“Mother knows best.“
Just saying, I could have treated her better, MEARL.

Whilst not brilliant for learning a new TTRPG system, podcasts do give you a good feel for it and whether you'd like it and how crunchy it is.

Given its emphasis on stories, and its continued focus on the people who tell stories I’m really itching to see Neverafter get increasingly meta. Like KOIIOK levels of meta.
I don’t think Brennan-as-GM, is also a character in the same way that the Driver is in Kollok 1991: this all-too-aware narrator that is endeavoring to guide the story to its natural conclusion.  Metatextually, the Driver knows that this is a game...kinda. I just think it’d be cool if Brennan pulled something like that.
Tumblr media
We already have characters like Scheherazade. Mother Goose. Aesop. Even the staffpeople within the Lines Between. People who are able to hold stories in a very real and tangible way. Brennan is essentially the same. But it’s in conjunction with the players that we have a table of co-authors.
When you drop shit like the omnipotent “Authors” being these eldritch beings beyond the ken of even the liminal beings of the Lines Between you open up the possibility of some serious Death of the Author. It begs the question of how they might try and spin that on the table.
Tumblr media
So much of Neverafter is in conversation with this existential question of free will versus determinism. Predestination and self-determination. It makes me think: what happens when they inevitably cross with the higher ordered powers of their universe?
I’d love to see Ally in the GM chair. Hell, I’d love to see any of them in the GM chair just to bring it another meta-layer level deeper. Neverafter is a story about stories. Its Book has got to be in there somewhere.

Given that you actually know shit about media management and you spend time on spend on twitch, I'm curious if you have thoughts on CR being at the top of the payout list despite being so different than the rest of the list? They're a company with a marketing staff, they only stream once or twice a week, ect. It's surprising to me that they seem to have found such a highly successful niche without imitators.
I don't think it's so complicated other than the fact that Critical Role has content that has actual incentive to pay a sub to access the VODs. The vast majority of Twitch content is people play games and chat while doing it, the VODs for which do often go behind the subscriber only paywall—but there is often very little in that content to actually warrant wanting to pay money to access at a later date. Subscribers to a channel are often paying for benefits like Discord server access, emotes, chat privileges.
Critical Role also has multiple ads running during the pre-episode and break reminding people to subscribe, most especially using their Amazon Prime subscription. A lot of streamers make a concerted effort for the same thing, but Critical Role in my experience due to their pre-recorded ad does a lot more consistent job of it and, again, the incentive is better. I don't think this is entirely the reason why, but I do think it's part of the reason they convert to subs and such better than so many streamers with higher follower counts.
I won't go into a whole breakdown of what contributed to its success in 2015, but that early success contributes to success now as well.
On the "without imitators" sentiment, there is a large number of actual play shows on Twitch that do actually attempt to imitate specifically Critical Role. There's a very vibrant actual play scene on Twitch. None of these are imitators because they're doing their own thing and approach, but of that scene, there's Rivals of Waterdeep, Into the Mother Lands, Kollok 1991 on Hyper RPG among their other shows, Mana Pot Studios, Dice Ex Machina (@CriticalBard is on their second season!) and other Saving Throw Show series. I've played in several Twitch-streamed one-shots and miniseries myself.
As to why other are nowhere near the top or make as much, I'm going to let Zac Eubank, former showrunner for Geek & Sundry including of Critical Role and current COO of Hyper RPG, explain that one: "As the person who decided to put that show on the air, I can tell you it is 100% lightning in a bottle. I have spent years telling clients that sadly they will not be the next CR, there won't be another. That's fine. Let's work together to find ways to succeed without lightning. Lots of factors in that first year, many of which I am under NDA on and unable to share, lead to its rise. I am glad they are at the top, but I want to see more story tellers in the top 1000 of that list. Let's get us there."

Thoughts on Kollok 1991 Ep. 8
So this weeks episode had some crazy shit happened...and I love it. I’mma run through some thoughts:
1. Okay...I feel called out when you get a bunch of idiots in a group during crazy stuff happening.
2. Billy! Don’t wave your hand in front of someone’s face, that’s rude as-wait...this is Billy Baker, this is what he does.
3. Hello wheelchair bound person who should be in her thirties...
4. Hey! Don’t kinkshame Alice!
5. Crap...cannibals...why’d it have to be cannibals?
6. Laura! My boo! Why would you do that?! It was just gettin’ to the good part!
7. Well shit, hello southern scientist lady whom is also Christian...I see this ending well.
8. “Mallory, I am your mother...” “That’s not true! That’s impossi-wait, no that tracks...goddamn this town.”
9. Em! Protect your mother’s patient that I probably shouldn’t ship you with!
10. Lying to your parents...this tracks.
11. Okay...so she never stopped cloning...we need to run!
12. Don’t stop running!
13. Holy shit! Tibby fell down a...unless it’s a well I don’t think Lassie cares.
14. Tibby! No! Someone help our collective son!

miiasmoak replied to your post: I finally know what’s up with Kollok… and like man...
i moved to a small town once for like 4 years and I can confirm this is exactly how it is
I too lived in a small town until I was 9... and i still kinda find it creepy. Like my mother knew where were were always because random neighbors would be watching out their windows and would call her? Like i would never look out my window now and good ‘huh that medium age child is headed to the playground, I should call his mother.’
