
Name: Geheneris Hala’son Genis-Vell
Age: Late 50’s or 60’s (decreased aging)
Series: Marvel Cinematic Universe
Faceclaim: Steven Yeun(Earth-199999)
Names:
-Captain Marvel (currently)
Affiliations:
-Kree Starforce (formerly)
-Ravagers (formerly)
-New Avengers
Description: Born and raised in Hala, Genis was expected by all of the Kree to be the greatest as his family was known to play a big role in Kree history and society since they were born from the first of them named Hala aka the first accuser. He lived a relatively normal life until it was changed when he was diagnosed with a Kree disease called the blackened much to his family’s shock. His mother and Kree Spy, Mar-Vell, discovered that tesseract radiation can starve off the disease as Genis came back to earth every four years using the pod used to house Steve Rogers. There Genis fell in love with Earth as he felt like he can be himself and learned many things there and it seemed the family was gonna have a happily ever after. Genis soon became friends with an unnamed blonde girl in a carnival after he begged his mom to go when the two rode on bumper cars and warned her to slow down. He did hear a name from her father calling her Carol.
He also became friends with Isaiah Bradley too who found him a bit odd but became close companions alongside his mom. Genis’s happy life on Earth ended when a Black Widow found out about his family’s identity and intercepted the location of their experimentation sight with his older sister coming for the first time. Said Black Widow set off a bomb with a young Genis absorbing the energy and survived but his life changed as undercover Russian operatives began to breach the place resulting in him losing full control of his powers. Horrified at what he’s done-Genis flew uncontrollably out of Earth’s atmosphere and crashed in Seknarf Nine where he met the reclusive and renowned Lady Hellbender who has retired from her life of hunting dangerous beasts. Hellbender took Genis under her wing and trained him how to use his powers but kept saying that he wasn’t ready at all much to his annoyance and chagrin at the same time.
Hellbender’s castle came under attack by a cartel that was after her for her mistakes as she told the young Genis-Vell to fly away for her wasn’t ready yet at all. Genis did as he was told and flew off while Hellbender fought off her assailants then landed on Contraxia and ran into Yondu Udonta. Yondu took Genis under his wing and introduced him to Peter Quill as the two became best friends and troublemakers at the same time. But despite being a Ravager, he still helped people which annoyed Yondu and made marvelous spectacles with his powers thus earning him the name “Captain Marvel” which he embraced with pride. Genis soon discovered about Peter’s induction into the Ravagers and reported it to Starak Ogord resulting in Yondu’s exile from the Ravagers. Yondu lambasted Genis for his actions resulting in him being thrown out of Clan Udonta. Genis wandered the galaxy as a lone hero and learned various worlds and ran into Carol who was Vers during a battle against Skrulls and saved her with his powers having an effect on her.
Genis soon became romantically involved with Valkyrie when he was staying in Sakaar and then moved in with her in the process thinking of perhaps having a normal life….until he found out about her line of work which was capturing dissenters for the Grandmaster resulting in both a messy breakup and Genis attempting to kill the Grandmaster only for Valkyrie to use a ship that rammed him up into the devil’s anus leaving him in space. He later met Lady Sif who he also became romantically involved soon enough repeating the same story with Valk with Genis wanting to move to Asgard much to her family’s disdain since he was a Ravager. But the two drifted apart due to their line of work, Sif was a warrior loyal to a country and Genis was a wandering hero. He wandered the galaxy once more and ran into Carol who introduced herself as Vers as they haven’t properly met and with nowhere else to go, joined the Kree Starforce in the same team as Carol. The two became romantically involved after multiple missions together but he felt like something was wrong with his life with her and Kree life in general, he soon discovered the truth after a conversation between Yon-Rogg and Minn-Erva much to his horror and sought to tell Carol…only to disappear without a trace.
After an unknown amount of time, Genis found himself in a mental institution where the doctor claimed that his name isn’t Genis-Vell but really Walter Lawson and that he’s here recovering from a mental breakdown after his killing his wife Carol for killing his kids. He said that Walter has some kind of disorder that makes believe that they’re superheroes or otherworldly beings to cope with loss and started a session with him and another patient, Wanda Maximoff.
Personality: Genis is known to be a loving and carefree Kree who cared about others almost all the time much for Yondu and Peter Quill’s annoyance yet he showed a reckless side to himself because of his powers which he uses at a limited time as he sees them as a blessing and a curse because of what happened. Genis is defined also by his family code and that code is that the galaxy should always be protected no matter what race, he despised the Kree-Skrull War and disobeyed orders. He also didn’t like being revered as a god which disturbs him to no end while also being wise as well due to his past experiences. Another aspect of him is that he’s known to be extremely sassy and sarcastic, often teasing other heroes like Namor who he calls Mr. Nimbus and is extremely knowledgeable of other planets as he keeps a journal.
The Kree is also very wise as well using knowledge to avoid or resolve conflicts. He used the pass code the Skrull spies use to trick them into thinking he’s one of them and tries his best to appeal to Namor at times. He’s known to be sort of the “cool dad” of the New Avengers getting along with mostly all of them albeit there’s a bit of a fracture between him and Yelena. The most notable relationship he has is with Carol Danvers as the two knew each other since they were children, it is implied that it’s romantic in nature as well which Kamala teases her for it. Though there is a bit of a violent side of Genis, especially when he nearly curb stomped Peter Quill in self defense. Genis in his Ravager years was a far different person which compared him to an honorable thief and a rogue with a heart of gold yet was cocky and arrogant preferring to solve his problems using his powers which annoyed Yondu.
But Genis always followed the Ravager code hence why he reported Yondu to Starak and hasn’t regretted a thing until Yondu’s death. Genis’s relationship with Yondu and Peter Quill was complicated as he saw Yondu as a father knowing he couldn’t live a normal life anymore back at Hala but it all changed when he learned from Peter Quill about how he was taken. He also considered Peter Quill his best friend and closest thing to a brother as well until his betrayal but showed no remorse for telling Starak cause it was the right thing to do and told him that to find his own path and live like a man instead being a thief which those words stuck to Quill years later. Afterwards Genis became a wandering hero that helped others for free but felt lost and alone until he met Valkyrie who became his first girlfriend as the two fell in love until he found out what she’s been doing leading to a deadly fight where he was shot out into the Devil’s Anus and fell in love with Sif who he dated for years but their paths were different resulting in a break up as he dedicated himself to protecting everyone while Sif was dedicated to protecting Asgard. The theme of Genis and his tragedy is that he sacrifices everything for the greater good, he sacrificed his friendship with Peter Quill, his relationships with Sif and Valkyrie and his father-son bond with Yondu and nearly his own life as well resulting in those years hardening and humbling him into a better person. This caused him to join the Starforce as he had nothing to lose until he realized that he has something to fight.

As soon as your period was light, your husband resumed his urine stick stalking behavior. Armed with exactly three tests, Shigaraki got on the phone to consult your OBGYN after her long weekend off. He told her about the anovulatory cycle and asked when next to try for a baby. Ever loyal to the man that saved her child’s life, the witch immediately threw you under the bus and informed him that the first day of bleeding would be about day one of the new cycle.
After the consult, your husband sat at the breakfast table with his cell phone, thumbing through the data.
“...and since you seem to have the twenty-eight-day cycle, our next best chances will be this weekend starting Friday.” He waved at the pink calendar in front of him.
You didn’t even look up as bowl by bowl you set his breakfast in front of him. Today’s menu was cold silken tofu, grilled fish, Niigata Koshihikari rice, and miso soup. Shigaraki had been advocating for hotel bread with jam but you compromised with sweet tamago. As the last dish appeared in front of him, he frowned and stared up at your thin-lipped expression.
“You don’t seem very excited,” he stated in a flat voice
You rolled your eyes up to look at him. “You don’t say.”
Shigaraki frowned and stared at you. “Oh?” His tone was harsh, almost pointed.
You dried your hands on your apron before untying the bow. As you went to take your seat, Shigaraki stood and pushed in your chair. His large fingers curled over the wooden back, grasping the varnished surface with tense pressure.
“My dear, that’s a very rude thing to say when your husband has gone to all this effort.”
The hackles on the back of your neck stood. You hunched your shoulders, eyes refusing to meet his. You placed your hands in your lap, letting them knot together and grip each other for comfort. “You’re just going to get overeager and hurt me again. It’s not something I really look forward to,” you murmured.
Silently, Shigaraki released the chair and set himself back in his seat. His meaty fingers found his chin and he cocked his head at your comment.
“Well, I suppose if you behave for the rest of this week, I would be willing to make an arrangement with you.”
You raised your head.
The blond lifted a single finger. “You can choose one of the positions we use on Saturday.”
You cringed. “One?” The hairs on your arms rose. You rubbed at your skin, trying to drive off the eerie feeling. “How many times were you planning on having sex on that day?”
There was a beaming, toothy smile in response.
You shot him lip curled a look of disgust and grabbed up your chopsticks. “Never mind. I don’t want to know.”
Shigaraki mimicked you and took up a bite of the sweet rolled eggs. “My dear, you know I don’t need to make a deal with you at all for this. I can just make you say yes to whatever I want instead. ”
You stopped eating, the rice hanging mere centimeters from your mouth. Instinctively, your hands flew to your neck, but, as promised, the collar wasn’t there.
Shigaraki twirled his finger in the air. “Now that I understand your body better, it’s a very simple matter for me to get your consent… eventually.” He rested his elbow on the table and shot your dusky bedroom eyes.  “How long do you think you could last this time? You were pretty far gone after that hour and a half in the car.”
You slammed your hands down on the table and flew to your feet so fast the chair fell over backward. As it clattered to the floor you glowered at the man in front of you. Your head hung low as shadows fell in your eyes. “Don’t you understand this is the same problem as last time!” you hissed through gritted teeth.
Shigaraki crossed his legs and fanned his fingers together.  “Quite the contrary, I’m planning on being quite gentle with you. After all, you enjoy it so much,” His crocodile grin widened. “Right, puppy ?”
You winced.
Shigaraki’s smile turned sour. “Where did this negative attitude of yours come from? It’s quite obnoxious.”
Where did the negative attitude come from Dar-ling? Oh nowhere really. After all, you got that bitch a breeding schedule. Bitches love breeding schedules. Really makes ‘em feel humanized.
“You’re the one who said you weren’t overly rushed…” You reached across your body and grasped your upper arm to still the angry tremors.
Shigaraki shook his head and rose to his feet. As his towering form came closer, it cast your body in shadow. You looked up and the annoyed grimace on his face made your heart skip. He crossed his arms and stared down his nose at you.
“This is for your own sake,” he stated firmly. “It’s abundantly clear you need a child to keep you occupied when I’m not here or your behavior becomes moody and self-destructive.”
You don’t know when your spine came back. Maybe it was after you’d successfully gotten him to delete the pictures. Maybe it was because he kept insisting he wanted you to do what you wanted. Maybe it was because you’d simply forgotten who you were talking to.
“What makes me moody and self-destructive is that you isolated me from everyone just to make me like you! Well news flash, Dar-ling! I did like you! I do like you!” Your open palm spayed across your chest. Fresh tears started to build in your eyes. “But you make it impossible when all you do is control me! You say you want me to be confident and then you step all over me. Are you so deaf that you just can’t hear what’s coming out of your mouth or are you so delusional you think ANYONE could be happy being trampled under you like this?! Why do you think your little brother ran away!?”
Whatever made you do it, it was a very poor life choice.
