Сант | Orkhon River Camp 1/2
Selenge Amig
Mongolia | Монгол
23rd to 24th July 2023
NOMAD Science 2023 (Bioarchaeology)
Сант is pronounced as Sant.
We stayed here on our way to the Darkhad (3rd July) as well as on the return trip back (24th July).
The Orkhon was in flood on the return as a low pressure system had pushed down from Siberia and caused the waterways to flood quit a lot. Our original campground was completely underwater so we stayed on the high bank on the opposite side that night.
We had finished all of our alcohol on the last night so sharing that bottle of wine I brought in Мөрөн that day around camp made for some fun and excitement.
Storms were on the horizon that night with lightning flashing over the hills but that is as close to us as it got, the sky was mostly clear in the morning of our last driving day to Ulaanbaatar.

I’m delighted to announce that my photography series The Last of the Eagle Hunters has won another award. This time, it’s ⭐️GOLD⭐️ in the renowned reFocus Awards Black & White Photo Contest!
It’s beautiful to know that this series continues to resonate with viewers, while also immersing them in the world of western Mongolia’s nomads.
I’m so deeply grateful for the Judges’ support of this series, particularly given what icons they all are in the field of photography.
Thank you, team reFocus, for this honor!

Cait has been to Nepal as model for a photoshoot and saw the Everest. What she did say she'd want to visit is Mongolia. As for Sam, the Everest movie is dead. What he's looking to do is narrate an Everest documentary. Problem is, it's been done very well before to be worth it except to sell to his most ardent fans who buy everything he sells.
Dear Everest Anon,
She saw the Himalayas, from the lower mountain zone in Dhulikhel - not the Everest. That would be exactly the same thing as me pretending to see Mycenae from my terrace in Athens - same distance -, albeit I'll give you this: different topography.
Tumblr media
And yes, you are correct - still nasty, though - she has been to Nepal and found that watching the sun rise over those majestic mountaintops was a 'deeply spiritual' experience.
It's all in that January 2022 High Life magazine interview, while she was promoting Belfast, by the way (https://bahighlife.com/stories/outlander-actress-caitriona-balfe-reveals-her-favourite-travel-memories):
Tumblr media
I didn't have that quote seared in my brain, though and I remembered it just as I referenced it: a dream/bucket list destination, which is - mind you - exactly what her answer suggests.
As for Mongolia, which I suspect must be a very abstract place to you, this comes from an answer on X, back when she was still doing those cute #AskCait Q&A improv sessions:
Tumblr media
It took me five minutes to find it and I remembered it vaguely - Central Asia is a space I know very, very well.
The closest I have ever been to Mongolia - probably way closer than you - was on my Silk Road solo trip, in 2010. Ever since, Switzerland could never compete with the magic of Kyrgyzstan, especially when you wake up in your yurt in Tash Rabat to this view:
Tumblr media
This being very much akin to a Mongolian landscape, by the way. Serene and graceful and very, very quiet. And the people are warm, generous and have a wonderful sense of humor. It's only normal to dream of such a place, for a dream it is and nothing less.
So yes, your comment reads like globally correct, although I think your tone could have been more polite: we haven't been properly introduced, you and me.
But then you can't help yourself and spoil it all with your tribe's mandatory and gratuitous S hate moment. Many things have been 'very well done before' and yet they are still being presented, over and over again, just because life and the world change all the time: I suppose you are familiar with the concept?
You know what? Why don't you go to the Himalayas and do your own documentary project on it, Anon? Traveling will do you a hell lot of good and I will be your most ardent promoter.
Until then, which is probably never, I'll just watch his documentary or whatever he would choose to make out of it with great pleasure. You will still be in your armchair, at Clacton-on-Sea, or Weston-super-Mare, or wherever.

I'm going to ask you for LoCH trash answers! 10, 11, 14 and 16
ooooo LOCH!! :DDDD
10. what is the worst thing you want to become canon (character death, trash-ship, etc)
hmmm WELL I have always been fond of A-Heng Parrot Coma from 83. Which, okay to explain A-Heng Parrot Coma, we must first understand that Feng Heng (HYS's wife) is NOT 100% dead in 83 canon. Instead, she is just in a terrible coma that he has been planning to rescue her from in time for the JingRong wedding even for the past 15-16 years. And here he is, working hard to actually revive beloved A-Heng! Except! OYF invades the island to kill JingRong for #reasons and uhhh upon hearing Rong'er scream outside he abandons his wife to go save his daughter, screams like a demented madman while beating off OYF, and uhhh then has a bit of a mental breakdown about the now 200% dead A-Heng. For the record, Huang Rong thinks A-Heng is the name of her dad's beloved pet parrot who also died during this whole thing so she gets him another not talking parrot that she pretends is A-Heng to cheer him up. How HYS has not yet lost his mind and destroyed the island yet is ??? to me, BUT don't worry! there's more! Huang Rong discovers her mom's dead corpse and he has to tell Rong'er that actually, he was just a fucking lunatic who claimed mom was alive for all these years instead of telling Rong'er that she was dead, at which point Huang Rong has a meltdown and yells about how she HATES IT and would rather have just known THE TRUTH, and it's okay stop being deranged dad, lets actually bury mom all nice okay?
AS YOU CAN SEE this is my CATNIP I'm insane about this. I think it would improve the deranged HYS situation from the book if this were canonized. 83 HYS in general is just like the writer room's soggiest meow meow and they were all HYS apologists so canonizing their various antics would've been hilarious. 2 me. If we can't canonize the whole of A-Heng Parrot Coma, I propose we canonize that situation in 83 where HYS is trying to figure out where Rong'er is from Zhou Botong by asking him "where is my daughter???" and ZBT saying "oh how should I know where your daughter is?" to the whole audience of WYHL's ship. "You only have like, 10 thousand bastard hellions!" a situation that HYS is too deranged at the moment to disapprove.
11. what is your most sinful headcanon
my most sinful LOCH headcanon is actually proven in ROCH the sequel and that is that OYF and Hong Qigong should be shipped together. (For the record, they die laughing in each other's arms bc Qigong finally got OYF to remember who the hell he was again after several decades of insanity so I feel like this ship is already canon. To me. In my heart. It can't be disproven!)
14. What is ur crackiest crack ship
My crackiest crack ship is probably that Mei Chaofeng and Bao Xiruo should've been together. Maybe this would've fixed Yang Kang. And also let them leave WYHL behind. As is their right.
16. what is ur favourite ridiculous au
Hmmm this is something that @autumnslantern and I call "95% high school au" wherein most of the story takes place in the China part of LOCH, but I think it's definitely the situation where Huang Rong and Ke Zhen'e take an EXTENDED road trip towards Mongolia to find Guo Jing together because they're being chased by Yang Kang and OYF! Fun times!
:DDD thanks for the ask! I have lots of feelings about LOCH for sure.

James May, Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond in "Come what May!"
My longest comic about the Grand Tour so far ~♡ This time Jeremy, James and Hammond head off to Britain’s number one car show! Sadly heavy traffic and certain weather conditions give them a rough time on the road...but thank goodness it’s Friday!  *✦.°
All paintings, story and text by me (February 2022 - October 2022)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thank you very much for reading and I hope, as always, I could make you smile with it! ♥︎  This comic will be released as a real book together with my “The Long Way Home“ comic, my “Scandi Flick“ poster, more single artworks of the trio and a bit more in 2023! Please stay tuned if you want a copy of the book for yourself! ♥︎ I’d like to add the pre-release cover as well:
Tumblr media
A few words by the author (yeah, that’s me): This time my goal was to write/create/draw a sweet, funny, and heartwarming comic about the trio focused on a simple car ride. In typical fashion of all the comics I do, you won’t find any action based scenes or rude stuff (also I’m no native speaker, but you shouldn’t notice that while reading!). As a result the trio acts a lot nicer and definitely more helpful than in real Grand Tour episodes. The three guys have a super big place in my heart ♡ and because of that, once again, all I could create is something cute and adorable (I could never be mean to them!). Also not everything can be accurate, I have never been to James’s Pub, the Diddly Squat Farm Shop, inside Jeremy’s car or at a car show myself. I had a few reference photos, but 90% of this comic is drawn by memory and how I imagine environments. Anyway, I still hope that I got everyone in character, recognisable and enjoyable for you to look at! Stuff you might have missed:
On the outside of Jeremy’s farm shop you can spot Sansa and Arya, who were puppies when I started working on this comic, so I kept them that way…I am always happy when I spot a photo of the two on Jeremy’s Instagram! ♥︎
Actually everything in that comic takes part in the past, as I was working on it way too long...
Jeremy explains that it’s lucky to turn right at the start of a journey. Of course it’s from the Grand Tour Mongolia Special.
The numberplate on Jezza’s car is a pun on "Jeremy Clarkson 1 Diddly Squat Farm", in case you haven’t already noticed. I thought that’s funny.
James talks about fish finger sandwiches, he posted about them on his Twitter and FoodTribe accounts several times in the past and it’s a really nice and easy dish I like to eat as well!
The CDs in Jeremy’s glovebox are "Supertramp - Crime of the Century", "Yes - The Yes Album", "The Who - Who’s Next", "Genesis - Seconds Out", some album by Eric Clapton you cannot read and "Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon". Despite my age, these are all albums and bands I absolutely love and I think he does as well. ~♡
I had to make something up for the broken air conditioning, something like that is always happening on their journeys (especially in James’s cars!). I’m sure after the events of the comic, it was completely fine again! ^◡^
They always take photos of themselves sleeping and post it somewhere online, this time it was my chance to draw a scene of that! I enjoyed working on that one! Hehehehe...
Jeremy and James’s painful high-five I got from the Grand Tour Colombia Special
In James’s Pub Hammond gets served Spag Bol (yeah, I have this from "Oh Cook!") and Jeremy ordered the infamous fish pie. The reason why I’ve chosen two different meals is that Richard doesn’t like fish, a running gag I keep constant in all of my comics. Also it can be taken as a reference to "The Perfect Road Trip".
James’s apron I spotted in "Lochdown", I think it really suits him! ♥︎
And this time there’s even a moral of the story: Don’t drink and drive!

In the Navy
Mongolia is the second-largest (by area) landlocked country in the word, after Kazakhstan. And that's really not fair to Mongolia, as Kazakhstan borders the Caspian Sea, which is also bordered by four other nations. Mongoli, unlike Kazakhstan, has little reason for a navy, as there's virtually no possibility of the nation engaging in seafaring warfare. (Uvs Lake is one tiny, tiny, tiny exception -- the 1,300 square mile/3,350 km^2 lake has a tiny point in Russia, but that'd be an unlikely place for a battle to break out.)
But Mongolia has a navy. A very small, mostly silly one.
Pictured above is the Sukhbaatar III, a tugboat. It is the flagship of the Mongolian Navy -- a title it has earned in no small part because it is the full complement of the nation's armada. And you'll note that, despite Mongolia having no meaningful aquatic route to a neighboring country, the Sukhbaatar III is sitting in the water. It's stationed in Lake Khovsgol, the nation's largest body of water by volume, itself in the northern part the nation and not too far from Russia -- but still comfortably and entirely within Mongolia's borders.
The tug is operated by a seven-person crew which constitutes the entire navy. That's right, the Mongolian Navy has seven sailors and a tugboat. That's it. And amazingly, it gets even stranger. According to Neatorama, only one of the seven know how to swim.
Historically, the navy served an actual purpose, small as it were. When Mongolia was under Soviet rule, the naval force transported oil from the north of the lake to points south and west, as conditions warranted. (The lake freezes for a few months every year.) A trip across the lake by boat takes about eight hours, and going around the lake (by horse -- there are no roads) takes four days, so in some sense, having a lake-bound navy made sense.
But that's less and less true now. These seven sailors aren't much of a military force, but they're increasingly less of an economic one as well. Not only do they not have any way to steam into battle -- unless someone invades that lake, that is -- but budget cutbacks have required the crew to obtain part-time work shuffling goods and tourists around the lake's coasts, and making ends meet is a challenge.

September 11…..
We left the National park this morning and traveled back to Ulaanbaatar. On the way we stopped at the Grand Circle Foundation’s “do good” project and toured the facility. It was a really nice building of classrooms, library, coffee shop and playground for underprivileged children partially funded by those who travel with OAT. Back on the road to our hotel and a free afternoon. We immediately beelined it for a burger at “Black Burger” where we had eaten upon first arriving. The rest of the day Sandy, Reggie and I spent shopping!! No luck for me Karen. We met in the lobby at 5:00 for our home hosted dinner. We were broken up into 3 groups and sent to the homes of locals for dinner. Apparently OAT does this on all of their trips. I’ve had some good and some bad over the years but this one was really great. Lovely family, excellent food and lots of laughs. It turned out that this family owns the company that OAT contracts to for setting up everything for us here in Mongolia. They own all the ger camps we have been in and the vehicles we travel in. When we got back to the hotel we went up to the bar for a drink and then to bed!!! Love and miss you all. Diane, I hope your getting better.🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

A bald eagle arrives to steal a perch on a tree log that offers a strategic view of the shoreline at the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve in Alaska. When other eagles drag freshly caught salmon in from the water, these bystanders swoop in to take a share. "Hours of observing their patterns and behavior helped me capture moments like these,” says photographer Karthik Subramaniam, a software engineer with a passion for wildlife photography. There are around 4,500 salt wells terraced into the hillside at the Salt Mines of Maras in Peru. The archaeological record shows that salt extraction likely began here before the Inca Empire, perhaps as far back as 500 AD. Today that tradition continues with the families who own wells, each of which produces some 400 pounds of salt per month. “The salt wells receive water through channels sourced by a salty underground spring nearby and once the water evaporates, the crystallized salt remains,” says An Li, who captured this picture. “Here, a salt miner is using a wooden rake to extract the salt." Asiilbek, a nomadic Kazakh eagle hunter, preps his golden eagle, Burged, for a horseback hunt in the grasslands outside of Bayan-Ölgii, the westernmost province of Mongolia. The eagle’s training begins when fledglings are captured from their cliff edge nests and taught how to hunt for hare, fox, and even deer. The tradition stretches back 3,000 years. “For this image, I was lying on my stomach in the prone position looking through the electronic viewfinder at the edge of the stream,” says photographer Eric Esterle. “The ground shook as Asiilbek's horse passed less than a few feet away, splashing me with ice cold water. I remember covering my camera with my body and putting my head down.” Photograph By Eric Esterle

Sometimes a sleepless night is key to great photography. At approximately 3:40 a.m. on a frigid summer morning, photographer W. Kent Williamson snapped this image from Tipsoo Lake in Mount Rainier National Park, Washington. From across the still water, he could see a line of headlights as weary climbers approached the peak’s 14,411-foot summit—the culmination of a multi-day climb. "The night sky was unusually clear, and the Milky Way could be seen just above the mountain,” Williamson says. “I was surprised to see how bright the climbers’ lanterns were.” Photograph By W.
