The Tokyo International Forum, designed by Rafael Vinoly Architects, was a competition winning design for a civic center close to Tokyo and Yurakucho rail stations in Tokyo, Japan. According to the architect the design concept was to create a "precinct fully accessible to the public and protected from the impacts of the surroundings" (the chaotic urban Tokyo environment). The photo was taken on the fourth floor of the main glass atrium. The atrium roof seems inspired by the design of boat hulls and is one of the most amazing fully glass enclosed interior spaces in the world. 2017 Design in Bloom

In what has now become an annual tradition, our Gettliffe Architecture team was excited to participate in Modern in Denver’s 2017 Design in Bloom event.

In discussing our team’s approach to the piece, we returned again and again to the inspiration sparked by discovering new practices that complicate or defy an established path. This drive to listen, discover, and learn, is critical to our work. Through design charrettes and discussions about our multi-cultural experiences, we were led to the Japanese tradition of Ikebana.

In keeping with our architectural ethos, the Ikebana tradition is a focused cultivation of a connection between humanity and nature. Those who practice Ikebana engage in a meditative process of balance and spatial awareness through the arrangement of flowers; reflective of how we as architects go about our process of arranging space and experiences.

Our reinterpretation of a classically minimal suiban vessel took the form of welded steel plates, generously fabricated by our friends at Quality Metals. The weaving of steel plate sets the stage for the blossoming floral arrangement, and alludes to the interweaving of cultures. The three types of flowers at varying heights relate to the Ikebana principals of Shin(Heaven), Soe(Humankind), and Tai(Earth). We also introduced the Water element as the reflective pool of the vessel. Each component of the arrangement is unique in its own right, but serves as an integral piece to the whole. We titled our arrangement Tejiendo, which means “weaving” in Spanish.

As always, the Design in Bloom event was a blast to attend. It was so much fun to see the incredible variety in the arrangements from our peers in the architectural community. Thank you to Modern in Denver and Space Gallery for hosting this inspiring event – we look forward to next year!

Design In Bloom | Modern In Denver

Last week, we had a chance to participate in the 4th Annual Design In Bloom event hosted by Modern In Denver. As design competitions go, this one invites architects to work in a medium outside of buildings to create small scale installation pieces, similar to model making.

Porcelanosa asked us to work with them on a design using Krion, typically applied to counter tops and made of sturdy, heavy-use and non-porous material. We were interested in bending perceptions of this dense material and giving it a ‘light’ quality.

We did this by creating a floating cantilever, where 5x5 inch cubes seem to be suspended in air, twisting perceptions of gravity as well. Below are images that show concept to completion.

Check out the latest from lead designer Crystal: Here are some progress shots of our Littleton home remodel! We have been working on the kitchen, master bathroom, and mother’s bathroom in this home, with some other general advising on various materials throughout the house. In the kitchen, we have sleek modernism shining through at every turn! Gorgeous slab cabinets, linear metal hardware, and concrete look quartz countertops are all part of this handsome aesthetic. Some of my favorite details include the back wall Brazilian pecan backsplash and countertop, and the one-sided island waterfall top. In the master bath, we have stunning and oversized Graphic floor tiles paired against matte white subway tiles in a grid pattern. Soon we will bring in the stainless steel soaking tub and finish up the shower. In the mother’s bathroom, we have imbibed a Mediterranean feel by tiling the floor and walls with a natural travertine tile in a Versailles pattern. This is accompanied by modern wood floating vanities and what will be a long, elegant shower. Balcony above the dining room in my first house design. The space was designed so that there was a clear line of sight between the first and second floors. This allowed the client, who was deaf, to easily communicate between levels.
