[ID: First photo shows a mixed seaweed salad topped with toasted sesame seeds; in the background are bowls of pickled daikon and kake udon. Second photo is a close-up showing light shining through the seaweed. End ID]
わかめと昆布サラダ / Wakame to konbu sarada (Seaweed and kelp salad)
A wide variety of seaweed-based salads are made by Japanese home cooks. They may contain only a mix of seaweeds and a dressing, but may also feature vegetables including cucumber, carrots, lotus root (レンコン / はす), daikon (だいこん), corn, edamame (枝豆), or onion. Dressings are as varied as cooks, and may be based around sesame oil (ごま油), rice vinegar (米酢), miso paste (みそ / 味噌), ponzu sauce (ポン酢), or mayonnaise (マヨ).
This recipe is a good way to use up reconstituted kombu and wakame that were steeped to make soup stock. It includes instructions for two dressings: one based on rice vinegar and sesame oil, and another with a sesame-mayo base.
"わかめ" or "ワカメ" ("wakame") is likely from "若" ("waka," "young") + "海布" ("me," "seaweed"); it is a particular species of edible seaweed (Undaria pinnatifida) that is farmed in Japan, Korea, and China. It is sometimes called "sea mustard" in English. Without further specification, "wakame" in a culinary context is taken to mean the leaves of the seaweed; these are the same leaves that are eaten in miso soup (みそ汁).
The etymology of "昆布" ("kombu" or "konbu") is unknown. It may be a phonetic Japanese reading of the Middle Chinese "昆布" (Mandarin: "kūnbù") (itself from "綸布" "*krūn pās," "green ribbon" + "cloth"), used to refer to various types of kelp and seaweed. In Japanese, the term refers to any of a few species of edible kelp from the Laminariaceae family.
Dried kombu is steeped to make one type of dashi ("出汁" / "だし"), a stock that is used in various soups and sauces. Once reconstituted, it may be steeped again to make 二番だし ("niban dashi," "second dashi"), sliced and simmered as one ingredient in a 煮物 ("nimono," simmered dish), or roasted and combined with other seaweeds and spices to make 振り掛け ("furikake").
"サラダ" ("sarada") is probably derived from the English "salad."
Note that the "seaweed salad" served at Japanese restaurants in the U.S. is not commonly eaten in Japan. It is shipped out to restaurants and stores pre-packaged, and is made with colored オゴノリ ("ogonori"; "agar" on ingredients lists), きくらげ ("kikurage"; "wood ear mushroom" or "fungus" on ingredients lists), and byproducts of wakame including 茎わかめ ("kukiwakame," wakame stem) and メカブ ("mekabu," wakame sprouts; both listed as "wakame" or "seaweed" on ingredients lists). You may be able to find this salad in the freezer section of your local Asian grocery store. If you want to approximate the texture of this salad at home, try buying some mixture of ogonori, kikurage, kukiwakame, mekabu, モズク ("mokuzu"), and/or ひじき ("hijiki"). Instructions for the dressing are below.
Recipe under the cut!
Patreon | Paypal | Venmo
Ingredients:
For the salad:
2 cups total reconstituted kombu, wakame, hijiki, or other kelp or seaweed
Vegetable additions to seaweed salads are possible and common. Try adding some cucumber, julienned carrots, sliced lotus root, sliked daikon radish, corn, edamame, or sliced onion that's been soaked in plum vinegar for 15 minutes.
If you're including cucumbers, slice them, salt them, allow them to drain in a colander for about 10 minutes, then gently squeeze them of excess liquid, to avoid making your salad watery.
For dressing 1:
1 Tbsp unseasoned rice vinegar (米酢)
1 Tbsp toasted sesame oil (煎りごま油)
1/2 kosher salt
1/2 tsp vegetarian granulated sugar
1/2 tsp Japanese soy sauce (しょうゆ / 醤油) (such as Kikkoman's)
2 tsp toasted sesame seeds (いりごま)
To make U.S. restuarant-style seaweed salad, omit the soy sauce; replace the sugar with high fructose corn syrup; and add a pinch of cayenne pepper, 1/4 tsp of onion powder or yeast extract, and a pinch of MSG.
For dressing 2:
2 Tbsp vegan mayonnaise
1/2 tsp unseasoned rice vinegar (米酢)
1/4 tsp dried ground shiitake mushroom, or vegetarian dashi powder
1/4 tsp vegetarian granulated sugar
Drop of djion mustard
Pinch kosher salt
1 tsp Japanese soy sauce (しょうゆ / 醤油) (such as Kikkoman's)
Drizzle of mirin (みりん)
2 tsp toasted sesame seeds, ground in a mortar and pestle or spice mill
If you eat eggs, you can replace the first five ingredients with 2 Tbsp Kewpie mayo (キューピーマヨ).
For a halal version, replace the mirin with an extra pinch of sugar.
Instructions:
For the salad:
1. Slice kombu into very thin strips. Slice wakame into thin strips, or leave as-is, as desired. Slice other flat dried seaweed into thin strips or bite-sized pieces.
For dressing 1:
1. Whisk all ingredients except sesame seeds together in a small bowl. Toss with seaweed. Top with sesame seeds and serve cold.
For dressing 2:
1. Whisk all ingredients together in a small bowl. Toss with seaweed. Serve cold.

Shenanigans at Sea
a/n: paradise at sea oc rambles bc i have these silly little losers in my brain again- these are in no particular episode order!
oc | taezo mentions word count: 0.7k
Tae is, completely and utterly unsurprised to find out that the Nadeshiko village drama was caused by his father and left for Naruto to clean up. He does, however, raise his eyebrows when Tokiwa extends the offer to him as Jiraiya's next of kin and quickly declines for a myriad of reasons left unsaid.
Yamato, on the other hand, is mildly amused, and thoroughly teases his lover for it once they get a moment to themselves in their lodgings away from prying eyes.
---
While telling scary stories one night to pass the time, the crew urge Tae to speak up because he's—though to be frank, completely in character—been quiet the entire time. He looks to Tenzo, almost for approval, and when he receives a 'go on, join the fun' nod in response, he sighs.
The tall man goes onto recall an incident when he was much younger, not long after he was promoted to chunin during the third war and sent as backup to a camp near the front lines. It wasn't long before people started hearing noises in the middle of the night and even getting violently sick, the medic-nin present were completely stumped at what could possibly cause this.
It was long after Tae's squad moved to a different location but as it turned out, people were dumping bodies into a gorge that had water running close enough to their own supply to pollute it.
A perfectly reasonable explanation for the sickness, the noises were also probably just general sounds of agony from war, if not people's hallucinations from being out there for too long; but many still believed that they were being cursed by the wrath of their enemies and those fallen from their own ranks alike, Tae included.
Naruto was mostly fine at first since it wasn't a technically a paranormal story, but as the older jonin recalled that incident and memories from around that time, the air around them started to feel colder.
Everyone went to bed frigid with sweat that night.
The next time they docked at an island with a river, folks triple checked the source upstream. Though they were met with the actual ghost ship around two days later.
While that was mostly uneventful in comparison to the usual level of tomfoolery everyone on this crew seemed to get up to either willingly or against it, Aoba and Gai did notice that when Yamato was grabbed off the ship by the giant crab's tentacles, Tae's distant act slipped for a second as he called out to Tenzo instead and immediately ran out after him.
He used his flying disc attack to lop off one of the creature's claws and Naruto's rasenshuriken finished it off with the help of the ghost boy's broom.
---
When they were trapped in the harbor of Mokuzu Island, Tae used that attack twice more to destroy the giant rock after Yamato's mokuton overuse strains his arm.
Though it does drain a lot of chakra from him, Tae seemed to fare much better than everyone else, so later on Shikamaru asks him why he'd never seen his senior use this jutsu until now. Naruto overhears him and loudly proclaims how cool it looks, excitedly asking if he could teach it to him.
Their resident jinchuuriki's question alerted way more people than he'd like present on deck to hear, aware that even if they weren't actively looking their way that the jonin were still listening in, though Yamato spared his partner a questioning, soft glance. Tenten pretended like she wasn't eavesdropping too but he saw her scooch a tad bit closer at the loud chime of Naruto's voice.
Tae sighed, eyes honing in on nothing but the cat's cradle that he wove between his fingers, then reminded his juniors that living things were fragile. Their bodies were soft, tender, deserving of respect even in death; and that some jutsu were never meant to be used on other people.
Tenzo's gaze turned sympathetic when they meet for a brief moment, not wanting to stare for too long in front of the kids. Aoba kept to himself though Gai's head did raise as realization washed over Tenten and Shikamaru instantaneously, along with a cold feeling in the bottom of their stomachs. Naruto took a little more time, but when he did put the pieces together; Tae couldn't meet his eyes.
He knew the only thing Naruto would see in his own was regret.

Chapter 20- Part 18
“Antares” is the name of a major star, which I felt was fitting considering the Gothita line's association with stars and astrology. Speaking of, here's the PokéDex entry, once more:
And since this chapter is getting pretty long, I think we'll do one more encounter. And this one's a special one, which makes it even more fitting to finish off with.
To start, we need to go back to…this place.
The sadness of being back here after…what happened aside, there's something left behind in Corey's room to go and find.
Now with this item, go back to Rhodochrine Jungle and the Underroot and-
Encounter a Shiny Woobat, apparently??
Man- I get (what assume are) the increased Shiny odds are probably really great for people who like to Shiny hunt, but I'm…not that. I like running into Shinies casually and rarely! The rarity is what makes them special to me! When it's like this, that special-ness is kinda wearing off, you know?
I mean, I'm still gonna catch it, a Shiny is a Shiny, but still-
Yeah, Woobat has such strong suction, it's sucking up the pixels in the PokéDex text box!
Coming up with a name for a Woobat was kinda tough- at first I was thinking of something related to “heart”, then I realized heart sounded like the name “Art”, but that still didn't sound proper, so that's how I settled on “Arty”.
Now, continuing on with no further interruptions, go to the bottom of the Underroot, where those lakes were. And there, we find…
A very sad, very familiar-looking little guy.
Yeah- with the Silver Ring, Xera is now able to seek out Corey's Pokémon and take them in herself, starting with Skrelp!
“Kuzu” comes from the etymology of Skrelp’s Japanese name- specifically, mokuzu, which means “seaweed scraps.” Fitting in with Skrelp’s seaweed associations:
Out of all the names I've given to Pokémon throughout this chapter, this one might be one of my favorites, I feel really proud of it.
Alas, that will have to do for this chapter. There is one more side quest I wanna complete before taking on Shelly's Gym, but I'll save that for next time. For now, thank you everyone for reading! I hope you're looking forward to the conclusion of this Lapis Ward Gym business, I know I'm looking forward to the upcoming battle (as terrified as I equally am)!
So next time, we'll finally challenge the Lapis Ward Gym, and even before that…we're gonna join a gang!!

Death at Sea
ep 7 gave me nothing.
藻屑 (mokuzu) is literally 'seaweed scraps', figuratively dying at sea (and becoming seaweed scraps) I guess the mo is the same as in marimo~

In the Beast’s Den
The New MAO Arc opened with a simple way,Mao responded to a mother’s Desperate Call. As he and Nanoka arrived they beheld the Ominous Case. Thus he performed an exorcism to save the girl from a curse. As it unfolds High Stakes are revealed! Nanoka coming along with Mao,and even disguise for any investigation is a good ploy.Either to appear as a scholar to search in Shouko’s religious sect, either as a maid in a respectable salon.
But it’s now different:She’s been noticed by the Gokou. She also knows the stench of betrayal, such as of Kagami Souma of how someone won’t sweat just to get Power with not a bit of Morals.
On Mao’s plan Nanoka donned a borrowed sailor fuku, entered the School, confronted the Girls perpetrator of the Curse.Kagari, assistant of metal user Hakubi!Would we thought Nanoka foolishly charge to Kagari and ask her Questions? Well Mao had anticipated troubles,so he provided her with a Protective talisman.
Kagari pinned down Nanoka, now assuming of being in Power Position she states the reasons,Nanoka chan patiently listened to the story.Kagari stated it clearly:Hakubi doesn’t know about all this school cursing ,it’s a mixed of training and pleasure.Plus Her family is running curse Shop, all it’s Power derives from the Puppet Needle, they inherited it by an ancestor,ex pupil in the Gokou Manor.
Nanoka(albeit disgusted with the Mentality of Sadistic Curse doing)remained calm.Once She listened All the story she used the talisman, got free and raced on Kagari. At the same time Mao hears out in what kind of mess Nanoka chan’s got.
Points of the Arc:
Just how all things would’ve come,if Maonoka had gotten quite suspicious with the Kagami family? And with Souma’s Open eagerness for Beast Using too?By anticipating they would’ve searched this household and get the centuries old Scroll (see Kagami,or else as Ayakashi Beast Scroll arc),before Hakubi’s actions.Souma wouldn’t have betrayed Mao.Well, things came as we know them.
The Why Kagari is doing school cursing, with no strategic plan, doesn’t diminish the seriousness. Maonoka don’t have any luxury to be lax, like the beginning of the Kagami arc. It’s so Vital for them to make it,with the Lessons from the past arcs. As long as the Houshou family possesses the Tool it can curse people, and She’s a valuable Asset of Hakubi. So Vital to Mao team to deprive the Houshou family of the Tool .
I had wondered for a while:Just for how long will Mao be on the tiresome run,the prey of the Gokou and their underlings? Now comes this slight chance for Maonoka from prey to become Hunters.

psychological manga recs!
DISCLAIMER !! i'll try to list all of the content warnings, but a lot of these deal with a lot of mature and triggering themes such as: sa/rape, suicide, self harm, abuse, etc. read these with caution.
ones marked with a star have unhappy/unclear endings if you want to avoid (or go straight towards) depressing media. 💫
goodnight punun, inio asano: the first psychological manga i've read. follows a punpun, who is drawn as bird, as he navigates childhood and adulthood in an incredibly unfair world, desperately in love with the same girl since elementary school. like dazai's no longer human in manga format, very well written with incredible art. CWs: sa, rape, abuse (main element in the story), suicide, domestic violence, substance abuse, sexual content, moderate gore, cults, and there may be self harm! (i forget-- but this manga has many many many triggering aspects.) 💫
a lollipop or a bullet, sakuraba kazuki/sugimoto iqura: hidden gem that i cannot recommend enough! nagisa is a lonely studious girl living in a small town. when mokuzu, the daughter of a washed-up singer, transfers to nagisa's school, an unforgettable summer ensues. mokuzu tells outlandish tales, such that she is a mermaid, and bugs nagisa to be her friend. as nagisa reluctantly spends time with her, she discovers there may be some startling truths behind mokuzu's lies. CWs: abuse (main concept), animal abuse, animal death, bruises/physical signs of abuse, some gore. 💫
the flowers of evil, shuzo oshimi: middle schooler kasuga is an incredibly average boy living in a small town in the mountains. he has no interest besides literature, especially baudelaire's the flowers of evil. but when kasuga takes home his crush's gym clothes on an impulse and is witnessed by the enigmatic nakamura, his life turns upside down. nakamura forces him into a contract: she won't tell anyone that he stole the gym clothes, and kasuga must humor her strange wishes. one of my favorite manga of all time, i cried for days after finishing it. will always have a place in my heart. CWs: suicide, sa/rape.
homunculus, yamamoto hideo: scarce on money, nakoshi agrees to get a hole drilled into his head by a strange young doctor. once the hole is drilled, nakoshi has the ability to see homunculi: manifestations of peoples' worst qualities, guilts, fears, traumas, and 'true selves.' addicting!! it's 166 chapters but i finished it in less than a week. while none of the characters are particularly good people, it's an amazing story. CWs: rape (!! rape scene), self harm, gore, body horror, body dysmorphia, transphobia/misgendering & f slur and t slur used against a characer 💫
bokurano, kitou mohiro: 15 kids on summer break take part in a video game piloting a giant robot against a swarm of alien invaders. but they soon realize that there may be a dark truth to their mission. SO GOOD!! i highly recommend, the story is absolutely amazing, very quick paced, will make you cry. CWs: rape, abuse, many forms of (sometimes brutal) deaths, terminal disease in minor character, suicide (i think but i forget), self harm. 💫
blood on the tracks, shuzo oshimi: seiichi and his mother are very close. oddly so. there is definitely something wrong with his mother. (that is the whole plot.) beautifully drawn, excruciating, and fills you with psychological dread! CWs: HEAVY psychological abuse/manipulation, mental breakdowns are depicted, self harm. (i am not completely caught up with this, it's very good but not for the light of heart. i could be missing some content warnings.)
goodbye eri, tatsuki fujimoto: a one shot about a boy named yuta who makes a movie using footage he shot when his mother was dying, and shows it a school fair. after bad reception, he attempts to kill himself but is interrupted by a strange girl who claims she loved his movie. beautiful art, amazing story, stunning and wonderful!!! CWs: suicide, terminal illness.
my broken mariko, hirako waka: after her best friend mariko's suicide, tomyo steals her ashes and sets off on one final journey. CWs: suicide, self harm, child abuse.
pietà, haruno naenae: sohoko is the one bright spot in her girlfriend rio's life. tied together by a tragic past, can the two of them find the will to live in one another? heartbreaking, hopeful, and a really nice beautiful story. CWs: suicide, self harm, neglect.
nijigahara holograph, inio asano: told in achronological order between many points of views, in both the present and the past, is the story of a girl pushed into a well by her classmates and abandoned by her teacher. very hard to understand, this manga will take at least one reread and a video essay. but once you understand it, it's great!! so beautifully written and drawn. CWs: rape/sa, suicide, bullying 💫
helter skelter fashion unfriendly, okazaki kyouko: an examination of east asia's extremely high beauty standards, and the expiration date placed on women told through the desperate supermodel liliko. CWs: body dysmorphia, eating disorder (don't remember if it's explicitly stated but lots of themes/implications) 💫
suicide circle, furuya usamaru: kyoko watches in fear as her best friend saya joins a 'suicide club' that's planning on doing a group suicide after watching another 'club.' kyoko starts on an investigation concerning the tragic history of these suicide clubs. CWs: suicide, self harm, sa, HEAVY gore. 💫 (<- ish)
a school frozen in time, arawaka naoshi: 8 students find themselves trapped inside a school where time has seemed to stop. they are then forced to relive the day their classmate committed suicide by jumping off the school's roof... but the problem is they can't seem to remember who it was, or if it was one of them. depicts the incredible amount of stress placed on the students and the guilt that comes from being helpless. CWs: suicide, self harm.
let me know if you need links to read any of these!
#wow this is long#i'll probably update this regularly!#also ill make a one for horror recs <3#manga recommendations#manga recs

lyrics!
帰りくる船は Kaerikuru hune wa A ship coming home
帰るや否や Kaeru ya ina ya As soon as it comes home
海の匂いを Umi no nioi o Lends to the wall
壁にあずける Kabe ni azukeru The smell of the sea
まだ来ぬ船は Mada konu hune wa A ship still not come home
帰るや否や Kaeru ya ina ya As soon as it comes home
海の藻屑に Umi no mokuzu ni Before it sees the wall
壁見ぬうちに Kabe minu uchi ni Becomes the wreck of the sea
#in the english version i've swapped the last two lines of each quatrain so that it reads better in english#so 'umi no nioi o / kabe ni azukeru' means '[the ship] the smell of the sea to the wall lends'#which is normal sentence structure in japanese#the same with the final two lines of the second half#i don't understand the second 'kaeru ya ina ya' i might ask about that on lang-8#and while i'm talking mokuzu means scraps of seaweed apparently#but it's also a metaphor for death at sea#such an established metaphor that it's in the dictionary#so i've used the word 'wreck'

Yu-Gi-Oh! Sevens Episode 15 Sub Release
Thank you everyone for bearing with me with this minor delay! It was a mad dash this morning to find the raw as it came out later than usual.
Sub file only: click here! Video torrent with soft subs (720p): https://nyaa.si/view/1280004 DDL GDrive*: click here!
(* please read all associated warnings in the “Other SEVENS videos” folder before downloading anything there)
I now have a ko-fi, if you wish to leave a tip. Thank you very much for the support so far!!
If there are any corrections you wish to make, please put them through the submit box! For questions, use the ask box, but please make sure to read the FAQ first.
Below are extended translation notes for this episode, so spoilers ahead.
--------------
ソリッドビジョンですからね “After all, it’s just Solid Vision.”
Yes, your eyes (and ears) do not deceive you. Gakuto is directly referring to Solid Vision, the duel system introduced in ARC-V and hasn’t been heard of since then.
This episode in particular has a bunch of ARC-V easter eggs, and it was very fun to translate as someone who really loves that series!
edit: someone has pointed out it’s been referred to as “Solid Vision” even back in DM, but the phrase gained more usage in ARC-V thanks to Real Solid Vision. My bubble... it is popped.
キラー・バイトボール “Kill-Lure Bait Ball“
As said in the TL notes on the episode itself, this actually translates (literally) to “Killer Bite Ball”, but it isn’t something that makes sense in English. To localize a little bit, and in the spirit of SEVENS’ constant puns, I decided to translate this as “Kill-Lure”.
七つの海を股にかけた小学生漁師ヂュエリスト! “The elementary schooler duelist that rises with the power of the seven seas!“
This one threw me for a loop, but only not because I didn’t understand it. It was because I did.
股 (mata) means thigh, crotch, or groin. In this instance, the phrase is 海を股にかけた, or “gripping the thigh of the sea” which is a weird sentence to parse. However, this is also a phrase that exists in Chinese! It usually means to acquire something by relying on someone else. In layman’s terms, it’d be like “carrying” someone in a game.
Imagine my shock when I learned that this was also a phrase used in Japanese, haha. As a side note, I am indeed of Chinese ethnicity.
海の藻屑 (umi no mokuzu) “Watery grave” / “Davy Jones’ locker”
Maguro repeats this a lot throughout the episode. You may notice that while all of his instances of 海の藻屑 are translated as “watery grave”, Luke and Gakuto switch between that and “Davy Jones’ locker”. As he’s a fisherman and not a pirate, I couldn’t lean too heavily into the theme, but seeing as Luke and Gakuto probably don’t really see a difference, it was fun to play around with the translation.
For reference, they all use the same phrase (海の藻屑); I just translated it differently according to the character.
羽ばたく (habataku) “and fly!”
Yuuga’s summoning chant did indeed change this episode, in more ways than one. Specifically, the last verb he uses is 羽ばたく (habataku), meaning more specifically to “spread one’s wings” and/or “go out into the world”.
In the subs it was translated as “fly” for the sake of being able to read the sentence quickly enough in the short amount of time Yuuga allots to say it.
シビれたぜ (shibireta ze) “That gave me the shivers!”
Yet again your eyes and ears do not deceive you, Maguro does indeed use “shibi” as in “shibiberu” as in the shivers kid from ARC-V.
I highly appreciated the references this episode and this honestly became one of my more favorite ones as a result! Really, even when you think SEVENS has a little filler, it comes back with some other amazing stuff. I’m really enjoying my ride alongside all of you so far!
