Whew. Aren’t the lines blurred sometimes? The last few years have been about discerning what I really desire in my relationships. Not only my intimate partner, but friends, clients, even with family members. "A child is a child of everyone." ~ Sudanese Proverb. This picture of Takura and I in Sierra Leone in December 2003 surrounded by my cousins and nephews is so fitting of this proverb. I always feel like every child I encounter is my child. I literally get into mama mode whenever I am surrounded by children. When we were in Sierra Leone, Takura was everyone's child. All the adults had their own little ritual with Takura - some read him books, some took him for walks, some played games, some carried him on their backs, some picked him up and took him for haircuts. Most of these were people who were not even related to us. He truly was everyone's child. I am not sure if this affected the way I just treat every child as mine when I encounter them but the world would be an awesome place if a child, an African child, any child, is a child of everyone.
