Acquanetta (Arabian Nights, Jungle Woman, The Sword of Monte Cristo)—i just think naming yourself 'acquanetta' is a banger move
Jean Seberg (Breathless, Saint Joan)— Some of us watched À bout de souffle as a lil French undergrad and had the trajectory of our lives changed by Jean Seberg. She IS French new wave!! She is the moment!! She sadly had to work with a lot of shitty directors in her career but even so, she has this magnetic energy whenever she’s on screen. In her personal life, she was also very supportive of civil rights causes, and was even targeted/harassed by the FBI for financially supporting the Black Panther Party.
This is round 1 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]
Jean Seberg:
Tumblr media
anyone who plays Joan of Arc is kind of hot by default tbh
she's gorgeous, she's cool, she has the original blond pixie cut
She donated a lot of her money to civil rights organizations such as the NAACP and the black panther party as well as Native American school groups, as a result of this the fbi ran a smear campaign against her and a surveillance campaign which is thought to have led to her suicide tragically.
idk if this is propaganda but the COINTELPRO and the FBI are widely blamed for her death. If the FBI was after her for supporting the Black Panther Party you know she was good

The Avengers: Earth Mightiest Heroes & X-Men Evolution series watch
Some Assembly Required written by Sebastian Montes
The supervillain Mandrill is jumping around the city causing trouble but is stopped by the Wasp. Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man, and Hulk. Meanwhile, a stowaway is confronted by sailors on a cargo ship. Black Panther defeats them and jumps ship into the night.
Pepper meets with Hulk, while the others are late. Iron Man gives them a guided tour, and Pepper hands out the Avenger ID cards. Bruce warns Hulk that after the Avengers have caught the escaped prisoners, they’ll turn on him. Meanwhile, Hank Pym works on his prototype Ultron head and Jan moves into the Avengers Mansion.
The Enchantress prowls the Mansion, hexing JARVIS, and assumes Bruce Banner's form. JARVIS issues a warning to Thor that an intruder is interfering with the security, and Thor suggests that Hulk and he patrol the Mansion. Hulk leaves in a huff, and Pepper convinces Thor to go after him to bring him back. Thor and Hulk fight in Central Park.
Nick Fury speaks with Stark about the team and says supports Avengers but people are uneasy with super-powered heroes. Tony is dubious about Fury's claims suspecting Shield really just wants more control in the situation.
Stark gathers the Avengers to deal with Hulk who is under the Enchantress's spell. Iron Man and Thor find out and Banner breaks the spell. Hulk flees. Iron Man is attacked by the Executioner. Avengers battle Enchantress and Executioner.
Hulk and Banner discuss the Hulk's existence. Hulk rejoins the battle to save Giant-Man. Enchantress fails to regain control of the Hulk and is defeated. but the Executioner manages to escape with her unconscious body by using his powers to manipulate time and space.
After the fight, the Hulk quits, claiming that the Enchantress was right. He leaps away, and the Avengers return to the mansion. The Black Panther is keeping a watchful eye on the mansion. Meanwhile, the Hulk heads towards the Arctic north where Captain America's shield is shown to be trapped in the ice.
Well, I really like this episode. Everyone has been introduced and the team has been formed so so it the characters can finally lean back a bit and interact with each other.
I really love the contrast between Janet and Hank, with Janet's enthusiasm for being a hero and Hank's but science tho. They're both really adorable in this.
This is weird to say but the Hulk and Bruce also have an interesting relationship in this with Hulk animosity but also trust in Bruce. Bruce basically is Hulk's conscience. Unlike the movies these two can interact with each other which adds an interesting element.
Amora get to be pretty cool in this episode. Showing that she is just as sneaky and cunning as the best of them and she gets to use her magic in a fun way in the fight.
Turn of the Rogue written by Greg Johnson and Rick Ungar
The X-men are training in the Danger Room when to Cyclop's surprise he finds that Rogue is part of the simulation. He stops the program and asks Xavier why he added Rogue to the training simulation, Xavier tells him that he added her as an element of surprise, something they will need to get used to on their missions. Scott later tells Jean he doesn't like using Rogue's images as an enemy because he still thinks there is a chance that Rogue may join their side. Mystique overhears their conversation and Darkholme informs Rogue of what happened and tells her that their no chance that the X-men would ever truly want to befriend her.
Later, Jean and Scott were preparing for a school trip, but Darkholme manipulated things to make Jean lose her spot, and Rogue took her place instead. While they were riding the bus, heavy snow caused it to skid off the road and come to a halt. Rogue then suggested riding snowmobiles to caves during the storm, and she even challenged Scott to a race. The teacher gives a geology lecture to students in a cave. Rogue wanders off, followed by Scott. She asks what he wants. He wants to be friends. She demands the truth, asks if she's a target for the X-Men, and mentions the battle simulation with her as the enemy. Scott says she's been lied to and can join them. She refuses and starts to leave. A student approaches, revealing themself as Mystique. She taunts them, shoves Scott off a ledge, and tells him that Xavier is hiding the truth. Rogue confronts Mystique, demanding no more secrets. She uses her power to see Mystique's memories and sees that Mystique was deceiving her into thinking that the X-men were attacking her.
Scott landed on a ledge and Rogue was able to hop down and pull him up Mystique tried to drop a boulder on Scott and Rogue, causing them to fall into the river. Scott saves them from going over a waterfall, but he hits his head. Rogue apologized for what she had done.Xavier, Wolverine, and Storm have been alerted to the danger and fly towards the mountains in the Blackbird to try to find Scott. Scott and Rogue trying their best to avoid Mystique get stuck on a narrow bridge that nearly collapses before the X-men arrive. On the jet, Rogue hesitates to choose sides, but Wolverine assures her that she won't be thrown off. She takes their side and is welcomed by the X-Men. Later, the young mutants confront Xavier about Mystique. Rogue says honesty is important. Xavier promises to be more open with them.
Professor Xavier has a robot of a teenage girl and that's all I can think about. That wasn't a hologram in the danger room Xavier just had a robot of Rogue made and I don't know how or why.
In start contrast to EMH this show so far put emphasis on character based drama. It all been pretty good so far. I'm using on the side of Cyclops is a boring character but changing the settings and making him younger actually helps his character shine a bit. It lets his interactions with the others be personable and giving him that concept of he's growing into his role makes him more interesting.
Mystique can turn into animals in this show and I can't remember if that's a thing she can do in the comics. If so that puts her on the top tier considering this can allow her to fly.
With the bug shake up of rogue joining the X-Men and the reveal of Mystique's identity I'm looking forward to the next episode

the movie is pretty much over at this point, technically there’s thirty minutes left, and i just want to take a moment to clarify my earlier posts on the matter. because after i posted it earlier i realized that my posts could have made it sound like black panther and infinity war made shuri feel older than she wasn’ which isn’t the case at all, it’s clear that she’s young in both movies, and particularly in black panther the other adult characters treat her like she’s a teenager that needs to be protected.
but is everyone really silent about the fact that n’jadaka definitely tried to kill her? like he was fully aware that she was a child, that she wasn’t even alive when his father was killed and yet he is definitely about to kill her? or at least would be willing to make the attempt?
like i understand that n’jadaka is meant to be portrayed as the antagonist, and captain america is a hero and so him fighting a child is weird. but if you look at both instances in context what n’jadaka is doing is just plainly worse and maybe because i’m not invested in the mcu fandom i don’t see it as much as i do people hating on steve for what he did to peter but i’m really thrown here?

Gentrification and The Last Black Man In San Francisco
Heres a blog I wrote lol
Joe Talbot’s The Last Black Man in San Francisco is a tale told of the heartbreaking wave of culture-annihilating gentrification that has hit one of America’s iconic metropoles. It’s sloping streets, angular row houses, and quirky residents have made it a place of myth emboldened further by its key role in radical social movements such as the Anti-War Movement, The Black Panther Party, etc. But, the story Talbot tells doesn't reflect on the history known by most (white) Americans. Instead, he tells the story of the black man in San Francisco and all of the culture that gentrification is, successfully, trying to wipe away.
The film’s protagonist, Jimmie Failes IV, and his best friend, Montgomery Allen, take it upon themselves to maintain the house that Jimmie grew up in. The rub of the whole thing though is that neither Mont or Jimmie live there, in fact, this older Yuppie (stands for: Young, Urban Professional) couple are the owners of the property. In one of the first scenes, Jimmie is repainting the window sill in the front of the house and the woman who owns the house threatens to call the police, which is quickly met by her apologetic husband. This struck me as funny because it perfectly represents both sides of the well-meaning, affluent, white person that have become the principal population group in the city. On one side, these new folks are tired of locals giving them shit and not caring about them or their cool publishing jobs; and on the other they won’t call the cops to avoid the risk of being “like” other White people. Although humorous, this scene is a haunting reminder to viewers who are themselves victims of gentrification that this is what the final stages of the process look like. Neighborhoods once teeming with ethnic influence, devoid of the blandness of White America, have now been transformed into pricey and bland versions of the suburbs where these damn people come from.
The role of race is also very present in this film as it does a great job establishing the symbolic gravity that happens whenever Jimmie or Mont are on the screen. This becomes especially clear when the film returns to where Jimmie and Mont actually live, which is the far-off borough of Bayview-Hunters Point. This area plays just as key a role as the decadent Victorian house that Jimmie longs for, as it establishes the result of when a cities inhabitants are priced out of not just their homes but their impact on the cities culture. In this part of the map, there are a group of local men who spend their days busting the balls of any and everybody that come their way. This group acts as Greek Chorus which provides commentary and atmosphere to scenes where Jimmie and Mont seem to be singularly focused on the old Victorian. Another character that stood out to me was a Preacher who stands on a milk crate and preaches to these men, and anybody walking past, about the insane levels of inequality that have pushed Black people so far from the city. In one scene, the Preacher is railing against this mysterious cohort of men wearing hazmat suits cleaning some sort of chemical spill in the Bay right behind where the Preacher is standing. “Why are they wearing suits and we’re not? What are they not telling us?” he roars atop his milk crate to the attention of, uh, nobody that’s listening.
The imagery of this movie, which includes the Chorus and The Preacher, speak to the San Francisco that is fading away fast. Another image that stands out is a scene where Jimmie is waiting at a bus stop next to a nudist and they are both accosted by a party bus full of inebriated Yuppies. They roar and cackle at the sight of the nudist and proclaim him “the fuckin’ man!”, but fail to realize they’re role in the extermination of people like the nudist. Jimmie and this nude man sit silently in shared exhaustion of this wave of people storming they’re city, despite their best efforts to “be cool”, the city is dying with each yoga studio and salad bar that opens.
Although my experience as a straight, white man has no comparison to the struggles of POC and LGBTQIA+ communities in this country, I do share the same feeling of being exiled from your own home. I grew up in Hoboken, New Jersey which has now turned into a hot bed for gentrifiers who desire to work in New York. This is yet another iconic American metropole that has had it’s soul stamped out by the wave of suburbanites who feel it is their right to claim the city as their own. This is seen, mostly, in the cost of housing and cost of living which has skyrocketed as a result of the wave of private equity money that flooded the city and whose tentacles have reached nearly every industry you could imagine. Hoboken was once a working class town that had its fair share of racial tension, as any town in this country, but it always remained genuinely Hoboken, until the real estate developers came. Wharfs and warehouses that once played a key role in the American economy were demolished and turned into apartment complexes. This obviously brought more money into the community, but soon the locals that made Hoboken were being pushed out further and further. For instance, my mother and I lived in one apartment for my entire childhood until the end of middle school but the rent got raised and we were forced to move to Jersey City. In high school, I spent most of my free time in Hoboken because that’s where my friends were but everytime the party was over and my friends walked back to their childhood homes, I had to walk across the city to the train station to get back to my new home. I felt displaced and lonely for most of my high school days as I grappled with the harsh realities of gentrification and the brutality of capitalism. It also did not help that my mother was laid off from her job in 2009 and was essentially job-less for five years.
My childhood home was sold to a young couple from somewhere that they turned into some trendy little spot for them to live for the time being. No care was given to the memories I made there or the progress that my mother made as a single mom raising a child in this area, just a cold “Sorry, thanks for cleaning it before you left”. The coldness of gentrification is the most galling result of this phenomenon. The young people move in and immediately lust for making their mark; whether it be calling the police or 311 on locals loitering on the streets, or building breweries in old school buildings, etc. Business' that I grew up walking by every day became boarded up and replaced with hair salons and boutiques that were going to close in six months anyway. But, despite the spirit that lives in places like Hoboken, San Francisco, New York, or Boston; money always seems to win.
Watching “The Last Black Man in San Francisco” gave me a strange sense of hope because it showed me how to defend your home, even when the odds are terribly stacked against you. There was a scene at the end of the movie where Jimmie Failes is sitting on the bus and overhears these two Yuppie women shitting on San Francisco and talking about much they “hate it here”. Jimmie turns to them and tells them “you don't get to hate it unless you love it”, which doesn’t make an impact on the women, but it made an impact on me and many others who have seen the movie. Hearing transplants bitch and moan about how shitty the New York subway is or complaining about the cat that lives in the bodega makes me laugh when it used to make me sad, because I know that the city has won. What I mean by that, is that when you hear Yuppies complain about the community they’ve gentrified it's clear that they’ve failed to make “the city their own” and have succumbed to the community that was already there. Cities are magical places that are the center for so many things, but what truly makes them magical are the people that built them, whether it be physically or spiritually. So, I hope to embody the spirit of Jimmie and Mont as fierce defenders of their homes even when it doesnt even seem worth it to fight for it anymore.

Earth’s Mightiest Retrospective Ep 24: “This Hostage Earth”
Tumblr media
(Directed by Sebastian Montes, Written by Michael Ryan, Original Airdate: June 12, 2011)
This episode marks the beginning of the end for Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes season one, as Zemo and Enchantress’s plans for the Masters of Evil take the next step. Amora begins the episode retrieving the items that will drive the rest of this episode, the Norn Stones, which Zemo believes will help him finally conquer Earth. Meanwhile, Iron Man gives Thor new information about a way to get him back to Asgard, which begins with an awkward “as you know” exposition dump about Thor’s current dilemma. This conversation gets briefly cut away from to focus on Hank leaving the team again, despite Jan’s insisting he stay. He still blames himself for Ultron’s actions. The exposition marathon doesn’t stop there.
Most of this episode’s first half concerns establishing or reaffirming rules that will be important to how the remainder of this episode and the finale storyline will play out. When Tony finishes explaining his plan to get Thor home, Cap explains how Red Skull used a similar machine back in “Meet Captain America.” Then that leads into another info dump from Thor about the forces connecting the rest of the Nine Realms to Earth. Which finally leads to them discovering how seven of the eight points that connect Earth to those realms are giving off magical energy as they speak. The heroes play right into the Masters of Evil’s plans. All seven of them individually go to the seven points where the magic is coming from and each get ambushed by a member of the Masters protecting a Norn Stone as they break down the barriers between Earth and the other realms connected to Asgard.
Wasp deals with Abomination in the arctic, mostly evading the gamma-monster’s punches rather than directly fighting him. She eventually gets an assist in stopping the villain from a returned Giant Man. Hawkeye fights Chemistro in the jungle, though Clint has no idea who the villain is (“How can you not remember? You punched me in the face!”/“That doesn’t narrow it down.”) Iron Man fights the Living Laser in a cave, the energy villain too fast for him to fight directly. Black Panther confronts Wonder Man in a graveyard by trying to reason with the reluctant villain while keeping his claws at the ready behind his back. Hulk gets into an all-out brawl with Skurge the Executioner in the middle of a lake. Captain America fights Crimson Dynamo in what look like the remains of the same castle where he fought the Red Skull, never stated as such so I can’t be certain.
Thor fights against the two who’ve been pulling everyone’s strings the whole time, Zemo and Enchantress. With the rest of his teammates all struggling against their opponents and communications between them cut off, the God of Thunder finds himself caught in the power struggle between the two archvillains. Zemo give him more trouble than expected thanks to enchanted weapons that can harm the Asgardian. Thor ends up in the bonds of Enchantress’s spells to watch while she unleashes the full power of the Norn Stones to bring Midgard* back into alignment with the other realms. The signs of this become apparent around the other Avengers and even to a few of the other Masters of Evil, unaware of what the Norn Stones were for. Elements from the Nine Realms start seeping into their surroundings as Enchantress continues weaving her spell. While she does her work, Thor tells Zemo not to trust anything Enchantress promised him. The Baron had a plan for that all along as he puts a mind control collar around the Asgardian spellcaster’s neck, telling her to make sure any forces coming to Earth will be loyal to him.
Thor manages to get Mjolnir back before Zemo can kill him and defeats the villain, freeing a weakened Enchantress in the process. Once communications are back up, he tells the other Avengers what they need to do once they get rid of the villains they’re fighting, destroy the Norn Stones to stop the spell before it’s irreversible. Each Avenger finally deals with their villains in their own way, the most notable being Black Panther talking Wonder Man into retreat, Hulk taking Executioner’s axe for himself and Iron Man absorbing Living Laser’s energy before launching him into space. They destroy the seven Norn Stones and save Earth from an invasion of mythic monsters. However, when JARVIS scans for any signs of the team, he finds nothing. Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are no longer on Earth. The episode ends as Thor wakes up in the throne room of Odin’s palace in Asgard to find Loki in the seat of power.
“This Hostage Earth” operates as a bit of a misdirection for what conflicts it starts bringing full circle. It plays mostly as another Avengers vs The Masters of Evil story, until the scope of Enchantress’s plan comes into play. The Avengers fighting individually against the villains make some of the tenser battles we’ve had all season. Then the resolution to this conflict brings us into the setup for the rest of EMH season one’s final story.
We’ll get more into that next time as we catch up with the Avengers scattered across the Nine Realms.

crowd vs. critic // BEST OF THE DECADE (2010s)
Tumblr media
Well, people, I tried. I really tried to whittle down the decade to 100 movies or fewer just like a good little Best of Decade list does, but here we are. That is, here we are at 144.
Maybe it’s because movies have meant so much to me this decade. When I graduated from high school in 2010, I loved John Hughes and Audrey Hepburn, but since then, film has cemented itself as my favorite art form. A few highlights in this journey:
Taking film classes at Taylor University, including a trip to the Sundance Film Festival in 2013
Writing for ZekeFilm starting in 2016
Writing about every new movie I watched in 2016
Watching classic movies while podcasting about Gilmore Girls pop culture references
Discovering my love for Turner Classic Movies, including taking their online summer course “Mad About Musicals”
Watching every movie nominated for Best Picture in 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2019
Beginning a slow (very slow) but sure trek through every Best Picture winner in history
And, oh yeah— starting this little blog!
I left Snow White and The Huntsman wishing someone would review it considering how fun it was even though it wasn’t a great art. Then I thought, what if that person was me? I hope my writing and critical analysis has grown since then, but I still ask the same questions about every movie I’ve watched since then: What is the popcorn potential? What is the artistic taste?
This decade I also spent July Friday nights watching outdoor movies on Art Hill, hosted annual Oscars watch parties with dear friends, attended my first midnight premiere (The Hunger Games), paid extra for the reclining seats to celebrate my first job (Interstellar), and found a laugh break with my whole family during a stressful summer (Ant-Man and the Wasp).
So here’s a small tribute to the time I spent watching, discussing, and reading and writing about movies I watched these 10 years: 72 Crowd picks and 72 Critic picks. They’re the 144 films that moved me, made me laugh, or made the biggest impact on me, and they’re the ones I recommend most from the 2010s.
Crowd-Pleasers of the 2010s
Tumblr media
1. 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) – An acting tour de force you’ll still be thinking about days later. (#JohnGoodmanForBestSupportingActor) Read Crowd vs. Critic reviews. On my Best of 2016.
2. The Age of Adaline (2015) - The color palette and costumes are dreamy, and the romance taking a back seat to Adaline’s personal growth is refreshing. On my Best of 2015.
3. Austenland (2013) – “This movie is for two kinds of people: people who love Jane Austen and people who think Jane Austen fans are funny.” – A paraphrased director Jerusha Hess. On my Sundance 2013 lineup. On my Best of 2013.

Book Recommendations
The Guardians are staying in Wakanda and Groot decides he would rather spend time with T’chall then having a tour. Ao3 link here and if you liked this fic, leave me a tip here!
   “I am Groot!”
T’challa had never seen such a small creature. He watched with amusement as the small tree climbed onto his desk. He grinned as Groot waved to him. T’chall returned the wave, watching Groot as the small tree inspected his new surroundings. Groot seemed incapable of fear and was more interested in exploring.
This was the first time T’challa had met the famous Groot. Normally, he was bigger than this but right now, he was no taller than a rat and had the mind of a child. His friends called themselves the Guardians of the Galaxy. They were currently visiting Wakanda. They had found some stolen Wakandan technology, and they had returned it. T’challa offered them a weekend in Wakanda as thanks. Groot, apparently not interested in spas, museums and festivals. He was content to look around the king’s personal belongings.
“I am Groot!” The sapling walked over to the book T’challa had been reading.
“Oh, you’ve read Count of Monte Cristo?” T’challa asked with a smile.
   “I am Groot.”
“I didn’t know that space had Earth books,” T’challa put a bookmark into his book. “I would think aliens would find them boring.”
“I am Groot, I am Groot.”
“You make a good point,” T’challa nodded his head. “So friend, what other books do you enjoy?”
“I am Groot!” Groot declared, listing off titles. “I am Groot, I am Groot, I am Groot, I am Groot!”
“Hm. I never really was a fan of Philip K. Dick myself. I have yet to read one of his books that I enjoy.”
   “I am Groot!”
“You think I would enjoy Ubik? Well my friend, since the recommendation is coming from you, I think I will take it,” T’challa was enjoying this conversation. “Would you like to continue this conversation?”
   “I am Groot!” Groot nodded.
As soon as they got back to the Milano, Peter was buying Groot a cat collar with a bell. How they managed to lose him on their first day of their vacation was astounding. Groot had promised all four of them that he wouldn’t have wandered away. And what did the infantilized sequoia do? Wander off! The worst thing was that Wakanda was huge! They had no idea where the baby tree could be!
“How did we lose him? Our first day here and we’ve already lost Groot!” Gamora rubbed her temples.
“He could not have gotten far,” Drax said. “His legs are not that long.”
“But what if he wandered out of the city?” Peter sounded worried. “What if--”
   “Black Panther found him?”
Peter stared at Rocket who was pointing behind them. Peter turned around to see T’challa carrying Groot in his hand. Groot smiled, waving at his friends.
“Oh thank god,” Peter breathed a sigh of relief. “You found him! Your highness, I am so sorry--”
   “Please Peter, call me T’challa.”
“Um---okay,” Peter was a bit shocked by the casual attitude. “Groot didn’t bother you did he?”
   “I am Groot!” Groot interjected.
   “Groot says---” Rocket began.
“Yes, that is correct Groot. We’ve discussing books. Groot has a vast insight on science fiction and it’s modern adaptations. It was a delight to speak with him. He has such fascinating views.”
The other Guardians stared at T’challa for a good solid minute.
“Groot can read?” Drax broke the silence.
“You can understand Groot?” Rocket asked.
“Yes, and yes,” T’challa responded. “As a king, I must know how to speak with all creatures. Understanding Groot is not hard at all.”
“It’s official, I am moving here.” Rocket said.
   “Rocket, no.” Gamora sighed.
“Oh come on! Have you seen the technology here? This guy and his people are geniuses!” Rocket turned to T’challa, falling onto his knees. “Your highness, please let me stay here in Wakanda with the lovely machines and the beautiful women who could kick my ass to next Tuesday.”
“You are making a fool of yourself,” Drax shook his head. “Stop begging.”
“I will beg as long as I have too. Please, let me stay here!”
“Rocket, let go of the king’s leg!”
   “Never!”
   “GODDAMNIT ROCKET!”

Earth’s Mightiest Retrospective Ep 26: “A Day Unlike Any Other”
Tumblr media
(Directed by Sebastian Montes, Written by Christopher Yost, Original Airdate: June 26, 2011)
It’s been a long journey so far, and I’m technically still only halfway done, but it feels so satisfying to reach the finale of Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes season one. “A Day Unlike Any Other” opens strong with a wordless pre-titles sequence of the Avengers preparing to do battle in Asgard against Loki and his forces. The heroes’ actions in this sequence get set against Loki donning royal accoutrements and preparing a round of executing the Asgardians that have been standing against his rule with Thor soon to be on the chopping block. Two things that stand out most in this cold open are Giant Man and Wasp decked out in Asgardian armor that makes them look more like their Silver Age selves and Tony still in Nidavellir forging a new suit of armor alongside the dwarves.
This episode is top-to-bottom action with the assembled heroes fighting alongside the allies they’ve managed to make since arriving in the Nine Realms. The action begins in earnest with all the Avengers, sans Iron Man, Captain America and Thor, fighting on Asgard’s rainbow bridge against the forces Loki has gathered through his conquest to stop anyone from entering the city. Seeing the Avengers participate into a full fantasy war in this setting marks a major highlight for the season overall, especially as the episode goes on and the threats Loki throws at them get bigger.
In-between the scenes of combat, we’re shown that Cap is still in Niflheim bargaining with Hela for a way out so he can finish his mission to stop the Masters of Evil. The Goddess of Death catches Cap up on how Loki is the real threat he needs to worry about and the one his friends are facing now. Doubting her father’s loyalty to her should he prevail, Hela does agree to send Steve into the battle on one condition. If he falls in battle, she gets his soul.
Captain America’s reunion with the Avengers happens right on time as the Avengers face down one of Loki’s strongest weapons, the Hoarfen the Frost Wolf, a beast larger than any Frost Giant. They do take down the beast together with Cap giving the order, as Loki watches and Thor tells his brother how they’ve both underestimated the strength of mortals. Thor calling back to his attitude at the start of the series is a fantastic way to bring his part in the season full circle. He thought he alone had the strength to protect humanity from large scale threats and learned better through his missions with the Avengers. The team busts through to the palace and confronts the Odinforce-empowered Loki. He sees all the heroes of Earth as utterly beneath him at his current power-level, the World-Tree Yggdrasil feeding it to him. Loki emphasizes that point by using his magic to shatter Captain America’s shield.
The God of Mischief thinks twice about that when Iron Man makes his grand return in armor made of Uru-metal, the same as Thor’s hammer. It’s a good design, all grey and simultaneously reminiscent of the Mark I armor and the Destroyer armor from Thor’s comic book mythos. The armor gives Tony enough power to stand against Loki while the rest of the team finally free Thor and formulate a plan to separate Loki from Odin’s power. It’s a strong showcase for how far the team has come in terms of working together and how they’ve made the best out of being stranded across the Nine Realms.
While the rest of the team keeps Loki busy, Black Panther, Hawkeye, and Giant Man use Panther’s ability to trace magic to find Yggdrasil, the World Tree now wilting from how much power Loki has drained from it. They cut Loki’s connection to the Odinforce by uprooting the dying tree, leaving space for a new one to grow in its place. This allows Odin to awaken and confront his adopted son over the evil of his actions throughout the season. The All-Father promising Loki’s new punishment will be far worse than the banishment he received back in “Thor the Mighty.” He’s not exaggerating as the punishment is a direct reference to Loki’s fate from Norse mythology, bound below a giant serpent to forever has its poison dripping into his eyes.
The events on Asgard end as Thor tells everyone his mortal allies are the ones most worthy of praise for Loki’s defeat. Seeing the heroes earn the respect of the immortal beings that have been underestimating them over the last two episodes makes “A Day Unlike Any Other” a strong place to end the season. The overall storyline, from the events with the Masters of Evil and the Norn Stones to the final confrontation with Loki bring in so much of what made this season work that make the bumps along the way with some of the season’s occasionally clumsy storytelling easier to forgive. The way Loki is back into the reason the Avengers initially assembled makes a strong tie to where the team started before seeing how far they’ve come.
There’ll be plenty more intrigue to dive into in Earth’s Mightiest Heroes season 2. Made immediately apparent as this season ends on the cliffhanger of Captain America, while reflecting on the deal he made with Hela, getting ambushed by a Skrull impersonator who tells his superiors, “The Infiltration has begun.”
Resolution on that will have to wait, because season two begins not with a secret invasion, but with DOOM!

Building Jon Gruden’s Tennessee the best circa-2008 NFL coaching staff
You want Gruden? Why not go all in on the best NFL coaching staff money could buy nearly a decade ago?
Jon Gruden has not coached a football team since 2008. That year, his Tampa Bay Buccaneers went 9-7, finished third in their division, and missed out on the playoffs.
It was also the year Tennessee parted with long-time coach Phil Fulmer.
In the post-Fulmer era, the Tennessee job has opened four times, including right now.
Every time, Gruden is heavily linked to the job.
2008: Gruden says taking Tennessee job isn't in his future, by ESPN.
2010: Jon Gruden turns down Tennessee's advances, by the Sporting News.
2012: Jon Gruden tells Vols he's not interested in coaching position, by CBS Sports. Gruden's agent calls the entire Gruden-to-Vols rumor-industrial complex "just a fantasy world."
This time is no different.
Respected Vols writer John Brice reported the Vols have more of a chance now than they ever have before. And Stephen Hargis of the Chattanooga Times Free Press added Gruden’s put out some feelers to potential staff members.
"Jon Gruden is reaching out to folks that he knows and trusts to find out & gauge their interest in joining a potential staff to take over at Tennessee" - @StephenHargis #Grumors http://pic.twitter.com/c0mlsz3eJ4
— Paul Finebaum (@finebaum) November 15, 2017
Reports to the contrary persist, but let’s be positive here.
So when it comes to building a staff, I’ve done the work for Jon.
If the Vols are so hellbent on turning the clock back to 2008 NFL retreads, you might as well go all in with a whole staff. Below is a list of names.
The one rule:
We’re ignoring what these coaches have done since 2008.
Offensive coordinator
Lane Kiffin, recently fired Oakland Raiders head coach
A good spot to place a 2008 up-and-comer here, and a good spot for someone who needs his first second chance. We’d have two former Raiders head coaches on staff (always a plus), and if something disadvantageous were to happen to Gruden, we could promote Kiffin to interim, no problem. Will surely follow all NCAA rules in Knoxville and stick around for a while.
(Actual current job: FAU head coach and social media innovator.)
Running backs coach
Jim Skipper, Carolina Panthers
The Panthers had two running backs in 2008’s top 10 of yards per rushing attempt. DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart were at the beginning of their powerful backfield tandem. I’ll take their tutor to coach up the likes of John Kelly (should he return to school next season) and Ty Chandler (who already looks quite promising).
(Actual current job: Skipper left the Panthers and did work in Tennessee, for the Titans, before returning to the Panthers.)
Wide receivers coach
Mike Miller, Arizona Cardinals
Miller coached the tandem of Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin. Both were in the league’s top-10 in receptions. No better tutor for budding talent Marquez Callaway.
(Actual current job: Robert Morris University OC.)
Offensive line coach
Mike Munchak, Tennessee Titans
A household name with many Vols fans! By 2008, Munchak had been the offensive line coach for over a decade, and the only OL coach in the franchise’s Nashville history.
(Actual current job: Steelers OL coach.)
Co-defensive coordinator
Rex Ryan, Baltimore Ravens
Ryan’s thought of as an NFL guy, but he coached at Cincinnati, Oklahoma, and Kansas State from 1996-1999 before leaving for the Ravens. He also began his career at Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State (plus New Mexico Highlands), all of which gives him more experience working with college athletes and working in the general region than his new head coach has.
(Actual current job: ESPN analyst, just like Gruden!)
Co-defensive coordinator
Monte Kiffin, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
You want a multiple defense? Ryan brings the boom with aggressive blitzes, and the elder Kiffin revolutionized the Cover 2 with his state-of-the-art Tampa 2 variation. It fueled the Bucs to that Super Bowl title that is Gruden’s calling card. And it brings the whole Kiffin family together; what could possibly go wrong?
(Actual current job: FAU defensive assistant.)
Defensive line coach
John Mitchell, Pittsburgh Steelers
Has SEC chops, having coached at Alabama, LSU, and Arkansas (albeit when the Hogs were still in the Southwest Conference). Was the first black person to play for Alabama, and the first to coach for the Tide as well, and beat Tennessee twice in the Third Saturday in October rivalry as a player.
(Actual current job: Still there.)
Linebackers coach
Gus Bradley, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Gruden can pull from his previous staff in Tampa. Bradley learned from Monte with the Bucs.
(Actual current job: Chargers DC.)
Secondary coach
Dom Capers, New England Patriots
Capers is a lifer at both levels, with 11 years of college experience, more than twice as much as Gruden. He was a graduate assistant in 1973 with Nick Saban, and Capers also has a tie to Tennessee. He coached there in 1980 and 1981 as a DBs coach under the legendary Johnny Majors. That’s two more years than Gruden coached on staff at Tennessee (Gruden was a GA).
(Actual current job: Packers DC.)
A note about the elephant in the room
How’s this coaching staff gonna do? Well, if the recent history of Tennessee football is any indication, it’s on track for 8-4 or so.
But as is always the issue with NFL coaches coming to college, will these assistants be able to recruit? Well, we’ll see. But it’s gonna be pretty fun to watch them try, given their head coach’s ethos:
“Too many rules, man. I mean I like to work. I don’t like to be working 15 hours a week with players. The recruiting, Facebook, texting, e-mails – all that stuff. Yeah, I’d probably have you in real deep, deep trouble if I was your college coach.”

so i’m watching black panther again since i’ve been thinking about shuri since last night.
and i have to say that you know at the beginning of the movie when t’chaka’s ship is leaving after confronting n’jobu in oakland and the kids see the lights of the ship leaving back to wakanda.
and i know that was set in 1992, and i know that aliens are a thing in the mcu, like they exist, i get it.
but i can’t help but think that some of the ufo sightings in the mcu are actually just wakandan spacecraft and shuri just in her lab laughing at people for thinking it’s all alien technology because no one on earth could create anything like that.
