Climbing the Mount Meru was definitely the hardest physical challenge that I have ever accomplished. I am not too much of a hiker. I love to walk but the mountain scenery has never been my thing. I consider myself as a sport person, for sure. But this, I had never done it. Naively, I thought that climbing the Mount Meru would be kind like a big walk but a bit harder and longer. Joke was on me😝
Mount Meru is called the "little brother of Kilimanjaro", it is 4566 meters of altitude which makes it the 5th highest mountain in all Africa continent (or only 300 meters less than the Mont Blanc). Throughout the climb you can enjoy spectacular views of the Kilimanjaro, just a few kilometers away. Why choose the Mount Meru? Hikers choose to climb the Meru mountain to acclimate slowly in order to better tackle Kilimanjaro a few days later. Or in my case, if you are not into long hikes (from 5 to 10 days straight for Kilimanjaro), Meru's challenge is perfect for you. To organise this trip, you have to book it via an agency. It is impossible to do it by yourself. You will be joined by a whole crew with a minimum of 4 persons: a ranger, a guide, a cook and a porter. For us, we had 2 more people: a waiter and a camp manager. We did not choose the amount of the people joining our team, and I would advise to negotiate with your agency this number. Because you will have to tip all of them at the end of the trip💸💰Two options are available according to your level: 4 days/3 nights or 3 days/2 nights. We did the second one.
How much does it cost? Between 640$ to 750$ depending on the option you choose: 3 or 4 days. Always negotiate!
What about the tips? It is expected and the crew will even request it orally. This was an aspect we did not like as we felt pressured. For us, we (2 people) decided to give 100$ total to the whole crew and asked the guide to divide himself the cuts for each.
What is the schedule?
- Day 1: pickup at the hotel on morning time, few hours of drive to reach the park and the gate, departure early afternoon escorted with a ranger for about 10 km within the forest, arrival at first camp base in early evening, rest and dinner
- Day 2: departure at 8 am for about 7 km (all climbing), 4 to 5 hours. Arrival at the second camp base around 1 pm and lunch. Then ascent of the Little Meru which is at 3800 meters of altitude in order to test your body's reaction to altitude. Then rest, early dinner and bed before 7 pm.
- Day 3: wake up at midnight, departure at 1 am, ascent until sunrise at 6.15 am, then descent to second base camp, arrival and breakfast around 10 am, then descent to first camp base which takes approximately 3 hours, arrival around 1 pm, lunch and descent to the gate for about 3 additional hours. ➡️ If you decide to go with the 4 days/3 nights option, then you spend the last night at first base camp. And descent slowly to the gate the next day.
To tell you the truth, when we reached first camp base, we were at the very maximum of our physical capabilities. It was impossible for us to descent more and do the final 3 hours left. We actually were escorted by car by the ranger to finish safely 🙏🧘 So, if you are like us, favor the 4 days/3 nights' option.
What I would have liked to know before? An ascent is not like a big walk, you have to physically prepared for it and also get well equipped: walking sticks, thermo bottom body, raincoat and pants, heavy socks, etc.
In conclusion, this was an amazing experience. I am glad I did it so naively because if I had knew before, I am not sure I would have signed in. The landscapes were extraordinary, the atmosphere between hikers super boosting, and the challenge of surpassing yourself really invigorating💪😊

Is the largest movement of Vast numbers of #wildebeest #zebra and #gazelle whereby they migrate in a clockwise direction across the ecosystems of Serengeti and Maasai Mara.
WHY DO THEY MIGRATE?
They migrate across the Serengeti in searching of food and water.
WHAT MONTH IS THE GREAT MIGRATION?
The best month of seeing the #greatwildebeestmigration is from July- October when the wildebeest are always crossing the #marariver in #tanzania between #kogatende and the land between the Mara River and the border to Kenya.
