I find little Machete being happy over bread baking to be so endearing, especially because I can imagine a world in which helping with baking was one of the few childhood joys he had (due to the lack of art of him happy as a pup), and then remembering the art you did months back of modern Machete making a souffle, I can see reincarnated Machete being drawn towards baking in his free time due to those residual feelings from his past life.

Tradition: Keepers of Ancient Manuscripts.
Jan Pařez takes care of three thousand rare handwritten books in the Strahov Monastery near Prague Castle. The oldest specimen dates from the 9th century. For almost nine centuries, the monastery of the Premonstratensian order has looked down on Prague from Strahov. And the local library, which is one of the most beautiful in Europe, has been operating for just as long. When most people hear its name, two wonderful historical halls come to mind - the younger Philosophical and the older Theological ones. The second one, which is captured in our introductory picture, was created in the early seventies of the 17th century. It is the oldest part of today's library, and as its name suggests, mainly church literature is stored in the shelves around the perimeter of the hall. For example, most of the northern wall is occupied by various editions of the Bible. These are valuable volumes, but the rarest specimens are hidden from the eyes of ordinary mortals.

Latymer explained how, when Anne heard that the smaller monasteries were to be dissolved, she instructed Hugh Latimer to argue in his next sermon before the king that the houses should not be dissolved but converted to better uses. Anne was not an uncritical supporter of monasticism: Latymer reports how she told a delegation of abbots and priors that they kept 'their gates close[d] from the preachers of God's word, and yourselves sit either idle or scarce well occupied in your cloisters, clean void of knowledge,' knowledge being here the correct evangelical familiarity with the scriptures. Anne's agenda was not dissolution but transformation: Latimer 'besought [the king] it might please [H]is [G]race of goodness to convert the abbeys and priories to places of study and good letters and to the continual relief of the poor.' Anne instructed her other preachers to include in their sermons 'continual and earnest petitions for the stay of the same.'
The Pilgrimage of Grace and the Politics of the 1530s (2001), Richard Hoyle

sakya monastery, tibet.
founded in 1073.
"Sakya Monastery houses a huge library of as many as 84,000 books on traditional stacks 60 metres long and 10 metres high. Most of them are Buddhist scriptures, although they also include works of literature, history, philosophy, astronomy, mathematics, agriculture and art. One scripture weighs more than 500 kg, the heaviest in the world. The collection also includes many volumes of palm-leaf manuscripts, which are well-preserved due to the region's arid climate." I‘m feeling strangely anxious, and not about maths. Rather my general anxiousness is increased by my lack of fear regarding the final maths exam. It feels so pointless and unreal. I just know already that I will not feel proud of my achievement if I pass. Then what‘s the point of succeeding, of doing anything really… I feel anxious because I am fickle and arrogant and my heart feels hollowed out. My imagination is so bright and fantastic that the world looks pale and bland, always. I want to be a reclusive wizard living in a wonky cramped castle with a magical garden and only mingle with people when they come knock at my door and ask me for help nicely (Then I would even offer my assistance for free). If that‘s not possible maybe I just kill myself

@westbrookwestbooks and I are massive bookworms and today we got to experience the Philosophy Hall at Strahov Monastery in Prague. It is a must do visit whilst visiting Prague and I’m so glad it was recommended to us!
It’s a bit of a way out, so we caught an Uber. Also a heads up, it isn’t disabled friendly at all, there are a lot of steps and to get to the library you have to go over cobblestone which my wheelchair struggled with, but it was worth the pain I’m now in.
These pictures were taken with my iPhone 14 pro and I have to say that I’m pretty impressed with the quality.

the thing is there is a Taejodae and a Taejo and a Taejong and a Goguryeo and a Goryeo and a Balhae and a Baekje (not trying to claim legitimacy by invoking each other just bad for me personally) and two separate prince uks (same dad) who both became posthumous kings after their son took the throne & one of those sons was the other one's grandson and i think the uk-uk progeny also married a bunch of maternal-grandpa-uk's grandaughters and so introducing McCune-Reischauer to my quest to untangle goryeo royal family drama has been an experience for me. translation is such a miracle and i am so grateful but also i'm crying at the club (interlibrary loan request form).

day 7/100 days of productivity
was happy to have the opportunity to work today in this beautiful environment (an abbey on a small island in the river not far from where I live). Didn’t finish with everything though and probably have to pull an all-nighter but that’s definitely worth it.
completed CW task 13, my addtional research as well as the five mandatory glossary entries
left the house and had some fresh air
drank my morning tea in peace and quiet (& alone)
did not have time to do any reading but spent some quality time with my younger sister instead; she is also in the picture above with her impeccable style… definitely a style icon… + she’s s great and ambitious study buddy ;)
take some deep belly breaths and drink enough delicious tea 🫖 ☕️ 🍃

take care xoxo
