Xanadu (aka Shangdu, Shang-tu, and Kaiping) located in Inner Mongolia, northern China, was first the capital (1263-73) and then the summer capital (1274-1364) of the Mongol Empire. It came to prominence during the reign of Kublai Khan (r. 1260-1294) and was famous for its palaces, gardens and waterways. Xanadu received lasting fame in the western world thanks to the Venetian explorer Marco Polo's description of it in his celebrated book Travels (c. 1298). The city received another boost in the popular imagination when it was made the subject of a poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834). Distant and mysteriously lost Xanadu, thus, came to represent a place of mystery, splendid luxury and easy living. Although only ruins remain today of the city, it is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Whenever people think of Mongolia, only one thing that comes to their mind and that is Genghis Khan and horses. Perhaps! It is because you don’t know much about the country or you either know nothing about it. But there is a lot to know about this beautiful land!! It was the largest contiguous land and the biggest empire at that time. Stretching across its wide plains, from Siberia to Southern China and from Korea to Ukraine. Mongolia has a great long history. So back in the 12th Century, before the Mongol Empire formed.

So back in the 12th Century, before the Mongol Empire formed. The Mongols lived in small, scattered tribes in the East Asian desert and Turkic pastoral nomads led by Khans.  At that time people of Mongolia herded sheep, cattle, yaks, and camels and they lived in tents and moved between summer and winter campsites.

Battle of the Kalka River, 1223
One of the most famous victories of mighty Subutai Ba'atar,  wherein he defeated a Rus'-Cuman-Qipchap force many times larger than his own (as much as 80,000 compared to 20,000 Mongols: though the numbers are likely exaggerated, the general idea of a greatly outnumbered Mongol force is correct). Traditionally dated to May 31st, 1223, there has been debate in the past over this date, Either May or June any year from 1222-1224. The reason is due to calendar system used by the Russian chroniclers, which provide different years. However, based off the confirmed dates from the campaign in Khwarezm and Jebe and Subutai's route through the Caucasus, a date of sometime in early 1223 seems most reliable. The battle itself, is so well known it almost doesn't need repeating, but we'll do it anyways. After and 8 or 9 days pursuit east from the Dnieper river, Subutai led the enemy enemy army to the Kalka river. Over the course of the week of pursuit, the larger Rus-Cuman-Qipchap force became spread out, so by the time Subutai turned his forces to confront, he could now face only sections of the enemy rather than the entire army. His horsemen charged the leading Galician and Cuman-Qipchaq cavalry as they crossed the Kalka, sending them fleeing directly into the oncoming Rus' forces, causing confusion, ruining their formations and allowing the Mongols to destroy them. The Galician leader, Mstislav the Bold, fled fastest to the Dnieper, taking a boat to escape and cutting the rest loose, ensuring the Mongols, and no one else, could follow him. The rest who fled were thus trapped in the open steppe against the horsemen of the Great Khan. According to the Chronicle of Novgorod, only 1 in 10 men returned from this campaign. Yurt
A yurt (ger in Mongolian) is a large circular tent made of wool felt stretched over a wooden frame used by nomadic peoples of the Asian steppe since before written records began. Yurts are especially associated with Mongol herders and hunters and were famously used by such figures as Genghis Khan (r. 1206-1227 CE). Made in various sizes and even sometimes permanently erected on top of carts for ease of mobility, yurts have become one of the identifying features of the nomads who still today carve out a living in the often harsh climate of the remotest parts of Eurasia.

1260 - The Mongol expansion had reached the Middle East, and their power enabled them to crush the established states up to the Holy Land. The Holy Land was being claimed by an Egyptian Dynasty with Turkic origins, and as such, would also have mastery of horsemanship and archery. Would the Mongols meet their match?

Welcome to a country of Genghis Khan, MONGOLIA. It's the world's second-largest landlocked country behind Kazakhstan and the largest landlocked country that does not border a closed sea. A nation bordered by China and Russia is known for its vast, rugged expanses and its nomadic people. Mongolia until now has been one of the world's best-kept secrets. Three times the size of France and with more horses than people, it is one of Asia's last unspoiled destinations. Genghis Khan, was the founder and first Great Khan of the Mongol Empire, which became the largest contiguous land empire in the world, the Mongol Empire. He developed the most advanced professional army ever seen in Asia. He was known as the most successful military commander, the world has ever known. . ##### 臉書: https://fb.me/tehhanlin IG: https://instagram.com/tehhanlin Flickr: https://flic.kr/vibranze ##### #mongolia #ulaanbaatar #genghiskhan #mongolempire #sony #sonysingapore #sonyimages #sonyalphasclub #sgheartmap #natgeo #natgeoyourshot #yourshotphotographer #hipaae #500px #bbctravel #cnntravel #tripadvisor #lonelyplanet #gettyimages #thephotosociety #cityscape #landscape (at Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBNvKAqHD1i/?igshid=71rzkfs5z4eu

STATE PALACE - INTIMIDATING OR INSPIRING?
The architecture of a parliamentary building usually reflects the culture and traditions of governance of a nation. In the summer of 2006, a new façade for the Mongolian State Parliament building was unveiled commemorating the 800th anniversary of the Great Mongol State. A seated statue of Chinggis Khaan occupies the center of the complex under a rectangular glass cupola supported by four white marble columns with gold capitals. Six more columns on both sides of the baldachin supporting windows in lieu of entablatures complete the central structure. Each side of the central unit are connected to fourteen more columns forming colonnades closed off by glass walls. Both colonnades lead to square loggias with smaller cupolas supported by ten columns each. They house seated statues of his third son Ugudei Khaan on the west side and grandson Khubilai Khaan, founder of Yuan dynasty, on the east side. A large open stairway in front of the central structure leads up to the monument of Chinggis Khaan. The inscription on his pedestal carved in classical Mongolian script reads, “The founder of the Great Mongol State heavenly ruler Chinggis Khaan”. Two warriors on horseback stand on both sides of the stairway. The architecture of this building with its new addition contains a wealth of symbolism that tell the story of how modern Mongolia came to be and gives an insight into the values that shape our culture.
