Preseason Tips

FRC Preseason has officially begun, and many teams are already working hard with preparation and skill-building to make build season the most productive it could be. For a new rookie team, preseason can seem daunting. How can you prepare for something that is still many months away? We interviewed some girls on different FRC technical subteams about the most important piece of advice they would give to rookie teams about preseason. Based on the different areas they specialize in, each girl has separate ideas about what would make a team’s preparation successful and productive. 

Claire, technical project manager: “Training the new girls is the most important part, because if we don’t, we are missing out on ⅖ of the team’s capabilities.”

Anna, mechanical team member: “Refining skills is really important because we can get rusty over summer, and we have to make sure skills are on point for build season.”

Teadora, electronics lead: “The most important part of preseason is making sure girls are trained and familiar with tools so they can use it in build season. That way they get practice, and no bad habits are formed.”

Abbey, design lead: “Preseason is perfect to learn new skills, because it is the most relaxed time to learn. It’s really good to be prepared for build season.”

Anna, business project manager: “It’s a chance to be express the business aspect of running a team, which you don’t get to do in build season.”

Up to 20 million manufacturing jobs around the world could be replaced by robots by 2030, according to analysis firm Oxford Economics. People displaced from those jobs are likely to find that comparable roles in the services sector have also been squeezed by automation, the firm said. Today’s Rookie FIRST segment features inclusion, a principle of Girls of Steel that got largely more impactful this past year with the new addition of our Inclusion subteam. The focus of this subteam is to encourage and foster diversity in not only Girls of Steel, but also the wider FIRST community as a whole. A prominent goal was making sure that everyone, regardless of demographics, had access to FIRST opportunities and felt welcome in the field.

In the Inclusion subteam, the girls used graphics and data to strengthen their research on representation in the FIRST community. To ensure the most inclusive environment within our team, we filled out anonymous surveys at the beginning and end of preseason that address our concerns or improvements to make the team as strong and unified as possible! Additionally, an anonymous suggestion box was always open for the team to implement if need be. Finally, one of the most effective additions to improving inclusion in Girls of Steel was through a big/little program. FTC and younger FRC girls were partnered with a more experienced FRC girl. The bigs served as resources and familiar faces to the littles; they helped guide the littles through the season, which can sometimes seem overwhelming. Every few weeks after all-hands, we had short games that we played in our big/little groups as bonding. There was also a points system to encourage interaction outside of just the meeting. Points could be gained from doing outreach together, attending GoS events together, and doing other fun activities together. This program was extremely successful in making sure younger girls felt more connected and involved in the larger team as a whole!

Amazon Says That They’re Just A Decade Away From Fully Robotic Shipping Warehouses

Amazon recently got some complaints when the Verge revealed it utilized a method that automatically defines the productivity rates of its warehouse workforce, and discharges slowpokes if they are too slow to move bundles. It was yet another indication that mechanization was taking over at Amazon and an especially menacing one at that. Robots in the workforce are proficient mostly at distinct and repeatable tasks for which they are programmed precisely. For the robot to do something else takes costly, time-consuming reprogramming. Moreover, robots which can perform multiple different tasks and function in dynamic environments that require the robot to view and understand its surroundings are still firmly in the domain of research and experimental trials. "There is a fallacy in the initial understanding of 'Are we going to become a lights-out fulfillment network in the Upcoming few years'" Anderson told Reuters. “In the current form, the technology is very limited. The technology is very far from the fully automated workstation that we would need.” He explained that technology would not reach to that point for about another 10 years--which, from his standpoint in the technology business, is a reasonably long time. To the 100,000 plus people working in Amazon's fulfillment facilities, and to the regional markets and social systems which need to deal with such a massive rush of automated-out-of-work workers, it might not seem like such a prolix timeline. If Amazon and its rivals automate their warehouse operations from 10 years, that means around 1 million unskilled jobs gone, with nowhere clear to replace them. According to Reuters, Amazon has 110 warehouses in the US, 45 sorting facilities, and approximately 50 delivery stations, all of which employ more than 125,000 full-time warehouse workers. However, only a portion of the work operates by robots. Right now, robots are too imprecise and awkward and need an excessive amount of training to be set up on factory floors outside quite rare use cases. However, warehouse automation is coming, whether it allows for 'dark' human-free services in a decade or even not. It is another instance where automation could undoubtedly yield major societal benefits. By all counts, Amazon warehouse work is exhausting, obnoxious, even dangerous labor. In other words, if we are ready to restrain it correctly, And spread the benefits beyond a managerial level that stands to supervise the forthcoming wave of machines. Right now, we're not.      Aster Arcade was grand, more impressive than she could’ve imagined. From the variety of games to prizes, it was definitely a hotspot for this troublemaker. After all, if she can earn candy from playing video games, who wouldn’t give it a shot? Most of her time was spent on a shooter game-- she had the skills thanks to her magic, after all. With a pile of tickets by her side, she was gaining them at a steady pace, but there had to be a better method..?

     ...This game was two-player, she noted. And you know what that means: a chance to make even twice the amount she was making now!

     “Care for a match? Don’t get your hopes up at beating me though. I’m the champion.” It’s uncertain whether that was the truth or she was bluffing. Still, waving the boy over, she was already starting up the second player’s controller. Looks like he doesn’t have a choice whether or not to join!
