My rule of thumb for Edibility of Monsters headcanons is “If it resembles something that’s eaten in our world, you can eat it in the Zeldaverse.”

But that’s a little wobbly too, like, a Pols Voice is far enough removed from a bunny that you probably won’t want it as lapine. Bokoblins are piggish but they’re too sentient to eat.

A Tektite, however? That’s a bug. Bugs are cuisine. You can eat Tektite.

Revenants vs. ReDeads;;

Castle Town’s Revenants are, in essence, the former population that didn’t evacuate to Kakariko in time, and ended up dying within the walls. The powerful dark energy spilling from the Dark World (since its entrance is in the Temple of Time,) reanimates them.

They’re not Ganondorf’s creatures! They’re their own beasties.

And they’re not fully aware they’re dead; they will do the things they did in life, albeit listlessly and without feeling. If a shopkeeper who was trampled by a frantic crowd was usually in his booth in the market from sunup to noon, then went home, you’ll observe his flattened corpse dragging itself into the stall at dawn, standing there still for several hours, then shambling home. Undead guards continue to patrol their routes, and return to the barracks to stare at each other blankly all night.

It’s kinda creepy. And unlucky scavengers who die within the Dark World’s miasma cloud will also rise and shuffle aimlessly about.

Because these corpses are animated by dark magic and not a curse or a virus, you won’t turn into a zombie if you get bitten by one. But their mouths ARE very germy, so you gotta clean the fuck out of any bite wounds you get from them, or risk infection.

ReDeads are cursed. If you’re killed by a ReDead, you rise as one. That’s all. Bites hurt, but won’t turn you. It has to be death. And the ReDeads CAN be commanded by Ganondorf. They’re not quite as thick as the revenants, who can’t fuckin’ see him at all because of the general haze of dark magic and their own lack of anything remotely resembling smarts.

So, don’t worry too much about being bitten! Just seek medical attention once you’re clear of the ruins.
