Magic The Gathering x Final Fantasy - Spoiler Season Part 2 (10/05/2025 - White and Blue cards)
So the debut stream has happened and I have a lot of things to cover. In this part, I'll be talking about the mono colored White and Blue cards. We have a good amount to talk about, so let's get into it! We'll be going White first and in order of rarity, so common > uncommon > rare > mythic rare. Let's start with White Mage's Staff and a new mechanic: Job select.
Tumblr media
I had already talked about this card in the starter kit leak (which we now know for sure is legit). So, uh... I'm just gonna copy-paste my thoughts, since they haven't really changed. Small spoiler for Hero token art, since that hasn't been shown yet: So this is the start of a new type of equipment for this set, the "Job select" equipments. This mechanic works similarly to Living Weapon or For Mirrodin, except instead of creating a black 0/0 Phyrexian Germ creature token or a red 2/2 Rebel creature token, it is a colorless 1/1 Hero token. The hero tokens of this set seem to just be based on the FF14 character races, as we saw an Au Ra depicted on one and a cat person behind them (possibly a Miqo'te from FF14), though I could also imagine FF11 might get some representation with its races.
Anyways, to cover the equipment itself: this is solid. 2 mana for a 2/2 Hero Cleric that gains you 1 life when they attack is pretty good and even after they get destroyed, the equipment is still there to be equipped to someone else for 3 mana. This might see use in incremental lifegain decks as another way to pump up an Ajani's Pridemate for example. I'm not blown away by it, but it will do its job. Also works with the party mechanic where you need a Cleric, a Rogue, a Warrior and a Wizard.
As for the art. Credit to Kim Dingwall. Link to her ArtStation. That sure is a nondescript White Mage in front of a nondescript golden circle. It is very nice art though, genuinely I really love it and kind of wish this was a creature instead. Also love the magic effect being so gentle, as is common for healing effects in a good amount of fantasy. I love this art, it's very nice. Just wondering with the nondescript golden circle is, I don't recognize that.
Let's talk about another card that was leaked in the starter kit: The Crystal's Chosen.
Tumblr media
This is definitely meant as a game ender in heavy "go wide" strategy decks. 7 mana is steep, but the pay off is huge. 4 2/2 (since they also get the counters!) colorless Heroes alone is not bad, but getting +1/+1 counters on all other creatures you control means you can suddenly do like 30-40% more damage and that can genuinely end a game. To be fair, as it should for 7 mana. Solid, but not ultra reliable. Mainly good in Limited or Commander to end games. This will not see play in 60 card format games, it is just too steep a cost to justify using it, especially at risk of a counterspell.
As for the art. Credit to Kotetsu Kinoshita. Link to their Twitter. This is a great piece of art. Seeing all the Onion Knights before the crystal, as they have been chosen. I just love this, this is fantastic. I also love how the light is almost overwhelming, which feels apt for a crystal of life altering destiny. Also a good detail that the Onion Knights are color coded, which they were in the original as well.
Next up is yet another card spoiled by the starter deck leak: Dragoon's Lance.
Tumblr media
This one is purely saved by its mana cost. 2 mana for a 2/1 Knight Hero with flying on your turn is just alright. The second you have to re-equip this, this will feel significantly worse. Only real thing I can imagine is that if the flying is the difference maker between winning and losing, but otherwise, very mediocre equipment. Does get better if you are able to cheat the equipping cost, but even then... eh. You have better ways of getting flying, so unless you really need the Knight subtype on a creature...
Credit to Josephine Chang/Jo Cordisco. Link to their BlueSky. This is very nice art. It is definitely a nondescript Dragoon posing somewhere in what I do believe is Ishgard, just based on the surrounding buildings. It's a soft coloring, broken up by the harshness of the blue dragon aura surrounding them. The background is also very nice, if a bit... well, I hate to use it this often with the Job select equipment, but nondescript. The building definitely make me think of Ishgard, so there is at least something!
Now, finally, a card that I haven't talked about before. Let's talk about Aerith Gainsborough
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Very quick for color flavor: did you really think Aerith was gonna be anything else? At most she would've been Green/White, but she was always gonna have White in there. Red might've been an argument, but she isn't really as chaotic as Red characters usually are. Also doesn't help that she is definitely the dedicated mage for a lot of the game, specifically the white mage for a lot of people.
Anyway, let's get to the card's mechanics. 3 mana for a 2/2 is below rate and to a point it does kind of hurt. 3 power and 3 toughness is an important benchmark and she hits neither without help. Speaking of which, she has Lifelink and she gains a +1/+1 counter every time you gain any amount of life. That's nice and allows her to be on rate or above rate the turn she enters, provided you have ways to gain life.
Then her final ability. When she dies, you put X +1/+1 counters on every legendary creature you control, where X is the amount of +1/+1 counters on Aerith. So first, of course she has a death trigger. Secondly, this soundly places her to be best in a legendary tribal deck, where most/all your creatures on the board are gonna be legendary and benefit from Aerith.
So, how good is she? Eh. Aerith is not bad, don't get me wrong, but she is below rate and even more so, she is slow to start to get growing. As your commander, she will feel like just an extra thing in your already existing mono white legends decks... which is nice, but ultimately just an extra thing. As something in the 99, she will feel better, since she is just part of a (persumably) legendary tribal deck, allowing her to grow easy, then be thrown to the wolves or sacrificed to put counters on all other legendary creatures you have. This also does make her a psuedo protection piece for your legendary creatures if someone wants to get rid of them via damage or stat based removal. Just need a way to sacrifice her at instant speed.
For 60 card formats... hate to say again and again, but she's too slow. Again, she best supports legendary tribal, which is an uphill battle to begin with in 60 card formats that are best when playing repeating cards, at least a bit, which legendary creatures do not jive with much. So she doesn't feel like she will have much of a place in 60 card formats.
As for the art. Credit to Nakamura 8. Link to their pixiv. Very anime, but not in a bad way. It is the scene where Aerith gives a flower to Cloud in Midgar. Very nice art honestly, bright in all the ways it should be and Aerith herself looks great. Not much for details on Aerith, she is relatively simple, but she still looks great! Just overall a great piece of art.
As for the alternative art:
Tumblr media
Credit to Syutsuri. Link to their Tumblr. This... somehow is a bit less anime. It is the exact same scenario, just without the background... sigh. Anyway, I love this one a lot. I think the slightly less wide open eyes and the shading just does a lot for Aerith. That said, no background makes me enjoy it a lot less, so it's a give and take. Still great art though.
And now for the last White card shown off today: Cloud, Midgar Mercenary.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mr. Strife's 3rd card. Alright. White as his only color feels wrong. I suppose this is to contrast against Sephiroth's card being mono Black, but I don't know. It just feels wrong.
Anyway, moving on to his actual mechanics. 2 mana for a 2/1 is slightly behind rate and not ideal either, but you can manage. Then his ability:
When Cloud enters, search your library for an Equipment card, reveal it, put it into your hand then shuffle. This is obviously good, you get to search for any equipment. Go for a lot of equipments in your deck and you will never have a lack of target to search.
As long as Cloud is equipped, if an ability of Cloud or an Equipment attached to it triggers, that ability triggers an additional time. The part of Cloud's ability triggering multiple times mainly impacts if you are playing with ways to give him abilities, like Backgrounds in commander, in your deck, but that's not super relevant. The fact that all abilities on equipment trigger twice definitely makes you want to pivot specifically into equipment with triggered abilities. Stuff like Sigiled Sword of Valeron or Inquisitorial Rosette will make twice as many tokens (...so two).
And that's it. Just immediately: equipment based have always struggled in 60 card formats, so don't bother with this card in 60 card formats. For commander though, Cloud can be an excellent equipment based commander or part of the 99 in a equipment deck. Being able to tutor an equipment every time you are able to put Cloud on the battlefield is very nice, though definitely don't slack on running protection based equipment on him if he's your commander. If he is your commander, you probably want to go voltron with him, though probably with a sprinkling of ways to make equipment costs cheaper, since this Cloud notably doesn't have anyway to make equipment costs cheaper. So good card in commander, absolutely not worth it in 60 card formats.
As for the art. Credit to Kazto Furuya. Link to their Tumblr (they haven't uploaded in years). Cloud looks on point, the sparks aren't distracting and the background is simple, while still being detailed enough to make out that this is somewhere in Midgar, probably towards one of the reactors. Very good art, not much more to say, I really like it!
As for the alternative art:
Tumblr media
Credit to Maji. Link to their Twitter. This sure is Cloud. No background again. Very detailed and shaded Cloud. It is quite nice, I like it. Feels like it could've been official art for the Remake honestly, which is just a good thing. Also makes it hard to talk about it, since it is just me going "yeah, this is good." But yeah, this is good!
Onwards to the Blue cards! First up, FFXI gets a card with Dragoon's Wyvern:
Tumblr media
A 3 mana 2/1 is certainly behind rate, though Flying is nice. Also, I lied, it is actually a secret 3 mana 3/2, since you also get a 1/1 colorless Hero token when it enters. It is not a bad little common, good for token synergies and even as an evasive early attacker.
Also, just need to point this out: I'm not gonna talk about color flavor too much for things that aren't characters. Blue is here because the wyvern is blue. That's it.
As for the art. Credit to Jason Kiantoro. Link to their ArtStation. This is a very cute wyvern! I love that you see the person's whose wyvern it is in the background. Aside from that, not much to say for the background other than it is nice and colorful. Great art!
Moving on to Ice Magic and our second new mechanic of the set: Tiered!
Tumblr media
Let's go over Tiered first. Tiered is a variant on kicker, but where kicker does a thing and then does an additional, usually different, thing if you kicked the card, Tiered becomes a modal spell. You can just cast it for its base cost to get an effect, then you have 2 additional costs to pay to get the effects listed in them, but you can only have 1 effect of them all. This is to simulate the magic in Final Fantasy being... well, tiered. The base spell is the weakest form, then the -ra suffix gets added and it is the medium level (usually) and when the -ga suffix is added is when it is at the strongest level (usually).
As for Ice Magic itself. Instant speed spell, so that's already nice.
2 mana to get an Unsummon effect.
4 mana to make a creature go back to the top or bottom of player's library, the creature's controller chooses
8 mana to shuffle target creature into its owner's library.
So, just to say immediately, this is definitely behind rate for the equivalent effects. For example, actual Unsummon is 1 mana while Stay Hidden, Stay Silent is 8 total mana but split between 2 effects of the Aura entering and the activated cost, while this costs 2 mana and 8 mana respectively. That's because the flexibility of this card needs to be taken into account. It is definitely playing it safe a little bit, but the flexibility cannot be understand. Early game, you might only be able to Unsummon, but late game, this is a card that can do any of those, while Unsummon is still just Unsummon. Overall, I rate this card to be fairly good. It's not mind blowing or will be replacing anything in your deck most likely, but it is a solid little common instant card.
As for the art. Credit to Masateru Ikeda. Link to their Twitter. Hey, it's Lulu from FF10 and her plushie! She is casting a big freaking ice spell at something. Aside from that, not much to point out. The art makes it very clear that this is a big freaking ice spell coming someone's way and that's perfectly fine, it still looks great!
Now we're immediately going to a rare. It is time for FF16 with Jill, Shiva's Dominant and Shiva, Warden of Ice:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Blue for Jill makes sense. She is a calm, solitary person. I suppose, if anything, there might've need to be some White splashed in, since she is fiercely loyal, but Blue makes sense. Also, she's Shiva's Dominant... so yeah, Blue was practically inevitable.
As for the card. A 3 mana 2/2 is definitely behind rate and nothing to really compensate for it, like Flying or something. She does have 2 abilities:
When Jill enters, return up to one target nonland permanent to its owner's hand. Unsummon, but for any nonland permanent. That's pretty dang solid, allows you to mess with an opponent's artifacts and enchantments as well.
For 5 mana and tapping Jill, she transforms. Only at sorcery speed. Let's talk about Shiva, Warden of Ice.
Shiva, Warden of Ice is a 5 mana 4/5. That's very slightly below rate, but no longer that it really matters for thresholds. She is a Saga, so let's talk about her abilities
At lore counters 1 and 2, you target a creature and that creature cannot be blocked this turn. Good to get some guaranteed damage in, especially if that creature has a "deal combat damage to a player" trigger.
At lore counter 3, you tap all lands your opponents control, Exile Shiva and return it to the battlefield as Jill. This is... evil. Mass land denial is big, since you can use that turn it goes off to make the final play. The only issue is that because lore counters get added during the start of your main phase, they can tap all their lands for mana and have that mana to play with to disrupt your way to get play your game winning push. Then you can do it again.
It does have to be noted, for this transformation mechanic you will be dealing with summoning sickness for every time you transform to one or the other, since both start in exile, then get brought into the battlefield as a new "instance" of that spell. However, that also abuses enters the battlefield effects, since it does count as entering the battlefield. Just to be noted.
As for the entire card. The front side is painfully mediocre. The nonland permanent bounce effect is good, but her just being a 2/2 for 3 mana is rough. The back side is better, but still has issues. You are only capable of using that 4/5 statline for 1 block and 1 attack or 2 blocks in 1v1 formats, since she exiles herself at the start of your main phase when she gets her 3rd lore counter. That said, all the abilities are pretty damn good, so no complaints there. For commander, she could be a fun addition to the 99 of a stax deck. As the commander, she definitely still goes stax-y, but I don't think she does it well enough that you want to consider it, especially since you're stuck in mono Blue. Admittedly, that is a stax color, but still. Definitely have ways to protect her, because that 3rd ability on Shiva is telegraphed and will be the the reason why she will get removed.
For 60 card formats... hmm... I think her main body is fine enough for 60 card formats, but her transformation is too slow. At best you'd have her on the battlefield turn 4, so you can immediately flip her turn 5, but even then, you're waiting for turn 7 for tapping all lands, which isn't great. I'd probably say she is too slow for 60 card decks, though she might be a decent tempo piece to just draw out something from the opponent due to the inevitable threat.
Now for the art. Credit to Arif Wijaya. Link to his ArtStation. The backgrounds are a bit simple perhaps, but they still look quite nice. The spell effects are beautiful and not too overpowering. The ladies look fantastic. Just a very quick review, since my opinion on both are essentially the exact same. This is just great art, absolutely fantastic.
As for alternative art:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Credit to Rika Suzuki. Link to their Twitter. If you told me this was official FF16 art, I'd believe you. This is a 10/10. The ladies look perfect. Only thing to complain about isn't this art's fault, but rather the fault of the alternative arts not having backgrounds. Genuinely no notes, these are awesome.
Now to briefly talk about Y'shtola Rhul again. I already reviewed her and I have edited the post with her regular arts. Link to that post here.
With that said, that's it for this part! Next part is just Black cards, because some silver haired prick needed to have 4 versions and be a flip card. One of those is just the extended art version, but still. Anyway, before I lose my mind: thanks for reading and have a nice day o/

We open our promised trek to Sandopolis Zone with Sonic once again being dropped off on the Floating Island by Tails, who laments that no one else is going with Sonic. While Sonic insists that he’s the only one fast enough for this mission, I’ve read enough of these stories to know that the actual reason is that he has a massive crush on Knuckles and doesn’t want anyone else around while he trades insults with his rival
Tumblr media
As covered in the last few issues, the Freedom Fighters have delayed but not prevented the Death Egg launch, a fact that Sonic knows all too well. I can’t imagine he’s keen on being a sitting duck while he knows that Robotnik has such a dangerous weapon near completion
Tumblr media
And it looks like Sonic’s gotten his wish - not the badnik attack, but Knuckles turning up to trade insults with him (and hopefully be more impressed with Sonic’s skills than he was in that one Poster Mag issue)
Tumblr media
I know it’s because that’s the expression he had in his early art and this is the visual reference they had at the time, but it always looks like Knuckles is giving Sonic a kind of amused smile when he looks at him like this. Fond, one could say. No, I’m not taking these shipper goggles off
Tumblr media
I’d say you got more than a little delayed by the Marxio bros, Knuckles. I’d say you got six whole issues worth of delayed…
Tumblr media
I love when Elson draws Knuckles with that surprised face that gives him the mono eye
Tumblr media
But let’s move onto a villain who I’m much happier to see the return of - Captain Plunder! As the footnote says, we haven’t seen him for quite a while, but I’m glad to see him back and up to his old pirate-y ways. Looks like him and his crew have recovered from their last encounter with Sonic, too
Tumblr media
Very recently, all of Mobius had to be like, “Oh shit, we were wrong about the Floating Island being a myth”, but Captain Plunder got to be like “Oh shit, I was wrong about the Floating Island being a myth and I have a treasure map for that place”. So he’s decided to make good on that, along with the newest member of his crew, some professor guy. And while Knuckles isn’t happy about yet another member of Sonic’s rogues gallery trying to find their fortune on his island, Plunder doesn’t take Knuckles all that seriously
Tumblr media
After tinkering around with the ruins, the professor finds the lost pyramid. And the preview text gives us a hint to how well this is probably going to go for them

Types of decks I have in playable states:
Buried Alive -- Anowan the Ruin Thief rogue tribal precon that mills you, Black/Blue
Gilf of the Seven Seas -- Admiral Brass Unsinkable pirate tribal precon with minor upgrades, Black/Blue/Red
Big Angels Get Bigger/Go Big Go Home -- Giada Font of Hope built of scratch bulk and angel tribal, mono White
Dickdickout -- Evie & Jacob Frye commanders assassin tribal built entirely from spending too much on packs because I love assassin's creed, Blac/Blue
Not-So-Liliana/Good Girls Go Bad -- Liliana themed zombie tribal recursion deck that switches between Zul Ashur Lich Lord and Ghoulcaller Gisa until I can get a Liliana commander (Liliana lands, cards with Liliana on them, cards of Liliana's servants, Liliana box, Liliana sleeves- you get it), Mono Black
Bloody Bloody Mess -- Vito Thorn of the Dusk Rose blood tokens, vampire tribal & the first deck I built (with revolving commanders), Mono Black
You Know What They Say About Big Hands -- Syr Elenora the Discerning card draw to get as big of a hand as possible, not tribal, Mono Blue
Unyielding Loyalty -- Sidar Jabari of Zhalfir knight tribal knight recursion that I haven't played all that much, White/Blue/Black
Walk The Plank -- Adewale pirate/assassin tribal vehicle deck, Black/Blue
Sucks To Be Me I Guess -- Jeskai precon, Elsha Threefold Master & Shiki ans Narset Unified, Blue/Red/White. Funny thing about this one is that you can choose only one of the two possible commanders, and because I am indecisive, I roll a dice to pick one before each game
Decks wip:
Desynchronization -- Aveline de Grandpre deck full of the random green asscreed cards I pulled in that made dash to make the asscreed deck, Mono Green
Publick Affairs/Babygirl Deck -- Piper Wright Publick Reporter clue deck but is also full of other fo4 cards like Nick Valentine and Curie, Mono Blue
Bleeding Effect -- Desmond Miles just with a bunch of my copies of assassins that I couldn't put into Evie & Jacob or Adewale, Mono Black
Flashflood -- Shao Jun that's more like both versions of the same commander cuz I can't pick the art I like and a dream, Blue/Red

For project 1, I've landed on deciding between BOUNCY and LOATHE for my two words. I wanted to choose a word that would have a well known connotation and have certain concepts affiliated with them. For example, the word Bouncy is associated with jumping, springs, and small items that move quickly but still have strength and energy. Furthermore, the word loathe (in my mind) has always had a negative, sour idea to it that represents dislike and in some instances hatred. In a more specific example, the author of the Series of Unfortunate Event stated in the first book that loathe was his favorite word, further enforcing the idea of a sour word under the pseudonym Lemony Snicket.
I hoped to solidify my own creative representations of these ideas but, unfortunately, I misplaced my previous art materials and have to purchase new ones in order to move forward with my own application of these ideas, so I have no original sketches or designs to show (for now)
In order to further foster ideas of words with defined connotations, I tried to find logos and images that were visually linked with the ideas they were conveying through either typographic design or word choice to determine what concepts were represented.
In my 6 photos-
Outspokin Bicycle's usage of making the I resemble a bicycle wheel (FONT: GOODLIFE)
A U Haul Logo utilizing wide lettering to show depth and structure to align themselves with a representation of large and qualified moving trucks (FONT: BRILLER BLACK)
The album cover of Lemon Boy by Cavetown to show both the bitter and sweet contrasting nature of lemons (FONT: HVD STEINZIT)
A logo for Ghost Oil using a clear and minimalistic design to reinforce the light and simple quality of their hair product (FONT: UBUNTU MONO BOLD)
A seltzer water logo from Trader Joe's (a substitute for the hand drawn Trader Joe's Lemon Stand Label that I failed to take a picture of) that has a variety of green and red to match the cranberry and like flavoring (FONT: ROGUE SANS MEDIUM)
and a ceramic shop logo emulating the whimsical nature of the Mad Platter referencing the theme and characteristics of Alice in Wonderland. (FONT: TBD)
Hopefully I will make fruitful progress this weekend in sketching and will produce something that I can work with to create something worthwhile.

Adventures in the Forgotten Realms Commanders
Due to circumstances I won’t get into at time of writing (don’t worry it’s mostly good) I’ve been forced, dragged over, and required to actually fucking read all the new Commanders from Magic’s newest set, Adventures in the Forgotten Realms. I’ve only recently gotten deeper into D&D, I don’t know who like any of these clowns are (except Tiamat, obviously).
Also due to circmstances beyond my control (that are less good but understandable) my Commander night has been called off and I don’t get to play with my shiny new Cabal Coffers. It’s a bit sad, and it means I want to get my fix elsewhere.
What better way than to combine these two and just write about every AFR ‘mander? That’ll pass the time. There’s like, what, 30? I can manage that if I’m quick. Let’s get into it.
(No I’m not doing the precon cards I haven’t been staring at those all week)
Acererak the Archlich
Tumblr media
The way I see this guy going is one of two things. You either do infinite Venture by making him free (not too hard in Black, what with Heartless Summoning, Carnival of Souls, etc.) and have a probably fine combo commander. For the record, infinite Venture does kill your opponents flat-out, BUT only because of Lost Mine of Phandelver’s Dark Pool room, and only if their life totals are lower than your deck count because you’re going to be drawing it in the process. That shouldn’t be an issue, but you never know.
The other option is just playing him fairly, which requires completing Tomb of Annihilation, and you just have a kinda mid Stax commander I guess? Eh.
Asmodeus the Archfiend
Tumblr media
This Devil is clearly trying to echo prior Demons like Griselbrand and Vilis, but I’m not sure it’s going to be successful- if only because the mana investment means it’s a lot slower. And if he gets killed when you don’t have B up? Blown the fuck out. Add in no evasion and this is a God I’m happy to pass on.
 Barrowin of Clan Undurr
Tumblr media
Okay so this is kind of like Alesha, in less colours and more mana, if you manage to complete a dungeon. And there aren’t that many dungeon cards, so you’re probably playing some bad ones to make up for it. This is definitely a 99’er in that Esper Dungeon precon, and certainly not a commander.
 Bruenor Battlehammer
Tumblr media
In an attempt to solve one of Boros’s problems, Bruenor saves you a bunch of mana on equips and makes shit like Argentum Armor substantially more playable. He also gets kinda fuckin beefy with even just a few on him, hitting that 7 no matter what the first one is and 11 not long after. As far as Boros Boys go, you can do a lot worse!
 Delina, Wild Mage
Tumblr media
Didn’t we just get this card? Like, in C21? This is harder to make busted than Rionya, but it is cheaper and works with legends, so fair call. There’s not enough “advantage” dice mechanics in Red, certainly, so you can’t go probability-mad with this, but it’s pretty decent value. It also happens to be a Shaman, so it works with that new MH2 card, and that’s fun.
 Drizzt Do’Urden
Tumblr media
This guy has a lot of potential, and for added bonus, he has a cat! A lot of the cards that are good in this are the ones that are good in, say, Varolz, but honestly if you just want to play Selesnya Beatsticks then Drizzt might be the way to go. Can’t play him in Cats, though, unless you want to lose Kaheera, so.
 Ebondeath, Dracolich
Tumblr media
Yeah I don’t think this one was for this format? I mean it’s super recursive, and probably a really good candidate for a Homicidal Seclusion/Deadly Wanderings deck. I think we need one or two more of that effect to make it actually playable, but I still like the idea.
Wait why isn’t this fucker a skeleton? WoTC Pls.
 Farideh, Devil’s Chosen
Tumblr media
Look, I tried. I really tried, but there really just isn’t enough to make Farideh work yet. At least in black-border, as I think she’s probably one of the best silver-bordered commanders printed in a minute. A shame, because I sure do enjoy Tieflings, and the effect is legitimately solid if you can trigger it consistently.
 Grazilaxx, Illithid Scholar
Tumblr media
While I imagine it’s a perfectly solid commander in their own right, basically Mono-Blue Edric but not group-huggy, where this is going to really shine is in Ninja decks. Holy shit, this is so nutty for those. Honestly, ETB decks in general are going to like them, because the choice of either taking damage and letting them draw or letting them reuse a powerful ETB is pretty tough. I like everything about this, except the art, because I’m not into tentacles no thank you.
 Gretchen Titchwillow
Tumblr media
When Strixhaven came out, I thought Zimone was going to be the most boring Simic commander we’d ever see. But here comes Gretchen to outdo them.
Look, Simic can do good designs. Even at uncommon- Imoti, Moritte, and Eutropia are all super interesting in my opinion. But Simic being just draw and lands has become a meme, and I’m sick of it. Extremely so, for three main reasons- one, it’s boring, two, it’s been all over the place since WoTC decided +1/+1 counters being their only theme was bad (and, fair,) and three, it’s good.
Gretchen is the most boring card in the entire set, in my opinion, and I sure hope she isn’t a cool character in the lore because that’d be such a waste.
 Hama Pashar, Ruin Seeker
Tumblr media
There are 21 venture cards in Azorius, and some of them are even good. Most of the Room effects are pretty minor, however, save for some of the endgame ones (and copying Cradle of the Death God is pointless, Atropal is legendary), so copying them isn’t actually a huge amount of value. I’d still play this in Esper Venture, but I don’t think I’d build around it.
 Icingdeath, Frost Tyrant
Tumblr media
While this clearly isn’t built for this format, equipping this dragon with it’s own tongue is kind of a hilarious idea. You could do worse for Voltron decks, I guess, and in the 99 it’s both a thing to slap equipment on and an equipment itself- like a flying (and weaker) Halvar. Eh? I just wish the token wasn’t legendary- like yeah Flavour but this effect gets a lot worse when you can’t recur it. It’s rare that someone goes out of their way to kill an equipment that isn’t super busted, so Frost Tongue is probably hanging around for a while anyway.
Man, it feels awful if they bolt this one, huh?
 Inferno of the Star Mounts
Tumblr media
Okay this is fucking cool. It’s a Shivan Dragon with haste, and that ability is probably pretty feasible to activate- keep in mind Braid of Fire and Neheb and the like are in the format- and combined with a swing will just kill someone. In fact, when I saw this, my brain immediately started looking for ways to shrink it, just so you can get multiple 20-damage wallops in a turn.
…there aren’t very many. But still! Even if you can’t get to 20 multiple times in a turn, getting to 21 once or twice is pretty good!
 Iymrith, Desert Doom
Tumblr media
The fourth of our dragon cycle, because hey, it is Dungeons and Dragons. Iymrith reads basically identical to Dragonlord Ojutai, but without White- and for that kinda control deck, White is pretty nice to have. Iymrith can draw you more cards than Ojutai, but only if you’re low, in a blue deck, in Commander, so. With that said, a deck that just loads this with cheap auras/equipment might actually be pretty good, since they can load you back up on cards and keep the Voltron flowing, so, maybe? I’d honestly consider it if I didn’t already have Mono-blue Voltron as a deck.
 Kalain, Reclusive Painter
Tumblr media
Okay this is super interesting. He is, unfortunately kinda fighting with the RB precon face, Prosper, for the new RB treasure deck, but for an uncommon there’s a fair bit going on here.
Actually, wait, is there? I thought about this for another couple seconds, and I don’t think this card actually does that much. It’s one treasure, and it benefits you a little bit for doing something you frankly don’t really want to be burning treasures on? Like it probably plays a mean Marionette Master, but everyone does that.
There really aren’t any other RB Artifact commanders, though, aside from Prosper or a partner deck. So ehhhh? Why are more people playing this than, like, Bruenor?
 Krydle of Baldur’s Gate
Tumblr media
That’s a lot of words that don’t actually do a whole lot. I like the second ability, but Commander and especially Dimir aren’t hurting for evasion options. This is probably pretty good in Rogues, but that deck has a de facto best commander now, so. If this came out like, five years ago, it’d be kinda hype, but not anymore.
As an aside, I do kinda hate it when they just print a Tribal commander (or anything like this) that’s just miles and miles better than every other commander for that archetype, like with Anowon 2 or Edgar Markov or Anje Falkenrath. Wait….those are all vampires…….
 Minsc, Beloved Ranger
Tumblr media
Shivam Bhatt did a fucking excellent breakdown of this character’s lore on twitter, which I recommend reading- the history of D&D’s lore is fucking wild. As it is, this seems like a pretty fun Naya commander- there’s plenty of creatures that get way better if you make them large, even if targeting Boo seems kinda pointless.
Also, I need someone to explain to me why the “Top Cards” on EDHREC for this guy right now are, like, all combo cards.
WAIT NO FIGURED IT OUT, unlike Marath he doesn’t say X can’t be 0 so you can use him as a sac outlet, for fucks sake people.
 Nadaar, Selfless Paladin
Tumblr media
Hey remember all the things I said about the WB and WU dungeon cards? I mean, at least this guy could theoretically complete the dungeon on his own, but Mono-White is even more restrictive for what you could get, so. At least he draws a card every so often. And that anthem isn’t even remotely worth it, at all.
 Old Gnawbone
Tumblr media
Green eating up more of the colour pie, I see. Now to be fair, I’ve pondered Mono-Green artifacts for a while, and this is probably a better leader for that list than Oviya Pashiri (but…I like her….), but beyond that I’m not sure what you’re doing with this. I guess people playing Sakiko because they think she’s actually good and not because they like her have a new commander.
This is fuckbusted in the 99 of like a million decks though. So there’s that.
 Orcus, Prince of Undeath
Tumblr media
That…is so much mana. In a colour combo not especially great at garnering lots of it. The second ability scales fairly well, and it is a decent body on its own, but I don’t think this is going to be a particularly popular commander. Like, you have to pump 6 mana into this just to get a 2-drop back or to Infest the board? And that’s just the first time you cast it? Nahhhhh.
 Oswald Fiddlebender
Tumblr media
Artifact Pod? Yeah, okay, sure, that seems reasonable at two mana. Keeping this mono-white was a good idea, I can’t imagine how insane this’d be in blue. I’m no artifacts expert, I’m no pod expert, but this has to be busted, right? Like surely there’s an easy way to infinite this? Someone with more brains figure it out for me, but either way it’s still a bunch of value and also a tutor in the zone.
(convert two random 2-mana rocks or wellsprings into Basalt Monolith/Rings of Brighthearth, okay that’s a good start)
 Shessra, Death’s Whisper
Tumblr media
…ehhhhhhh. Okay, so, it’s a significantly worse Deathreap ritual in the command zone, and also a terrible Lure effect. Along with the flavour words on this taking up much more space than necessary, making the effects look much bigger and better than they are. Would it have hurt to give this deathtouch? Make it trigger on every end step? Lure more than once? I dunno, this just seems painfully weak to me. We’ve had an overabundance of Golgari commanders recently, to be fair- MH2 had 3, and before that was the enemy focused Strixhaven/C21, but that’s no excuse for this to be such trash- just look at Bruenor.
 Targ Nar, Demon-Fang Gnoll
Tumblr media
I hope you like Gnolls, because that’s gotta be the only reason you’re playing this. Hello Tuya Bearclaw/Syr Faren/im sure a bunch of other boring commanders, this is another one of you. This looks so bad next to the Gruul precon (which is apparently somehow the first Gruul precon) and, well, every other RG general from the past couple years (save, again, Tuya Bearclaw). Even the fuckin Walking Dead guy is cooler than this.
 The Tarrasque
Tumblr media
Disappointment part one over here is at time of writing the only commander from this set with a fat zero decks. Considering there were like 10 commanders at that number when I last checked, people are clearly trying out the set, so The Tarrasque being abandoned is particularly sad. It just…doesn’t do anything? It’s the fucking Tarrasque, and it doesn’t have trample, or a fear ability, or anything? Ward 10 is cute, basically being hexproof unless they have infinite mana (or an uncounterable spell), but really? I want more than this idiot for my 9 fucking mana commander. Ugh.
 Tiamat
Tumblr media
I believe I’ve talked about Tiamat before, when she got spoiled, but I can’t be arsed finding that and dredging it up. I’m still disappointed, basically, especially since I’ve now read her statblock and know what she actually does. They could’ve given her a cool ability per head like Cromat, or had her recur like she does in the lore, or something. I genuinely would have preferred if she was an Emrakul-style massive game-ender (with a no-reanimation no bullshit clause) than this. How utterly meh.
 Trelasarra, Moon Dancer
Tumblr media
This is literally just Ajani’s Pridemate but Selesnya and in the zone. Also you scry. Sure? It does also have two relevant creature types I guess, and they’d probably be good in a Soul Sisters deck. But it’s not like Selesnya was hurting for Lifegain commanders- this is basically just Lathiel but much leaner and voltron-ier.
 Varis, Silverymoon Ranger
Tumblr media
Wait you can’t even play this in Esper Venture, fuck. With Flash effects, you can start clearing dungeons well quick enough, but like, for what, a Wolf? And these defensive keywords aren’t getting you anywhere either. Blegh.
Side note- I’m a big fan of tokens, and collecting various token arts, and I was extremely disappointed when I found out that the Wolf token from this set is just…the Zendikar one again? They didn’t reuse the 3/3 Angel or the Goblin or even the Zombie, why just that one? Something must have happened behind the scenes here.
Also….Silverymoon? That sounds like shit.
 Volo, Guide to Monsters
Tumblr media
Hey, I know you, you’re from that one book. As much as Anti-Tribal sounds fun, I’m pretty sure this just turns into generic Simic value. Copying things is fun, I suppose, though not working with Legends hurts. I also appreciate that this supports playing a bunch of weirdo cards or ones that have fallen out of favor because they have more unique creature types- Anphin Mutineer, Acidic Slime, and Diluvian Primordial all seem like a lot of power here.
That said, is anyone ever letting this fucker stick around for a turn?
 Xanathar, Guild Kingpin
Tumblr media
Hey, I know you, you’re from that one book. This card is completely awful to play in webcam-commander, so it’s a good thing we’re all getting vaccinated, right?
So this is UB Gonti, I guess? And also unironically not the worst combo commander, since it stops people from playing spells on your turn in a very White-like effect. Add in some Lantern-style effects and you can get a real stew going with this guy. He looks like a lot of fun- and I’m sure he’ll end up popular as a result. Well, that and being on the cover of an expansion book gets you a lot of notoriety.
 Zalto, Fire Giant Duke
Tumblr media
Our final card, our final Venture card, and the only red one. So, uh, there are literally 4 other Venture cards in mono-red, and at least one of them is complete dogshit, so I can’t imagine this being very good. Also, it’s an Enrage trigger on a 3 toughness 5-drop? Far from ideal. I guess it’s a 7 power trampler for 5, but that’s kind of faint praise to damn with. Maybe if someone makes 5C Venture, or if Giant/Barbarian tribal feel lacking, then this guy can find a home.
Shoutout to the exactly one person who built this deck, by the way. I see you, Elder Demon Highlander, and your 100ish views on your deck tech.
And that’s the lot of them. Honestly, a lot more misses than hits, but that’s perfectly okay by me. 30 legends in a set is a lot, not to mention the 12 from the precons, and we’ve had so many actively playable legends recently that I’m fine with, like, half of these being trash. Trash is more fun anyway! Get yourself a fuckin Varis, why not.
Okay but seriously though who’s biting the bullet and building Tarrasque first? It’s not going to be me.

Guide to the Zodiac: The Sylph of Space
The major element of creation is love, and the major action of love is Art.
-Laxmi Prasad Devkota
Names & Epithets
The Auxiliatrix; The Godmother; Mother Sun; The Lady Grim, Bloody Mary / Bloody Maryam (derogatory); The Center of Creation; She Who Unfurls; The Speaker at the Beginning of Days; The Midwife to All Living; The Queen of All Countries; The Jade Woman; The Rainbow Drinker, the Bromeliad.
Symbolism
The Symbol of the Sylph of Space, written instead of her name, is ♍, the sign of Virgo.
The Sigil of Space is a six-armed spiral.
The colors associated with the Sylph of Space are black and white, and her sacred color is jade green.
Other symbols associated with the Sylph of Space are fangs, frogs (which she may be carrying or seated on), locks, needles and thread, prisms, rosaries, scrolls, stars, and the sun
Appearance/Portrayal
The Sylph of Space is seen as a young or middle-aged woman, with jade eyes. Her skin may be gray, like the other gods, or luminous with the most brilliant white. One of her horns curves straight back, and the other folds forward to form a sharp hook.
Like the Witch of Life, the Sylph may be depicted as pregnant, but this is rare: for all that she has a world-creative role, she is rarely portrayed as the “genitive element,” in that sense. She may appear symbolically with six arms, or six limbs, especially where her worship is conflated with the Thief of Light.
She is always seen wearing the most fashionable clothing, whatever that may mean in any given place and time, and there is such cultural variation in depictions of her garb that images of the Sylph are reliable aids in dating ancient artwork. That said, she more often wears bright colors than dull.
Domain/Associations
The Sylph of Space is generally associated with transformation, light, art (especially fashion), and motherhood. She is one who enables creation, who forms the nurturing environment in which grows culture and civilization itself. She is a supportive goddess, kind when she can be and firm when she must.
Through her association with light and the sun, the Sylph of Space illuminates the dark, spreading warmth and forging connections between those who are isolated and alone, whether they are individuals, towns, or whole planets. Her role in this is sometimes entirely literal.
The Sylph of Space is a patron of midwives all over the universe, a calm and healing hand in the creation of new life. She is just as well-known as a patron of art and artists, enabling creation of a different sort.
The nature of the Sylph’s connection to transformation is more mysterious, but most scholars agree that she has both gone through great transformations and allows others to do so. She is thus associated with amphibians, most often frogs, which must go through transformation to become their true selves. Sometimes she is depicted as creating, protecting, or even being a frog-pond. This is usually understood less literally than some of her other roles.
Major Holiday(s)
Croakmas may be the most important day of the year. It is certainly the most commercialized. Whatever particular version of the creation myth you subscribe to, Croakmas is the celebration of that creation, the reputed anniversary of the universe’s birth in most cultures.
To celebrate the Sylph’s role in the act of creation, celebrants catch frogs and then release them. Oceans, or at least very large lakes, of ink have been spilled in fighting the debate over whether toads are an acceptable substitute. There are also, of course, various rules which must be observed (e.g. if the frog is one which looks after its young, like the African Bullfrog, then it cannot be caught while it is protecting them). In large cities, one can mark the season by noting all the small businesses that pop up in late summer selling caged frogs.
Following frog releases, some cultures give frog-themed gifts, while others throw feasts, throw parties, or just throw gobs of brightly-colored paint. This is an especially common celebratory practice in Sweden and regions of the United States with Swedish immigrants, and may have inspired the secular game of paintball.
There are technically twelve days of Croakmas, but the twelfth is the most important. You can often judge a person’s religious fervor by noting how many Croakmas days they observe, but sometimes people just like the festivities.
Croakmas is one of the most popular days of the year to get married. The other popular candidates are any holiday celebrating the Rogue of Heart.
Churches and Cults
Outside of the Zodiac Church, the most popular religious institution worldwide is undoubtedly the  Birthlight United Congregation, which focuses on worship of the Sylph and the Knight. In their sacred texts, they identify the Sylph as the generative mother of the universe, not midwife as is canonical to the Zodiac Church. In these depictions, it is the Knight who ‘midwives’ the birth of the universe, and, together with the Sylph, generates the other nine gods from the universal placenta, turning the blood into light and passing it through a prism.
It is sometimes said that worship of the Sylph is the oldest worship of all, even though archaeological evidence to this effect is debatable. Nevertheless, “Neo-Sylphism” and “Reconstructed Mono-Sylphism,” to name a few variants, are a growing religio-philosophical system all around the world. At this point, it can sometimes be rather difficult to classify any particular manifestation, given how the Neos and Reconstructeds and so forth have all cross-pollinated each other so thoroughly.
Some cults connect the luminance of the Sylph with the domain of the Thief, and claim that they are sisters, or lovers, or even the same being entirely. This is considered heresy by the Zodiac Church.
In the early part of the Twentieth Century, painter and mountaineer Edward Crowley published a series of (what he claimed were) dialogues between himself and the Sylph of Space. To prove their authenticity, he offered up a letter which had been allegedly written by the Sylph; a few people who are known to have been familiar with the Sylph were able to view the letter and vouched for it, but the letter was later lost in a fire and modern handwriting experts and theologians are divided on whether it was merely a good forgery. L. Ron Hubbard, who is more famous for his naval career, was also a high priest in the Order of the Jade Dawn, one of many offshoot religions that Crowley’s writings inspired.
Prayer and Worship
People pray to the Sylph for safe childbirth, and for healthy children, but not for fertility. She does not generate; she facilitates. The Sylph is also prayed to for inspiration, for healing of the body and mind, and for internal change.
Prayer to the Sylph almost always takes place under well-lit conditions, sunlight if possible. It is common for churches focusing on the Sylph to maintain community gardens along their southern wall, where the sun is brightest, a place both for prayer and meditative cultivation. Others set up frog ponds, for similar purposes. It is a common aspect of folklore that if one sees a frog while praying, then the Sylph is paying particular attention to you.
Lore
It is occasionally said that, if the gods created the universe, it is the Sylph who created the universe most of all. Sometimes she gives birth to it, but more often she midwives its birth, pulling it wailing and damp, and warm and new from wherever it came from. This ‘wherever’ varies by tradition. The Zodiac Church claims the universe’s providence is an egg, other groups claim that it was pulled from a deep pool of water, or from an earthen jug, or from a damp cave, or from the stomach of a huge dead beast.
The Sylph is usually understood as a moderating force in the pantheon, keeping peace between factions. She is a force of reconciliation, and is slow to anger. Just as well known, however, is the ferocity of her wrath, on the occasions that her anger is elicited. Enemies of the Sylph rarely get the chance to cross her a second time.
The nature of the Sylph’s transformative aspects are, as previously stated, somewhat controversial. It is well-known that she can change color and can emit light from every inch of her body, but why only she amongst the gods is capable of this is unknown. Some claim that this is a sign of ‘rebirth,’ a self-cleansing metamorphosis that is somehow more pure than that undergone by other gods. One heretical claim is that she herself once had the form of a frog, or toad, or other unsightly creature, and transformed into her current shape through the power inherent in creating the universe.
Public Relations
The Sylph is one of the most outgoing of the gods (some even say, the only god to enjoy their own divinity). She is a patron of the arts, and makes frequent public appearances.
The Sylph’s involvement in art, however, is more than simply donations of wealth or influence. She maintains two well-known, highly-selective ‘artist colonies,’ one in China and one in New Zealand, and though they are mostly run by her disciples, artists who have lived there claim to see her in person relatively frequently.
The Sylph is entirely responsible for faster-than-light travel: wherever the Sylph goes, space is bent slightly, and if she traverses the same route many, many times then space there will be warped severely enough that an ordinary traveler would find their progress greatly hastened. When it is time for a “mature” civilization to join the intergalactic community as a full member, as Earth hopes to do in the next couple of centuries, the Sylph goes back and forth, faster than the eye can track, until a new route is added to the network.
It is an unfortunate fact that these routes must be maintained, and the Sylph does not spend all her time knitting galactic civilization together, so the Sylph doesn’t draw a direct path between every set of two worlds. It is enough for each world to have a direct path to several other worlds, and indirect paths to all the others.
Some scientists believe that there are other methods of faster-than-light travel, but the gods are united in their position that Earth will undertake no research in such a direction until it is mature, and the reason is clear enough: even a very basic understanding of how secular FTL could work is sufficient to show that FTL travel means FTL weapons . With that understanding, it is forbidden by the gods that any being from Earth travel permanently off-planet. Some fortunate chosen of the Sylph of Space have seen the worlds of distant galaxies, but none are permitted to stay there.
