After a month of glorious silence, Meghan’s back — as wronged and stoic as ever

Because I always strive to be a happy little elf, I will start with the happy news. It’s been four weeks, nearly a whole month of glorious silence, since the last episode of Meghan’s podcast.
To recap, previous episodes proved to be the most persuasive argument ever heard for living off-grid. The Duchess of Sussex delayed the next one until the official mourning period for the Queen was over and, to be fair, a month without Meghan is surely what the Queen would have wanted.
But all good things must come to an end and now she’s back, as wronged and stoic as ever, telling the sad truths we must all take on board if we are to become better people. Or something. I won’t lie, these are tough times to be a happy little elf, although the news this week that she employs a fact-checker on the podcast is beyond parody and cheered me up no end. Is one enough? Will she ever develop the ability to fact-check before she opens her mouth?

In this episode, she starts strongly, if incomprehensibly, with ghormeh and larb. Apparently they’re foodstuffs. Her guest is Margaret Cho, a successful Asian-American actress, activist and comedian. Cho has many interesting things to say about the perceptions and stereotypes surrounding Asian-American women, and whole seconds go by in which she is allowed to say them uninterrupted.
Ultimately, though, it falls to Meghan to point out that “all people” are multidimensional and layered, although no mention of elves, which makes me wonder if I am truly seen. She also confides that she loves Los Angeles because it is “full of culture”, which makes me sad, not happy, because if only we had some culture of our own, maybe she’d have stuck around.
It’s been a busy time for the Sussexes. Watching the Queen’s funeral, did they recall hitting back at her with the jibe “Everyone can live a life of service”? Probably not. The brand building is going brilliantly, though, or at least better than that tin-eared visit to a Californian cemetery on Remembrance Sunday.
Only yesterday, in a last desperate plea for privacy, they released new photographs of themselves. Meghan goes for smouldering stateswoman. Harry, bless him, manages something closer to gormless or, in the word of royal biographer Hugo Vickers, sad.

Back home in California, there are reports that they’re trying to row back on the Netflix documentary that pays the mortgage, and that Harry is frantically trying to tone down his memoir now that his father is King. He might be panicking because it’s too mean about Camilla, as some suspect, or he might just want to bring it bang up to date with all the many slights he no doubt feels they suffered while they were here. Some were uniform related, as they always are.
My favourite is the story that Meghan had to be banned from going to Scotland, a country she usually flies straight over. Just this summer, the couple allegedly declined to holiday at Balmoral, when the Queen was still alive, but perhaps the fact-checker can get to the bottom of it.
They’ve parted ways from their American PR company, Sunshine Sachs, which successfully remained in their employment for more than half an hour and deserves a long-service medal with the P45. And they appear to have suffered the indignity of being NFI to the launch of George and Amal Clooney’s charitable foundation.
For legal reasons, we must consider the possibility that they were invited but chose not to go, before snorting into our tea and proceeding. The event featured exactly the sort of Obama-heavy guest list they’d like to be on, and it is exactly the sort of glitzy foundation, honouring worthy people, which they’re struggling to establish for themselves, possibly because the fascination with their navels remains strong.
We don’t yet know the pain they’re feeling about the continued uncertainty over Archie and Lilibet’s titles, but we can be sure they’ll keep it to themselves. Harry spent his entire life cursing his royal title, so it must be excruciating for him that his children may never get to experience the full horror of being an HRH.
Anyone who thinks, “Hmmm, didn’t he once speak about severing the cycle of genetic pain suffered by royal children?” must have misremembered, as Meghan once told a High Court judge. I will leave you with Meghan’s closing remarks, as rendered by the transcript of the podcast, which it warns is automatically generated and may not be accurate. Judge for yourself. I’m just an elf.

Favourite spelling checker software?
Like I'm willing to pay as I also write technical reports and blog posts (for my job), but I don't want to open a mortgage, 20-30€ per month is insanity.
I'm not a professional writer or editor or anything like that - I'm just someone with a couple of hobbies and to me that price is just too high. Even Pro writing aid's yearly is just too much for my use.
Not to mention that I don't want to paid to feed my writing to ChatGPT, if I wanted I could do that on my own for free.

By: Alex Thomas, Hartford Wolf Pack HARTFORD, CT—The Hartford Wolf Pack scored three of a possible four points over the weekend, extending their current point streak to five games (3-0-1-1). Thanks to their three points over the weekend, the Wolf Pack is tied with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for third place in the Atlantic Division. The Pack spent Monday morning traveling to Charlotte, North Carolina, where they will meet the Checkers on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Friday, March 8th, 2024, Vs. Providence Bruins (7-4 W): The Wolf Pack tied their season high for both goals (seven) and powerplay goals (four) in a single game on Friday night. The Pack roared out to a 6-0 lead, blowing away the Bruins to take a 5-4 edge in the ten-game season series. Brett Berard scored the first hat trick of his professional career, scoring three times on the powerplay. He struck at 7:26 and 14:20 of the first period and made it 5-0 2:35 into the middle frame. Berard's three powerplay goals tie a franchise record for powerplay goals in a single game. Andrew Hutchinson was the last to do in on February 8th, 2008, against the Bruins. The Church of St. Dominic is dying. Enter: Father O’Malley (Bing Crosby), who has been sent by Catholic Church leadership to revive an unenthusiastic congregation meeting in a building they can’t pay for. Father Fitzgibbon (Barry Fitzgerald) has been leading St. Dominic's for 45 years, and change doesn’t come easily. As they fight to relieve the church’s mortgage and support the struggling members of their parish, though, Father Fitzgibbon begins to see maybe he does need help after all, and maybe he needs it from someone less orthodox like Father O’Malley.

CROWD // Going My Way straivags its way through an episodic story. Fitzgibbon fights a cold and negotiates with creditors. O’Malley supports a runaway teen who dreams of being a singer, bumps into an old flame, and plays baseball with the boys in the neighborhood (with a shout-out to my shuttered hometown team the St. Louis Browns!) The duo plays checkers and golf, and we watch a full song performed from the opera Carmen. The adagio pace is a feature, not a bug, though perhaps it’s why, in a rare move, I needed to watch this Best Picture winner a second time because I couldn’t remember what happened not long after my first watch. 
That said, the tone is also why this is a rare feel-good Best Picture winner. If Bing Crosby is in your movie, almost by default one of your themes becomes the power of music. Music gives hope to all of the parishioners of St. Dominic’s, and it literally solves life’s big problems for several of them. While the plot may not move with the efficiency and humor of White Christmas, it’s hard to complain about any story that gives Crosby the chance to sing.
POPCORN POTENTIAL: 7.5/10

CRITIC // The Best Picture winner this film reminded me of most? 2022’s CODA, another feel-good narrative about the power of music. The biggest reason I kept comparing them in my mind, though, is the eras they were released. CODA was a heartwarming story released as we were exiting a pandemic, and Going My Way won Hollywood’s highest honor just two months before V-E Day. Sometimes when the world around you feels almost too much to bear, you need an escape. The same could be said for last year’s winner Everything Everywhere All at Once or this year’s Best Picture nominee The Holdovers. (We’ll see how world events play out in 2024 and if this trend continues, but it’s unlikely we’ll see another feel-good nom about Catholic priests given the baggage we have now, as outlined in 2015’s winner Spotlight.)
It may have less of a legacy today than competitors Double Indemnity and Gaslight, but at the time, Going My Way was a big winner. In addition to the top prize, it brought home trophies for Best Actor (Crosby, which Christian Blauvelt’s book Hollywood Victory noted was new range for this superstar), Supporting Actor (Fitzgerald, the only person to be nominated in both lead and supporting categories before rules prevented it from happening again—talk about category fraud!), Director, Original Story, Screenplay, and Original Song. Today’s audiences may not find it innovative, but it hits all its marks, and its arcs are universal, such as an older generation dealing with its obsolescence or the rich holding those meant to help a community hostage with their finances. (The Bishop’s Wife and It’s a Wonderful Life would go on to explore this idea with more depth.) Though there is a surprising lack of spiritual experience with God given the setting, it is also refreshing in our moment to watch the clergy devote their lives to bettering their neighborhood. 
ARTISTIC TASTE: 8.5/10

Red Flags
Buyer beware: these are problematic, headache-inducing issues that will probably eventually lead to plunking down extra dollars, so proceed with caution.
“As-Is” and “As-Is, Where-Is” properties
Buying a house “as-is” means you agree that no repairs or improvements will be made by the seller before the sale. When the term “where-is” is added, this indicates that the location may be problematic. These properties are often appealing because they are usually priced below market value, but make sure you understand why the seller is listing their home this way. Are they simply not interested in fixing it up? Is the home in a flood zone? Are there elevated radon levels in the area? Make sure your real estate agent helps uncover exactly what the issues are.
Poor roof condition
A new roof is never cheap. Signs of a roof going bad include algae growth; buckling and curling; missing, torn, or flapping shingles; water damage in attic or around chimney.
HVAC problems
Signs of a failing HVAC system can include indoor humidity, strange smells and noises, and inconsistent temperatures throughout the house.
A house that lingers on the market for a looooong time
Ask your agent what the average time is for a property to be on the market if you think the house you’re interested in has surpassed that length of time. Properties may become “stale” for a number of reasons including bad condition, an uncompromising seller, bad staging, or too high a price.
A house priced far below market value
If the price seems too good to be true, it might be too good to be true. Your real estate agent can help you determine the true reason before you sign the dotted line.
White Flags
These problems won’t just induce headaches; they may cause major life disruptions and may even break the bank. If the house you’re considering has these issues, consider a surrender — you might want to accept defeat and walk away.

Petan tied the shootout in the top half of the third round, snapping a shot by Skarek's glove. Iskhakov's brilliant move in the bottom half of the third round would prove to be the difference, however, as the Isles prevailed 2-1 in the shootout and 3-2 in the game. The loss snapped the Wolf Pack's six-game overall winning streak against the Islanders and seven-game winning streak at Total Mortgage Arena. The Wolf Pack continue their three-game road trip Tuesday night when they visit the Charlotte Checkers.
