I just started playing Monark cuz I remembered I bought it last month and in just under an hour of playing I think it has a very good chance of giving The Caligula Effect a run for its money. It's got very similar vibes but I feel like Monark is already setting itself up to pop off harder than TCE, not counting the musicians' ending of course.

Meow? Meow meow meow?
(Petting you)
Oh yeah, for sure.
I've always been of the mind that mascot characters need to just be pets or like, just genuinely interesting characters.
Silly little characters very rarely get nailed and I generally just hate them.
I've only really liked it twice, and it's within Summon Night Swordcraft Story 1 (with Zantek as your companion, who speaks in star wars droid -esque fashion) in Monark with Vanitas (a high and mighty rabbit doll who has his attitude returned back to him by the cast)
I don't count x here, because her silliness is part of her immaturity which is part of her whole arc, which can't be said for the others.

Silly plays more Monark
Ok so like....without TOO MANY spoilers (gonna keep it vague as possible), got through the 2nd dungeon (well my 2nd dungeon, I think the game allows you to choose between 3 in any order but I’m not sure) which was the Envy dungeon. And.......I don’t think it’s perfect.....but Envy arc clears any of P5′s bosses except Kamoshida (cause Kamoshida is special), especially Strikers. And yeah there’s more in common with Monark and P5 than I realized, grant it I was getting used to Monark’s terminology in dungeon 1 (good god they dump it on you, wasn’t fun), and we were still getting introduced to concepts. I don’t know how much it has in common with SMT If (since they also do a deadly sin thing). But there is a good parallel between P5′s Change of Hearts, and Monark’s shattering of ideals. Other than that, gameplaywise AND character wise there’s nothing to compare imo. I like to call Nozomi “the better Makoto” (cause both are prez) or make parallels to Futaba with Chiyo and Kokoro (ones a little sister, the other is all knowing) but those are just me making silly connections, I’m not being serious.
The character writing/prose is nowhere near the same. The gameplay is obvie different completely different. I might conflate Authority with Persona, Pactbearer with Persona user, Monark with a contract akin to the Nahobino, Yoru as fucked up Igor, to make it easier since only Persona likes to take the good route of keeping things simple stupid. Basically......Their general feel is different. But what is similar is interesting to parallel. I probs wouldn’t recommend Monark if someone liked P5 cause of those big differences, unless they were craving the moral questioning side that P5 left them craving on.
ANYWAY, back to the boss, the reason I don’t compare it to Kamo is you are supposed to hate the very obvious villain Kamo. Kamo is simple and clean and straight forward. Envy is.......dark grey... it’s messy. It’s what striker’s tried to do but I think Monark did it better. I pity the villain, but he also needed to be stopped for obvious reasons. But it was a very messy situation and I really like it.
Envy was twisted, but you can really understand why they were twisted. You can agree that yeah, it’s unfair. But your actions aren’t good.
Ryotaro is probs the best counterpoint to Envy, cause while he is capable of pity/sympathy/empathy, he also marches to the beat of his own drum and isn’t a ashamed of it. He unabashedly goes by what he feels is right. Which can vary from situation to situation.
Which can be selfish, but it can be hypocritical. But so is the Envy boss. It’s messy, but in a thought provoking way (not in a poorly written way). And that is WAY more than what P5 could ever deliver for me.
I’m about to start the Wrath dungeon (I’ve seen whispers that some people side with Wrath so that’ll be interesting). But I’ll be fine if Monark peaked with Envy. It already peaked better than P5 in this case. Ok I’m actually half way through Wrath since I wrote that (so far still like Envy more buuuut....). Omg, yeah they do make this one grey too because like.......the victims are STILL assholes. It’s hard not to root for Wrath. “Like I know killing people is wrong buuuuuuuuuut-” (there’s also the benefit of them like...not being real that helps). Imo Wrath is a better Alice from P5S. Wrath I do feel bad for, and pity (ironically something they hate), Alice I feel skeeved out because she reminds me more of Kamo but with the game trying to make me feel bad for her and absolve her. “but Silly! They are different sins!” yeah well, both have a similar backstory. Both have similar motives. One just makes sense (revenge against the actual abusers), and one is being used as a means to manipulate us into feeling bad (aka Alice went BEYOND her abusers in some mental Olympic gymnastics I can’t fathom and we don’t really get to go into).
Monark’s sloth is more interesting than Strikers (I mean he’s dead). Mementos tho.....hm, we’ll see where Monark’s sloth goes. Might not be comparable, since Sloth is..... they might have gotten it because of how people perceive them. Or they are a bit slothful. Or both. It’s interesting.
Gluttony is bae, love them. I hope they get to shine more, and see their sinful side in action too (along with sloth).
Monark does better than P5 in the fact of Moral questions being raised. There is inherently a moral question raised by forcibly “changing a heart” P5 doesn’t like to dive into. Monark, so far is doing a better job at that. And they don’t change their Palace owner’s hearts, they destroy them bit by bit. And at least acknowledge that this probably means they aren’t the same person they were before that did that. Aka they acknowledge the sense of self.
tldr; Monark does better with fleshing out the Antagonists, one as someone I actually want to defeat because stakes (something only Kamo made me want to do in P5, both thanks to how NPCs are utilized), and as gray villains (when they want them gray, which I blanked on Pride but I don’t think he was grey) because the situation is fairly grey and while you want to defeat them you kinda.....question your morals a bit while doing so (might depend on who is playing it how strongly you question them, but that’s more than what P5 did so~!).
I’ll still be happy if Monark peaked with Envy (Wrath is still good), both are doing more work than P5.
One last thing before I jump back into the game. Vanitas the bunny is cute and I love him. I love how the localizers but a lot of effort into him too. He can be evil incarnate I don’t care, he’s baby.

"New Project Launch"
We, Team Noir, are a game team creating school RPGs that depict the dark side of the human heart and the charm of people who especially shine within darkness.
In Monark, the themes were desire and ego. Now, we are starting a new project based on a different theme.
We hope you will all support FuRyu's Team Noir.

More observations after completing Monark's demo:
You can tell this was made by people who worked on SMT because even the early battles will destroy you
Actually, the game reminds me of Persona 2 except instead of dialing your own number you get weird calls from the Otherworld.
I wasn't really listening to the music until the J-pop happened and then I was like "okay this is decent"
I am actually not annoyed by a mascot character in a JRPG. I really like how Vanitas' dialogue either rhymes or is alliterative (that must have been a pain in the ass to translate).
The enemy variety is skeletons. You just fight skeletons, which is boring. I mean I wasn't expecting much in the early hours of this game.
For some reason the devs thought we would love it if we had limited time to explore areas with enemies. Granted I didn't have a problem but I can tell this is going to be a pain in later levels.

i started playing the monark demo. middle school me would have loved this. look at this vroid ass 3d models they REALLY should have used the models in the op, fits the aesthetics so much better. lol look at these ps3 graphics.
thank you jp voice acting. of course theres an imouto. .wow out for a week and amnesia, another silent protag self insert character for boys with low confidence ho!
the animations are very bad.
mascot chara get!
i doubt the devs will do anything interesting about the juxtaposition of a desireless silent protag and the established worldbuilding of people gaining power the more desires they have but eh i can hope.
awww poor vanitas, they can have a little monologue, as treat.
did he put a cape over his school uniform?
combat is better than expected. i was dreading an action rpg but this is a turn based with tactical/positioning elements. im so used to fire emblem that its weird how i cant view enemy stats ooor more likely i just havent figured out how yet.
how did himata know that protag-kun collapsed on the 2nd floor if she was on the first?
i wonder why jingu is playing along, she's runs this school cant she just tell him no? and why do those two lackies sound brainwashed
why does that sentence have so many proper nouns?? what is this, elden ring!
chosen individuals of strong will, but you are extra special.
eh. if a pact creates ideal crystals why does anyone a atrong will creat alter-ego crystals?
this game pretty heavily uses the left joystick which is screwing me over since mine drifts HARD so i might have to change the control scheme. i would have liked an indicator for character that i havent talked to yet/have new lines because i cant remember and ended up talking to several people twice.
the just looks so bad lol. the character models are bad to begin with but they could have saved it with some lighting tricks (ex: fe3h has ok models but spices it up with the lighting effects), but no this game has really bad lighting that highlights the worst part of the character models. i get that its suppose to be gloomy with low lighting but you could have done that and made it look good.
huzzah i found the key visuals artist! so-bin on twitter!
one of the lead creators and script supervisors is a loud far right facist so this might be the last i talk about this game.

Penny for your thoughts?
I really don't like Mascot characters, by which I mean marketable non-standard characters.
Like, Teddie and Morgana von Persona suck, Aria from Caligula 1 sucks, Monokuma sucks, Sommie and Sothis from FE are pointless, I can't stand neco-arc (counting them anyway), Navi can stay but they're on thin ice, and so on and so on.
x/Key/chi from Caligula 2 and Vanitas from Monark are the exceptions to this rule in that I really like both.

"Care for a bit of difficulty?
"It seems the machine is providing some intricacies."
Vanitas, you're the worst. Stop ragging on Kamui when the small things happen, such as this vending machine decides to malfunction.
"Think of how to undo,
"Before you come to redo."
Unprompted Asks || Accepting
There’s very little that Kamui recalls, mainly just his name and a few likes and dislikes here and there by coincidence. However, he’s fairly certain he never really quite ever contemplated the thought of putting his life in danger, or the idea of murder. It is in this moment, a minor one amidst all the chaos he’s had to endure so far and in all honesty insignificant--That the Pactbearer finds himself considering all of the above.
After all the things he’s had to do and put up with within just the past week alone, he can’t even get a single can of soda out of a vending machine. As if to mock him, the damn thing got stuck as it was falling in between the plastic display and the rack behind it. To make things worse, he can hear the familiar low tone of his ever death-seeking lovable Monark.
Tumblr media
“....”
Inhaling slowly, Kamui finds himself strongly considering death as he comes to realize that was his last 100 yen coin. He considered himself to be a very patient man, despite all things considered even if the tolerance he’d shown within the 1st Year Building was the bare minimum--But at this very moment, there’s nothing in his reserves to stop him from grabbing the black rabbit by the ears, hard enough that you can hear fabric crunching.
“If I unzip your mouth myself all the way, will you fall apart?”

Yakudark
