The young rioter surveyed the scene. A bus and a car blazed on O’Connell Bridge while masked groups marauded across the city centre looting shops, attacking police and shooting fireworks, turning the air acrid.

A police helicopter hovered and officers with shields and batons were assembling at the far end of O’Connell Street but the heart of Dublin, for now, belonged to the young man in a black hoodie who started to dance in the glow of the flames.

Comrades cheered as he punched the air and jigged to a soundtrack of breaking glass, shouts and sirens. He held his arms aloft like Rocky and paused, mesmerised by the mayhem. “Beautiful,” he said. “Fuck-ing beautiful.”

For other people in Ireland and elsewhere who saw images of Thursday’s anarchy it was the night Dublin went mad. For participants it was the night the city came to its senses – that here was an overdue venting of rage, a reckoning.

Ireland, according to this narrative, has opened the floodgates to foreigners with no controls or checks, leaving rapists and murderers to prowl the streets, and no one – not the government, not opposition parties, not the media, not the police – is taking it seriously.

So when social media rumours attributed a horrific stabbing attack on three children and a creche worker to a foreigner – Algerian, Moroccan, Romanian, versions varied – groups descended on Parnell Square, the scene of the crime, and decided to unleash chaos.

“People need to fight for this country,” said Samantha, a 27-year-old mother, as masked youths clashed with police attempting to retake Eden Quay along the River Liffey. “I’m not racist; I don’t mind people coming in if they respect Irish people. But the likes of the toerags coming into this country – they’re not vetted and are causing havoc.”

The unfolding scenes, in contrast, were legitimate havoc, a corrective to a political establishment impervious to previous protests over rising numbers of asylum seekers, said Samantha. “When we do things peacefully we get ignored.” She had left her five-year-old at home without dinner in order to join the revolt, she said. “I’m out here fighting for my country. We shouldn’t have to do this.”

Others echoed the refrain: to make Ireland safe, wreck the capital.

“It’s not right but it had to be done. The government is not listening,” said one man in his 20s, a bystander rather than a looter. “This isn’t against foreigners. We were the first emigrants. Immigrants are driving our buses, cleaning our hospitals – we need them. But they need to be vetted.”

Ireland’s demography has been transformed in recent decades as a booming economy reversed the historical flow of emigration. A fifth of the 5 million people now living in Ireland were born elsewhere. A recent increase in refugees from Ukraine and other countries fuelled a backlash amid concern over a housing shortage and straining public services. The number housed by the state jumped from 7,500 in 2021 to 73,000 in 2022.

Amid the destruction on Thursday night there was some linguistic nuance, with “non-national” usually preferred to “foreigner”, and “unvetted” or “unregulated” preferred to “illegal”, and an aversion to the label “far right”.

There was nothing subtle about the targeting of police. Bottles, bricks, fireworks and other missiles rained down on officers, many of whom lacked helmets and shields. The crowd cornered and attacked isolated officers, leaving several injured. Eleven police vehicles were damaged.

Journalists too were unwelcome and photographers had to conceal cameras. “He’s with the Guardian,” a man in his 60s, holding a tricolour, shouted. Younger, hooded men formed an intimidating cluster. The worst sin was to be with RTÉ, the national broadcaster, or the liberal Irish Times, which were accused of cheering the “replacement” of Irish people by new arrivals.

Many onlookers were appalled. “It’s heartbreaking for Dublin, for Ireland, for Europe,” said Matthew Butler, 28. A 53-year-old postman who gave his name only as John expressed fury. “Just a bunch of scumbags out to wreck Dublin city. The gardaí [police] should have free rein to beat the shit out of them.”

On Friday, Leo Varadkar, the taoiseach, said the rioters had shamed themselves and Ireland. “I want to say to a nation that is unsettled and afraid: this is not who we are – this is not who we want to be – and this is not who we will ever be.” The Garda commissioner, Drew Harris, blamed the disturbances on a “lunatic, hooligan faction driven by far-right ideology”.

The mob had diverse motives. Some belonged to fringe political groups and were veterans of protests against refugee centres. Some were opportunistic gangs that seized the chance to loot sportswear and alcohol. Others came for the spectacle and the chance to post dramatic footage on social media.

All, however, scorned the idea that Ireland is a safe, stable society. The economy is at full employment and the state is flush with tax revenue but their social media feeds depict a country overrun with “non-native” predators such as Jozef Puska, a Slovak man convicted earlier this month of murdering a teacher, Ashling Murphy, in 2022. As the night wore on, an unfounded rumour spread that one of the children in the Parnell Square attack had died.

It did not seem to matter that one of the people who stopped that attack was a Brazilian Deliveroo rider, Caio Benicio, and that Dublin gangs have assaulted numerous South American couriers in recent years.

Chilling threats of assaults against immigrants were made on a WhatsApp group titled “enough is enough”. “Everyone bally [balaclava] up, tool up,” said one man. “Let’s show the fucking media that we’re not a fucking pushover, that no more fucking foreigners are allowed into this poxy country.”

However, the mob targeted property and police rather than foreign and non-white bystanders, who watched in bewilderment.

As police gradually regained control James, a 33-year-old labourer, confronted a phalanx of shields on Burgh Quay, drawing cheers from others who hurled missiles. After being sprayed in the face, James staggered back to Butt Bridge where a Brazilian man, who had experience of being teargassed in his home country, offered recovery tips.

James thanked him but in an interview said “unregulated” arrivals were ruining Ireland. “We’re rammed to the gills with foreigners doing mad shit. You can’t do this to Irish people. I’m getting out of this country, I’m burning rubber. It’s not safe to walk around here.”

Mohammed Gaber, 27, an accountant who moved to Ireland from Sudan and is now an Irish citizen, came into the city centre to check on his sister, Ebba. He lauded his adopted home but worried about what the riot might augur. “Irish people are so welcoming. I’ve never experienced any discrimination. But this is crazy. This is the first time that I feel that there is something big.”

With roads sealed off and smoke pluming over Dublin, Ebba, 33, was blunter. “This is terrifying.” She was not sure of reaching her job as an emergency doctor at a police station.

BBC Sherlock is picking up where Casablanca left off. “The stage is set, the curtain rises, we are ready to begin…” Which is important, because before it was a film, Casablanca was an unproduced play.

First, I’d like to give credit to @deducingbbcsherlock for the original meta about John on the tarmac: ( x ) This post, is a follow-up of sorts, in that it deals with what happens afterward, and how we all land.

Take into account, that when Casablanca was made, the people we now think of as refugees, were still living the events. The film did create a rallying for those same people, and included refugees in its scenes. The LGBTQA+ viewers hoping for representation are the Sherlock refugees.

I included the images above, because of the blue/slightly rainbow lighting effect that occurs in the scenes, and due to pondering why they were having Mycroft watching an old movie (which we know was made for the show). Blue lights invariably spring up around anything involving Sherlock and John’s hearts (especially phones, bombs, and police lights). In the scene from T6T, the blue lights mimic a runway. In the first of the two images from TFP, after Sherlock breaks down the fourth wall, it even looks like he is coming down from a plane ramp.

From a previous piece I worked on:

Lights and Landing. I keep thinking it’s going to /come down/ to lights. On ASiB, Flight 007, the lights were out, and Nobody (TLD/Nemo TFP) was home (because they were all dead). During the stag night, Sherlock and John are drinking by a table, where Sherlock’s (heart) phone is left glowing blue next to four candles. If we’re still on the roof of TRF, John had his lights knocked out, but only after he and Sherlock escaped the police with their blue lights. In TEH, the lights are on the (heart) bomb. In HLV, Sherlock shoots Magnussen, and then a huge light lands on him from the helicopter. In TAB, Sherlock’s lights kept going out. In the flight of T6T, again everyone’s lights are out, except John’s. In TLD, Sherlock figures out the issue of the illuminated Miss Me from Eurus’s note, in the same way he noticed Help Me on the wall when Anderson missed it (which is also the text Sherlock sent Lestrade in TSoT that then results in blue lights through 221B’s curtains). In TFP, the little girl mentions seeing lights right before Sherlock figures out the code to locate John. We already know there is this recurring issue of projectors/projections/premonitions.

Which is why I don’t think it’s an accident that we go from the Casablanca-style scenes in HLV and TAB, to Sherlock and John beating Mary Rosemund to Morocco, in T6T. At the beginning of T6T, Sherlock says, ““I’m the target. Targets wait.” “How did you find me?” Mary asks. “I’m Sherlock Holmes,” he shrugs. He waited. For John. For her. There were premonitions...

Also, it works with the scenario of Victor Lazlo. Early in the movie, Victor Laszlo acquires a large scar over his left eye. The reason for the scar's existence is never addressed in the movie. Likewise, @inevitably-johnlocked surmised that John has lost his left eye ( x ) In TFP, as a child, Eurus always has brown eyes--except in the scene where she is lighting the match. In that scene, it’s blue. I never understood why, until this.

The water scenarios we keep getting in S4, and the idea of TD-12 or a coma causing this to all be misinformation or somehow incorrect.

Captain Renault: What in heaven's name brought you to Casablanca?

Rick: My health. I came to Casablanca for the waters.

Captain Renault: The waters? What waters? We're in the desert.

Rick: I was misinformed.

We’ve already had a parallel between Rick and Sherlock from TGG, albeit in reverse.

Rick: And remember, this gun is pointed right at your heart.

Captain Renault: That is my *least* vulnerable spot.

Then, there’s John as Ilsa. A blonde married to a blonde, pining over a dark-haired man that is represented as anti-social. Renault has the ability to mirror Sherlock or John.

Ilsa: It's about a girl who had just come to Paris from her home in Oslo. At the house of some friends, she met a man about whom she'd heard her whole life. A very great and courageous man. He opened up for her a whole beautiful world full of knowledge and thoughts and ideals. Everything she knew or ever became was because of him. And she looked up to him and worshiped him... with a feeling she supposed was love.

Now, we come to the parallels between the tarmac scene and TFP:

“Another well-known story is that the actors did not know until the last day of shooting how the film was to end. (Delayed Sherlock scripts, and actors saying they didn’t know in advance where their story arcs were going.) In the case of Casablanca, this was later refuted... The original play (set entirely in the cafe) ended with Rick sending Ilsa and Laszlo to the airport. During scriptwriting, the possibility was discussed of Laszlo being killed in Casablanca, allowing Rick and Ilsa to leave together, but as Casey Robinson wrote to Hal Wallis before filming began, the ending of the film "set up for a swell twist when Rick sends her away on the plane with Laszlo. For now, in doing so, he is not just solving a love triangle. He is forcing the girl to live up to the idealism of her nature, forcing her to carry on with the work that in these days is far more important than the love of two little people." (Remember, John is Ilsa) It was certainly impossible for Ilsa to leave Laszlo for Rick, as the production code forbade showing a woman leaving her husband for another man. (Much like the film code prevented TPLOSH from having Holmes and Watson as a gay couple). The concern was not whether Ilsa would leave with Laszlo, but how this result could be engineered. The problem was solved when the Epstein brothers, Julius and Philip, were driving down Sunset Boulevard and stopped for the light at Beverly Glen. At that instant the identical twins turned to each other and simultaneously cried out, "Round up the usual suspects!" (Which is literally what they did in S4, especially TFP. The key players are all rounded up, and we have our twins reference) By the time they had driven past Fairfax and the Cahuenga Pass and through the Warner Brothers studio's portals at Burbank, in the words of Julius Epstein, "the idea for the farewell scene between a tearful Bergman and a suddenly noble Bogart" had been formed and all the problems of the ending had been solved.” (No loose ends...)

That issue of the Prime Minister, that came up in T6T? In the original play (the curtain rises, the scene is set), the correct PM is written: Weygand. In the subtitles for the English DVDs, it says De Gaulle. At the time of the film, he was head of the Free French government in exile, so a letter signed by him would have provided no benefit.

In the scene where Lazlo begins the national anthem, La Marseillaise, these are the lyrics:

Arise, children of the Fatherland! The day of glory has arrived! Against us, tyranny raises its bloody banner. Do you hear, in the countryside, the roar of those ferocious soldiers? They’re coming to your land to cut the throats of your women and children!

To arms, citizens! Form your battalions! Let’s march, let’s march! Let their impure blood water our fields!

John in TFP: Today, we have to be soldiers, Mycroft, soldiers. And that means to hell with what happens to us!

Sherlock: Soldiers.

John: Soldiers.

Going back to the first image, look at the name of the bar. The Attic. Where does Sherlock locate Eurus? In the attic (last image)...

Tellingly, this is what Umberto Eco said of the film (which originally, had a solid opening, but nothing meteoric) "Thus Casablanca is not just one film. It is many films, an anthology. Made haphazardly, it probably made itself, if not actually against the will of its authors and actors, then at least beyond their control. And this is the reason it works, in spite of aesthetic theories and theories of film making. For in it there unfolds with almost telluric force the power of Narrative in its natural state, without Art intervening to discipline it....When all the archetypes burst in shamelessly, we reach Homeric depths. Two clichés make us laugh. A hundred clichés move us. For we sense dimly that the clichés are talking among themselves, and celebrating a reunion. Eco also singled out sacrifice as one of the film's key themes: "the myth of sacrifice runs through the whole film." It was this theme which resonated with a wartime audience that was reassured by the idea that painful sacrifice and going off to war could be romantic gestures done for the greater good. (We’re back the Greek references that permeated S4, the status of Anteros at the beginning of the opening credits to the show, and the overall reception from viewers of TFP.)

Also, remember Mark saying: “I’m a gay man. This is not an issue. But we’ve explicitly said this is not going to happen—there is no game plan—no matter how much we lie about other things, that this show is going to culminate in Martin and Benedict going off into the sunset together.” Well, if John as Ilsa has vacated the premises, and left that part of himself with Mary, it makes sense. Because, at the end of Casablanca, Rick walks off into the fog with Captain(!) Renault.

Regarding the clues we’ve been getting about 6, 40, & 27. In the summer of 1940, the 27-year-old teacher Murray completed the play in six weeks with the collaboration of Joan Alison. It was never shown as such until London in 1991, for 6 weeks.

Chapter 27

At the evening the superheroes met in the room of Adrien Agreste all sitting on the couch looking at the TV screen as they were doing a voice call with Master Wang Fu.

“I’m the worst boyfriend in the entire world. I’m the worst boyfriend in the story of the worst boyfriends,” Super Nathan blurted out disappointed dropping his head on Honey Bee’s shoulder, which felt bad for her friend and caressed her friend on his cheek.

“No, you’re not.” Honey Bee told the redhead. “You’re the best she has ever had”

“Nathaniel, try to stay positive. Lila wouldn’t want you to get akumatized,” Viperion told the boy, that sat on the couch. “She’s out there somewhere, she’s fine, she just needs her lone time and to process everything that has happened”

“But, what if she got akumatized?”Super Nathan asked widening his eyes, making Viperion shook his head.

“Impossible, if she was akumatized we would have seen her causing mayhem or dealing with us”

“But Nathaniel could be right, what if Lila already got akumatized?” Lady Red asked looking at the superheroes beside her. “What if she got akumatized while wearing her miraculous? Her powers could be way more dangerous”

“What if we have to fight against her when akumatized?” Asked Super Nathan worried. “I can’t fight my own girlfriend!” Super Nathan said pushing on his hair.

“Nathaniel, pull yourself together!” Viperion ordered moving the boy on the shoulder, shaking him back and forth quickly.

“Scolding Nathaniel about his distress isn’t helping anyone either” Lady Red warned the group.

“Let’s try to discuss the plan. We’ve been here for twenty minutes and the major part of the time we just heard Super Nathan blaming himself for her disappearance” Marinette asked then Super Nathan got up to walk at the window of Adrien’s room to stare at the foggy sky. Marinette sighed and walked up at the boy, then placed her hand behind his back. “Look I didn’t mean to upset you more than you are right now, but you know we have to discuss this, even if Lila’s not around”

“I know” Super Nathan said leaning his forehead on the glass. “It’s just hard for me to deal with”

“We will find her, I promise” The blue-haired girl promised the redhead, that nodded with a sad expression at the girl.

“About that with Monarch or Nathalie...should we just head out the other day at her house or what do you suggest, Master?” Cat Noir asked looking at the screen along with the other superheroes.

“The best solution for the moment would be waiting, until we find out, where Miss Vixen is and if she’s fine or if she is now in the hands of Monarch” Master Fu answered making Cat Noir nod.

“But why don’t we just get to her house, if we know, where she is?” The bee miraculous holder asked.

“The problem is with Miss Vixen on her side, she could easily take us all down and get the miraculouses.” Master Fu explained. “It’s too risky”

“She would never stab us in the back!” Super Nathan announced loud.

“Of course she wouldn’t do that Nath, but the Monarch is able to do anything to avoid a victim to fight for his freedom,” Marinette said to her classmate, that was annoyed, that going out to fight Monarch wasn’t a solution.

“But can’t we do something against it?” Asked Super Nathan. “I can just sit here and wait for news”

“Nath we don’t have another choice” Mentioned Honey Bee. “We need to wait”

“Listen to Rose, we now gotta wait for a while, but I assure you when we know about her anything we will immediately handle” Viperion promised walking against the boy. “I will assist you,” Viperion told placing his hands on his shoulders looking deep into his eyes. Super Nathan during his friend’s gaze shook his head and turned around, then opened the window.

“Nathaniel, what are you going to do?” Asked Viperion watching Super Nathan jump at the arc of the window.

“There is nothing more to discuss. You can all wait here if you want, but I’m going to look for her, first I stop by her house and afterward I keep looking for her”

“She wasn’t in her house yet, nor were her parents” Lady Red mentioned.

“Then I’ll be looking around the city, even if I spend the whole night looking for her without resting my eyes” Super Nathan said holding his tablet in front of him, restoring his jetpack from the gallery.

“Nathaniel, don’t go” Lady Red warned getting up from the couch.

“Stop being stubborn. You’re getting yourself in trouble!” Viperion warned watching Super Nathan take off, flying across the city. “Ugh,” Viperion said covering his face, then Marinette placed her hands on his, making him look down at her face.

“I think we should leave him for now,” Marinette said. “There’s no way to convince him otherwise”

Viperion sighed, then looked back at the superhero team, that had all the eyes on the snake-themed miraculous holder.

“We’re staying all on alert tonight. If something happens, we all roll out, is this clear?.”

“Yes,” The superheroes responded. Viperion looked back out of the window, where his friend had left and rolled his eyes down in sadness.

The next morning the class of Miss Bustier sat at the end of the break in the classroom of her on their seats. Kagami sat on her seat next to Ivan with Kim, Nino and Max in front of her table.

„You didn‘t really know Lila was Miss Vixen all along?“ Asked Kim glancing at the Japanese student.

„How many times are you going to ask me the same question, Kim?“ Kagami asked glaring up at him. „I already told you, that I didn‘t know that“

„I just find it a little strange, that since you two are best friends, that she never told you anything about it“

„She didn‘t say it, because it could have put our lives in danger or her family‘s.“ Kagami added. „I find that she did keep it a secret from all of us is good“

„I think she did it right, imagine Monarch would have found out, that Lila went here with us to school and she would trap us or worse...“ Nino mentioned earning a nod from Max.

„The chances, that Monarch finds out about us is at 50%. She would most likely want to look for the other superheroes.“

Believe it or not, when Lucy Fenton, owner of Fenton & Fenton, and her husband Josh Markey, purchased this Malvern home four years ago, she described the property as ‘a little lacklustre’… Clearly, this is no longer the case! 

Despite not making any structural changes to the property since moving in, Lucy has placed her distinct stamp on the home through cosmetic tweaks, vibrant furnishings and homewares, and plenty of colour! ‘We had the floors sanded back to a blonde finish – they were previously a dark walnut stain,’ says Lucy, describing one of the most significant updates made. ‘We also replaced the carpet and repainted throughout. The house was all white inside and we wanted to bring it to life. We started with paint!

A different paint colour has been chosen for almost every room to facilitate various moods. The sophisticated dark grey shade with blue undertones in the front room lends this space a formal atmosphere, while the peachy main bedroom inspires a sense of fun and optimism. ‘Colour is everything in our house,’ Lucy says. ‘It makes the house feel more cosy and each room feels really inviting.’ The main living rooms are painted in Dulux Natural White, creating an ideal contrast between the quieter and communal spaces. ‘We love being able to enjoy the best of both worlds,’ Lucy says. 

There’s also plenty of colour on show in the furnishings of this home – and an ever changing display of art and homewares! The majority of the items are sourced via Lucy’s own store (please note the extensive credits in the image captions!) along with an eclectic assortment of pieces collected on travels. ‘Choosing what comes home from the store is an ongoing battle,’ Lucy says. ‘There are so many more pieces I would have loved to have kept over the years, but by doing regular rearrangements, I can usually find the perfect spot for most things I really fall in love with!’

This is a family home first and foremost, and Lucy hopes this is reflected in its style and feel. While thoroughly stylish, the house retains plenty of space for Pepa (7) and Woody (4) to ride their scooters down the hallway, spread Lego across the floor, and play in the backyard. ‘It feels like our sanctuary away from the mayhem. It is just a really comfortable family home.’ Lucy says, ‘It tells a story of who we are.’
