A new book by one of my favorite authors. I got to read Vargas Llosa’s work when I was in uni back in Caracas. I loved the way he tells such vivid stories. Knowing this, my dad sent me this book a few months ago for my birthday and I’m so excited to read it! ✨Review✨ . Treacle Walker by Alan Garner . How do I BEGIN to describe the experience of reading this book? It’s fun, but it is so confusing (specially because english is my second language) and I spent most of my time googling things. Other than the language barrier, this is a fun and dreamy exploration on time. With a fondness for what’s silly and ridiculous, Alam Garner gives us a piece of him playing with words and sintaxis. It gave me Alice in Wonderland meets Take On Me by A-ha. ✨REVIEW✨ The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett . Today I tried put something different and wrote a mini review in spanish 💃🏻 . . Now for the English one: I loved, loved, looooved this book. It caught me in kind of a reading slump so it took me about a week and a half to finish it. I guess the beginning was a little slow but then the story diverges in different generations and perspectives so once it gained momentum, so did I. I feel like this is one of those books where you actually start missing the characters once you are finished and that is, of course, a sign that you have a good book in your hands. The story follows Desiree, Stella; two black women with light skin that part ways as one of them decides to live as a black woman and the other as a white one. You get to follow not only their stories and struggles but also the ones of their daughters, so the book allows you to see through the eyes of these very different characters and how they deal with race discrimination, prejudice and secrecy. Definitely I would recommend giving it a go, I even feel like it is important to do so. . have you read this book? ✨Review✨ The Butterfly Bruises by Palmer Smith First of all I want to thank the author @spdevsmithwriter wholeheartedly for sending me a copy of her book. I don’t normally read poetry but I was pleasantly surprised by how she serves little slices of her memories in a way that you can experience them so vividly, so I’ve been reading them slowly between chapters of other books and really enjoying the peace and calm they convey. I particularly enjoyed the short stories at the end (I’m more used to short stories 😅) for they seem to be written with such care and emotion. Raw and interesting. All of them. ✨Review✨🐇 Bunny by Mona Awad 🧌🌷👻🪓 . Might have some spoilers . What. A. Ride. I had no idea what was going on but I was excited. Bunny tells the story of Samantha, a scholarship student in a very prestigious MFA program. Being a lone wolf who basically hates everyone, she feels a special loathe for a group of rich and privileged girls in her class who, one day, decide to invite her to one of her meetings. It turns out to be a kind of witchy/murder cult where they transform bunnies into men. And from here, it’s just a what-the-fuck-am-I-reading after another. In a good way. I had a lot of fun with it, it’s witty and easy to read but at the same time it’s very confusing. Samantha is very unreliable as a narrator and there are quite a lot of thing open to interpretation. . Over all, it is a fun and sinister read. ✨Review✨ Cleopatra and Frankenstein by Coco Mellors . This is the story about what happens after the “happily ever after”, after the falling in love and all the mess that comes after that impulsive “I do”. Spoiler alert: it is not good. What I loved most about the book is how beautifully it is written. The main story is heart breaking and then you also get some chapters dedicated to secondary characters which I loved. All of them are so well thought out and I felt like their perspectives gave the story so much more depth. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I actually laughed a lot which I was not really expecting. ✨Review✨ We were Liars by E. Lockhart ⭐️⭐️ . . . It got it’s point across and had it’s moments where it made feel entertained. I will give it an extra star because I think I would have liked it more in a previous time of my life, definitely its a book written for teenagers but not very appealing to other demographics. I felt like the story was too easy, I just hated all of the characters and I could not feel a connection to the plot. . Idk if this is a spoiler but.. warning! There might me spoilers ahead. . There are moments where the protagonist intercepts short passages where she describes her family situation by writing a sort of fairy tale, but it was only redundant and (to me) quite boring. I suppose it was meant to be a metaphor but it was too obvious and repetitive. Overall, not my fave, as you can probably see 😅 but I didn’t hate reading it, I was just very unsurprised and untouched by the story. . ✨Review✨ The Dead Poets Society adapted by N. H. Kleinbaum . . . I read this one last year. I was in a used book store and when I found it, I had to have it. Now, I have to admit I was for some reason under the impression that the book came before the movie and I only figured out how mistaken I was by reading the book… it was a description almost frame by frame of the film I had seen so many times before. I’m a big fan of the movie but I guess I was expecting the novelization to be more insightful and give more information on what was goin on in the characters mind. But I fount it was just a description of the movie scene by scene. It wasn’t necessarily bad but it didn’t add any value to the story so I found it unnecessary. I gave it three stars because it is supposed to be just telling the story of the movie but it does so in a way that if it wasn’t for the movie, it would just be boring. . . What do you think about movie novelizations. ✨REVIEW✨ Lapvona by Ottessa Moshfegh ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ . . Spoilers . This book was a ride. At times it was physically uncomfortable to read but I couldn’t help but. Set in medieval times, the horrors described in this novel were unsettling, yet fascinating. Each character is on itself a contradiction between the most primal of a human being and the complexities behind emotion, morality and restraint. Villiam, the feudal lord of Lapvona was probably one of my favorite characters. And let me get this out of the way: he IS an asshole. BUT I couldn’t help but laugh when his scenes came around. Maybe I should check on that with a therapist. I ended up hating the protagonist, Marek as much as everyone in his life did, but I felt like he was such a good character, to me he felt alive. And most of the characters did for this story is FILLED with interesting points of view. I feel like im just rambling about how good this book is but I can only recommend you to read it.
