Into Thin Air (1/4)
Chapter 1: Without Control
Your name is Roxy Lalonde, and you are about to break your employment contract.
You, however, have decided to pray to the Sylph. You need to talk to her about fast-forwarding the timeline for humanity's interplanetary travel. Specifically, whether you could get functional, self-sustaining colonies in other star systems some time in the next few years.
The punishment for breaking this contract is termination, and you are 98% sure that this does not only mean termination of employment. You've always been on good terms with the gods, but you still know you may be putting your life on the line. But so many other lives are on the line as well, you would have to be unbelievably evil not to do it.
You're shaking. You kneel down and open your mouth to speak the words of the prayer, but before you can pronounce a single syllable, a goddess appears. It's not the Sylph. It's the Seer, her face split by sharp smile.
Your heart skips a beat and you make a strangled sound, but she waves her hand airily. "Take a seat. I'm not here to kill you."
"But," your voice is strained. "I-"
"You haven’t done anything yet. And mere intent is not, in itself, a crime. Usually. I’m not going to execute you for your data excavation escapade, either.”
You swallow. She knows about that, already? It was only a few hours ago that you'd hacked the corporate server, digging in as deep as you could go, drilling past one firewall after another, unraveling encryption after encryption. You'd found that the endgame for SkaiaCorp, as a company, is to create a virtual reality program that has an effect in real, living reality, that blends the two until they are indistinguishable, and eventually empowers its users to create an entirely new universe and rule it as gods. The only casualty would be the Earth itself.
You're so afraid that you feel sick from it, and along with that, you're shaking with rage. The company you've worked at for five years is engineering the apocalypse, and you've been bamboozled by the living gods themselves to help it along. You want to throw your computer monitor at the Seer, or throw a broken bottle at her, or maybe just throw up.
The Seer's smile is opaque. "So, you know about the Game. That's inconvenient."
Inconvenient?? You can't believe it. You are going to do an acrobatic fucking pirouette off the handle. You are going to let her have it.
"How could you do this to us?" you shout. "To the entire world?"
"You're angry," the Seer observes, nodding and still, infuriatingly, smiling. "Understandable, given the circumstances. I’m going to save us some time by issuing an abstract of this conversation: You are going to call me insane, cruel, terrible—plenty of unkind things,” she says, counting them off on her fingers. “You will also express despair and horror that your planet will be destroyed. You will tell me that I should be ashamed, that I should apologize for involving you in such a vicious, evil project. Et cetera, et cetera.”
You clench your fists and consider striking the Seer, but the goddess holds up a finger. "You have not yet committed a capital crime, but be careful, lest I find you in contempt of court,” she says, and you remain still. “If I allow your rant to continue, your volume will build and you will talk until your voice becomes hoarse. You will probably cry. In conclusion, it’s nothing that I haven’t heard before.”
You can't bear this, even with her threats looming over your head. You open your mouth, but she interrupts. "Feel free to say everything you were going to, or just call me juvenile names if you prefer. I won't stop you. But you will hear me out, first," she says. There is no room for argument.
Then, the Seer explains. There's no point trying to stop the Game. It's already happened. Your own existence is proof of that, and your divine origins. Fell from the sky on a meteor. If you stopped now, you'd create a paradox, and what then?
"How long do we have?" you ask, finally, voice ragged.
"Sollux projects that the Game will be completed in sixteen years. Aradia says that, between an unusually sticky bug in the code and a freak hurricane that disrupts a critical part of the supply infrastructure, it will be complete in seventeen years and four months.”
Seventeen years. "What if I quit?"
The Seer tilts her head. "You are entwined with this project, and integral to its success. The only way to extricate yourself from this scenario would be to die. Even so, that will only create a doomed timeline. Since you like computers, imagine our timeline, including our future, everything from the beginning of this universe to the completion of the Game, as a program. If something goes wrong—like your absence from the project—then the program crashes, restarts from the last viable saved state, and tries again.”
Your shoulders drop. "So, all of humanity..."
"All on earth, anyway, yes." The Seer pauses. "The... last time that the Game was played, the results were apocalyptic. Only a handful of people survived. But there were unusual factors involved in that case. If we moved some humans off-world, then they would survive. However," she continues, before you can speak up, "you must not speak of this to the Sylph. Transplanting your entire species is untenable —suffice it to say there are reasons we have forbidden off-world colonies to humans until you have developed interstellar travel for yourselves— but she will not see it that way. Unlike the creation of the Game itself, the fate of humanity is not written in stone. But if you don’t trust us on this—if you so much as insinuate to the Sylph—then rather than saving some of your people, you will lose all of them.”
Your name is Roxy Lalonde, and you're hungover. You are hungover because you drank last night.
You can't believe it. Nine years sober. Nine years. You wrecked it, you awful excuse for a functional human being. Nine years you were sober. Why, why would you-
Oh. Right. Now you remember why.
The world is ending in seventeen years and change, and you're helping it end.
You close your eyes against the light and groan. Gods, this hangover sucks.
Well, you're still here! Not dead. So this is the choice you made.
Your eyelids are not enough of a shield against the bright sunlight streaming through the windows of your home. You put a hand over your eyes. Still not enough. You turn your head into whatever furniture you happen to be laying on, and moan miserably into the sticky upholstery. A scream would be more apropos, but any loud sound is too much right now.
You need to get up. You have responsibilities. You need to feed the cat. Your forehead is making a... crinkling noise?
With great reluctance, you reach up and remove the piece of paper taped to your forehead. Whose idea was that?
Well, it's written in code, so it's probably yours. At least that gives you something to think about other than the end of the world, your headache, and your overall grossness.
The code isn't too hard to break, but now it somehow makes even less sense.
saggy has the awnsers u want
Well, that's dumb. Who or what the hell is a saggy?
Dumb, stupid, stupid. Your name is Roxy Lalonde, you feel like absolute shit, and this stupid note isn't helping.
Well, you'll think about it another time. For now, the world is going to end, and you feel like... you feel like a drink.
You pour yourself one.

i like 2 brushing past shoulder or waist i feel like you could do something really soft with davekat
i know you sent this so long ago and im so so sorry but i wrote. something! ish. its set in the aspec aspects verse if that sweetens it any
the prompt meme
Dave comes unfurled like a night-blooming cereus, impossibly slowly and only with an incredible amount of patience. His spines are sharpened with years of hypervigilance and distrust, and pushing against them only hurts him and you. Instead, you just have to wait until he's ready to bloom.
It takes millennia for him to trust anyone other than Rose. In the beginning, they were inseparable in every sense of the word, so tightly fused that it was at times impossible to tell them apart. They were prickly and nervous and it took ages for you to crack that shell, to slowly coax the two of them into trusting you with themselves, and then each other. And even then, trust was a tentatively crafted definition, full of clauses and rules and lines that you didn't dare overstep. It takes much longer for Dave to feel comfortable.
It starts with little things. He sits close to you when you're alone, tentatively testing the boundaries of your space. His alternates are more daring, flickering in and out of him like shadows as they reach for tiny pieces of contact. Sometimes he's more brazen with it, feigning a level of casualness you don't think he feels as he claps your shoulder or elbows you. It takes work to convince him that it's okay- subtle work, because if you ever called him on it directly he'd shrivel and die in your hands.
When Rose holds your hand for the first time- just a quick squeeze, just to reassure herself of your presence- he quickly and eagerly starts to seek your hand all the time. He blames it on his vision, saying he likes to know where you are, but you think he just likes to know that you're there.
It's slow. It's so, so fucking slow, getting Dave to accept that the world won't end just because he reached for physical comfort. It takes even longer for him to accept it from you, to start trusting you enough to override his initial and instinctive nerves, jumpy at the sign of anything that isn't Rose closing in on his space. But slowly, he gets there too.
In the modern day, you sometimes find it difficult to reconcile how Dave started with the clingy creature you've turned him into. He plasters himself against you like he's reserved the right for the rest of infinity, and gets offended if you brush him off, so certain in his entitlement to your person that it actually shocks him when he can't hang off you for ten minutes. You'd find it irritating if you weren't so fucking proud of him for coming so far, or so desperately in love with him that you really do love it.
When you reach for him, he never flinches anymore. You touch him without thinking, now, a gentle hand on his waist as you slide past him to reach something else, and he glances over his shoulder just to see you, pulsing warm affection your way like candle wax melting. A phantom kiss presses against your cheek, cold like a whisper, and you find yourself fighting a grin, ducking your head to hide the heat on your face as you push forward.
It took time, and patience. But god, he is so beautiful when he blooms.

Of course I can freaking forgive you!! I feel a little appreciated myself being responded to with this much care.
I am also glad you feel so welcomed, I’d feel bad if you weren’t. Give yourself a little more credit because that fic is amazing. I can imagine how long it takes to write it given how much it is there haha.
Your other fic, metempsychosis, was really good too. I love godstuck settings, you have no idea. You obviously haven’t been updating that one for obvious reasons but I just wanted to give that some appreciation as well.
Haha this is very sweet!! Thank you very much! I just feel bad whenever I have to take extra time!! I am trying not to worry so much anymore!
But also!!!!!!!! Thank you that fic is like, my secret pride and joy, though obviously a side project! It's been a lot of fun to shape, and figure out this fake little world I'm working in, and coming up with silly reasons for just. God shit LOL. working with a pantheon that does not exist, in an abstract way, but in other ways they are literally just kids! it's a lot of fun! :) Obviously yeah it's on the back burner a little while i chew through some rng stuff but!!!!!!!!!! it is beloved and i am clenching my half-finished chapter draft in one hand, haha!

Audio
“Found you!” Rose laughed, with an impossibly loud voice, one Dirk could hear all the way from the second highest tier. Dirk saw the tiny specks of workers running away from a tentacle that lashed out and crushed the nearest dock in twain. The Sea King threw her arms up towards the sky.
“Dave! To me!” she screamed. “Let’s dance!”
He hovered in front of her, on the broken piece of dock, like he had been there the whole time. His cloak, rotted and ancient, unfurled, and beneath he held two impossibly broken swords. His hands, and everything else, were wasting away. The Dead King at the height of his power stood ready to attack the city.
When they sang, their voices echoed over The Floating City like a battle horn.

So I recently binged the entirety of @oxfordroulette ’s piratestuck/godstuck fic The Four Kings, The God Thief and the Black Diamond Pirates and have absolutely fallen in love, each chapter has a customized sea shanty and I just adored this one from chapter 20.
Hope you like my voice!

WIP Fic Whenever: A Passover Story
WIP Fic Friday is a place where I will put a ‘quick and dirty’ first draft of either a short story or a chapter from a longer story. This will hopefully encourage me to improve my writing output. I missed last week… oops. This is from the “The Gods Have Horns” setting.
There are words on the wind. You hear them, spoken. Prayers. Your name.
And you are the Page of Breath, so you give them Breath. You can break their chains, and open their doors. Only you. The mortals love you. They love you. You offer them liberty. You lift the downtrodden, and help them to topple tyrants. You follow the whispers of Breath in your ears.
You feel, in a way, like you’re actually important. The feeling swells as the centuries pass, and turn into millennia.
------
The people who came from the east are suffering. The hot sun. The burn and bleed of the whip. The sorrow, the hunger, the ache for a better life. They are slaves, and they are calling to you, from the desert sands, voices echoing through the dust.
You make landing by the river, and you walk through the town. A guard at the slave’s quarters sees you, and mistakes you for a child before he realizes that your horns are real. He is fearful, but you simply move past him and blow open the doors.
“Your freedom, is yours, if you want it,” you say, to the huddled mortals within.
They don’t move.
“Do you know who I am?” You reach out your hand to them, and smile. “I am the Page of Breath. Don’t be afraid, I won’t hurt you.”
They don’t move.
“pLEASE, cOME WITH ME,” you say. You are the Page, and you can’t force them to do anything, only give them the opportunity they need to seize their freedom themselves.
“We can’t, Page,” speaks up one woman, finally. “We are bound.”
“Take off your bindings,” you say. “They are nothing, like air. You can stand, with me, if you try.”
“We cannot,” says the woman. “We are bound by Blood.”
You have to let that sink in, a moment, before you realize what she’s saying. The wind whips up as you call your aspect, you reach towards the mortals- and you can feel the bonds, like heavy rope, tying them to this land, to the King who commands them, and, in thick clotted strands, to the Knight.
You could break them. It would be within your power to simply rip up Karkat’s curse like spider’s silk, but it would probably kill the mortals to do so.
You realize, that is something you could do. Charge in like a hoofbeast in a dishware establishment. Smash everything. Let them die free.
You don’t do that. Instead, you leave, for a distant dunetop, where you cannot see or sense anyone but a few desert invertebrates. And you call Karkat’s name.
----
The Knight of Blood is standing in front of you. He’s never been one for showy appearances, not like Gamzee, or Vriska, or Kanaya, or Eridan. In fact, he usually dresses drabber than his godhood, wearing a simple black cloak with no sigil. As he is doing now.
He opens his mouth, but you speak first. “What is going on, I mean, with the mortals here? They’re slaves, and it seems, to me, that you made them slaves? Why would you do something like that?”
“Tavros,” he says. “Please butt the fuck out of my business.”
You frown. “That was not an answer, to my question.”
Karkat groans and facepalms. “Look, it’s a long story. Can we go somewhere else to discuss this? Like some place not in the middle of bumfuck nowhere?”
You have to remind yourself sometimes, that not everyone likes to be in the middle of the wilderness, like you do. You find it calming.
“I think,” you say, “That this is a pretty good place.”
Karkat squints at you, then rolls his eyes and decaptchalogues a chair to sit in. You remain standing. You like to stand.
When he doesn’t offer any information, you press again. “So, those people, the slaves, why are they blood-bound?”
“Do you even know who these mortals are?” asks Karkat in reply. “Did you even do the slightest bit of cursory research on them? Or did you just trip over them and decide it was your business to fuck around with them?”
“It is my business,” you reply, “Because they prayed to me, and because my aspect, can free them, but will probably kill them?”
Karkat’s eyes narrow. “So is that what you’re going to do? Kill off these people because your aspect lets you?”
You shake your head. “No, I don’t want to kill them. I want to know, why they are slaves, and then for you to free them.”
Karkat shakes his head. “I’m not going to.”
“Why? They-”
“Listen, Nitram, I’m not going to go over this twice, so just shut the fuck up and listen. These people here, Kireshians, are the descendants and followers of this leader and warlord from a few of their generations back, named Kiresh. And he made a pact with the King here, the one who ruled at the time, that he wouldn’t attack their lands so long as the King let his people have safe passage. And of course because they’re mortals and they’re fucking idiots and have no sense of proportion, they made it a BLOOD PACT.”
“So they clearly didn’t trust each other, which made sense, since after a few years Kiresh went and started raiding the Kingdom's outlying settlements. Maybe he thought the King wouldn’t notice? Maybe he thought I wouldn’t notice? Fucking braindead.” Karkat snorts derisively. “The stipulation of the pact was that he and all of his people, and all their descendants and descendant’s descendants, had to serve the Kingdom, and all his descendants and bluh bluh blah. That’s it. Fucking dirty politicians getting divinity involved in their contracts. It’s bullshit but there you go. End of storytime.”
You blink. “Wait, so, these people are being punished because of something their ancestors did? How long ago, was that?”
Karkat pauses, tapping a claw against his chin. “I’m not sure. Not that long. A few centuries, I think.”
“But, I mean, I don’t think their species lives that long?”
Karkat nods. “Yeah, their generation time is short. So what?”
“So uh, these people don’t have anything to do with Kiresh, or the old King, or whoever it was. They’re different people.”
“They’re Kireshians. They're his descendents. They’re linked by their bloodlines and sworn to him, so the BLOOD PACT applies to them. It’s not a thing you’re supposed to do on a goddamn whim!”
“So, you’re not going to free them, because of this silly rule, about your pacts?”
Karkat frowns and leans forward. “It’s not a silly rule, it’s my fucking aspect!”
“Can’t you just let them go, this time? They didn’t do anything, and it wouldn’t hurt to make an exception, and be a little more, flexible.“
“That would be numbfuck stupid. No, I can’t make exceptions for every mortal that makes baby woofbeast eyes at me. On principle. If nothing else, it will be a warning for other mortals to not take BLOOD PACTS lightly.”
You’re feeling irritated, now. “You’re doing this, on principle? But, it’s just a rule!”
“Goddamn it, Tavros,” he says. “Go on your way, and butt the fuck out of this.”
He’s gone.
The Kireshians are sworn to serve the people of the Kingdom. Breaking that promise to Karkat would likely backlash, and kill all of them. And Karkat is too set in his ways, like he’s stuck in a rut. He can’t seem to think around his rules. You are kind of pissed off at him, but more than that, you want to free him from his rigid way of thinking.
------
You go, and talk, with the Kireshians. You learn that they worship their ancestor, not like he's a god, but like he's watching over them, guiding them. They tell stories about him, and talk about him, a lot. He's their identity, the remnant of a proud past, the only point of pride they have left.
You know that if they give up their culture, they could escape. Drop all ties with Kiresh, and they will no longer be bound. But you don't think, they'll do this. So that leaves convincing Karkat. You'll need to be creative, and sneaky, and you’re not so good at that.
But you know who is.
She owes you a favor anyway.
------
"You don't need to convince Karkat," she says, grinning. "He cares about his pact-holders, right? They're all family to him, right?"
Then she tells you, what she is going to do. And, you talk her down, to some less extreme methods, and she agrees, that she will only use them, as a backup.
So you go to the slaves, the once-proud people, the Kireshians, and tell them to inscribe your sigil on their doors, so she’ll know where to not strike.
------
You float gently on the breeze, high above the city. They are building great monuments, aqueducts, temples, sculpture. The sun is shining, on the red stone.
“Free the Kireshians, please," you say to Karkat, using his name. "Bad things are going to happen, if you don't." But he doesn't come.
So now you’re flying, and you watch, as Vriska Serket flies below you. She turns to look up at you, and gives you a wink.
And then, the sky goes black with soot.
And then, the hail comes, and the lightning.
And then, the crop blights, and the lesions, and the toxic algae that turns the water red.
And then, every male child is stillborn.
And you go to check, but the slaves are still not free.
“Karkat Vantas," you say. "You need to free the Kireshians. Your pact-holders are dying." You know that he can hear you, but he doesn't answer. Is he calling your bluff? Does he think that you wouldn't kill people who are bound by blood?
He's right. You wouldn't.
Vriska is shimmering and gleaming, radiant with all the light she is taking. She grins at you, and waves. “Plan 8!” she laughs.
The earth tremors, and cracks, and the King, and all his people, and all his lineage, are swallowed by darkness.
The slaves, bound to a bloodline now erased, are free.
-----
The Kireshians are free. And you are horrified.
“Don’t be so sensitive,” says Vriska, tossing her hair over a shoulder. “I freed the slaves like you asked, didn’t I?”
You gesture angrily. “Yes, but you killed another group of people, who had nothing to do with it!”
“I told you that was plan B.” Vriska sounds utterly unconcerned.
“I think it should have been, maybe, plan Z.”
“Oh, please, Tavros, like continually tormenting them with plagues is better. I guess Karkat doesn't even care about his stupid oath,” Vriska sneers. “Anyway, bonds removed, slaves free, you’re welcome.”
“Vriska this is not what I wanted!”
“What you wanted?” Vriska smiles sweetly. "What did you want me to do, keep killing babies until the King died of old age? Booooooooring. Tavros, you know how I do things. You wanted me to do it! You should try to get your pan sorted out before you - Aw, fuck, Karkat’s here.”
Yes, he is. He’s there, dressed in his deep red godhood, red wings flashing for a moment before he tucks them out of sight.
“Tavros, what the shitmaggot fuck did you do???”
“See you later, Tavros!” Vriska says cheerfully, and kisses you on the top of your left horn, before flying off.
------
"Mortals can't just.... make BLOOD PACTS without thinking about the consequences!!"
"I don't see why, these rules, are so important!"
"So you think every time a mortal breaks a promise, we should just swoop in and forgive them?" Karkat pitches his voice mockingly. "Oh, don't mind the fact that you literally swore on your fucking freedom or your life that you'd do this thing, we don't mind! Mortals lie all the time anyway, there's no reason to have an ironclad way of making them swear the truth!"
You cross your arms. "Not when people, who weren't even involved, are sworn in too!"
"They were still loyal to him. Fuck, Tavros, I thought you were going to try and break them of their cultural hang-ups, not fucking destroy the city!"
You frown at him. "That would have taken, a lot of time. Why didn't you, do that?"
"Oh wow shit I don't know, maybe I had other, better things to do?? You're the one who cared so much about this, not me! Fuck, you're a god, it's not like you don't have time, if this is what you want to do."
"Well, you should have cared, since it's your rule that got them enslaved!"
"I stand by what I did. Mortals have to keep their responsibilities straight when they mess around with the divine. I'm not going to spend my time finding them loopholes to exploit. Besides, it was their choice to keep their traditions. Isn't that what you like? Choice?"
"It's not, that simple. They were praying to me for help!"
"Oh boo hoo. And how many people are praying to you right now? Fuck, Tavros. That is a really shitty way to be a god. You have to pick your battles."
He's almost looking like he pities you now. You don't want pity from Karkat.
He snorts. "I know better than to try and make you swear an oath. But don't mess around with my shit again, Tavros. This is a warning."
He's right, there's no point in you swearing one. Your power could break any bond he put on you.
"What about, uh, Vriska?"
"I don't fucking care. That's your problem."
You didn't swear an oath. You can't break an oath you didn't swear.

Chapter 2 is up, y’all!
-----------------------------------
For the past 9.69 sweeps (or 21 years) of his life, Karkat Vantas has lived an ordinary life. Very ordinary. Dreadfully ordinary. Until, he had a close encounter of the strange kind in a bookshop, and the world as he knew it was turned upside down.
With the addition of an oddly familiar stranger who seems to know more about Karkat than he knows about himself, the arrival of old gods and even older magic, and the warring factions of the New Church raring at the heels of Karkat’s community, there is only one thing he knows for certain.
His life is never going to be ordinary again.

Into Thin Air (4/4)
Chapter 4: Without Reason
Your name is Roxy Lalonde, and you're used to waking up to drunk texts, meaningless encoded notes and scribbles, Rose cuddled up to you, puddles of vomit, and combinations of any and all of the above. Sometimes, you wake up to your skull feeling like it's going to crack open, or to half-forgotten dreams of impenetrable darkness. Once or twice, you've woken to weird bruises on your hands that you can't recall the origins of.
"Rose sweetie, Mom has a hangover," you groan, but school is school and missed busses are missed busses, so you splash water on your face, force down a bit of toast and coffee, and drive your daughter to class.
After the whirlwind of rushing about preparing for the day, you revisit the texts, frowning and squinting at the picture. John, smiling, wearing an adorable dinosaur onesie, surrounded by birthday presents. Not a clown in sight.
You've never known yourself to straight-up _hallucinate _while drunk. Certainly not to hallucinate purple clowns. That's definitely new. You type an apology to Stan, to which he doesn't respond. He may be still asleep, given the time difference.
Anyway, it's time to get to work. You go down to the lab and troubleshoot for a few hours, then take your habitual martini break. Looks like Stan has messaged you back.
I ACCEPT YOUR APOLOGY, ROXY. I KNOW YOU ARE NOT ALWAYS IN CONTROL OF YOURSELF WHEN YOU ARE IN A STATE. BUT YOU MUST REALIZE HOW ALARMING IT IS TO HEAR ABOUT CLOWNS FOR SOMEONE IN OUR SITUATION.
You text back, sipping your glass absently.
Because of the gods?
YES. THE IDEA THAT THE
THAT ONE, IN PARTICULAR, IS TARGETING US, IS
TO BE HONEST, 'ALARMING' IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT.
He hardly ever drops off mid-sentence like that. Poor Stan.
I understand. Hes not exactly my cuppa, either.
Speaking of cuppas, it's time to mix yourself another martini.
I'm sory I scared you.
You scroll up to look at the picture of John again. Maybe you should show it to Rose. Wouldn't it be sweet if they could be pen pals? There's something funny about it again, though. You're not quite sure what. Isn't there something purple-ish on the walls? Maybe not clowns, but... something similar to clowns?
YOU ARE FORGIVEN. ARE YOU DRINKING AGAIN?
lol a little. hey are u SURE there are no clowns in your kids rom?
THIS IS REALLY NOT FUNNY ANYMORE, ROXY.
As you take a sip and download the picture, something hazy and strange occurs to you.
could you take another pic of the kids wall? i need to test somethnig
No reply from the other end.
i mean it this is impoortna.
I WISH YOU WOULD STOP DRINKING.
i have my bsest ideas when im drunking.
As you wait for a reply, you squint your eyes at the picture. John. Presents. Onesie. And a certain undeniable clownishness to the walls that you were absolutely sure wasn't there before.
Miraculously, Stan has sent you more pictures. Pictures of the walls, taken apparently from several angles.
They all still give you a clowny feeling, one that's getting stronger with every sip of your martini. You pour yourself a straight shot of vodka, then down it in one. For science.
Every wall of the room is covered in horrible purple clowns.
You have to put the phone down and take a breath. What is this? You giggle. This isn't funny but you giggle.
clnwns everrywere. sencd mor picsf f rooms.
ROXY, IN GOOD CONSCIENCE I SHOULD ASK YOU TO LIE DOWN. IT'S TOO EARLY IN THE DAY FOR THIS.
mor picx stanny
I WON'T ENABLE THIS. IF YOU WANT MORE PICTURES WHEN YOU SOBER UP, I WILL SEND THEM.
You frown at the phone, and continue texting. Why won't he help you with this? There are clowns, awful clowns, all over the walls of his kid's room - isn't that important? You only see them when you're drunk, which maybe means Stan doesn't drink enough to see them. You will fix that. You need to send him something strong. Vodka.
You stagger into your room's private bar, and grab the Grey Goose. Or... would Stan be more of an Absolut guy?
Then you hear a soft noise, look up, and see Him.
You didn't hear anyone come in, but there's a god here, in your house. In your room, with you. His skin is gray. A single horn with an arrow tip arcs up from his head. The other one is broken off, leaving a stump. He's wearing dark glasses and a midnight blue-black hood with a trailing end that drags on the ground. He's long-haired and unreasonably tall. And fuck, this guy is built.
Your mouth feels like it's lagging several minutes behind your mind. "What're you doing...? In my...?" Then you blink. You were raised in a legal seminary. And yet... you don't know which god this is.
"It's alright, Roxy," he says, his voice softer than you expected. You relax instinctively, like hearing the voice of an old friend. Who is this? "I know you don't remember me. But you need to trust me when I tell you we have met before."
"How'd you...?"
"You told me where you keep your spare key." The god smiles, almost apologetically. His teeth are perfect and sharp. "Under the flower pots beside the outer stairwell."
"But..." Your mind is whirling. Who is this??? "Who....?"
"You call me Sagittarius." The air around him shimmers, and he's now wearing a magnificent, midnight blue fitted suit, emblazoned on the arms and legs with white symbols of sagittarius, and silver cufflinks that look somewhat like the spiraling sigil for space.
Saggy! The notes! The missing god! GODS, it all makes sense! "You," you manage. "Talk to me. When 'm like this, and I don't remember. Why?"
"This is the only time you can see me. It is not an ideal situation. But if I appeared to you otherwise, the other gods would know I was here. They must not know I'm here, lest they join to war against me. I need to wait for the exact right time."
You blink, really only retaining half of it. "You don' like em."
Sagittarius nods. "I do not support the project to recreate the Game, which involves you. So, I must submit to my situation."
"Yeah well, join the clubbo bucko." If you drink any more, you might not be able to hold your end of the conversation, but you're tempted.
"You've said as much previously, yes."
Hell. You reach for the nearest bottle (Grey Goose? Why did you take that out?) but Sagittarius takes your hand in his. His grip is powerful, almost painful, but not quite. You're too sloshed to care. Instead, you giggle. "Holdin' hands now, handsome? Take me t' dinner first."
He breaks out in a sweat. "You wouldn't remember it, if I had."
You giggle, though you're not sure if that's a joke.
He takes off his sunglasses to stare into your unfocused eyes, and his gaze is as blue as the sea. "D --> 100k at me, Ro%y. You must write a note to yourself. You need to tell your boss, the Mage, that John Egbert is in e%treme danger from the Bard, and that he must move to protect the boy. You must write this to yourself e%actly, with as few mistakes as possible, so you remember it later."
His grip on your hand tightens, very slightly, and you feel like he's millimeters from snapping your finger bones. You feel no fear at all.
"Oh," you say. "Okay, then. I've got some um, questions."
He smiles again. "For you, I will answer all of them."
You wake up to a pounding headache, a bruised hand, Rose sleeping on the porch, a bunch of pictures of blank walls from Stanley, and a coded note stuffed into your brassiere.
When you finally get around to decoding it, you're shocked to see that the note is actually meaningful this time.
tell him drunks clowns are from Bard. protec kid.
You're not sure, at first, whether to believe yourself. Your drunk self is not necessarily dependable. After all, you apparently stole the spare key from under the flowerpot in your last drunken spree, which was unfortunate for poor Rose, who had to wait outside until you woke up in the wee hours of the morning.
Anyway, you do tell Stan about the 'drunk clowns' being from the Bard. He seems to take it pretty seriously, and asks how to assuage the Carnivale's wrath. You are not sure, but suggest that he display respect for clowns.
The next time you video chat, he's got a clown painting framed on his wall, plain as sober day.

7/7 of my post-canon semi-godstuck Dirkjake reconciliation fic! It’s DONE. This started as a little side project that was only supposed to last a week and turned into... this, but I’m proud to have finished it and I hope everyone has enjoyed reading it. If anyone feels especially generous to my poor ass, I have a patreon.
