Idk if this is necessarily a hot take about monster hunter rise/sunbreak but I think it was such a missed opportunity to not bring back Yama Tsukami in some form or fashion. I think it could have been a really unique fight especially with wirebugs allowing for additional depth to fighting it.

hoping some day it makes a return to the mainline games alongside some of the other massive elder dragons.

Got mad they wouldnt drop the materials to craft the armor so i doodled Primordial Malzeno. Such an awesome guy, such an awesome end to such an awesome game !! Very sad to see it go, in hopes that the next MH will keep the super dynamic gameplay but less.... less op hunters MAMQMQMNS

I love Rakna Kadakis design so imagine my disappointment when I unlocked her armor and it was giving kitschy, discount Vaal Hazak.

Design rant under the cut:

Rakna Kadakis Monster Design is clearly based on traditional Japanese wedding dress. So I was really disappointed by her lackluster armor design.

It has a very cheap and kitschy feel to it, which isnt helped by the tacked on roses and rubbery looking spider silk.

Rakna Kadakis Armor runs into a similar problem as some other Monster Hunter armors, I find. Where the armor isnt borrowing enough visually from the Monster its supposedly made of (often times its the color scheme that suffers) and in this case its both.

I'm guessing they went with a western bridal design since Mizutsunes Armor is already based on the Shiromuku but i feel like A: that theres enough visual differences between the Monsters and B: I have enough trust left in the designers that they probably couldve made it feel unique from Mizu.

Raknas Armor design is a missed oppurtunity in my book because the designers didnt cash in on either angle that couldve been taken with this design.

Angle 1: as we've already discussed, is the Shiromuku. It wouldve fit like a glove since Rakna Kadakis Hood already looks like a Wataboshi and her two front legs give off the same feel as long kimono sleeves.

(I feel the need to note that I am not japanese, so my interpretation might still be flawed despite my utmost efforts to get the Shiromuku right. I referenced both the Mizutsune Armor and Chihirohowe's guide about Ofurisode as best as I could)

Angle 2: Especially with a spider design to me, always screams, Bustle Gowns! While not explicitly bridal related, it still wouldve worked better to capture the overall feel of a spiders silhouette. Additionally, it's not like people didnt get married during the Bustle gown Era. I will admit that the Bonnet I used probably(?) wasnt in fashion anymore during the 1870 but not using a Bonnet as an alternate take for Rakna Kadakis Hood is a bigger missed opportunity me thinks. I tried to make both versions as such that the spidersilk hides the hard chitin that the entire body is covered in. So that the wearer looks softer and appears more harmless.

I realized a few days ago that I hadn’t tried drawing Gaismagorm’s absolutely beautiful jaws yet, and I was STUNNED!!! So I finally drew it! It was so much fun!! :D

Comic bout one of my fav layered armours in MH Sunbreak.

Only while looking at the refs did I notice that the outfit, well, emphasizes a certain part of the body. Not complaining at all, but that just was the catalyst to make a whole comic bout it.

It also funnily fits pretty well with these two’s relationship in my mind. Like, I am a big fan of “childhood friends to lovers”, especially the part of characters just being so used to someone and their presence, and a certain status quo, that it might just fly over their heads how much they actually like each other. Which is totally the case for these two haha.

They’re also both so damn oblivious in my mind, that after Rise, they FINALLY admitted their feelings to each other, but nothing changes between them at all, except the rare peck here and there. That is until Sunbreak, where other characters try to glean their relationship status and thru convos it opens their minds that a relationship can also have a physically intimate aspect. Once that barrier is torn down they suddenly notice a LOT more about the other.

Yes, yes I have a lot of fun with this.

Here’s the skulls I made for the vid!

For garang I used Gorillas and Macaques for reference, and for luna I used members of Hesperocyoninae for reference because that’s what I think it is, but like with most things in monhun its phylogenetic placement in the tree of life is kinda subjective.

I don’t have much to say about garang other than, aside from a missing pair of premolars on the mandibles, the dental formula matches perfectly with primates.

I do have more to say on luna however. The pronounced snout arch makes me think Lunagaron might deal with a lot of bite stress and have a very powerful bite. There’s also the long teeth and notch in the tooth line on the upper jaw, which are obvious adaptations for fish eating, but the robustness of the teeth and the iron reinforcement makes me think luna might be more like a cursorial phytosaur or otter, able to eat a wide assortment of things but perfectly capable of eating slippery stuff and being able to crack open armored prey like turtles or mollusks.

I know in the past I’ve said I think luna might have had more aquatic ancestors, and while that’s possible, it’s probably more likely that this trend towards aquatic-ness is actually new. I actually brought up the semi-aquatic luna theory to UHC.

I still stand by a few things I’ve said here such as the thick tail partially being due to fat stores and the scales helping with hydrodynamics and the immune system, but I’m not really sure about luna having one set of teeth anymore.
