A Productive Delirium

The two weeks have been rather extraordinary. Even if I had to fight some quite awkward “summer illnesses” I managed to write 20 pages (A4), make 27 graphics, 22 new presets as well as shooting 21 video clips about it all.

But the perhaps most important thing to mention is a sudden inspiration which hit me while Ï was bound to stay in bed. The only view I could enjoy was the view into my garden (some call it a jungle, but I like it that way) through the balcony door. No wind was going, a hot summer day, only some few birds singing here and there.

Day after day always this same picture – and suddenly I heard music in my mind. I saw these very slow, very lazy movements of the high grass in a nearly only imaginary wind, a single leaf changing its position only a tiny little bit … hours after hours.

And slowly a relaxed tune, only a single one at first, was in my mind. So clear, so real as if I was listening to real music. Then a second voice, a third one, a fourth one.. all synchronous to these slight movements.

And piece by piece a whole symphony of ambient generative music built itself up in my mind. I didn´t do anything but just listening to what was going on in my head and watching the picture of my garden through the open balcony door.

A few days later when I was a bit better I took notes, drafted first patches. This piece is going to be a part of the book for sure.

The Curse of the Phantom Tympanum

Amazing film directed by Graeme Cole that I produced sound effects, ambiances and music for, has just won the Thingamajig award at Kinoskop Festival in Belgrad, Serbia. The sound work was entirely realised by means of modular and analog synthesis.

A part of the foley, sound fx and music is currently being shown as sound installation at the Center for Contemporary Art of Meymac (France) as part of a group exhibition.

Self generating drones (headphones recommended) The Mimeophon’s Rate Output is triggering the Envelope on the Ceis which is opening up the Quattro Figaro. The trigger outputs from the Ceis’ release stage is advancing the Popcorn in combination with the Mimeophon’s Rate Output. The triggers on the decay and sustain are exciting the QPAS. The Just Friends is sending audio into the Quattro Figaro as well as sending audio rate modulation to the Mimeophon, QPAS, Ceis, Popcorn and X-Pan. Audio is going from the Quattro Figaro mono’d into the Mimeophon, converted into stereo and sent to the QPAS. CARDINAL – Is it really like VCV Rack as a free VST?

Part 2

What are the differences to VCV Rack?

There´s a list showing all the differences “CARDINAL – VCV Rack VST”, most of which are not important for the topics of this book. You´ll find the link to the complete list in the RESOURCES chapter. Let me point out only the following therefore. There is an AU format of CARDINAL, but not of VCV Rack. Both, the Synth plugin format as well as the FX plugin variant of VCV Rack come with 16 audio ins and outs, but both (synth and FX) variants of CARDINAL come only with 2 audio ins and outs.

VCV Rack can load complete third party VSTs (via VCV Host modules, which can/must be separately bought), CARDINAL cannot load/host such third party VSTs. Well, read the whole list if you like, but I think these are the most important differences – and even these are not essential for the matter of this book.

When should we use CARDINAL, and when VCV Rack?

Well, I can´t help answering (half joking): We should use CARDINAL if we don´t want to pay money, but want to use the modular software synth in a DAW environment – of course.

No, seriously, the real question reads of course: Why should I want to make generative music (or any music with a modular synth) in a DAW environment?

Well, it´s mainly about recording and – even more – about mixing and arranging. And while CARDINAL as well as VCV Rack offer a lot of quite sophisticated ways of mixing and recording, when it comes to arranging parts to a complete piece, then things get rather complicated – outside of a DAW – possible, but complicated.

And even with mixing: of course we can patch a whole channel strip containing all the functionality we can only dream of in CARDINAL or VCV Rack – but it´s cumbersome. Having our super luxury DAW mixer at hand with its simple and easy way of adding even more FX and functions to it is a lot – and I mean “a lot” - more comfortable and fun.

And if you want the ultimately flexible and hyper function loaded producing environment, well, why not loading CARDINAL as a synth-VST in one of your DAW´s tracks, as well as a second instance as an FX-VST in your channel strip ( I suggest using two large monitors with an arrangement like that).

And if you work with hybrid set-ups (“hello” to all ES-9 users) containing software synths (modulars and non-modulars) as well as hardware synths (modular and non-modulars), and eventually even acoustical instruments, well, then you won´t come around using a DAW - no (practical) way!

Let me mention even another aspect: CARDINAL as well as VCV Rack Pro enable us to use famous (and as hardware quite expensive) FX modules in our DAWs. Partly for free (CARDINAL), partly for a rather moderate price. For example Mutable Instruments RINGS, or Mutable Instruments RIPPLES, or Mutable Instruments WARPS. They all are included as software versions in CARDINAL and VCV Rack.

Or we can simply make use of versatile modules, which we don´t find in our DAWs. For example the 8-channel multistage envelope generator SHAPEMASTER, which is part of both, VCV Rack as well as CARDINAL. The preset “chapter_12_CARDINAL_1” show an example of CARDINAL in FX mode, in which 4 channels of SHAPEMASTER modulate 4 different FX modules.
